Ayr hospital under fire over hygiene Continued from page 1 A team from the Healthcare Environment Inspectorate (HEI) carried out an unannounced inspection to University Hospital Ayr, known locally as Ayr Hospital, on 1 and 2 April. Due to concerns about the cleanliness of the accident and emergency department, they also carried out an unannounced follow-up inspection on 11 April. Some of the problems found included clinical waste wheelie bins contaminated with blood spillage and improper disposal of sharp equipment. There was “thick grey dust” found in the accident and emergency department. It has also been revealed that patient equipment was found contaminated with blood and body fluids. HEI chief inspector Susan Brimelow said: “During inspection on 1 and 2 April we were not satisfied with the standard of cleanliness seen in the accident and emergency department.

We escalated our concerns to senior management and requested that immediate action be taken to improve the standard of cleanliness.” “We requested that NHS Ayrshire and Arran produce an action plan, within five working days of our initial inspection, detailing how sustainable improvements would be made to control the risk of infection,” she said She added, “Following receipt of this zaction plan, we made an unannounced re-visit to the accident and emergency department on April 11 to check on the standard of cleanliness, and found significant improvements... However, further attention to detail was still required. This inspection resulted in six requirements and one recommendation which NHS Ayrshire & Arran must address as a matter of priority. We will follow-up on these concerns at future inspections.”

Death of baby Aaron could have been avoided

The death of a baby who drowned in the bath could have been prevented, a report found.

Five-month old Aaron Egan died on 17 July 2010. Parents Thomas Egan and Chrystine Templeton were originally charged over his death but the case was dropped. Aaron’s death could not have been anticipated, a review found, but there were missed opportunities to intervene by East Ayrshire Council

and others. Susan Taylor, chairwoman of East Ayrshire Child Protection Committee, said: Aaron’s death “had a significant impact on everyone involved in providing care to him”. She said: “Child protection professionals will always strive to keep children safe, and where possible, families are supported to care for their children at home. By

Have your say on town centre parking Residents, businesses and visitors are being asked to give their views on plans for parking in town centres across North Ayrshire. Over the last year North Ayrshire Council has been speaking to local people and businesses to develop a strategy which aims to increase the availability of car parking spaces in town centres while maintaining free parking. The Council has now published a

draft town centre parking strategy for North Ayrshire and wants to hear your views on the plans. Over the next three weeks residents, businesses and visitors will have the opportunity to have their say on the strategy. You can access the draft strategy and feedback forms at your local library, local offices or online. All feedback should be submitted by June 20, 2014.

Worry about the mental health of Scotland’s Children New figures announced today reveal that hundreds of children in Scotland identified as needing mental health support are waiting more than four and a half months to be seen by a specialist.

Barnardo’s Scotland has said that today’s newly published Scottish Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) Waiting Times statistics are very concerning, and highlight the scale of challenge for health boards ahead of December 2014, when the Scottish Government’s new target of a minimum wait of 18 weeks to be seen comes in to effect. The latest figures published today by ISD Scotland show that, between January and March 2014, 580 young people waited longer than 18 weeks for treatment. The charity has a longstanding concern about the lengthy periods of time vulnerable children with mental ill-health have to wait before getting treatment. The new figures also show four NHS Boards in Scotland were not even meeting the existing target of 90% of children and young people getting seen within 26 weeks. The latest figures from ISD Scotland show:

That, in the three months between January and March 2014, 310 children and young people had waited more than 26 weeks, the existing target, to be seen by specialist mental health services

In that quarter, 580 children and young people had waited more than 18 weeks, the target due to be introduced by the Scottish Government in December 2014.

North Ayrshire Provost Joan Sturgeon presents Hayley with her early Commonwealth Games medal.

The 11-year-old from Millport took the top prize in the contest which was open to all primary school pupils in Scotland. Youngsters had to create a recipe that represented one of the 70 states participating at next month’s sporting spectacular in Glasgow. Hayley, a pupil at Cumbrae Primary, chose her home nation and her home town as the theme for a duck-based dish. She included a serving of blackpudding from the island’s butcher’s shop, which is owned by her dad Craig, and added some locally-

A special version of the Primary 7 pupil’s gold medal meal will be served up at North Ayrshire Council’s celebration dinner to mark the arrival of the Queen’s Baton to the area. More than 300 guests will attend the dinner at St Matthew’s School, Saltcoats, on Tuesday 15 July. The top ten recipes from throughout Scotland are being printed in an online commemorative Commonwealth Games cook book. Said Hayley: “My dish is designed for Scotland and Millport in particular because that’s my home town and also

the source of the wood used in the manufacture of the Queen’s Baton.” North Ayrshire Provost Joan Sturgeon visited the school on Cumbrae to present Hayley with her early Commonwealth Games medal. Provost Sturgeon said: “Hayley’s prize recipe was all her own work but I’m sure she will have been inspired by the skills and enthusiasm she sees around her. “I am delighted that the judges – faced with entries from all over Scotland – came to North Ayrshire to find a gold medal winner.”

On yer bike for Macmillan

Around 100 female bikers wearing bright pink hi-viz vests and mohawks on their helmets were joined by a few good men wearing decorated bras as they set off on their three-day, 450 mile run around the West Coast of Scotland to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Breast Way Round’s first run was in 2008 and at the end of last year’s ride their total fundraising figure stood at over £250,000. The run left Rugby Park on Friday and the riders travelled through Largs, Gourock, Inverary, Oban, Fort William, Aviemore, Glencoe and Tyndrum, finishing at Loch Lomond

Shores on Sunday where they released memory balloons over the loch. Depute Provost John Campbell went along to Rugby Park to wave the riders off. He said: “Every year, many of the riders remember loved ones, family members or friends who have lost their battle against cancer. I think it’s wonderful that they join together to do something so positive to raise money for Macmillan as well as get the chance to create new friendships and enjoy some stunning Scottish scenery along the way.” If anyone would like to donate, they can follow the link to the Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/ Breast-Way-Round-Scotland2014

The Park Hotel Ayrshire voted Best Hotel and Conference Facility

That 4 of 14 NHS Boards in Scotland are still not meeting the Scottish Government’s current target of a maximum wait of 26 weeks. All of these NHS Boards were also below the target when the last batch of figures were published on the 25th of February.

A further four NHS Board areas, making a total of eight, are not currently meeting the stricter target, due to be introduced in December 2014. On the publication of new mental health service waiting times for children and young people, Martin Crewe, director of Barnardo’s Scotland, said:

“These new figures show that hundreds of very vulnerable young people in Scotland are still waiting too long to get the critical support that mental health services provide. Children and young people who have suffered trauma and abuse need timely support. It is therefore very worrying that in some parts of Scotland young people with mental ill-health are waiting more than four and a half months to get NHS treatment. “With less than six months until the Scottish Government’s target of 18 week waiting times takes effect, health boards and the Scottish Government have their work cut out to bring down these waiting times.

“If we are going to make Scotland the best place in the world to grow up, we need to make sure that young people in every part of Scotland can get mental health support in a timely fashion.”

Kids happy with new outdoor base

Greenmill youngsters to play concert in Houses of Parliament

Children and staff at Annanhill Primary, Kilmarnock, celebrated the formal opening of their brand new outdoor classroom – just in time for summer.

Children at an East Ayrshire school are eagerly preparing for a once-in-a-lifetime trip to London in July – where they have been invited to play music in the Houses of Parliament by Lord Foulkes of Cumnock and Lord Griffiths of Fforestfach. This week, the young musicians rehearsed in their school with world famous composer James MacMillan CBE and top percussionist Colin Currie, who will be playing alongside the pupils in London.

