terminally ill Shocking reports have come to light that East Ayrshire Council have been refusing terminally ill people for personal care in their final few dying days on earth.

Currently personal care is legally free to anyone aged over 65 who is deemed necessary, to be able to have a functioning place in society. The Scottish Government said that

terminally ill people no matter what their condition should be offered free care, according to the charity Motor Neurone Disease Scotland, East Ayrshire council refuse to abide by this. East Ayrshire Council said that while it had “every sympathy” for terminally

Council abandons terminally ill

East Ayrshire Council said that while it had “every sympathy” for terminally ill people requiring personal care, the council believe that charges should be based on specific care for individuals. With the average Motor Neurone Disease (MND) sufferer having less than fourteen months to live from diagnosis, the last thing they should have to worry about is finding finance to allow them t at least pass away with a form of dignity. East Ayrshire Council at the moment are failing to provide this. Before 2008 an MND sufferer would have been exempt from going through medical assessments and given the full financial benefit from the date of diagnosis however after Incapacity Benefit was replaced by Employment and Support Allowance, MND sufferers face the indignity of being assessed on the level of their terminal illness. Currently because of the Work Capability Means Test it means that even people with Motor Neuron Disease have to face the gauntlet

of a means test and risk having necessary funding cut from their financial allowance. East Ayrshire Council should be actively fighting these scandalous rulings and giving terminally ill people back their dignity before death.

The Bedroom Tax created by the Con Dem’s also dehumanises and discriminates against people with Motor Neurone Disease (well everybody but especially people with terminal illnesses). As the disease progresses, spouses of the partner suffering from the disease, find themselves having to sleep in separate beds, due to the specialised equipment needed to assist the afflicted in daily living. Several councils throughout Scotland (Western Isles and West Lothian) have no determined policy on when to charge or when to allow free care. The Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA) said that at no time should someone suffering from a terminal illness should be subjected to charges for care during their last days

on this mortal coil.

Councillor Peter Johnston COSLA’s health and well being spokesman said “Councils will work with their NHS partners at the local level to identify at what point a person is considered to be terminally ill, and this will vary from person to person and between different conditions.” A variety of councils (Argyll and Bute, Glasgow, Dundee, North Lanarkshire, Orkney and West Dunbartonshire) have the policy of at the doctors discretion when deciding the level of care needed for someone dealing with a terminal illness.”

Eddie Fraser director of Health and Social Care at East Ayrshire Council said “Whilst we have every sympathy for people with such a medical situation, we believe that East Ayrshire Council Charging Framework is being applied in a fair, equitable and consistent manner and is in line with the principles contained within the National Guidance for Non Residential Social Work Services.”

Police were called to the scene of the incident, which happened on Monday morning on the A78 Skermorlie between Ashcraig and Manor House, near Largs. It is believed that the woman became trapped in the car after the vehicle flipped onto its roof. The woman was taken to hospital. HGV training A new road safety project has been taking place in schools across East Ayrshire highlighting the dangers of HGV and larger vehicles to young people.

Nine primary schools were chosen to pilot this new project which is being delivered by the Ayrshire Roads Alliance’s Road Safety team and the Council’s Transport and Waste Management teams. The project highlights the dangers posed by larger vehicles to both pedestrians and cyclists, and the

children get hands on experience by working with one of the Council’s new recycling vehicles.

The children take part in fun activities working out the blind spot on large vehicles, guessing their stopping distance and even the affect that side wind can have on knocking a child off balance. Behind all the fun is a very serious

message which is enforced through a booklet issued to each child with reminders on how to stay safe.

Councillor Tom Cook, Spokesperson for Improving Community Safety was on hand at Kilmaurs Primary to witness the event in action. He said: “This project was introduced following a growing number of reports nationally of serious injuries

Council cut integral 20 year dementia service By

and fatalities through accidents involving vulnerable road users and Heavy Goods Vehicles.

“We believe that this initiative will help our children cope with the additional risks posed by such vehicles using East Ayrshire’s roads. “It is great to see the children enjoying themselves and, at the same time, learn important road safety messages in an

interesting and informative way. The success of this approach is evident to everyone and we hope to extend the programme to more schools next year.

“This programme is only made possible by the co-operation between Council departments and the Ayrshire Roads Alliance and it clearly demonstrates the benefits of partnership working.”

Couple rescued from house fire

Dementia patients and carers have been left distraught after South Ayrshire Council cut essential funding to a dementia charity celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year. South Ayrshire Dementia Support Association discovered their funding was to be cut as the council made essential efficiency savings following South Ayrshire Council’s review of their long-standing contract. The 20 year charity, which aim is to allow people suffering from the degenerative disease the opportunity to remain living in their home and also give support to families affected by dementia. The decision has caused outrage in the

local area, with Ayr woman Sharon Auld setting up an online petition, which has been signed by hundreds of people since its initiation, including Ayr MSP John Scott. Ms Auld said “We will be fighting this to the end as so many people in the community will be affected not just now but also in the future. These people didn’t ask for this to happen to them and I feel that everyone must stand together to see that they are supported after working all their days and that they remain dignified throughout every stage of their journey with dementia.” Currently there are almost 88,000 people with dementia in Scotland and it is projected that by 2031 there will be as many as 114,000, council’s

across Scotland should be looking at long term funding rather than finding ways to cut essential care for people who need it most. Kenny Leinster, South Ayrshire Council’s Head of Community Care and Housing explained the council’s decision “Our first and foremost concern is to ensure continuity of high quality care for our service users.” “To meet the wide range of needs our clients have and demonstrate best use of public money, we undertook, a tendering exercise in accordance with procurement regulations, which offers us an opportunity to establish a framework of suitable contractors to provide the highest possible level of care for our clients.”

A man and woman have been rescued from their home in Pagan Walk, Muirkirk, on Wednesday after a fire broke out in their kitchen.

They escaped the blaze from their two-storey house. The pair were given oxygen and were

found to suffer smoke inhalation but didn’t attend hospital. Group Manager Jim McNeil said: “Fire can happen to any of us but there are very simple steps we can all take that will make it less likely.

“It only takes a second for a fire to start.

New community hospital plans given go-ahead

THE WORLD’S

In an announcement from NHS Ayrshire & Arran last week, it was revealed that plans for a new 206 bed mental health and community hospital at the Ayrshire Central Hospital facility have been approved by Holyrood after the governments review of the Full Business Case (FBC) for the facility.

HAGGIS

BIGGEST Hall’s, keepers of one of Scotland’s oldest haggis recipes, is to stage a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS official attempt to create the largest haggis, to be displayed at this year’s Royal Highland Show.

2014 is the Official Year of the Haggis and Hall’s, who were taken over by family run Brown’s Food Group in 2013 and sponsor Biggar Rugby Club, has decided to attempt to achieve a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title. The governments approval of the FBC allows the team at NHS Ayrshire & Arran to finalize plans for construction, which will commence this summer, planning permission for the new development was approved at the end of May.

