CARNEGIE TO HOPKINS COME AND SEE WHY FOOD BANKS AREN’T A “BIG CON” Andrew Carnegie, local food bank organizer and social activist, is calling on Katy Hopkins to come to Glasgow and see why food banks aren’t a “big con” as Ms Hopkins stated on the BBC last week.
Andrew who spent the end of last year and the beginning of 2014 running a food bank service is challenging Hopkins to a public debate over her comments on the BBC, however when the Glasgow News contacted Ms Hopkins she declined to clarify on her comments and justify her view, citing contractual issues. Ms Hopkins has in columns, described the massive growth in the numbers of people who have had to resort to using food banks is because “we are happy to feed the dirty habits of people who are perfectly happy to live life on the take”. Ms Hopkins also claims in one article that “people are playing the system because it is there to be had”.

Andrew who ran an unsolicited food bank service which provided food and basic necessities to those who are most in need in the city is both shocked and disgusted at Hopkins comments and wants to take Hopkins on a tour to see the cities poorer areas and show her sights “that will shake her to the core”. Andrew told the Glasgow News that some of the sights which he saw while delivering food to those in need were “deeply disturbing” and that in some of the places he went to the people were living in circumstances similar to those in “shanty towns”. Mr Carnegie described Ms Hopkins as a “mouthpiece of the far right and the empire of evil” and also spoke about how she “promotes what they (the far right) presents”. Mr Carnegie describes his offer of showing Katie the instances of poverty in the city as a “way to save her from herself” Despite the current controversy surrounding the issue of food banks, Andrew has told The Glasgow News how the previous drive was a massive success and that some of the principal donors which include Smithy Croft school and the Wellshot Dairy have already pledged their support for the next drive which is planned to commence in July.

23,000 People Use Glasgow foodbanks in last six months With the announcement this week that one in five children in Scotland are living in poverty and with a further 65,000 to fall below the breadline before 2020, and with one in seven children unable to wear a winter coat on their shoulders, what condition is the world’s finances in that this can happen in western civilization? Yet in the same week, Forbes Magazine announced that there are now more billionaires in the world than ever before, with 1645 people having £3.82 trillion pounds of the entire world currency. It truly is as Charles Dickens said in his classic literature; A Tale of Two Cities “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”. With the Bedroom Tax, and Atos Means Test policies, systematically destroying the hardest hit parts of Scottish society, a campaign has been born, the “Scotland Outlook” campaign which aims to help the hardest hit in society, be it welfare reforms, rising gas and electricity prices, cost of living, job insecurity or even stagnant wages. The campaign has urged people to join the fight against poverty. Created with no political affiliation and born solely to bring need, to the people who are facing crisis and an unknown future. A whole host of
charities have combined forces to create awareness and make a difference. Run jointly by Macmillan, Shelter Scotland, Oxfam, Alzheimer Scotland, Children’s Hospice Association Scotland(CHAS), Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG), the Poverty Alliance and the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations(SCVO).
The aim is to highlight the “Humanitarian Crisis engulfing Scotland, and save future generations from hardship and poverty. In the last six months alone 23,000 people came to food banks looking for help, last week in Glasgow, for the first time in its history Glasgow City Mission had no food to offer those in need, not a scrap of food left on its hallowed shelves. At the present minute, it has been reported that 870,000 people in Scotland are living in poverty, almost a fifth of the entire population.
Martin Sime, chief executive of the SCVO, said “With nearly a million people in Scotland living in poverty, we have a humanitarian crisis on our hands and we need everyone’s help to tackle it. “Thousands of people are turning to food banks, struggling to heat their homes, and to clothe themselves and their children. It’s not right.”
Politicians in Scotland are too busy squabbling over the independence question and missing out on a more important question, what about the
children? What about feeding the constituents that you are squabbling over?
With millions and millions being spent on the campaign to break away from the UK and millions and millions being spent convincing people to stay with the UK, could the money be better spent helping the most vulnerable members of society. Ewan Gurr, Scotland development officer for the Trussell Trust, said January had been its busiest ever month. It was predicted in December that the trust would have helped 55,000 people by the end of this financial year. He said that figure had already been exceeded, with 55,232 people using a food bank to date. There have even been instances of people visiting food banks and asking the volunteers for “kettle boxes” food boxes without rice or pasta, due to an inability to afford heating or gas bills. It has also been reported that people have even had to return food parcels through an inability to afford to cook the dry food in the parcel box. All this in a week were the richest man, Bill Gates, was announced at the worlds richest man with a fortune of £45.5 billion pounds. It is well known that Bill Gates and his wife are strong believers in philanthropy and making the world a better place, through charitable donations and helping the hardest hit people in society.

More than 1 in 6 people
in Scotland say they borrowed to pay for food last month
15.5 percent of Scottish residents said they borrowed money to pay their food bill in February, this figure has increased by fifty percent since July 2013. In order to pay their food bill last month, 15.5 percent of people in Scotland said they had to borrow money this is equivalent to more than 0.8 million Scottish residents.
According to the latest study by debt advice and solutions provider Debt Advisory Centre Scotland, 15.5 percent of adults in the country
revealed they borrowed cash to pay for groceries in February 2014. This is equivalent to more than one in six people, or 823,608.
While this figure is worrying in itself, what is even more of a concern is that it has risen by half in the last eight months. When asked in July 2013 whether they had borrowed money to pay a grocery bill in the previous
month, 10 percent of respondents said they had. This means the number of Scottish adults who appear to be struggling to pay for food has risen by more than a quarter of a million in less than a year.
Across the UK as a whole, 18.7 percent of adults, equivalent to nearly nine and a half million people, revealed they had to borrow cash to
pay for groceries in February. This is three times more than in July 2013.
Debt Advisory Centre Scotland spokesman Ian Williams said: “It’s a real concern that so many people in Scotland are struggling to pay for something as essential as groceries. What’s even more worrying is that this figure has climbed so steeply in just eight months.”
“Food is a necessity that every household requires, and borrowing to pay for it could be a sign of a serious financial problem. If the reason they’re struggling is because they’re prioritising repaying their debts, it might be time for people to seek help and advice from debt experts.”

Students win £20,000 prize at Buffaloes to give Childline a helping hand Future City Glasgow hackathon Young Glasgow developers have scooped a £20,000 prize as part of a Future City Glasgow contest to foster innovation and creative talent.
The computer science students won the prize after an intensive 48hr hackathon where teams competed to devise new technology to enhance Public Safety. Eleven teams attended the event which ran from 6pm on Friday, February 21, to 9pm the following Sunday. The judges were impressed by all the entries but particularly by the MSGlasgow team which created a messaging system for non urgent contact with the emergency services. It uses social media to send short text messages, photos and the caller’s exact location to the police, fire or health providers. The services will also be able to respond to messages and use the platform to send targeted public announcements to a certain demographic or people living/working in certain areas. Ten of the 11 member winning team were students at the University

of Glasgow. Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Future City Glasgow, congratulated the students on their success. He said: “Glasgow is proud to be a city of innovation with a great pool of creative talent. The Future City Glasgow hackathons are encouraging and supporting young people with the knowledge and skills to develop exciting new technologies and hopefully go on to start new businesses. The MSGlasgow team in particular demonstrated great potential and I congratulate them on their win.” Josh McGhee, 20, MSGlasgow team leader, is in his penultimate year of a computer science course at the university.
He said: “I think everyone was shocked when our team was named as winners. We couldn’t believe we’d won. The hackathon was very intensive. We worked incredibly hard all weekend but we now have a prototype. This win is a massive thing for us. It will really open doors. We’re already in discussions with the emergency services about taking the concept forward.” The Public Safety hackathon was the first of four – future themes will include energy, health and transport. The second hackathon will take place from March 21 to 23. Register at http:// open.glasgow.gov.uk