Cllrs Primrose and Morrice with Paige (L) and Catherine (R)

On Wednesday 23 July two young people from East Ayrshire, Paige McMahon from Doon Academy and Catherine Bacon from Grange Academy will be performing in the one of the biggest events Scotland will ever see, the opening ceremony of the XX Commonwealth Games. The opening ceremony, which will be held at Celtic Park, will feature thousands of performers from across Scotland and two of the youngest performers will be Paige (17) and Catherine (17). The girls will begin rehearsing for the big day in June. They will spend the week before the event in accommodation in Glasgow, completely immersed in the show and taking part in day-long rehearsals. Paige, who has also been chosen as a baton-bearer for the Queen’s Baton Relay on Saturday 21 June for her work on the Young Ambassador programme, will be leaving school this year to pursue a career in teaching. She said: “I have such a fantastic few months coming up. I am so excited to be part of both the Queen’s Baton Relay and the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games. The rehearsals for the opening ceremony are going to be intense but it is going to be so much fun. We are all sworn

to secrecy so we can’t reveal anything about the opening ceremony, even if we wanted to!” Catherine, who leaves Grange this summer to study Musical Theatre at the Glasgow Academy Musical Theatre Arts (GAMTA), is a well known performer at Centrestage in Kilmarnock. She said: “I have had the best time at Grange Academy; the school has really supported me to follow my dream of studying musical theatre at GAMTA. The opening ceremony is going to be a real highlight in the coming months and a wonderful opportunity for my future career. I am so honoured to be part of such a momentous occasion and promise to do Grange Academy and East Ayrshire proud!” Councillor Stephanie Primrose, Spokesperson for Promoting Lifelong Learning said: “I was so impressed by Paige and Catherine; they are a real credit to their schools and their families. The girls are two of the very youngest performers to be selected

from the whole of Scotland and when you meet them it is clear to see why – they are confident, out-going and ready for any challenge. I just know that they are going to be fantastic.” Councillor Kathy Morrice, Spokesperson for Improving Community Health and Wellbeing said: “Legacy is vitality important to East Ayrshire Council and is at the heart of everything we do. The Commonwealth Games are an opportunity for young people to be inspired by all aspects of the games and to share their experiences with others. “Paige and Catherine, who have been supported by Vibrant Communities through the audition process, are going to have a once in a lifetime experience. The eyes of the world will be on Glasgow this July and I am absolutely delighted that two young people from our schools will be playing their part.”

Greenmill is the only school in Scotland and possibly the UK where all P4 – 7 pupils receive weekly whole class strings lessons. Teachers learn to play instruments along with the children – and even mums, dads and grandparents take part. The Primary 7 Strings Orchestra has already performed at the Ayrshire Music Festival, at an EIS Conference in the Grand Central Hotel, Glasgow and at the National Music Conference at Murrayfield, Edinburgh.

The talented youngsters also played alongside top violinist Nicola Benedetti and composer James

And she denied rumours that the structure was fitted with a huge plasma tv screen for watching the World Cup, but did hint at imaginative future plans for perhaps a patio and swimming pool.

Headteacher Christine Wilson said: “We are all delighted and very enthusiastic about going to London this summer.

The wooden structure taking pride of place in the playground was a combined effort in response to a request from the school – built by Ayrshire College students, with materials donated by local businesses.

“In order to fund the visit, we held a Spring Concert which raised over £1000 and we are indebted to local companies who have given generous donations towards our trip. “Thanks go to R.D.Hunter, Kenny’s Menswear, Morag’s School of Motoring, The Hunter Foundation and Donsport. We have also received offers of support from Bridgend Garage, Lochside House Hotel, The Beauty Room, Asda and Visions”.

The students who worked on the project were the NPA Carpentry and Joinery Group A and City and Guilds

Annanhill PS headteacher Jacqueline Hanlon said: “The outdoor classroom is a marvellous addition to the playground and will benefit the pupils by adding another dimension to their learning, in a different environment. We can’t thank everyone enough for providing this marvellous resource for the children”.

Councillor Eoghann MacColl said: “As well as providing an excellent outdoor education base for young learners, this project has also helped prepare the Ayrshire College students for employment. They are to be congratulated on their skills and hard work, as well as their contribution to their local community. Thanks also to local suppliers for their kind donation of materials for this project”.

“This is the beginning of a much wider involvement with the schools of East Ayrshire and I am looking to build on the success of the Greenmill projects. It is turning out to be a very happy and fruitful engagement”.

It is expected that Ofcom will offer other parts of Scotland the chance to have regionalised television channels. With the channel available on Freeview, Sky and Virgin it is hoped that because of the ease of access the channels will become a success and tap into more than a niche market. Currently it is unclear how they will approach this however STV director of Broadcasting Bobby Hain tried to alleviate fears in which he said “We have 50 years of television experience and we’re bringing it all to the new model of television, we know the area well and we think we know the

There have been previous attempts at local TV, Channel M in Manchester and Lanarkshire TV in Scotland, both unfortunately failed. Both previous channels did not have the one thing that STV Glasgow does however, digital access and an ease of access. Lanarkshire TV was impossible to tune into your television and so was Channel M. It could be considered that those attempts were the BETA phase and the problems have now been ironed out. STV are expecting to have invested £1million pounds into the channel but also expects the channel to have broken even within a year. Since the conception of local television channels by the then Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt, there

Councillor Stephanie Primrose, Spokesperson for Lifelong Learning, said: “This was a very lively and exuberant concert, packed with entertainment. It was clear that the children particularly enjoyed this performance – as did the audience. “Not only have the pupils learned new musical skills, but they have also broadened their knowledge and experience of other cultures. I think many of the youngsters will be inspired to continue with their drumming in the future”.

To begin with the new channels were been complimented as saying that they were the most significant development in British television since CH5 first went on air, but following that some programmes have had less than 300 viewers. It is expected that because the STV Glasgow is owned by STV there will be larger opportunity to reach a wide ranging audience base. They are also being heavily advertised on STV’s flagship station to help promote the channel. The new channel also aims to provide opportunities for university students studying at Glasgow Caledonian and Napier.

Amnesty are not taking a side in the debate, but instead encouraging both the No and Yes campaigns to ensure that human rights issues are championed and prompted regardless of the result. Katy Clark, MP for North Ayrshire and Arran, is backing this call and commented: “I fully support Amnesty International’s call for human rights to be made more prominent in the independence referendum debate. Regardless of the outcome of the referendum, we need to continue the fight for human rights to be legally recognised, understood by all and easily enforced. One of the major achievements of the last Labour government was passing the Human Rights Act in 1998 which gave political and civil rights, such as the right to life and freedom of speech, a

legal standing for the first time in our history.

“However, there is still scope for human rights to be expanded in to social and economic rights, so that we have a right to housing and employment for example. We can also make it easier for individuals to enforce their rights by ensuring that there is fair and fully funded access to the courts for people seeking justice. Internationally we also need to ensure that our government speaks out against human rights abuses, wherever they take place, and provide support to those abroad who want to improve conditions in their own country.

“I would encourage anyone attending a referendum debate or event to raise the issue of human rights, and ask the representatives on both sides of the debate what they have done about human rights and what they plan to do after the vote on the 18th of September.”

