time high The number of Scots in employment has reached its highest level since 1992, according to statistics. By
Figures have revealed that the number of people in employment has increased from April to June 2014 by 63,000 to reach 2,594,000, the Office for National Statistics have revealed. This makes it the highest level since records began. The figures also show that there are more people in Scotland in employment than in the UK as a whole; 73.5% per cent of

people are now in employment in Scotland, compared to 73% per cent in the UK. The unemployment rate is 6.4% per cent, which is the same as the UK. The number of unemployed people has fell by 21,000 with the number of people claiming Jobseekers Allowance falling by 35,500 over the year.

Cabinet Secretary for Training, Youth and Women’s Employment Angela Constance said: “I am pleased to see that youth employment has increased and that fewer young people are now unemployed in Scotland compared to

It is so important that our young people have the chance to get a foothold in the labour market and we want to see this figure continue to decrease. “This government will always do everything we can to ensure women have the same opportunities in the labour market as their male counterparts, and have access to quality sustained work in careers they choose. “As part of our recovery we must ensure that everyone is able to benefit from a growing economy. For example, our transformational plans for childcare will not just be good for children, but also their parents, giving them greater opportunities to enter work or training.”

Local MP concerned at armed police deployment Katy Clark MP has voiced concern that armed police officers are being deployed on routine patrols across Scotland.
The Member of Parliament for North Ayrshire and Arran expressed these concerns after Police Scotland confirmed that some police officers are now routinely patrolling the streets carrying firearms. Police Scotland stated that there are 275 armed police officers in Scotland and that these armed officers are being regularly deployed to support unarmed officers in their routine duties. Police patrols have not traditionally been armed in the UK. Speaking on the subject Katy Clark said: “I am concerned that armed police patrols are now taking place on a regular basis and by the lack of transparency about how and why this decision was made. Whilst I understand that the police require armed officers to respond to particularly dangerous situations, the routine arming of officers on patrol could fundamentally alter the
nature of policing in Scotland. Even though the number of police officers carrying weapons is currently low, I am worried that routine armed patrols could change the relationship between the police and the communities they work in.” I am also very concerned that such an important decision has been made without the Scottish Parliament or the general public being properly consulted and far from clear what the justification is for it. I am particularly disappointed that the Scottish Government refused to hold a full Parliamentary Debate on this subject.
If the Cabinet Secretary for Justice believes the decision to allow armed police officers to patrol the streets was correct, then he should answer questions on the matter instead of trying to shut down debate. The public have genuine concerns about this decision and I am frustrated that the Scottish Government has failed to address them.”

