The Clutha- a celebration at the Barrowlands “from the heart and off the cuff” By Michael McDaid

In an exclusive interview with The Glasgow News, Billy Coyle, one of the key figures behind the “Clutha - A Celebration at the Glasgow Barrowlands”, gives us a unique insight into the creation of this fantastic celebration.

The celebration which remembers the Clutha’s legacy and also details the astounding support from the people and businesses affected in Glasgow, alongside several other businesses from further afield. The idea for the ‘Celebration’ was conceived after a Facebook post by Glasgow musician Dutch Rukowski in early December, suggesting that a concert should be held at the Barrowlands Ballroom in aid of the Clutha and the victims of the terrible disaster which took place on 29th of November last year. Almost immediately, John Ramsay VFX contacted Mr Rukowski promising to supply the sound for the event. After hearing of this, Billy Coyle, a member of the Barrowlands management team began contacting other people within the industry “from there it snowballed and we had the basis for the gig. Lights, sound, crew and security, all we were looking for now was the bands.” This wouldn’t prove to be difficult, Billy goes on to explain “Some of the lesser known bands on the

billing came forward automatically, then we were approached by “Big Country” and “Frightened Rabbit” who told us they would be glad to play. Then Rod Jones of Idlewild with his new band Birthday Suit volunteered, following this Alabama 3 came onboard as well, there are almost too many people to mention. All of these great people pulling through in the Clutha’s time of need.”

None of the bands, or anyone else involved in the Celebration have requested a single penny in fees. Billy told us that the only cost needed for the event is a London to Glasgow flight for Alabama 3. “It was going to cost around £9000 to get the band and their instruments on a flight but we contacted EasyJet and they cut the price in half.” Continued on page 2

After hearing of the “Celebration”, Scott Peden, singer, songwriter and actor of ‘Wee Man’ fame approached Billy and the other organisers with a heartfelt song entitled “The Clutha Lament”. Billy said of the song “He played it to us and let’s just say, it’s very, very touching.” Scott then offered to donate the song to the “Celebration”.

We reached Scott to discuss his reasons for becoming so closely involved with the event, he told us “I came into the project without a moment’s hesitation it’s something that’s close to my heart, since the Clutha is where I started my musical career taking part in open mic nights.”

Scott also told us how he’s “been using his industry contacts to get as much support for the event as possible”, he also detailed his hopes for the song, “if it can be recorded and released, I’m all for it and whatever money is made from it will go to the Lord Provosts Clutha Fund.”

When asked, what performing the song at the Celebration will mean to him, Scott told us that it will be “important, Production: Simon Jones and an intense emotional experience to production.egn@gmail.com perform a song like this, especially when it’s to help the victims and families of PublishedCGby WOS Media Ltd this tragedy.” local press ad AW 2013 copy.pdf 18/3/13 22:46:42 Editorial editorial.egn@gmail.com

Since nobody is taking a penny of any money raised, the money in its entirety will be sent directly to the Lord Provost’s Clutha Fund, which is specifically to support the victims and their families.

It was at this point, Billy tells us, he and

the other organisers contacted family members of poet, John McGarrigle, who was tragically killed in the disaster, to ask if his poetry could be presented at the event. “They kindly agreed and some of John’s poems will be read out on the night”. It was also at this point that the organisers got in contact with the families of other victims in order to ask if they wished to attend. The organizers have set aside 200 tickets for family members, victims and the emergency services. “The family members will be given their tickets free of charge, we intend to make it a good day for them and to take care of them throughout the night. We have contacted the emergency services that were involved on the night of the disaster, they will be receiving tickets as well”

Billy went on to explain the emotional attachment behind the event “The whole point is to try and show them [the victims and those who responded] that people care and we hope bringing them

together will help them. This is not just about those who were injured and those who passed away, we’ve also invited the staff members and all the other people affected by this disaster”

The concert is only one aspect of the Celebration, the team came up with the idea of holding a raffle on the night. Local business “Guitar Guitar” have donated two Fender guitars which will be signed by all the bands playing at the concert. Music stars, including Dave Stewart of the Eurhythmics and Gary Numan, have donated autographed merchandise, Bruce Watson of “Big Country” is donating a guitar.

Celtic and Rangers are also donating merchandise. Many more companies are donating their services in order to support the Celebration, including Barrs soft drinks and Radisson Hotels There will also be special heartfelt messages on screens at the event, recorded by celebrities such as Gordon Ramsay, Graeme Clark of Wet Wet Wet,

It wasn’t just bands and businesses offering their support and services. The people of Glasgow have been eager to donate their time Celebration, according to Billy “There are so many people asking us if they can help with the event, even just coming in and making a cup of tea. Everyone wants to help and it seems like nothing is too much. There are far too many people to thank, but we will be putting out a list with everybody’s names. It has been a humbling experience.”

The “Celebration” is not going to be the only event of its kind, but the beginning of a new annual tradition in Glasgow. The event organisers, in conjunction with Celtic Connections and the Barrowlands will be integral in setting up a new “Clutha Foundation.”

The Foundation aims to help underprivileged children and young people in the city, by creating music classes and offering those interested, access to musical instruments. The idea being that an annual Clutha Foundation concert will help fund this initiative and benefit the cities young people. “It’s a way of moving forward, The Clutha and The Barrowlands are synonymous with music in the South and East of the city.”

The tickets for the event are available from Ticket Scotland and online at

The Scotch Whisky Fund are particularly interested in applications from innovative or pilot initiatives which aim to test new approaches to problem drinking.

The Scotch Whisky Association has set up a new £500,000 pounds fund to help combat alcohol abuse and other alcohol related misuse. The fund accessible through Foundation Scotland is an independent charity that focuses on tackling destructive alcohol abuse in society and promoting responsible drinking. The idea of the fund is to invest in projects that will in turn reduce the harmful impact that alcohol abuse causes on a substantial amount of Glasgow’s streets and blights Scotland’s communities.

Glasgow South West MP Ian Davidson spoke passionately about the initiative “It’s vital the drinks industry recognises its responsibilities, not only to try and prevent problem drinking but also to deal with the effects and aftermath.” He continued “Thus this move by the whisky trade association is welcome. I hope that other drinks manufacturers, particularly the companies that target young people, take heed and make the same kind of lasting commitment to funding projects, especially those that deal with the lasting sometimes harmful lifelong impact that affects friends and family dealing with excessive drinking.

Charities will be able to share in a total of £100,000 pounds each year, beginning 2014 and lasting until 2018.

Applications for support of new projects can seek an award of up-to and including £10,000 pounds; existing initiatives, with a proven track record, can receive help of up-to £25,000 pounds.

The Scotch Whisky Action Fund aims to support and develop projects, initiatives and interceptive procedures that will tackle harm among young people aged eighteen and under. The initiative aims to directly benefit families and communities affected by irresponsible or excessive consumption of alcohol.