A new survey conducted on behalf of Debt Advisory Centre Scotland has revealed that of the third (29%) of Scottish adults who have been away for a stag or hen weekend, 14% had to borrow cash to be able to attend. Meanwhile, one in four (25%) respondents say they have previously turned down an invitation to the pre-wedding celebrations because money was too tight. In recent years, more grooms and brides-to-be appear to prefer a weekend away to celebrate their forthcoming nuptials than a night out, which has caused the cost of attending the event to climb higher. Yet even if they could not really afford to be there, a fifth (19%) of respondents in Scotland admit they would feel obliged to go anyway. Pushing up the cost of stag and hen dos is overnight accommodation for

one or more nights, which two-fifths (42%) of Scots who have been to one of these events cite as being the most expensive part of it. This is followed by flights or ferry tickets (22%) when the destination is abroad, drinks and meals (20%) and other travel costs (6.1%). Activities during the stag or hen do, booking additional time off work and putting money towards the bride or groom’s gift are also cited as the pricey obligations of being part of the celebrations. In fact, so expensive have some of these events become that a quarter (24%) of Scottish attendees have

Spokesman for Debt Advisory Centre Scotland Ian Williams says: “The stag/hen do is becoming an increasingly important marriage tradition, which might explain why these events have also become much more elaborate – and expensive. It’s telling that one in five Scots have felt obliged to attend even when they couldn’t really afford to. “However, what’s even more worrying is that 14% of attendees admit they have borrowed money so they can join in. If they feel they really can’t afford to attend without a loan, it might be worth these guests talking in private to the bride and groom to see if there’s another – less costly – way they could celebrate with them separately.”

TWO THOUSAND GMB SIGNATURES SAY “STOP THE CUTS” Earlier this year South Ayrshire Council announced massive spending cuts to their services in and around schools. Cuts are planned to janitors, cleaners, school crossing patrollers and school kitchens. All in all we believe that these cuts will make schools less safe and less healthy to what they currently are.

Many GMB Members work in the kitchens in South Ayrshire and the service which they provide is incredible. They come in early and stay on late, without any extra pay. The staff know the children who might not have had any breakfast and ensure that there is some toast and milk available or whose family might be struggling financially and make sure the children always get something.

The catering staff are such an integral part of the school and in some cases a tuck shop is provided which the kids love, and the council want to close these as well. The most frustrating aspect of all of this is that the Scottish Government has recently published a document titled ‘Better Eating, Better Learning’ and this highlights the issue of how important lunchtime is to pupils and that it should be seen as an educational experience with fresh and good quality of food being provided at all times.

Yet South Ayrshire Council is shutting school kitchens. You couldn’t make it up.

The catering staff love the pupils and the pupils love the catering staff, and I would encourage every councillor who has voted for this closure to visit the threatened schools at lunchtime to see the dedication and pride that is provided by our Members who provide such a crucial service.

Further to this, South Ayrshire Council wants to attack the hours of work done by janitors and cleaners in the very same schools where they are closing school kitchens. It gets me asking the question: what priority is this council giving to educational matters? Of course I will be accused of scaremongering and that parents and pupils will be told that they have nothing to worry about. Really? South Ayrshire Council has paid out around £500,000 to two previous chief executives and now they feel it is appropriate to close school kitchens. This council’s priorities are all wrong. They should be serving the people not shafting them. How happy would you be if your child was in a school with no janitor, cleaning is at a minimum and the

school meals are given a tour of Ayrshire before they arrive at the school for reheating and serving? With all this in mind the GMB Trade Union is campaigning to have these cuts reversed and we started a petition several months ago with the ambitious target of reaching 1,000 signatures. The petition is called ‘S.O.S. – Save our Schools’. The support which we have received is overwhelming and when we present the petition to the council it will show 2048 signatures which is incredible. What should get many councillors thinking is if those signatures are turned into votes at the next election many of them will lose their seats.

GMB is a campaigning trade union focused on protecting GMB members in their workplaces and growing the number of GMB members in order to strengthen the Union’s power. GMB has almost 610,000 members working in every part of the economy. One in every 32 people at work in the UK is a member of GMB. GMB is organised in 34 of the UK’s biggest 50 companies. East Ayrshire Council and Police Scotland joined forces this week to raise awareness of Doorstep Crime with supermarket visits to raise awareness of the problem.

Community Safety, Trading Standards and the Police took part in a joint initiative, handing out leaflets which explain how people can protect themselves from doorstep crime and also providing essential advice to members of the public. Doorstep crime falls into two very clear categories:

• bogus callers - who try to get into someone’s home to steal cash and valuables • rogue traders - who cold call, offering work to be carried out in someone’s home, they charge inflated prices and often carry out unnecessary work

Councillor Tom Cook, Depute Leader and Spokesperson for Improving Community Safety said: “Doorstep criminals often target older or vulnerable people therefore it is essential that we get out into communities and help to stop this vile crime by raising awareness and providing advice on how to avoid being caught out. “Doorstep criminals are extremely

persuasive and often pressurise people into parting with money for unnecessary work or gaining entry into someone’s home. It is very easy to be taken in by such people so it is important to be alert to both bogus callers and rogue traders. “Don’t ever let anyone into your home without an appointment, always ask for ID and don’t be embarrassed to ask someone to come back at a more convenient time.”

Chief Inspector Clarke Callaghan said: “If you have been affected by doorstep crime please contact Police Scotland on 101. Please provide as many details as you can about the appearance of the doorstep caller, the location and any other information you may think helpful. “If you ever feel threatened and unsafe, or a caller is insisting on entering your property, call 999 immediately.” Trading Standards can provide advice and support in relation to rogue traders. You can reach them on 01563 576602.

Student

Seven Tips For Starting Uni Guide: Last week I finished my first year of university and I still can’t believe how fast it’s gone, but at the same time it feels as though I’ve been a student forever.

It wasn’t always like this though. Like everyone starting out at uni, it took me a few months to adjust – a semester and a half to be exact. And because I didn’t look into what student life was like, I didn’t really know what I was walking into. Therefore I’ve put together this list for all of you starting university this coming September, and I hope that you find it useful.

Those of you going straight to uni after leaving school with have three months between the end of exams and your first semester. Feel free to relax for a few weeks – you deserve it after sitting your exams. But remember to use some of that time wisely. By this I mean learning simple cooking and cleaning skills before you go. Only in an ideal world could we live off pot noodle for a whole semester and not get sick of the taste or ill from lack of nutrients. You don’t have to be a master chef to be able to cook for yourself. Most meals require a basic understanding of an oven and a microwaving, plus a recipe book if you’re feeling ambitious. Another way to prepare is by buying and reading the books on your reading list as soon as you get it. Firstly, it’s a good habit to get into and shows that you’re eager to learn. Secondly, (for those of you rolling your eyes and muttering “nerd” at the first reasons), when you finally do start uni, it will mean that you won’t be stuck inside most nights with only your set texts to keep you company. Even if you’re not doing a particularly book-based subject, all courses have a lot more reading material than they did back at school. Also make sure you have up-to-date and appropriate ID. Sweet-talking the bouncers almost never works. It’s as simple as this: no ID, no nightlife.

Live away from home.

There are both pros and cons with going to a uni where you can’t commute from home, but if you think you can handle it, I highly recommend doing so. Uni doesn’t have to just be about higher education. Your experience there can also teach you important life skills in a safe environment. You will also have more freedom living on or near campus than you would do at home - which is particularly useful when you stumble in from a night-out or need to pull an all-nighter for that assignment you’ve been putting off for a week. Furthermore, living away from home doesn’t mean you have to go to a uni on the other side of the country. Plenty of students attend a uni one or two hours away from their home town, which leaves them the option of popping home for the weekend.

Look out for student deals.

Loads of companies do offers specific for students. Banks in particular are keen to have students open accounts with them, so they’ll offer you useful stuff like an overdraft or a student railcard. Also look into getting an NUS card as it gives you discounts on a variety of student-y things. Freshers’ week will also have a bunch of companies there handing out freebies and vouchers – so keep an eye out and take as much as you can!

Attend as many lectures as you can. Unlike school, university does not tend to register its attendance. There are less lectures a week than there are lessons taught at school. This means that each lecture contains a lot of information. Don’t get too stressed if the first few weeks are difficult – it may take a little while to adjust to this new style of learning. Talk to the professor giving the lecture or contact your tutor if there were any points you didn’t understand.

