North Ayrshire Council are pushing on with plans to close Irvine’s iconic Magnum Leisure Centre in 2015.

The council are citing a budget deficit and a promise to build a new leisure centre in Irvine town centre as two of the reasons the Magnum needs to close. However campaigners are determined not to go down without a fight and are asking the council “why don’t you spend the money regenerating the Magnum instead of condemning it?”

Campaigners also believe that the council’s plan to build a new centre is flawed because the new leisure centre will be vastly inferior to its predecessor. Campaigners on the website (www.savethemagnum.org) state that if the council press on with their plans to shut down the building, the heart will be essentially ripped out of Irvine.

It will also hinder future generations, taking away their opportunity

to enjoy a monumental part of Irvine and indeed North Ayrshire. The new leisure centre will be vastly smaller in size.

Two historic graded buildings will also face demolition if the plans are followed through, in a way, destroying Irvine’s past and future. The council are claiming that by building a new leisure centre nearer the centre of town it will be possible to refurbish the Town House which of course is a Grade B listed building.

The placing of an order for advertising to be included in any publication or website shall amount to an acceptance of these conditions.

Campaigners however are in the belief that a building of this type is in direct contradiction with North Ayrshire’s conservation policy. In the official North Ayrshire Council mandate and guidelines (Google, North Ayrshire Conservation Areas) there are strict rules of which buildings and architectural interests in the area must adhere to. Considering you need permission to erect a satellite dish or even carry out work on trees. Destroying two historically graded buildings and building another adjacent to yet another graded building seems to fall somewhere outside of the North Ayrshire Council conservation laws. The Magnum has been in a state of social decline for more than a decade. 2002 witnessed the cinema close, 2004 the flumes and Spacebowl close, 2005 older kids Softplay closed, 2006 the outdoor pool closed, and three years ago in 2011, the ice rink closed down. Leaving the Magnum a shell of its former self. When the campaigners asked how the council planned to control the increase in traffic around the Town Hall, which is an area already highly congested, they answered “people can use public transport.” Which seems to be a less than adequate solution to a problem that will only increase as the new building garners popularity.

www.ayrshire-news.co.uk attracted thousands of visitors to the centre, but also attracted thousands of people to Irvine, increasing money into the local economy and helping businesses across the town. Will the new building have the same attraction as the famous old building? Although with its expected closure in 2015 Irvine’s famous landmark time seems fleeting. Campaigners still have a glimmer of hope. With visitor numbers still being relatively high and in December 2013 a new Astroturf football pitch was purchased. With free swimming for kids being reintroduced this summer and KA Leisure promising to continue looking for investment all is not forsaken for campaigners. Scott Morrison of KA Leisure had this to say about the Irvine Magnum “Although the Magnum Leisure Centre is due to be replaced in 2015, we are still open for business and KA Leisure will continue to invest in all our facilities, to improve the service provided, increase customer visits and maximise income. He continued “We’re still looking to try and attract more people to the centre, use the facilities and make it an enjoyable experience.”

In 2012 the Magnum held events that

Bedroom Tax looms over Scottish Government

Katy Clark has been speaking to worried constituents in North Ayrshire are still facing the threat of the Bedroom Tax long after the Scottish Government agreed to get rid of it.

On the fifth of February the SNP surrounded by much fanfare, proclaimed that they were ejecting the hated tax from Scotland through mitigation of funds. The plan was to use Discretionary Housing Payments(DHP) however a cap must be lifted by the UK Government for this to progress and so far they are refusing to lift it. The UK Government are adamant that the Scottish Government has the current powers to lift the bedroom tax if they want to. Katy has written to North Ayrshire Council and Margaret Burgess, the Scottish Government minister, for clarity on what will be in place

Katy Clark said, “When the Scottish Parliament passed its budget anti bedroom tax campaigners across Scotland welcomed the funding to fully mitigate its effects. However, over a month on, those affected by the bedroom tax are still being told that they will have to pay the bedroom tax beyond 1st April.” “With the funding having been agreed concerned tenants are still being told they have to pay the bedroom tax and this is causing a great deal of unnecessary distress. I have therefore asked the Scottish Government for an urgent announcement on how they will mitigate the bedroom tax. It cannot be allowed to drag on any longer with people left wondering what they need to do from 1st April onwards.” By

Investigation at Scottish Government unleashes dental surgeries Child Poverty Prevention Strategy NHS Ayrshire & Arran is writing to just over 5,100 patients to tell them about an investigation into infection control precautions at the dental surgeries at Millbank Lane, Cumnock and Mill O’Shields Road, Drongan. The surgeries belong to one dental practice. This follows a previous patient notification exercise in October 2013. As a result of the first patient notification exercise, we now have additional information about potential breaches of infection control precautions that could have occurred at the Practice before October 2013.

Dr Elvira Garcia, Consultant in Public Health Medicine said: “This Practice has been under investigation because of concerns around the infection control procedures carried out at the Practice. We conducted a patient notification exercise in October 2013, and as a result of this, we now have additional information about potential breaches of infection control precautions that could have occurred at the Practice. “NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s Health Protection Team, together with local

and national experts, has assessed this new information and, although the risk of infection to patients is still considered to be very low, we cannot rule this out completely. “It is important to point out that this is a very low risk of infection in relation to Hepatitis C. The risk of infection with Hepatitis B or HIV is even lower.” NHS Ayrshire & Arran is now offering patients of this Practice testing for the blood borne virus (BBV) infections, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). This is as a precaution only.

We appreciate that the patients of this Practice will have questions, and may require further reassurance and advice, so we have set up a free telephone helpline*. The number is 0800 085 8531. Patients of the Practice can also call this number to arrange testing for BBV infections.

There are some patients for whom we have been unable to confirm a current address and who will not be receiving a letter. If you think you should have received a letter and have not received one by Wednesday 19 March, you can get further information by calling the telephone helpline on 0800 085 8531.

Local SNP MSP Willie Coffey has welcomed the publication of the Scottish Government’s Child Poverty Strategy, which seeks to tackle the causes of poverty through early intervention.