Mr John Scott, head of capital planning for Ayrshire in response to the approval said: ‘ This is great news. Approval for our FBC and planning approval are very important steps before construction can start. We are looking forward to getting started and being able to provide first-class

services in an outstanding building.’ If you’re interested in this latest development and how it will affect you, find out more at www.nhsaaa.net

MP seeks answers from Council over Millport Pier closure

The haggis will be unveiled on Thursday, June 19th at the annual celebration of Scottish farming, food and countryside. Players from Biggar Rugby Club got together on the pitch to help Hall’s attempt to kick the current GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title into touch. Set on May 23, 2009, the weight to beat is just over half a ton, with measurements of 7ft in length, 3ft in width, 1ft 9in in height and 6ft in circumference. Hall’s will make and cook their GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS attempt at their North Berwick premises before transporting the giant haggis in a bespoke truck through the streets of Edinburgh to the Ingliston showground. Once at the Royal Highland Show the haggis will be unveiled at 10am and the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS breaker will be revealed. Wayne Godfrey, CEO Browns

The recent announcement by North Ayrshire Council to close the pier in Millport came as a shock to many local residents. The closure will mean that the Waverley will not be visiting Cumbrae, and the mobile cinema may be lost as it used the pier for parking. Katy Clark, MP for North Ayrshire and Arran, has written to Elma Murray, the Chief Executive of North Ayrshire

Council, for more information in relation to this closure. Katy Clark said “I fully appreciate that safety is paramount in decisions such as this one to close Millport Pier. However, the announcement was sudden and unexpected, and many residents have expressed concern about the impact it will have on the island with the loss of the Waverley and cinema. I

have written to the Council to ask why the fault was not noticed until recently, and what steps are being taken to repair the pier. Perhaps most importantly I have also asked when this will be completed, as with summer approaching and Millport’s reliance on tourism, the loss of the Waverley could have a significant impact on the local economy.”

Food Group, which owns Hall’s, said: “We are very excited about this ambitious GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS attempt. Hall’s is a Scottish company that has been around for generations and so we naturally want to do Scotland proud – by making history and setting the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title a nation can be part of as once the haggis is unveiled and addressed individual portions will be on sale. “Proceeds will go towards Macmillan Cancer Care as well as selected Scottish children’s charities meaning the legacy of the haggis will live on through donations with long lasting benefits in local communities.” To be part of the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS record attempt, buy tickets online for the Royal Highland Show at https:// highlandshow.ticketsrv.co.uk/ and make your way to 7th Avenue for the arrival of the haggis at 10am on Thursday, June 19. Established in 1932, Hall’s use great Scottish recipes and finest quality ingredients to make a range of products which include haggis, sausages, lorne sausages, black pudding and breakfast packs. Tourists continue to visit cave of Sawney Bean

The cave of cannibal Sawney Bean remains to be a popular tourist attraction, as people are still debating whether the tale is fact or fiction. So who is Sawney Bean? By

If you don’t know the story already, it’s been said that Sawney Bean left home young and with his partner, set up home in a cave, set on the Ayrshire coast. It’s believed that they were there for 25 years, where they lived with their eight sons, six daughters, 18 grandsons and 14 granddaughters – all from incest. It’s rumoured that the family had killed and eaten up to 1000 people. The couple would rob people passing by the cave, murder them and then push them out to sea. They then came up with the idea of using the bodies to provide food and that’s when the cannibalism began...

The grisly tale is certainly a popular one, with the character of Sawney Bean in the Edinburgh Dungeons. A modern-day version of story has also been made into a movie, directed by Scot, Ricky Wood Jnr. Sawney – Flesh of Man stars Scots actor David Hayman as Sawney. Ricky, from Aberdeen, said: “It is surprising how many people across the world have heard about him and want to know more about him.” “My father is an amazing storyteller – and wrote the script for our film – so you can imagine the way he told the story and he always told me it was true for effect. “I know there is a lot of doubt about when this character lived, if he ever

Kaitlin McManus

lived or whether the story was simply some sort of gruesome propaganda tale... But cannibalism was something that did happen in that age when many people were starving, so I don’t think the legend of Sawney Bean is totally made up. “There are so many international fairytales that aren’t anywhere near as well known as the story of Sawney Bean, which again I think adds to the idea that it must stem from some truth. “I was never scared by the story – I always just wanted to know more about how they lived and how they could have survived doing what they did for so long. It is such a great, chilling story and I think it will always continue to interest us.”

Warning for tourists -

beware of motorway thefts

Isis insurgents march on Iraq’s main refinery Islamic extremist militants Isis have attacked Iraq’s largest oil refinery over the course of Tuesday night and Wednesday, the outcome of the conflict at the facility is still unclear.

British tourists have been advised to be careful when driving in Barcelona, as they could be targeted by highway thieves. With more than 11 million Brits travelling to Spain last year, it is a favourite among holidaymakers. The AA have revealed that more than 120 drivers from Britain have been victims of robbery whilst driving on the AP-7 motorway in Barcelona. Thieves have been waving cars to stop and distracting them, usually making the tourists believe there is with something wrong with either their car or the tourists and asking them to get out the car to look at it. While the brits are distracted, one of the thieves will steal possessions out their car. Rosie

Sanderson,

of

the

AA’s

international division, encourages tourists to stop at a safe place is someone tries to flag them down. She said: “If you travel at a slow speed, just make sure you’ve got people around you before you stop.” It appears that thieves target hire cars or cars with a GB licence plate. A Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) spokesman said: “It is the beginning of the peak summer season, when many thousands of Britons will be driving foreign-registered or hired vehicles across Spain. “Distraction techniques can be very effective with honest people who think they are being helped by a good Samaritan - when in fact these criminals are the opposite. “We want people to be aware, wary and not be caught out.” By

Suicide bomb attack on Nigerian World Cup Screening

On Tuesday night, an outdoor screening of the World Cup in the Nigerian city of Damaturu was attacked by a suicide bomber, who detonated a tricycle taxi packed with explosives next to the venue. According to reports several people were killed and scores were injured in the blast. The attack was carried out by the radical Islamic group Boko Haram, who have achieved notoriety recently by kidnapping over 200 school girls in the north of the country. This is not the attack of its kind in

Nigeria, Boko Haram have during past sporting events attacked venues where people congregate to watch the games. Rescue efforts are currently ongoing, with emergency services being hampered by the fear of further blasts as one of Boko Harams preffered tactics is to time secondary explosive devices to detonate, killing those who have arrived to assist the victims. The Baiji oil refinery is the largest in Iraq, with 100% of it’s output for domestic use, if the the Isis militants succeed in capturing it will cause much of the country to grind to a halt as fuel shortages and power cuts hit. The tactic of capturing refinery facilities has worked well for Isis in recent months as it’s funding has swelled due to their control of oil fields and refineries in Syria. Isis militants are also threatening to march on the nations capital Baghdad, from their new base of operations 40 miles north in the city of Baquba. The Iranian president has pledged the support of the Iranian people but does not foresee the presence of Iranian troops on Iraqi soil in any significant numbers. On Wednesday evening, Iraq’s beleagured president Nouri al-Maliki, formally requested that the US

government, which has dispatched the aircraft carrier USS HW Bush and two support vessels to the Iranian gulf, for direct assistance against the Isis militants in the form of air strikes. The Iraqi crisis which has developed at a break neck speed, has been spurred by a number of factors, the most significant of which is sectarian tensions between the minority Sunni community and the

Ukrainian president unveils peace plan President Petro Poroshenko has unveiled a plan for a unilateral ceasefire by Urkrainian forces in the splintered eastern regions of the country, where they have been combating armed pro-Russian separatists for the past two months.