With their cheery ‘high fives’ and ‘happy-to-help’ attitude, the 15,000 Clyde-siders who volunteered at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow played a massive role in the event’s success. And now the Games are over, Barnardo’s Scotland hopes some of the 50,000 or so people who applied for volunteer duty at the Games might want to direct some of their goodwill towards helping out in the charity’s shops throughout the Glasgow region. Magdalene Davie, Area Business Manager, said: “We had difficulties recruiting new volunteers while the Commonwealth Games were on as most people who had some spare time were taking the opportunity to be part of this amazing event. “It would be wonderful if some of those who did volunteer at the games would consider coming and volunteering for us. Volunteering in our stores can be a
lot of fun; it gives people the chance to share their experience with us, learn new skills as well as meet and mix with people of different ages and backgrounds and be part of their own community. Dino’s fish and chip shop has bee named on the list of finalists for regional Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year. In is one of six Scottish shop that will compete to named named regional winner, allowing them to compete for the British title in London next January. The other chippys that have made the cut are: Cromars. St. Andrews, Fife; Frankie’s Fish & Chips, Brae, Shetland; The Trawler, Golspie, Sutherland; Palombos, Alexandria, Dumbartonshire and Moore’s Fish & Chips, Castle Douglas, Dumfries & Galloway. Each shop has been subject to assessment by industry experts and have been visited by a mystery diner to qualify as one of the top 60 shops in the United Kingdom.
The criteria upon which they have been judged includes product quality, sustainable sourcing, marketing and customer service. The event is organised by Seafish, the sea food authority, who seek to recognise those achieving the highest standards possible in the fish and chip shop industry each year. Paul Williams, Chief Executive of Seafish said: “These awards have not only improved the industry standards by consistently rewarding and testing businesses, they have also raised positive awareness of the issues surrounding sustainable fishing practices and encouraged shops to implement sustainable sourcing. “Last year we witnessed some of the highest calibre of entrants ever. Countdown to smoke-free grounds NHS Ayrshire & Arran officially launched its countdown to smoke-free grounds this week (Tuesday 5 August 2014). In seven months time, when the new Smoke-free Grounds Policy comes in to effect, smoking shelters will be removed and smoking will not be permitted anywhere inside the buildings or in the grounds of all NHS Ayrshire & Arran. This follows a directive from the Scottish Government asking all NHS Boards to ensure their grounds are smoke free by March 2015. Dr Carol Davidson, Director of Public Health, explains: “Smoking is the biggest single preventable cause of ill-health and early death in Scotland. It’s not only smokers who are at risk - passive smoking kills, causes disease and leads to health problems. The Scottish Government recognises the important example that the NHS should give in this matter and has asked all NHS Boards to lead the way in providing a clean, healthy and smoke-free environment to all patients, staff and visitors. Appreciating how important this issue
is, Ayrshire and Arran NHS Board endorsed the Smoke-free Grounds Policy which was presented at its June Board meeting.”
The Smoke-free Grounds Policy was developed after an extensive period of engagement during November and December last year. Staff and members of the public were asked to complete a survey to gather their views on smoking and the best ways to achieve smoke-free grounds and their responses were taken into account when finalising the policy. Dr Davidson adds: “The vast majority of people, including our staff, are supportive of the move to smoke-free grounds. However, we do appreciate that the change in policy has the potential to cause difficulty for some smokers. All the fun of the play – at Kay Park Playday at Kay Park Kilmarnock has been a favourite feature in the East Ayrshire summer calendar for many years and this year’s event, with its topical Commonwealth theme, was no exception as it attracted thousands of visitors from near and far.
Over 7000 people turned up to join in the fun at Kay Park on Wednesday, and among the visitors was Aileen Campbell MSP, Minister for Children and Young People. Playday is a national event which celebrates the child’s right to play and throughout the country parks come alive with play activities and Kilmarnock’s Playday event is one of the very biggest, and arguably the best in the country. Last year the Kilmarnock event won a Best Have a Field Day award from the Field Trust. Organised by the Council’s Vibrant Communities Play and Early Intervention Team, in partnership with the East Ayrshire Community Play Forum, the day’s activities
were arranged in six different zones throughout the park. In the Creative Zone, artistic kids enjoyed arts and crafts and face painting. The Fun Zone was hugely popular with bouncy castles, quad bikes, rodeo bull, giant games and early year’s activities. Mud slides and water activities were the order of day in the Messy Zone, while in the Free Play Zone, youngsters explored the joys of den building, wigwam making and tyre crates. Canoeing, climbing and crate climbing were key attractions in the Adventure Zone. And this year, to celebrate the recent XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, there was a special Commonwealth Zone with taster sessions running throughout the day in sports like rugby, judo and gymnastics, cycling, hockey and “It’s a knockout”. The event was supported by many local voluntary and community organisations and a large number of local sports clubs who all offered their services for free. Cumnock Highland Games: You’d be Barking Mad to Miss It! Canine wizardry, caber tossing athletes, kilted sword-dancers and marching pipe bands are just some of the attractions at this month’s Cumnock Highland Games and Tattoo.
The Ayrshire town’s annual festival of all things Scottish has grown to become one of the biggest events of its kind in the area, and this year’s 9th Cumnock Highland Games promises to be one of the best yet.
It all kicks off on the evening of Saturday 23rd August with live music, a dog display team and explosive demonstrations at Cumnock Tattoo. It’s been three years since this open air event was last held, and with a line-up including pipe bands, tribal band Clann an Drumma, the Queens Own Yeomanry and the amazing Cheshire Dog Display Team, the 2014 Tattoo is sure to be a memorable evening. The following day – Sunday 24th August – the action really gets going with the Highland Games kicking off at around 1pm. Seven pipe bands – including 2013 champions Coalburn IOR – will parade through the town to Broomfield Park, where 2014 Games Chieftain Rev John Paterson will declare the Games officially open. This will signal the commencement of the Highland Heavies competitions, a series of traditional events in which both men and women test their strength and skill. An international line-up of athletes has been confirmed, with reigning men’s champion Jason Young set to defend his title against challengers from across Scotland, Germany and New Zealand. Whilst the strongmen and women battle it out, a competition just as fierce will take place on the main stage. Highland Dancers from all over the
country and overseas will descend on Cumnock, demonstrating the outstanding athleticism, precision and aesthetics of their discipline as they compete for a whole host of titles. The afternoon will also see a Tug of War contest, plus the seven Pipe Bands will be performing throughout the day. There will be more live music in the beer tent, and with an array of stalls plus with a kids fun fair, there will be something for everyone. Animal lovers will be in for a special treat, with the line-up also including the Cheshire Dog Display Team, who last performed at Cumnock Highland Games in 2009. This entertaining and informative display team comprises of a wide variety of dogs of all shapes and sizes and from a range of backgrounds including rescue dogs, pet dogs and doggie stars from the world of TV and photographic modelling. Starring the cream of canine talent, the
display is performed to music with an amusing and informative commentary, with the team specialising in canine wizardry at its very best. Search for a smile
celebrates
success! NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s Oral Health Promotion Team has developed an educational resource called ‘Search for a smile’. The tool supports and helps primary school children learn about the importance of good oral health.
Every primary school in Ayrshire received a copy of Search for a smile in 2012. Earlier this year, we asked schools to complete a survey to tell us how successful the resource had been and if we needed to make any improvements. As part of the feedback, we awarded prizes to the schools in East, North and South Ayrshire that had been the most creative when using the Search for a smile resources.
Every school that completed the survey also received a certificate. The winning school in East Ayrshire was Patna Primary School and Nursery. In North Ayrshire, Loudoun Montgomery Primary in Irvine were the winners. And in South Ayrshire, it was Dalmilling Primary in Ayr who received the winner’s plaque. Karen Parker, Assistant Dental Services Manager - Oral Health Promotion commented: “We wanted to encourage children to learn about good oral health in a fun and interactive way and the Search for a smile resource allows us to do just that. We would like to say a big thank you to all the primary schools for taking part and engaging with us so enthusiastically.”