This comes at a time were it has been discovered that as much as one child in seven does not have a winter coat to wear during the coldest parts of the winter season and also as much as one family in five has had to use a food bank to feed their family. The Scottish Government initiative aims to give advice and help households maximise household resources through advice on welfare and benefit changes. It is also their aim to increase the chance of employment and help deal with any underlying debt issues. The second part of the initiative aims to improve a child’s life chances through added emphasis on educational benefits, healthy living and early years development. While there has been a reduction in recent years, figures in the strategy show that child poverty in Scotland is set to increase to levels previously

seen in 2003/04 due to the impacts of welfare reform. Commenting, Mr Coffey said: “This is an important step in tackling child poverty in Scotland. “At a time when UK Government welfare cuts are set to plunge another 100,000 children in Scotland into poverty by 2020, the Scottish Government is setting out its plan as to how best to mitigate the damage being caused by Westminster.

child poverty early, focussing on working families as well as those who are unemployed, we can make a real difference to children’s lives in Scotland. “It’s just a shame that we find ourselves having to mitigate Westminster’s incompetence in the first place. “Recent figures show that Scotland’s welfare bill is growing at a slower rate than the UK’s, meaning we can more than afford a fair welfare system.

Assad Starving refugee camp

Search Continues for Missing Malaysian Airliner

Israel retaliates against Syria

China last week intensified search efforts for the missing Malaysian Airways flight, committing a further 30 ships to the search and rescue operation.

Syrian leader Assad’s regime using “starvation as a weapon of war” against Damascus refugee camp.

Pro Assad regime forces in Syria have been using starvation as a weapon against refugees in the Yarmouk district of Damascus. Those sheltering in Yarmouk are made up mostly of women, children, the elderly and infirm. In a report released by Amnesty International the situation has been described as a “catastrophic humanitarian crisis” as families are being forced to “scavenge for weeds and roots in order to eat while under the threat of government sniper fire.”

The district has been under siege since December 2012, but since the 18th of January all access has been denied for people and organizations trying to deliver essential supplies such as food, water and basic medical matériel. Humanitarian organizations have also been refused access to the besieged refugee camp.

around 128 civilians have died since the restrictions came into force in January. According to eyewitnesses in Yarmouk, most of those killed have died due to government sniper fire, starvation and illness. Philip Luther, Amnesty’s Middle East director said:

“Syrian forces are committing war crimes by using starvation of civilians as a weapon of war. The harrowing accounts of families having to resort to eating cats and dogs, and civilians attacked by snipers as they forage for food, have become all too familiar details of the horror story that has materialised in Yarmouk.”

Recent figures procured by Amnesty International have indicated that

Israel says it has attacked several military sites near the disputed Golan Heights area in retaliation for a bomb attack which wounded four of its troops who were on patrol near the border of the demilitarized zone between the disputed territory. Among the targets were a headquarters, a training facility and artillery batteries, the Israeli military said. This is the latest in a succession of attacks on Syrian government controlled military facilities Israel has carried out since the revolution began in Syria three years ago. Israel believes that the Assad regime

is supplying Lebanese Hezbollah militants in the region with rockets and other matériel which are being used in attacks against Israeli civilian and military installations. The Syrian government has yet to comment on the attacks, but it is believed that there were no casualties as a result of the attacks.

The move comes after the controversial referendum held in the peninsula last week, in which Crimea voted to secede from Ukraine and join the Russian Federation. The referendum which has been deemed illegal by the US and EU was ratified by Russian PM Vladimir Putin, who accepted the Crimean application to join Russia. According to Ukrainian government sources, the head of the Ukrainian Navy, Admiral Serhiy

Hayduk, has been captured and detained by the FSB. The FSB which is the spiritual successor to the KGB has confirmed that they have the Admiral in custody. The US and EU have placed sanctions on key Russian and Ukrainian officials who are involved with the Russian occupation of the Crimea, and have threatened that if Ukraine’s sovereignty is further threatened that there will be further “far reaching and meaningful consequences” for Russian interests. John Kerry, the US secretary of State has described Russian actions as an “unacceptable land grab” and that the situation is “reminiscent of the 19th century”. By

North Korean oil tanker runs Libyan naval blockade, destination unclear, North Korea disowns ship

A North Korean oil tanker has sailed out of the rebel held port of Sidra in Libya, defying the governments block on the export of oil from rebel controlled areas.

Unidentified pro Russian forces have taken control of the Ukrainian Naval Headquarters in the Crimean city of Sevastopol, reportedly killing one Ukrainian officer and capturing the head of the Ukrainian Navy.

The search which is now being conducted by an international team of 26 countries has faced controversy, as countries within the militarily stand offish region have been slow to reveal information over the last radar signals received from the flight, not wishing to reveal their intelligence capabilities to neighbouring nations.

The “Morning Glory” which is registered in North Korea is thought to have taken on 234,000 barrels of crude oil at the port of Sidra before attempting to evade the Libyan naval blockade on the port. Libyan naval spokesman Habib al-Amin has said that the navy fired on the vessel but was unable to disable it.

North Korean spokesman Jon Ki Choi has said that the North Korean government revoked the Morning Glory’s registration after it learned of the incident. This incident is fueling speculation that North Korea is funding the Libyan separatist groups, who have occupied three major ports since July of last year, however North Korea renounces all claims that they are supporting the rebel forces. The ships current final destination is still unknown, however the Libyan government has requested support from the Egyptian government in order to stop the run away tanker. By

Mmmm...Cumnock Academy love Pi

Pi madness is catching on in schools across East Ayrshire – and there’s been a recent outbreak in Cumnock.

In a recent Pi Day celebration of fun activities, the highlight was a pupil performance for headteacher Angus McVake of the song PiMCA.

March has always given mathematicians reason to celebrate because of the number Pi which begins 3.14159... and which has a decimal form that stretches to infinity. Since 14th March is written as 3.14 in many countries, the date is the obvious choice for celebrating Pi Day.