Its hard to escape that spider
14th March - 28th March 2014 | Glasgow News 9
Most people when faced with a deadly spider would immediately turn on their heels and flee especially the deadly Brazilian Wandering Spider. A single bite has been known to kill a fully grown man. Rather peculiarly one of the side effects of experiencing the spiders fangs sinking into your body is priapism. Which is of course the effect of having a constant erection, and it can last upwards of four hours. The Brazilian Jumping Spider also known as the banana spider or the armed spider has been in the news lately after a family bought a bunch of bananas only to find a live spider
sac connected to it and it subsequently burst open allowing hundreds of the poisonous spiders to escape. Scientists at the Medical College of Georgia believe that the species has the power to alleviate erectile dysfunction. Dr Kenia Nunes, a physiologist at the college, said: ‘The venom of the Phoneutria nigriventer spider is a very
rich mixture of several molecules. These molecules are called toxins, and then we have various toxins in this venom with different activity.” Dr Nunes continued, “because of this, when a human is bitten by this spider, we can observe many different symptoms including priapism, a condition in which the penis is continually erect. Other side-effects on top of the long-painful erections
include loss of muscle control, severe pain, difficulty breathing and if its victim is not treated with anti-venom, could lead to death due to oxygen deprivation.” But its unusual effects could be used to treat sexual dysfunction in both men and women, according to Dr. Nunes. “We found the toxin responsible [for the erections of flacid rats] and performed experiments
using hypertensive rats which have severe erectile dysfunction. The toxin was able to normalise the erectile dysfunction in these animals.” She continued “The spider’s toxin worked in a different way to drugs such as Viagra though and that is good because some patients don’t respond to conventional therapy.” By

£20million Boost To City’s Economy With the curtain closed on Glasgow Film Festival for another year, it has been revealed that film, broadcast and other media production in the city brought £19.74 million pounds to Glasgow’s economy. With the figure being almost identical to the previous year (£20.15m) it shows that Glasgow is a hub of activity in the film and television industry. The previous year witnessed Glasgow host film productions featuring Hollywood stars Brad Pitt, Halle Berry and Scarlett Johansson. Previous years have also seen Glasgow host production of pivotal scenes in the finale of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. Some of the films that have been filmed in the city throughout the previous few years are World War Z ft Brad Pitt, Cloud Atlas ft Halle Berry, Under The Skin ft Scarlett Johansson, Filth with home-grown James McAvoy, Neds, The Angels Share and Fast and the Furious have partially been filmed in the city. Sixteen year old boy fights for life after another weekend of drug misery A sixteen year old boy, is currently in intensive care after consuming a rogue tablet at a house party in Coatbridge. Jack Blades is thought to have taken a “Mortal Kombat” tablet at the weekend. The pill was linked to the death of 17 year old Regane McColl last month who collapsed in Glasgow’s Arches nightclub. Promising student, Jack, who attended Coatbridge College was rushed to Monklands hospital on Saturday at 11:30 pm alongside another boy who had taken the deadly tablet. The second boy was released a short time later whereas Jack is still in intensive care. He is said to be stable but in a serious condition.
The “Mortal Kombat” tablets which have been linked to a number of incidents where people have been admitted to hospital, contains the chemical compound PMA. Five times stronger than MDMA, which is usually the chemical found in ecstasy, PMA takes longer to effect the body and people tend to believe that the pills are weak and end up taking another one. Both then kick in and its similar to the effect of taking ten ecstasy tablets at the same time. Sometimes proving deadly.
An NHS Lanarkshire spokeswoman said: “Anyone who has taken ecstasy - particularly the one described as Mortal Kombat - and who is feeling unwell, or who knows someone who has taken this type of drug in the past few hours, should attend or contact

their local hospital for treatment and advice.” A sixteen year old male has been arrested in connection with the incident and was due to appear in Airdrie Sheriff Court on Tuesday. Det Ch Insp Paul Livingstone said: “We are continuing to work with our partner agencies, including health officials and medical staff, in connection with this investigation. “At this time our priority is to ensure that everyone who was at the house party is safe and well and officers are carrying out extensive inquiries to trace everyone involved. “Further to previous warnings, I would again strongly advise people to avoid illicit drugs as their exact
content is unknown and can contain dangerous chemicals. “Users must be aware of these dangers and understand the devastating effect they can have.” The drug PMA has been linked to at least 20 deaths across Britain and last summer claimed the lives of seven people in two months in Scotland. Last month the Arches nightclub raised it minimum age policy to 21 after Regane McColl collapsed and died and others were taken to hospital after taking the red “Mortal Kombat” pills.

Mr Key has said that the current flag represented a period of history from which the country has moved on, saying: “It’s my belief... that the design of the New Zealand flag symbolises a colonial and postcolonial era whose time has passed. The flag remains dominated by the Union Jack in a way that we ourselves are no longer dominated by the United Kingdom.” One new design which has popular support is that of the All Blacks silver fern on a black background Mr Key has said of the design which has become a symbol of New Zealand in the athletic world “the silver fern on a black background a distinctive and uniquely New Zealand identity”. Pupils from East Renfrewshire’s secondary schools have been providing local senior citizens with a free beauty boost – and improving their skills into the bargain. Members of a local group for elderly people have been receiving free treatments from senior students taking part in the council’s hair and beauty vocational programme. It has proved a real hit with the ladies who’ve benefited. And they have been full of praise for the pupils’ professionalism and standard of work. The council’s popular vocational programme provides senior pupils with the chance to gain skills and
experience, with an eye to future job opportunities and meeting the needs of employers. It offers a range of subjects from construction to horticulture, in partnership with colleges, universities and employers. Courses in hair and beauty are provided as part of the programme, and pupils train in a special salon, the Style Academy, that has been kitted out with professional equipment and created in the former janitor’s house at Crookfur Primary.
Last November, members of the Seniors Together group run by Voluntary Action East Renfrewshire got the chance to visit the Style Academy and enjoy free manicures and hand and arm massages.

There are pupils from each of East Ren’s high schools on the programme – Williamwood, St Ninian’s, Mearns Castle, Woodfarm, Barrhead, Eastwood and St Luke’s, as well as Isobel Mair School, which is for pupils with additional support needs.

Stroke Association dismayed Six people reported dead and sixty four injured in New York at Scottish public’s poor building explosion stroke awareness The Stroke Association is dismayed that over a quarter of the public who took part in a recent poll do not know what a stroke is. The charity asked over 1,200 people where in the body a stroke occurs in the lead up to Brain Awareness Week and were shocked to discover that 15 percent of those asked wrongly thought that a stroke happened in the heart and 6 percent thought that a stroke happened in the chest. Elspeth Molony, Deputy Director of the Stroke Association Scotland said:
“A stroke is a brain attack. It happens when blood circulation to the brain fails. One in six of us will have a stroke so it is crucial that we increase awareness so more people understand what a stroke is and how to recognise the symptoms of stroke.”
The charity also asked people what they would do if they thought someone was having a stroke. The Stroke Association was pleased to find that over ninety percent of participants in the poll knew to treat stroke as a medical emergency and to dial 999.
Elspeth also went on to say:
“While it is reassuring that the vast majority of the people we polled knew what to do if someone was having a stroke, we are concerned that with over a quarter of people polled not understanding what a stroke is they may not recognise the symptoms. The FAST test identifies the most common symptoms of a stroke in three easy to recognise categories - Facial weakness, Arm weakness and Speech problems. If you see any one of these three signs, it’s time to call 999.
Stroke can happen to anyone both young and old and its impact can be life-changing. For those who know what a stroke is and what the FAST message is please spread the word, tell your friends and family about it and together we can help reduce the impact of Scotland’s third biggest killer.” For more information on stroke and support available contact the Stroke Helpline on: 0303 3033 100.
Two multi storey apartment buildings collapsed in New York last week due to a gas explosion. The gas explosions which rocked the neighbourhood of East Harlem early last Tuesday morning levelled two apartment buildings, resulting in the deaths of six people and injuring sixty four. The explosion also damaged nearby buildings and blew the windows out of buildings in the surrounding neighbourhood. Fire and rescue crews were unable to begin searching the debris for survivors until Wednesday night as the blaze was so intense, requiring fire crews to douse the rubble for almost 24 hours before it was deemed safe
for search and rescue operations to begin. The gas company responsible for the gas lines, Con Edison, says that they only received a report of about a possible gas leak from a local resident fifteen minutes before the explosion and that they had no time to react to the warning. Initially many New Yorkers feared the blast was a terrorist attack as it was heard across the city and the plume of smoke was visible for miles around. However Mayor Bill de Blasio allayed fears saying that the incident was “a tragedy of the worst kind” and that “no foul play was suspected”.

