The chemical benzoylecgonine can actually be found in one of the most popular body rubs on the market. In a report published last year Public Health England announced that there are a number of pharmaceutical compounds found in drinking water in Britain, Ibuprofen, naproxen, carbamazapine(used to treat epilepsy) and caffeine as well. The amounts found are so infinitesimal that according to the EU Drinking Water Directive there would be “no potential risk if the contaminant was to be absorbed continuously over a persons lifetime.” The discovery of such a minute level of contaminants means that the water companies are very efficient at keeping the water supplies clean, and that they are transparent in their findings, increasing the public’s confidence in the cleanliness of our water supply. What could be considered altogether more shocking is the malaise of the general public about finding any amount of cocaine in the water supply. Body of Declan Hainey looked like ‘a doll’
The man who found the body of toddler Declan Hainey thought that the remains in the cot might be a doll. John Rodden revealed that his wife Elizabeth Rodden, Declan’s Grandmother, ran into the street screaming. The couple received a call from a health worker to let them know that Declan was going to be reported missing. The couple, along with Declan’s aunt went along to the flat where they found the body in his cot. Declan’s mother, Kimberley Hainey, 39, was jailed for life in January 2012, then later released. She denies having any involvement in his death. The inquiry continues.

A woman has been the victim of a violent sex attack by three men, whilst walking to a friends house in Toryglen. Police are looking for three male suspects, described as Asian and in their 20’s who were reportedly driving a white or silver BMW. The woman was walking to a friends house in the early hours of Saturday morning, last weekend, and was pulled into a close in Edinbeg Avenue and raped. Chief Inspector Carol McGuire Area Commander said: “I would like to reassure the public that we have and will continue to have extra uniform patrols in the area and anyone with any concerns should speak to an officer. “A crime of this nature is very rare in what is a tight knit community.” The woman managed to make her way home
after the gang fled the scene. Police officers have said she did not require hospital treatment, but was left very distressed. Detective Chief Inspector Sharon MacGregor said: “We have received an encouraging response from the public following the coverage in the media and I would like to extend my thanks to everyone who contacted us. “Detectives are now examining that information to establish if there are any new lines of inquiry which can be followed up. “Officers are still in the process of gathering CCTV from in the area to try and obtain more detail about the suspects and the car. “I would still like to appeal to anyone who may have any information to get in touch with us as a matter of urgency.” By

Alleged racist walks Body found at Dumbarton Road flat free from court Forensic officers have sealed of the entry to a tenement flat on 2037 Dumbarton road after a body was found in the early hours of Thursday morning. Detectives launched a murder inquiry on Thursday after an attacker forced his way into the flat and murdered the 52-year-old man. Detective Chief Inspector Jim Smith said: “Our enquiries are at a very early stage to establish the circumstances which led to the death of this man.
Fraser Elliot was due to stand trial after allegedly hurling racial abuse at Salih Ahmed but walked free from court after no witnesses turned up for court. The 27 year old was due to stand trial for a second attack months after he was seen to launch an attack at the street busker, it is not known whether he knew he was being filmed by television cameras. Elliot appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court to stand trial for allegedly “pursuing a racially aggravated course of conduct” which harassed Salih Ahmed in August 2012.

Local customers in a Cardonald newsagent queueing for their lottery tickets were stunned to find an entire Samba flash mob appear in the shop funded by the National Lottery. Passenger, real name Micheal David Rosenberg, played a small gig on Buchanan Street on Tuesday, entertaining hundreds of shoppers on the style mile.
Premier Inn is set to open a new £11million hotel at the Pacific Quay next month in time for the Commonwealth Games. The hotel will create 65 full and part time jobs, including four apprenticeships. It will be the sixth Premier Inn in
Glasgow city centre and will have 180 bedrooms, half of which will look onto the Clyde and views of the city, as well as a 180-seater restaurant. The six-storey build is situated next to the BBC and STV Headquarters and across from the Hydro Arena and SECC.

New system set up in Scotland to review child deaths
Concerns that the mortality rate is higher than in many EU countries has prompted a new national system of reviewing child deaths to be set up.
Research has showed that the UK had the second highest rate of “excess mortality” in 15 western European states. Health Secretary Alex Neil believes the system would help to find ways to lower child mortality rates. Alex Neil said: “The death of a child is always a tragedy for the families and it’s only right that the reasons for that death are explored thoroughly to enable us to put in place measures that can help prevent any future tragedies.

Glasgow’s East End slimmers celebrate losing pounds to gain pounds for local charities A group of big-hearted slimmers from the east end of Glasgow are celebrating losing over 420st between them and raising over £2500 as part of a sponsored slim for a number of charities such as Marie Curie nurses, terminally ill children’s holidays, Yorkhill chilidrens hospital and the Alzheimer’s society. Members of the Slimming World groups, held weekly across the city were taking part in a national campaign called Slim for Good running across all 11,000 Slimming World groups in the UK and Ireland. The aim of the six-week drive, which kicked off on February 24th, was to help people to lose weight and improve their health while raising money for a good cause in their local area. The slimmers in all groups voted
for the worthy causes and charities they wanted to support throughout the campaign and chose ones closest to several members within each groups hearts. Consultants from each of the groups, say the Slim for Good campaign gave members of the group an added incentive to achieve their weight-loss dreams: “Supporting a worthwhile causes such as these had given everyone a special focus and real commitment to their weightloss goals. For many members being sponsored has been a great way to kick start their weight loss and for others it’s been a boost to help them stay on track. At Slimming World we pride ourselves on the care and support we give each other to lose weight – we’re known as the club with the big heart – so when members started talking about raising money for each cause and what we could all do together, there really was no
stopping us. I’m so proud of what the members in each group have achieved during the last six weeks.” Ann Marie, consultant and manager within the East End of Glasgow hopes the group’s success will inspire other people in the local community to lose weight and improve their health too. She says: “Six weeks doesn’t sound like a long time, but in that period I’ve seen so many changes, people losing weight, feeling happier and healthier than ever, and their confidence increasing. A&E waiting times over four hours have tripled
The number of patients waiting for over four hours in accident and emergency departments is almost three times the amount it was five years ago. Audit Scotland has revealed a report showing that in 2012-13, 104,000 people waited longer than four hours, compared to 36,000 in 2008-09. Four hours is the target waiting time the NHS have set to treat patients.
Health Secretary Alex Neil said the NHS in Scotland was “treating more emergency patients than ever before”. He added “This trend and pressure is evident across all developed health services, including the rest of the UK, and there is no doubt it presents considerable challenges in terms of treating patients quickly - as Audit Scotland’s report makes clear.”

