The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, start next week, with the opening ceremony kicking things off at Celtic Park on Wednesday.

The line-up of acts taking to the stage include Rod Stewart, Amy Macdonald and Susan Boyle.

It was revealed that Stewart, 69, whose father was Scottish, was an obvious choice for Glasgow 2014 organisers’ when deciding who will open the Games. One source said: “Rod would top anyone’s list of stars who should perform at the opening ceremony. “He’s a proud Scotsman and represents the country all over the world and he’s a big fan of the Queen.

The will be playing to a 40,000 strong audience at Celtic Park on 23 July, and watched by millions globally on television. It has been revealed that 1.5 million visitors will flock to Glasgow for the sporting event.

Amy has filmed an official Commonwealth Games promo where she sings Rod’s hit Rhythm Of My Heart. It has been rumoured that the pair might duet at the gig. Celtic Park is set to feature Europe’s largest LED screen and the entire pitch will be covered in a specially created stage floor. The celebration will kick off the start of the 10 day event on July 23. Rehearsals were underway last week as 2000 people from communities across Scotland will take part. David Grevemberg, Glasgow 2014 chief executive, said: “The men and women who have come together to be part of the opening ceremony cast are devoting huge amounts of time and effort in what is the adventure of a lifetime. “They are part of something truly historic, which will showcase Glasgow and Scotland as generous hosts with a passion for life.”

BBC set to strike during Commonwealth Games

Journalists and technicians at Glasgow’s BBC Pacific Quay headquarters have agreed to go on strike along with thousands of other BBC journalists and technicians across Britain. The strike which will coincide with opening ceremony of Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games is being blamed on the BBC’s refusal to increase pay for journalists and technicians in the corporation. The NUJ, Bectu and Unite are aiming to walk out around midday on July 23rd due to the ongoing financial dialogue with the BBC. Staff at the BBC believe that they have been unfairly paid and for the last five years have suffered below inflation pay deals, its is also argued that the BBC could in fact be able to pay more.

The pay rise offered by the BBC is £650 increase for anyone who earns less than £50,000 pounds a year and £500 for employees who earn more than £50,000 pounds. Members of the NUJ overwhelmingly voted in favour of strike action 77% per cent in favour, Bectu members also favoured strike action, with 79% per cent voting in favour of strike action. Gerry Morrisey, general secretary of Bectu, said “The BBC can find money for vanity projects, but it cannot find money for staff, whose pay has dropped by 10 per cent in the last five years.” A BBC spokesman said “We will do all we can to bring our audience uniterrupted coverage of the Commonwealth Games.”

Ayrshire firefighters battle deliberate blaze Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) crews in North Ayrshire extinguished a deliberate fire at in a derelict factory in Dalry on Tuesday afternoon.

Appliances from Dalry and Kilbirnie community fire stations were sent to the incident at Drakemyre shortly after 1pm, with firefighters reaching the scene less than five minutes after they were mobilised. The crews arrived to find a welldeveloped fire within the building and the incident commander sent firefighters into the premises to tackle the flames. A third appliance was dispatched from Kilwinning Community Fire Station to increase the resources at the scene and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus put out the fire using a main jet. Station Manager Gregor McPherson, the incident commander, said: “Anyone who deliberately sets a fire is committing a serious crime that endangers themselves, innocent members of the public and emergency responders. “This incident involved a quantity of textiles that produced a large amount of smoke, which spread far beyond the actual seat of fire and caused severe smoke logging throughout the building. “Dealing with it took almost two hours

and required three appliances and their crews from three different stations in North Ayrshire.

“Flames, heat and toxic smoke all spread incredibly quickly and people who set fires can’t know how they will develop.

“These are vital resources for our communities and the simple fact is that having to attend deliberate fires means they could be delayed getting to a real emergency.

“What begins as a small fire in a derelict building or on waste-ground can easily grow to engulf homes or businesses, putting at risk anyone who happens to be in its path.

“It’s absolutely essential that firefighters can quickly get to house fires, road traffic collisions or other incidents where lives are at risk, so we need everyone to help ensure they are not tied-up by the reckless behaviour of a minority.

“By releasing thousands of tonnes of carbon monoxide these fires also impact local air quality and that endangers people with asthma and other breathing conditions. “We work very closely with our

communities to raise awareness of the risks and we’re very grateful to the members of the public who report build-ups of rubbish that could be used to start fires. “By helping identify these hazards before they become potentially serious incidents our residents play an important role in protecting the area. “Those involved in deliberately setting fires needs to understand their actions could have tragic consequences and ask themselves if they could live with being responsible for someone suffering horrific injuries or even losing their life.”

Cones and comedy hit The Cross

Kilmarnock town centre was alive with comedy and cones last Friday when “The Pokey Hat” theatre production came to The Cross with three free live performances. Celebrating stories of Scottish summer holidays, The Pokey Hat took place in and around an ice cream van using puppetry, live music and storytelling to create an imaginative and interactive performance. The show went down really well with shoppers as Town Centre Manager Fiona Nicolson explained: “The show attracted an audience of all ages who thoroughly enjoyed the shows. Beautiful sunny weather added the perfect backdrop to a bit of fun and frolics – this is all about adding vibrancy and creating a fun atmosphere when people come in to the town centre” Created especially for the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme for the Commonwealth Games, The Pokey Hat has toured Scotland with the Queen’s Baton Relay. Childhood songs and games, Italian immigration to the west of Scotland and Scottish holidays featured in this drive down memory lane. The outdoor performances were part of Town Centre Manager Fiona Nicolson’s programme of events to bring vibrancy and fun to the town centre and encourage shoppers to support local businesses.

Celtic Park...Let The Games Begin! Celtic Park will host the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games and is currently home to Celtic Football Club.

Home to Celtic Football Club since 1892, Celtic Park will broadcast the opening of the Commonwealth Games on a 100 ft wide screen which will cover almost the entire South Stand. Celtic Park’s Commonwealth Opening Ceremony will transform the South Stand into Glasgow’s Window on the Commonwealth, and the previously mentioned 100 ft LED backdrop will be the largest screen of its kind ever seen in Europe.

The estimated billion people audience will not be left disappointed as the magical events unfold in the stadium and on the screens of the viewers at home. With the Athletes Village, Celtic Park and the Velodrome being situated within walking distance of each other, athletes will be able to flit between the three venues with ease.

Celtic Park will sail into the record books due to the sheer size of the LED screen and as well as this organisers will aim to completely immerse the

Celtic Park is also easily reached through public transport services, although organisers have warned that Celtic Park will have parking limited to blue badge holders, and for safety reasons no parking on site. It is recommended that all patrons take advantage of the free public transport on offer, with every valid commonwealth ticket.

Tollcross International Swimming Centre has underwent a £14 million pounds refurbishment as well as extension to allow it to fall under the umbrella of Olympic quality.

With all swimming events taking place in Tollcross Swimming Centre the total capacity for spectators will total 5000, with 1000 seats being temporary for the benefit of the Commonwealth Games.

Situated 3.3 miles from Glasgow City Centre, Tollcross has undergone one of the most extensive upgrades to be in line with Commonwealth regulation.

The two events taking place in the pool throughout the competition are Swimming and Diving.

Tollcross International Swimming Centre Tollcross International Swimming Centre now provides a 50 metre, six lane warm up and training pool, bringing world class facilities to the Tollcross area of Glasgow. Altogether the Swimming Centre provides 50 metres, 16 lanes and 2 pools, not only for athletes but when the Commonwealth Games finishes, a lasting legacy for the people of Glasgow.

Swimming will be taking place over six days and is one of the very few sports to have been included in every Commonwealth Games since 1930. The Tollcross International Swimming Centre will also use renewable energy to ensure that the overall impact on the environment if sufficiently lowered, this will happen by aiming to keep the pool warm overnight, thus meaning that it will not need reheated once competitors arrive to practice.

