Elaine Doyle’s Killer: 20th June - 27th June 2014 | Issue 75 | Published by West of Scotland Media
Justice at last The mystery of who killed Elaine Doyle 28 years ago has finally been solved.
John Docherty was found guilty on Wednesday by a jury. at the Edinburgh High Court Docherty, a former soldier, denied killing the teenager throughout the trial. Elaine (16) was murdered in June 1986. Reports found that she was strangled to death. Her body was found naked in a lane 40 yards from her home, where she lived with her father, mother and brother. On the night of her murder the teenager attended her first disco, at the Celtic Supporters Club in Greenock, accompanied by her best friend Lynn Ryan. The pair left the club at 11pm and walked to a nearby hamburger stall before parting company and setting off home around midnight. Elaine’s body was found the next morning and the area was cordoned off by police. The body was exposed and a blanket from a police car was laid over the body to shield it from residents in the flats overlooking the lane. The blanket is another mystery yet to be solved as no one knows who put it over the body. Unfortunately the blanket contaminated the evidence resulting in difficulties for the investigation. By

n a move which seems to be aligning the long-running sports quiz with the more light-hearted, younger Skybased upstart A League of Their Own, this spin-off series A Question of Sport: Super Saturday (Saturday, BBC1, 6.50pm), shown to tie in with the World Cup, homes in more on the comedic elements of the show – as well as featuring some physical challenges, too.To ensure the laughs remain dialled-up throughout, stand-up comedian Jason Manford takes over presenting duties from Sue Barker (sorry Sue – we still think you’re funny though!), and we’re promised the guests will be a touch more celebrity-oriented
rather than purely focusing on sports stars. Don’t worry, though – if you’re starting to think it’s all too unfamiliar and you won’t recognise the show you love, one thing remains unchanged, and that’s the team captains: Matt Dawson and Phil Tufnell are still on hand to trade their veiled barbs in the spirit of true sporting competitiveness. Joining them this week are two dancers and two comedians: Strictly’s Ola Jordan and Pineapple Dance Studio stalwart Louie Spence represent the fleet-of-feet, while Shappi Khorsandi and Chris Ramsey are the masters of mirth in question.Alongside the more traditional sporting content are a few more outlandish activities,

Well, it’s a wee bit tenuous we’ll admit, but at a time when the more casual of sports fans are being tempted towards the beautiful game by the events in Brazil, it seems only fair that the less serious sports trivia enthusiasts might also be catered for by the Beeb’s flagship quiz series. Indeed, we can only imagine Jason will prove a draw for many people. He says of his

HSBC announce 200 jobs boost across Scotland
Continued from front page Police immediatedly began investigating the whereabouts of men from the local area at midnight. A witness, Martin Brown, saw her walking and a man following her with an “angry expression on his face”. In September 2012 police went round to Martin’s home to ask him if he could identify the man he saw. After 2 hours studying the faces, he eliminated nine of the 12, and then finally chose the face of John Docherty. Police paid John Docherty a visit and asked for a DNA sample. The trial heard that the DNA on Elaine’s back and face was an exact match. He was finally found guilty and will face life in prison when he returns to the High Court in Edinburgh in August to be sentenced.
Det Supt Bobby Hendren said he was “extremely pleased” with the verdict. He said: “This investigation has always been about Elaine Doyle and her family and bringing the man responsible for her murder to trial,”
“I would like to pay tribute to her mum and brother who have continued to support us throughout this investigation and I am sorry that her dad is no longer with us to hear the verdict. “I can only hope that the verdict brings them some comfort.”
Lifesaving pollution equipment found to be faulty Urgent action is being called for by environmental groups after three air pollution monitors have suffered technical failures in this year. The air pollution monitors are used to tell how much pollution is in the air. The monitors are relied on by people with serious levels of asthma and other health problems. A monitor in the west end of Glasgow on Byres Road wasn’t working for more than seven months. There was

The recruitment will see the firm take on more than 100 new project staff in its HSBC Security Services businesses in Glasgow and Edinburgh, and 85 permanent and fixed term personnel in its Hamilton contact centre. The bank have been increasing their branch footprint and headcount in places such as Glasgow, Edinburgh, Hamilton and Aberdeen thanks to