For more information on the Scotch Whisky Association visit www.scotch-whisky.org.uk To download an application form for the grant visit http://www.foundationscotland. org.uk/media/181549/SWA-ApplicationDecember13.docx

Research commissioned by the SWA revealed that if society is truly determined to combat alcohol abuse on the streets of Glasgow and Scotland then an increase in funding is needed. They also revealed that there is a need to develop existing initiatives and support new programmes to combat alcohol misuse.

One killed and four injured in weekend of accidents in Clydebank On Sunday the 26th one man was killed and another seriously injured in a single vehicle incident in the Clydebank area. The incident occurred around 11pm on Sunday night, when the car the two men were travelling left the road and hit a tree. The crash took place on the Great Western Road between the Clydebank and Drumchapel areas of the city. The Scottish Fire & Rescue Service responded to a request from Police with two fire engines, which were dispatched from the Clydebank community fire station. The crews once called upon arrived on the scene in under four minutes. According to station Commander Joe McKay his crews were forced to cut away the vehicles roof in order to allow paramedics access to the two men, unfortunately when the paramedics were finally able to give emergency treatment one of the men was pronounced dead at the scene while the other was seriously injured and taken by ambulance to the Western Infirmary for treatment. Police Scotland are requesting that anyone who

witnessed the accident should come forward and contact them via their non emergency hotline number 101. This was infact the second traffic accident that the Clydebank wing of the Scottish Fire & Rescue service had to attend in the area over the weekend of the 24th. The previous incident involved two vehicles and three women were injured in the crash. Station Commander McKay attributes some of the underlying causes of the two incidents over the weekend to the variable road conditions at this time of year and people not adjusting their driving style accordingly. McKay also went on to say: “If we all accept it can happen to us and follow Police Scotland advice for safe winter driving we can reduce the chances of being involved in a collision”. The Police offer free advice and tips on safer winter driving on the Police Scotland website. By Michael McDaid

Get Off That

Couch! Feeling run down after Christmas and New Year? Overdid it slightly with the celebrations? Already gave up on the New Year resolutions? Sounds like you need some get up and go? Well why not get up and run. You can chase those winter blues away and have fun in the process. All whilst raising money for charity.

Glasgow’s Big Fun Run 2014 is fast approaching, and it promises to be the best one yet. Where it truly is the taking part that counts, welcoming to all ages, and abilities, it gives everyone the chance to get active and have a blast in doing so.

Bellahouston Park in Glasgow Saturday 11th October will hold the 5K. Not only that but if you want to bring the family, kids below five go free and if you sign up early for the early bird offer you receive £1 pound off every entry. The 180 acre Bellahouston Park on the South Side of Glasgow is the perfect

setting for the Big Fun Run the park itself features a ski slope, sports centre and an adventure playground for those young and young at heart.

“They’re family affairs, with people across all the generations taking part. It’s not unusual to see a grandparent, mum and kids all at the start line. Lots of runners take part in fancy dress. It’s a little different to other races. It’s less about the testosterone charged athletes charging home in record time. It’s about mums with prams, dads with toddlers on their shoulders, Fred Flintstone racing his granny around the track, whilst one of the 101 Dalmation’s runs alongside them, it’s remarkable, unbeatable and all for a good cause.”

Lesley Buchanan last year raised £615 for Saying Goodbye, a nationwide group which organises remembrance services for parents who lose a baby and supports families through their loss.” She spoke fondly of the organisation “I miscarried three children and Saying Goodbye helped me immensely with my loss so this cause is very close to my heart. I thought that I could help others through a tough time by volunteering. Last year my two year old niece joined in the run alongside me, she might have been the youngest

runner taking part in Britain. She did so well.” The Big Fun Run was created by the company GSI, who also host the Edinburgh Marathon. Festival.Prices for participation are £11.49 per adult, £9.49 for children and runners over 65. Kids under five run free and every participant who finishes gets a medal, goody bag and refreshments. The early bird runs until February 23. For more information or to enter Big Fun Run 2014 visit www.bigfunrun.com

Big Fun Run director, Neil Kilgour said “If you’d love to get more active in 2014 then this is a great place to start. It’s strictly for fun and it’s all about the easy relaxed enjoyable exercise. It doesn’t matter how quickly or slowly you go. You can run, jog, juggle, dress up, take a buggy. It’s up-to you.”

The Big Fun Run, which last year raised more than £200,000 pounds for charity, starts in Glasgow at 11am, is only one of eighteen Big Fun Runs staged across the UK, beginning from July and running across the entire summer calendar, until October 2014. Nationwide more than 7,000 people took part in the Big Fun Run events last year and this year they are hoping for an increase in participants. John Mason MSP for Calton calls for government intervention on subsidence Calton’s MSP, John Mason, has called upon the Scottish Government’s intervention following yet another subsidence issue within his constituency.

For the third time in a row, a building or road within Glasgow Shettleston – in close proximity to Glasgow 2014 venues – has been closed due to subsidence.

In January 2012, a major strategic road in the East End was closed for six months when the building at 594 London Road was deemed unsafe.

CRANHILL CREDIT UNION Ltd

Later that year, in October 2012, part of the road surface between Celtic Park and the Emirates Arena collapsed. This meant that another part of London Road was closed for eight months – directly outside two Commonwealth Games venues. Just recently residents in Millroad Drive in the Calton area had to flee their home due to subsidence. Mr Mason has now written to both Derek MacKay MSP, Minister for Local Government and Planning, and to Shona Robison MSP, Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport, to seek the Government’s intervention. Commenting, John Mason, local MSP, said:“This is the third subsidence issue in the last couple of years - all within

a very close proximity to strategically important roads or Commonwealth Games venues. “Unfortunately the previous two cases – both on London Road - have shown Glasgow City Council to be incredibly slow to take action which is simply unacceptable. I am keen to ensure that the Council acts quickly and efficiently on this occasion, so I have written to the Scottish Government to ask what locus they have over this particular issue. “Local residents, businesses and other organisations simply can’t afford to wait five and six months for action to be taken by the local authority, so hopefully the Council and Government can move this along as efficiently as possible.”

It definitely wasn’t a case of ‘no likey, no lighty’ when two Slimming World Consultants from Shettleston, after meeting comedian and TV presenter Paddy McGuinness at an annual awards ceremony. Gillian Marshall and AnneMarie Nairn were delighted to get the chance to cuddle up to Paddy when he co-hosted the Slimming World Awards with the organisation’s chair and founder Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE. Paddy, who shot to fame in Channel 4 comedy Phoenix Nights, alongside school friend Peter Kay, before becoming a popular stand-up comedian, said he thoroughly enjoyed the experience. He added: “I have to admit the most I knew about Slimming World before the awards was a gag in Peter’s routine that refers to Slimming World as being a £1 cheaper than its competitors! Jokes aside, I was genuinely amazed to hear about what a difference Consultants like Gillian and AnneMarie make to people’s lives. At the ceremony I met lots of people who’d lost incredible amounts of

weight and it had totally changed their lives. Every single one of them told me that they couldn’t have done it without the support of their Slimming World group and their Consultant. “Before I started working in comedy I was a fitness instructor so I know how important it is to look after yourself, but equally I know it’s not always easy to motivate yourself. So, having the help and support of people like Gillian and AnneMarie to keep you on track and be there with advice when you need it really is invaluable.” Gillian, who runs a Slimming World group at St Maria Goretti, Cranhill every Tuesday, said meeting Paddy at the event, which was held at Birmingham’s International Convention Centre, was the cherry on the top of a great year for slimmers in Shettleston: “Obviously the most important thing is that the group have lost weight and improved their health throughout 2013 and I’m so proud of all of my members – many have achieved their target weights and been able do things they never thought

possible before slimming down. I can’t wait to see what 2014 holds for us and I’d love anyone who’s thinking about losing weight this year to join us. AnneMarie, who runs a Slimming World group at Methodist Church Hall, Shettleston every Wednesday, agrees: “I truly believe that Slimming World is the best way for people to take control of their weight this year. Even if they’ve struggled to stick to slimming plans in the past, I know we can help them to make a life change this time around – my members are proof of that. By making small easy changes to their shopping, cooking and eating habits while getting Slimming World support. They will overcome the challenges they face, they see a big difference on the scales, a big difference to the way they feel, and a big smile on their face!”