The show also explores war on the Home Front – through the diaries of celebrity cook and restaurateur Hallie Miles, and suffragette Kate Parry Frye. Perhaps most memorable of all is the extraordinary bravery of soldier Reg Evans. Aged 25, he enlisted in the Territorial Army in 1913; served with the Hertfordshire Regiment
in France from 1914, and was seriously wounded in 1916, when a gunshot wound cost him most of his jaw. In this dramatised episode, he undergoes pioneering plastic surgery. One woman who has been integral to the series is Pamela Armitage Campbell, the author of new e-book Reg Evans DCM – A Hero's War in His Own Words. She also happens to be his daughter. I spoke to her the other night and she said, ‘Oh I don’t think I’ll watch it (The Great War:The People's Story, Sunday, ITV, 9pm), because the young man doesn’t look anything like Reg.” Pamela explained it would be impossible for her to tell the show’s producers who did look like him, and who did sound like him because she was a young girl when he died and could not remember his voice.
“She (Pamela’s cousin) said, ‘Oh it was a much more refined London accent than Daniel (Mays), who’s portraying him’. “I said, ‘Well that’s as maybe when he was at home, but you have no idea really… he would probably just have taken on the accent of the men he was with. “In those days you were either posh or you were a worker; the class system was such, and if your accent gave you away that you were a toff then he wouldn’t have had the confidence of the men he was with and trying to get the best from.” Having transcribed Reg’s assorted notes and letters, it gave Pamela a better understanding of her dad, and mother.

Biologist Patrick Aryee and physicist Helen Czerski explore the world of animal senses to reveal how they detect things beyond the limits of human perception, conducting experiments and demonstrations featuring a variety of species. They begin by investigating sight and reveal how caribou – wild reindeer of Alaska – use ultraviolet light to avoid their predators. They also discover how the dragonfly's ability to view things in slow motion allows it to make a kill, and show how a snake can see in the pitch dark without using its eyes.