HSBC said it had seen significant growth in Scotland over the past three years. Lena Wilson chief executive of Scottish Enterprise, said “I am delighted that HSBS has taken the decision to expand their presence in Scotland creating over 200 new jobs across a broad range of roles countrywide.” She continued “This expansion is testament to the attractiveness of Scotland as a location for international corporations, thanks to the skills of our people, a competitive cost base and a well developed business infrastructure.”
Clyde Space.... A new frontier When you think of space, you think of, Yuri Gagarin, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, the Apollo missions, “one small step for man” and possibly the moon. However given as many attempts as you wished you would struggle to mention Glasgow and a company called Clyde Space as being influential in travelling to outer space or satellites orbiting the earth. Clyde Space situated at the West of Scotland Science Park, with has announced that throughout the last year they have received £3m in orders, including the US Air Force Academy and the Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy. CubeSat’s are miniaturised satellites used for space research that have a volume of one litre and weigh less than one and a half kilograms. The main aim for them is to allow smaller companies to create their own satellites at a vastly lower cost than traditional satellites. CubeSat’s tend to carry one or two scientific instruments into orbit and companies launching them can
offer regular launch opportunities in clusters of several cubes. Clyde Space have recently completed developing an advanced nano-satellite platform, which is officially Scotland first satellite, in collaboration with leading academic and commercial organisations in the UK and the rest of the world.
With more than fifty space programmes of experience, Clyde Space can support space missions at every level, from the very beginning during the conceptual drawing period, right through to completing the mission and analysing the data. From foundation in 2005 by Craig Clark, Clyde Space has exceeded all expectations, to the point were last year there was more than £3million pounds worth of orders and now the company are looking to expand by opening up premises in California, to capitalise on the booming space tech market in the USA. Currently 95% percent of Clyde Space customers are outside the UK and 80% percent are outside the European Union. By Richard Garland

Glasgow School of Art: Repair bill may cost up to £35million
Brad Pitt and Peter Capaldi have backed a campaign to raise £20 million pounds to help restore the fire damaged Glasgow School of Art’s Mackintosh building. The final cost of repairing Glasgow’s iconic School of Art building could run into the region of nearly £35 million pounds, MSP’s have been told. The blaze last month which nearly destroyed one of Glasgow’s most famous buildings, was miraculously saved as Art School Chairwoman Muriel Grey said “The most amazing almost miraculous news is that the majority of the building is still intact.” Quick thinking firefighters created a human wall to battle the blaze and saved nearly 90% percent of the structure whilst saving 70% percent of the contents. When considering the ferocity of the fire the outcome is nothing short of a miracle. With the cost expected to be met by government, insurance and also donations, Professor Tom Inns explained that “we’re looking to raise between £10m-£20m depending on what we will actually be needing to be reasonably comfortable with the situation.” With both Scottish and British Government promising to back the restoration and donations beginning to mount up, it is expected to be around the four year mark before the GSA is fully functioning at one hundred percent again. Professor Tom Inns said “We are reasonably confident because there are unknowns in that we have an insurance policy on the building-the
building is well insured” Sadly something that isn’t insured is the hard work that every student enrolled in the art school put into their end of year projects. The Friday the fire took place was the final day for the students to finish their projects and now the majority of it has been destroyed. Every student affected by the fire has been awarded their degree under “mitigating circumstances” Students will also be given the opportunity to create their lost work thanks to a £750,000 financial boost toward the Glasgow School of Art’s Phoenix Bursary scheme. The Grade A rated building is one of Glasgow and Scotland’s most iconic building, the façade to the fixtures and fittings, every detail of the historic building showcases the brilliance of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The Glasgow School of Art building completed in 1909 is unique, because it is a working art school, while at the same time being a work of art. Education Secretary Michael Russell said “As well as doing very serious damage to one of Scotland’s most iconic buildings, last months fire put the future opportunities available to some of Scotland’s most talented young artists in doubt.” “The Scottish Government has pledged to help the school through this very difficult period and I am very pleased to offer financial aid for their final year students.”

Art School Students Glasgow urged to “Get Ready” to Receive Bursaries as city prepares for Games
Students of the Glasgow School of Art will be given bursaries after a £750,000 fund was set up to help those affected by the blaze in May. The Scottish government’s Phoenix Bursary scheme will help fund affected students’ short-term living costs, academic supervision and the provision of studio space. The Mackintosh building was damaged in the blaze, and MSP’s are to consider the best way to rebuild it. Education Secretary Michael Russell said: “As well as doing very serious damage to one of Scotland’s most iconic buildings, last month’s fire put the future opportunities available to some of Scotland’s most talented young artists in doubt. “The Scottish government has pledged to help the school through this very difficult period and I am
very pleased to offer financial aid for their final year students. “These are truly exceptional circumstances and no student should have their chance of potentially flourishing career affected by this awful incident. “I hope our assistance will enable a talented group of students to show resilience and successfully create a new body of work.” Many students were putting the finishing touches to their end-of-year projects when the fire started. Glasgow School of Art director, Prof Tom Inns, said: “We are grateful to the Scottish government for their generous support for the Phoenix Bursaries which will help The Glasgow School of Art support these artists in developing their practice and building a new body of work.” By

The Get Ready Glasgow campaign started earlier this week and bids to encourage residents of Glasgow to start making plans for when the 2014 Commonwealth Games come to Glasgow next month. ScotRail have also revealed they will be putting on trains with longer carriages which will accommodate an increased capacity and there will be extra late night trains, some running until after 1am, where possible. The campaign hopes to prompt people into thinking about the impact the Games will have on their journeys. Some of the options that people could consider include travelling earlier or later, walking or cycling, using a different route or car sharing (if it’s an option), on some of the busiest days. Councillor Archie Graham, Executive Member for the Commonwealth
Games at Glasgow City Council, said “Glasgow will be open for business throughout the Games, but it won’t be business as usual. Often, the easiest and quickest way to get around could be different to what you are used to doing. “For some people, that might mean walking or cycling for local journeys; while others could decide to avoid busy peaks by choosing a different route or travelling at a slightly different time of day. “Over the coming weeks, I’ll be thinking about where I need to be on each day of the Games and using this information to plan ahead. Even small changes could make a big difference.” By