North Korean oil tanker runs Libyan naval blockade, destination unclear, North Korea disowns ship A North Korean oil tanker has sailed out of the rebel held port of Sidra in Libya, defying the governments block on the export of oil from rebel controlled areas. The “Morning Glory” which is registered in North Korea is thought to have taken on 234,000 barrels of crude oil at the port of Sidra before attempting to evade the Libyan naval blockade on the port. Libyan naval spokesman Habib al-Amin has said that the navy fired on the vessel but was unable to disable it.
North Korean spokesman Jon Ki Choi has said that the North Korean government revoked the Morning Glory’s registration after it learned of the incident. This incident is fueling speculation that North Korea is funding the Libyan separatist groups, who have occupied three major ports since July of last year, however North Korea renounces all claims that they are supporting the rebel forces. The ships current final destination is still unknown, however the Libyan government has requested support from the Egyptian government in order to stop the run away tanker. By
Last week a bank robbery took place at a branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland in Edinburgh, where detectives believe the robber made his getaway in a waiting “black hack” taxi.
The robbery which amounted to a four figure sum which has not been disclosed was reported to have occurred at 9:30 am on Monday the 3rd of last week. The man allegedly threatened a member of staff and demanded money, which he then stashed in an orange Tesco carrier bag. It is believed that the suspect got into a waiting black cab and headed west. Police Scotland have issued a statement saying: “At no time was a weapon used or seen by staff or customers,
but the suspect was still able to make off with thousands of pounds.” Police Scotland have also issued a description of the suspect stating: “He was described as white, in his late 20s to early 30s, 6ft 4ins tall and was wearing a black beanie hat, dark-coloured waist-length jacket and brown trousers.” Det Insp Rory Hamilton, of Police Scotland, said: “We believe the male may have arrived and departed from the scene in the same black cab and we are in the process of speaking to the city’s taxi companies as part of our investigation.” “Any drivers who believe they may have taken this man to and from the bank is also asked to get in touch.”

Assad Starving refugee camp
Syrian leader Assad’s regime using “starvation as a weapon of war” against Damascus refugee camp.
Pro Assad regime forces in Syria have been using starvation as a weapon against refugees in the Yarmouk district of Damascus. Those sheltering in Yarmouk are made up mostly of women, children, the elderly and infirm.
In a report released by Amnesty International the situation has been described as a “catastrophic humanitarian crisis” as families are being forced to “scavenge for weeds and roots in order to eat while under the threat of government sniper fire.”
The district has been under siege since December 2012, but since the 18th of January all access has been denied for people and organizations trying to deliver essential supplies such as food, water and basic medical matériel. Humanitarian organizations have also been refused access to the besieged refugee camp.
Recent figures procured by Amnesty International have indicated that around 128 civilians have died since the restrictions came into force in January. According to eyewitnesses in Yarmouk, most of those killed have died due to government sniper fire, starvation and illness. Philip Luther, Amnesty’s Middle East director said:
“Syrian forces are committing war crimes by using starvation of civilians as a weapon of war. The harrowing accounts of families having to resort to eating cats and dogs, and civilians attacked by snipers as they forage for food, have become all too familiar details of the horror story that has materialised in Yarmouk.” By

It has emerged that two of the passengers on the missing Malaysian Airlines flight were travelling under stolen passports. The two Iranian men who were reportedly travelling using false documents have are “not likely to be members of a terrorist group” according to Malaysian police chief Khalid Abu Bakar.
The men who travelled to Malaysia on their Iranian passports and switched to using a pair of stolen European passports are thought to have been trying to illegally migrate to Europe. One of the Iranian men Pouria Nour Mohammad Mehrdad, 18, was reportedly travelling to Germany.
Authorities believe that he was intending to migrate to Germany after speaking to his Mother who is resident in Frankfurt and was expecting to meet her son when he arrived.

Abusing Young Men In Parliament Nigel Evans former Tory deputy speaker of the house is in court this week over allegations of sexual assault on young men in Westminster.
Mr Evans was allegedly warned by colleagues to cease such behaviour on multiple occasions, however it is believed that Evans assumed that due to his position no one would issue a complaint against him.
BBC to argue for
licence fee increase The BBC has put forward a blue sky document in which it proposes to increase the licence fee through pegging it to the national inflation rate from 2020.
Mr Evans, the MP for Ribble Valley in Lancashire, is accused of two counts of indecent assault, six of sexual assault, and one of rape, the accusations date back from 2002 to last year. Mr Evans has been accused of using his position to force young men in Westminster into engaging in sexual acts as he had according to one minister “the power to make or break their careers”

The report commissioned by the BBC in order to investigate methods of increasing funding for the network suggested that the national TV licence fee be pegged to the rate of inflation instead of the current freeze in the cost of buying a licence which will run until 2016. There have also been allegations that the BBC has been conducting research into creating a paid subscription service. An allegation which the corporation strongly denies. “The report recommends that the
BBC pursue an inflationary licence fee increase with greater commercial revenue. No subscription model is recommended,” the corporation said a statement. These allegations come soon after the corporation announced that it will be axing the much maligned

The overall size of the UK economy will overtake it’s 2008 pre recession peak according to business lobby group the British Chamber of Commerce (BCC). The BCC thinks the second quarter, starting in April, will see GDP exceed the level seen at the start of 2008. Go-Rock in G On the 12th of April, venues across the picturesque coastal town of Gourock will play host to Go-Rock; a new not-for-profit festival that will provide a platform for Scotland’s up and coming acts to showcase their musical talents.
charity (Nordoff Robbins) provides up to 400 sessions of music therapy per week to children and adults living with serious mental and physical health challenges resulting from disability or illness. “At first I wasn’t planning on running the event to raise funds for charity, but I came across Nordoff-Robbins website. They do great work, and I decided that since making money wasn’t my main objective that it would make sense to donate any profits from the festival to help them. Music is such a big part of what they do.” An opportunity to gain some much needed exposure; whilst supporting a worthy cause like Nordoff-Robbins: the scores of talented young acts who have volunteered their services to festival organisers over the past months certainly aren’t lacking in motivation! All manner of bands and solo artists have been contacting Laura, in the lead up to the festival, in the hope of being included on GoRock’s programme. She cheerfully admits that the selection process was one particular headache she really didn’t mind having to deal with. “Most of the acts contacted us after seeing the festival advertised and we chose the ones we thought would fit in with what the festival was all about.”
The one day event is the brain child of Laura Seils, music student and founder of the record label BYmonster Records. She first came up with the idea of staging a music festival in Gourock whilst studying at a nearby college. “Gourock is an ideal location. Firstly, the name of the town provides a good title for the festival. Also, there are many music industry professionals who live in the area. It is fair to say that the area has a great musical history.” Festival founder and creative director
Laura Seils has thrown herself in to the role of creative director; Taking responsibility for booking the venues and bands, organising equipment, writing press releases, designing the website, liaising with the NordoffRobbins charity, organising fund raising initiatives and a whole host of other related tasks. In fact, she has even gone so far as to invest her life savings in the project. Recognising the magnitude of organising an event of this nature, Laura called upon her friends and fellow students for help. She got together a team of dedicated volunteers who have put their all in to
bringing the project to life. Laura explains what she and the rest of the team hope to achieve through the Go-Rock festival: “We are staging the festival with two objectives in mind: Firstly, to provide a platform for new up and coming acts. guaranteeing Scots dignity and security in old age. And he succinctly exposed Alex Salmond’s confusion when it comes to the currency. No amount of bluster and claims of ‘bullying’ can disguise a simple truth: the SNP’s currency plans are just not credible and are likely to lead to higher mortgage rates and increased economic instability.
Margaret Curran MP Earlier this week former Prime Minister Gordon Brown came to St Joseph’s Parish Hall in Tollcross to deliver a speech on Scottish Independence. I was delighted to welcome such a long standing and respected politician to the East End, to hear him speak about Scotland’s place in the UK and the future of devolution in Scotland. There are few figures better placed to talk about how we best divide power between the Scottish and UK Parliaments to change people’s lives for the better. Gordon explained that pooling and sharing risk and resources across a population of 60m instead of just 5m not only brings economic security, but also gives us more scope to redistribute wealth - from those that can afford it to those that are most in need. Nowhere is this more evident than with pensions. The UK Pensions system is so well respected that even the SNP want to pretend that we can keep most of it. And it’s clear why – Scottish Pensioners receive around £200 more per year than the UK average. Scotland’s population is also ageing at a faster rate than the rest of the UK. Pooling our resources across the UK protects us from this demographic time-bomb,
But Gordon was equally clear that the devolution journey started by Labour in 1997 is not over: the Scottish Parliament can, and must, be given more powers. Those of us that campaigned hard for the Scottish Parliament knew that devolution was a process, not an event. That is why Johann Lamont commissioned Scottish Labour’s Devolution Commission, which will outline our plans for further powers later this month. But even as we talk about the constitution, there is one fundamental difference between Labour and the nationalists: we believe that the best constitutional settlement is that which delivers the best outcomes for Scotland; whereas they believe in separation at all costs. As this debate develops, I am confident that more and more Scots will reject the nationalists’ glib assertions and agree that Scotland’s future is best served by remaining within the UK.