Past Life Regression

Past Life Regression is frequently used for psychotherapeutic purposes, but more commonly, it is a means of satisfying curiosity about one’s previous lives, like a form of self-discovery. This in itself can be a spiritual experience and therapeutic in its own right.
Criticism of this technique is mainly based on the claim that the hypnotist puts leading questions to the subject, thereby creating false memories. However, many critics do not understand that the hypnotist is trained specifically to avoid leading questions, avoiding a session that would be little more than farcical.
Another hazard is what is known as cryptomnesia (literally hidden memory), and this has to be examined closely to filter out any false memories e.g. a novel you have just read or a movie you have recently watched, from the real past life memories.
The practice of Past Life Regression through hypnosis is completely safe and extremely relaxing. The individual under hypnosis is in full control at all times and is fully aware of all that is happening throughout. A single session usually lasts about an hour, sometimes longer, and there is always a great sense of relaxation afterwards.
Case Study;
I have conducted many past life regressions in recent years, and the case history below is a typical example (taken from my book A Knight to Remember). One lady, called Jean, in her mid-fifties, came to me with stories of recurring dreams, and was intrigued by the thought of having lived in the past. She was a PA to the Chairman of a very successful scientific corporation, and at the top of her profession. Not the gullible stereotype as any sceptic would imagine. Her success in discovering past lives I believe, is down to her open-minded approach, right from the start. To her later surprise, nothing of her recurring dreams was revealed in this first session. She requested that I take her to a life where she was with her “soul mate” and I duly complied. Following is the condensed transcript of this first session…
Me … now go through the door behind where you will find your soul –mate, describe the door. Jean - It is creamy coloured.
Me, as you open the door and pass through, look down and tell me what you are wearing on your feet.
Jean, Vert du Bois...we are near to St. Etienne. Me, what is your name? Jean, Marielle Ourdeau. Me, how old are you? Jean, I am thirty-one.
Jean, I am wearing satin slippers.
Me, who is the King?
Jean, They are pink.
Me, what year is it?
Jean, Silks, dress…taffeta…sleeves gathered at the elbows…puff sleeves.
Me, what is your husband’s name?
Me, What colour are they?
Jean, I don’t know.
Me, tell me what you are wearing?
Jean, It is the Year of Our Lord 1623.
Me, now, what is going on around you?
Jean, Fire! The building is on fire. I am now outside. I see the chateau on fire. Me, are there any fatalities?
Jean, No, my husband is away.
Me, what is the name of the chateau?
Jean, Pierre.
Me, you have a château… does your husband have a title? Jean, He has no title. He is a merchant with many ships. Me, what does Pierre trade in? Jean, He buys and sells silks.
Me, have you seen his ships?
Jean, Yes, they are big boats with huge sails. Me, where did you see these ships?
Jean, Marseilles. I have been to Marseilles, and I have also been to Lyon. Me, have you been to Paris?
Jean, No, and I don’t want to go there. I have heard it is too dirty.
Me, now, move forward to when you are forty years old. What year is it now? Jean, It is the Year of Our Lord 1632. Me, where are you now?
Jean, I am living in Paris.
Me, why are you not living in Paris? Jean, Pierre is no longer a merchant.
Me, how does he make a living?
Jean, He works with the government. Me, do you have children?
Jean, Lorraine is twelve…Suzanne is ten… and Thomas is five. Me, do you look after the children?
Jean, We have a governess and a housekeeper, living in. We also have a cook who comes in. I like to cook, but my husband does not like me to cook. Please don’t tell my husband that I cook.
Me, now move forward to when you are fifty years old. (No response.) Go now to the day when you died. How old are you? Jean, Forty-six.
Me, where are you? Jean, I am in bed.
Me, what is your illness?
Jean, It is called many things… The Black Death. Me, is Pierre your soul mate?
Jean, No, he is not my soul-mate.
Me, now go to a time in this life when you are with your soul –mate. Where are you? Jean, I am in a chateau with Jacques. Me, how old are you? Jean, I am sixteen.
Me, how old is Jacques?
Jean, He is thirty-five… we love each other. Me, go to the day when Jacques died. How old are you now? MARIELLE? Jean, I am eighteen. (Session ends).
Historical Context.
Chateau Vert du Bois still exists as a hotel in the St. Etienne area, although the name is very common among chateaux. St. Etienne was noted for being the centre for the silk trade in the 1600s. In Lyon in 1632, 60,000 people died of plague. Perhaps Marielle moved north to Paris, a city she detested, to escape the plague, but ultimately succumbed to it when it too reached Paris six years later. Was the plague also the reason for Pierre ceasing to be a merchant, and to work for the government in Paris instead? Marielle’s time with Jacques was short…he died in 1610. If her oldest child Lorraine was born in 1620, Marielle perhaps married Pierre around 1619 when she would have been twenty- seven. This past life regression with Jean was a surprise to her, and it did throw up some interesting detail about a life as a wife of a rich silk trader in France in the seventeenth century. From a very young age I have been “psychic” and I’ve worked professionally with the world of spirit for over 30 years now. During that time people often ask me things like, what is it like? How do you do it? How you do you get the messages? And many other questions like this so, let me try and give you an understanding of how it all works for me. When I am “going to work” as I term it, I have a kind of ritual so to speak. Like anyone, preparing themselves to engage in their work we all have something that gets us into the zone and for me that starts with spend my day with nerves in my stomach which I have come to realise is, the way I build energy to connect with spirit especially, if I am preparing for a show. As they day moves on I do some gentle meditation and this is when I get my first connection with spirit, now, I have to say that most mediums won’t get their connection until they actually stand up to do their demonstration but, that would never work for me personally. When I tune into spirit energy it can come in the form of a vision of the person who has passed over which I will either see in my minds eye [the same as when you daydream] or I will visibly see them. If I see them it can be as a shadowy form or as transparent – normally I can see what they are wearing and how they would have dressed – this happens so that I can pass this information onto their loved ones as their appearance is obviously relevant. Then comes their characteristics – as a medium you need to get the measure of the soul, how would they have been e.g. funny, dry wit, serious, caring or deep and these
are all pieces of information for the person to let them know that this is really their loved one. To me its all about the element of proof, if you can’t tell someone facts and things that they know to be true about the soul who has passed over then there is no point in telling them anything about what’s ahead because there are no foundations to build on. Next might comes some information that is personal to the person and once again this is to assure them it is real – I love when spirit come in and give me a cracking piece of information that blows the persons socks off because it was so relevant and no one else could have known it. Examples of this would be; I was giving a woman a reading in connection with her loved one in spirit and told her that she had recently done something special for them, it was not a head stone they had put down but a plaque she had made for her loved one which was true. Another woman came for a reading and I told her about the Glass eye that her father was telling me about, it would sit on the mantelpiece again, true. One of the ones I will never forget was when giving a demonstration at a spiritualist church, I spoke to a man there and was telling him the following “ a gentleman in spirit shows me you were at a funeral this week, he says I thought when you passed over that nothing much else could go wrong – this man obviously has a good sense of humour as he comes forward – he is telling me that the ground was so wet the people carrying the coffin slipped, the coffin dropped and the lid came lose” the man said “that’s exactly what had happened” Now, you can imagine this would have been anything but funny
But you may know them more in the shape of a crystal ball, which psychics, gypsies and spiritual folk have used since the Middle Ages.
however; the man in spirit was just of the nature that to him, this was funny and to me a wonderful piece of evidence from the spirit world. Spirit love to give proof positive that they are with you that there is something beyond this earthly plane and that to me is important. Its not just the visuals I get though, I hear spirit, not the way we would have a conversation but its like the wee inner voice – I sense them also, which means I know what they were like and I pick up on their illness before passing. The latter for me can be difficult as I get the feelings and conditions from spirit so that I can pass them on for the person but, as soon as I’ve passed them on, I give the feelings back to the spirit world as they don’t belong with me. My connections with the spirit world have been nothing short of amazing – they give proof and I am always in awe of what can happen during the connection, no matter how long I’ve been doing this work I always feel the same - the day I don’t have that feeling is the day I will give it up. Spirit are never wrong however, I often say its like being an interpreter as I have to make sense of the information I get in order to pass it on and there are times I get it a bit mixed up, it does work itself out in the end but, I trust them one hundred percent. This is a snapshot of how spirit connection works for me. Once the door is opened they are there to bring forward the information and to let loved ones on the earth plane know they are happy and at peace - this is what brings comfort.
Tarot Card of the Week The tarot is an ancient and powerful divination tool that has been used for centuries, its hard to pin point exactly where it originated but what we do know is that the rich and famous have consulted it to assist them in their life. The fool is both the start and the end of the major arcane and is numbered zero –this is the souls journey on the earth plane and can donate the send of something and the start of something new. When you see this card in its upright position it tells of new adventures and opportunities and an element of risk that goes with them. Its all about a leap of faith and trusting that what you are about to do will pay off, almost like the Indiana Jones film where e was to take a step onto a path but there was none there and he had to trust that it would all be fine – which it was. When the fool appears reversed then it can mean that you are being a little foolish maybe rushing into something without due care and attention so be cautious. The gel is to be applied to clean skin, so after cleansing, I applied the gel to my face making sure not to go near eyes or lips. The gel is thick and sticky, so it clings to the skin without sliding off. The instructions state to leave it on for between 3-10 minutes, depending on what you find bearable. I left it on for the full ten minutes. You can feel it stinging slightly, but not to the point that it’s uncomfortable. After the ten minutes were up, I washed it off. My skin felt clean and polished, and my nose and chin area felt tighter.