Rosemary Bremner has spent six years campaigning for the Honeyman Memorial Garden in Kelvingrove Park to be renovated. The refurbished garden will attract plenty of visitors who are over for the Games. £3000 was raised by Friends of Glasgow Museums for the project, with £1000 coming from the area partnership and the rest from Glasgow City Council. Rosemary said: “He brought a lot to Glasgow. He got the copyright for the Dali painting and Glasgow has made
a fortune out of that through postcards and all sorts of things.” “I was there for the opening of the first garden and, 40 years on, it needed the revamp. The new garden is looking wonderful.” By

Scottish Water, MP slams passport delays Summer Danger causing holiday misery Glasgow South West MP Ian Davidson has written to Home Office Minister Mark Harper MP to demand an explanation for the unacceptable delays affecting passport application and renewal processing.
The summer holidays brings an endless horizon of opportunities, long nights, adventure, romance or excitement, but what about drowning, agony, pain, tragedy and death.
That’s the message Scottish Water are trying to instil into young people and parents this summer, have fun but be wary. Water can kill, and every death from drowning would be easily avoidable. Year on year death by drowning statistics have slowly been creeping up, 2012 witnessed 60 deaths which was an increase of 12% percent from the previous year. Recent findings surfaced suggesting that Scottish men between the ages of 15 and 30 are at the highest risk of drowning in the UK. The problem arguably stemming from peer pressure, male bravado and the need for young men to be seen as brave and wanting to be seen as more daring in their social group. Almost every single death associated with drowning occurred in the summer months and it’s not only poor swimmers that get into trouble, more often than not it will be the confident swimmers who over-exert, or feel brave enough to jump into rivers and streams. With the weather being bright and warm it can be very easy to misjudge the temperature of the water being plunged into, which can result in instant cold water shock. It can literally be hi-jinx and hilarity
and no more than two minutes later, gasping, hyperventilation, heart failure, and death. Carlene McAvoy community safety development officer at Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents(RoSPA) said on the dangers of hot weather and school holidays “During periods of hot weather and school holidays, there is often a rise in the number of accidental drownings, which is why it is important to be extra vigilant around inland waters, such as rivers, lakes, lochs, quarries and reservoirs.” The problem with reservoirs is although the water looks calm, because they are man made there can be undercurrents, pipes, steep banks and usually situated miles from any immediate assistance. Jane McKenzie, Scottish Water’s regional communities team manager for the area, said: “While it’s important that youngsters enjoy their school holidays and that people across Scotland take pleasure in the country’s beautiful lochs, rivers and reservoirs, it’s also vital that they stay safe. “We are reminding parents to keep their children safe and asking adults to act responsibly around watercourses.” She concluded. “the safest option is to go swimming at properlysupervised sites, such as beaches, lidos or swimming pools, although we appreciate that not everyone can get to these locations.”

Locals plan human barricade over Silverburn parking chaos Residents of Pollok are considering a protest after construction work at Silverburn shopping centre causes parking disruption.
Locals have been discussing forming human barricades across entrance roads to prevent workers from the site and staff from Pollok Health Centre parking on their street. It all started when construction work started on the clinic’s car park. A petition was signed by hundreds of locals askinf for a parking scheme to be put in place, but the council said they are unable to consider it at present. Petition organiser Gerry Johnstone, a 49-year-old tiler, said: “We’ve been left
banging our heads against a brick wall, nothing has changed. The arrogance of the drivers is becoming beyond a joke. “A number of residents are so annoyed they are talking about human blockades at all entrance roads. If something isn’t done soon, people will take the law into their own hands.” A spokeswoman for Silverburn said they were making every effort to discourage disruptive behaviour. She added: “We have provided a dedicated car park for staff working on the development and this is communicated as part of the site induction process, undertaken by Graham Construction.”
The passport chaos is hitting the holiday plans of local people, with one constituent having to pay £200 to have her child’s renewed passport couriered from the Durham office, just 12 hours before she was due to fly. Others have reported receiving conflicting information about the status of their application when contacting the service’s enquiry hotline, which is not within the agency itself but is now run by inbound call outsourcing firm Teleperformance in Central Glasgow. Mr Davidson said: “The chaos at the Passport Service is having a huge impact on the travel plans of my constituents and I look forward to a full explanation of the problems local people have been facing. “With just a couple of weeks until the start of the Scottish school holidays, it is essential that the government get a
Historic Ryder Cup note unveiled
This week in a historic first, The Royal Bank of Scotland and Ryder Cup Europe unveiled the worlds first Ryder Cup commemorative bank note. The limited run five pound note utilises a number of revolutionary new materials and processes in it’s production, including a new hybrid paper, the first of its kind in the UK or Europe which is produced using a mix of traditional cotton bank not paper and polyester. This hybrid material makes the note much more durable than standard bills, resisting staining and tearing to a much higher degree. The special run note will also feature a unique Ryder Cup shaped clear window, the first of its kind in Europe. To add to the new notes desirability for collectors, it will be the first bill