In the past year Glasgow City Council’s Families for Children Service has recruited and approved 68 new foster carers to help provide essential support for the city’s vulnerable young people. Bringing on board 68 new carers in 2013/14 represents the single biggest rise in foster carer numbers in one year since the council launched a sustained recruitment campaign in 2005. Glasgow City Council now has over 500 foster carers, which makes it the biggest provider of local authority foster care in Scotland. Councillor Gordon Matheson said of the Childrens Service: “Foster carers are a vital part of our care system. When families run into difficulties, it’s often foster carers who step in to pick up the pieces. More than anything children need a stable, warm and loving environment in which to grow.
“Glasgow is proud of the fact that it supports its vulnerable and it is only right that we increase the allowances we pay to foster carers to support the children in their care.”

The plea has come from Soliciter General, Lesley Thomson QC who believes that making domestic abuse a specific offence would help victims. She stated that the legislation that was introduced on stalking in 2010 is an example of this.
Lesley Thompson said it “gave prosecutors a new tool to tackle this harmful behaviour and sent a clear public message that this sort of conduct was not acceptable and would not be tolerated”. Scotland’s population set to increase by 9%

The population of Scotland is set to go up by 9% over 25 years, it has been reported. The National Records of Scotland have made projections of the population in the country for the 25 year period from 2012 to 2037. They have revealed that there is a suggested rise from 5.31m in 2012 to 5.78m by 2037. This figure is then set to continue growing. The increase is not predicted throughout the entire country, with areas of the highest increase being Aberdeen and Edinburgh and Inverclyde and Argyll and Bute having a decrease. The document stated that “the assumptions are based on past trends and do not take account of any future changes that may occur as a result of policy initiatives, but may reflect the past impact of policy and economic change.”

Man rescued from flat fire Firefighters rescued a man from a flat in the Southside of Glasgow after a small kitchen fire broke out on Wednesday night.

Beauty salon owner, Miss Glasgow International, Princes Trust Young Ambassador... Melissa Currie is a woman of many talents, but that’s not all, she has been nominated to be a baton carrier in the upcoming Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Melissa, 25, opened her business three years ago after turning to the Prince’s Trust for employment advice when viral meningitis made it difficult for her to find work. “I had the viral form of meningitis and my health went right downhill. I couldnt get any jobs, I kept getting made redundant and I just didn’t know what to do with myself. So I contacted the Prince’s Trust!” The Prince’s Trust suggested Melissa joined their Enterprise Programme. Melissa said “I went on the programme and they they
said to me ‘why don’t you open up your own place?’ Never in a million years did I think I was going to!” After going on a course to learn about bookkeeping, tax and marketing she was given a grant, searched for a property and opened Mac’s Hair and Beauty Salon in the heart of the West End, minutes from the bustling Byres Road. After the Prince’s Trust recognised her hard work and dedication, they asked her to be a Prince’s Trust Young Ambassador. Melissa took them up on their offer, saying “they helped me get to where I am today, of course I would!” She came second place for

security for Games
The fear of losing your hearing can be a frightening one, the ability to hear is something that people take for granted, and yet almost everyday people subject their ears and hearing to noise levels and sounds that can permanently damage one of your five senses for ever. Tinnitus which derives from the Latin tinnitus or “ringing” is a condition that can have a variety of effects on the person suffering from it, some of the causes of this debilitating condition range from, continuous ringing in the ears, inability to hear someone speak in a crowded room. One of the biggest causes of tinnitus is exposure to loud music/noise for extended periods of time, regular concert goers, people who work with power tools, even people who regularly listen to music through their earphones. All are high risk candidates to experience hearing loss. Sounds travel from the outer ear through the middle of the ear into the inner ear which contains the cochlea. The cochlea is a coiled spiral tube which contains an uncountable amount of sensitive hair cells. The auditory nerve transmits sounds to the brain after this. If the cochlea gets damaged, the brain attempts to overcompensate for the lack of signal, it does this by multiplying the signals that it is receiving(the bits that aren’t damaged) and its the over representation that causes the sound of tinnitus and it’s irreversible. The EDM DJ Aly from Aly and Fila recently retired from DJ’ing live because of a severe ear injury during a performance, doctors informed him of the damage and if he had continued would have risked being permanently deaf in both ears. Some other celebrities who suffer from tinnitus are Black Eyed Peas member and BBC1, talent show, The Voice coach, Will.I.Am, Hollywood actor and homegrown hero, Gerard Butler, Ex Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher, WHO guitarist Pete Townsend and legendary front-man Bono from U2 have all complained in the past about suffering from the irritating condition. At the present minute there isn’t anything that Otolaryngologists (ear doctors) can do for
sufferers, in some cases tinnitus will be caused by flu and cold symptoms, Multiple Scelorsis, ear infections or even stress, however the most common cause tends to be noise induced hearing loss. As of 2014 there were no effective medications and because of the sensitive nature of the ears its almost impossible for doctors to offer any kind of solution to tinnitus. In some more extreme cases the sufferer will experience pulsatile tinnitus (the sound of hearing their own pulse). The ears are sensitive, so incredibly sensitive to be precise, that any slight change in air pressure on an aeroplane can lead to experiencing immense pain. In comparison, imagine you could possess an item or a smell so strong that when you sniffed it for an extended period of time your ability to smell anything would become irreversibly damaged. Would you continue smelling said item? Of course not. That is similar to people continuing to listen to music at such a level that it endangers their hearing indefinitely. In youth culture today and with people who regularly attend concerts or “gigs” people would still rather play Devils Advocate with their hearing and refuse to wear ear plugs to protect their hearing at concerts. Musicians nowadays will not play live without protection for their ears, and yet the thousands of people listening below still refuse to. Why? Music should be beautiful, not painful. By

Aspirin could combat hearing loss A study has been launched by Cancer Research UK investigating whether high doses of aspirin can help prevent hearing loss, a common side effect from chemotherapy drug cisplatin. Around 18,500 cancer patients receive cisplatin each year, around half have suffered some
form of permanent hearing loss as a side effect of treatment, ranging from tinnitus to some deafness in one or both ears. The phase II trial, called COAST, is recruiting around 88 adult cancer patients who have been prescribed cisplatin to take part.