I have a confession to make. I hate flossing my teeth. I hate the feel of it, the sound of it and my biggest fear is it getting stuck between my teeth. Ridiculous, I know. So when I first heard about the Philips Sonicare Airfloss, I was intrigued. The Airfloss is a tooth-cleaning device that claims to “cleans between your teeth where brushing cannot”. So does it do what it says on the tin? I put it to the test. It works by filling it with water or mouthwash and placing it between your teeth at the gum, then pressing the button where the liquid shoots out. It looks a bit like a standard electrical toothbrush, except for the thin spout at the top. It comes with a charger, and it includes a quick start guide as well as a more intensive set of instructions. The battery life is great also, as one session of charging should last 14 uses (two weeks when used daily). One thing I should mention is that it is a European plug, so you’ll need an adapter. You can pick these up fairly cheap at Pound Shops. After charging it for 24 hours I was good to go. The water shoots out m u c h s t ro n g e r than I was
expecting, it’s not at all painful though. It may take a few tries to get used to it, the first time I was spraying water and dribbling everywhere – not a hot look. However, once you get the hang of it it’s really simple to use. They key is to close your lips to hold it in place, not like the models on the box who have a wide grin as they use it. The button can also be pressed down to release steady bursts which makes it easier.
So, does it actually work? It is hard to tell, as it is designed to remove plaque, which is invisible. However, after a few weeks using it, my teeth look slightly pointier at the gum line which means the gums are less inflamed. I have still been using dental floss occasionally, but in conjunction with the AirFloss, I am using less. Overall, I am really pleased with this product and as a floss-hater I can now floss my teeth with a smile on my face - with my lips closed!