That is why I have today written to the Home Office on behalf of everyone affected in Glasgow South West to demand an explanation. “The stress and misery is compounded when contradictory advice is apparently issued on behalf of the Passport Service to my constituents and when my office is not informed of developments in each case. This is supposed to be a publicly accountable service. “It is especially important that the

Most of the notes will end up in the hands of Ryder Cup practice day and match day ticket holders, with an exclusive one for one exchange at the Gleneagles course during the week of the Ryder Cup. For those not lucky enough to be attending the event itself, the merchandising office at the Ryder Cup is releasing a number of notes for sale which will be presented in a special folio display package available to purchase for Ryder Cup attendee’s which features a slot for displaying their used ticket as well. Richard Hills, Europe’s Ryder Cup Director, said: “Bank notes are part of a stable of collectible items that
Minister shows how he is able to know what is going on under his direction when the various aspects of what is presented to the public as a single service is in fact being run by various external contractors. “Where the operational delivery of a service is separated from the enquiries side tracking them, it is essential that the left hand knows precisely what the right hand is doing at all times to prevent unnecessary delay and confusion.”
people love to buy, or give as a gift, to commemorate major events. They don’t come much bigger than The Ryder Cup and we know that many people will want that special memento to mark the time it came to Scotland.’ The bank note was designed and developed by Royal Bank of Scotland as part of the bank’s ongoing commitment to Scottish golf. The first notes are already being printed by specialist German firm Giesecke & Devrient, and the official commemorative packages are ready for pre-order via the Ryder Cup website at £20. The notes will not be in general circulation, however they will be legal currency. By

Emergency Card to Give Carers Peace of Mind A new information card aimed at giving peace of mind to carers incase they are unable to carry out their caring responsibilities is being launched by Glasgow City Council and NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde The Carers Emergency Card is being made available to carers who have been supported to develop a Carers Emergency Plan, which details the steps that should be taken in the event of an unexpected crisis to ensure the cared for person is safe and well. Developed following feedback from older carers who expressed concerns about what would happen if they were unable to support the person they care for, an emergency plan can be accessed 24-hours-a-day, seven days a week by members of the emergency services. So far 431 Carers Emergency Plans have been completed and each carer will be offered the Carers Emergency Card to carry with them at all times. Research with carers who have an emergency plan has found that having such a plan can reduce anxiety and increase confidence for carers with 98% of carers saying that having the plan has made them feel more secure and supported in their role. Councillor Malcolm Cunning, the
council’s Executive Member for Social Care, will help to launch the new card scheme and welcomed the contribution the emergency plan was already making to carers’ wellbeing. He said the introduction of the emergency card would build on the positive work involved in the emergency plan scheme and provide greater comfort for carers. Councillor Cunning said: “The emergency card is a simple and practical measure that will make a big difference for carers. Worrying about what will happen to the person they look after should anything ever go wrong is a major issue for carers. “But the card, combined with an emergency plan, will give much needed reassurance that someone will be able to step in and help out should a carer be unable to be where they are needed for whatever reason. “The emergency plan system is already delivering remarkable results with some 95% of carers reporting a reduction in stress because they have a plan in place. We want to see far more carers coming forward and taking advantage of a very straightforward scheme that will help ease one of their biggest fears.”
Easyjet Passengers Spend A Night In Glasgow Due To 12 Hour Delay
First Glasgow avoid strike action First Glasgow have announced that potential strike action by bus engineers has been averted after talks between the two parties reached an amicable decision.
The union Unite announced last week it would ballot members to move forward with industrial action after First dragged their feet on agreeing to a pay rise. However this week both parties managed to successfully negotiate a 1.2% percent pay rise and instead of balloting for strike action on the 23rd and 24th of June Unite will now recommend that they vote in favour of accepting the pay increase. First Glasgow managing director Fiona Kerr said “I’m pleased that
The flight, which was supposed to arrive at Belfast International airport on Sunday evening at 10pm, did not arrive until later the next day. The pilot told passengers that they were unable to land due to “problems with the lights on the runway.” The plane landed in Glasgow to refuel and stayed there until the pilot felt it was safe again to fly.
In response to the problems caused, Easyjet apologised and released this statement: “The safety and wellbeing of passengers is always Easyjet priority and we worked hard to secure hotel rooms, provide refreshment vouchers and transferred all passenger onto alternative flights free of charge.” By
Lex Harringman
The strike action would have happened three weeks before the Commonwealth Games and will not have had any overlying effect on the Games or the transport schedule in place for the Games.
With nearly one million tickets having being sold for the events, as well as the extra tourists lured to Glasgow. Glasgow’s transport system will be under considerable strain and it will be up to the engineers to guarantee the vehicles consistent durability for the duration of the fortnight period when the Commonwealth Games runs.
A new £390,000 cycle link has opened up in Barrhead thanks to East Renfrewshire Council, Renfrewshire Council, SPT and Sustrans The new path is a joint project between East Renfrewshire Council, Renfrewshire Council, Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) and Sustrans.
It links onto Renfrewshire’s pedestrian and cycle network, giving local residents access to safe pathways.
The delay inconvenienced and angered many of the passengers. One passenger was forced to miss his brother’s funeral. Another passenger described it as the worst flying experience he had ever had.
“The only way this dispute was going to be resolved was through positive dialogue and I’m pleased that through (arbitration service) Acas we were able to do so.”
Talks are still ongoing with Glasgow Subway operators S.P.T for extra pay during this years Commonwealth Games.
Get on your bike at Barrhead
The new 600-metre pathway, for pedestrians as well as cyclists, runs along Caplehill Road into Renfrewshire’s Brownside Braes.
What should have been a short, simple flight from London Gatwick to Belfast ended up being delayed by 12 hours and meant that passengers had to stay overnight in Glasgow.
we’ve made swift progress and hope that our engineers endorse their union’s recommendation to accept the pay award.”
From there, it also allows cyclists to safely access the National Cycle Network. It is something both councils have been keen to see provided for some time, and residents have also made requests for the path. East Renfrewshire and Renfrewshire Councils worked jointly to create it with both Sustrans and SPT helping fund the work. Councillor Jim Fletcher, leader of East Renfrewshire Council, said: “It’s great to see the completion of this missing link that now gives our residents safe access to a wide network of paths. “All four partners have worked together on this major project to deliver this and we know from the comments we’ve had that it will be popular.
“I hope to see lots of people trying it out, particularly as we head into the summer holidays.” Councillor Chris Gilmour, Deputy Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Environment Policy Board, said: “We are happy to have played a lead role on this collaborative project between the two councils. “With the assistance of funding from SPT, we have delivered the final part of this cycle route, which is part of a much longer route running through south Paisley before connecting to the national cycle route network at Fulbar Road. “We are fortunate that here in Renfrewshire we have an excellent network of cycle paths and we would encourage young and old cyclists to continue to make use of them as much as possible.” John Lauder, National Director of Sustrans Scotland, said: “We are pleased to see this path linking Barrhead with
the south of Paisley officially opened. Sustrans Scotland contributed £162,000 towards its installation through our ‘Community Links Programme’ – a grant funding scheme which provides money for the creation of cycling network infrastructure for everyday journeys across the country. “The new path provides an excellent off-road facility for people to use for day trips and for leisure purposes. Seeing Renfrewshire Council and East Renfrewshire Council working in partnership across their boundaries to ensure it successful delivery was particularly inspiring. It is fantastic that Barrhead and Paisley now have a safe walking and cycling path linking them together.” Jim Coleman, SPT Chair said: “SPT is delighted to support projects such as this. One of our key aims is to promote active travel and encourage as many as possible to leave the car behind. What better way to do that than to create a safe environment with dedicated spaces for cyclists to use for work or leisure.”