Scottish couples could face disputes in future if unmarried A law firm have revealed that couples in Scotland could be creating a future time bomb of messy legal disputes when it comes to their property. Philippa Cunniff, parter and head of family Law at HBJ Gateley, advises that unmarried and cohabiting couples don’t have the same rights as married couples or civil partners. Although there are basic rights provided by law in Scotland when relationships end, unmarried couples will not be protected in certain aspects of property ownership and parental rights. The number of children born into a family with unmarried parents increased from 8% in 1971 to 50% in 2013. In the UK, unmarried couples living together are the fastest-growing type of family. Philippa Cunniff said: “Lots of unmarried couples buy property together, and some also have children. In my experience though, many fail to provide for the practical issues of ownership and responsibility that come with living together. “Having a fair and current co-habitation agreement in place will assist in providing the
kind of certainty already in place for married couples. Otherwise, the risk of stressful and expensive legal disputes increases – for example, if the relationship breaks down acrimoniously or ends with the death of a partner whose family attempts to pursue any property occupied by the unmarried couple.” If a co-habitation agreement is created, it will need to be updated regularly – at events like childbirth, long term illness or retirement - or the original statement will stand if the relationship comes to an end. Philippa said: “It is important for couples to recognise that just as their relationship develops, so will the practical responsibilities associated with it. A co-habitation agreement should allow all parties to feel comfortable that most practical arrangements have already been agreed and clarified, making it slightly easier for everyone involved.”

Chinese call for tourism visa relaxation
Chinese tourists have called for a relaxation in the process for obtaining a travel visa for the UK. Chinese nationals can currently apply for a Schengen visa, which allows them to travel freely throughout 26 European countries on a single visa, however, in order to travel to the UK, Chinese must go through a further process to obtain. This inconvenience has deterred the vast majority of Chinese tourists from visiting the UK, of 10 million Chinese tourists who travel abroad every year, only 196,000 come to the UK thanks in part to the added complexity of
obtaining a visa. One Chinese tourist Mr Wang spoke about the added hassle of trying to see the UK saying: “For the British visa, I had to go all the way to Beijing to get my fingerprints done, This kind of inconvenience puts us off. Besides, Britain is only one country and a very small one at that. Most people will choose to go to Europe.”

International military operation launched to rescue Nigerian girls An international military task force made up of special forces troops from Canada, the US, UK, France and Israel has launched an operation to rescue 200 girls who were kidnapped last month by the Islamist terror group Boko Haram, whose name in the local dialect translates to “Western education is forbidden”
The girls were kidnapped in the north eastern province town of Chibok, after their school busses were attacked by Boko Haram, who according to their leader Abubakar Shekau believe that the girls should not be educated and
should instead be married off. This latest development in the case of the kidnapped girls comes a day after the populations of three villages in the north of Nigeria, repelled an attack by Boko Haram killing around 200 of the Islamist militants. The villages defended themselves by forming a vigilante militia. On the same day last week that Boko Haram were repelled, government troops fired on their own commanding general in the northeastern city of Maiduguri. It is believed that the attack was in protest of poor living conditions, a lack of equipment and poor leadership in the fight against Boko Haram.
This attack has shown how low the morale in the Nigerian military has become after a year of campaigning against Boko Haram, with little or no effect on the Islamist groups effectiveness. President Goodluck Johnson was reluctant to comment on the attack by the troops instead only confirming that an “incident” had taken place and that there was “nothing to be concerned about” for the general public. The Nigerian population are celebrating the arrival of the international task force, hoping that it will end the stalemate which has blighted the country since the mass kidnapping. By

Turkish mine disaster incites national outrage Turkey is consumed with grief and anger after an explosion in a mine in the western province of Manisa has killed between 280 and 350 miners according to different sources. The mine is reportedly owned by friends of the ruling Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has in recent months been accused of deep seated corruption by the public. This latest mining disaster is the latest in a long line of tragedies which have beset Turkish industry in the past two decades. Turkey has an extremely poor record for worker safety and in response to this latest disaster the General Workers Union of Turkey held a national strike on Thursday of last week, grinding the country to a halt. When PM Erdogan arrived at the mine in Manisa, he was met by chants of “murderer” and “thief” from an angry mob who attacked his motorcade
as he arrived. Erdogan pledged to the crowd that there will be a “full investigation” into the causes of the explosion at the mine. The explosion which killed between 280 and 350 miners, occurred during a shift change, when the mine was populated with almost double the usual number of workers. This is thought to be the reason why the death toll has been so high. The majority of deaths are thought to have been caused by carbon monoxide poisoning, due to the lifts losing power after the explosion, trapping the miners underground. Protests broke out across the country in response to the disaster, fueled by the accusations of corruption which have been rampant since February of this year when Erdogan blocked Twitter across the nation after evidence of corruption was uncovered by a user and posted on the micro blogging site. Stephen Sutton, the inspirational teenager responsible for raising, at the time of writing over £3.3 million for the Teenage Cancer Trust passed away last Wednesday 14th morning after being readmitted to hospital on the previous Sunday evening. Stephen who had been battling cancer since the age of 15 came to the nations attention in March of this year when he launched a campaign on the fundraising website Justgiving.com to raise £1 million for the Teenage Cancer Trust, a charity which aims to improve the qulaity of life and treatment for teenagers suffering from cancer. After his story went viral online, Stephen’s fundraising page experienced a surge in donations, hitting his total of £1 million within days, with some anonymous philanthropists donating four figure sums. Despite Stephen reaching his target, the donations continued to roll in, with people from all across the globe donating in a show of support, reaching 330% of the original amount by Wednesday the 14th, the day of Stephen’s passing. Stephens death was announced by his mother via the Facebook page ‘Stephens story’ through which Stephen kept his friends and followers updated on his condition and activities.
Stephens mother posted the heartfelt message: “My heart is bursting with pride but breaking with pain for my courageous, selfless, inspirational son who passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of this morning, Wednesday 14th May. The ongoing support and outpouring of love for Stephen will help greatly at this difficult time, in the same way as it helped Stephen throughout his journey. We all know he will never be forgotten, his spirit will live on, in all that he achieved and shared with so many. Love, His mom x” This announcement was met with a public showing of condolences for Stephens family and friends via social media. Before his death, Stephen was recognized by a number of public figures including the Prime Minister for his tireless devotion and selfless nature, with many members of the public calling for Stephen to be Knighted in honour of his contributions to charity and awareness of teenage cancer. Many speculators were of the belief that due to the increasing strength of the UK economy and the reduction in unemployment that the interest rates would rise sharply ahead of next years general election. Thanks to Bank of England’s confirmation of the interest rates remaining at historic lows, the Pounds value dropped by just over 10pence against the dollar within hours of Governor Carney’s announcement, climbing a little in before the markets closed.
This quarterly fall from January to March of this year is thought to have been bolstered by the number of people claiming self employment in the UK expanding rapidly in the first three months of this year. The average earnings across the board have also increased slightly by 1.7%, this is the first time since 2010 that earnings increases have outpaced inflation which in March was at 1.6% according to the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) Despite these positive figures 8.85 million people from January to March of this year aged 16 to 64 remain economically inactive, neither seeking work or available for work. This figure has seen a decline of 85,000 from October to December of last year, this is the lowest number of economically inactive individuals since 1990.
The number of unemployed young people between the ages of 16 and 24 fell in the first quarter of this year by 48,000 to 868,000, the lowest number for five years. The government has welcomed these new statistics with Esther McVey, Minister for Employment, saying: “As the recovery takes hold, more people are able to get a job or set up their own business’ and become the employers of tomorrow” David Cameron spoke about the findings via Twitter saying: “There’s more to do, but it’s welcome unemployment is down again. More jobs means more financial security for people.” These comments were balanced by BNP Paribas UK economist David Tinsley stating that the rise in employment was “disproportionately a self-employment story” going on to explain saying: “The rise in people working as full-time employees is significantly less, at 0.3% on the quarter. The proportion of people working part-time because they can’t find a full-time job is now falling, but remains relatively high.” By