Dog Attack Tenants’ satisfaction

survey 2014

A three-year old boy has been hospitalised after being attacked by a dog in Kilmarnock. The toddler was rushed to Crosshouse Hospital after being attacked by a pitbull and is being treated for facial injuries. The dog has been put down with consent of the owner, police said. A 25-year-old is to be reported to the procurator fiscal in connection with a contravention of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991. The incident happened at around 8pm on Tuesday. It is has been reported that the dog was owned by the boyfriend of the toddler’s mother. One neighbour said: “There have never been any problems with the dog, it was always fine as far as I could tell. “The family are devastated... Police were here last night all over the garden,

and I think the dog has been put down now. A series of measures to improve safety around dangerous dogs are being considered by the Government after a series of incidents that have occurred in recent years. “It’s terrible what happened but it was just a horrible, horrible accident, that’s all.” A police spokeswoman said: “Police Scotland received a report of a threeyear-old-boy having sustained a facial injury after being attacked by a pitbull dog in a garden in Kilmarnock. “The child was taken to Crosshouse Hospital where he received surgery to a facial injury. “He has been detained and staff described his condition as stable.” By

Starting on Monday 28 July, for a period of eight weeks, East Ayrshire Council will be contacting housing tenants to ask for their views on the Council’s provision of housing services. The Council has appointed the Knowledge Partnership, a company which specialises in large scale surveys, to conduct a satisfaction survey of 1,000 tenants from across East Ayrshire.

The door-to-door survey will identify the key priorities for tenants and will help to shape future improvements to the Council’s Housing Service. Responses from this survey will provide a comparison to a similar survey which was conducted back in 2011. There will be nine Knowledge Partnership interviewers working on this project. They will be supplied with photographic Council ID badges and will carry an introductory letter which will explain why they are

carrying out the survey. If tenants have any concerns about the legitimacy of the interviewer, or have any questions about the survey, they can call the Customer Liaison Team from East Ayrshire Council on 01563 554878.

Lottery funding to help family charities Families across Scotland will benefit after the Big Lottery have awarded charities a number of grants.

In total, 13 projects have been awarded £7.4m, with five of the projects working to help parents and children. The largest sum was given to charity Children 1st, who received £966,177. They will use it to run care support services in Ayrshire, East Lothian and Moray.

Maureen McGinn, Scotland chairwoman of the Big Lotto fund, said: “The aim of our Investing in Communities programme is to support people and communities in greatest need and, now, 13 more projects across the country will be able to do that.

“We are keen to support many more projects like these and would encourage groups to come and talk to us if they have an idea.”

Strathclyde Country Park The picturesque Strathclyde Country Park is going to be a perfect setting for the Triathlon event. Located on the south-east of Glasgow, the park is a popular choice to carry out sporting events, such as rowing, sailing and cycling to name a few. For the Triathlon competition, the swimming will take place in Strathclyde Loch, with a 1,500-metre open-water swim. They will then be switching to a 40-kilometre road cycle and finishing with a 10-kilometre run, which will be carried out along the surrounding roads and pathways. Scotland’s number one triathlete David McNamee will be joined by the world’s leading triathletes, Alistair and Jonathan Brownlie who will be representing England at the Games.

This year will be the first time a Mixed Team Relay is part of the Commonwealth Games. This involves a team of two men and two women who each complete a ‘super sprint’ triathlon of swimming, cycling and running before handing over to their next team mate.

Prestwick Airport in running to be home base in new space race Prestwick Airport in Ayrshire has been told that it is on the shortlist to have the first British spaceport built at the under pressure airport. If Prestwick Airport succeeds in being awarded the rights to build the first spaceport in Britian it will be a remarkable turn around for the struggling airport. In early July Ryanair announced it was slashing the amount of flights flying in and out of the airport whilst increasing the number flying in and out of Glasgow Airport. Prior to that Whizz Air also moved its flights to Glasgow Airport.

The Government aims to utilise nearly 10% of the world’s space market, if the target is met the value to the economy could be worth as much as £40 billion pounds, and provide as many as 100,000 jobs.

The Scottish Government has spent £15 million pounds so far on sustaining the airport and before the SNP brought the airport under public ownership it was haemorrhaging £1 million pounds per month. Prestwick Airport, if chosen as the base for the spaceport, will open as early as 2018. Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic and XCOR are both expected to use the spaceport to launch people into orbit. There will also be an emphasis on shuttling commercial

There are certain criteria that have to be met to be considered for the spaceport responsibility, sufficient distance between the airport and densely populated areas as well as a runway that can be extended to more than 3,000 metres.

South Scotland MSP Chic Brodie said that ambition must be shown to save Prestwick, in his statement he said “Some months ago I tried to engage with Virgin Galactic and its owner Richard Branson when it was suggested it might be looking for alternatives to its current space arrangements to little success.”

With the Government hoping that Richard Branson builds a British port for his Virgin Galactic project.

He continued “Prestwick has the right weather conditions, the right size of accommodating runways,

The Clay Target(also known as clay pigeon shooting) is the art of shooting a moving clay target, fired into the sky, if the athlete successfully makes contact with the target a puff of smoke will be seen to come off the target. Full Bore is unique to the Commonwealth Games, it features athletes having to aim at targets from a variety of distances and this type of event only appears in the Commonwealth Games. Pistol and Small Bore involves athletes hitting stationary targets across distances ranging from ten to 50 metres. Both competitions requires patience, concentration and control to guarantee a high score. Pistol and Small Bore shooting is about target accuracy as much as it is making contact with the target.

Diving will be held at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city. The Royal Commonwealth Pool offers a dramatic setting for the Diving competitions, with Arthur’s Seat outside and award-winning architecture inside. The original Royal Commonwealth Pool was designed by RMJM Architects in 1967 for the Edinburgh

Fox fail in wiley takeover bid for Time Warner

Time Warner have announced that Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox empire failed in an audacious bid to takeover the company last month. Time Warner rejected the deal reportedly worth $80 billion dollars and have since announced that they are in no further discussion with the Australian magnate’s company. Time Warner, which is the third most successful broadcasting and cable companies, behind The Walt Disney Company and Comcast, employs more than 34,000 staff and has a revenue of $29.7 billion dollars per year. 21st Century Fox is the company created after judges demanded that News Corporation be split into two smaller companies. 21st Century Fox are owners of the Fox network, Fox News and have nearly a forty percent stake in BSkyB. Time Warner are responsible for TBS, HBO and Warner Brothers amongst others and refused to accept 21st

Century Fox’s offer of $85 dollars per share. Although Time Warner only released the news of the attempted takeover recently, Jeff Bewkes Chief Executive at Time Warner admitted he pondered over the deal for a month before deciding it wasn’t in the companies best interest to allow the merger. A statement released on behalf of Time Warner said “after lengthy discussions we have decided it was not in our best interests or those of its shareholders to accept the proposal or to pursue any further discussion with Fox.” After the announcement Time Warner’s shares jumped 16% per cent to $89.39 while Fox’s shares dropped 4.9% per cent to $33.47. If the merger had been successful, the two companied combined would have become one of the biggest in history and reshaped the landscape of the television and entertainment industry.

Hampden Park

Out of all the venues for the Games, Hampden has been subject to the greatest level of transformation, having been converted from a football stadium to a world class athletics venue, no expense has been spared to make what was at one time the worlds largest stadium into a modern marvel of ingenuity and Scottish resourcefulness. In order to accommodate the new athletics track, the entire surface of

the track has been raised by almost two metres on an intricate network of stilts, removing the first eight rows of seats, reducing the capacity of the stadium by 44,000, in exchange for an increased track size but bringing the spectators in the remaining seating closer to the action on the track the transformation has cost a total of £14 million, a massive saving over building a new stadium just for the Games. The engineering and concept behind this conversion are pioneering world firsts, with no other project of it’s type

having been attempted before. The raised track itself has already been earmarked for further use after the Games, with Glasgow City Council bosses planning to move the custom made track structure to the Crownpoint Athletics facility in the East End, an innovative plan which is intended to take the pressure off of the Scotstoun Athletics Centre and following Legacy 2014 plans of creating a new national athletics centre which will serve as a hub for Scotland, hosting regional and national events in the future.