The main thing about lectures are that they are more of an introduction than an actual lesson. It will indicate what you need to study and what will come up in exams. Therefore it is important that you attend them.

Put yourself out there.

Eating on a budget

Whether commuting from home or moving abroad, uni is a place of new experiences. It is an opportunity for you to try new things and make lots of friends. During Fresher’s Week there will be a society fair. Don’t just sign up for activities you’ve done in the past. Sign up to the ones that look interesting – or even the ones that have friendly people running the stalls.

Beware the Fresher’s Flu.

I recommend stocking up on paracetamol as soon as you start uni because statistics show that as many as 90% of freshers will become ill during the first few weeks. This will most likely be a result of stress, tiredness, a poor diet and the fact that university semesters start during flu season. If you do feel ill, please stay inside and rest. You will heal faster and won’t spread it onto other students.

Get through the first semester.

For many of you, this semester will be the most emotionally trying. In the first few weeks you may feel like dropping out, but my advice is this: give it the first semester before you make any big decisions. You can always change course or transfer universities after the first year – uni has designed this year to take into consideration the fact that most of us don’t have a clue what we want to do with our lives. But if uni is not for you, or you feel like you’re not ready for it just yet, you’ll have more of an idea about it after one semester than you would after one week. By

If you’re a student, you will know that supermarket shopping sucks. As soon as you leave home, you will miss it - fact. Gone are the days when you would stroll around Morrisons with your mum, throwing whatever you fancy into the trolley and letting her foot the bill. Now you’re cupboards only see baked beans and pasta. It doesn’t have to be like this! With a few simple steps you could be dining on delicious home cooked meals - not a baked bean in sight!

1. Plan, plan, PLAN!

The success to saving money and eating healthy is planning and preparation. Make a food plan for the week, and go shopping for things for the plan at the beginning of the week. This way you have no excuse to gorge on unhealthy and expensive takeaways.

2. Ditch the takeaways!

You may think getting a takeaway is cheaper, and at £4.00 for a chicken burger and chips and can of Irn bru it’s hard to resist. However, you could buy a pack of chicken breasts for that price. Which you can make more meals with later in the week. Feel like a Chinese? Whip up a stir fry or make your own egg fried rice.

3. Don’t be a snob

Aldi, Lidl, Farmfoods and Iceland are a students dream! Aldi and Lidl are great for your general supermarket needs. Farmfoods and Iceland are great for filling your freezer on pizzas for when you are too stressed to cook. Farmfoods also have a great cheap selection of fruit and vegetables, as well as cleaning products and toilet-roll.

King Juan Carlos of Spain abdicates Syrians vote in presidential election

This week, Syria, which has been in the midst of civil war for the past three years has held its first presidential election in seven years. The civil war between President Bashir Al Assad’s regime and rebel forces has been ongoing for the past three years and has cost tens of thousands of lives and forced millions of Syrians to flee the nation. Critics of the Assad regime have denounced the election as a publicity stunt and a sham. International analysts have said that the Assad regime have ‘went to great lengths’ to present the vote as a solution to the crisis which has been under the spotlight of international media coverage for the past three years. This election, which is being presented as the first fair election in Syrian history, is the first in decades in which more than one name has appeared on the ballot papers.

Two candidates are running against Bashir Al Assad in the election, however, it has been claimed that the two competing candidates Maher Hajjar and Hassan al-Nouri have not been widely publicised and have been unable to promote their campaigns on the same level as the president. The winner of the election will be in office for a period of seven years, it is widely expected to be yet another victory for Assad. The election is being lauded as a sham by opposition groups, as there will not be any opportunity for those in either rebel controlled areas or contested areas to vote in the election. As a result of this many of the rebel groups have pledged to do all they can to disrupt the balloting process. Leader of the opposition group ‘Coalition’ Ahmad al Jarba has described the election as ‘theatre written with the blood of Syrians’. By

US warrant for Russian hacker mastermind US authorities have charged Russian Evgeniy Bogachev with masterminding a major cybercrime syndicate which has affected millions of individulas and businesses worldwide. Bogachev, who is reportedly known as ‘lucky12345’ and ‘slavic’ online stands accused of being involved in cyber attacks on more than a million computers. The charges were brought against the hacker after US authorities in conjunction with cyber crime divisions across the world took control of a botnet which was used to steal personal and financial data from

machines infected with the software,

Computer users worldwide have been urged to run system checks in order to protect themselves from the botnet attacks. The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) has released a statement saying that users probably have a fortnight before hackers would have the botnet operational again and has posted advice in its website, advising how best to secure systems from the threat. ISP’s have began contacting customers known to have been affected by the botnet this week. By

King Juan Carlos of Spain announced on Monday of this week that he was abdicating his throne, which he has held since the death of General Franco 40 years ago, Juan Carlos will be succeeded by his son the Crown Prince Felipe. The announcement, which has been viewed by many in Spain as sudden but unsurprising, comes on the back of a number of scandals involving the royal family, most recently the accusations of corruption against his daughter Princess Cristina, who alongside her husband has been accused of fraud and money

laundering through a charity trust she controls. The outgoing king was also responsible for tarnishing the image of the royals in the Spanish consciousness, as he went on a lavish elephant hunting trip to Borneo in, in the middle of the most devastating financial crisis in generations. Many in the country are calling for a referendum in order to establish whether the royal family should be abolished in favour of a republic, a system of governance Spain achieved before General Franco’s brutal Nazi backed take over in the 1930’s.

US serviceman released after five years in captivity US Sgt Bowe Bergdahl was released this week after being held captive by the Afghani Taliban, in exchange for five Taliban officials previously held in the Guantanamo Bay internment center. The prisoner swap came about after secret talks between the US government and the Taliban, which were mediated by Qatar. Bergdahl was serving in the Paktika province of Afghanistan which borders onto Pakistan when he was kidnapped on June 30th 2009 by the Taliban. The circumstances behind his kidnapping remain unclear and speculation has abounded, one theory is that Bergdahl absconded from his base due to disillusionment with the US military campaign.

US officials have said that any decision on desertion charges will be made by the army but there is ‘a feeling that the soldier has suffered enough’. Bergdahl was handed over at the beginning of this week by the Taliban to a troop of around 70 US special forces who flew into Afghani/ Pakistani border area of Khost by helicopter. Once in the air, Bergdahl reportedly wrote the letters ‘SF?’ (Special Forces) on a paper plate and broke down after the men responded: ‘Yes, we’ve been looking for you for a long time.’ By

The King explained his decision to step down in a television address on Monday evening saying that the time has come to hand over power to his third child and only son Felipe and that the prince ‘has the maturity, preparation and sense of responsibility necessary to assume the title of head of state and begins a new era of hope which combines the experience and momentum of a new generation’. This king also said that he made the decision to abdicate in January after his 76th birthday and that he was also stepping aside due to health concerns. By

New US backed unified Palestinian government sworn in

Brooks; stupid but not criminal

The defending Rebekah and Charlie Brooks at the News of the World phone hacking trial has described Charlie Brooks has as ‘stupid’ and ‘foolish’ but not criminal, the jury at the trial has heard. Mr Brooker was accused of attempting to pervert the course of justice when it was discovered that the former chief executive of News International, hid computers and pornography behind a bin in the car park of their Chelsea home on the day of his wife Rebekah Brooks arrest in July of 2011. However the Mr Brooks defence lawyer Neil Saunders, accepts that Mr Brooks were ‘unwise’ but that Mr Brooks hid the material to save himself and his wife embarrassment and to prevent the police from obtaining the only manuscript of a new novel he was writing.

After several years of often deadly division between the two main political forces in Palestine, Hamas and Fatah have signed a historic agreement to work together as a unified government.