Couple facing US extradition taken to hospital
An english couple who were due to be extradited to the US to stand trial for an assortment of charges including money laundering and fraud were rushed to hospital last Thursday from their home.
The couple were expected to hand themselves into a London Police station later in the afternoon to be transported to the US.
Comedian and award winning writer Caroline Aherne is currently recovering from treatment for lung cancer. A statement by Macmillan Cancer Support has confirmed that the star and co creator of the award winning Royle Family is recovering from the effects of treatment for lung cancer and will be speaking at an appeal to improve cancer care in the Manchester area and the UK as a whole on the 26th of June.
Aherne who as a child suffered from eye cancer along with her brother and later in life suffered from bladder cancer spoke of the appeal saying: “I’ve had cancer and my brother’s had cancer and we know how it affects people.” Aherne also went onto say: “They asked me to get involved and I’m really glad that I can do my bit to encourage people to speak up about where things go wrong with cancer care.” By

Living with Alzheimer’s The pain of watching the person you love disappear into the shadow of Alzheimer’s must be an impossibly hard burden for a person to bear. Looking after someone with Alzheimer’s can be one of the most difficult tasks that a family can face, yet thousands of people throughout the country deal with the situation every year.
Dementia signs Recent memory loss that affects job skills
It is normal to forget meetings, colleagues’ names, or a business associate’s telephone number occasionally, but then remember them later. A person with dementia may forget things more often, and not remember them later.
Difficulty performing familiar tasks
Busy people can be so distracted from time to time that they may leave the carrots on the stove and only remember to serve them when the meal has finished. A person with dementia might prepare a meal and not only forget to serve it, but also forget they made it.
Problems with language
Everyone has trouble finding the right word sometimes. A person with dementia may forget simple words or substitute inappropriate words.
Disorientation of time and place
It is normal to forget the day of the week or your destination for a moment. People with dementia can become lost on their own street, not know where they are, how they got there or how to get back home.
Poor or decreased judgement
Dementia affects a person’s memory and concentration and this in turn affects their judgement. Many activities, such as driving, require good judgement and when this ability is affected, the person will be a risk, not only to themselves, but to others on the road.
Problems with abstract thinking
Balancing a chequebook may be difficult for many of us. Someone with dementia could forget completely what the numbers are and what needs to be done with them.
Everyone becomes sad or moody from time to time.
Someone with dementia can have rapid mood swings from calm to tears to anger, for no apparent reason. A person with dementia can become suspicious or fearful, or just apathetic and uncommunicative. They may also become dis-inhibited, over-familiar or more outgoing than previously.
Loss of initiative
It is normal to tire of housework, business activities or social obligations. The person with dementia may become very passive and require cues prompting them to become involved. If you have any suspicions about a loved one don’t hesitate to contact your local doctor, the quicker you call, the quicker they can help. Dementia doesn’t have to be a life sentence.
Alzheimer’s is normally found in people above the age of 70 and can in many cases lead to Dementia. Dementia is the gradual progressive decline in a persons memory and progressive destruction of the victims cognitive capabilities. Eventually everyday tasks will become so difficult that the sufferer will be unable to look after themselves. There are as many as 61,000 people in Scotland suffering from Dementia in Scotland alone and 55% percent have Alzheimer’s. Scientists still don’t fully understand the causes of Alzheimer’s and so far the only known risk factor is old age, it is extremely rare for someone below the age of sixty to be even slightly affected by the disease. Each person is affected in different ways and it’s impossible to predict the symptoms someone will develop as the disease progresses. Tragically the disease is eventually fatal but can last for as much as fifteen years, Alzheimer’s slowly robs the person of their ability to complete everyday nominal activities and they
eventually succumb to things like Pneumonia at the later stages. Possible symptoms during the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease are in the early stages, the person may begin to have some difficulty with various everyday activities and abilities such as: People suffering from the debilitating condition can find themselves feeling good one day and show barely any signs of the condition and the next day struggle with the most simplest of tasks, for example failing to recognise where they live or recognise any of their loved ones. These are called good and bad days and as the disease progresses the symptoms get more severe. Until the person fails to be able to recognise the simplest things.
There are some instances of Alzheimer’s where the disease can be hereditary however these are extremely rare and usually only passes to half the children over a substantial amount of generations. This hereditary condition affects less than 5% percent of all those afflicted. Some well known people to have suffered from the disease are Discworld author Terry Pratchett, Country and Western singer Glen Campbell, Charlton Heston, Death Wish star Charles Bronson, former President of the USA Ronald Reagan and Burgess Meredith best known for his work as Micky the trainer in the Rocky movies. At the last European elections in 2009, turnout was 34.5% across the UK and 28% here in Scotland. Such a low turnout risks letting extremist parties in by the back-door and could threaten the hard-fought gains outlined above. At the very least it is bad for democracy.