Tentants behaving badly: AXA warns landlords they are not doing enough to protect themselves The nation’s landlords are leaving themselves exposed to the country’s worst tenants by failing to carry out basic checks, AXA has warned. With the rental market’s peak season about to start, AXA reveals just how many of the UK’s estimated 8.3 million tenants are behaving badly and how poorly protected landlords really are when the worst happens. Research carried out by AXA, one of the UK’s largest insurance companies, revealed that almost 60% of tenants admit to breaking the terms of their rental agreement, and a third had broken the law in relation to their rental. In particular: 26% of tenants pay their rent late, one in 10 tenants admit to having done a moonlight flit to avoid paying the landlord money, 18% have kept pets in the property without the landlord’s permission, 15% have received complaints from neighbours for excessive noise, 8% have sub-let to someone else without the landlord’s permission.
At the most serious end of the scale, eight per cent of tenants – equivalent to two thirds of a million tenants nationwide – admit to actually committing a crime on the landlord’s premises, and a similar figure (10%) say they’ve had the police called to the property. While these tenants remain in the minority, landlords do carry a legal responsibility to ensure that their premises are not used for criminal purposes. Under the Misuse of Drugs Act, landlords can face prosecution if a tenant is found to be producing cannabis or banned substances on their property. AXA warns that while the responsibilities on landlords to keep their houses in order are getting stricter, many are still failing to carry out any checks on their tenants or even visit their properties at all. The research found that 38% of landlords carry out no checks on prospective tenants, and only five per cent carry out a criminal record check. Meanwhile, a third of landlords never visit their property during a rental.
Major works are already well under way but potential buyers have been informed that it will take more than the £1.2m to have the property fully refurbished. Mr Warden explained “There’s been significant work carried out to Carbisdale, with more than £” million spent on the renovation so far, but there is still a way to go-your budget will need to be significantly higher than the £1.2 million guide price.”
Tenancy agreements are also an important part of the picture, giving the landlord a firm foundation to evict non-paying tenants or claim damages for financial loss caused by the tenant. AXA found that landlords are getting better on this front – this year’s study revealed that 75% of rentals are now based on a formal agreement, compared to just 52% at the beginning of 2013. “During the recession, we saw a significant increase in the number of accidental landlords – people who never expected to rent out their property, but couldn’t sell a former home or needed the additional income. With a booming rental market, they aren’t going anywhere”, said Darrell Sansom, Managing Director at AXA Business Insurance. “While legislation toughens, we need to make sure that enough is being done to inform and educate landlords too. Certainly, our experience is that many new landlords aren’t wilfully failing in their duties, they simply aren’t aware of all their obligations and commitments.”
Planning permission for student flats near Partick Cross passed
The go-ahead to build student flats has been given by planners after it was revealed that there is a considerable shortage for young people at university. Glasgow Harbour is planning to build 503 studio style flats on a site near Beith Street, Castlebank Street and Anderson Street. There will also be two shops in the 10 storey development. A recent study by Glasgow City Council found that there is a total of 50,880 full-time students and 14,195 part-time students attending Glasgow, Strathclyde and Caledonian universities, Glasgow School of Art and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. The five main higher education institutions in Glasgow offer accommodation for 6219 students often only to students starting in first year. This makes up only 10% of the
total student population in the city. The private sector offers accommodation for 4678 students, around 7% of the student population. Planning permission has recently been passed for 15 student accommodation developments and are under construction or yet to be started. These will provide a further 2714 student beds. A report from Richard Brown, the council’s executive director of development and regeneration, says: “When combined, these factors offer accommodation for 13,611 students which is 21% of all students, meaning 51,645 students are residing at home with parents, in HMO’s or other private rented accommodation.” By