Porochenko hopes to secure the support Russia’s president Vladimir Putin with the new plan, after a week of tense negotiations between the two nations. Poroshenko spoke at a military academy in Kiev outlining this latest plan to solve the problems in the east of the country saying: ‘The plan will begin with my order for a unilateral ceasefire. I can say that the period of

the ceasefire will be rather short. We anticipate that immediately after this the disarming of the illegal military formations will take place.’ It has been reported that Poroschenko spoke to Putin late on Tuesday, where the possibility of a ceasefire was discussed. The Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, has said that the ceasefire should in fact be permanent also saying: ‘the step President Poroshenko has promised and which in general we were all waiting for’. However, despite Kiev’s decision to call a ceasefire, it’s unclear how the separatists will react to the offer of a ceasefire as many have controlled

majority Shiites. The Sunni community is accusing the Shia majority of monopolising power in the country, leading to popular support for the Sunni Isis militants amongst Sunni communities with a large number of Iraqi Sunni’s joining the militants during their blitzkrieg of Iraq. By

government buildings for the past number of weeks and declared quasi independent states. There is an assumption that if the separatists in the eastern regions do not disarm and disperse by the end of the ceasefire, Ukrainian military forces will conduct a final assault on the remaining pockets of resistance. This latest bid to appease Moscow follows the cancellation of gas supplies to Ukraine by Gazprom, the Russian state owned energy giant, after a dispute over an outstanding gas bill and increased costs to Ukraine was left unresolved. Big Brother defends its right to mass surveillance of British public

NATIONAL NEWS ROUNDUP

Prime Minister urged to help innocent man jailed in UAE A charity has asked David Cameron to help a student who has been jailed in the United Arab Emirates for cocaine possession worth less than £5. Ahmad Zeidan, 21, from Reading denies the drugs were his and said he was tortured and forced to confess. He said the document was in Arabic and didn’t understand it.

This week, Whitehall’s top security official and director of the Office for Security and Counter-Terrorism, Charles Farr, confirmed for the first time that the government is practising mass, indiscriminate surveillance of social networking, email and phone calls both within the UK and outside it’s borders. Farr justified the legality of the governments surveillance program which indiscriminately violates the privacy of innocent people and suspects alike on a massive scale by the security services, saying that such communications are deemed to be ‘external communications’ under current legislation. Under the current legislation, the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA) which has been called ‘outdated’ by critics, so called external communications are not protected by law and as such do not require the issuing of a warrant in order to give the security services the right to intercept them. Farr’s defence of the practice is detailed in a 48 page document that was released on Tuesday of this week by Farr. In the document Farr develops a legal interpretation of the current RIPA legislation which allows the government to side step the need for traditional privacy safe guards. The document penned by Farr was released in defence against a case brought before the Investigatory Powers Tribunal, by anti surveillance group Privacy International, Amnesty International and a number of other civil rights groups. The bulk of the cases against the government relating to GCHQ (Government Communications Head Quarters) have been brought to bear since Edward Snowden released what have been dubbed ‘The Snowden Files’ which detailed how the US

and UK governments had conspired to carry out mass surveillance on communication networks worldwide. Theresa May has waded into the debate, acknowledging that the government has failed to bring the public round to the case for mass surveillance in a bid to assuage national security threats. The home secretary also admitted that the question of individual privacy has ‘became a much more salient question that a year ago’ going on to attempt to justify the mass harvesting of personal information saying: ‘There is a need to get out there more generally the importance of intelligence in fighting all of these national security threats. We will try to find innovative ways of getting the importance of these activities to members of the public. People talk about national security versus civil liberties, but you can only enjoy your liberty if you have security’

Zeidan claims he was beaten and threatened with rape. He was studying at Emirates Aviation College in Dubai. He has been sentenced to nine years in jail. He was arrested in December after 0.04g of cocaine, valued at about £3, was found in a bag in a glove compartment of a car he was in with men he claimed he didn’t know well. Charity, Reprieve, wrote to the Prime Minister, asking for his support. Speaking from prison, Zeidan said: “They arrested me, took off the gold

chain I was wearing, they tied it around their fist and started hitting me with it,” “They kept me in a solitary cell for eight days. They would repeatedly just randomly come in the cell and beat me.” Maya Foa, head of the Reprieve death penalty team, called the Zeidan’s conviction a “scandal” in the letter. The letter said: “We note with concern

Theresa May apologises over passport delays

The home secretary has also suggested that her controversial ‘Snooper Bill’ which allows the police and security services to breach civil liberties with impunity by allowing them to track mobile phone and internet usage should be revived. The communications and search giant Google has attempted to instil a sense of confidence in its users privacy, through offering ‘end to end’ encryption to anyone using Gmail that signs up for the service in an attempt to prevent government’s and other parties from accessing the content of your inbox and sent mail. The encryption service remains in its beta stages but aims to be released to the mass market as an extension in the near future. Despite Google’s efforts to fight invasions of online privacy, many are sceptical that the web giant will be able to stay one step ahead of GCHQ and it’s American counterpart the NSA. As the case against the government develops more updates will be provided. By

that the prosecution has appealed the case and are once again seeking to increase the penalty Mr Zeidan will ultimately receive.” Foa said: “Ahmad has been through a terrifying ordeal,” “The prime minister must intervene as soon as possible to secure justice for him before it’s too late.” By

Toddler dies in house fire a year after brother’s cot death A three year old girl has died after a fire tore through her home in Carmarthen, Wales last weekend. The tragedy happened a year after her brother died. Events surrounding the death are being looked into, as it took 40 minutes for an ambulance to arrive, but Police officers had already taken the girl to hospital. Angel and her mother were rescued by firefighter and her father escaped by jumping out a window.