With the Independence Referendum dominating the agenda, it’s easy to underestimate just how important these elections are in their own right. But Scotland needs and deserves MEPs that will work hard and always put Scotland’s interests first. People like David Martin and Catherine Stihler, who have represented Scotland as Labour MEPs since 1999. Working with their allies in the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, Labour MEPs like David and Catherine have helped to introduce new protections against misleading traders and campaigned for tough new laws guaranteeing your right to proper compensation from airlines that overbook. Labour MEPs right across the UK have also fought to enshrine workers’ rights in EU law. As a result, employees in Glasgow are guaranteed a minimum number of holidays each year and cannot be forced to work more than 48 hours per week. These are real achievements, only possible because of progressive Labour MEPs that put the hours in and always stand up
An upcoming election where low turnout is unlikely to be an issue is the Referendum. Regular readers will by now know that I support Scotland remaining in the UK because of the benefits and security it brings with regards to jobs, opportunities, mortgages and pensions. But it’s also clear that our relationship with Europe is enhanced by being in the UK. This is particularly evident when we consider that, under terms negotiated in 1984, the UK currently benefits from a rebate worth around £4bn a year. The UK also enjoys an exemption from VAT on 54 items, including food and children’s clothes, because of a long-standing agreement which does not apply to new member states. The SNP are reluctant to address these issues and its clear why – even they know that leaving the UK would mean a smaller voice for Scotland and a worse deal from the European Union. No amount of spin and deflection can disguise these simple facts.

And thank goodness they cancelled the plan to blow up the Red Road flats for the opening ceremony on 23rd July! Whilst it is exciting that thousands of people will be flocking to the East End in the summer, this does mean there will be some disruption at least for a couple of weeks. However, the Games are giving a real boost to the area. So I guess we have to put up with some disruption around the Games themselves. One concern is transport. Which roads will be closed? THE WEEM WITCHES It would be nearly two years now since I put a proposal to Pittenweem Community Council to raise a modest monument with the names of 26 of its fellow citizens on it but the motion and idea failed. You see these 26 fellow citizens of Pittenweem were all charged with Witchcraft with 16 being burnt at the stake two dying under the torture process and another was beaten and killed by a mob while the authorities sat back saying “do what you wish to her” A horrific barbaric spectacle where the husbands after the Witch burnings as if there humiliations weren’t enough by now, were handed bills…. bills to cover the costs of torture and the wood supplied to burn your wife…(can this be where the phrase “money going up in flames comes from?) Pitteweem on the Fife East coast was once the 12th richest town in Scotland, a thoroughfare of wealth earned from exporting coal, wool (spun and raw), beer and of course salted fish. It discovered its first witches in 1593. A woman called Janet Loquhour who was charged tortured and burned in St Andrews. This was followed by David Zeman in 1597, a few months’ later 4 more….Janet Foggow, Beatrix Forgesonn, Janet Williamson and Fritte Gutter. The hunt for Witches in Scotland properly started in 1563, with Mary Queen of Scots Witchcraft act; it had followed from her cousin Queen Elizabeth of England’s bill 6 months earlier. Thousands of bewildered dementia struck individuals, midwifes losing still born bairns, peculiar behaviour and people practicing the old pagan religions would now make easy pickings for accusations of Witchcraft. Not to say
the well off like Lady Foullis (1590) or the Earl of Bothwell (1591.fled the country) or say the rich Advocates daughter Euphame Mac Calzean in 1590 would escape the hunts and suffer the charges also. The rich once confessed under the tortures were burnt and fanatical preachers would carry out Queen Marys witchcraft bill to the full….”no person seek only help response or consultation at any such users or abusers foresaid of Witchcraft under pain of deid” it was now an undefendable act! In the bill all property and belongings of a Witch whether a castle, house or land once the accusation of Witchcraft was found, the properties would be split 50/50 between the church and the civil authorities. It could be a very profitable venture. Pittenweem didn’t stop there…finding in 1643…Margaret Kingow, Margaret Horseburgh, Janet Anderson, Mrs Dawson and two Mrs Wandersons accused of Witchcraft…All were burnt and bills given to their husband still survive…. £4 to £40 was the bills depending on how long your wife took to collapse and confess through the expenses of a torturer. Here is a wee technique you can try if you’re ever in a situation where you need to get a true sense of things: Carry with you three small counters like the ones used in the game of tiddlywinks: Green, Blue, and Black. Holding them in your hand allow them to passed through your fingers without looking at them, look closely as someone that really draws your attention and imagine that you are picking up on their energy levels and getting a sense of “true or false”. If you end up with Green at the top, and it feels good then it’s a
done deal, if the top colour is black be extra cautious, as there could be some clouded areas and missing elements, which might spell disaster. Blue is for clarity and communication, depends on where this lies in the pile can be an indicator of how clear and true the communication you’re receiving is, the closer to the top of your pile the better. Its not rocket science but then it doesn’t need to be, following your intuition should be like child’s play so have a go and see for yourself.

Beginning last month in April and continuing to August, Chemikal Underground created the ambitious East End Social to link the East End of Glasgow with the festivities of Glasgow’s super summer of 2014. Bringing the areas in Glasgow less known for their bustling nightlife. Areas such as Bridgeton, Calton, Duke Street and Damarnock, focussing the limelight directly on them, bringing a sense of pride back into the East End of Glasgow. Places that have been known to be culturally introverted in recent years.

A mild winter may be the reason for an increase in parasitic ticks, says the Mountaineering Council of Scotland (McofS). Hillwalkers have said to have came across a large number of ticks whilst on treks in Scotland. The mountains saw heavy snow fall, however areas lower down were considerably milder. Heather Morning, MCofS mountain safety advisor has see it for herself whilst on a camping trip.
Supermarket giant Morrisons has revealed that they will be offering cruelty-free beauty and personal care, starting this summer. The store was awarded the Leaping Bunny mark by Cruelty Free International for its policy on animal testing. Martyn Jones, group corporate services director at Morrisons, said, “We have been clear in our opposition to animal testing for many years and I am pleased to announce that after months of work with Cruelty Free International we are now certified under the Humane Cosmetics Standard. “This certification builds on our core values and sends a clear message to our customers that we are committed to promoting ethical standards.”
She said “Relaxing at the camp site after a day on the hill, we noticed several ticks on our feet and during the following week found several latched onto our bodies even though we had thoroughly checked ourselves when we got home. “The dog didn’t escape either. A man who was videoed kicking a cat has been arrested after police found him through an internet campaign through the social networking site, Facebook. The video shows Andre Robinson kicking the cat around 20 feet in the air, in front of a group of friends. He was arrested by New York Police Department for aggravated criminal assault after the video went viral after being shared by thousands. It has been said that the cat was found safe and well, however police officers revealed they are still looking for it.