Glasgow National Hockey Centre

Glasgow’s oldest and most iconic park is set to host the Commonwealth field hockey tournament at the new world class National Hockey Centre which has been specially designed and built to host the event which will include ten teams from all across the Commonwealth, playing across the duration of the Games. The new National Hockey Centre boasts two international standard, state of the art, synthetic water based pitches which are complemented by athlete support facilities and official adjudication buildings. The centre which is situated in the middle of the historic Glasgow Green, will, after the games have reached completion, be the headquarters for

the Scottish Hockey Association and provide training facilities for schools and a venue for competitions in the heart of the city. Glasgow Green itself is set to play an important role in the Commonwealth Games as it is the stage for the start and finish lines of the Glasgow Marathon which will take place on Sunday the 27th, the Road Cycling on the 31st and the Time Trial which is also being held on the 31st. Alongside the areas importance to the actual sports during the course of the Games, Glasgow Green will also be host to the largest Festival of the Games, where spectators will be able to gather and watch the action on a number of large screens and even take part in demonstrations that will be ran over the course of the Games fortnight.

Cathkin Braes Mountain Bike Trails

The Cathkin Braes Bike Trails have been created especially for the Commonwealth Games, situated in Cathkin Braes Country Park the trails aim to give a challenging but rewarding event that is set in an area that offers a spectacular view of Glasgow. The course, which is less than fifteen minutes away from the Commonwealth Village is partly owned by Glasgow City Council and also South Lanarkshire Council. Both Council’s worked in collaboration with each other as well as the best course designers in the world. Ensuring that the course will be regarded as one of the best in the world. The course will be kept as a permanent

venue after the competition for which local communities and international competitors will be able to use the trails. The Mountain Bike Trails before the Commonwealth Games will have already been used for an international competition. As the British Cross Country Championships are taking place in the Cathkin Bike Trails during July. More than 800 children participated in a competition to name some of the main features of the course, some of the successful entries were Brig O’Doom Broken Biscuits and Clyde Climb. With a number of bus routes serving the Cathkin Braes Commonwealth Mountain Bike Trails, the bus route, stops a short walking distance from the trails.

660 arrested in child abuse inquiry

More than 650 suspected paedophiles have been arrested in connection with accessing child abuse images online. The National Crime Agency (NCA) have revealed that those arrested included doctors, teachers, scout leaders, care workers and former police officers. The agency said that more than 400 children have been protected as a result. The arrests were made across the UK and the majority had no previous contacts with police. Officers have searched 833 properties and examined 9,172 computers, phones and hard drives. It has been revealed that 13 arrests were made in Scotland, 14 in Northern Ireland and 59 in Wales.

Two of the most notable changes were those of Michael Gove, the much maligned education secretary to the position of chief whip within the party and William Hague, who has came to be seen within the party and to traditional Tory voters as having been won over by Europe who was transferred to the position of leader of

Cannibal Nurse plotted to behead teenage girl

Prime Minister David Cameron said the NCA was “doing a very good job at bringing all the modern methods of policing and technology together to go after the perpetrators of a particularly horrible crime”. Claire Lilley, head of online safety at the NSPCC said the operation had rescued children from abuse. But she warned: “Industry has to find inventive ways of blocking the flow of such horrendous pictures which are only produced through the suffering of defenceless children - many of who are not even old enough to go to school. “So while this operation must be rightly applauded we should view it as yet another warning sign that far more needs to be done if we are to stem the sordid trade in these images, which are often used by those who go on to abuse children.”

A man with cannibalism fantasies planned to kill a 14-year-old girl before eating her, a court heard. Dale Bolinger, 57, was speaking to the girl on a fetish chat room, where he told her: “I’ll kill you then eat everything.” He arranged to meet the girl at a train station near where he lives in Kent. However, the girl failed to show up. The sickening conversation between the two leading up to the meeting reveals that Bolinger had told the girl: “Roasts, sausages even your offal. I’ve a great recipe for Haggis and Black (blood) pudding. You’ll be completely consumed.”

Dream Interpretation

Spells

Analysis

Let me explain that a spell is an intention set with the purest heart for the greatest good, nothing more nothing less. It ‘s simple, set your heart and intention on your wish, expect it to happen and be grateful for the joy it beings - that’s what a spell is. Anyone who sets out to cause harm or ill intent will receive that back ten fold so, in my book its an absolute NO go area.

Attract a soul mate - The Tarot

To attract that holiday love and romance into your life the tarot can be a powerful tool to draw close a new potential partner. From a deck of Tarot cards take the Knight of cups, the two of Cups and the Star and place then all in a row next to each other on a pink cloth and then around the cloth place 6 small red candles. The knight of cups is the element of water and emotion and brings forward love and proposals – the two of cups creates a loving union and the star seals it with hope for the future.

and space to yourself where you won’t be disturbed then, start to write a note of all the qualities you want the person your attracting to have along with things like, their looks and characteristics etc.

Then thread together the note and your picture – this binds you to your desire in pure love, which is symbolised by the white thread.

Place this into a small bucket of sand and on top of this put your rose quartz stone; if possible leave it near running water.

The cards are laid out on a pink cloth are to enhance love and the 6 candles represent the number of decision and red for passion.

This spell is best done on the night of the full moon and once you have done all of this sit back and send out your request to the universe saying; I call upon the forces of the Arcana and the universe to help me find my true love – the person who will be right for me and who will love me for who I am.

You will need a rose quartz crystal, some white thread, a needle, a picture of you and some notepaper and a pen. First of all create some quiet time

To add magic, zest and passion to a relationship get yourself a piece of ginseng, a picture of the goddess of Love Aphrodite and some musk incense. In front of the picture place your piece of Ginseng, which is to enhances the sexual and sensual elements and lit the musk incense.

Summer is a magical time when people and things come alive; we have a spring in our step and look forward to new and exciting things ahead.

From the 8th of July to the 4th of August in Celtic Astrology the Holy rules and is holds a position of nobility as well as having powerful leadership quality and so, if you find yourself in need of something to assist you in overcoming an emotional issues then look no further.

Ask the love Goddess Aphrodite to help create the passion and sensuality that you crave in your newfound relationship and wait for the spell to kick in - be ready for the embers of love to be ignited.

Binding The love knot

Find yourself three pieces of think thread, Red for Passion, Pink for Love and Green to bond your hearts together.

Braid the three threads into a bracelet and while doing so imagine that you are attracting to you the perfect partner who will bring with them all the qualities you have been hoping for in a soul mate. Once the bracelet is made place it on your right wrist, as it is closest to your heart – do this especially on the night of the full moon and allow the spell to work its magic.

Find yourself a holly leaf and place it into a muslin bag along with a small note asking for help in resolving the issue you face. Then go to your favourite place by the water and throw the bag into the water allowing it to be carried away knowing that the universe will assist you in cleansing and clearing your unwanted issues.

Your dreams are a river of wisdom; they flow from your subconscious mind carrying images, colours and feelings in the stream. By interpreting the symbols in your dreams we can uncover information about you; we can discover what really motivates you; and we can identify the fears that hold you back. Your dreams are as unique as you are; think of them as coded messages sent by your subconscious mind to be received, noted and interpreted by your conscious mind. Often, what is revealed in the code of your dreams can be helpful, inspiring and uplifting. Since your dreams are special to you, you are the best interpreter of your subconscious codes. Although I can offer you a springboard of ideas as to the meaning of your dream, the best interpretation is always reached by going within and asking ‘what does this symbol mean to me?’