New exhibition ‘Diversity’ of Young Artists at Sword St Young Gallery On Friday January 21st, The Young Gallery will be launching its latest exhibition of artwork partly created by the primary five and six pupils of Garrowhill School and St Benedicts Primary. The artwork was created over the course of eight workshops, wherein inspiration was taken from prominent American artists Roy Lichtenstein and Keith Haring alongside a selection of graffiti artists. In the course of the workshops the children looked at a variety of design aspects including 2-D and 3-D pieces,

the elements of colour and shadow and using what they had learned the children went on to create a vibrant and intriguing collection of artwork which The Young Gallery hopes will: “Delight and inspire visitors to the gallery” The “Diversity” collection, will be launched on the morning of Friday the 21st between 10am and 12pm and will have a second launch time in the afternoon between 1pm and 3pm. It’s time to stand up and be counted 2014 is a watershed year in the political landscape of Scotland and Britain. 2014 is a year that could see Scotland choose independence from the rest of the United Kingdom.

However there is a problem, at this present minute, more than a million people of voting age in Scotland are not on the voting register, so unfortunately, they can’t take part in any democratic decisions that could shape the landscape of the country they live in. The organisation “Bite the Ballot” has created National Voters Registration Day (NRVD) which is set to take place February 5TH and its aim to sign up at least 250,00 new voters across the UK. The NVRD is being supported alongside Bite The Bullet by the National Union of Students, ASDA and TeachFirst its aim is to highlight the need for young people to take an interest in the Political Landscape shaping the country.

Bite the Ballot’s Scotland organiser, Liam O’Hare spoke about the ambitious initiative “There is a million people not on the voting register in Scotland alone. With the referendum approaching there will never be a better time to engage those who feel disengaged.” He continued “On National Voter Registration Day we hope to give a voice to thousands of Scots. And this is only the beginning of our combined efforts to ensure that every eligible person in Scotland will have a vote come September 18th.” For more information on bite the bullet contact Glasgow@bitetheballot.co.uk.

There will be activities and “registration rallies” across Scotland on February 5th with numerous universities, colleges and local authorities participating in the event. There is a special significance in Scotland in regards to highlighting voter apathy, as with the independence referendum fast approaching on September 18th. For the first time 16-17 year olds will have the ability to vote.

Cat has a wheelie lucky escape! The Scottish SPCA are desperately trying to reunite a cat with its owner, after it was found trapped in a wheelie bin in the Ibrox area of Glasgow.

On the 27th January the SSPCA were alerted to the distressed cat after a passer-by noticed a peculiar noise radiating from a nearby wheelie bin on Copland Road at around 6pm. The relieved cat was retrieved from the wheelie bin immediately and taken to a nearby homeless hostel to await rescue. The male ginger and white cat is now being take care of by the loving staff at the Scottish SPCA’S Glasgow Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in the nearby Cardonald area and they have affectionately named him Dusty.

Amy Robb, Animal Rescue Officer, said of Dusty “poor Dusty was found inside the wheelie bin with the lid closed.”

She continued “We are not sure whether he was scavenging for food and unfortunately fell in or whether he was put there deliberately, perhaps as a cruel prank. Luckily people from the hostel heard his meow’s and rescued him.”

Amy said sadly “He is in good health and very friendly so it’s clear to us that he was someone’s pet, we would love to reunite him with his owner, however he has no collar, and he hasn’t been micro-chipped so we have no way of getting in touch.” But Amy explained there could be a happy ending to the saga “If no one comes forward we can be sure to find him a loving new home.” If you have any information please contact the Scottish SPCA animal helpline on 03000 999 999 or contact Claire Gordon on 01383 841020.

Here at the South Glasgow News we’ve come up with 10 suggestions for the clueless Casanovas out there which are sure to set the fires of passion alight! 10. A Gourmet Home Cooked Meal and Candle-lit Dinner.

This one is a sure fire winner as you put in the time over a hot stove, in a literal labour of love. Wow your significant other with your prowess in the kitchen and woo them with a candle lit evening. Novelty apron optional. 9. Write your Partner a Love Letter Ah, the love letter. A relic of a time gone by, but still one of the most personal and special ways of showing your love and affection for that special person in your life. For an extra special touch write the letter on some scented paper. 8. A Saucy Evening of Cabaret and Burlesque Stir up the saucy side of your relationship with an evening of cabaret and burlesque. With events

becoming more and more common across the city it won’t be hard to find one on Valentines night in a venue near you.

7. Take your Partner Ice Skating Plenty of hand holding is guaranteed for you and your other half, as you both try to keep your balance on the ice. Careful though as you could end up with a few bruises neither of you planned to get on Valentine’s day. 6. Become Your Partners Servant For The Day. Start the day by bringing your beloved breakfast in bed with a bouquet of flowers on the side. Starting the day as you mean to go on, bow to your partners every whim, fulfilling every one of their needs and desires for the entire day. Optional Extra: A serving bell which may “Accidentally” find

itself in the bin the next day.

5. Have Your Partner Serenaded. Take your other half out for a quiet night on the town and surprise them with a pre-arranged live rendition of their favourite song from a local musician. Try and pick your partners favourite song if possible or at least be original, the world doesn’t need another rendition of “Your Song”. 4. First Date Round Two. Visit the place where you and your partner had your first date. Rekindle that intense passion, that has perhaps lay dormant recently and see each other through new eyes once more. 3. Weather Permitting a Romantic Picnic in the Park If the notorious Scottish weather

allows it, put on your heavy coat, pack some sandwiches and a waterproofed blanket and wax romantic in one of the cities beautiful parks

2. Highland Getaway As Valentine’s day falls on a Friday this year, why not take the opportunity to book a weekend break to the Highlands of this beautiful country. With the breath taking scenery and romantic isolation of the Highlands, you might just have to keep each other warm. 1. For the More Extravagant amongst Us For those who want to really push the boat out a trip to Paris fits the bill perfectly. Whisking the love of your life of to the city of “Amour” is guaranteed to make for a Valentine’s Day to remember for years to come.