People in Scotland have been urged to visit the NHS information site for advice on how to manage hay fever. So what exactly is hay fever, and what causes it? Pompeii - More of a minor eruption Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington stars in Pompeii, a historical drama meets disaster film. The production and plot boasts a blockbuster’s ego, which is its biggest problem – it is everything you expect it to be and leaves little else to surprise the audience. The film is set during 79 A.D., when Mount Vesuvius erupted and destroyed the town of Pompeii. It follows the story of Milo, a slave turned Gladiator, whose family was destroyed during the Rebellion of the Celtic Horse Tribes. When his paths cross again with the Roman senate (Kiefer Sutherland) that ordered the slaughter of his people, he is filled with the desire of vengeance. Milo also catches the affection of a merchant’s daughter, who in a foreseeable plot twist is unwillingly betrothed to the senate. We can see that Kit’s Night’s Watch training in Game of Thrones hasn’t gone amiss here as he battles his opponents in the arena with such skill he seems almost invincible. Pompeii does not fall short on its action and the special effects are impressive to say the least. However, the film is not as emotionally provoking as it clearly intends to be. This is disappointing as its

introduction is incredibly moving, showing what at first appears to be rock and statues pans out to show the ashencased corpses of Vesuvius’ victims. In my opinion, there is too much emphasis placed on the disaster and its foreshadowing for the audience to form a strong connection with its characters. It also does not leave much room for those characters to deviate from their stock roles and develop original personalities. Sutherland’s character is perhaps the most one-dimensional of them all, a straightforward villain who has no other purpose apart from setting off a chain of events whereby Milo becomes a gladiator and preventing the lovers from escaping Pompeii in time. The ending of the film can be considered slightly redeemable in terms of getting an emotional reaction from the audience. The two lovers, in realising that they cannot bear to live on without one another, resign to their fate and let the volcano’s molten ash engulf them. When the ash hardens their bodies are sealed into an eternal embrace. The image of true, everlasting love is not lost on the audience, but still, it is no Titanic. No tissues were required in the watching of this film. By

100g softened butter • 100g soft brown sugar 1 tbsp golden syrup • 150g self raising flour 1/2 tsp vanilla extract • 50g chocolate chips

Preheat the oven to 170°C Beat the butter, sugar and syrup together. Mix in the flour, vanilla extract and add the chocolate chips. Divide the mixture into about 15 pieces and roll into balls using your hands. Place well apart on greased baking sheets. Do not flatten them. Bake for about 10 mins until a pale golden colour. Leave to cool on the tray for a few minutes and then transfer to wire rack to cool. Suitable for freezing

One of the most famous castles in literature and history is up for sale in Romania.
Bran castle, the setting for Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’ and the former abode of Vlad ‘The Impaler’ Tepes, has came on the market for an undisclosed sum. The castle will not have the traditional ‘For Sale’ notice on a wooden stake in the front garden, but is instead being handled by bespoke property agency Herzfeld and Rubin of New York. For those who want to get their hands on the fortress home, it isn’t as simple as proving you can pay and moving into the crypts, instead, the castle is being sold according to a spokesman for Herzfeld and Rubin, ‘for the right offer to the right sort of person’. Whoever does pick up this relic which has stood in one form or another since the year 1200, the neighbours most certainly won’t be complaining about any noise, as the castle has 120 foot tall walls impervious to cannonball and presumably nosy neighbours.
800 acre Tanera Mòr island which is the largest island in the chain known as the Summer Isles just of Ullapool, has came up for sale for the surprisingly low amount of £1.95 million through specialist property agent Savills. PROPERTY Squatter succeeds in gaining home for diddly squat In one of the stranger stories to feature in this weeks paper a squatter has won the right to stay in a house that he had renovating after the elderly owner died.

Builder Keith Best apparently began to treat the £400,000 pound house as his own as soon as he realised that it lay empty. In a strange turn of events the High Court judge ruled in favour of Best after the owner of the property took no action after court proceedings had begun. Neighbours of the £400,000 pound house took umbrage when Keith Best in 1997 decided to claim the property for himself and set about bringing the house up to liveable standard. The previous owner’s son had not been seen near the property since 1996 after being attacked in the local area, meaning the house began to fall into a state of disrepair and vandalism. Mr Best only moved in in 2012 and

Fairy lights strung through trees add a touch of magic, while candle-lit lanterns are perfect for tabletops and positioning at the edge of borders – perfect as the days gradually get warmer and you can spend the evenings outdoors. Families panic buying properties as supply continues to fall
Prospective home-owners are apparently panic buying property as the market continues to slow down, through a lack of houses coming on the market, and an increase in demand for housing. A survey by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) found that some estate agents are seeing more than ten potential buyers chasing every property coming onto the market. It has been said that two and three bedroom homes are in particularly short supply. In Scotland 46%percent more chartered surveyors predicted that prices over the next three months would increase, rather than decrease. In London 49% percent more respondents conveyed similar expectations. Rics Scotland director Sarah Speirs said: “House prices in general look set to remain firmly on the
upward trend, however, the critical issue for the market remains the lack of second hand supply, despite a slight increase in April.
“It is too early to conclude whether this will undermine the positive trend in transactions volumes, but clearly the absence of properties to buy will ultimately be a factor in influencing the ability of people to move homes.”
Rics said estate agents sold an average of 23 properties over the last three months, the highest figure for six years. As many as 26% percent of surveyors reported increased agreed sales in three months to April.
Sarah Speirs from Rics Scotland said “That said, despite the disappointing trend in instructions, a net balance of 45% of surveyors expect to see sales levels increase as we head into the summer.”