Cumnock Academy maths teacher and Pi fan James Burns said: “Lots of pupils work with Pi and know that it is the ratio between the circumference and diameter of a circle, but few actually know the importance of this amazing irrational number! “Pi is absolutely fundamental to humanity and has made valuable contributions to engineering and physics”.

Mr Burns led the Pi fun in the school for classes

from S1 to S6, who enjoyed taking part in a range of related activities.

Some formed a ‘human 3.14’ in the playground. Others played Pi dingbats, investigated the area of circles and explored the history of Pi. There were songs such as PiMCA – previously recorded by fellow teacher Chris Smith of Grange Academy, Kilmarnock and available on Youtube. The Cumnock pupils even made Pi cakes and tried Buffon’s needle experiment, which can be used to design a method for approximating the number Pi.

Stagecoach

Brings Smarter Travel To Scotland Scottish Transport Minister Keith Brown has welcomed the news that Stagecoach bus passengers in Scotland are to benefit from smarter travel for the first time following the launch of an innovative smartcard ticketing scheme in West Scotland. The Stagecoach Smartcard scheme – which is now live across Stagecoach services in Glasgow, Ayrshire, Arran and Dumfries and Galloway allows Stagecoach bus passengers to store their travel electronically on a smartcard instead of using paper tickets. For the first time, it also offers customers the chance to pay for their travel through hassle-free automatic payments. The introduction of smart ticketing technology is another demonstration of Stagecoach’s commitment to making travel easier and more convenient for its customers. To mark the launch of the Stagecoach Smartcard, Stagecoach West Scotland is offering a 50% discount on weekly megarider tickets purchased online between 19 March 2014 and 2 April 2014. Customers must make their purchase through www.megaridersale.com/West-Scotland in order

to receive the discount. All tickets bought through the promotion will be issued to customers on a StagecoachSmart travel card which stores the tickets electronically rather than using a paper ticket. Once customers have a StagecoachSmart card they can load their bus tickets on to it time and time again. The launch of StagecoachSmart in West Scotland also offers passengers the chance to sign up to the company’s new Megarider Xtra ticket which allows monthly payments to be debited from the customer’s bank account on an agreed date each month, meaning they no longer have to renew their ticket manually. The customer’s Megarider Xtra ticket is stored on their StagecoachSmart travel card and simply remains valid for travel until the payment is cancelled. From now on, Stagecoach customers who purchase a 1 Week or 4 Week megarider or megarider Xtra ticket online will have their ticket sent out to them on a StagecoachSmart travel card with their travel loaded on to it. Thereafter they can add travel to their smartcard either online or on board the bus.

Director of Response and Resilience for SFRS, Assistant Chief Officer David Goodhew said the new vehicles represented a £3.8million investment by the service. He said: “The new appliances are state-of-the-art and will further enhance service delivery to communities across Scotland. “The vehicles are equipped to a high specification and geared towards meeting the

IRA claims to have “new batch” of Semtex

NATIONAL NEWS

A.S.O.S shares Hunt for new drop £1 billion suspect in ASOS shareholders received McCann quite a shock on Tues 18th of march as stocks plummeted by disappearance £1 billion pounds, the companies greatest loss for five years.

Chief Executive Nick Robertson founded the company in 2000 and its revenue has steadily increased year on year, thanks to its fashion friendly attire and fast changing styles.

Dissident republicans in Northern Ireland are claiming to have acquired a new batch of semtex, which they claim was used in an attack on a Police Service Northern Ireland (PSNI) Land Rover in Belfast last week.

The PSNI have been unable to verify the claims made by the IRA, however, if the explosives used were part of a new batch, it is extremely worrying for the PSNI. As it would show that dissidents have acquired new sources of armament. It is believed

that previous explosives which have been used in attacks in recent years were from stockpiles built up under the Provisional IRA, which disbanded after the Good Friday Agreement. The group currently calling itself the IRA was created after the splinter groups The Real IRA and the Republican Action Against Drugs (RAAD), who disagreed with the Good Friday Agreement joined forces in early 2013 and began a new campaign of violence in the North. reveals new pound coin The current pound coin is set to be retired in 2017, as revealed by Chancellor George Osborne last week, the change is being planned due to the fact that an estimated 3% or 45 million current pound coins in circulation are counterfeit copies The Royal Mint has said the move to the new coinage would “increase public confidence” in UK currency and reduce costs for business’ and government alike. The new pound coin is modelled after the now defunct threepence bit, which was retired after decimalisation over thirty years ago. One side will like all UK currency bear the head of the Queen, but a competition will be held to decide upon the design for the reverse of the new coin. The new coin was revealed the morning before the budget by Chancellor Osborne via a photo on

twitter with the Chancellor tweeting “Today I will deliver a Budget for a resilient economy - starting with a resilient pound coin” The government, citing the high level of counterfeiting of the current coin as the reason for the change said “With advances in technology making high value coins like the £1 ever more vulnerable to counterfeiters, it’s vital that we keep several paces ahead of the criminals to maintain the integrity of our currency” By

ASOS shares fell nearly 22 percent, the biggest one-day fall since October 2008, and were trading at 5,454 pence, wiping £720 million pounds off its market value, which seemed to scare shareholders. Nick Robertson said that because of its expansion project in China, operating margins would be reduced to 6.5% percent, lower than the seven percent expected.

Sales growth was solid in Britain and strong in Europe but fell well below expectations throughout the rest of the world, rising only three percent versus expectations of 24 percent.

ASOS said it remained confident of achieving sales of 1 billion pounds for the 2013/14 fiscal year and told Reuters it expected its operating margin to rebound in 2014/15.

British Police are looking for a new suspect in relation to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann from a hotel in 2007. The police have stated that they are looking for a man who was involved in five attacks on young children between 2004 and 2006.

Detectives say the attacks happened in holiday villas occupied by UK families in the Algarve.