Sample Dream

Simply leave it there until you attract the partner of your dreams.

Then leave the rest to the universal energies.

Fated Attraction – Rose Quartz Crystal

Seduction – Aphrodite Goddess of Love

The sand represents yo ur holiday but also the grounding of the relationship, the water is the fresh emotional energy providing plenty a clean start.

Overcoming emotional issues – the Holly leaf

there’s no way for me to get it. I start feeling really panicky and stressed because I’m lost without my kit. I wake up with feelings of sadness and disappointment because I’m dreaming something disturbing about a time in my life that was actually really happy. Can you interpret this dream for me?

I have a recurring dream that I am at sea on a ship I used to work on; but the ship is different and I can’t find my way around. I open doors and walk around but I just can’t get my bearings. I then realize that I am supposed to start work and I am unprepared. I have forgotten my uniform and kit and

There are three significant elements to this dream that require interpretation: Being at sea, feeling lost in a maze, and feeling unprepared. Feeling unprepared and lost are common dream experiences for someone who finds it difficult to relinquish control. If you feel you must solve, help, do, repair, fix, and control in life, the anxiety that comes along with the need to control is expressed in your dream as the opposite of control: helplessness. In this case, you are helpless in that you are lost and unprepared with no way to get back in control. Dreaming of being at sea is about your emotional state, particularly in relation to family. You are a person who cares deeply about their family, which can sometimes lead to feelings of anxiety and pressure to do the right thing without making a mistake, but of course, that is an unachievable standard to hold yourself up to. Being as caring and loving as your dream denotes is enough, you do not have to be in control to show you care. This dream suggests the person may experience feelings of tension, frustration and anxiety in your waking life, but that these all stem from a desire to show that the are a loving, caring and dedicated father/husband etc. On a personal level, your dream is asking you to reduce your levels of stress and anxiety. Meditation and walking alone are both good ways to do this. In terms of family, practice shrugging, not knowing the answer, and letting others take the lead, and you’ll see that love and closeness blossoms when it is allowed to get out of control. Spooky places to visit in

Scotland

The Secret Bunker in Troywood, Fife, St Andrews Spook Scale

1

Originally a farmhouse the building sits in Troywood in St Andrews and from the outside you would never know it held so many secrets. It was converted into an army base and 100 feet below ground leads to the command centre where things would have been controlled from had there been a nuclear war. There are still a few spooks floating around and as you can imagine many of them are military personnel. During my visit there was not a great deal happening but they do have a few nights where you can go and sit in and wait for the ghosts to arrive.

An old manor house that was used by King James 1V as a hunting lodge – the lodge dates back to the 1600’s when it was both wealthy and prestigious.

When it comes to spooky places Scotland has its fair share of them. There is everything from the Gray Lady although; I have never come across her to the old souls that once connected with the building. Here are 5 spooky places for you to check out for yourself – I have rated them on a scale of 1-5 1 being the least spook factor and 5 the best.

Star Signs

Flow The

Joan Charles

I am delighted to be delivering your stars although; I won’t be doing them in the traditional way, as I am not an astrologer. For many years I have provided the stars using Tarot cards and that is what I will be doing here so, I guess in a sense they should be called, Taroscopes. Anyway, I do hope you enjoy what the cards have to say.

Aries

In life there is ebb and flow and it’s a case of taking the good with the bad and seeing the potential in everything. I can see good news and whatever it is it’s a case of looking at the bigger picture.

Taurus

Keeping an eye on the money you have may be important to you just now but don’t go into obsessive mode other wise you will drive yourself and others mad. Create a plan and work to it.

Gemini I’m sensing an upset over a child and it will be something that

blows over but as a parent you will be keen to see them in a better mood. Maybe keeping your own council on this is the best way forward.

Cancer

A celebration will be a good opportunity to get out and let your hair down for a change. I’m seeing this connecting with a male who is close to you. The month of September is also relevant.

Leo

Now, the best piece of advice I can give you is not to play with fire because, if you do then your likely to get your fingers burned. Stay clear of situations that will attract more attention than you want.

Virgo Interesting times as something new in a work sense is presented

to you that you could be involved in and make your mark. You are known for your strong leadership qualities and this is what is called for now.

Libra

The burden of work could be weighing you down but if you just keep moaning and don’t do anything about it then nothing will change. Take charge of this situation and change it to something more suitable.

Scorpio

No point in crying over spilt milk that’s won’t get you anywhere; instead look at ways you could turn this to your favor. Your attitude about things will either make it positive or keep it negative – you choose.

Sagittarius

Being a victim of your own circumstances is where I feel you are at present and the point is you have the power to change this. Being a martyr to a cause that doesn’t serve you it no good at all.

Capricorn

You have the whole world in your hands and are able to balance things quite well at the moment – this is the way you want things to stay but, it would need you to keep focused on it to do so.

Aquarius

No matter what is thrown at you, you come up smelling of roses and folk wonder how on earth you manage to do it. Not much will keep you down and this is a quality that people admire and respect.

Pisces Better and calmer waters are ahead and your ship has set sail

into an ocean of tranquility so make the most of this as times have been trying to say the least. You are reaching your dreams so follow that star.

By Elizabeth Francis

Synchronicity - defined as the simultane¬ous flow of two or more events that appear related, but seem to have no causal connection - is something we all experience as part of our everyday lives, and one of the most common ways we can interact with Spirit. Working with synchronicity is akin to having a second language: once you become fluent in it you find yourself able to understand life at a new level, one that you may not have been able to appreciate before.

Whether random or planned, causal events seem to come in all shapes and sizes. Some could be seen as ‘mistakes’ - the unforeseen consequence of our own actions - whilst others may appear as coincidences that we have no control over at all. From the perspective of metaphysics, this is a false distinction: there are no mistakes or coincidences and therefore, irrespective of whether the causal event is random or planned, everything that happens does so for a reason. As causal events occur, they set off a chain reaction, which enables the synchronicity that contributes toward creating what I call an individual’s ‘obvious’ reality. Because on the surface these events don’t appear to be connected, we perceive them as singular entities, stopping where they started. As a consequence, the purpose and meaning held within the chain reaction – even the chain reaction itself – remains hidden from us. Hidden, that is, until you begin to connect the dots on a conscious

www.ayrshire-news.co.uk level: until you start to translate synchronicity. Once this begins, the purpose and meaning is revealed and everything becomes clearer, because you are being given all the information, confirmation, inspiration and/or enlightenment that you’ll need to develop a greater understanding of life itself. This process culminates in the creation of something like a second, ‘hidden’ reality that runs beneath the first, ‘obvious’ one. Let’s consider the synchronicity occurring right in this moment. As you read this article, you and I are creating a chain of causal events, which are producing an ‘obvious’ reality:

receive information on the day that you needed to receive it. Again, there are no coincidences. As you’ll understand, even from this simple example, the ‘hidden’ reality is an integral part of our being on a daily basis. More so, it is connected to our subconscious and our pre-subconscious selves, both of which are used by our higher selves to connect us to the network of human consciousness. When our higher selves are in control of us in the ‘obvious’ reality, we tend to appear irrational and this is one of the reasons we can be perceived as acting uncharacteristically or making ‘mistakes.’