After the announcement last week from the Governor of the Bank of England Mark Carney, that interest rates would remain at “historic lows for some time to come”, many speculators are currently fearing the worst for the long term sustainability of the property markets, fearing that this will usher in a new boom and bust cycle for the UK property market. However, these fears are being allayed by the new stringent checklists and financial catastrophe stress tests which are being carried out not only on banks but potential mortgage holders. The tests for new mortgage applicants involves analysis of the applicants lifestyle, how they see their finances changing in the future and whether they could withstand an interest rate hike of 7%. This is in order to prevent a further series of what are known as NINJA (No INcome, Job or Assets) loans, which were what triggered the collapse in the market in 2008.
The banks are also on the receiving end of probing questions from the Bank of England, with banks being told that they must have enough capital set aside to withstand a 35% drop in property prices over night and a limit being placed on the amount of money they can lend. These measures are being put into place in order to prevent a new insolvent banks fiasco, with which comes the risk of private investors and customers losing everything and the public purse being utilized to bail out floundering banks. This new set of restrictions on rampant money lending is appearing to take effect, with house sale approvals falling by 17% in the first quarter of this year. However, the question remains, will we see yet another boom bust cycle thanks to a complacent Bank of England and marauding banks or will we see stable sensible growth in the property market? Only time will tell.

Scotland welcomes the classic car world for bi-annual event The 2014 Scottish Malts Classic Reliability Trial and Tour has been won by Mark and Sue Godfrey in their immaculately prepared MG B. Fifty-three cars started the event from Gleneagles Hotel, Auchterader on Monday 28 th April, the route took in many of Scotland’s iconic roads and passes, the winning margin after 1072 competitive miles was just 22 seconds. Running over five days and finishing on Friday 2 nd May in Gleneagles,
The Scottish Malts is a round of The Hero Cup in association with EFG International Bank; it was also part of The Golden Roamer Trophy for Navigators series. The event was partnered by Hagerty classic car Insurance, DD Classics, Gleneagles Hotel, Octane magazine, Motors TV UK, Orianda 1937 and HERO Arrive and Drive. Day 1, Gleneagles to Loch Lomond.
An air of expectancy was apparent as the crews assembled for the start of the event, competitors from 13 countries worldwide were taking part in what is fast becoming a „must do’ event. At exactly 08:30, Markus and Brix Kirchgeorg led the event away, the Swiss couple taking part this year in their immaculate 1934 Bentley 3 1⁄2 litre Sports. Last year’s winners, Graham Walker and Sean Toohey were the first of the fancied competitors to lose time. A mistake from the usually meticulous Toohey saw the Chester based crew drop 24 seconds in their Lotus, handing the lead immediately to the Godfrey’s. The route today was an easy introduction to classic rallying, many of the crews taking part had never competed, and the organisers, Historic Endurance Rallying Organisation (HERO) included a practice section to ease newcomers into competitive rallying. Starting out from Gleneagles, a loop north to Crieff, and then west towards Lomond saw the event pause for breath overnight at Cameron House Hotel.
Day 2, Loch Lomond to Skye.
A beautiful dawn over the Lomond Shores greeted “The Malts” as the event pushed north; however, a reroute had to be instigated on the very first section, Glen Fruin, as a farmer was herding 50 plus cattle along the narrow road! To avoid any collisions and injury to the cattle, event director Peter Nedin skilfully re-routed the competitors, his knowledge of local roads ensuring that The Malts was not delayed, and the second driving test of the day, the formidable “Rest and be Thankful” section could go ahead on time. The Malts has two distinct sections, the Trial and the Tour, the Trial section is competitive with both driving and regularity sections to determine the winner. The Tour follows the same route, but participants do not compete and are free to explore the wonderful attractions and sights that Scotland offers. From “Rest” The Malts wound its way past Inveraray heading up to Oban, a regularity section along Glen Lonan taking the crews to a fantastic lunch at The Falls of Lora. Leaving Oban behind the competition was hotting up, Richard Dresner and Colin Mackenzie were having the drive of their career in their E-type Jaguar, holding a very fine third place whilst Walker and Toohey continued to claw back their previous penalties. After visiting Ben Nevis Distillery in Fort William, the stunning roads through Spean Bridge and on through Glen Shiel took The Malts to the Isle of Skye for its overnight halt, the ferry trip from Glenelg to Kylerhea aboard
Day 5, Strathpeffer to Gleneagles.
MV Glenachulish was received well, a unique chance to utilise the last manually operated turntable ferry in Scotland.
Day 3, Skye to Strathpeffer.
Crews had stayed in several establishments on Skye overnight, the event restarted from Skye Airport where many crews saw a submarine in operation just off the coast of Skye. Crossing the Skye Bridge in beautiful weather gave many regular competitors to the Le Jog rally
Day 4, Strathpeffer to Strathpeffer, the distillery loop.
The Scottish Malts gets its name from visiting many of the wonderful whisky distilleries around Scotland. On one day at least, this bi-annual event will take in many distilleries, allowing competitors to view and purchase some of the wonderful spirit on offer. Thursday, day 4, saw the loop begin with a regularity just outside Strathpeffer, The Malts then visited Glen Ord, Cardhu,
The good weather came back today, and although a little chilly, the bright sunshine made the Scottish countryside come to life, it was wonderful to hear the bark of classic vehicles reverberate off the hills and Glens, at times being met by the crow of a cock Pheasant, or the “Goback” call of the Grouse on the higher moorland. A slippery test around Leys Castle, Inverness saw the event progress south via the Tomatin distillery and head to Balmoral Castle for coffee.Over the Spitttal of Glenshee and on to Pitlochry for the final two distilleries, Blair Atholl and Edradour on this year’s Malts. From here, a trip to Kinloch Rannoch and the last leg via Crieff to finish back where we started, Gleneagles. A gala dinner was held in The Ballroom of Gleneagles, with Lord and Lady Steel of Aikwood joined us, Lord Steel being the HERO Honorary Club President presented the awards to the successful crews, it was a wonderful night with an after event party going on into the wee small hours. HERO event director Peter Nedin announced the event would again take place biannually, so 2016 sees us start and
finish from Cameron House, Loch Lomond, we cannot wait to be back with the hospitality and warmth of welcome Scotland always shows.

their first chance to see the Kyle of Lochalsh in daylight, it was a sight to behold. A coffee break at Loch Carron preceded what was to be one of the highlights of the event. The chance to run over one of (arguably) Europe’s finest section of roads, Bealach na Ba, The Pass of the Cattle, Scotlands answer to the Stelvio Pass in Italy. A run through Applecross village and on to Lunch at Ledgowan Bridge saw the weather turn slightly on us, heading north via Ullapool The Malts reached its most Northerly point at Ledmore and descended back down via Oykel Bridge and a regularity section ending at Ardgay. The last control or check point was at the Dalmore Distillery where crews then made their way to Strathpeffer for the night.