Heathrow’s new terminal opens to passengers

The move which has been formally backed by the US this week has been slated by Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu due to the involvement of Hamas in the new government.

On Wednesday morning, Heathrow airport, the largest airport in the UK, opened the doors of it’s latest addition, the £2.5bn Terminal 2.

Hamas has been responsible for a number of attacks on Israeli interests and Israel in recent years. The US has tentatively backed the new coalition, yet has voiced its own concern over Hamas’ recent past saying that it would work with the new government but it would be ‘watching closely to ensure that it upholds principles that President Abbas reiterated today’. The first flight to land at the new terminal was an overnight US Airlines flight from Chicago, landing at 5.55am. Heathrow authorities decided to limit the number of flights landing at the new terminal over the course of this week in order to avoid a similar debacle to that of the opening of Terminal 5 in 2008 which was blighted with problems in its first month of opening. The new terminal has been built on the site of the former Europa terminal

Mr Saunders claims that what Mr Brooks did was not in fact a criminal offence as nothing found on the computers or DVD’s was criminal in any nature. Saunders also lambasted the prosecution’s case saying that it is ‘theory-driven and not evidence-led’ retaliating against the accusations that Mr Brooks was attempting to subvert the course of justice. Saunders also spoke of how Mr Brooks was scared that the discovery of such items would quickly become public knowledge if they were seized by the police due to the number of leaks that the Guardian had received in relation to the case from police sources.

Governor of the Bank of England, David Carney, hit out at unethical practice in the banking system this week in a speech delivered to industry leaders at a conference in the City of London. Mr Carney said in his speech that the bankers have been operating to a ‘heads-I-win-tails-you-lose-’ system and questioned whether or not traders met any ethical standards, Mr Carney also suggested that those traders who don’t meet professional standards should be ostracised by the industry. Mr Carney was extremely vocal on the subject of morality in business saying: ‘We simply cannot take the capitalist system, which produces such plenty and so many solutions, for granted. Prosperity requires not

just investment in economic capital, but investment in social capital.’ Continuing on the same line, Mr Carney also suggested that the pursuit of profit had moved from being a by product of good financial operations but instead into an ideology of profit at all costs saying: ‘All ideologies are prone to extremes. Capitalism loses its sense of moderation when the belief in the power of the market enters the realm of faith. In the decades prior to the crisis such radicalism came to dominate economic ideas and became a pattern of social behaviour.’ The conference held in the City of London, was on the topic of inclusive capitalism and was attended by former US president Bill Clinton and former Prime Minister Tony Blair. The dog attacked Mr Clark, dragging him into his back garden, tearing off one arm and almost removing the other before an armed police unit arrived to shoot the dog. When armed police arrived, the dog bit the barrell of a policemans rifle before being shot twice in order to kill it. The armed officer who shot the animal said: The dog was so aggressive that after it was shot once, the dog got up and was shot again for a second time. The two women, Della Woods and Hayley Sulley had left the animal in question in their back garden while they attended a barbecue, it was revealed in a post mortem examination of the animal that it had not been fed or given water for at least 45 hours previous to the attack. I am delighted to be delivering your stars although; I won’t be doing them in the traditional way, as I am not an astrologer. For many years I have provided the stars using Tarot cards and that is what I will be doing here so, I guess in a sense they should be called, Taroscopes. Anyway, I do hope you enjoy what the cards have to say.

Aries There might just be a touch of magic in the air and whatever you do seem to happen and all fall into place in jig time. This will suit you down to the ground as you like it when things happen quickly and in your favour.

Taurus Others may need to understand that you just don’t suffer fools gladly and are quick to let them know that they are bugging you. Perhaps a little patience would come in handy to help you through.

Gemini There is a transformation coming and it could be heading your direction, which is positive, and albeit you may not like change this can only be good as it helps you to sort things in your life out.

Cancer Don’t doubt your own abilities and they will soar but keep putting them under pressure and down and that’s exactly what you could attract. Life is heard enough and it is time that you got a break so PMA will get you what you want.

Leo Love and romance appear to be the order of the week and to be honest I sense that the time is right for some of you to start looking in this direction. Watch out for some interesting offers coming your way.

Virgo They say two heads are better than one and maybe this week that is the very thing that you need to help you look at a situation from a different perspective. A pair of fresh eyes will make all the difference.

Libra With summer looming I can see a list being created of the things that you will want to do to keep you amused and in amongst all of these I sense is a concert that you don’t want to miss so, get moving on that.

Scorpio I am feeling that you are in no mood for general chitchat and would like some quiet time and space to yourself at the moment. Sometimes you just need that headspace to think your thoughts in peace.

Summer Time Readings Courses:

Introduction to the Tarot– The Law of Attraction and Psychic Development courses are on-going, so, check for dates and details.

Readings:

Competition Win a Tarot Reading with Joan Charles We will be running this competition across all of our papers for the month of June so if you want to be in with a chance of winning here is what you need to do.

Sagittarius We all like a joke but so long as it’s not at the expense of someone else, I am picking up on something that could get out of hand if not handled properly so perhaps its better to think before engaging in conversation.

Capricorn A triumph means that you get a pat on the back and recognised for something that you have put a lot of hard work and effort into. Keep challenging yourself as it is obviously paying off.

Aquarius Could be that you are going to be offered something new in a work sense that will be right up your street. This could be a little different to the norm but that’s the way you like to operate anyway.

Pisces Have you got itchy feet? I have a feeling that you are looking to be on the move in some way, this could be about moving house or travel but whatever it is things are shifting and in a hurry.

Simply answer this question;

My name is Garry Jeffrey – Nixon, I am a practicing Hedgewitch and a Druid of the Sylvan Grove. The following is a snippet from my journal regarding foraging for edible and medicinal herbs during the month of May.

Here we go gathering nuts in May

This popular nursery rhyme is actually based on fact; there is a small umbellifer plant that grows in our woodlands, that produces nutty flavoured tubers during the early summer. These tubers are filled with nourishing proteins and starches and when cleaned can be added to a salad with new hawthorn leaves and beetroot.

Wild Garlic

Wild Garlic, Ramsons or Bear Leek as it is known, is a delicious, very versatile wild herb. It is commonly found along our hedgerows and wilder woodlands. Its culinary uses are many. Wild Garlic enhances the flavour of soups, stews and is an essential in a foraged salad of sorrel, watercress and young beech leaves. I blend it with olive oil pine kernels and tomato puree laced with dried crushed chillies to make an amazing pesto for salads, pasta or rice dishes. As a healing herb it boosts the immune system, reduces high blood pressure and kills harmful bacteria.

It was used in medieval times to pack suppurating wounds.

Foraging for Herbs.

The Stinging Nettle is a much maligned herb of our gardens and hedgerows. It is mostly remembered by most for the stinging rash it leaves on any skin it comes into contact with. I certainly remember looking for the Dock leaves my grandfather showed me to rub on the affected area of the stings. This perennial herb is a highly nutritious vegetable when added to soups it is also a perfect substitute for spinach. Medicinal teas can be made from nettles, which have amazing healing properties, for ailments like water retention, high blood sugar levels and also has anti inflammatory properties. Words of warning do not use nettles if you are taking prescribed drugs for any of these conditions, without advice from your GP. Nettles can magnify the effect of some drugs. As a magical plant nettles are used in protection charms. They also attract Faeries and butterflies to the garden

Happy Foraging and Bright Blessings.

Stinging Nettle

When foraging for herbs, only take what you need. Wildlife depend on them as food also. Always respect the natural world around you. I have been a witch most of my life and revere the earth as deity. Whether im foraging for culinary, medicinal or magickal purposes. I always bless the spirits of the place im in and give thanks to the Green Gods for their bounty. I hope this little snippet is of interest to you all?