My role is to be in Spectator Services but I do not have any details yet. I could be showing you to your seat or picking up litter! Above all it is a chance for us as Glaswegians to give a really warm welcome to our visitors and to make them feel at home.
John Mason MSP Last Saturday morning I was at my first training session to be a volunteer for the Commonwealth Games. 4,000 of us were in the Emirates Arena to be given information and instructions. So it really comes home how soon the Games are. It was good to see young folk demonstrating some of the 17 sports, including table tennis, gymnastics, pole vault, badminton, and sevena-side rugby. The volunteers uniform was unveiled and Clyde the mascot was there doing his song and dance routines! Sitting next to me was a police officer (purely coincidence!) and on the other side a guy from Nottingham. Volunteers are coming from far and wide and I certainly began to feel excited
Of course, in amongst preparing for the Games, there is also the small matter of the Independence Referendum coming up. Monday 31st March at 7pm sees a big Yes question and answer session at St Mungo’s Academy – all welcome. Increasingly at the doors I find people wanting to discuss the issues and ask questions. I held a local meeting in Garrowhill Hall recently and am planning to do more such meetings to answer as many questions as I can. Let me know if you would like one in your area. The SNP has produced 650 pages on our plans for Scotland’s future. We have yet to see any plans from the No campaign. Where are they? Will they cut Scotland’s budget if we vote No?

Scottish Water - better H20
less C02
Scottish Water unveiled a major environmental initiative this week to combat climate change during climate week. Climate Week, Britain’s biggest climate change campaign is hoping to inspire a new generation of environmentalists who will together help create a more sustainable future, by showcasing practical everyday solutions from across the societal spectrum. With Scottish Water aiming to travel across Scotland and give schools the chance to see the process involved in giving every individual in Scotland spectacularly clean drinking water 24 hours a day. During Climate Week, Scottish Water is aiming to highlight how the company helps to protect and enhance the natural environment of Scotland
as well as helping to deliver low carbon services for its customers. Climate Change is a very real danger facing everybody, with mankind ever dependant on the power of fossil fuels and our economy highly dependant on fossil fuels. It means that there will be no decline in the use of fossil fuels and therefore global temperatures will steadily increase. Leading to more extreme weather, which directly effects the economy, and therefore a vicious circle of destruction is created. Scottish Water in the last seven years has decreased its carbon emissions, through reducing leakage through pipes, increased renewable energy generation, energy efficiency and the ability to now recycle sludge, which is the leftover solid material from waste
water treatment. To underline the urgency of becoming a low carbon emitting country in the last century, sea levels have risen nearly seven inches after staying at the same level for 2,000 years, mainly because of the burning fossil fuels and heating up the worlds atmosphere, which leads to a melting of the polar icecaps. With the wild weather set to continue(and get steadily worse) throughout the next few years, Scottish Water is aiming to ensure that all its services are resilient to any potential impact of climate change. Mark Williams, Scottish Water’s Head of Environmental Science and Regulation, said:
West of Scotland Media Publishers of local newspapers and specialist publications.
“Climate Week 2014 is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate what we are doing to build a sustainable Scottish Water. “That means being able to deliver on our customers’ expectations of high-quality water and waste services whenever and wherever they are required well into the future, while supporting Scotland’s economy and environment. “We’ve been working hard to ensure the quality of water in our reservoirs is of the highest quality, working with landowners to cut diffuse pollution, and our investment in waste water treatment works has seen their
compliance with standards increase.
environmental
“Our investment is helping to deliver the highest ever quality of drinking water at customer taps, while helping to support vital jobs across different sectors in the Scottish economy. “Projects like our £250 million investment in improvements to the river water quality and natural environment of the River Clyde is just one of the ways in which we’re looking to do even more, while helping communities and customers by playing our part in tackling flooding and dealing with the impact of heavy rainfall.

Star Signs
Joan Charles
I am delighted to be delivering your stars although; I won’t be doing them in the traditional way, as I am not an astrologer. For many years I have provided the stars using Tarot cards and that is what I will be doing here so, I guess in a sense they should be called, Taroscopes. Anyway, I do hope you enjoy what the cards have to say.
Aries
Emotional situations could have you in a tizzy and not knowing what to do for the best however, the more organized and efficient side of you should kick in and deal with all the practicalities and get things running smoothly again soon.
Taurus
Well cash flow issues may look as if they are settling down and things might be getting back into something that is more balanced. The hard work and effort that has been put in will start to pay off and in the not too distant future.
Gemini
The nightmare scenarios that we all have now and again may cause you some sleepless nights but if you stand back and take the time to get a plan together then you will be able to see things in greater clarity.
Cancer
Exciting news may be heading your way and it could be that the patter of tiny feet will be part of the excitement. For those who are in a relationship it is a positive time for change and for you singletons then look out for interesting new encounters.
Leo
As always you love the finer things in life and don’t mind paying a wee bit more for quality. The month of March looks set to be one where you are paying out cash to get what you want. I also sense you will be keeping an eye on the housing market too.

Scorpio

The Magic, Mystery & Legends of Scotland
The land of Scotland holds a special magic and mystery and creates a deep inner longing in people around the globe! Stories of Kings and Queens, Knights and Ladies, Witches and Wizards, Faeries, Dragons, Unicorns and swordwielding Scotsman protecting their families and land deeply touches each of us, as they are recounted time and again. These legends draw those seeking truth, romance and excitement from all corners of the earth. Scotland is full of “sacred” or highenergy spots that help us to connect to the land, and all the magic held within her. Some of these spots still have incredible ancient structures or ruins on them, showing examples of amazing architecture, and skill in building. When you visit places filled with history such as Kilmartin Glen, or Rosslyn Chapel, Beautiful Loch Lomond, The Mystical Faerie Glen near Rob Roy’s grave, the Powerful city of Glasgow, or the Magical Isle of Arran a feeling of being transported to another time in history often overcomes you as you tap into the energy of the area. As you listen to the stories of each of these places and allow yourself to feel the passion of the people, you almost expect to see the now famed or infamous characters appear before you.

of the often less than desirable wet weather. It is that moisture that creates the lush greenery that is exclusive to this part of the world, and adds to the magic and mystery of these stories. Nothing holds more intrigue than waking to a mist filled morning and watching as ever so gently the vapour dissolves while you peer under bushes and trees hoping to catch a glimpse of the Faerie Realm? Well, if you missed the Faeries, you may well see a deer quietly grazing in the green pastures before it gracefully runs for cover.