This was a busy day, and one crews seemed to really enjoy, it was great to see so many taking the chance to purchase their favourite brands. It was now becoming apparent that Mark and Sue Godfrey were weathering the storm pushed on them by Walker/Toohey, but down the ranks Barrie and Roma Weir had made a mistake, not entering their time on a time card and losing two minutes, dropping them down the leader board. This was pounced on by Swiss pair Daniel Gresly and Christian Prunte, their Porsche 911 being flung round the driving tests trying to keep the following crews behind.
The successful synthesis of jet fuel from sunlight, last month has marked a revolutionary step forward in environmentally friendly fuel production and possibly lifts the proverbial sword of damocles which is currently hanging over the combustion engine.
An EU sponsored team of scientists has produced jet fuel using carbon dioxide extracted from the atmosphere and refined it using sunlight. The team have invented a method of splitting the carbon dioxide into its component parts of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and oxygen, the building blocks of combustible fuels, using nothing more than focussed sunlight to fuel the process. The scientists utilizing this process managed to produce half a litre of jet fuel, with this success they have proven that they can reliably and effectively recreate the process. The next stage in the development of this technology is scaling it up. The team have theorized that with a full scale model of their equipment that they could produce up
to 20,000 litres of pure jet fuel a day with practically no waste. This technology means we might one day produce cleaner and plentiful fuel for planes, cars and other forms of transport,’ said Máire GeogheganQuinn, European commissioner for research, innovation and science. ‘This could greatly increase energy security and turn one of the main greenhouse gases responsible for global warming into a useful resource.’ This technology is not just limited to producing jet fuel, but with a slight change in method the scientists can create diesel, petrol and hydrogen fuels. This development is fantastic news for those of us who dread the coming plague of electrically powered cars being mandated in cities across the UK and Europe as it seems with the implementation of this new process that our much maligned gas guzzlers could infact become carbon neutral. SPORT Tim Sherwood sacked as Tottenham manager
According to a study conducted by the University of Edinburgh, teenagers aged 17 should be barred from playing in the front row in seniors matches, unless they can meet stringent medical guidelines.
Welcome to my column counting down to the 40th Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in September. It may be 3 months away but it is already the talk of clubhouses up and down the country.
After only six months and a sixth place finish for Tottenham in the premier league this season, Tim Sherwood has been fired from the position of club manager. Sherwood took the helm at the Hotspurs club in December of last year from former manager Andre VillasBoas, signing a deal which would last until the end of the 2015 season.
The feeling a couple of weeks after any of the 4 majors always has the air of an anti climax. The last couple of weeks have been no exception. From a European perspective there have been some encouraging signs from Luke Donald and Ian Poulter with strong finishes at Harbour Town and The Volvo China Open. Tommy Fleetwood of England had an impressive week in the latter tournament, eventually finishing in the runner up spot behind. Alexander Levy of France.
“We agreed an 18-month contract with a break clause at the end of the season and we have now exercised that option,” said Spurs chairman Daniel Levy. Current Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino and Ajax head Frank de Boer have been slated to take over at before the beginning of next season. By

Hamish Simpson, Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Edinburgh and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, NHS Lothian, said: “Our results showed that although under-18 players were as strong as the adults in general they were unable to generate the same neck muscle force as adult players. It is likely that weak necks are a risk factor for the scrum collapsing – an event associated with serious neck injury risk. To ensure the safety of all six front row players, it is essential that they are all strong enough to compete safely.” The study which was conducted with the support of Scottish Rugby was implemented to reduce the number
of spinal injuries school age players are suffering as a result of scrummage injuries. Scrummaging is the most prevalent cause for spinal injuries amongst younger players according to the study. However, thanks to work carried out previously by Scottish Rugby and the Scottish Committee for Orthopedics and Trauma, youth rugby has already seen a massive reduction in the number of injuries thanks to changes to the way the game is played. Croatian defender Josip Simunic gets 10 match World Cup ban Croatian defender Josip Simunic will not be playing in the FIFA World Cup after being handed a 10 match ban by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) over pro Nazi chants after defeating Iceland in a play off last November. The ban has came about after Simunic chanted a slogan which was used by the Ustase regime, which controlled Croatia during the Second World War.
In upholding the ban, the CAS said: “The FIFA instances identified such words as being the war call used by the Ustaše, the Croatian pro-Nazi regime that ruled the state during World War II before being dissolved in May 1945 and found the player guilty of offending the dignity of a group of persons by using discriminatory words. Tigers Turning the Tide
The torrid start to the 2014 campaign appears to be over as the Glasgow Tigers speedway team have recently run into a stream of much improved form which has seen the club win their last two Premier League meetings in incident packed circumstances. Having lost out in their opening six fixtures, including two home reversals against rivals Edinburgh, the Allied Vehicles Tigers have eventually run into much improved form which has seen them lose narrowly away to Redcar, and then take successive Premier League wins at Ashfield Stadium against Peterborough and Redcar. The winning run has come at a cost though as rising teenage track star,
Frenchman Dimitri Berge suffered internal injuries in a horrific pile up in the final heat against Peterborough almost two weeks ago. The 18 year old has remained in hospital in Glasgow and is expected to shortly return home for a period of recuperation until he is again able to re-join his Tigers team mates later this season. The loss of the sensational Berge, who had top scored for the Tigers in the three race meetings prior to being injured, is an undoubted blow to the club and has caused team bosses to consider introducing another rider to help the team through the next phase of the season. The absence of Berge didn’t hamper the Tigers at the weekend as they still managed to take all three league points
on offer in a 51-39 win over Redcar Bears at Ashfield. Tigers young Danish reserve Anders Thomsen, the only surviving home man from last year’s squad, racked up his biggest points scoring display of his British race career to bolster his teams tally by 18 points through his efforts. This weekend attention to turns to Knock Out Cup duty as the Tigers race home and away first round ties against Hertfordshire based Rye House Rockets who eliminated the Tigers from the same tournament at the same stage last season. Glasgow have identified their other young Danish rider, Kasper Lykke, a former Rye House rider, as a key man this weekend if the Tigers are to progress to face Newcastle in the quarter finals.