IMPORTANT CAUTION: NEVER go and just take wild things and eat or ingest them in any way unless you have advice from someone who knows exactly what they are doing. There are things that can be poisonous and so it is important to use common sense and be safe by consulting someone who knows exactly what they are doing. Garry

Hi my name is Diane and I am an Angel Therapy Practitioner trained by Dr Doreen Virtue. I work with the Angels to bring their divine messages of unconditional love through Angel readings, workshops and talks. You do not need to have any special training to work and connect with your Angels. Everyone without exception has at least one Guardian Angel who has been with them from birth. The word Angel means messenger, these celestial beings bring us healing messages to help guide and surround us in love and protection. Your Guardian Angels love you, they are non-denominational, nonjudgemental and want only the best for you, but because of the laws of free will, they are not permitted to affect your life in a major way unless it’s a life or death situation. So if you have any areas of your life where you need extra support, comfort, healing, guidance or help in any way then all you have to do is ask. You can do this by praying, asking out loud, just mentally saying to the Angels, writing your Angel a letter or saying an affirmation. A lot of people I talk to don’t like to bother there Angels and feel that it would be selfish to ask for help for themselves. This is not the case and your Guardian Angels job is to work with you and help you through your life. So if they are not being asked it’s like having unemployed Angels by your side and we don’t want that do we, so please give your divine Angels permission to help you as they are waiting to go straight to work on your behalf. There are Angels to help with everything from finding that perfect job, romance Angels, healing Angels and there is even an Angel for

parking. I have asked that particular Angel many times for a parking space when rushing to a meeting and the results are fabulous, just the right space where I needed it. You can even ask for extra Angels to be by your side. Please remember you are not taking the Archangels off a more important job as the Archangels are multi-dimensional which means they can be in several places at one time. Also the Angels don’t view problems as big or small they just see that you need help and that they wish to assist in any way they can. Watch out for the many amazing ways the Angels give you signs that they are helping you from finding a feather to a dropped coin, through music and many other ways. A lovely lady I know was sitting at her husband’s hospital bed praying for help for him and for the other people in the ward. A nurse came in and said, where did all these feathers come from? When the lady looked up, in the middle of the ward was a pile of beautiful white feathers. Both the nurse and this lady looked around to find how they had got there but there was no reasonable explanation as the hospital did not use feather pillows and the windows were all shut. The nurse cleared the feathers all away and went back to work. The lady felt it was a very clear sign from the Angels that they had heard her prayers and were giving her a sign they were working with her. So she said thank you and just at that moment the nurse had come back into the room let out a shout and there in the middle of the floor was some more feathers! Wishing you all millions of Angel Blessings. For more details contact Diane on; Mob - 07968962395 Email: diane4angels@aol.com

Max is a lovely little dog who arrived with us through no fault of his own. He’s a lively wee terrier looking for an owner with knowledge of his breed who can give him the training and love he deserves. Max is a friendly boy who has had some basic training but he needs help learning how to walk on his lead as he gets very excited when he goes out. Max does not care for cats or small animals but he could possibly be rehomed with another canine companion following a successful introduction at the centre.

Name: Kiki Age: 5 years Gender: Female Breed: Domestic Short Hair

Kiki came in as a heavily pregnant stray and now that her kittens have been rehomed, she is looking for a forever home for herself. She is very friendly and loves to be petted, especially if she knows you will be bringing her food.

If you’re interested in rehoming any of these animals, you can download and complete a pre-homing questionnaire on the Scottish SPCA website and bring it with you when visiting our Ayrshire Rescue and Rehoming Centre. The centre is open from 10am 4pm seven days a week.

Name: Freddie Age: Unknown Gender: Male Breed: Ferret

Freddie is a cheeky boy who is looking for an experienced owner. He is a typical lively ferret but he has not been handled very much so needs an owner that is confident enough to work with him on this. Ferrets are sociable animals so Freddie will need a new home where he will get lots of attention from his new family or will be introduced to other ferrets for company. They are also very good escape artists and therefore any potential new owner would have to have a secure hutch and run.

QUICK QUIZ!

Name: Dexter Age: Unknown Gender: Male Breed: Rat

What is the name of the Snowman in Frozen?

Matt is a lovely lad who arrived in our Dexter was found straying in a garden before arriving in our care. He is quite scared of people most of the time and does not seem to have been handled much. Most small animals do come round to being picked up with daily handling and this is something any potential new owner will need to be prepared for. Rats are very intelligent little animals and they can also become quite attached to their owners. Dexter would be best suited to an owner who has owned rats before.

Found in Chile, they are known for their extremely painful stings, hence the common name cow killer or cow ant! Black and white specimens are sometimes known as panda ants due to their hair coloration resembling that of the Chinese giant panda! The Panda Ant!

That’s because for the next month or so, both the BBC and ITV will be broadcasting the World Cup from Brazil, the sport’s biggest and most prestigious competition. And although British hopes rest fairly and squarely on an unfancied England side, you can bet your bottom dollar that the nation will still be gripped to the screen. Perhaps the men in white will do better in Soccer Aid 2014 (Sunday, ITV, 6pm), which has

PICK OF THE WEEK

"Thanks to UNICEF for asking me to manage the Rest of the World at Soccer Aid on Sunday June 8 at Old Trafford", said Mourinho when his participation was announced. "I'm looking forward to beating Robbie Williams' and Big Sam’s England team and raising money for UNICEF.” England are leading in the head-to-head so far, having been beaten just once, in 2010, on penalties. That match raised almost £3million, while last year’s raised a record £4.9million – which is

pretty good going in austerity Britain. But can the figure be beaten this time around? The fact that the UK Government will be matching the donations made by the public should certainly help. We’ll have to wait and see… Now 40, Robbie has hung up his boots and is acting as assistant manager this time around. "Soccer Aid returns for the fifth time in June and I admit there are scores to settle," says the Robster. "Leading the England team, I will be making sure we defend that trophy against Rest of the World. There’s never been a better time for us to show our support for UNICEF.”

On the ball Kirsty Gallacher and Dermot O'Leary.

The Smart Girls Guide to...

BBQs With summer coming, there is nothing better than throwing some meat on the barbie. There seems to be a stigma with barbecues being a “man thing”, and that “real men barbecue”. Enough! Here is a few foodie tips to show the guys how it’s done. Ladies, grab the tongs and sausages and get the barbie cranking! Marinade the meat for a few hours or overnight. This will let the flavour soak right in. Try soy sauce, lemon, garlic and olive oil. Pair flavourings with the meat you are cooking to compliment the flavours. If you are cooking pork chops, whip up an apple salsa. Lamb kebabs go great with a mint raita. For beef burgers, a simple homemade tomato sauce will be enough.

Wrapping food in tin foil will retain natural moisture and flavour. For those aiming

for a slimmer summer, seal chicken or fish in an envelope with lemon and herbs for a tasty feast. Barbecues aren’t all about meat, don’t forget about the veggies! Asparagus is yummy grilled, and corn on the cob too. Buy the corn in its ‘husk’ which makes it easier to grill. Halloumi cheese is another top pick. Make up some halloumi, cheese, peppers and onion skewers and grill, turning ever so often. Lay out bowls of olives and crisps and dips. Cucumber and carrot crudites with houmous or sour cream and chives is another top choice. The meat might take a while to cook, so it’s good to have some snacks to keep your guests going! Throw together a big batch of salad and don’t forget the hot-dog and burger buns!

Marriage or mortgage?

Marriage as in institution in past generations was the essential beginnings of a fruitful life, however modern day romantics, are now believing that the rock in which all relationships are based on is that first tentative step on the property market.