• Myself, who wrote the article • The newspaper, which printed the article • You, who are actively reading the article For some readers a translation of the ‘obvious’ to the ‘hidden’ may simply be that this isn’t a paper you usually read, but for some reason, today, you are. Perhaps you found it on a friend’s coffee table and had a spark of interest, or maybe it was left on a waiting room chair. Perhaps you read this paper regularly and you’ve been waiting for causality to catch up! The decision made in the ‘obvious’ reality, led to a further decision in the ‘hidden’ reality, which in turn must be taken back to the ‘obvious’ to continue the chain of events. In this way, the ‘hidden’ reality produces many of the scenarios that we eventually play out in the ‘obvious’ reality, even using them to manufacture our lives. In the ‘hidden’ reality, your essential action of reading the paper when you normally may not allowed you to

So, finally, how do you translate synchronicity? The only thing you need is an open mind that is receptive to the concept that all things are possible and anything can happen. We think, therefore we are: when you accept that the ‘hidden’ reality exists, it does. By recognizing even ‘mistakes’ as essential actions that reveal the ‘hidden’ reality, by identifying both the ‘obvious’ and ‘hidden’ aspects of chains of events, you can walk an easier path to your destination (or your destiny!)

The Big Fake Tan Guide:

Par t 2

Best Lotion Tan James Read Sleep Mask Tan Body, jamesreadtan.com

£40.00

Out of all the lotion tans I tested out this was by far the best. The silky clear gel slided on, soothing the skin and a small amount went far. I applied it with a mitt (be careful when applying as it’s not tinted so you can’t see where you’ve put it) and it dried quickly. The colour had started showing after a few hours and it developed into a darker shade by the next morning. It’s quite pricey for a fake tan but I am really impressed with this colour and it made my skin feel nice and soft!

Best Spray Tan For All My Eternity Spray Tan forallmyeternity.com

£24.99

www.ayrshire-news.co.uk If you read last week’s Life & Style section, you will have seen Part One of our Bike Fake Tan Guide, where I was testing out Best Mousse, Best Face and Best Instant tan. So, if you’re a big fake tan fan like I am, I hope it helps! Welcome to our final part of our Big Fake Tan Guide! By

Kaitlin McManus

The best thing about trying new brands, is when you come across a product that you love! This spray is by far the best i’ve tried. I sprayed it on my mitt and it was easy to apply. There is a slight tint which is great so you can see where you are applying it to prevent leaving streaks. It is really moisturising and dried quickly. I tried the medium-dark, which developed into a gorgeous deep bronze colour, and was long lasting. Overall, I am very impressed, and I will be trying more from For All My Eternity in the the future.

Best Overall Cocoa Brown 1 Hour Tan Superdrug

£7.99

Now this is a product that I am REALLY excited about. I discovered Cocoa Brown around Christmas time when I was drawn to the bright pink packaging while I was browsing my local Superdrug. As it was fairly new, I hadn’t heard anything about it before so I was apprehensive when I first used it. However, my nerves were soon settled. I have tried every tan in the range and my favourite is the 1 hour tan. It gives a beautiful colour and guess what... It smells amazing! Never in my life have I found a fake tan that smells nice - and i’ve been using fake tan for almost 8 years! It is really easy to apply, it skooshes out like a hair mousse, in the way it swells up when it comes out. I’ve tried both Original and Dark, and I love both. In my opinion, this is my favourite everyday tanner.

Beauty Tips and Tricks of the Trade... Want the tricks that professional makeup artists use for a flawless finish and jaw-dropping glamour? Make Up Artist Gemma Elizabeth shares a few of her secrets with us...

Use a Serum!

Layer your Mascaras!

Eyebrows are Essential!

I first discovered this beauty secret around a year ago when I had terrible acne scarring on my face and was ready to try anything! A serum is formulated with smaller molecules than a moisturiser, so can penetrate deeper into the skin, allowing the skin to be repaired.

I don’t use one individual mascara; I use three - three different wands, for three different effects. You can buy mascaras on the market that

Never forget about the brows! Remember the eyebrows shape the face in the same way that a frame does with a picture. Make sure you get the right shape for your face, as not everyone is going to suit that famous high arch! Fill in the brows with a product that works for you; gel, pencil or powder.

Exfoliate your face and body! Exfoliating your skin helps to remove dead skin cells, and lets the fresh skin underneath breathe, as well as allowing your moisturising to absorb better. The standard is to exfoliate twice a week, but I use an exfoliating brush which allows you to softly exfoliate the skin every day. It’s important to exfoliate the rest of your skin too. Be sure to moisturise the skin after exfoliating and after every time you cleanse the skin.

Face Mists

do several in one, but I much prefer the effect of using a light coat of each of them individually. I use one to define the lash, one to curl and lengthen, and one to volumise. This prevents the clumping effect caused by applying too many coats of the same mascara.

Different from Setting Sprays, these are products that help keep you cool and keep your skin hydrated and makeup fresh when out in that glorious Scottish sun! To get in touch with Gemma, you can email her info@gemmaelizabeth.co.uk, phone 07873 416683 or go to her www.gemmaelizabeth.co.uk

Scent your home this summer…

When I heard that Baylis & Harding had brought out a new home fragrance range, I was very excited. As a fan of the body lotion and hand soaps, I was very excited when a candle and room diffuser arrived and I couldn’t wait to try them out. Both scented with the restful fragrance of Sweet Mandarin & Grapefruit, the smell hit me as soon as I opened the candle. It smelled good enough to eat. There was nothing better, after a long day at the office, coming home and being welcomed with the subtle yet fruity fragrance. With a zesty spice, it is perfect for summer, because unlike a festive spiced apple, the blend of jasmine and sweet mandarin, grapefruit and lemon makes for a light summery scent. Stylish and oozing luxury, the range is perfect for creating a soothing atmosphere. With a minimum burning time of 30 hours, I have been burning the candle for a few hours at a time to make it last. Rotating the sticks in the diffuser every so often will ensure the fragrance can be released. The Sweet Mandarin & Grapefruit Diffuser, By Kaitlin £15, and McManus the Sweet Mandarin & Grapefruit Single Wick Candle, £8, are available from stores nationwide.

The Smart Girl’s Guide to...

Having a ‘Stay-Cation’

What is the first thing you think of when you hear the word summer? I don’t know about you, but for me it’s one word and one word only. Holiday. Summer is the best time to go abroad, hit the beach and forget about work. But what if you are not going away? Don’t despair, more people are opting to stay closer to home rather than go abroad. Here are our top picks for going on a ‘stay-cation’ in the UK! By

Kaitlin McManus

Edinburgh

Cardiff

Liverpool

Why not pack a wee case and head through to Edinburgh? It’s not far, so it’s perfect for new parents leaving the baby for the first time or with wee ones nervous with sleepovers. If you are splashing out, treat yourselves to the Balmoral Hotel. On a budget? There are plenty of budget hotels and B&B’s. Take a venture up Princes Street and have a laugh at all the cheesy Scottish souvenirs, visit the Edinburgh Castle then find a wee pub somewhere for a well earned glass of wine, cheers!

Shopaholic? Then get yourself to Cardiff. The Welsh city is in the top ten shopping destinations in Britain. For high street treats, head to St David’s Shopping Centre. Looking for something vintage or a bit different?

If you’re a big Beatles fan, Liverpool is for you! Check out the Casbah Coffee Club where it all began, where the Beatles started playing as a band. You can also have a tour with The National Trust of Mendips, which is John Lennon’s childhood home. Visiting with a footie fan?

The Victorian arcades are the place for you. There are six arcades bustling with vintage clothes stores, craft shops and – to rest your feet – coffee shops.

Visit LFC Museum and Tour Centre for a tour behind the scenes, visit the dressing room (it will be player-free i’m afraid ladies!) and take a seat in the Manager’s dug out.