The man, described as tanned with dark hair, is suspected of breaking in to 12 properties from 2004 to 2010. Madeleine was three when she went missing from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Algarve, in May 2007. By

Scottish Government gives go ahead for worlds third largest offshore wind farm The Scottish Government has given its approval for the creation of the worlds third largest offshore wind farm at the Outer Moray Firth, the project which is a joint venture between Moray Offshore Renewables Limited and Beatrice Offshore Windfarm Limited, will be made up of 326 turbines. The project is predicted to generate enough electricity to power over one million homes and business’ once completed. During construction the wind farm is set to create work for up to 4,600 people and the scheme as a whole during the initial construction will be worth around 2.5 billion pounds to the Scottish Economy. Energy Minister Fergus Ewing said: “Scotland has the potential to lead the development of an exciting, new renewables industry as offshore wind moves into deeper waters. Offshore renewables represent a huge opportunity for Scotland, an

opportunity to build up new industries and to deliver on our ambitious renewable energy and carbon reduction targets.”

has welcomed the announcement, with the organization’s Chief Climate and Energy Policy officer, Gina Hanrahan stating:

Some wildlife groups have criticised the move, with the RSPB stating: “It is disappointing Scottish Ministers have decided to take such a risk with Scotland’s internationally important populations of seabirds”

“Climate change is the biggest threat facing our oceans and seas globally, and is already impacting on Scotland’s marine environment. It is therefore vital that we find ways to harness the clean energy that marine renewables, such as offshore wind, can provide.”

Taxes

This years changes to tax regulations are a mixed bag at best, with minor changes for those at the bottom of the income rate and for those on the cusp of the 40% tax rate.

For those at the bottom of the income scale, a £500 increase from £10,000 to £10,500 on the tax ceiling before income tax is levied will be welcomed, as it will allow many low income families to claw back some of the money which has disappeared from their pockets due to rising fuel costs and inflation

For those at the cusp of entering the 40% tax bracket a little breathing space has been created with a £415 rise in the ceiling from £41,450 to £41,865, which is to take effect at the beginning of next month and a further rise of 1% (up to £42,185) next year. This will be a very welcome move for middle earners who are straddling the line of the 40% tax rate who just wouldn’t be able to afford the increased tax bill each year.

A compassionate move to waive the inheritance tax for members of the emergency services who give their life in the course of their duties has been universally hailed as a smart move by the Chancellor, as many feel disaffected due to the changes in public sector pay and pension schemes which have come about through austerity measures.

Savings

In a bold move, cash and shares Isa’s are to be merged into a single account system known as the “New Isa” and it will carry a tax free savings limit of £15,000 from July of this year. Good news for those who are putting money aside also comes in the form of the abolition of the 10p savers tax rate which will allow many lower income savers to make the most of their savings.

Pensions

Some of the most controversial points of this years bill are to be found in the way in which Chancellor Osborne has changed the way in which pensions can be managed by pensioners, giving them more control over how they use the pot of money they have built up over their working lives.

Most notable of these changes is the change to restrictions on how pensioners can access their pension pot, with the removal of all tax restrictions on access to the pension pot, Chancellor Osborne end the requirement for pensioners to buy an annuity in order to release a little more of their funds.

This change is complemented with an increase in the total amount that pensioners can take out as a lump sum, the figure climbing to a monumental £30,000, some critics are worried that this will cause a wave of fiscal irresponsibility, however the Chancellor remains confident that those in the position to withdraw such a sum will retain the same level of responsibility that they have shown throughout their lives. For those who have built up a considerable pension pot over their lives there is also good news, with the taxable portion of their pension fund no longer being taxed at 55% but now at the standard rate of income tax. In further positive moves for pensioners, a new “Pensioner Bond” will be introduced, which will pay “market leading” rates and will be available from January of next year to over 65’s. With predicted rates of 2.8% for a one year bond and 4% for a four year bond.

Alcohol, Tobacco & Gambling

The Chancellor announced, much to the joy of Scottish bonds that the duty on Scottish Whiskey would remain frozen. This measure also carries on to the duty on other spirits and ordinary cider. Many people will also be glad to hear that the price of a pint of beer will go down a little due to the beer duty being cut by 1p a pint. Tobacco duty is set to rise by 2% above inflation, so in actual fact it the cost of tobacco products will increase by nearly 5% after it matches inflation.

One of the most controversial and oddball policies announced in this budget is the halving of Bingo duty from 20% to 10%, as of yet no one knows what actually spurred this change other than advice from a little known Essex Tory MP Rob Halfon. The duty on fixed odds betting machines has conversely been increased to 25%, a move which is sure to shake up the business models of casinos and betting shops alike.

Energy and Fuel

The fuel duty increase which was planned for September of this year has been binned, in an effort to help motorists keep costs down. The Chancellor announced this while saying that “under the previous administration, fuel would be 20p more expensive per litre than it is now”.

The Chancellor also announced a £7billion package to cut energy bills, the savings will however favour the energy producers, capping the controversial carbon tax at £18 per ton released into the atmosphere. This move is predicted to save families a meagre £15 a year on their energy bills and save medium sized manufacturers £50,000 over the same period.

Welfare

The welfare budget for 2015-16 is to be capped at £119billion, this is set to rise with inflation and provide a sizable pot of money which with current estimates will be more than what is needed for next year. The cap is set to rise again if the current administration is reelected to £126billion in order to keep pace with inflation. The cap excludes the pensions fund and some welfare payments, however current reforms and reductions are set to continue under austerity measures.

Star Signs

Joan Charles

I am delighted to be delivering your stars although; I won’t be doing them in the traditional way, as I am not an astrologer. For many years I have provided the stars using Tarot cards and that is what I will be doing here so, I guess in a sense they should be called, Taroscopes. Anyway, I do hope you enjoy what the cards have to say.

Aries

There is a spring in your step and you’re ready to take on any challenge that comes your way and face it head on. Life in general could be taking some turns for the better, which will lift your spirits.

Taurus

Finances are on the agenda as you cast an eye over them to ensure that they are running smoothly and everything is how it should be. Money is not your God but you do like to keep a check on it.