Minister for International Security Strategy visits Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities “Many will go on Officer Training Corps to chose a career Minister for International Security Strategy, Dr Andrew Murrison watched Officer Cadets conducting Army Reserve training when he paid a visit to Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities Officer Training Corps on last night.

Dr Murrison made the trip to see for himself what goes on at the Unit, which is made up of 150 Officer Cadets from the four Universities in and around Glasgow , and 20 staff. During the evening he watched the Officer Cadets take part in their training syllabus, including field craft, tactics, planning and decision making. He also spoke to them about their experiences in the Unit and heard about their recent ascent of Mount Kenya and plans for an ascent of Mont Blanc , later this year. The visit was rounded off by a display from the Corp’s award-winning Pipes and Drums. Dr Murrison congratulated the Officer

Cadets on their enthusiasm and professionalism. He also paid tribute to the Unit’s staff, whose hard work ensured that eight Officer Cadets commissioned into the Army Reserve in the last 12 months. He said: “I have been very impressed by what I have seen here this evening; the commitment of the staff who offer this high quality training, and the dedication and skill of the officer cadets who I have met. “I hope that more of you will continue in the footsteps of your predecessors – capitalising on the knowledge, opportunities and skills you have acquired here by joining the Army Reserve.” Lt Col James Bryden, Commanding Officer of Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities Officer Training Corps said: “It has been a real privilege to host the Min ister and show off the skills, enthusiasm and commitment of the Officer Cadets.

“They carry out their training alongside their studies and what they achieve is remarkable.

Earlier in the day Dr Murrison visited academics from the University of Glasgow and members of the UK Armed Forces veterans’ community to listen to their views on defence and security within the debate on Scotland ’s future. He said: “Ahead of the vote to decide Scotland ’s future it is important that the people in Scotland are provided with all the facts. “From a defence perspective, the arguments for Scotland remaining in the UK are extremely strong. Firefighters Develop... 22 South Glasgow News | 31st January - 14th February 2014

SFRS Chief Officer Alasdair Hay and Chair Pat Watters welcomed Minister for Community Safety and Legal Affairs Roseanna Cunningham to the service’s new state-of-the-art facility.

Chief Officer Hay said: “Urban search and rescue is a highly specialised aspect of the modern firefighter’s role and this facility ensures crews from all over Scotland can develop and maintain those skills. “We all saw the courage, skill and professionalism of our USAR teams following the recent tragedy at the Clutha Bar in Glasgow City Centre, so it is important the public know our commitment to supporting our firefighters’ training in such difficult work.

Firefighters from across Scotland are developing their specialist urban search and rescue (USAR) skills at a brand new facility, which replicates the treacherous, cramped and complex scenes of building collapses and other emergencies.

The £2.4million purpose-built Technical Rescue Training Zone is the latest asset at the world-leading Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) Training Centre in Cambuslang on the outskirts of Glasgow.

Opened this month, the bespoke design means SFRS officers from every part of Scotland can train for emergencies using realistic scenarios in an area that replicates the challenging environment of collapsed structures, narrow trenches and deep sewers.

Tel: 0141 778 8335 Protect your pet from pesky parasites! The warmer months are peak season for pesky parasites like fleas and ticks. Fleas are a major source of irritation to pets and owners alike. They feed on the animal’s blood and multiply rapidly to cause an infestation. As well as being found on your pet they will live in the carpets and bedding at home. Fleas are responsible for transmitting tapeworms in pets so worming your pet if you find fleas is also advisable. Ticks are found mainly in woodland areas or on the hills and moor land but can be found in areas of long grass, especially if deer or hedgehogs are in the area. Ticks also feed on your pets’ blood and can cause serious diseases such as Lyme’s disease as well as a reaction to the bite itself. It is important never to pull a tick from your pet’s body. This can result in the tick’s head being left in the skin, causing infection, pain and irritation. Tick removers are available to ensure safe and complete removal.

Angiostrongylus vasorum (also known as French Heartworm) is a parasite that infects dogs. The adult worms live in the heart and large blood vessels supplying the lungs and can cause a whole host of problems in affected animals and if left untreated it can be fatal. The lungworm parasite is carried by slugs and snails, which are often eaten by dogs on purpose or accidentally when attached to toys or grass or in outdoor water bowls. Symptoms range from breathing problems, blood clotting problems, general weakness and depression and even sudden collapse and death. Infection can be prevented by using a specific spot on preparation, available from your vet.

Lungworm is another parasite that is becoming increasingly common. The lungworm

Flies can cause a major problem to rabbits in warmer weather. They can lay eggs around the

rabbit’s bottom if it is soiled and quickly hatch into flesh eating maggots. It is important to check and clean your rabbit’s bottom every day and seek help from your vet if at all worried. Please contact Sandyhills Veterinary Clinic to discuss the best preventative products for your pet. Not every product treats every type of parasite so we will be happy to advice on the best options for your furry friends.

“The environment facing USAR teams is often incredibly complex and hazardous. Rescuers must operate in very confined and extremely unpredictable spaces with the constant threat of collapse always a very real risk. “Working in dangerous voids within large amounts of heavy and unstable debris, USAR teams take on the immense challenge of finding,

stabilising and removing potentially high numbers of seriously injured casualties. “Construction of our Technical Rescue Training Zone began one month into the life of the new Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, and it is truly a great pleasure to see it provide Scotland’s firefighters with an unparalleled training facility. “This site allows firefighters to train in realistic surroundings, ensuring when emergencies of this sort happen anywhere in Scotland, our crews have benefited from the expertise and best practice guidance of specialist instructors and can call upon personal experience of operating in similar settings.” The newly operational Technical Rescue Training Zone includes removable stairs, collapsed floors, collapsed roofs, removable safety barriers, and a tunnel complex capable of simulating collapses in its sections. Firefighters training at the new facility will be able to practice tunnelling and shoring, hot cutting of steel, and breaking and breaching concrete, as well as conducting technical search

of hazards and victims with potentially life-threatening injuries and will be operating in highly unstable settings so, by replicating these scenes, the new Technical Rescue Training Zone will be a tremendous asset.

“With firefighters from every part of Scotland now receiving specialist training at this world-leading facility, it means expert USAR capability will be readily available wherever and whenever it is needed.” The zone also includes a wilderness rescue area, with trees planted and boulders installed to replicate a wooded hillside.

Visiting the new facility on Wednesday (29 January), Fire Minister Roseanna Cunningham said: “It is wonderful to see first-hand how investment is being used to such great affect in this world-leading training facility in Cambuslang. “Scottish firefighters are amongst the most experienced and highly professional in the world and having the opportunity to access this specialist training is a fantastic addition.

“While conventional training is important, there is no doubt that working in this new Technical Rescue Training Zone gives our firefighters the opportunity to develop their skills and use them at short notice, and as we’ve seen recently during the Clutha disaster. “Our firefighters played an important role during this incident and I also had the opportunity to visit the Johnstone Fire Control Centre earlier today to thank staff again for their hard work and dedication through the most tragic of circumstances. “Johnstone is a facility which covers calls from over 50% of Scotland’s communities – from rural to urban to the islands and across Gaelic speaking regions, and the way they handled this incident whilst also providing an excellent level of service to other communities is to be commended. “Both of these unique facilities allow firefighters and fire staff across the length and breadth of Scotland to provide Scotland with an exceptional service and to keep people safe.”

