Kenny MacAskill is under fire and facing calls to resign after one of Scotland top former judges unleashed an attack on him, due to the seemingly secretive decision to arm Scotland’s police officers. Lord McCluskey said he is angry at the “secretive” decision to routinely arm specialist officers on patrol.

It follows increasing anger about Scottish Police officers being actively spotted on the “beat” carrying firearms. Lord McCluskey also referenced the “Americanisation” of the Scottish police force and the greater risk police carrying guns will pose, from civilians being shot, unintentionally or otherwise. Chief Constable Sir Stephen House is also under fire after it was revealed that the decision to arms police officers was discussed with Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill but the discussion was not taken to the Scottish Parliament for further discussion. to incidents that do not require the use of firearms. For instance, in the last few months, officers equipped with firearms have been called to a fight at an Inverness fast food chain and in a similarly unnecessary appearance called upon to investigate a road accident in Glasgow. Earlier in the month it was announced that The Scottish Police Authority and HM Inspectorate of Scotland will separately review the decision to allow officers to carry firearms. There has also been outrage at the deployment of specialist firearms officers on regular patrols in the Highlands and Islands. Places with

In response Police Scotland and the Scottish Government said that with the increase in police officers being equipped with firearms on Scotland’s streets, there would be better protection provided to the public.