Warning for tourists -
beware of motorway thefts
Isis insurgents march on Iraq’s main refinery Islamic extremist militants Isis have attacked Iraq’s largest oil refinery over the course of Tuesday night and Wednesday, the outcome of the conflict at the facility is still unclear.
British tourists have been advised to be careful when driving in Barcelona, as they could be targeted by highway thieves. With more than 11 million Brits travelling to Spain last year, it is a favourite among holidaymakers. The AA have revealed that more than 120 drivers from Britain have been victims of robbery whilst driving on the AP-7 motorway in Barcelona. Thieves have been waving cars to stop and distracting them, usually making the tourists believe there is with something wrong with either their car or the tourists and asking them to get out the car to look at it. While the brits are distracted, one of the thieves will steal possessions out their car. Rosie

She said: “If you travel at a slow speed, just make sure you’ve got people around you before you stop.” It appears that thieves target hire cars or cars with a GB licence plate. A Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) spokesman said: “It is the beginning of the peak summer season, when many thousands of Britons will be driving foreign-registered or hired vehicles across Spain. “Distraction techniques can be very effective with honest people who think they are being helped by a good Samaritan - when in fact these criminals are the opposite. “We want people to be aware, wary and not be caught out.” By

Suicide bomb attack on Nigerian World Cup Screening
On Tuesday night, an outdoor screening of the World Cup in the Nigerian city of Damaturu was attacked by a suicide bomber, who detonated a tricycle taxi packed with explosives next to the venue. According to reports several people were killed and scores were injured in the blast. The attack was carried out by the radical Islamic group Boko Haram, who have achieved notoriety recently by kidnapping over 200 school girls in the north of the country. This is not the attack of its kind in
Nigeria, Boko Haram have during past sporting events attacked venues where people congregate to watch the games. Rescue efforts are currently ongoing, with emergency services being hampered by the fear of further blasts as one of Boko Harams preffered tactics is to time secondary explosive devices to detonate, killing those who have arrived to assist the victims. In the past fortnight, attacks by Boko Haram have killed 40 people across the northern regions of Nigeria, where the government has imposed a state of emergency for over a year. By