A sneak peak at the Athle

Commonwealth Games buyers which will have a decidedly family friendly ethos.

The Village is one of the most significant new urban developments in the UK, set amongst the green banks of the River Clyde and only three miles from the city centre. The development sports state of the art buildings which are set to be cheaper to heat than the average Scottish home due to the state of the art building techniques used in the construction of the homes at the Village. The homes will all have their hot water pumped to them from a central heating station within the village which will ensure the costs will be kept down for the eventual owners of the homes.

The custom built homes in the athletes’ village in Dalmarnock are set to become some of the hottest and most sought after property in the city when they are unveiled to the public in February. A Staggering 1800 people have already registered for updates on the exclusive properties. Those who have registered their interest in the

properties will be treated to ‘invitation only’, ahead of the public launch on Saturday the 8th of February, viewing appointments at the Villages Marketing Suite, which is comprised of three show homes, two sales suites and a three story information suite which will serve to answer any questions which prospective buyers may wish to ask.

Those who are intending to buy one the properties will also be able to benefit from the new Government backed ‘Help to Buy’ scheme which will enable buyers to own a new home with only a 5% deposit. After the Commonwealth Games have ended, the £150m development in Dalmarnock will transform into a unique property opportunity for families and first time

The homes which have been built and are being sold by the award winning building firms Cruden Homes and MacTaggart & Mickel are being promoted as some of the most modern properties in the country. Liz Mallon, Sales and Marketing Manager of Cruden Homes said: “The Village sets a new standard for spacious and affordable family housing. We’ve been overwhelmed by the number of registrations of interest in these homes and we are confident that potential buyers will be delighted by what is on offer in this brand new destination for Glasgow.”

The East end of the city has seen unprecedented levels of development and investment thanks to the Commonwealth Games. The developments include the Athletes Village, the new M74 motorway which links the East of the city with the rest of the motorway network. The local Dalmarnock train station has also undergone extensive renovations in order to improve services and bring the station into line with the now aspirational look that the East end is taking on. These developments are accompanied by the world-class Emirates Arena and the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, which alongside the nearby Celtic park is turning the East end of Glasgow into Scotland’s sporting hub and one of the premier major events destinations in the UK. Alongside these developments Glasgow City Council has announced the results of a review of the developments and projects which have been put in place six months ahead of the beginning of the commonwealth games, the results are extremely positive. In the report it is detailed that £307million of Games related contracts have been awarded so far, with around 60% of that figure going to Glasgow business, this figure comes in at £184million which has been directly invested in Glasgow based companies for the Games.

s are benefiting the city

The report also goes on to state how Glasgow is possibly a world first in regards to preparations for a major sporting event such as the Commonwealth Games, in that all the venues being delivered by the Council for the games have been completed and in use a year before the commencement of the game. With completion of the facilities for the events so ahead of schedule it is

a message to the world that Glasgow is not only open for business, but that the city is a world leader in international events, this image will be especially important for the city when the worlds eyes are upon the city in six months’ time. Councillor Archie Graham, Executive Member for the Commonwealth Games at Glasgow City Council, said: “This latest update report illustrates

the impact still being made by getting Glasgow ready for the Games. As we approach the home straight, we will continue to do all that we can to ensure that as many people, organisations and businesses in the city enjoy this unique legacy both now, during the Games and for many years in the future.”

“The council’s Glasgow 2014 Legacy Framework aims to make the city a more prosperous, active, inclusive, accessible, greener place, with a greater international profile and outlook.”

One of the key objectives of the Games project is outlined in the report it being that: “The council’s Glasgow 2014 Legacy Framework aims to make the city a more prosperous, active, inclusive, accessible, greener place, with a greater international profile and outlook.”

It seems after such a glowing report for Glasgow that the Games are sure to be a fantastic success and yet another reason for the people of Glasgow to be proud of their city as it flourishes on the international stage. By Michael McDaid

The stimulant, which has been linked to dozens of deaths throughout the last decade. The stimulant is known to be toxic if combined with alcohol and other recreational drugs and is especially dangerous if consumed in high doses.

Friday the 31st of January marked the beginning of Chinese New Year. This year is the “Year of the Wood Horse” and signals the departure of the “Year of the Water Snake”.

The Chinese calendar is made up of a 12 year cycle of animals known as the Chinese zodiac. The 12 animals interact with the five elements: wood, metal, fire, water and earth.

The combination of animal and element, gives believers in the zodiac predictions for the coming year, this year with the combination of horse and wood, astrologers are predicting an energetic year with a potential for conflict. Some have said that the wood element will provide fuel for the horse sign.

The second half of the year is “yin fire” which will increase the potential for conflict and increase the energetic nature of this lunar calendar based year. Feng Shui practitioner Raymond Lo told Reuters: “The upcoming Horse year is also a ‘yang wood’ year. It is said that people will stick more to their principles and stand firm. So it is hard to negotiate or compromise as there are more tendencies for people to fight for their ideals.” All of the staff at the Glasgow News would like to wish our entire readership a luck-filled, healthy, happy and prosperous year ahead. Margaret Curran MP Curran - still time for police to re-think damaging front counter plans

Margaret Curran MP has urged locals to make their feelings known about controversial plans to slash opening hours at police station front counters in the East End. In October last year, Police Scotland announced plans to reduce front counter hours at Police Stations throughout the country, including 4 in the East End of Glasgow, the final plans for the East End stations have not yet been revealed – with Police Scotland expected to make an announcement in the coming weeks. Glasgow East MP Margaret said: ‘The proposals have been flawed from the start, often drawing on incomplete data or guesswork. At two meetings I held in the East End before the New Year, local people were clearly concerned that

the reduction in counter hours was just the thin end of the wedge and would have a negative impact on the quality of local policing. I would urge people who feel strongly about this issue to make their views known to Police Scotland before it’s too late.’ She added: ‘We mustn’t forget the Scottish Government’s role in all this. After all it is their relentless drive to centralise services, combined with deep cuts to the Police budget of £120 million over 2 years that has forced Police Scotland’s hand. I have written to the Justice Secretary, Kenny MacAskill MSP, and asked that he work with Police Scotland to deal with the concerns raised by local people.’ Labour Councillor for the Shettleston ward, Martin Neill agreed with Ms Curran, saying: ‘Local people are angry that the opening times for the police counter in Shettleston are under threat and are demanding answers from the SNP government in Edinburgh. Folk in Shettleston should be able to speak to a police officer face to face whatever time of the day it is. Key to tackling crime and anti-social behaviour problems, is to ensure we have in place, strong local community policing teams. These proposals are set to weaken that link and must be reconsidered.’ Under the proposals the front desk at Shettleston and London Road Stations will close between midnight and 7am, the desk at Easterhouse Station will close between 6pm and 8am and Baillieston will close between 5pm and 9am Monday to Friday as well as over the weekend. The public consultation closed at the end of November 2013. Road was closed for eight months – directly outside two Commonwealth Games venues. And now residents in Millroad Drive in Calton have had to move out of their homes because of yet more subsidence. Of course we all know that Glasgow is built on old mine-workings and disused tunnels. So the occasional piece of ground sinking is hardly a shock. But three instances in quick succession – is that just a coincidence?