Gemini

There is no shame in asking for help when you need it, others are there to support you and all you need to do is say yes to them and they will be there in a jiffy. Pride can get in the way of you getting what you need so remove it.

Cancer

As we start to see a glimpse of the sun your mind could be on having things done to and in the home – which ever way round it won’t make any difference as you will just be delighted to see things happen.

Leo

Once you have made your mind up that’s normally it, there is no changing it or going back however, at times perhaps you are cutting off your nose to spite your face. Maybe giving in and meeting someone half way would help.

Virgo

A new challenge could give you a real boost and leave you feeling excited about future prospects. You are happy about things like this so long as they are done in an organized and down to earth fashion.

Libra

Lots of fun, that’s what, will make your week - especially after some tough things that may have happened over the last wee while. Getting a wee break will do you the world of good and allow you to have a fresh approach.

Scorpio

Ohh, I feel romance in the air and if you have been looking for someone who is on your wavelength then, they may well be heading your direction. Mind you, they will need to live up to you’re expectations first.

Sagittarius

There are times in life when you might think others just don’t get where you’re coming from. The communication just seems to be slightly out and I sense this across the board so, make sure you keep things clear and concise.

Capricorn

I’m feeling that you could be considering taking a wee break soon but you are in the midst of weighing up the pros and con’s of this before you do anything. I sense you would love to throw caution to the wind and just go but that wouldn’t sit well with you.

Aquarius

Seems very much like all work and little play for you just now which, in one way this is great as you have security and in another it’s taking up all of your time and leaving you with little you time so balance is called for.

Pisces

Family matters could occupy your thoughts right now and you might feel that there is nothing you can do as your hands are tied. The main thing is that you are there for support and that all that matters.

GEM Are you looking for a new destination to try this year? Whether it is your annual fortnight or a short break you are after, Nerja is well worth considering. It is situated on the Costa del Sol, Spain, which has great access from both Glasgow and Edinburgh on a daily basis in the summer, but is a great all year round destination as it boasts over 300 days of sunshine each year. You arrive at Malaga airport and the transfer time to Nerja is usually under an hour. It’s a traditional Spanish town with cobbled streets and closed to traffic in the town centre. This resort has managed to retain lots of its traditional character and charm with its narrow streets, restaurants and Tapas bars so you are spoiled for choice. Hypnosis

By Peter Kavanagh Ph.D.

Josephine Mackenzie BSC (Hons) Psychology, PG Cert Clinical Hypnosis, Clinical Practitioner. MBPS MBSCH

How many of us find ourselves questioning our life direction and purpose or whether there is a sense of a higher purpose?

Anxiety can prevent individuals from being able to function effectively and hypnosis for Anxiety is very effective as it helps the sufferer to ‘control’ those situations that can make life unbearable from exam anxiety, fear of flying, dentist, hospital, to crossing the street and much more. For the purpose of this article I will focus on performance anxiety. Performance anxiety [which we will refer to in this article as PA] is an inappropriate response to a future event. The severity of PA varies dramatically, from mild fight or flight symptoms to complete avoidance and terror of a yet to be experienced event, alongside a total inability to function in that event. Performance of any description requires preparation and a certain amount of adrenaline or stimulation, and therefore engaging the autonomic nervous system. Sometimes PA is a direct result of lack of preparation because an individual is too relaxed and fails to put in enough effort, which - is a precursor to it. Conversely, individuals who worry excessively can feel overwhelmed and produce inertia to act, which in turn prevents appropriate preparation. Either way, the net result is identical, an inability to function appropriately in the event. Hypnosis can effectively encourage working more on preparation as well as the actual performance by reducing the anxiety. When selecting a clinical hypnosis it is necessary to consider an appropriate stimulation and preparation for the patient that is sufficient to motivate change while

reducing any inappropriate anxiety. The PA can be treated as a stand-alone event for the individual and they come along for hypnotherapeutic assistance for strategic and practical purposes rather than for therapy. There are specific areas to be identified and considered when treating PA, usually the information required to formulate the specific treatment comes from the initial interview between therapist and patient at the point of taking the case history. When an individual presents with PA they will have a unique view of the problem in relation to their performance. For some people PA becomes an avoidance technique created by low self-esteem, while at the other end of the scale there are individuals for whom the desire for a ‘perfect’ performance creates constant disappointment and therefore a self-fulfilling prophecy with regard to the anxiety-evoking event or events. The PA can often be a reaction to stress. If the patient has poor coping strategies, the condition may remain impervious to the therapeutic process. It would then be necessary to explore further in relation to what is happening in the patient’s life in order to ascertain whether there are any additional stressors that are exacerbating the PA, then decide whether there would be a benefit to teaching other coping skills as a better way of managing their stress. www.hypnosis2heal.co.uk Email josephine@hypnosis2heal.co.uk Phone; 01475 727004 mobile 07976124488

The truth is we all ask this at some stage in our lives. However many fail to acknowledge that we have a purpose and our very being on this planet has actually been planned. Understanding ourselves at a deeper level helps us gain clarity and direction.

When your Soul incarnated on this earth it arrived with your first message from spirit encoded in the sound vibrations of your name. The energies of your name manifest your life’s path with all its experiences pre-chosen at source for you by you. Your name is no accident because it was precisely the vehicle that transmuted the energies chosen by the soul. In order to be born our Soul’s had to agree to the paths chosen and then we incarnated as humans to experience everything that was planned as there are no accidents of fate. What was selected by the Soul was what is required for it’s own evolution into higher consciousness while on earth for this incarnation. Upon conception we begin our journey into the physical and enter the world at birth where our environment shapes and unfolds the experiences of our life through the elements that constitute our parents, family, health and wealth, etc. If we view our life as a clock, when we were born the alarm was set and at some future time we hear the alarm and acknowledge that it is time to exit this world. Because our Soul was shown our unique life path in advance, being in charge it knows the destiny. However our worldly mind was not privy to this path and so life simply progressed. Over our lifetime we experience the intended route as energies manifest as life lessons (or challenges), goals and talents as we journey back to our source, for to be on earth is an opportunity to ascend to a higher state of consciousness. You could say that your soul agreed to a contract with the universal energies, a soul contract for this life. Through a greater connection with one’s Soul more of our true path is revealed and thus we

engage more on the route intended.