The Baiji oil refinery is the largest in Iraq, with 100% of it’s output for domestic use, if the the Isis militants succeed in capturing it will cause much of the country to grind to a halt as fuel shortages and power cuts hit. The tactic of capturing refinery facilities has worked well for Isis in recent months as it’s funding has swelled due to their control of oil fields and refineries in Syria. Isis militants are also threatening to march on the nations capital Baghdad, from their new base of operations 40 miles north in the city of Baquba. The Iranian president has pledged the support of the Iranian people but does not foresee the presence of Iranian troops on Iraqi soil in any significant numbers. On Wednesday evening, Iraq’s beleagured president Nouri al-Maliki, formally requested that the US

Ukrainian president unveils peace plan President Petro Poroshenko has unveiled a plan for a unilateral ceasefire by Urkrainian forces in the splintered eastern regions of the country, where they have been combating armed pro-Russian separatists for the past two months.
Porochenko hopes to secure the support Russia’s president Vladimir Putin with the new plan, after a week of tense negotiations between the two nations. Poroshenko spoke at a military academy in Kiev outlining this latest plan to solve the problems in the east of the country saying: ‘The plan will begin with my order for a unilateral ceasefire. I can say that the period of
the ceasefire will be rather short. We anticipate that immediately after this the disarming of the illegal military formations will take place.’ It has been reported that Poroschenko spoke to Putin late on Tuesday, where the possibility of a ceasefire was discussed. The Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, has said that the ceasefire should in fact be permanent also saying: ‘the step President Poroshenko has promised and which in general we were all waiting for’. However, despite Kiev’s decision to call a ceasefire, it’s unclear how the separatists will react to the offer of a ceasefire as many have controlled

There is an assumption that if the separatists in the eastern regions do not disarm and disperse by the end of the ceasefire, Ukrainian military forces will conduct a final assault on the remaining pockets of resistance. Big Brother defends its right to mass surveillance of British public
NATIONAL NEWS ROUNDUP
Prime Minister urged to help innocent man jailed in UAE A charity has asked David Cameron to help a student who has been jailed in the United Arab Emirates for possession of cocaine worth less than £5.
Ahmad Zeidan, 21, from Reading denies the drugs were his and said he was tortured and forced to confess. He said the document was in Arabic and that he couldn’t understand it.Mr Zeidan claims he was beaten and threatened with rape.
This week, Whitehalls top security official and director of the Office for Security and Counter-Terrorism, Charles Farr, confirmed for the first time that the government is practising mass, indiscriminate surveillance of social networking, email and phone calls both within the UK and outside it’s borders. Farr justified the legality of the governments surveillance program which indiscriminately violates the privacy of innocent people and suspects alike on a massive scale by the security services, saying that such communications are deemed to be ‘external communications’ under current legislation. Under the current legislation, the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA) which has been called ‘outdated’ by critics, so called external communications are not protected by law and as such do not require the issuing of a warrant in order to give the security services the right to intercept them. Farr’s defence of the practice is detailed in a 48 page document that was released on Tuesday of this week by Farr. In the document Farr develops a legal interpritation of the current RIPA legislation which allows the government to side step the need for traditional privacy safe guards. The document penned by Farr was released in defence against a case brought before the Investigatory Powers Tribunal, by anti surveillance group Privacy International, Amnesty International and a number of other civil rights groups. The bulk of the cases against the government relating to GCHQ (Government Communications Head Quarters) have been brought to bear since Edward Snowden released what have been dubbed ‘The Snowden Files’ which detailed how the US
and UK governments had conspired to carry out mass surveillance on communication networks worldwide. Theresa May has waded into the debate, acknowledging that the government has failed to bring the public round to the case for mass surveillance in a bid to assuage national security threats. The home secretary also admitted that the question of individual privacy has ‘became a much more salient question that a year ago’ going on to attempt to justify the mass harvesting of personal information saying: ‘There is a need to get out there more generally the importance of intelligence in fighting all of these national security threats. We will try to find innovative ways of getting the importance of these activities to members of the public. The home secretary has also suggested that her controversial ‘Snooper Bill’ which allows the police and security services to breach civil liberties with impunity by allowing them to track mobile phone and internet usage should be revived. The communications and search giant Google has attempted to instil a sense of confidence in its users privacy, through offering ‘end to end’ encryption to anyone using Gmail that signs up for the service in an attempt to prevent government’s and other parties from accessing the content of your inbox and sent mail. The encryption service remains in its beta stages but aims to be released to the mass market as an extension in the near future. Toddler dies in house fire a year after brother’s cot death A three year old girl has died after a fire tore through her home in Carmarthen, Wales last weekend. The tragedy happened a year afterthe death of her sibling. Events surrounding the death are being looked into, as it took 40 minutes for an ambulance to arrive, but Police officers had already taken the girl to hospital. Angel and her mother were rescued by firefighter and her father escaped by jumping out a window.
Home Secretary Theresa May has apologised over the delayed passport applications and insists that the government is doing everything it can to deal with the situation. She stated in a commons debate that there has been an unusually high demand for passports, and the passport office was dealing with the highest demand in 12 years. She said: “I would like to say to anybody who is unable to travel because of a delay in processing their passport application that I am sorry and the government is sorry for the inconvenience they have suffered and
we are doing all we can to put things right.” “What we don’t know at the moment is what an urgent need to travel will mean and whether everybody who’s got holidays coming up will now be guaranteed that they’ll get their passports in time, which is what we want, or whether you’ve got to prove something additional. “We know there are still a lot of people having an awful lot of problems.” She also said that despite delays, the majority of applicants are still receiving their passports within three weeks as usual. Family friend Lisa Naether said: “We were in total shock when we heard, especially as it was the anniversary of her baby brother’s death.” Angel was taken to the town’s Glangwili Hospital by police but was later transferred to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff where she died. Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire MP Simon Hart was one of many who spent more than 20 minutes attempting to revive Angel while they waited for an ambulance to arrive. Well I’ll tell you, it’s pure brutal to say the least, honestly looking at all the happy faces and people with sunglasses on made me want to paint a picture of Copacabana beach on the kitchen wall for the sake of my sanity, I swear chefs should be worshipped, since we’re some of the toughest animals alive.
My usual antisocial response would be “Whit? I’ve just done a 13 hour shift, ma feet are in bits, ma face is meltin’ and if I see another person taking about how good a time they had at Kelvingrove park, I may just explode and chuck maself oot mid journey and hope, hope tae god I die on impact.” But sometimes ye canny say what you really want as these dudes got a job to do as well, so I settle for the old game of catch me if ye can, every time the conductor moves away I put ma feet up, every time they look over I take ma feet down, a mean I could do this for 12 stops easy just to have the pleasure of rebelling and prove the point, that ma feet and those seats are happening and no ones gonna ruin the last good part of my long over due placement of my derrière and intensely swollen beetle crushers.