John Mason MSP When people say the world is collapsing all around them, we might think they were exaggerating. But for residents in the Calton that’s pretty much what’s happening! For the third time recently a building or road in the East End is suffering from serious subsidence. First up in January 2012, London Road was closed for six months when the building at No. 594 started to move – the Council ended up ordering it to be demolished and it is now just an empty space. Later that year, in October, part of the road surface between Celtic Park and the Emirates Arena collapsed. This meant that another part of London

However, my main concern is that Glasgow City Council seems to be incredibly slow to take action on these occasions. The Council has certain statutory powers regarding dangerous buildings. But they also have discretion on timescales for acting. My concern is that the Council has regularly lacked any sense of urgency. Do they not care that neighbouring houses may be affected? Do they not care that roads are closed for months? I want to see the Council acting quickly and efficiently on these occasions. We have not been seeing that. I have now written to the Scottish Government to see if they have any way of waking up Glasgow City Council and getting some action. Local residents, businesses and other organisations simply can’t afford to wait five and six months for action to be taken. And we could look pretty stupid to the rest of the world when the Commonwealth Games come to Glasgow.

Scottish new home registrations highest since 2007 The number of new homes registered in Scotland last year was the highest for six years – new figures from NHBC have revealed. In total 10,052 new homes were registered in 2013, 21% more than 2012 (8,327) and the highest since the pre-recession peak in 2007. Overall, annual figures for new home registrations in the whole of the UK increased by 28% in 2013, compared to the previous year. As the leading warranty and insurance provider for new homes in the UK, NHBC’s registration statistics provide significant insight on the country’s new homes market. NHBC Director for Scotland, MalcoIm MacLeod said: “I am

delighted for the Scottish housebuilding industry and everyone who has worked so hard to make 2013 such a good year. Although we are just starting a New Year we are already seeing indications that 2014 will be another promising year. The figures are proof that more people are being given the opportunity to get on the housing ladder and buy their own, brand new home, which are becoming more accessible through initiatives such as Mi New Home and Help to Buy which was only launched in Scotland at the tail end of last year.”

If you’re young free and single, have an equally adventurous other half, or just fancy a change of holiday scenery? Then why not take the trip of a lifetime and sample a culture on the other side of the world. With crystal clear waters, pristine beaches, thousands of years

Glasgow schools merge to pave way for future

Milton and Ashcraig Schools to merge

Two additional support for learning (ASL) schools in the north of the city. Milton and Ashcraig Secondaries are to merge into a new provision in the current Ashcraig building, following an extensive consultation process with parents of children who are pupils at the school and the local surrounding community. Elected members at the council’s Executive Committee met on Thursday 23rd January and agreed to the recommendations of the consultation response report.

It is proposed that the Ashcraig building will now be refurbished to create a new specialist provision which will meet the needs of the young people and families from the North-East of Glasgow and aims to be fully operational for January 2015.

Parents, staff and pupils are being asked to become more actively involved. They can do this by helping with ideas for designs and plans for the ambitious new schools. Stephen Curran, Executive Member for Education and Young People said in a statement: “This is an exciting

chance for the two schools to merge in the newly refurbished Ashcraig school building and it will increase educational opportunities for the young people who are presently pupils, and those who will attend in the future.” He continued “The new school will be structured to have two learning pathways. “

“One designed to meet the needs of the young people with complex learning needs and the other to meet the needs of young people with a broader range of learning needs.” Said Mr Curran.

Paths for All and Macmillan Cancer Support launched a unique partnership to help people affected by cancer by asking them to become more physically active during and after their treatment.

Traditionally cancer patients have been told to rest during and after treatment, however research has shown that being active during and after cancer treatment can maintain physical function, minimise the side effects of treatment and could help prevent recurrence and dying from the disease for some cancers. Being active can also help reduce the impact of side effects of cancer treatment such as fatigue, muscle wasting, decreased mobility, depression and anxiety.

Paths for All and Macmillan know that walking is the simple solution to getting people active. It’s a free, lowimpact activity that requires no special equipment and almost everyone can do it, wherever they are and it can make an enormous difference to people’s health and wellbeing. By working together to deliver a walking programme across Scotland, Macmillan and Paths for All hope to help cancer patients reduce the amount of time spent sitting down and gradually build up their levels of activity. Providing walking groups will also help people affected by cancer feel less isolated and give them an opportunity to meet others who are affected by the

disease. The groups will be completely free of charge and also available to carers, friends and family members.

Ian Findlay, Chief Officer of Scottish charity Paths for All said: ‘Simply walking more can be life-changing, helping people to feel better both physically and mentally at any time of life. When people become unwell, being active can become harder. Therefore, we’re delighted to partner with Macmillan to offer walking groups which help people with cancer to walk more and feel the health benefits. We’re excited to begin the walking programme in Glasgow and develop the Macmillan walking groups in other Scottish regions in the coming year.’ The first walking programme will be delivered in Glasgow and will be rolled out into others areas across Scotland.

People can also access support for getting into or back into physical activity on the Macmillan website www.macmillan.org.uk/movemore and helpline 0808 808 0000.

The local short walks will be delivered by trained volunteers and there will be walks taking place throughout the city.

Fire at Bute Tower

Cambuslang Three people were taken to hospital after a fire at a high rise block of flats on the 25th of January. The Scottish Fire Service responded to the fire at Bute Tower on Clifton Terrace around 9pm on Saturday night, four crews from the Clydesmill and Castlemilk stations were sent to the incident at Bute tower. The firefighters arrived to find the buildings upper floors billowing smoke and immediately took action dousing the fire which originated in the buildings bin chute. Firefighters then moved to evacuate residents and used special equipment to ventilate the smoke from the effected floors.

Two women and a man were suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation and were taken by ambulance to Hairmyres Hospital. The incident is not being treated as suspicious by the police. Station Commander Robert Deans said: ‘Even small fires can produce large amounts of potentially deadly smoke so the protection of working smoke alarms is absolutely vital to preventing tragedies”. He went on to say that “Smoke, heat and flames can all spread very quickly so, by giving an early warning of the danger, working smoke alarms save lives.”

The fire service is running a scheme in which homeowners can request a free home fire safety

visit, through the programme householders can also get advice on fire safety and risk reduction from representatives of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

“Firefighters are happy to provide friendly fire safety advice to anyone who thinks they could benefit from some expert help and many people have already signed-up for a free home fire safety visit. It’s a popular and hugely beneficial programme that sees local crews help residents take simple steps to prevent fires and get to safety if one does happen in their home.” Commander Deans also went on to say that it is very important that this advice reaches the most vulnerable members of our society such as older people and that anyone who knows a vulnerable individual should make a point of putting them in contact with the Fire Service. Firefighters conducted more than 56,000 free Home Fire Safety Visits in communities throughout Scotland during the past year, as householders embraced the SFRS Join Scotland’s Fight Against Fire campaign.