Interesting times seem to be ahead and I am sensing that you could be about to embark on a journey that will be positive in your life. I also feel that there is talk of a house move too which may be long awaited but worth it when it comes.
What are the spiritual connections to these places? Why did the ancient Celtic saints come here? Why did the pilgrims visit Luss, or Mount Schiehallion? What are the truths behind Rosslyn Chapel? What about the Stone of Destiny…. where did it come from, why is it the centre of such intrigue and where is it now? Who were the Druids and why did they gather in various spots throughout this country? What was Merlin’s connection to the ancient Kingdom of Strathclyde? What is the meaning behind the Glasgow Coat of Arms? Why do ancient Stone Circles dot the landscape of Scotland….and what power did they have or do they have now? Did Jesus and Mary Magdalene spend time in this country?

The Power of Colour Have you ever noticed or commented to someone that a particular colour they are wearing really suits them? Most of us have said it or had comment made to us and this is because certain colours in our Aura stand out. The Aura is a magnetic energy that surrounds each of us and acts as a protective energy shield that encapsulates the body. You may even find yourself wearing a bright colour on a day when you feel
down and this helps to change the mood. If you think about things like, power dressing, we wear colours like Red’s and Blue’s for interviews or official events as they make us stand out and reinforce our own energy – that’s why its called POWER dressing. Colours and their energy are powerful things and each colour holds a different meaning so let me show you what I mean. Red – this is the colour of power, drive and determination. People with too much red may be holding deep seated anger issues that hold them
back from enjoying a contented life.
Orange – this is the creative spark colour, the one that’s present when you have an Aha moment. It’s also linked with planning and the sensual elements in your life. It is a highenergy colour that lifts the mood. Yellow – this colour is about your psychic potential and links to the solar plexus and the seat of emotion. Apparently, if you are trying to learn something - they say having a yellow bulb in the room assist the process. Green – this colour links with love
Hypnotherapy for Smoking Cessation Josephine Mackenzie BSC (Hons) Psychology, PG Cert Clinical Hypnosis, Clinical Practitioner. MBPS MBSCH
Hypnosis is a wonderful tool and is often used as an adjunct to other therapies and can be a wonderful aid to anyone with the desire to give up smoking, notice I say ‘with the desire’ to give up smoking because, if someone comes to me asking to help them stop as their husband/wife/partner etc., thinks it’s a good idea, I turn them away. It doesn’t matter that they want to pay me or how much, if someone is there because someone else sent them they will fail, plain and simple, they have to be in that place where it’s time, their time, their decision. They need to be in that place where they are sick of being a slave to a drug, an addict to a cancer stick, no longer want to smell like an ashtray or realise how much it is costing them financially. However, it is rare to meet a smoker who really wants to stop, those who really want to, do just that without any help. There are many products on the market to wean the smoker off the cigarette but they still inject nicotine into the system one way or another and some even maintain the physical ‘habit’ of holding the offending weapon. Clinical hypnosis helps when the patient has failed to make the necessary changes for themselves by acting like a mental amplifier or booster, it can be described as a process that enhances the patient’s will power, uses the patient’s characteristics and puts the information where it needs to be. The process is described as a treatment with two components – stopping smoking and ensuring that the patient does not start smoking again in future. With all this in place, the patient will be able to effectively break their smoking habit and remain a non-smoker. The framework I am discussing here is based on a one-session treatment, which operates on the basis that smoking is primarily a habit to be broken. However, the efficacy of the framework depends on personalising this protocol for the patient, ensuring that the patient not only breaks the habit but also remains a non-smoker. There is nothing to be gained in asking a smoker why they want to stop, as they will have a well thought out logical string of reasons for why now is not a good time to stop.
and kindness and is often seen with nurses and those who are in the care profession. It is also the colour of money, too much green or a murky green shows greed and not healthy. Blue – the art of communication is strong when you see this colour and teachers, lecturers or those who impart knowledge are often see to have this colour in their aura or you may comment that they suit it. Indigo – anyone who is into psychic or spiritual matters may be seen with this colour as it links with the third eye. It is a colour that shows up on

those who are deep thinkers and who work in service to others. Violet – one of the highest spiritual colours you can get and as you would imagine connected with those who work in that area or who have extremely strong beliefs and commitments. So next time you select the clothes your going to wear, think about what you want to put out there as a none verbal message to those around you.
The Power of Reiki By Susan Hamilton
There is also no point is rolling out all the scaremongering points previously described in this piece as they know it all already, but have ignored it. The one-session treatment I am discussing involves Aversion Therapy - Aversive techniques on their own are of little long-term benefit in this situation, as smokers already know that cigarettes taste and smell bad, and they are aware of the long-term health problems associated with being a smoker. They can and will find excuses for continuing their habit. Clinical hypnosis allows the practitioner to explain to the patient that one of the main reasons that they failed so far is because they have tried to use the conscious, logical thought processes to help them stop, but it is not this part of the their mind that controls their habit; it is the unconscious part of their mind, the part of their mind that contains memories of being a smoker, and controls unconscious processes such as breathing, heart rate and more significantly their habits which needs to get the message that they are no longer a smoker. The unconscious part of the mind knows all the triggers for smoking, and it is in this part of their mind that patients’ need to imagine themselves involved in all of those activities, but without a cigarette and being in control. Hypnosis is described as a process that allows the conscious part of the mind to relax while the unconscious part of the mind can take on board the suggestions. Patients will often respond better to the term ‘memory’ than the term ‘unconscious mind’, as the latter’s undertones of analysis can put some people off. All of the foregoing is an overview of the process however; every treatment is tailored to the individual using their own language and perceptions of their habit to focus on being a nonsmoker. Last month I introduced you to Reiki as a healing tool. It can however be used for many other purposes. …read on! Today as everyone strives for health, happiness, time and money, in reality there are more and more stressed people. Many are just not as happy as they would like to be and often feel overwhelmed trying to juggle work, family and all the other obligations of life. How good would it be to have something at your fingertips to make life a little easier and less stressful? It’s no surprise to those of us who use Reiki everyday that such a tool exists. Making sure the little niggles in life don’t grow into great big problems is one of the many benefits of tapping into the flow of Universal energy, which is Reiki. Many are under the illusion that Reiki is a method of natural healing alone are amazed at its versatility and how it can enhance every aspect of our daily lives. Those attuned to Reiki learn to use it as naturally as breathing and will quite candidly say that it has changed their lives for the better. Apart from the wonderful healing tool that it is here are a few other ways Reiki can be used. Around the home use Reiki when cooking or baking as an additional ingredient to any recipe. Reiki flowing into the dish will add extra life energy to the food and make it that little bit more special for those who eat it. The dreaded ironing basket seems to empty a lot quicker and be less of a chore when Reiki is applied to the basket before starting.
Have you ever walked into a house and not liked the atmosphere? Reiki can be used to clear negative energy from houses and to lighten up the atmosphere and general ambiance. Treatment rooms and houses, which receive regular Reiki, are peaceful, restful places. Most people spend a lot of
time in their homes, so it’s important to take good care of your home’s energy.
Outside Reiki can be used in the garden; Reiki your seeds or seedlings before planting them along with the soil to give them a head start. Giving regular Reiki to your plants and the water in the watering can will keep them growing and blossoming beautifully. Inside the house make that bunch of flowers last longer too, by Reiki-ing both the flowers and the water in the vase. How many times have you headed for the shops or that important appointment and ended up totally frustrated by not being able to find a parking space? Sending Reiki ahead to where you need to park and you will be guided to a space, it never fails! For those learning and studying, Reiki is a wonderful asset. It is easy to read the same page several times without anything actually learning anything. A few minutes of Reiki will improve not only your retention but also the understanding of what you are studying. When it comes to exam time, send Reiki ahead to your exam room to ensure stress and tension are replaced with calmness.
In the workplace Reiki can clear any clutter of the mind preventing the flow of creativity. Give Reiki to the project or situation and you’ll find your mind opening up to new levels of awareness that contain better ideas and ways to deal with what you’re working on. Happy and successful people aren’t without difficult situations or problems in life, they are people who have learned how to solve problems in positive and effective ways and Reiki is one way of doing this. If you are interested in learning more about Reiki or coming on my course contact me, Susan Hamilton, by emailing hamilton748@ btinternet.com or calling on 07779 329762