The Power of Protein As any regular gym goer will tell you, protein shakes actually make a huge difference to your gym experience. Less muscle ache, more noticeable results, quicker recovery time, definite essential, gym, nutritional value. The only problem with knowing that protein shakes are beneficial to your well worked body is having the knowledge of knowing which one to buy. There are quite simply hundreds of protein options to choose from. Lean, Whey, Diet Whey, Total Protein, Vegetarian, Vegan, or Soy, and literally dozens or possibly hundreds of different proteins to choose from. After dabbling in several varieties on Myprotein.com I found Hurricane

XS which seems to have been the perfect mix for post workout ache, Currently its also less pricey than many of the other websites (currently less than £30 pounds at Myprotein. com). 29.6 grams of protein in each 70g serving alongside 20.3g of Carbohydrates, the fat content is an excellent 2.5g of fat, which is far lower than many of the other varieties. Taste wise, there are countless to choose from ranging from chocolate to blueberry, or mocha to maple pecan, you will find a flavour of your fancy. Choosing chocolate I was very pleased with the flavour, tasting not to dissimilar to chocolate milkshake and without any clumps or bits to do battle with.

Personal choice leads me to drink the shake with water (and the milk might get warm by the time I finish a workout). Compared to some of the other shakes I’ve tried Hurricane XS, ticks all the boxes, especially if like me, you’re looking for lean gains, and not wanting to bulk up to the shape of the incredible hulk. Stomach wise, there is very little or no extra gaseous escapes (no noticeably extra farting!) All in all. For gradual, natural, noticeable, muscle gains, less two day ache, less flatulence than some others and a taste that is quite pleasant. Myprotein.com’s Hurricane XS will be hard to beat. Highly recommended. By

PROPERTY

Grand Designs property performs poorly on the market A Kilcreggan property 40 miles outside of Glasgow, which was featured on Grand Designs in 2004 has re-appeared on the market for an asking price £5000 below what it cost to build the property a decade ago.

According to the price quoted on the 2004 episode of the popular home design programme, which was £380,000, the property has bucked the trend of appreciating values for Scottish prime property being offered for just £375,000. The property is being sold by it’s original owners who featured on Grand Designs 10 years ago according to the prime property specialist agents Savills. The Kilcreggan property has fared extremely poorly in comparison to other properties which have featured on Grand Designs, with the vast majority of them having

either doubled their value or at least appreciated in value to some degree. Some of the properties have increased their value by as much as £1 million since being sold on, however the Scottish market which has up until recently been unaffected by the independence referendum is starting to show signs of shakiness, due to uncertainty around financial issues such as currency and the possibility of a rate increase, particularly in the

MA S DIS SIVE CO SU UN MM TS! ER

prime market. Andrew Perratt, head of residential sales for Savills in Scotland said: ‘The market’s definitely in recovery mode but with this referendum hanging over us, there’s been very little growth in value. Following the referendum, if there is a no vote, the market will recover and recover very quickly but if there is a yes vote, there will be a few more years of uncertainty.’ By

Sealed bids making a comeback In a sure sign that the property market is starting to make a come back and build steam despite the efforts of Mark Carney and the Bank of England, sealed bids on properties are making a comeback across the country, particularly in London where the property market is heating up to boiling point.

A sealed bid is for some the most risky but at times rewarding for those astute enough to judge the value of the property and what other buyers are willing to pay for it. In a sealed bid scenario, potential

buyers place their bid into a sealed envelope, pass it on to the sellers and hope that they have outbid their rivals and bagged a deal at the same time. In such a bid, there are no competing bids, no negotiations after the offer has been put forward and no knowledge of what other interested parties have bid, leading to a windfall for the property seller who can secure the highest price for their property in an extremely short space of time without having to deal with competing offers. According to reports, the numbers of sealed bids particularly in London where competition for property is fierce, has matched that of 2007, when

PROPERTY Seven figure sum in damages awarded to aristocrat

the market was at it’s absolute peak. However, there can be some problems with the sealed bid system, such as when a seller accepts the highest bid on a property, there is no guarantee that the accepted bidder will pay up if they feel that they are going to be paying well above the perceived value of the property. There are also problems for the buyer as the vendor may end up accepting a bid after the sealed bids have been revealed to them as the system is not legally binding in any way until contracts are signed. By

Lauren Black

On Monday of this week aristocrat Edward Iliffe, heir to his great-grandfathers newspaper fortune, was awarded an undisclosed seven figure sum in reparations from a building company which was found responsible for his £4 million island retreat burning down in 2012. The company was found to have been responsible for the incorrect installation of a wood burner and accompanying flue which were found

to be the cause of the fire. At the time of the fire the £4 million property was in the final stages of construction, when the property caught fire, 45 fire men had to be ferried out to the private island to extinguish the blaze that resulted in the total destruction of the home. The company put forward the defence that it was a sub contractor acting on their behalf and that the installation of the wood burner and flue was done without a proper contract being in place. By

Prius Plug-In sets record for fuel economy at the ‘Ring

My Car Check publishes used car buying statistics

Leading consumer vehicle data provider My Car Check has published a number of statistics on the used car market and the risks of buying a car without being informed on the vehicles history. In the statistics released by the company which uses the police’s vehicle registration database show’s that in the last two years the number of vehicles with an adverse history marker, i.e a vehicle that has been stolen, previously written off or is subject to an unpaid finance agreement, has increased by over two percent to 21.69% of vehicles on UK roads. In a break down it shows that the number of cars shown as written off in the last two years has increased to 15.04 percent, meaning a larger number of cars are either being restored after a serious accident or that their plates have been cloned.

This week in a change of pace from the usual news from the ‘Green Hell’, Toyota has set a new never before measured record at the Nurburgring for, of all things, fuel efficiency. The eco conscious manufacturer set out to challenge conventions at the most hallowed altar of speed in the world by pulling off the most sensible lap of the track ever. The test which was intended to replicate the average commute thanks to the ‘Ring’s 1000ft elevation change and mix of fast and slow corners, was carried out in accordance with the usual rules and regulations on a public day at the track including the 60 km/h minimum average speed. The engineers at Toyota were confident that the Prius-Plug In would be capable of completing an entire lap of the track using nothing but battery power, with the Nordschleife coming in at 12.9 miles, right on the boundary of the battery power range. According to Toyota, the Prius used in the test received no special modifications or tweaks apart from some low rolling resistance tyres and some choice aesthetic modifications courtesy of TRD. The driver selected for the test was renowned motoring journalist and Japanese car expert Joe Clifford. During his lap in the car, Joe, managed to hit a staggering

698mpg smashing the official figures provided by Toyota of 134mpg on a combined cycle of a similar distance, according to Toyota technicians, the car used less than five tablespoons of fuel to complete its sedate tour of the Nordschleife. Toyota are saying that what made this possible is the combination of their latest 1.8l petrol unit paired up with the latest in lithium-ion battery technology, which provides a higher energy density than previous batteries used in Prius’. This new battery tech allows the new model to travel further and faster on battery power alone. Clifford spoke after the test saying: ‘Although the 12.9-mile distance is similar to a typical commuter trip, the difference here is a rise and fall in elevation of around 1,000 feet. In fact it was only on one long climb that the petrol engine cut in, and then only for a short while. Without that, we think we might have even achieved the ultimate 999.9mpg readout – the highest figure the display can show. We used no special tricks for this test. We simply took a fully charged car, fitted it with low rolling resistance tyres and drove the lap, among all the other public drivers taking the opportunity to experience the challenge of the Nürburgring.’ By

Michael McDaid

The number of cars which have been classed as still being subject to financial payments has increased by two percent to 6.55% and the number of cars that have been reported as stolen and are being resold has fallen to a paltry 0.87%.