Sport Relief challenges schools and nurseries to join in the fun and games! As the nation bends, stretches and contorts itself into shape for the Sport Relief weekend, its organisers are calling on all schools and nurseries in Scotland to get active on Friday 21st March and help to raise some serious cash. For the last Sport Relief campaign, in 2012, schools and nurseries from across Scotland raised more than £290,000. In 2012, Braehead Primary School in Dumbarton, were one of the

top fundraising schools in Scotland and are firmly getting behind the campaign again in 2014. This year they will be backing Sport Relief with the pupils (and staff!) completing a sponsored run, cycle and scoot to school. This is a fantastic way of having fun and raising awareness (and money) for Sport Relief at the same time. There are loads of ways schools can get involved in Sport Relief 2014. As

always, you can organise your own Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile on Friday 21st but schools and nurseries can organise fundraising events on their own too. The free School Fundraising Resource Pack contains exclusive materials to help you organise your event. The greatest part is that all the cash raised will help people, who are living incredibly difficult lives, here in Scotland, across the UK and in the

world’s poorest countries. Aleks Leimanis, Schools and Youth Manager at Comic Relief said: “Schools and nurseries are some of the best fundraisers for Sport Relief and we are hugely grateful for their continued dedication and hard work. Schools and nurseries up and down the country have already signed up to take part in Sport Relief 2014, so come on Scotland join in the fun and games and be a part of something truly fantastic!”

One Million Children More than one million children across the UK have benefitted from Home-Start a leading charity in Britain that helps support families that are struggling with a variety of ailments ranging from isolation, bereavement, multiple births, illness or disability. Now Home-Start Glasgow South are asking local children, parents or even volunteers old and new to share their stories of Home-Start support for the national One Million Children campaign. Share your experiences online at www.home-start. org.uk/onemillionchildren

Each and every one is dedicated to giving a couple of hours each week to visit families with young children. We provide volunteers with the training and support they require so that they can make a positive and lasting difference to the lives of the families we work with. If you can spare a few hours each week to help a family give us a call or log on to our website for more information.

Teachers can get started by signing up for a free School Fundraising Resource Pack bursting with fundraising ideas, posters, balloons, stickers, as well as helpful learning resources to increase the pupils understanding of just where the money goes – for more info or to sign up visit sportrelief.com/ schoolsstuff.

Since its creation in 1973 Home-Start has helped countless families across the UK, Home-Start Glasgow South are also eager to incorporate current and former volunteers to help share their stories of helping out families that need a little bit of help. The relevance of the One Million Campaign is not lost in this time of economic uncertainty, especially with the on-going monetary and welfare cuts by the current serving Government. Rising living costs, low or stagnant incomes, zero hour contracts and the uncertainty surrounding societal employment opportunities are just some of the fears that parents face on an almost daily basis. The closure of community centres, few opportunities for children and fears about housing are also several of the other terrors facing people in this modern age of austerity. Home-Start Glasgow South, Scheme Manager, Colette Boyle, explains the importance of the family orientated charity, “Home-Start Glasgow South

has supported hundreds of families and made an important contribution to the national total of one million children.

She continued “We want to use this campaign to unite the Home-Start family from all across the country, from the many thousands of volunteers who have selflessly given their help, to the parents they have supported through difficult times. Thanks to them the children (many of whom are now adults) are now reaching their potential, thanks to the hard working staff at Home-Start. There have even been people whom Home-Start had previously supported, going on to become Home-Start volunteers themselves. Former Home Start supported Mum, Simone, is one of these people, “I was first supported in 1997 when at 18, I had my second son. I went to groups that they ran which I found really good. I was then supported in 2006 when I had a one year old son, had been in a serious car accident and left my husband and 11 year marriage. I couldn’t have moved on without the help of Home-Start.” Simone decided that she could repay HomeStart and show her gratitude to the worthwhile organisation by becoming a volunteer herself “Thanks to Home-Start I am now a support worker with disabled people. I truly don’t know where I’d be without them.” To share your story or for more information in regards to the One Million Children campaignvisit www.home-start.org.uk/onemillionchildren

Bus driver quick instincts save pedestrian from certain death A First Glasgow bus driver from Coatbridge has been praised by colleagues for his driving skills, instinctive reactions, and quick thinking that prevented more serious injury after a pedestrian stepped off a pavement - directly in front of a moving bus – because he was distracted by his mobile phone.

Driver Denis Ramsay, (61), was driving along Argyle Street towards Sandy Hills last September when a pedestrian stepped off the pavement on Trongate and walked directly in front of his bus – which was travelling at 19mph. Quick-thinking Denis steered the double deck to the side in an effort to avoid a head-on collision. Unfortunately the front nearside of the bus struck and knocked the pedestrian to the ground. Fortunately the pedestrian was discharged from hospital later that day. Driver Denis Ramsay commented: ‘I got a shock when the young man stepped off the pavement right in front of the bus I was driving. My instincts kicked in and immediately I beeped and steered away from him as quickly as I could to try and

avoid impact but there wasn’t enough time and the side of the bus clipped him.’

‘When the pedestrian’s brother called me that evening to say he’d been discharged from hospital I was so pleased to hear he was going to be ok. I felt so bad but was glad it wasn’t a lot worse. His brother couldn’t thank me enough for doing my best to lessen the impact, I’d never experienced anything like this before and I’m thankful it didn’t turn out much worse.’ Denis, who is based at the company’s Parkhead depot, continued: ‘I’ve been driving for the company for 15 years and I thoroughly enjoy my job. I hope I don’t have another encounter like that.’ First Glasgow’s managing director, Fiona Kerr, said: ‘CCTV footage obtained from the bus Denis was driving shows that his quick actions prevented the pedestrian’s injuries from being far more serious. He’s a great driver and I’m delighted that he was nominated as a ‘Superstar’, as part of First Glasgow’s internal rewards and recognition programme. ‘Safety underpins the culture at First

High Gas Bills Research released recently from renewable heating experts Innasol and analyst group Frost & Sullivan uncovered that 78 percent of domestic energy use is for heating. Yet converting your home’s heating system from fossil fuels such as oil, gas or even electricity could see your heating bills drop by more than 45 percent. The Renewable Heat Report had a detailed look at the UK’s bad heating habits and examines the easy savings that homes and businesses can make by freeing themselves from traditional energy sources and moving over to renewable heat. It shows widespread lack of awareness and even suspicion of the costs involved of switching to renewable heating solutions, despite massive savings on energy bills and an upcoming government scheme to help with installation costs. Renewable heating systems, such as biomass boilers and heat pumps, can not only save consumers money but can significantly reduce the UK’s carbon emissions.

Calculations show that the average UK household now spends a staggering £816 on their annual heating bill and have faced an average energy bill hike of 17% per year for the last decade.

Key findings from the report include: • Heating is the largest part, 78 percent of UK consumer’s energy consumption. • Heating is the largest part, 55 percent of UK businesses energy consumption. • The average household could save up to 45 percent on their heating bill.