Hyundai unveils new generation i20 With the launch of its latest model, Hyundai Motor is continuing its successful presence in Europe’s B-segment, highlighted by almost one million sales since 2002. The popularity of the original i20 has made it one of the company’s bestselling cars in the region. The key aims of the new model are to open Hyundai to an even wider audience; further develop perceptions of the brand; and confirm Hyundai’s position as a truly European automaker. The New Generation i20 has been designed and developed in Europe, and three key attributes in particular underline how it meets the needs of European consumers: class-leading interior space, a host of high-technology and comfort-enhancing features, and distinctive, refined design. Based on a new platform, New Generation i20 features a 2570 mm wheelbase – 45 mm longer than its predecessor – providing European customers with one of the most spacious cabins in the
segment. Efficient packaging has created a passenger compartment that can comfortably seat five adults. Combined front and rear legroom is best in class at 1892 mm. Boot capacity is also segment-leading: 326 litres when the rear seats are upright. Enhancing the comfort and the sense of space for driver and passengers is a unique-in-class panoramic sunroof. Able to both tilt and fully open, it fills the cabin with natural light and fresh air. grille has been lowered for design and engineering purposes. A thin, horizontal grille connects the front headlamp clusters, which include bi-function projection headlamps, LED daytime running lights and LED positioning lamps. A lower grille houses the front fog lamps, and emphasises the powerful stance of the car. The 4035 mm long bodyshell incorporates a single feature-line running the length of the vehicle, sculptured undercuts of the body panels, and a waistline moulding at the base of the door. At the rear, New Generation i20 features a gloss-finished black C-pillar that gives the impression of a floating roofline. The lamp clusters wrap around the rear wing into the boot lid and feature a ‘boomerang’shaped LED design. The public world premiere of the New Generation i20 will take place during Hyundai’s press conference at 2014 Paris Motor Show in Hall 3, at 16:00 CET on Thursday 2 October.
American racing driver killed during sprint race Tragedy struck at a sprint race track in New York as one of the competitors was struck by another car and died. Kevin Ward Jr, 20, had got out of his car to remonstrate with another driver, with whom he had collided on the previous lap. That driver was Tony Stewart – a three-time Nascar champion. Stewart is a well known athlete in the United states and placed at number 83 of Forbes list of highest paid athletes in 2013. Footage of the incident surfaced online, clearly showing Ward being struck by Stewart’s car a lap after
the two had collided – sending Ward spinning into the side of the track and out of the race. Ward is shown angrily gesturing towards the car as it returned round the track towards where he had climbed out of his own wrecked vehicle. The horrifying clip showed the back end of the car clipping Ward, sending him flying down the track. He was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital. The remainder of the race was cancelled within five minutes of the incident and Stewart withdrew from a scheduled race the next night. Stewart was not facing any criminal charges at the time of writing, having co-operated with police.
Supercars hit London
‘Tis ‘The Season’, the time of the year wealthy London districts, such as Kensington and Knightsbridge, play host to a fleet of luxury cars brought over from the likes of Dubai and Kuwait. The cars are largely owned by mega-rich Arabs looking to escape the searing heat of the Middle East by spending their summer holidays in London. It has become a regular fixture as the late summer months roll round, six and seven figure valued cars are shipped to Europe so the owners aren’t without their luxury playthings. First they will be sighted in Cannes before making their way to England’s capital to line the streets outside highend fashion stores as the owners pop in to continue their conspicuous show of wealth. The influx of the supercars also brings car enthusiasts – dubbed the ‘Carparazzi’ – who come to ogle, film and photograph their dream cars.
Ontario County Sheriff Philip said: “This is being investigated as on on-track crash and I don’t want to infer that there are criminal charges pending. “When the investigation is completed, we will sit down with the district attorney and review it. “But I want to make it very clear – there are no criminal charges pending at this time.” By

Often the owners will try and out-do each other with more outlandish and garish modifications to make their particular toy shinier than the rest. The winners this summer would probably be the gold wrapped Ferrari and Range Rover that could be seen dazzling people as the summer
sun bounced off their exteriors. Not everyone has been pleased with the sight of the cars – with some local residents complaining of the nuisance of ‘The Season’ as it has come to be known. Some have complained of the noise as the drivers rev the engines while racing round the usually sleepy streets of Knightsbridge. With such deep wallets, the owners don’t seem to mind parking fines either, as the cars can often be spotted parked on double yellow lines, amongst other violations. However, it may also be the case that their simply not worried about paying up, since it’s so difficult to track the owners down. Westminster council has said fines given to cars registered in the United Arab Emirates have jumped in recent years, with a total of £57,060 given out last year – nearly doubling the £31,780 total from 2011/12. A spokesman said: “We do all we can to ensure that all outstanding fine are paid – whatever the nationality of the driver. “However, when cars aren’t registered in this country, it is sometimes extremely difficult to track people down. “We already work with an agency to help recover money owed by European drivers and we’re currently exploring other avenues that might further our success. The start and end point here is that every driver who parks in Westminster is subject to the same laws.” By