When I do a Soul Path reading is an accurate and empowering method that reveals this coded message in your name and augments the connection one has with their soul and thus their true destiny in life. It can give you clarity of your destiny and put in context the pains of the past so we may see them as the valuable lessons they actually are. A Soul Path Reading can be a very cathartic and healing experience with the realisation that our human mind is fully aware of and working with our Soul. From here on every life experience is inter-related and our past is part of our present having direct effects on our future. The process of a Soul Path reading begins with the application of the unique Numerology of Moses to the letters of your birth name. No date of birth is required just your name for it is in the vibration of each letter that holds the elements of your chosen life. Today it is being increasingly used by Intuitive Counsellors, Life Coaches and other complementary therapists and can even be used to assess the energies of a business name to help steer it to success! With all this in mind it really is of no surprise that Soul Path reading is increasing in popularity and continues to help many feel empowered to enjoy all that life brings.

Taylor Wimpey cream of the crop three years running Taylor Wimpey West Scotland’s satisfied homebuyers have rewarded the leading housebuilder with a five-star customer rating for the third year in a row. An independent survey carried out by the Home Builders Federation (HBF) and the National House Building Council (NHBC) has resulted in Taylor Wimpey retaining the maximum customer satisfaction rating based on reviews from homebuyers. Audrey Ross, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for Taylor Wimpey West Scotland, says: “We’re delighted that our satisfied purchasers have awarded us a five-star rating for customer service for the third year running. “There is no better reward that seeing a happy homebuyer moving into their new property knowing that we’ve

exceeded their expectations, both in the exceptional quality of our new homes and the first-class customer service we deliver.” The survey sought the views of more than 30,000 new-build homebuyers and revealed that nine out of 10 customers would recommend their builder to a friend. The results were announced on Wednesday 12th March at a special ceremony at the House of Commons. Stewart Baseley, Executive Chairman of the HBF, says: “These results clearly demonstrate that consumers are overwhelmingly happy with the service house builders are delivering. “The people who really matter – those who buy new homes as opposed to

industry commentators – are giving us a clear thumbs up.” The survey is sent to all new home purchasers eight weeks after their moving-in date, and asks them to rate their house-builder on the service they received and the quality of their new home, with each company then awarded a star rating from one to five.

Scotland hopes for a future of female plumbers 1% percent of plumbers in Britain are female. A shocking statistic released by Get Girls Plumbing Campaign.

Get Girls Plumbing Campaign has found that home-owners in Scotland and Ayrshire would like to see more female plumbers and a third of home-owners would prefer a female plumber to fix problems in their home. Shockingly the findings also show that a measly 1%percent of plumbers in Britain are female and it generally stems from gender stereotypes ingrained during school time. During the investigation it was found that during their time at school a quarter of females were actively discouraged from taking up a trade, instead being encouraged to take up more stereotypical friendly roles such as admin or secretarial work.

www.ayrshire-news.co.uk

PROPERTY

Nearly a half of females asked said that if they were offered the opportunity again they would go back and learn a trade because of job stability and self assurance. According to a poll of 2000 consumers conducted by WaterSafe, the UK’s leading plumber assurance scheme, found that some of the reasons would be, less likely to be ripped off and feeling more comfortable letting a woman into your home. Although the survey found that four out of five people would not car the gender of their plumber, it all depends on their skill level and their competency. The Scots being a forward thinking country believe that it is time to break gender stereotypes and believe that if they are capable women, could take up a more manual role. comments “When I was at school, noone encouraged me to think of taking up a trade and I was not allowed to study metal work and engineering which was my dream at the time. After completing a psychology degree and teaching for eight years, I decided to take up a more hands on career that meant I could be in control of my life and would give me the flexibility I’d always wanted, I chose plumbing.” Careers Advisor Donna Mason says: “I think WaterSafe’s ‘Get Girls Plumbing’ Campaign is a fantastic way of putting a trade career for women on the news agenda. Stereotyping jobs by the sex of the individual is something that needs to stop. In times when more and more young people are out of work and with a skills shortage in this country, we need to be encouraging young girls into plumbing apprenticeships.”

Nurburgring sold for over 100 million Euros

The Nurburgring has been sold to German automotive firm Capricorn Group for a figure totalling over 100m euros, with a further 25m euros of investment in the current infrastructure promised. The German bid beat the HIG Europe Group’s efforts with only minutes to spare. Capricorn will launch a new company called Capricorn Nurburgring to handle the new business from January 1st 2015. Their plans include relocating the roller coaster to another town in the

region, scrapping the maligned ring card payment system, and remodelling the current Eifeldorf as a Silverstonestyle technology park. Capricorn Nurburgring will be headed by Adam Osieka, a current VLN racer and CEO of new racing/tuning outfit Getspeed, based in the current industry park. “It was a very close thing,” admitted boss-to-be Adam Osieka. “I haven’t slept for two nights, and nothing was decided until the last moment.” By

Rocks Double Britain brings home gold at Sochi Winter Paralympics Header Weekend Great Britain’s Paralympic team reached their best medal haul for more than two decades as well as achieving a top ten finish overall, their greatest position since 1984.

It was a familiar story for the Glasgow Rocks last weekend as they entered a season defining away double header in Birmingham and Cheshire, with the latter being the 1st leg of the BBL Trophy Semi-Final.

Great Britain finished the sporting extravaganza with six medals, and a massive improvement from Vancouver four years ago when the team failed to achieve a single podium place and resulting medal. The skiers achieved five medals as visually impaired skier, Jade Ether and her guide Caroline Powell became the most decorated women in British Winter Paralympic history after claiming four medals. Three silvers and a bronze.