Home Secretary Theresa May has apologised over the delayed passport applications and insists that the government is doing everything it can to deal with the situation. She stated in a commons debate that there has been an unusually high demand for passports, and the passport office was dealing with the highest demand in 12 years. She said: “I would like to say to anybody who is unable to travel because of a delay in processing their passport application that I am sorry and the government is sorry for the inconvenience they have suffered and

we are doing all we can to put things right.” “What we don’t know at the moment is what an urgent need to travel will mean and whether everybody who’s got holidays coming up will now be guaranteed that they’ll get their passports in time, which is what we want, or whether you’ve got to prove something additional. “We know there are still a lot of people having an awful lot of problems.” She also said that despite delays, the majority of applicants are still receiving their passports within three weeks as usual. By

Eva Gomez

Family friend Lisa Naether said: “We were in total shock when we heard, especially as it was the anniversary of her baby brother’s death.” Angel was taken to the town’s Glangwili Hospital by police but was later transferred to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff where she died. Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire MP Simon Hart was one of many who spent more than 20 minutes attempting to revive Angel while they waited for an ambulance to arrive. An ambulance service spokeswoman said: “We are aware of this tragic incident and are currently looking into the details surrounding it.” By

Clairvoyant, Columnist & Author Joan Charles

I am delighted to be delivering your stars although; I won’t be doing them in the traditional way, as I am not an astrologer. For many years I have provided the stars using Tarot cards and that is what I will be doing here so, I guess in a sense they should be called, Taroscopes. Anyway, I do hope you enjoy what the cards have to say.

Aries If your looking for a romance to blossom this could be the time that’s right for you to make a move and get it going – if however you are searching for a true love then look out for a chance meeting.

Taurus Surprise news comes from someone quite unexpectedly and there is a connection to the past with this also. I feel you may be looking at things from a black and white; you might need to widen your horizons to see the bigger picture.

Summer Time Readings Courses:

Introduction to the Tarot– The Law of Attraction and Psychic Development courses are on-going, so, check for dates and details.

Readings:

Tarot, Angel, Spiritual, Chakra and Tarumenology [a combination of tarot and numerology]

For details of any of the above contact Joan on mobile: 07930 697 229 or email: joan.charles@btopenworld.com

Gemini At this moment in time you could be feeling that not much is going your way however put a little faith into things changing and it could make all the difference. Burning the candle at both ends will drain your energy and stop you from seeing what is right in front of you.

Cancer It feels as if you are in the middle of the bridge half way to your new destination and leaving the past behind. Things that are worth waiting for take time and so, allow this to take shape in its own good time.

Leo Challenges and limitations are not helping you to make the moves you wanted and this could cause you some frustrations in the mean time. Try to divert your focus onto something that’s a bit more positive.

Virgo Time for reflection is not time lost; this gives you the thinking time you need to see what it is you really want and then to make a plan and go get it. Take yourself off to the movies or do something that will bring a little laughter into your life.

Libra Even though you are generous and are there when you need to be for others it may not always be reciprocated, not that you do it for that reason but when you need others I sense you feel they are other wise engaged.

Scorpio You will need to stand your ground on a matter, which concerns a male and someone who seems to think they can just step in, and dictate to you. I’m sensing the worm has turned and that you are now in the driving seat.

Competition Win a Tarot Reading with Joan Charles We will be running this competition across all of our papers for the month of June so if you want to be in with a chance of winning here is what you need to do.

Sagittarius New lines of communication are open and you will be make the most of them in order to sort a situation out that has been plaguing you for some time. I sense better times ahead all round so keep it up.

Capricorn On one hand I sense that you are not in high spirits and then on the other I see good news coming your way. I am seeing a key and for me this is about discovering something that helps you and also a possible house move too.

Aquarius Better have a nice bottle of something on chill as I’m feeling you are about to enter a new phase in life and one that will challenge you in a whole different way. This is a positive time but one that requires focus.

Pisces As they say, the truth will out and what this means is you are about to uncover something that will provide you with the answers to certain things you have been uncertain about. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

Motivate & Inspire

Know your

Ten years ago, in 2004, I had been giving some motivational talks, and I met a fellow inspirational speaker for coffee, and he said “Wouldn’t it be great to inspire 10,000 people at once?”

Green Deal The “Green Deal “ is a UK Government initiative designed to help meet the up - front costs of making homes more efficient. As a ‘Green Deal Adviser’ (GDA) I can offer energy saving advice and help to arrange installation of the following.

• Energy efficient boilers with advanced heating controls. • Loft Insulation including top ups. • Cavity wall insulation • Under floor insulation • Low energy lighting • External wall insulation • Solar PV

What is a Green Deal Assessment? In order to get the best advice on how to improve the energy efficiency of your home and save money on your utility bills I create a Green Deal Advice Report (GDAR) however, in order to do this a visit to your property needs to be arranged to complete the two surveys during the Green Deal Assessment. One is known as an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) as well as an Occupancy Assessment (OA). The GDAR uses advanced software to produce recommendations on how you can save money by installing the correct products. Most of the new Government grants, finance and other incentives require you to have a GDAR completed before you apply but this is simple and help with the paperwork will be available to you!

What is an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate)? Domestic appliances have been carrying energy ratings for years those colourful banded charts that

rate energy efficiency from A to G, with A being the most efficient. All new homes and homes being sold or let must now be assessed to find out how efficient they are. A second chart shows your homes environmental impact in terms of its carbon emissions. The EPC will contain a report of what you can do to reduce your homes energy use and carbon emissions, and a “potential” rating to show what rating it could be if the recommendations of improvements were carried out. The report also shows potential costs with and without improvements being carried out.

As a Green Deal Advisor (GDA) I would be looking at what insulation the home has as well as the heating system, hot water system, radiators, windows, ventilation, light bulbs and if renewable are present.

Government approved software is used on a to generate appropriate recommendations and produce your unique GDAR in your home. Depending on what products are recommended You can be advised on the range of funding and finance options that are available to cover the up front costs of the energy saving measures. The Government has asked that Green Deal Advisors follow a strict code of conduct to produce accurate and impartial Green Deal Advice Reports. That means we work with only Green Deal Approved Installers and Green Deal Providers. To receive the full funding available you must use approved providers and installers who meet the “Green Deal” standard. I am an expert in transforming poorly rated homes, which cost a lot of money to heat into a high rated super, efficient home.

This assessment will take into account the age and size of the property as well as the position.

If you are interested in future proofing your home as well as lowering your utility bills

After the EPC has been carried out and calculated an Occupancy Assessment (OA) is done and this is designed to show homeowners how they can improve the energy efficiency of the home, which will then reduce the bills. This information will be unique to each homeowner.

I am happy to offer a free “Green Deal” assessment worth £150 to all readers*.

How can I access Green Deal Finance or Grants?

For more details please call Gemma Collins on 07790 031010

The first step would be to arrange a convenient time to survey the property, which takes approximately 1 - 2 hours depending on the size of your home. To make the assessment as accurate as possible you will need to have copies of your utility ready so that you I can be shown just you how much you could save.