Minecraft Gamer Beats out Bieber and One D Joseph Garrett of Portsmouth, more commonly known by his gamer handle, Stampylongnose, has recently found his YouTube videos in which he commentates on his playthroughs of the popular virtual world building game Minecraft have surpassed even that of Justin Biebers videos. Surprisingly Garrett’s channel is also being watched by the same demographic one would normally associate with Biebers fanbase. The 23 year old who started producing the videos from his bedroom on a part time basis has now left his job as a bar man and taken up the duties of producing his Minecraft videos full time. His videos are now viewed millions of times a week, somewhere around the 30 million mark, beating out the likes of Justin Bieber and even the flavour of the month One Direction. However, if Joseph was to walk down the street no-one would recognize him. The gamer who makes his revenue on the back of YouTube advertisements, is still unable to take in the fact that he is being paid to do what he loves saying: “I play video games all day, I make videos, which is what I love doing, and I can be creative and I can have fun and the fact that people enjoy watching it makes it that much more nicer, so I’m very happy.”
Garrett also went on to say how he doesn’t think it’s “sunk in yet” and “When you’re in your room all day looking at little numbers tick up. I think it’s hard to gauge it. Social network monitoring sites Socialblade and Tubefilter are putting Garretts channel in the top 10 mostviewed channels list. Although his channel doesn’t have the top level of subscribers the views are more than making up for this shortcoming. Garrett says that his audience demographic is made up of six to fourteen year olds going on to say: “The majority are girls rather than boys, which surprises a lot of people, though it’s only about a 60/40 split”. The radically shifting world of childrens entertainment can be attributed to this massive viewership, with more and more children demanding interactive entertainment where they can directly interact with the entertainer. Garrett attributes this to the change in attitudes regarding media consumption saying: “A lot of people view the television as a very passive thing now. It’s in the corner, it’s always rolling 24/7. I think things on tablets, phones and laptops seems a lot more instant and probably just a bit more exciting.” By

Electrifying performance at Geneva By
This year at Geneva a slew of hybrid and pure electric vehicles have been gracing the stands, and more often than not they’re actual production models rather than tech demos. One of the most notable examples of AC/DC powered cars at the show is to be found in Porsche’s line up of hybrid vehicles, in the form of the new Panamera S. The big German super estate is capable of 167mph, has a 3 litre engine and an electric motor which counter intuitively for such a powerful machine is apparently able to travel 91 miles on a single gallon of petrol. Regarding this change of heart from a manufacturer which usually focuses on nothing but break neck speed and performance, Wolfgang Hatz, Porsche’s research director said:
Brendan Doherty
“We know our duty and we have big concerns about the environment, this technology helps us to fulfil our responsibilities, and it will help us to meet future requirements from regulators, for at least the next 10 to 15 years.”. This amazing vehicle compliments other members of the Volkswagen Groups efforts in hybrid technology with the Volkswagen stand at Geneva showcasing the fantastic new Golf GTE. A GTI with electric hybrid underpinnings and can allegedly achieve a staggering 188mpg. These developments are good news for motorheads across the world as the future of performance motoring both on both the luxury and hot hatch ends of the spectrum seem to be in safe hands. The future’s bright, it doesn’t include a Prius.

Formula One legend Michael Schumacher Update Almost two months after Schumacher suffered serious head injuries in a skiing accident and was placed into a medically induced coma, the stars neurologists have said that it is “unlikely” to make a full recovery. However last week it was announced by Schumacher’s family that there has been a slight improvement in his condition, with some response being recorded to the voices of his family members. Schumacher’s condition stabilised a fortnight ago and doctors began the process of waking him up from the coma, in the hope that his brain would have repaired some of the damage, unfortunately the F1 legend did not respond to the withdrawal of sedatives and remains in a coma.
The stars wife Corinna, spent her birthday on the 4th of March at Michaels bedside in the Grenoble hospital. Along with her children and family members she spoke words of “love and encouragement” to the stricken star in a bid to aid his recovery. By

New Year house building figures continue to rise reports NHBC The number of new homes registered in the UK in January show a 14% increase compared to the same time in 2013, new figures from NHBC reveal. The year’s first statistics continue the upward trend seen throughout 2013, which resulted in the highest number of new home registrations since the economic downturn in 2007. In total 11,489 new homes were registered (8,312 private sector; 3,177 public sector) in January, an increase on the 10,112 last January. The number of new homes registered in Scotland between November 2013 and January 2014 was 2,193 and increase of 405 newly registered homes in the same period the previous year. As the leading warranty and insurance provider for new homes in the UK, NHBC’s registration statistics provide significant insight on the country’s
new homes market.
Commenting on the latest statistics NHBC’s Commercial Director Richard Tamayo said: “Our figures show that the industry enjoyed a strong start to 2014 by maintaining the momentum from the previous year. Both private and public sectors reported growth on the same month in 2013 and we look forward to hopefully seeing this trend continue throughout the year to help meet the demand for new homes.”
New Homes At Toryglen Work on 160 new homes in a Glasgow community has been launched by Housing Minister Margaret Burgess – heralding the start of a huge transformation of the area.
Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) is building 100 of the homes at North Toryglen for tenants, while a further 60 will be for private sale by housebuilder Cruden Group. The £9.3m development is the first phase of a major regeneration of the area by Transforming Communities: Glasgow, a partnership between GHA, Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Government. As well as homes, a new community base for local projects has been set up, a care home for the elderly is being built and plans are in the pipeline for new shops.
Better alternative to Painting Lasts 5-7 times longer
Margaret Burgess, Minister for Housing and Welfare, was on hand to mark the start of work on the GHA homes. Ms Burgess said: “The start of work on this site represents a major milestone for the community of North Toryglen. The development will provide good quality, affordable housing and is a great example of close partnership working by Transforming Communities: Glasgow.”
as part of the regeneration plans. The community is also benefiting from jobs and training opportunities as a result of the work. Cruden, as part of its contract with GHA, will provide training and employment opportunities for local people along with supporting community projects and businesses.
The 100 new GHA homes, which are due to be finished by autumn 2015, are a mix of 64 houses and 36 flats with 10 built to wheelchair standard. A total of 18 of the homes are onebedroom, with the rest a mix of sizes.
“At Toryglen we are not only working with GHA, but are also original signatories to the Wheatley Pledge to create opportunities for apprenticeships, training and employment for the community as well as recruiting a number of local sub-contractors.”
They are being built to help provide modern, energy-efficient places to live for GHA tenants whose homes have been earmarked for demolition
Future phases of the regeneration project are due to start in 2017 and continue until 2025 and could see up to 400 homes in total.