The Rocks outclassed the flagging Birmingham Knights side on Saturday evening, running away with a comfortable 96-75 victory only to lose their way in the final quarter of the BBL SemiFinal Trophy fixture against the Cheshire Phoenix, eventually going down 80-74.

Due to the success and media attention that the athletes received during London 2012 the British teams had more determination to achieve success and not allow London 2012 to become a pedestal of success that couldn’t be reached again.

The weekend started with great promise as the Rocks swept aside basement team, Birmingham Knights with a clinical display of basketball. The Rocks came flying out of the blocks and established an early 16-5 lead, before the Knights brought it back to single digits with a three-pointer. However, this would be the closest that the Knights got as the Rocks continued to pull throughout the game as the Rocks sailed to an easy win, with a final score of 96-75. The Big test of the weekend was to come in the form of the Cheshire Phoenix on Sunday night. The Rocks knew that they had to keep it close to give themselves a fighting chance in the 2nd leg of the BBL Tr ophy Semi-Final which is to be played at the Emirates Arena on the 14th March. The Rocks led for the majority of the game and only relinquished their lead with 3 minutes remaining on the clock. The first 3 quarters saw the Rocks play some of the gutsiest basketball they have played all season, however a familiar sight occurred to the Rocks during the final quarter as they once again lost their way and crashed to a demoralising 6 point defeat – not dissimilar to the Scotland Rugby teams demise in the final minutes of their Six Nations test against the French. Coach Sterling Davis had the following to say about the weekend: ‘It was another weekend full of what if’s. We played great for 7 quarters over the weekend only to falter at the very end. I thought we played extremely well at Birmingham and I felt that we were in complete control of the Phoenix fixture until the very last quarter when it all went wrong. It would have been great to walk out of there with a lead heading into the 2nd leg but unfortunately we were not able to do that. We will now need to focus on winning our home leg by more than 6 points on Friday night – It’s a matter of pride now, we need to stand our ground and not allow teams to steamroll over us on our home court!” Tip-off for Friday night’s fixture is at 7:30pm and tickets are still available via www.glasgowrocks.co.uk. By

Kierran Allardice

British Paralympic Association chief executive Tim Hollingway had this to say about the success of the team at the Winter Paralympics “It feels like our eyes are now turning towards Pyeongchang in four years’ time,” said Hollingsworth. “We can kick on and not go there in hope but go there with real ambition. “London had a seismic effect on the Paralympic movement and we are trying to move on from it but the rest of the nations still want to remind us of how fabulous it was. “But I think we can now look at Sochi and say the next Winter Games in Pyeongchang has something to build on massively.” The skiers claimed five medals when their minimum expected medal tally was two and the wheelchair curling

team bettered their top four target by securing a bronze podium place. The Paralympic success didn’t end there however as Great Britain vanquished a 38 year wait for a Winter Paralympic gold medal. Kelly Gallagher and guide Charlotte Evans succeeded in claiming gold at the skiing competition. Rather than rest on the laurels of a successful campaign there was already elements of future prospects on show during the sporting event. Fifteen year old Millie Knight finishing in the top five twice in quick succession. James Whitley and Ben Sneesby 16 and 19 respectively, also bear mentioning due to expressed potential during the games. Whitley during the standing skiing event and Sneesby in the sit down skiing event. Britain finished in a top ten position whilst only competing in two of the five possible disciplines. One of the next sports that Britain are aiming to compete is the Sledge Hockey, which after a slow start has grown to become one of the most popular events

at the tournament, mainly thanks to the teams and competitors no holds barred, style of play. This year witnessed the final of the sledge hockey being broadcast live on American television for the first time as America beat the hosts Russia 1-0 in a nailbiting and rambunctious final. With the possibility of extra funding available thanks to the success of the British team, the future is looking very promising for British sport at the moment. UK Sport Chief Executive Liz Nicholl explains. “The future is looking very promising indeed, We would expect to increase the investment over the next four-year period.” International Paralympic Committee president, Sir Philip Craven, summed it up perfectly when he said “Sochi has been equal at least to London, in terms of it being a ‘breakthrough’ Games, It’s been fantastic acceleration following on from a very good Games in Vancouver as well, so I am looking forward to seeing what Pyeongchang can deliver in four years’ time.” By

Six Nations Championship Goes To Ireland This years Six Nations competition became, a two horse race between England and Ireland, in the final round of the competition, also known lovingly as “Super Saturday”. The title came down to the wire, with a triple crown winning England closing up the massive points difference the Irish had built throughout the championship with a 41 point lead over Italy at the Stadio Olympico. However it wasn’t enough and Ireland only needed to defeat the French in Paris, a feat they hadn’t accomplished in a decade, to win the title and give Brian O’Driscoll a fairy tale ending to his career.

The match in Paris for Irish, French and English fans was a heart stopping roller coaster, finally ending with a marginal two point lead which was looking shaky as the French put in a last ditch effort in the final 20 seconds which was mercifully for the Irish turned over for a penalty after the final whistle, ending the match and securing the championship for Ireland much to England’s chagrin.

This was for many rugby fans the result they were hoping for, in order to give a fitting send off to the man in the green number 13 jersey who changed the way in which rugby union was played all over the world. By

Finnerty Disappointed Over Gardiner The Ryder Cup Review Conference Loss Welcome to my new column counting down to the 40th Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in September. It may be 7 months away but it is already the talk of clubhouses up and down the country.

BRAEHEAD CLAN head coach Ryan Finnerty expressed his disappointment as the club lost out to the Dundee Stars in the race for the Gardiner Conference.

The Clan needed a win at Tayside on Sunday night to keep their slim hopes of retaining the trophy alive in a group consisting of Dundee, Fife Flyers, Edinburgh Capitals and Hull Stingrays. But it wasn’t to have performed course got a 3-1 second seeding play-offs.

be as the Stars, who well throughout the win and clinched the for the forthcoming

Clan coach Ryan Finnerty said: “I’m disappointed to give up the Conference of course, but I’ve got to congratulate Jeff Hutchins and everyone at Dundee Stars for the great year they’ve had. It’s a tough one, but the guys battled hard and we didn’t get the bounce we were looking for.”