It’s back to Premier League action at Ashfield this Sunday afternoon as the Glasgow Tigers look to get back on track having had their quarter final Knock Out Cup tie with Newcastle washed out last weekend. Having had no race action since over powering fourth placed Scunthorpe on 4th August, the Glasgow riders will have to shed any rustiness and instead pull out their very best form as they face the visit on Sunday of defending league champions, currently placed second in the league table, Somerset Rebels. The visitors travel North as part of a tour which takes them to Edinburgh (Friday) and Berwick (Saturday) before they arrive at Ashfield for tapes-up at 3pm this Sunday. The Rebels are led by former Tiger Nick
Morris who was brought to the UK by the Tigers in 2010 and helped Glasgow win the league in 2011. Morris has some talented back-up within the Somerset side and they will unquestionably push the Tigers very hard to determine the fate of Sunday’s league points. The Tigers will again track a full side – for only the third time since end April – which will allow the same side to face Somerset as had comfortably out gunned 4th placed Scunthorpe just over a week ago. The meeting will mark only the second home fixture for new Swede Victor Palovaara who will hope to improve greatly on his single point debut score, whilst Tigers will also look to talented French ace Dimitri Berge to re discover his pre injury scoring touch which made him an early season sensation for Glasgow.
Tigers will be buoyed by the ease of their recent win against Scunthorpe however will need to take that same attitude and discipline into Sunday’s meeting if they are to be able to come out on top against Somerset, a view shared by skipper Theo Pijper who himself scored the club’s first full maximum of the season in that recent win: “We have the riders to beat Somerset, we have developed a belief in ourselves and just need to keep that going now. It is our home track and we all know how to ride it, so must make sure that we avoid mistakes and perform with confidence in just the same way we did against Scunthorpe. Duffy blasts poor team performance
Greenock Morton boss Jim Duffy launched a strongly worded assault at his players after he considered their performance against Ayr United on Saturday as the worst since he took charge of the Ayrshire club.
Well experienced Duffy could not believe how quickly his team slumped to defeat after successfully seeing off Spartans and Berwick Rangers in their previous two games. To Jim Duffy’s dismay Morton were reduced to ten men late into the second half after Jordan Allan was dismissed for a dangerous challenge on Alan Forrest. Duffy said “First half we weren’t at the
races and Ayr United totally dominated it. We had a chance in the first five minutes, but other than that Ayr were in control of the game.” Morton had several chances during the match especially in the second half, but found themselves subdued for long spells of the game, Duffy was at a loss to explain why. He said “We looked a wee bit better at that point but still not anywhere near the level we would hope to be at.” Speaking about the red card and the resulting goal for the opposition that followed the Morton manager said “With the red card I genuinely don’t think he intended to go over the ball- but he did go over the ball. If you lunging in
like that in the modern day game then it’s a red card.”
“That allowed Ayr width and stretch the game. Ryan Donnelly is a penalty box striker and he took it really well. From our point of view he was in between two defenders and that was poor.” “I felt it was a poor performance in general and we didn’t deserve any more than what we got.”
On his players performance, Duffy was equally as critical “We had seven or eight players off form, and it was the poorest we’ve played, including all pre season and all cup games. “Credit has to go to Ayr United. They were strong organised and played well.”

Perennial “both teams to score” side, Everton, open the season away to Leicester. Expect them to drop their usual one goal, but with Lukaku signed up long term now, for a mere 28m, the Toffees should have too much fire power for Leicester. Take btts and Everton to win at huge odds of 13/2 Liverpool take on Southampton in their opening match, with Liverpool having bought the majority of the Southampton side from last year, expect some added tension to the game. The Saints did bolster their squad also though, with La Gran Murella being installed as their new No.1. I fancy a few goals in this one, take btts and Liverpool to win at 21/10

Ayrshire Derby in League Cup
Kilmarnock will host Ayr United in the second round of the Scottish League Cup later in the month. The draw was made at Murrayfield before the second leg of Celtic’s Champions League qualifier against Legia Warsaw. The derby, undoubtedly the tie of the round, was one of eleven fixtures drawn, with Celtic, Motherwell, St Johnstone and holders Aberdeen all entering at the next stage of the competition. The two sides last met in the semifinal of this very competition in 2012, when an extra time winner from Dean Shiels was the only goal of the game in a Kilmarnock victory at Hampden. Killie went on to win the final later that year, defeating Celtic 1-0 in the final.

Referees in new strike threat Scottish football’s referees are threatening strike action for the second time in four years after it was discovered that referees in the high intensity Scottish Championship are being paid far less than their fellow whistlers in the Scottish Premiership.
The situation arose after referees in the Championship were being paid nearly £650 pounds less for refereeing an Edinburgh Derby or Rangers versus Hearts.

Boys Amateur Championship £350,000 boost for local economy
Prestwick and Dundonald links hosts the 88th Boys Amateur Golf Championship throughout the weekend – with the final set for Sunday 17th. The prestigious tournament has been a stepping stone for many of the world’s best golfers to announce themselves as future stars of the sport. 252 of the world’s best golfers – under the age of eighteen – began the tournament on Tuesday, with the participants having travelled from across the globe to Ayrshire to compete in the event.
Sergio Garcia, Jose Maria Olazabal and Sir Michael Bonallack are all past winners, with major winners Padraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell, Martin Kaymer and Rory McIlroy all having taken part in the developmental stage of their careers. Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, Executive Director – Championships at the R&A, said: “The Boys Amateur Championship is one of the most prestigious events in golf and many players who have taken part over the years have gone on to achieve great things in the game. “With players, their families, friends
and supporters travelling to Ayrshire from Great Britain and Ireland overseas, the championship will generate a significant boost for the local economy and create a lasting tourism benefit for the area.” As well as the honour of hosting the event, Ayrshire will see an influx of cash that will benefit the local economy.