Ma kinda Vice! Recently I had Vice News, filming me in my kitchen and doing a show and tell about my Irn Bru pulled pork and notorious buckfast ice cream. Needless to say I was well chuffed when I got contact from then about it as I’ve worked my backside of for many a year and never expected anything I did to be picked up. So when they finally arrived I was more hyper than a three year old who just smashed a bottle of blue Smarties and washed it down with 4 cans of Irn Bru. So here’s what went down, they wanted to come into the kitchen and film the making of the pork, it was hilarious, since I kept swearing like a mad man from all the excitement and pure adrenaline of having a full camera crew and presenter in my dungeon of insanity. It was one of the most memorable experiences of my life and one I’ll never forget. It reminded me that all the hours spent and personal time consumed by what I love and how all and that if you stay true to your beliefs things usually pay off in the end. The episode of vice Munchie’s should be ready for human consumption at the end of July for all to see prob the most proud but self cringe-worthy footage of the Mad Chef himself in aw his Glaswegian glory. Mental health recovery Sculptures website launched designed by
prisoners for fire stations
John McCormack (far left), and Simon Bradstreet (far right) from the Scottish Recovery Network are joined by author Linda Gillard and mental health campaigner Robin Ross to launch Write to Recovery.
A new website has been launched to empower people affected by mental health problems. The site, called Write to Recovery, designed by the Scottish Recovery Network (SRN) was launched by renowned ‘indie’ fiction author Linda Gillard. The first of its kind in Scotland, Write to Recovery helps people create and take control of their own personal stories. It responds to a growing body of evidence around the important role that writing, sharing, listening to and learning from others plays in the recovery journey. Michael Matheson, Minister for Public Health, said: “The Scottish
Recovery Network should be praised for creating the Write to Recovery story-sharing website. It will give valuable support to people with mental health issues on their journey to recovery. “It’s important to remember that although a quarter the Scottish population will experience a mental health problem at some point in their lives, recovery is not only possible but likely. This website will aid that recovery by helping people to realise they are not alone.” SRN promotes and supports recovery from mental health problems. They facilitate change by sharing ideas and practice. Their goals are to help increase: knowledge
and understanding of recovery, empowerment of people affected by mental health problems and recovery focused policy and practice Simon Bradstreet, SRN Director, said: ‘When SRN was launched ten years ago we were confident that the best way to raise awareness of the reality of recovery from mental health problems was to find ways to share and learn from personal experiences. That confidence has proved well founded and Write to Recovery offers an important new tool as we continue to push for a Scotland where mental health recovery can be a reality for all.’ For more information go to www.writetorecovery.net
St Alberts Mela Magic
Using funding from the Lottery Commonwealth Celebrate fund, St Albert’s was proud to host the inaugural Southside Mela on Saturday June 14th 2014. Our multi-cultural event was free to enter and the Pollokshields community turned out in numbers to experience all on offer. Pupils were involved in all stages of the planning and implementation of the event. Measuring the site, writing to businesses, making signs for information, timetabling pupils, staff and performers, organising and introducing acts in their own languages and resourcing, making, pricing and selling their own products! A wonderfully diverse entertainment
programme saw pupils introduce acts performing from all corners of the globe. Performers included Affy R, Rameet Kaur, Lord Munmeet, the Ayawara Drummers, the Royal Dhol Force, The Jit Jive Trio and The Achill Sound. An eclectic range of music, covering genres from Reggae to Bangra, from African Beats to Irish Traditional music. But the biggest crowd and cheer of the day had to be for St Albert’s very own Bangra dancers! 33 stalls from local businesses and charities offered products ranging from
food, jewellery, bags, stitched outfits and health and beauty products, many of which sold out. There were lots of fun activities to participate in including arts and craft activities, come and try sports, facepainting and the bouncy castles. An amazing event enjoyed by all who attended! Congratulations to staff, parents and pupils and members of the Pollokshields and wider community! By