I look forward to showing you how to save money, add value to your home and improve your overall comfort of your home.

*All properties will have a pre-assessment before a Green Deal Assessment is deemed appropriate. Flats are excluded and this offer can be withdrawn at anytime.

And instead of leaning over, patting him on the back, and wishing him luck, I enthusiastically threw my arms in the air and yelled, “Let’s Do it!” That one decision changed my life!

And so I hired the only conference centre in Scotland that could host 10,000 people, The Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) armadillo in Glasgow.

The admin staff at the SECC were quite incredulous and asked if I was sure that I wanted to do that as even Kylie Minogue only hired their 3,000 seater venue. I grinned (forever optimistic) and proclaimed that I wanted to Go Large!

So I signed a six-figure rental agreement, and I committed to renting the whole venue including breakout rooms, for three days. I had MASSIVE plans, and I effectively created three events including evening Ceilidh function with our guest speakers. I meticulously planned this event and it became my 24 hour obsession, and I chose to all-but shut down my successful financial advisory business, believing that all of my clients knew where I was and how to contact me, and trusting that they would call me if they needed me... WRONG!

That experience proved to me; that if you want to succeed, you’ve got to be Proactive, not Reactive. “Successful people keep moving!”

It was only then that it occurred to me that I did not know 10,000 people, so how was I going to fill 10,000 seats? My answer was “leverage”, and I decided that the most effective leverage would be the Internet.

So to cut a long story short; I DID make the event happen. Despite my friend disappearing off the radar & leaving it all up to me to bring to fruition, I brought in amazing speakers including the currently very popular “JuiceMaster” Jason Vale, and Sir Bob Geldof heard about it and also wanted to get involved.

On the day, I had a fantastic team of (volunteer) experts running the show, and despite three feet of unexpected snow, the attendees enjoyed a mindblowing, and life-changing weekend. Financially I messed up massively and the whole project financially devastated me, and took me to the edge literally. I ended up having to sell my house, my lovely car. I lost my girlfriend, my assets and all of my substantial savings, and I very nearly pulled the plug on life itself, believing that people would understand. Well they say “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade”

My mother helped me out by purchasing a campervan for me... and unfortunately within 300 miles, the engine blew up, and another nine months and £5000 more expense later, we ended up having a brand-new engine fitted to my 20 year old van.

And so with nothing left to lose, I began my next adventure. Touring 21 countries in my campervan with my dog. I took over 250,000 photos and enjoyed the experience of a lifetime that many people dream about, but few have the courage to go out there and make into a reality. One of the biggest drivers for me wanting to host the Inspire Scotland events in 2006 was to highlight one of my own observations. I had observed that most of the statues that stand silently proud in our city centres are approximately 100 to 200 years old. Most of us go about our business, blissfully ignorant of who these people were, or why they are being honoured. And what of today? Who would we honour today with a statue?

What occurred to me, was that the Brits in general, and Scots in particular, were responsible for so many of the changes in society and luxuries that today we take for granted;

Penicillin, Radar, TV, Radio, WellyBoots, Road-Surfacing (Tar Macadam), and even in the world’s first Billionaire was a Scotsman! (Andrew Carnegie). So what has happened in the 100+ years since all those statues were erected? Where are our outstanding pioneers of today?

Actually I believe that we have a phenomenon amount of talent here in Scotland, but we have been so indoctrinated by our leaders, carers, guardians, teachers and parents to stay humble and not show off. This Calvinistic trait has now been taken too far in my opinion, and whilst a touch of humility is a nice trait to witness, the net result of dampening a person’s selfconfidence is actually devastating!

In my experience, we have so much talent and innovation here in Scotland compared to most other countries in the world, that I believe we have the right to be shouting about it from the rooftops, and enjoying our God-given right to the massive Abundance that is the natural flow of positive energy all around us. So praise your children and Grandchildren, become aware of the effect of the words you use, and focus on raising the self-confidence and self-worth of everyone you communicate with.

We all have smiles and positive vibrations that we can tap into any time we want, regardless of what else is going on in our world. Just like smiling; you can share the positivity with everyone you see, and instead of worrying that you’ll run out of smiles, you’ll find that the Law of Attraction rewards you with even more reasons to smile, and oodles of smiles, abundance and positivity to share with the world. Smile & make your world a better place... It starts with you! Mike Berry www.AbundanceByChoice.com/111

PETS The Scottish SPCA’s Ayrshire and South West Scotland Animal Rescue and Re-homing centre is hoping kind residents will be willing to offer a rescue pets a second chance at happiness. Here are four adorable guys looking to find forever homes

Name: Max Age: 5 years Gender: Male Breed: Crossbreed

Max is a lovely little dog who arrived with us through no fault of his own. He’s a lively wee terrier looking for an owner with knowledge of his breed who can give him the training and love he deserves. Max is a friendly boy who has had some basic training but he needs help learning how to walk on his lead as he gets very excited when he goes out. Max does not care for cats or small animals but he could possibly be rehomed with another canine companion following a successful introduction at the centre.

Name: Kiki Age: 5 years Gender: Female Breed: Domestic Short Hair

Kiki came in as a heavily pregnant stray and now that her kittens have been re-homed, she is looking for a forever home for herself. She is very friendly and loves to be petted, especially if she knows you will be bringing her food.

If you’re interested in re-homing any of these animals, you can download and complete a pre-homing questionnaire on the Scottish SPCA website and bring it with you when visiting our Ayrshire Rescue and Re-homing Centre. The centre is open from 10am - 4pm seven days a week.

Kiki would be well suited for most homes, although she does not like dogs so could not be re-homed with one. Another cat in the house may be okay if they were introduced successfully.

Name: Freddie Age: Unknown Gender: Male Breed: Ferret

Freddie is a cheeky boy who is looking for an experienced owner. He is a typical lively ferret but he has not been handled very much so needs an owner that is confident enough to work with him on this. Ferrets are sociable animals so Freddie will need a new home where he will get lots of attention from his new family or will be introduced to other ferrets for company. They are also very good escape artists and therefore any potential new owner would have to have a secure hutch and run.

Name: Dexter Age: Unknown Gender: Male Breed: Rat

Matt is a lovely lad who arrived in our Dexter was found straying in a garden before arriving in our care. He is quite scared of people most of the time and does not seem to have been handled much. Most small animals do come round to being picked up with daily handling and this is something any potential new owner will need to be prepared for. Rats are very intelligent little animals and they can also become quite attached to their owners. Dexter would be best suited to an owner who has owned rats before.