Roger Powell, Divisional Head at CDL Vehicle Information Services, which owns MyCarCheck.com, commented: ‘Since the summer of 2012, we’ve seen an increase in the percentage of cars with adverse history, particularly in the previously written-off and finance debt categories. The good news for used car buyers is the percentage of checks showing a stolen marker has fallen slightly over the last couple of years. However, with criminals increasingly using high tech equipment to steal cars, establishing whether your potential pride and joy is stolen remains a key reason to check before you buy. The vehicle provenance industry used to be all about confirming if a car had been written-off or stolen. Today a major part of our business is flagging up that a vehicle has finance debt against it. Used car buyers need to be aware that the registered keeper of a vehicle – the name on the V5C form, the logbook – is not necessarily the legal owner. Unlike a personal loan, under both PCP and HP the finance company often retains legal ownership of the vehicle’ By

Smoking ban in cars with children moves forward

This week daft regulations to prohibit smoking in cars carrying children were passed on for consultation by the government, anti smoking charity Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) has welcomed this latest development in the process. According to a recent poll conducted by YouGov on behalf of ASH, 77% of adults agree that smoking should be banned in cars carrying children. These findings were echoed by MP’s who approved the measure by a vote of 376 to 107 in parliament, according

to ASH this is an even higher level of support than for the banning of smoking in public places. Chief executive of ASH Deborah Arnott said: ‘Cars are small tin boxes where concentrations of tobacco smoke can reach dangerous levels very quickly. As David Cameron himself has said, the time has come for it to be illegal to make children breathe in these toxic fumes. Laws stopping smoking in cars with children are popular with the public, with parliament and with children and we urge the government to bring them into force before the next election.’

Research reveals heart overrules head when choosing a new car

New research reveals Brits choose car comfort over safety, design over insurance cost and gadgets over fuel efficiency. A new study published by high value motor insurer Hiscox shows that our heart rules our head when it comes to buying a car. While we want to believe we are acting rationally, the report shows much of the decision is actually based on emotions. The Hiscox Head vs. Heart Motor study lifts the lid on the conscious and subconscious influences that come into play when we buy a car, with some surprising results. Its findings show that people say that the responsible ‘head’ factors such as reliability, value, safety, insurance premiums, fuel efficiency and shape are more important to them. However the research uncovered that a number of ‘heart’ factors are more important to people than they admit. These ‘heart’ factors were comfort, interior design, the manufacturer, colour, gadgets and speed. Rather than relying on verbal responses alone, the Hiscox study

also tested subconscious attitudes, since 90% of thought processes underlying decision-making happen unconsciously. The research reveals some fascinating contradictions. Although people said reliability, value for money and fuel efficiency were the most important to them, their subconscious thought was focusing on entirely different things – comfort, reliability and safety. If we let our hearts rule, we would base our decisions on these last three factors. Reliability was closest to male hearts, while women subconsciously preferred comfort. Dr David Lewis, author of The Brain Sell and MD at Mindlab, the research agency involved in this study, explained: “Even when making a costly purchase like a car, most of our buying decisions are unconscious. People believe they buy with logic and analysed thought but we can clearly see this isn’t so. If we bought solely on facts, we’d be dissatisfied, as we would be masking the real decision making process. “When questioned about their car

preferences people tend to provide socially acceptable answers and to remain silent about any responses they feel might put them in a bad light. In this study though, we used sophisticated techniques to discover subconscious feelings and emotions. We found age differences, regional differences and even gender differences – such as speed being an important factor to men at a subconscious level in the same way as design is to women.” Steve Morse, Head of Motor at Hiscox UK, commented: “Buying a car is a multi-sensory experience. Our study shows that we have an emotive response to cars; it is not just the way the car looks but how the engine sounds, the upholstery feels and smells, the way the steering wheel feels beneath the hands, as well as the subjective value of how we feel behind the wheel. Subconsciously, we let our hearts rule our heads and are going to be guided more by our emotional reaction than our rational response the next time we go to buy a car.”

VW Group announce half year stats This week the Volkswagen Group announced it’s half year growth and vehicle delivery statistics, citing nearly five million vehicles delivered in the first half of 2014. Overall the company delivered 4.97 million vehicles to customers across the globe in the period of January to June, claiming a 5.9% increase over the same period in 2013. The company also increased sales in June by 3.9% over last year with

859,400 vehicles being delivered in that month alone. Volkswagen Group board member Christian Klingler said: ‘The Volkswagen Group showed satisfactory development in the first half year even though market conditions were at times difficult. However, the economic environment on some world markets remains tense’ in a statement following the announcement.

According to the statistical break down, Western Europe accounted for just under two million of their world sales with the East Asia including China markets taking delivery of two million units with the rest of the world sales being spread almost evenly across North and South America, Eastern Europe and other smaller regional markets. Tigers Trek for points

WIN!

If you and a friend want to go see the Glasgow Tigers at Ashfield Stadium on July 27th facing off against Berwick Bandits answer this simple question:

Former Glasgow Tiger Joe Screen now manages which English side? Send your answer to us on a self addressed postcard marked “Tigers Comp” to:

West of Scotland Media, Suite 2/6 Brook St Studios, 60 Brook St, Glasgow G40 2AB Closing date 25/07/14

AGAINST ALL ODDS Ladies if you are reading this, you can rejoice, after a summer packed full of football you have your husbands and boyfriends back, but only for 3 weeks! The 9th of August sees the Scottish Premiership kick off, the following week it’s the English Premier League. Get your bets on just now for these to take advantage of the early prices.

Picture of Tigers skipper Theo Pijper, courtesy of Ian Adam

It will be a very busy week ahead for the Glasgow Tigers as they look to make a push up the Premier League table with three matches in four days as well as clocking up hundreds of motorway miles! The action should already have been underway this week, however the Tigers Monday night home clash against third placed Scunthorpe was washed out, no restaging date has yet be fixed. The team will travel on to Suffolk this Thursday night to face second placed Ipswich Witches, a team they dispatched from Ashfield with some ease last month, before then migrating further South to race, geographically the furthest away club in the UK, Plymouth Devils on Friday night.

Both these teams are strong around their respective home tracks which will mean that it will take their best performance of the season for the Tigers to secure any league points from either of these away meetings. The size of the challenge however won’t prevent the Glasgow team – now boosted by the return of Aussie star Christian Henry - from displaying spirited performances at both venues. Certainly the Glasgow side have the riders who are well capable of surprising their hosts, perhaps the tiny Plymouth track carded as the likelier venue to take something from. The team then travels back to Glasgow to face basement club Sheffield Tigers on Sunday in a meeting which the Scottish Tigers will be banking on as a home win. Sheffield are now team managed

by former Glasgow favourite Joe Screen – who only retired from riding speedway, as a Glasgow rider, last season - his presence and involvement will add some additional spice to Sunday’s event. The Yorkshire side are led by one of the league’s top men Simon Stead, and also track another former Glasgow rider Andre Compton who will make an Ashfield return against Glasgow. In other club news, Tigers supporters are set to welcome back their young French ace Dimitri Berge who will make a return to racing next Sunday (27th July) following recovery from injuries sustained in a crash at the end of April. Keep up to date with all Glasgow Speedway news on their website www.glasgowtigers.co

The Scottish Premiership is a one horse race again this year, so let’s take current Champions, Celtic, out the equation and look at some alternative markets. The price is not spectacular, but 13/8 for Aberdeen to win the league (w/o Celtic) will be money well spent. The, so called, best league in the world kicks off on the 16th of August. If you think Manchester United have any hope of regaining the title, then there are odds of 5/1, but whilst placing that bet, take the second star to the right and head straight on ‘til morning to Neverland, as this will never happen! Man City now have a full season under their belt with manager Manuel Pellegrini and City have strengthened wisely, this points to them lifting the title again this year, so take them at 2/1 . With Luis Suarez being sold to Barcelona, Liverpool have lost the bite in their attack, Ricky Lambert is not a like for like replacement, and will find it hard to fill those boots The 1st of August we have the Betfred mile at Glorious Goodwood. Homage, last out on the 29th June, was very eye-catching in winning a mile handicap at Windsor . Saddled by William Haggas, he is my selection for that race, odds of 10/1 (at ¼ the odds for 1st 4 place) are very generous. Selections: Aberdeen to win the Scottish Premiership (w/o Celtic) 13/8 - single Man City to win Premiership 2/1 – single Man City/Aberdeen 5/1 (approx) - Double By

Warriors announce record ticket sales over sales three seasons ago.