Sheila’s Wheels Home Insurance conducted a poll of 1000 people married within the last five years on their marriage and it found “the average wedding costs nearly £18,000 pounds and the big day usually leaves the “happy couple” in as much as £3000 pound debt following the nuptials.”

looking to purchase their first home can do so with as little as five percent of their mortgage. With the Scottish Government offering to give you 20% percent on top of that, allowing you to get that first step on the property market. Sheila’s Wheels also found that in the process of arranging a marriage, the happy couple would “argue at least once a week” and one in nine couples admitted “they nearly separated due to wedding-related money woes.”

Between the ages of 25 and 34 Sheila’s Wheels found that a couple would chose a home first but also that they were the most likely to borrow from friends and family as well as risk financial security by taking out credit cards to help with

the big day.

The wedding market is worth in the region of £10 billion pounds however in the last eighteen months has seen a noticeable drop and according to John Stevenson an analyst at Peer Hunt “economic reasons are a strong factor.” Mr Stevenson went on the say that “World Cup years or when there are football (tournaments) in June there are fewer weddings.” Moss Bros, who hires out suits, shirts and shoes for weddings and formal occasions admitted that a late Easter which is traditionally the start of the wedding season, could

also have a detrimental effect on weddings, and cause a drop in the hiring of wedding attire.

Pumpkin Keys

PROPERTY “Billion pounds” Zoopla to float on stock market Property website Zoopla has announced plans to sell shares on the London Stock Exchange.

The 40 million visitor per month property website recorded revenues of £38.3m in the six months to 31st, a 26% percent increase from the previous year, with operating profits up 15% percent to £16.2 million. Majority owner Daily Mail & General Trust (DMGT) have estimated that Zoopla could be worth in the region of 1 billion pounds when floated. By

It resembles a lair for a meglomaniac James Bond villain and also boasts some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet...and it can be yours for a mere £65million dollars. Pumpkin Keys off the Miami coast, lies less than ten minutes away (in a helicopter) from the centre of Miami

and the island also can lay claim to a private airstrip and its own protected marina.

Created with the ideal of getting away from it all, Pumpkin Keys still has the space for twenty of so ships, for when you decide to have a billionaire party and the helicopter ride just wont do.

Luckily there are running water, telephone lines, satellite television, just in case you’re feeling a tad too Robinson Crusoe, alienated from your fellow man.

A spokesman for Sothersby’s International Realty said of the spectacular piece of land “Pumpkin Keys represents one of the most exceptional opportunities in real estate today, anywhere in the world, it offers the unique opportunity for privacy, while still being part of the Ocean Reef community.”

Zoopla also includes the websites PrimeLocation, SmartNewHomes and HomesOverseas, currently it advertises 90% percent of residential property listings and is the second largest property website after Rightmove. Zoopla chief executive Alex Chesterman “I am very proud of what the team has achieved to date and we are incredibly excited about the opportunities ahead to continue to

grow our brands and business.” DMGT have plans to relinquish some of their stake which at the present moment stands at 52.6% percent however they have no intentions of losing their power as largest shareholder. The property website generates income by charging subscription fees to estate agents, letting agents and developers who use the site to list their properties. Hazardously, however, is the fear of another housing boom in Britain and an increase in property prices which puts the economic recovery in jeapordy. In London alone house prices have risen by ten percent in one year. Bank of England Governer Mark Carney said that the British housing market has “deep deep structural problems, especially the insufficient construction of new homes.” By

Housing market may face ‘Natural Correction’ to prices Nationwide building society has warned the London housing market may face a “natural correction”. Graham Beale, the mutual’s chief executive, has said the market place is slowing down. It comes as Nationwide reported its best ever year, with a four-fold rise in pre-tax annual profits to £677m, against £168m a year earlier. Mr Beale said “at some point buyers just start saying no.” Mortgage lending was increased by Nationwide by 31% to £28.1bn in

the year to 4 April on the back of the recovery in the housing market. The number of mortgages it advanced to borrowers with a deposit of 10% or less of a property’s purchase value which would account for a majority of first-time buyers - remained low, at 2.4% of its total lending for the year. The most recent figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) announced that average property values increased by 8% in the year to March to £252,000, down slightly from the 9.2% rise recorded a month earlier.

Ray Boulger, senior technical manager at mortgage brokers John Charcol, said the rate of increase in house prices in London was “clearly unsustainable”. “There are signs that the London market is topping out,” he added. “By which I mean that the rate of increase in house prices is likely to slowdown. “What we will see over the next year is the big difference in house prices in London and elsewhere will narrow considerably as prices elsewhere begin to pick up.” By

Institute of Advanced Motorists reveals UK’s fastest speeders and should we be angry? As part of a study into the fastest recorded speeders of the the past 12 months by archaic drivers group the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), it has been revealed that the record speeding ticket in the past 12 months was clocked up on the M25 outside Kent at a blistering 149mph.

The 149mph ticket was issued on a stretch of road with a limit of 70mph, the over all difference between the posted limit and the speed hit by the driver was 79mph. While such a speed may, rightly so, be considered reprehensible in a 30mph zone or a 50mph zone, is it really so dangerous to achieve high speeds on a three lane motorway? While the IAM and traffic police would say yes, this doesn’t seem to be the case elsewhere in the world. For example, in Germany, a shining example of sensible speed limits, the recommended speed limit on dual carriage ways and the Autobahn (motorway) is 130kph or 80mph, with no actual restriction on the top speed a motorist is allowed to travel at apart from increased insurance liability for any accidents which might occur while travelling at speed. To many within the anti speed community, mainly made up of IAM members and council officials who see fines as a way of boosting their income for the year, this disregard

for set speed limits displayed by the German authorities must result in a huge mortality rate on the Autobahn, if their own rhetoric is to be believed. However, this simply isn’t the case, as there are only a small percentage of accidents in comparison to the length and density of the Autobahn system, which is third behind China and the USA. It is therefore surprising that in Britain with a much less

complex motorway system that we are still subjected not only to a lower maximum speed limit nationally but also a large number of roads which are capable of handling high speed traffic being limited to 60 and sometimes even 50mph. The anti speed lobbyist and lawmakers also seem to be looking at the speed limits on our motorways from an antiquated viewpoint, where in they still envision the British road system being populated by Morris Minors and Austin Minis which were scarcely capable and dangerous at speeds of 70 mph and above. Many of our speed limits were in fact first set when this was the case, and the laws and lawmakers thinking have not been updated since. This is despite the fact that Britain has one of the biggest appetites in Europe for new cars, vehicles which are designed to easily reach, surpass and handle well, in excess of 70mph. This attitude is exemplified by the statement released by IAM Chief Executive Simon Best, who in an

In Scotland we aren’t as spoiled for approved green lane off roading options as our neighbours to the south thanks to the lack of ‘right of passage’ laws, however, with a little planning and forethought there are a myriad of options for the intrepid mud slogging enthusiast in Scotland.

MOBILITY I BATHING I TOILETING DAILY LIVING AIDS I HOUSEHOLD

attempt at scaremongering said that “149 mph equates to travelling two and a half miles in a minute” going on to further the IMA’s anti speed agenda saying “if anything goes wrong at that speed, you’re unlikely to walk away and you’re a grave danger to the innocent road users around you.”

So the question is this, why must groups such as the IAM, DVLA, VOSA and the ministry for transport demonize speed to such an extent when clearly the roads, the cars and the public at large are capable of handling it?

Should we as a driving nation continue to be terrorized by the threat of fines, points and driving bans from doing what the car manufacturers know is capable and what is proven to work in Germany? Or should we finally take control of the roads which we as tax payers expend a large portion of our hard earned pay on? By

First off, for the off roader who wants to shun approved trails where there’s often a fee attached, there are a number of different ways to get some mud on your windows without having to pay homage to the demi god of health and safety.