The Queens Baton on its final leg The Queens Baton relay has reached its final leg after travelling a mammoth 190,000kms and visiting all 70 nations and territories of the Commonwealth. The Baton began it’s journey at Stirling University, seat of the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland and befitting the Baton’s purpose, the Scottish Institute for Sport. From there it left Scotland for New Dehli, site of the 2010 Commonwealth Games and where the Queens Baton would officially begin it’s international journey. Last Sunday after the Baton travelled across the globe, it finally arrived back in Scotland, greeted in Edinburgh with fanfare and celebration.

n a move which seems to be aligning the long-running sports quiz with the more light-hearted, younger Skybased upstart A League of Their Own, this spin-off series A Question of Sport: Super Saturday (Saturday, BBC1, 6.50pm), shown to tie in with the World Cup, homes in more on the comedic elements of the show – as well as featuring some physical challenges, too.To ensure the laughs remain dialled-up throughout, stand-up comedian Jason Manford takes over presenting duties from Sue Barker (sorry Sue – we still think you’re funny though!), and we’re promised the guests will be a touch more celebrity-oriented

rather than purely focusing on sports stars. Don’t worry, though – if you’re starting to think it’s all too unfamiliar and you won’t recognise the show you love, one thing remains unchanged, and that’s the team captains: Matt Dawson and Phil Tufnell are still on hand to trade their veiled barbs in the spirit of true sporting competitiveness. Joining them this week are two dancers and two comedians: Strictly’s Ola Jordan and Pineapple Dance Studio stalwart Louie Spence represent the fleet-of-feet, while Shappi Khorsandi and Chris Ramsey are the masters of mirth in question.Alongside the more traditional sporting content are a few more outlandish activities,

including this week Matt and Phil taking a hair-raising ride on the fastest zipwire in Europe. But what’s all this got to do with the World Cup, we hear you say? Well, it’s a wee bit tenuous we’ll admit, but at a time when the more casual of sports fans are being tempted towards the beautiful game by the events in Brazil, it seems only fair that the less serious sports trivia enthusiasts might also be catered for by the Beeb’s flagship quiz series. Indeed, we can only imagine Jason will prove a draw for many people. He says of his

appointment, “I am made up to be hosting this brilliant BBC One Saturday night show. I have always been a massive fan and it’s a real honour! “Families will be able join in at home with the rounds they know and love. And they will be in for a treat, with bigger and better challenges with the country’s favourite quiz captains Matt Dawson and Phil Tufnell. “With the World Cup looming this summer, I’m hoping the UK will be hit by sporting mania and as football is one of my obsessions I’m hoping to see some legendary footballing names joining us too.” He may well get his wish, as there’s plenty of time left in the five-part series for him to meet his idols.

John Inverdale Today at Wimbledon BBC2, 8pm John Inverdale introduces highlights of the opening day’s play at the All England Club. Smart Girls Guide to... Reducing Waste

With Scotland throwing away 566,000 tonnes of waste from our homes every year, we chuck out more than a third of the food we buy. Leftovers don’t need to be boring, and spending less money on your boring supermarket shop means you can spend a bit more on some luxuries at the weekend... like wine or chocolates! And let’s face it, I bet they won’t go to waste!

Get the best out of your fruit & veg

Where we store our fruit and vegetables makes

a big difference on how long they will last. Keep fruit and vegetables in the drawers at the bottom (in their original packaging or a loosely tied bag) - the exceptions are onions, potatoes, bananas and whole pineapple should be left out the fridge, in a cool, dry place.

Bulk up your leftovers

If you have some pasta or stew left over that isn’t enough for the next day, don’t throw it away! Adding chickpeas, pulses, kidney beans will bulk it up. Serve with some bread and you have a yummy, filling meal. If you have plain couscous left over, use next day mixed with

chopped cucumber, tomatoes and herbs for a cheap lunch at work.

Freeze it!

A common reason for throwing something away is because it is past its expiry date or gone mouldy or stale. If you buy in bulk or don’t have many people in your household, freeze food and bring it out when you need it. Bread can be frozen and left out the night before, or toasted straight from frozen. Grated cheese can also be used straight from the freezer. Frozen vegetables are great too, because you only need to use what you need!

Five step mortgage decision Getting a foot on the first rung of the property ladder can seem an uphill struggle. But if you are finding saving a deposit or getting a mortgage difficult, there are places you can go to for help, whatever age you are.

1

Make sure you can afford the monthly repayments...All first time buyers will be aware that it makes more than bricks and mortar to be able to have a healthy home. Do you really want to be living in abject poverty, or live as a complete recluse because of serious financial shortfalls. Budget beforehand, that way you can work out what you can realistically afford.

2

The application process. Yes the dreaded application process. Where hopes come to die. Lenders must check you can afford the mortgage, they must also test how stable your finances are if interest rates change or your circumstances change(job loss, illness etc)

3

Saving for a deposit e.g. The road to the promised land. At the

current time you need to save in the region of 5% percent of the total price of the house you are looking to buy. At the moment the Government also have a Help To Buy Scheme in which they help prospective buyers by providing them with up to 20% percent toward the rest of their mortgage, allowing them a better chance of getting them on to the property market.

4

Finding the mortgage that’s right for you (Or also known as avoiding the manic eyed mortgage advisor who’s about sell you into a life of slavery not witnessed since Egyptian times). First of all there are many type of mortgages, it doesn’t have to be difficult, ask advice (like it or not, parents are usually helpful) things like knowing whether you want fixed monthly rates, variable rates etc. It’s the biggest decision of your life, best not go into it blindfolded

5

Finding a guarantor for your mortgage. Probably best not asking your mate, crazy Al, y’no the one that crashed your car and still smashes street-lights when he gets out of his anger management meetings. Parents, guardians or close relatives

MA S DIS SIVE CO SU UN MM TS! ER

are usually the best bet, its a legally binding contract and your guarantor literally needs to be able to pay your mortgage if you cant. If you can survive these five terrifying pitfalls, and still choose the mortgage life then, there are no more dangers (well apart from, children)

Here’s a handy list of things for stressful consideration in buying a home(and to assist in the premature greying/balding of your hair).

• Mortgage arrangements and valuation fees • Stamp Duty

• Solicitors fees

• Removal costs • Survey costs

• Initial furnishing and decorating costs • Building insurance

PROPERTY Landlords manipulating tenants with Commonwealth Games subterfuge

Organisers of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow have reacted in fury after realising people advertising their properties on Gumtree were using the Commonwealth Games symbol to entice prospective buyers. The reason for the draconian measures is to stop any rogue marketing attempts at benefiting unscrupulously through affiliation with Glasgow’s sporting and athletic show-piece. The ban on using the name is to ensure that the rights of the commercial sponsors are maintained and to prevent ambush marketing in the run up to the Games. Luke Todd head of customer operations at Gumtree said “we are committed to protecting buyers and sellers who use our site, and any adverts which infringed upon

intellectual property or trademark rights were not permitted.” Commercial rights and marketing rights are worth millions to sponsors in what as seen as a very prestigious sporting event, alongside this years World Cup in Brazil. It is imperative for organisers to affirm that the level of marketing and commercial rights seen throughout the game will not be diluted by people cashing in and damaging the Commonwealth Games legacy. A spokesperson for Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games said “Glasgow 2014 has a responsibility to ensure that unauthorised and fraudulent adverts are not perceived as having any official association with the Games and will only act in cases where we feel there may be confusion, or a danger of customers being misled.”