Rocks Double Header Weekend It was a familiar story for the Glasgow Rocks last weekend as they entered a season defining away double header in Birmingham and Cheshire, with the latter being the 1st leg of the BBL Trophy Semi-Final.
Finnerty Disappointed Over Gardiner Conference Loss BRAEHEAD CLAN head coach Ryan Finnerty expressed his disappointment as the club lost out to the Dundee Stars in the race for the Gardiner Conference.
The Clan needed a win at Tayside on Sunday night to keep their slim hopes of retaining the trophy alive in a group consisting of Dundee, Fife Flyers, Edinburgh Capitals and Hull Stingrays. But it wasn’t to have performed course got a 3-1 second seeding play-offs.

Clan coach Ryan Finnerty said: “I’m disappointed to give up the Conference of course, but I’ve got to congratulate Jeff Hutchins and everyone at Dundee Stars for the great year they’ve had. It’s a tough one, but the guys battled hard and we didn’t get the bounce we were looking for.”
The Rocks outclassed the flagging Birmingham Knights side on Saturday evening, running away with a comfortable 96-75 victory only to lose their way in the final quarter of the BBL SemiFinal Trophy fixture against the Cheshire Phoenix, eventually going down 80-74. The weekend started with great promise as the Rocks swept aside basement team, Birmingham Knights with a clinical display of basketball. The Rocks came flying out of the blocks and established an early 16-5 lead, before the Knights brought it back to single digits with a three-pointer. However, this would be the closest that the Knights got as the Rocks continued to pull throughout the game as the Rocks sailed to an easy win, with a final score of 96-75. The Big test of the weekend was to come in the form of the Cheshire Phoenix on Sunday night. The Rocks knew that they had to keep it close to give themselves a fighting chance in the 2nd leg of the BBL Tr ophy Semi-Final which is to be played at the Emirates Arena on the 14th March. The Rocks led for the majority of the game and only relinquished their lead with 3 minutes remaining on the clock. The first 3 quarters saw the Rocks play some of the gutsiest basketball they have played all season, however a familiar sight occurred to the Rocks during the final quarter as they once again lost their way and crashed to a demoralising 6 point defeat – not dissimilar to the Scotland Rugby teams demise in the final minutes of their Six Nations test against the French. Coach Sterling Davis had the following to say about the weekend: ‘It was another weekend full of what if’s. We played great for 7 quarters over the weekend only to falter at the very end. I thought we played extremely well at Birmingham and I felt that we were in complete control of the Phoenix fixture until the very last quarter when it all went wrong. It would have been great to walk out of there with a lead heading into the 2nd leg but unfortunately we were not able to do that. We will now need to focus on winning our home leg by more than 6 points on Friday night – It’s a matter of pride now, we need to stand our ground and not allow teams to steamroll over us on our home court!” Tip-off for Friday night’s fixture is at 7:30pm and tickets are still available via www.glasgowrocks.co.uk. Dundee’s Conference win was richly deserved after what has been a solid season and they got the upper hand on the Clan early in the second period
thanks to James Isaacs.
Nikita Kashirsky made it 3-1 for the Stars in the final period, triggering the celebrations as the Stars clinched their first piece of silverware in the Elite League. For Braehead, it was disappointment on the back of a memorable 8-2 win over former Elite League champions Nottingham Panthers on Saturday, which clinched them a play-off berth. Club captain Ash Goldie scored inside the first minute to become Braehead’s all-time leading goalscorer, moving ahead of former team-mate Jordan Krestanovich. Eric Werner levelled for the Panthers, but it was as close as they got, with Joel Champagne, Ed McGrane and Goldie adding more to make it 4-1 after the first period. Panthers’ Brent Henley found himself kicked out of the game in the opening period as he rained a succession of punches on Clan defence man Chris Frank as frustrations started to show.
Nottingham’s Leigh Salters scored another in the second period, but Joe Cullen and Scott Aarssen increased the lead further for Braehead going into the third period. Champagne and McGrane added their respective second goals of the evening to make it 8-2 and over the team they look likely to face in the play-off quarter finals in three weeks time. Goldie, on becoming the club’s alltime leading goalscorer with 64 goals, preferred to talk about getting the goals that got the win rather than his own personal achievement. He said: “It’s good to reach that milestone, but it’s about putting the puck in the net and getting the wins for the team. That’s the most important thing. “Everyone was feeling good after the victory over Nottingham. I wasn’t disappointed at not getting a hat-trick, but we need to find the groove to take us into the rest of the season.” By

Tigers on the verge With little over a fortnight now until they roar into British Premier League action, Glasgow Tigers are still on the search for the final rider to complete their major overhaul from the side who collected the wooden spoon last season. Last week the club learned that their fight to bring Aussie crowd pleaser Joey Ringwood back for a second term at Ashfield Stadium had proved unsuccessful. Some rule changes and complications around renewing the Australian’s work permit to enter the UK has put an end to hopes of including Ringwood in the 2014 team.
Attention has therefore now turned to securing a replacement to link up with Dane Anders Thomsen at reserve berth, and with just two weeks until the team is due to meet for pre season practice ahead of a three meetings in three days opening schedule, pressure is on to come up with a quality replacement. A club spokesman provided an update:
“A lot of work has gone into trying to get Joey back to Glasgow as we believe he was beginning to show his undoubted potential towards the end of his first season here in Scotland and could well
have been a trump card for us.
We have to look forward now though and have opened signing talks with a couple of potential riders who are tried and trusted options and who would certainly score us points right from the off, which is what we need.
Allowing for paperwork, we would hope to have tied up a deal within the next week at latest, we will have a full and competitive side to take to track for our opening fixtures.”
In other off track news the club this week announced having secured new team sponsors for 2014 in the form of Allied Vehicles who operate just a few hundred yards from the Tigers home patch. At a time where every professional sports club has a dependency on sponsorship the Tigers are delighted to have maintained their tradition of attracting high profile club
sponsors and see the partnership with Allied Vehicles as a long term initiative.
Tigers new look team, with riders coming from Germany, France, Holland, Denmark and Australia, are all now at an advanced stage of preparation before gathering for the first time together in Glasgow on Wednesday the 26th of March for the club’s official practice event at Ashfield Stadium. The team then goes into competetive action at rivals Edinburgh (Friday, 28th), travel to Workington (Saturday, 29th) before opening their home season against Edinburgh at Ashfield Stadium (Sunday, 30th) – all fixtures and club information can be found at www.glasgowtigers.co

Eagle Eye: The Ryder Cup Review
Welcome to my new column counting down to the 40th Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in September. It may be 7 months away but it is already the talk of clubhouses up and down the country.

Ryder Cup to provide fans with on-demand interactive content while on course On-course Wi-Fi completes provision of online services to fans after rail and bus operators confirm Ryder Cup journeys will also be Wi-Fi enabled. Spectators at The 2014 Ryder Cup will be able to access Wi-Fi throughout the course at Gleneagles thanks to an official network supplier agreement with Xirrus®.
Available throughout the entire Gleneagles site, this will provide fans with access to on-demand video, interactive content, social media apps and location-based services.
Richard Hills, European Ryder Cup Director, said: “Wireless services bring huge advantages to the whole golfing experience, by providing spectators with faster and easier access to digital content. “From a technology perspective, Xirrus was able to meet the very specific requirements of the golf course environment, providing us with complete coverage and the ability to handle huge capacity and bandwidth demands with no dropouts. By partnering with Xirrus for The 2014 Ryder Cup we are going to take this performance to the next level and truly revolutionise the way we deliver digital content and engage with fans at the event.”

What an exciting couple of weeks it has been! Captain McGinley will be delighted with the form shown by Victor Dubussion in the World Matchplay final in Arizona last week. The 23 yr old produced two incredible up and downs to extend the final, eventually losing to Jason Day. This grit and determination is sure to please McGinley. The former amateur world number one has a lot of game despite being a relative unknown and has more or less booked his place in the European final 12 in September. I remember watching him in the European Team Championships at Western Gailes in 2007 when he comprehensively hammered a certain R.McIlroy in the Matchplay stages. He will be a brilliant addition to the European team. It was also very good to see Inverness’ Russell Knox playing well in the Honda Classic, having narrowly lost in a four man play off, however like Martin laird, he needs to put in some impressive performances in Europe this season and in the majors to solidify a place in the European team. It’s been a long road to the PGA tour for Knox, having worked his way up from the mini tours and there’s a possibility that talk of Ryder Cup may be too early for him. The traditional season is not far away now. Augusta and the masters isn’t far away now. My money is on Rory McIlroy. It’s set up perfect for his game - and he has a score to settle! Bring it on.
Till next time, this is Eagle Eye signing off.