• 38 percent of the UK’s total CO2 emission percent come from heating homes and businesses.

Work is to start on a temporary car park in Barrhead town centre. The new car park will have approximately 40 spaces and is scheduled to open at the end of March.

first-class new library, cafe, business and enterprise support, and flexible community and learning spaces. It is due to open late this year.

East Renfrewshire Council will carry out the work on the site of the former Barrhead Health Centre.

Convener for infrastructure and sustainable growth, Councillor Tony Buchanan, said: “It’s been full steam ahead on what will be our fantastic new Barrhead Foundry and at the Asda site – and it’s now full steam ahead on this temporary car park.”

It has been demolished as part of the Asda superstore development and the site will be handed over to the council on Monday. The provision of new spaces is designed to help ease pressure on parking in the town centre. Some spaces have been lost as a result of the major regeneration work being carried out.

• UK homes are the least energy efficient in modern Europe, due to ageing housing stock.

Work started late last year on the creation of the new £3.8m Barrhead Foundry at Barrhead Sports Centre, and on a new £20 million Asda superstore next door.

• UK remains dependent on fossil fuels, with 95 percent coming from non-renewable sources.

Barrhead Foundry will be a state-of-the-art community hub with enhanced sports facilities,

Banning smoking in cars to protect children’s health – good for motorists’ finances too

A Labour plan to ban smoking in cars carrying children is due to be put to a vote in the House of Lords later. But smoking at the wheel can also lead to serious financial implications on top of any health issues as evidence from leading vehicle remarketing company, British Car Auctions (BCA) underlines. “The British Medical Association has previously released research showing the levels of toxins in a car can be up to 11 times higher than in a smoky bar”, said Tim Naylor of BCA. “But if drivers aren’t motivated by the health of their passengers, perhaps they will be by the diminishing health of their finances. Lighting up inside a car seriously devalues the vehicle for resale. “Presentation is one of the top factors influencing the price of used cars. So if a car is more like an ashtray on wheels,

chances are buyers will move on to find one that looks and smells fresh as a daisy.” Professional valeting can alleviate most of the effects of smoking, but is expensive and time consuming and might mean replacing some interior trim, such as nicotine-stained headlinings and repairing any cigarette burns in the cabin. In the worst cases, this can represent an investment of several hundred pounds. Naylor concluded “Motorists should avoid having a cigarette in their car, especially if they intend to sell it in the near future. This will avoid the lingering smell of cigarettes in the interior, as well as eliminate the risk of scorch marks on the upholstery or dash. All of these things will put buyers off, even if they smoke themselves.” Source - BCA Press Release

Michael Schumacher is being brought out of medical induced coma and is responding to instructions Formula One Super Star Michael Schumacher is “responding to instructions” as doctors begin to ease the driver out of his medically induced coma according to reports from French newspaper L’Equipe. It has also been alleged that the world champion has blinked during brain tests.

Citing “Sources close to Schumacher”, L’Equipe has reported that Schumacher has undergone a battery of neurological tests and has responded “positively”.

Schumacher was put into a deep medically induced coma after suffering extreme head trauma and brain injury

in a near fatal skiing incident on December 29th in the French resort of Meribel. Doctors put Schumacher into the coma as shutting down brain function after such a damaging incident can give the brain time to heal.

Petrol goes below 130p a litre for first time since February 2011

The price of petrol has fallen below the 130p mark for the first time since the end of February 2011, while diesel has also come down to its lowest price since mid-July 2012. On Sunday 19 January 2014 the average petrol price was recorded at 129.82p and diesel was at 137.27p, giving motorists some early New Year cheer. And, with wholesale prices of both fuels maintaining a low price around 101p a litre for unleaded and 105p for diesel, the RAC is hopeful forecourt prices will continue to move downwards for several weeks, perhaps taking average prices down as low as 128p a litre for unleaded and 136p a litre for diesel as the two-week pricing forecast is for a reduction of over 2p in petrol and nearly 3p in diesel. The reduction in pump prices has been led by the supermarkets which last week made a 2p a litre cut on both petrol and diesel. This has been swiftly followed by other fuel retailers across the country, leading to some of the lowest petrol prices for nearly three years.

www.cambusmot.co.uk Vehicle Recovery throughout Scotland & MOT testing station Specialising in: RAC head of external affairs Pete Williams said: “The supermarkets are demonstrating great transparency by passing on wholesale savings to motorists and, in doing so, really helping to making motoring that little bit more affordable. We are confident fuel retailers will continue to pass on reductions in the wholesale price of petrol and diesel to further ease pressure at the pumps. “Motorists often complain that prices seem to go up far faster than they come down, but this is proof that this is not necessarily the case. “We just need the price of oil to remain stable and for the pound to continue performing well against the dollar.” The price of fuel is one of the hottest topics with drivers nearly half (46%) of 1,500 motorists surveyed for the RAC Report on Motoring 2013 saying the cost of driving is still their number one motoring concern. The report also found that 78% of drivers see their car as an integral part of their lives, admitting they would find it difficult to adjust life without a vehicle. More than half (54%) said they would have a fuller social life, visiting family and friends more often, if fuel was more affordable. A supporter of the FairFuelUK campaign, the RAC strives to be the motorist’s champion by calling on the Government to drive down costs at the pumps by capping, or reducing fuel duty from nearly 58p per litre. Abused Men in Scotland (AMIS) Abused Men in Scotland (AMIS) is a Scottish organisation dedicated to supporting men who are experiencing, or who have experienced, domestic abuse. We provide a confidential and non-judgemental space for men to talk about their experiences and get the help they need. Men may feel shame or embarrassment in identifying as a ‘victim’ of domestic abuse, but this need not be the case. Any man can be affected by this issue. Domestic abuse can come in many different forms: emotional and psychological abuse; financial abuse; physical violence or controlling behaviour. Public awareness is growing and more is being done to help these men come forward and get help. Last year, 18% of all domestic incidents in Scotland were recorded as having a male victim, and these are just the incidents that were reported to the police. This figure continues to increase every year. Many more will have gone unreported. Different men will have different experiences of domestic abuse, and face different challenges. AMIS supports all men, regardless of ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, class or age. Our helpline is free to call from landlines and most UK mobile providers. Our number will not appear on your phone bill. You can call us Sun/Tue/ Thurs from 7pm – 10pm, or Mon/Wed/Fri from 12pm – 3pm. Call our helpline on 0808 800 0024. Therefore it is essential to get top quality opposition to help us get ready for the new season. It is fair to say that we have certainly managed to do that.”

He continued “I hope the supporters will turn out in good numbers to see us take on quality opposition but also to get the chance to check out our new signings as well. It will be good

to see them in action before we head off to take part in the international tournament in Cyprus.”

Glasgow City FC will be no pushovers however, having regularly competed in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Reaching the final sixteen during the 2011-2012 season and the final thirty two, last season.

Everton Team Manager Andy Spence reflected on this “We are delighted to be playing Glasgow City as part of our pre-season preparations.