M can you keep the noise down please.

The chairman if boutique hotel Citizen M has admitted to overlooking one major cog in the his well oiled chain of hotels. People in Glasgow would prefer to stay up all night and party. Much to the chagrin of the quieter less inebriated hotel guests. Rattan Chadha chairman of the citizenM hotel chain admitted that after the success of opening two hotels in Amsterdam and deciding to open a premises in Glasgow, they couldn’t have been happier with the immediate and ongoing popularity of their Glasgow citizenM premises. However there was one difference between the Amsterdam and Glasgow hotel. Glasgow doesn’t sleep. Chadha spoke of why they chose Glasgow to set up shop said “London

prices were sky high, so when we found a prime place in downtown, we said “its not ideal but lets try. It’s the number one hotel in Glasgow, but it doesn’t attract our target customers.”

Chadha said “Most people come from England or other parts of Scotland and like to drink. When the bars close, they bring the party to the hotel. That’s not what we intended.”

CitizenM has branches in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Glasgow, London, New York and Paris and yet Glasgow has been the most troublesome, last year whilst the Stone Roses were playing in Glasgow, the hotel had one of its busiest weekends, with the fire brigade, ambulance and police all being called upon at various times during the night.

After opening in 2010 CitizenM has became the go to hotel for young international travellers and is the third highest ranked hotel in Glasgow on Tripadvisor, with guests expressing delight in the décor and the attitude of staff.

He added “Every busy evening, we have someone falling down the stairs.”

Billy Connolly sells beloved Highland mansion

Billy Connolly has sold his beloved Scottish mansion and estate for nearly £3million pounds. Don’t feel too sorry for the Big Yin though he made a tidy profit of nearly £2.5 million pounds after purchasing it for £590,000 pounds in 1998.

Connolly and his wife Pamela are basing more and more of their time in New York, however they are rumoured to have kept a cottage in the grounds of the 14 acre expanse of land. Locals will be sad to see Billy go as he serves up drams to the Men of the Lonach who march through the glen to the Lonach Highland Gathering and Games.

Candacraig House was built in the 17th century and features 12 bedrooms in the mansion.

Connolly has spoken of his battle with prostate cancer and being diagnosed with Parkinson’s although it is unsure whether this has affected his decision to sell up. The mansion has seen showbiz pals such as Robin Williams and Steve Martin visit and sample the highland hospitality and previously was owned by Bodyshop founder Anita Roddick.

Jennifer Stewart secretary of the Lonach Highland and Friendly Society, said “He will continue to be a supporter as he is an honorary member of the Lonach Society. “He will continue to provide a trophy for the piping competition so nothing’s going to change from our point of view. He’s been great for the area.”

UKMK3’s Steal the Show By

As the proud owner of a less than pristine Golf of the Mk3 vintage and a member of the MK3 owners club, I made it my duty to represent the Glasgow branch of the club at this auspicious inaugural gathering.

Before I even begin this week I’m going to apologise, as this week’s feature is more than a little self indulgent. Last weekend I made the most important pilgrimage of the year for UK VW fans, the annual DubMania show at Weston Park in Shropshire, a show that for this VW fan was made all the more important as this beautiful country house and estate was the backdrop to the first national gathering for the Volkswagen MK3 owners clubs.

After the gruelling six hour drive to Weston Park from Glasgow on Saturday, during which I seriously reconsidered my stance on needing air conditioning in Britain, I was greeted by an already bustling showground with a large number of cars already in attendance despite the show proper not scheduled until the following day. Saturday night was definitely the night for the owners and drivers. Arriving at the MK3 stand, which was heavy with the aroma of meat being charred to barely edible chunks on disposable barbecues, I was greeted by some of the most

friendly people I’ve ever met at a car show, and made to feel welcome as the only member of the Scottish contingent to make the trip.

The cars on display at the club stand were without a doubt some of the most creatively and fantastically modified cars at the show, a gulf apart from the Audi club who seem to believe conformity to factory spec is key rather than individuality. As the night continued and a fair amount of refreshments were imbibed by everyone present, the nights entertainment in the form of a DJ set went down a treat which was supplemented by some serious sound system wattage from the club stand. The following morning everyone was up and about at 7am, polishing cloths in hand, changing wheels and generally

Tigers tough weekend

Following last weekend’s Knock Out Cup success over London side Rye House Rockets to reach the quarter final stage, the Glasgow Tigers are back on the road again this weekend with three Premier League matches in successive days. Despite a heavy weekend schedule coming up the Tigers will travel South with renewed confidence having performed solidly in London, and again in Glasgow, in last weekend’s cup victory. Tigers Danish starlet Anders Thomsen was the stand out performer in London, contributing 13 points to the Tigers cup cause, however it was a solid team performance in Sunday’s concluding tie - with Glasgow riders winning twelve of the fifteen heats which saw the Tigers through to face Newcastle in the quarter finals.

Friday night will see the Tigers travel to face reigning Premier League champs Somerset in what will be an extremely tough contest, the next evening the team return, this time on league business, to again face Rye House in London, before trekking back to Glasgow overnight to do battle with a solid Ipswich side at Ashfield this Sunday afternoon (tapes up @ 3pm).

Ex fan favourite John Collins has been announced at assistant manager to Ronny Deila. 18 years after Collins left the Bhoys to try his luck in France with Monaco, he has returned to assist Deila and help him acclimatise to the Scottish Game. With the Scottish champions facing three Champions League qualifiers to reach the group stages, Deila will be glad to have Collins in his corner. Collins having played in the Champions League and has a strong understanding of Scottish football.

Collins also has a strong affinity with the Celtic fans after appearing 229 times for Celtic between 1990 and 1996. With two of Celtic’s Champions League qualifiers being played at Murrayfield due to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Deila and Collins will face a different kind of atmosphere in Edinburgh(Collins might have a few friendly faces in the crowd after previously playing for and being manager of Hibs.) Collins said “It is a huge honour for me to return to Celtic, the club which

has always been such a major part of my life. “I am grateful to Ronny for giving me this wonderful opportunity and I look forward to working closely with him and the players to ensure that we can continue to bring the good times to Celtic.” He continued. “I will support the manager in every way and I am sure that together with our players, the backroom staff and the fans, we can all play our part in bringing success to the club.”