COOKIE WINS KELSO FEATURE
CLEVER COOKIE continued his upward curve with an impressive display in the £1.25 Million Scoop6 Premier Kelso Hurdle under regular jockey Wilson Renwick. After back-to-back handicap strikes at Musselburgh, he stepped up to Grade 2 company in style when slamming long-time leader Fergall by eight-lengths. Winning trainer Peter Niven said: “He was bred by my mother and this will have been a great tonic as she’s had a little operation recently. He’s not just the best I’ve had, he’s the best I’ve sat on as I ride him out every morning. “He’s got a few gears and, though he was happy to rip from the front over hurdles, we’ve had to do a bit of work with him over fences and he settles really well. He’s a slow learner but he’s getting the hang of it now. “Who knows what he could end up to be but I’d say he’s more likely to go to Aintree than Cheltenham. I’m even tempted to run him on the Flat, that’s how talented I think he is.” Renwick went on to complete a 20-1 double on Rose Dobbin-trained Rocking Blues in the 2m 5f chase. Brian Hughes and Maggio landed the Best Odds Guaranteed At totepool.com Premier Chase by four and a half lengths from Mr Moonshine for Irish trainer Patrick Griffin. Griffin’s son and assistant James said: “This was the plan and this is our Gold Cup. I’d love to win an Irish
Grand National and hopefully he will go close in a race like that. “He loves it at Kelso where he has also won three times over hurdles and I’m delighted to give Brian a winner as I’ve known him since he was a 10lb claimer in Ireland. There are a couple of races at Aintree for him so that’s where he could go next.” Jet Master and Lucy Alexander were appropriate winners the Cyril Alexander Memorial Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase as the combination saw off Smadynium by 11-lengths. Successful trainer Nick Alexander said: “This race is in memory of my late father and I’ve trying to win it for 21 years. He would have been very proud of Lucy today and he loved having winners at Kelso – he was also one of the first commercial sponsors here.” By

Albion Rovers pull off shock result against Rangers
Scottish league one champions elect Rangers were lucky to earn a replay with part timers. Albion Rovers after the Coatbridge minnows led the Ibrox side for nearly seventy minutes in the William Hill Scottish Cup. Rangers had a controversial Bilel Mohsni goal to thank for earning the right to dispose of the valiant part time football club. Moshni appeared to lead with his arm when challenging Rovers keeper Neil Parry, however the referee decided there was no infringement and let the goal stand. Saving Ally McCoist’s team from their blushes.
easily the more threatening in the opening pulsating duel. Albion Rovers going into this match had yet to concede a goal in the Scottish Cup, disposing of Spartans. Deveronvale, Motherwell and Stenhousemuir on the way to the quarter finals. With a travelling support of 1100 fans, Albion Rovers started and finished the match with belief and goalscorer Ciaran Donnelly has written his name in the Albion Rovers book of legends.
James Ward’s side fought valiantly and by the end of the match his players were dropping like flies due to fatigue, ironically one of the players who went down suffering from cramp is actually a fitness instructor.
Rangers although having the lions share of possession rarely looked as if they were going to threaten with it, wasting possession in the first half on several occasions. Neil Parry had little to do in the first half and comfortably dealt with what he had to.
If Rangers thought that Albion were turning up to enjoy the spectacle and nothing else they soon realised it was not to be the case, the part time side
The moment that sent the away fans into a state of euphoria was all Rangers own doing, Lee McCulloch failing to clear a corner and instead headed
it back into the six yard danger area, with the ball falling kindly to Ciaran Donnelly who slotted it home. Sending the away crowd and his team-mates into raptures. Too many of Rangers players looked disinterested during the match with little or no urgency to be found and any attack on goal was comfortably dealt with by the impressive Neil Parry. At half time the boos could be heard reverberating around the less than half full Ibrox, it would be expected that McCoist would have had a few fiery words to say to his beleaguered under performing side. Rangers started the second half with a far greater urgency, however, they were lacking a killer instinct, with the team creating few clear cut chances. Albion were braced to provide the biggest upset in Scotland this season. It wasn’t to be however and after the equaliser Rangers looked the more
Historic Victories for Team GB at Sochi Paralympics It was a historic day for ParalympicsGB as Kelly Gallagher and guide Charlotte Evans put in a superb performance to win Great Britain’s first ever gold medal at the Winter Paralympics, while team-mates Jade Etherington and Caroline Powell also beat the defending Paralympic champion to take bronze in the women’s Super-G. Their success means that ParalympicsGB have met UK Sport’s target of winning ‘at least two’ medals on day three of the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games and secured GB’s first gold medal on snow in either the Olympic or Paralympic Winter Games. Gallagher said: “I’m delighted, it is so good to have such a great reward for all my and Charlotte’s hard work. I couldn’t have done it without Charlotte’s constant determination and talent. She’s a star! It’s been a difficult journey here and we are so happy to have had so much support from the very start. Today has proven to me that hard work and selfbelief really does pay-off.”
likely to capitalise and it was only some last ditch defending and heroic displays that kept the scoreline equal. In all fairness Rangers didn’t deserve to lose, they had a vastly superior, possession, ratio but for sheer guts and determination Rovers deserved their replay. Albion Rovers manager would not let Rangers controversial goal dilute his sides achievement on the day, he said “The referee gave a goal and I can’t change that. “But I refuse to dwell on its significance. I won’t allow anything to take away from what we’ve achieved here today. “Our goalkeeper, Neil Parry, was
fantastic on an individual basis and the rest of the side worked hard as a unit. “That’s how it works for us every time we play. Our band of fans were quiet for about 10 minutes near the end because they were starting to think about the enormity of what we were on the verge of achieving. “And that’s the way it is with Albion Rovers. “It’s not about the money for us, it’s about what we can do for this club’s reputation. “Now the people of Coatbridge have an opportunity to turn out in large numbers and support us when the replay takes place at New Douglas Park.”
Hampden Park Commonwealth Games athletics venue unveiled Hampden Park has officially been unveiled in with help from London 2012 Gold Medal winning Jessica Ennis and homegrown hero Eilidh Childs.
With the Commonwealth Games set to be played in part at the National Stadium, the surface needed to be raised by nearly two metres on a bed of metal stilts. The work has taken a total of three months to transform it from a football ground into a state of the art athletics stadium. The officially capacity of the stadium has been reduced to accommodate the new athletic track, falling from 52,000 to an official 44,000 for the games. More than 6,000 steel posts and 1,200 panels to create the deck and it weighs more than a whopping 1000 tonnes.
The total cost of the transformation was £14 million pounds and Glasgow 2014 Chief Executive David Grevemberg has described the new look athletics venue as innovative and pioneering. BBC Scotland correspondent Jane Lewis said it had taken three months to get to this stage and the total
cost of transforming the national football stadium into an athletics venue was £14m. She said: “The only thing missing at the moment is the running track but that will be put down in due course. It will be laid when the weather improves.”
With the track being laid in the near future, it will bring the crowd closer to the action, something that has been lacking at Hampden since its initial rejuvenation.
Ian McKenzie of Glasgow 2014 was the man behind the inspirational transformation that befit the National Stadium he said “The crowd are going to be close to the action and that’s going to be good from a spectating point of view and I’m sure it will increase the athletes performance as well.
With more than 1,000 athletes set to compete on Hampden’s new athletics track in just seven days the crowd are set to witness something exciting, enthralling and unique. Almost as unique as the stadium its taking place in.