This week the focus is on the form players from the United States. Players making the headlines at the moment are Zach Johnson, Jordan Speith and Jimmy Walker. All 3 have more or less guaranteed their ticket to Perthshire in September. Johnson, the 2007 Masters Champion, has had a brilliant start to the 2014 campaign by beating Tiger Woods in a play off in December at Woods’ own tournament, the World Challenge, including several top 10 finishes to date. His impeccable short game and previous Ryder Cup appearances are an asset to Tom Watson’s team. The highly rated 20 year old Jordan Speith like Johnson, has also made a very impressive start to the season recording several top ten finishes as well as reaching the last 8 in the Accenture Matchplay in Arizona. Jimmy Walker, the journeyman pro who’s game has went into the stratosphere from the tail end of last season to the start of this season having won 3 times on the PGA Tour from October to last month at the AT+T Pebble Beach Pro Am. It’s pretty ironic that his game has went into the stratosphere, as it is a little known fact that he is a professional deep space photographer and his work is displayed on the official NASA website. The American’s are always stronger on paper and this Ryder Cup will be no different...but we have the Poulter! More of him next week.

Dundee’s Conference win was richly deserved after what has been a solid season and they got the upper hand on the Clan early in the second period

Nikita Kashirsky made it 3-1 for the Stars in the final period, triggering the celebrations as the Stars clinched their first piece of silverware in the Elite League. For Braehead, it was disappointment on the back of a memorable 8-2 win over former Elite League champions Nottingham Panthers on Saturday, which clinched them a play-off berth. Club captain Ash Goldie scored inside the first minute to become Braehead’s all-time leading goalscorer, moving ahead of former team-mate Jordan Krestanovich. Eric Werner levelled for the Panthers, but it was as close as they got, with Joel Champagne, Ed McGrane and Goldie adding more to make it 4-1 after the first period. Panthers’ Brent Henley found himself kicked out of the game in the opening period as he rained a succession of punches on Clan defence man Chris Frank as frustrations started to show.

Nottingham’s Leigh Salters scored another in the second period, but Joe Cullen and Scott Aarssen increased the lead further for Braehead going into the third period. Champagne and McGrane added their respective second goals of the evening to make it 8-2 and over the team they look likely to face in the play-off quarter finals in three weeks time. Goldie, on becoming the club’s alltime leading goalscorer with 64 goals, preferred to talk about getting the goals that got the win rather than his own personal achievement. He said: “It’s good to reach that milestone, but it’s about putting the puck in the net and getting the wins for the team. That’s the most important thing. “Everyone was feeling good after the victory over Nottingham. I wasn’t disappointed at not getting a hat-trick, but we need to find the groove to take us into the rest of the season.” By

Tigers on the verge With little over a fortnight now until they roar into British Premier League action, Glasgow Tigers are still on the search for the final rider to complete their major overhaul from the side who collected the wooden spoon last season. Last week the club learned that their fight to bring Aussie crowd pleaser Joey Ringwood back for a second term at Ashfield Stadium had proved unsuccessful. Some rule changes and complications around renewing the Australian’s work permit to enter the UK has put an end to hopes of including Ringwood in the 2014 team.

Attention has therefore now turned to securing a replacement to link up with Dane Anders Thomsen at reserve berth, and with just two weeks until the team is due to meet for pre season practice ahead of a three meetings in three days opening schedule, pressure is on to come up with a quality replacement. A club spokesman provided an update:

Till next time, this is Eagle Eye signing off.

thanks to James Isaacs.

“A lot of work has gone into trying to get Joey back to Glasgow as we believe he was beginning to show his undoubted potential towards the end of

his first season here in Scotland and could well have been a trump card for us.

WIN S! ET TICEKE OUR N S TITIO PE COM PAGE 5! ON

We have to look forward now though and have opened signing talks with a couple of potential riders who are tried and trusted options and who would certainly score us points right from the off, which is what we need. Allowing for paperwork, we would hope to have tied up a deal within the next week at latest, we will have a full and competitive side to take to track for our opening fixtures.”

In other off track news the club this week announced having secured new team sponsors for 2014 in the form of Allied Vehicles who operate just a few hundred yards from the Tigers home patch. At a time where every professional sports club has a dependency on sponsorship the Tigers are delighted to have maintained their

tradition of attracting high profile club sponsors and see the partnership with Allied Vehicles as a long term initiative. Tigers new look team, with riders coming from Germany, France, Holland, Denmark and Australia, are all now at an advanced stage of preparation before gathering for the first time together in Glasgow on Wednesday the 26th of March for the club’s official practice event at Ashfield Stadium. The team then goes into competetive action at rivals Edinburgh (Friday, 28th), travel to Workington (Saturday, 29th) before opening their home season against Edinburgh at Ashfield Stadium (Sunday, 30th) – all fixtures and club information can be found at www.glasgowtigers.co

Ayr refuse to pause for breath Ayr will take an air of confidence into their next match against bottom of the league Arbroath.

Mark Roberts

With a resounding 5-0 win against East Fife in their previous match Ayr United manager Mark Roberts will be expecting no less than 100% percent in his quest to see his Ayr side promoted through winning the play offs.

games and still within touching distance of safety in the division.

Roberts will explain to his team that Arbroath will be no walkovers especially after winning two out of their last three

Ayr will be aiming to continue their good run of form and a win in their next match could cement their chance at promotion this season.

With Forfar in fifth place, three points behind Ayr, and Stranraer in third place three points ahead of Ayr it could see quite an effervescent end to the season, with positions still up for grabs.

Stranraer will be hoping to make amends for their recent poor run of form which could scupper their chances of a play off place.

With the timely return of 24 goal Mark Moffat after serving his four game disciplinary sentence for betting on football matches.

Moffat will be looking to make amends for his previous

indiscretions and will be firmly focussed on shooting Ayr United

into the Scottish Championship, and back into the appreciations of the Ayr fans.