This week, the Glasgow Warriors announced that they have sold a record number of season tickets for the 2014/15 season, citing a 70% increase

So far, seven weeks out from the kickoff of the Guinness Pro12, 2,700 supporters of Scotland’s number one professional rugby team have bought season tickets, up by almost 400 from the same time last year. Over the course of the 13/14 Pro12 competition, the Warriors saw their average fan attendance across the season jump to 6,000, with a record crowd of 10,000 fans attending the breathtaking

play off at Scotstoun against Munster. According to the managers at Scotstoun, season ticket holders seats in the main stand are completely sold out with limited tickets available in the north stand and some standing tickets remaining in the east. Glasgow Warriors managing director Nathan Bombrys said: “The support that we enjoyed last season, particularly for the semi-final and final was outstanding and it’s fantastic to see so many supporters getting behind the

team already, by purchasing their season ticket memberships and guaranteeing their place at Scotstoun. We appreciate the tremendous growth in support behind the team and we’d like to thank our supporters for investing in the club, and Scottish Rugby for their continued funding, which enables us to go from strength to strength on and off the pitch. The new season will feature the very best teams in European rugby in Glasgow.

We are currently working with our partners at Scottish Rugby and Glasgow Life to finalise additional stands on the east and west ends of the stadium, to create capacity for additional season ticket members” The Warriors will be playing their first match since the end of the 13/14 Pro12 on the 23rd of August, facing of against the Harlequins in a friendly fixture, for tickets go to the Warriors website. Scotland continue to rise in FIFA rankings

World Cup Round-Up

Gordon Strachan’s resurgent Scotland celebrated this week as FIFA announced that they have risen to 27th in the world while England, thanks to their disastrous World Cup campaign fell to 20th.

Annnnnnnnd Breathe, Brazil you were wonderful hosts, wonderful weather and a quite wonderful World Cup. It has to be said that the best team won. Germany were the most consistent, played the best football, scored the most goals, deserved winners. Brazil 2014, certainly provided the world with a fantastic spectacle, shock exits (Portugal, Spain England, Italy) shock qualifiers (Costa Rica, Algeria, U.S.A). The predicted World Cup riots didn’t happen as Brazilians were happy to see their team play their way into the semi finals, until they were hammered 7-1 by eventual winners Germany. Germany vs Brazil in the semi final has now been considered the worst result in Brazil’s history and Felipe Scolari was sacked following their defeat to Netherlands in the battle to secure third place. This 2014 Brazilian World Cup saw the joint highest number of goals scored throughout the tournament ever(171). New heroes were made (James Rodriguez, Pogbo, Costa Rica, Chile, Columbia) The media found a new enemy (Luis Suarez aka Hannibal Lecter) Referees were very lenient during this World Cup, as a result of this Neymar was momentarily paralysed after a particularly harsh challenge from Columbia’s Juan Zuniga. Records were broke, Miroslav Klose is now the most prolific scorer in world cup history, overtaking the original Ronaldo as number one. Keylor Navas of Costa Rica and Tim Howard both broke records of their own Navas saving 21 of the 23 shots on target he faced. Tim Howard saved fifteen shots in the US’s defeat to Belgium. No other keeper has made more saves in the one game. The final consisted of Germany. the team who scored the most goals in the tournament against Argentina, the team who had conceded the least amount of goals. Germany were the first team to score seven goals in a semi final of the

World Cup. England were eliminated from the World Cup during the group stage for the first time since 1958. Spain’s shocking exit and four goal loss to Netherlands was the biggest loss suffered by a reigning champion at a World Cup. Heine Allemagne, aka the man who invented the World Cup dispersible spray, is set to become a millionaire after the success of his spray at the World Cup. The spray which keeps players ten yards away from the free kick, has been a complete success. Allemagne, was so poor growing up, he wasn’t able to go to school, instead he sold ice lollies on the street to help feed his family. Argentina and Brazil showed the world that its takes more than one player to win the biggest prize in international football, although Messi came pretty close to proving the doubters wrong. We also found out that Javier Mascherano will be avoiding any of the more fiery curries the next time he eats out, after tearing his anus in a last gasp challenge against Netherlands. Everybody still dislikes Sepp Blatter and everybody still knows Pitbull can’t sing. Ultimately, the one statistic everybody should remember..? Germany are the best team in international football. Gaaaaaaaame over. By

With the two teams set to play each other in a friendly in November Gordon Strachan’s men could have the chance to leapfrog their great rivals if they triumph later this year. Four days prior to the England game, Scotland will play against the Republic of Ireland at Celtic Park and if Scotland manage to defeat both teams could find themselves touching or possibly in the top twenty of the world. It’s a huge difference from when Craig Levein was in charge of Scotland, the team was regularly ranked 50th in world football. Scotland will go into the qualifiers

with an heir of confidence about them after Strachan proved to doubters that the Scotland squad has both skill and passion, Something that was severely lacking under the previous manager. Gordon Strachan’s men have world cup champions and current world number 1’s Germany, Republic of

Ireland, Georgia and Gibraltar in their qualifying group and if recent Scotland results have shown anything, Scotland will go into the qualifiers with no fear, but also have one of the best chances of qualifying from a group than they’ve had for years By

Kilmarnock announce signing of two new players

Kilmarnock have announced the signing of two players to help push them toward a top six finish this season. With the team having lost top scorer Kris Boyd to Rangers, Kilmarnock fans will be reassured by the news that they have signed ex Aberdeen player Josh Magennis and former England under 20 international Tope Obadeyi, both on three year contracts.

Kilmarnock manager Allan Johnston will be hoping that winger Tope Obadeyi will be able to rediscover the form that seen him appear for the under 20s England national side and score for the under 19s. Obadeyi began his career at Bolton but made only four substitutions and continued his career with a succession of loan moves. He spent the majority of last season on loan at Plymouth.

Former Aberdeen player Magennis was released by Aberdeen after playing 123 matches for the Pittodrie side. Appearing mostly from the bench Magennis can play in multiple positions and found the back of the net 12 times whilst appearing for the club. He finished last season on loan to St Mirren. By

Cameroonian athletes abscond from Aberdeen training camp This week two members of Cameroon’s Commonwealth Games team absconded from their Aberdeen training camp a week before the Games are due to begin. The pair who have so far not been named were last seen in the Hillhead Halls of Residence in Aberdeen were

reported missing on Tuesday night according to a statement released by Police Scotland who in the release said: ‘Police Scotland can confirm that two men have been reported as missing from the Aberdeen area. Both, one aged 31 and one aged 26, were reported missing from the Old Aberdeen area of Aberdeen just after midday on Tuesday. They were last seen at the Hillhead Halls of

Residence on Don Street, Aberdeen, at around 8.30pm on Sunday 13 July.’ Police Scotland have also released descriptions of the missing athletes describing one as being 5ft 8in wearing a black jumper and white trousers and the other being 5ft 4in with a prominent scar on his left cheek and last seen wearing a track suit. The athletes have followed a trend

which was set in London during the 2012 Olympics where seven Cameroonian athletes went missing during the event in order to claim asylum, it has been alleged by some sources that the two men who have went missing in Aberdeen may intend to do the same, however in conflicting reports, it has been said that there may have been tension between the Cameroonian athletes

and their governing body, similar to the situation for the Cameroon world cup squad who disputed their pay for taking part in the tournament. Police Scotland are urging anyone with information on the pairs whereabouts to contact them on the non emergency number 101. By