AGAINST ALL ODDS So who’s called in sick already this World Cup? The late games may be taking their toll, but they’re worth it. We’ve seen the highest goal tally to the start of a World Cup in many a year. I think the open attacking play, the introduction of the “Brazuca” and the fact the World Cup is being played in Brazil has culminated in the goal fest we have seen thus far. Expect it to continue. At time of printing, some odds have not yet been published, but I expect those selections to be 3/1 or above, so very good value. 22nd June - U.S.A to beat Portugal and both teams to score 15/2 , is tremendous value, with a disheartened Portugal side taking on a side brimming with confidence 26th June - With the same team involved in my next selection, I fancy the powerful and clinical German side to beat U.S.A led by former German hero, Jurgen Klinsmann, and both teams to score again. The Diver has a point to prove, but I feel the Germans will be just too strong, there will be goals! (expected odds of 3/1) 23rd June Sees Spain take on the Socceroos. The Aussies always put up a good show, but the might of Spain (along with the pressure after their shock opening defeat to Holland) will be too strong, but like most games so far in this World Cup, there will be goals (expected odds of 3/1) 21st June sees the Final day at Ascot, the Two races that catch my attention are the Wokingham Stakes and the Coronation Stakes. First off the Wokingham Stakes, with the dry forecast predicted I think the fast finishing Ninjago (14/1) is great value, especially with Paul Hanagan in the saddle. Coronation Stakes – Lightning thunder is my pick here, this has been her aim for a while and with an interesting jockey change, the experienced and flamboyant Olivier Peslier taking over from up and coming Harry Bentley, this could prove to be a race winning decision by her owners. Singles – U.S.A to beat Portugal and btts 15/2, Germany to beat U.S.A btts (expected odds of) 3/1, Spain to beat Australia btts (expected odds of) 3/1 Ascot – Wokingham Stakes -Ninjago 14/1 (each way) Coronation Stakes - Lightning Thunder 9/2 (each way) By

All eyes on the Scottish Historic Championship Ryder Cup note unveiled By

By

Lauren Black

Dreeva Vine

Strangely enough on the opening game of the Scottish domestic football calendar, all eyes wont be on the champions Celtic aiming to make it four domestic titles on the trot, but instead, watching one league below as Rangers open up their challenge for the Championship title against newly relegated Hearts.

Celtic have had to postpone their opening fixture as the Commonwealth Games are in town, and the stadium will not be ready for the opening days fixtures. That leaves Rangers to face one of the teams who will fancy their chances of being promoted straight back to the Scottish Premiership. Hearts have a young squad but most of them have nearly a full season

of Scottish Premiership experience under their belt, and will fancy their chances against a Rangers side who have had to battle for a win on the pitch while the boardroom tears itself apart. Make no mistake about it, this opening result will set the benchmark for the rest of the season, if they win it will prove they’ve got the bottle to fight their way back to the top of

Scottish football, but if they lose (or lose badly), not only will it signify to the Rangers fans that its going to be a long tough season. But other teams will consider Rangers as fragile and fancy their chances when playing them. Rangers also face Hearts on the final game of the season, what the betting that it becomes a title decider?

World Cup Round-Up This week in a historic first, The Royal Bank of Scotland and Ryder Cup Europe unveiled the worlds first Ryder Cup commemorative bank note. The limited run five pound note utilises a number of revolutionary new materials and processes in it’s production, including a new hybrid paper, the first of its kind in the UK or Europe which is produced using a mix of traditional cotton bank not paper and polyester. This hybrid material makes the note much more durable than standard bills, resisting staining and tearing to a much higher degree. The special run note will also feature a unique Ryder Cup shaped clear window, the first of its kind in Europe. To add to the new notes desirability for collectors, it will be the first bill to sport the signature of RBS Chief Executive, Ross McEwan. Most of the notes will end up in the hands of Ryder Cup practice day and match day ticket holders, with an exclusive one for one exchange at the Gleneagles course during the week of the Ryder Cup.

For those not lucky enough to be attending the event itself, the merchandising office at the Ryder Cup is releasing a number of notes for sale which will be presented in a special folio display package available to purchase for Ryder Cup attendee’s which features a slot for displaying their used ticket as well. Richard Hills, Europe’s Ryder Cup Director, said: “Bank notes are part of a stable of collectible items that people love to buy, or give as a gift, to commemorate major events. They don’t come much bigger than The Ryder Cup and we know that many people will want that special memento to mark the time it came to Scotland.’ The bank note was designed and developed by Royal Bank of Scotland as part of the bank’s ongoing commitment to Scottish golf. The first notes are already being printed by specialist German firm Giesecke & Devrient, and the official commemorative packages are ready for pre-order via the Ryder Cup website at £20. The notes will not be in general circulation, however they will be legal currency.

One week into the 2014 World Cup and its been quite an adventure so far, the majestic (Van Persie’s header against the Spanish) the unbelievable (Germany drubbing Portugal) The sleep inducing (Nigeria vs Iran) and the downright bizarre, England’s physio Gary Lewin breaking and dislocating his ankle(while celebrating England scoring against Italy.) So far Brazil, the early tournament favourites, have flattered to deceive, after a lacklustre win on the opening day, they struggled against a defiant Mexican side with the game finishing a stalemate. Belgium found themselves coming from behind, after Algeria, who hadn’t scored a goal in a World Cup for 28 years almost caused the upset of the tournament so far, but ultimately fell 2-1 to a relieved Belgian side. Costa Rica put highly rated Uruguay to the sword, however with Luis Suarez declaring himself fit to play the English and almost guaranteed

to be in the starting 11. England will face a far more formidable force than Costa Rica did. Both Uruguay and England needing a win to get their World Cup campaign back on track. France ran out comfortable winners against Honduras although not before taking several kicks along the way, Honduras finishing the game with ten men after Wilson Palacios was sent off for repeatedly fouling the French team. Argentina and Lionel Messi lived up to his top billing although he started the game with nerves(which he admitted to) got his name on the score sheet. The game finishing 2-1. Although a spirited Bosnia side will cause Nigeria problems in their next game. Nigeria arguably the most disappointing side of the World Cup so far. Switzerland scored in the final minute to claim a valuable three points after Ecuador had opened up the scoring, Switzerland scoring in the last ten seconds of the third minute of injury time. The USA had to battle for the

three points against Ghana. Ghana equalising in the 82nd minute and having the chance to pull ahead, were thwarted by an 86th minute goal to break Ghanaian hearts. Russia and South Korea finished a stalemate with the Russian keeper Igor Akinfeev palming the ball into his own net giving South Korea the lead. The South Korean jubilation was short lived however, as Russia staged a comeback and equalised 6 minutes later, both teams pushed for the winner but couldn’t find the winning goal. So far the World Cup has been everything a World Cup should be (even a little terror as fans tried to smash the windows of the ITV studio’s while live on air) The second round of games we will get a better understanding of who is expected to qualify and who is in danger of getting the first flight home. With everything to play for. Game onnnnnnnn By