In addition to this, the off roading society members will be more than happy to advise anyone looking to take to the road less travelled by giving you contact details for local land owners who are not adverse to allowing the odd enthusiast onto their land for a little bit of mudding. For those of us who are looking to get their kicks in a prepared environment there are a huge number of off roading centres all across Scotland, all of which offer the option for customers to rent a vehicle for the day, which may be ideal for those out there who are either mulling the possibility of getting their own 4x4 or don’t want to take their own vehicle into harms way. So for those who are looking for something a little different to do this summer, off roading might be for you, whether you have your own mean machine and a way with words to convince a local land owner to give you access to their land or if you just want to play for a day in the mud and the mire, there are so many options out there. So happy mudding and hopefully none of you get stuck too deeply!

Countdown to Goodwood Festival of Speed

Today marks 25 days until the biggest motoring event in the British calendar that isn’t a series race kicks off, and naturally I mean the Goodwood Festival of Speed which is running from the 26th to the 29th of June.

The festival which is described as the ‘largest motoring garden party in the world’ promises to be as over the top and fantastic as usual. Attracting the automotive version of the Ascott races crowd, the festival will be bringing together the great and the good of the motoring world along side the latest concepts from the most prestigious marques who all make an effort to see and be seen at this, the most special event in the calendar. This years theme is ‘Addicted to Winning – The Unbeatable Champions of Motor Sport’. This 2014 theme will celebrate the legendary drivers and riders, teams and manufacturers, who have swept all before them in their sport. Tickets are still available but as usual demand is high so get yours soon if you intend of going.

Off roading in Scotland NEW SHOWROOM The first option is simply heading for the Highlands, according to the Scottish off roading society there are in fact quite a large number of trails, byways and fjords that are perfectly legal for you to tackle in order for you to challenge your off roading skills.

Rain dampens Tigers progress

ready to roar! Final preparations for the Commonwealth Games have been completed at the National Stadium weeks before the Commonwealth Games are due to commence. By

Gregg Kelly

With the opening of the Commonwealth Games approaching on the 23rd of July it was feared that there might be a hiccup whilst trying to get Hampden ready for the athletics, however those fears were allayed when the stadium was presented to the press.

officially recognised athletics track.

With the work being finalised the football stadium has now been completely transformed into a fully fledged multi sport venue. Hampden will be at the centre point for almost 50 track and field events, with more than a 1000 athletes competing over a seven day period. Hampden Park will roar again.

The park now sits on top of 1000 base panels supported by more than 6,000 steel stilts, to accommodate the new addition several rows of seats have had to be removed from the bottom of the stadium.

The ambitious plan was to raise the stadium’s track by two metres and add to the width and length of the running track to make it and authentic and

The stadium originally constructed in 1903, got a major revamp in the 1990’s but lacked the cutting edge to bring it forward into the 21st century, although no longer the biggest stadium in the world, Hampden Park can create an atmosphere like no other when at capacity.

With the crowd now even closer to the action it is hoped that they will roar their home grown heroes to victory at the Games. With an expected TV audience of one billion people, its great that the old

stadium got a slight facelift, to show her in all her glory and pomp. She’s more than a hundred years old you know. Chief Executive David Grevemberg said “The spectacular transformation of Hampden Park from iconic football stadium to world-class athletics venue is an achievement of which Glasgow and Scotland can be justifiably proud.” He continued. “This is a world first solution in a great venue, creating an excellent sporting field of play and we can’t wait for the elite athletes of the Commonwealth to come and experience the thrill of competing here. With 40,000 people roaring the cream of the athletics world, in an atmosphere unlike anything you’ll have heard before....Come on Scotland we’re ready.

Ladies, say goodbye to your husbands for the next 4 weeks. You now have 28 days to spend spend spend whilst us men are laid up with that 4 yearly virus – World Cupitis . Football is coming home, the 12th of June sees Brazil open the tournament on home soil to Croatia. Expectations are high for Brazil, so expect them to make their mark early the tournament with a comfortable win. Brazil -1 at odds of 1/1 are too attractive. Double your money in the first game. The following day sees Mexico take on Cameroon, and a 1-1 draw at 11/2 is a great price, but at small stakes. The 13th June sees the first “big” tie of the tournament – Spain v Holland. Two attacking and technically gifted teams, there is bound to be goals, and I see Spain edging out the Dutch. Take Spain to win and both teams to score at 19/5, almost 4/1 for a Spain win, it’s not often those odds are available. The 7th June sees Cirrus Des Aigles compete in the Investec Coronation cup. Currently trading at 1/1, that is great odds considering his form, and with no entry (at time of print) for Ruler of the World, I can’t see anything else being first past the post. By

The 38 year old who has been compared to Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp for his attacking style and his passion for free flowing football will cost the Parkhead club in the region of £500,000 pounds in compensation. If the deal concludes with Deila being unveiled as Celtic manager, there will be a feeling of optimism amongst the Celtic fans as they approach a tentative point of the summer, with the Champions League qualifiers beckoning.

The recent wet weather around the West of Scotland cannot have had much more of an impact than it has on Glasgow’s speedway club who haven’t been able to turn a wheel over the past two weekends. Having already suffered a couple of call offs due to wet Sunday weather, the Tigers have more recently been forced to additionally postpone Premier League clashes against Edinburgh and Scunthorpe and now have a fixture headache to fit these into an already packed calendar.

Next up for the Tigers will be home and away Knock Out Cup matches against London club Rye House, the team who eliminated Glasgow from the same tournament a year ago. Tigers supporters are hopeful that the home leg of this cup tie (Sunday, 15th June) will mark the track return of superstar French racer Dimitri Berge who has been injured since a spectacular crash at end of April.

Allegedly, Deila’s agent, Tore Pederson was seen at Celtic Park on Wednesday for talks with Celtic supremo Peter Lawell. If concluded Deila will formally become the 17th permanent manager in Celtic’s 126 year history. The young Norwegian’s career has seen eyes and ears around Europe stand up and take notice due to his studious nature and the impressive turnaround of Stromsgodset. Celtic have previous dealings with Stromsgodset after purchasing the very impressive Stefan Johansen from Stromsgodset in the January transfer window. Deila has regularly been called the best young manager in Scandinavian football and has managed to consistently retain the quality of his teams even after selling best players(not unlike Neil Lennon). Last year Deila won the Norwegian league with a team with an average age of just 23 and prefers to mould a team using youth as its base. Peter Lawell has still refused to comment on any rumours, however sources from Stromgodset have signified that Celtic’s original compensation offer was unacceptable and would need to be increased for them to allow their manager to leave. With both Celtic and Stromgodset facing Champions League qualifiers in the near future, neither will want to lose ground in the race to secure their manager. By

The game finished 3-0 although Glenafton fought with pride, coming close a couple of times to pulling one back. Hurlford romp to first Junior Scottish Cup Final

Hurlford FC made short work of Ayrshire rivals Glenafton to claim their first Junior Scottish Cup Final in a one sided match at Kilmarnock’s Rugby Park stadium.

With the game being billed as a chance for the two teams to exact some revenge and with both teams featuring players who have previously played for the other the stage was set for a thrilling end of the season match. Until it wasn’t.

Glenafton seemed to start with promise, and passed the ball well, but three minutes in after gaining possession, Hurlford galloped up the field, only being stopped by Ryan Chesney downing Ross Robertson in the box for a penalty. Up stepped ex St Mirren and Ayr United forward Steven Kean who

coolly dispatched the penalty setting Hurlford on their way to a memorable village cup double. Hurlford United lifted the Junior Scottish Cup while in the same season their amateur cohorts Hurlford Thistle won the amateur cup. A historic double for the small village.

Glenafton nearly levelled the match after the penalty, with Alan Kinney coming close only to be denied by a point blank save from Hurlford keeper Ally Brown.