Community fire stations across Glasgow will be home to lasting symbols of the 2014 Commonwealth Games thanks to the on-going partnership between the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS), the Scottish Prisons Service and Glasgow Life. A series of sculptures created by prisoners at HMP Barlinnie will be installed in each of the city’s 11 stations, with the first officially unveiled at the beginning of the week at Cowcaddens. Depicting three athletes standing on a medal podium, the life-size metal frame figures reflect both Glasgow’s industrial heritage and its promising future. Group Manager Ian McMeekin welcomed guests to the unveiling ceremony. He said: “There is huge excitement ahead of the Commonwealth Games and communities throughout Glasgow across Scotland are certain to put on a tremendous welcome for athletes and
visitors from around the world. “This sculpture is a welcome addition to Cowcaddens Community Fire Station and, along with the others that will be installed over the coming months; it will help deliver a lasting legacy for every part of this city. “It’s important to remember that firefighters are very much part of the communities they serve and, like all Glaswegians, our crews should be proud of the role they will play in delivering a spectacular, safe and memorable Games. The visits are conducted by local crews in every community in Scotland. They are easy to arrange and can be done day or night – whenever is best for the householder. To join Scotland’s fight against fire and arrange a free home fire safety visit, or to put SFRS in touch with someone you think could benefit from one, call the freephone number 0800 0731 999, text ‘check’ to 61611, or fill out a form at www.firescotland.gov.uk

CULTURE AND EVENTS
Game of Thrones’ tenth episodes usually offer its audience a chance to reflect on the season, recover from the climactic events of episode nine, and leaves us with a couple of cliffhangers not answered until the next season. Monday night’s finale, however, continues with it tumultuous plot lines, killing off notable characters like they are no more than “redshirts”. There is little doubt that this episode demonstrates the show’s repeated phrase, “Valar Morghulis”, all men must die. Episode 10 starts where 9 finished, with Jon Snow travelling beyond the wall to confront and kill Mance Rayder. He is intercepted by Mance’s guards and is brought before him. Jon demands that he surrenders, but Mance would rather strike a bargain with the Night’s Watch. He reveals that he and his wildling army seek safety behind the Wall from the oncoming winter and its terrors.

The show returns to Westeros again. Jaime breaks his brother out of his cell and the first place Tyrion goes is his father’s room. Finding his ex-whore Shae, the woman who had betrayed him, laying on the bed, he strangles her with her own necklace. It is not a murder without pain and sorrow on Tyrion’s part. This contrasts with his murder of Tywin, which is cold and full of hatred. He shoots his father with a crossbow whilst he is sat on the toilet.
Before any deal can be met, an army appears and begins to cut down the surprised and unprepared wildling soldiers. The army belongs to Stannis Baratheon. This turn in events is arguably a little random, but it could amount to something interesting in the next season. The Red Woman’s eyes seem to undress Jon as she watches him through the flames of the funeral pyre. Is she simply admiring his chiselled looks, or does it imply a story that we will have to wait for until the show’s return in April? Over in Westeros, Cersei Lannister makes another attempt to stop her arranged marriage to Loras Tyrell. When Tywin refuses to budge on his decision, she threatens to confirm the rumours surrounding her incestuous relationship with her twin brother Jaime. She goes even further by offering herself again to Jaime, knowing that he will help her remain in the city with their son. North of the Wall, Bran Stark and his companions discover the tree they have been searching for. Its red leaves stand out against the North’s bleak landscape and the sun shines through

again, the man tells him that he never will, but he will fly. What he means by this is left unclear. We can only hope that this will be one of the things answered in the next season. When they set off to find her, she returns to the Mountain. Certain that he is going to die, the Mountain attempts to provoke her into finishing him off. It is during this scene that we see a
Overall, this finale has been the show’s best so far, needing an extra few minutes to fit in all the action. It is a testament to how the series improves with each season, and hopefully season 5 continues on with this trend. The only issue I had with the episode was the sound. I found that the talking was really quiet in comparison to the score and sounds of battle. By

Danger Mouse
Returns!
After more than two decades since its last episode was aired, the BBC have confirmed that the children’s television show will be back. It is due to be broadcast on CBBC in 2015. The show is a parody of British spy fiction, following the adventures of Danger Mouse and his hamster sidekick Penfold. The voice actors for the reboot have not yet been announced, but the original series featured the voicing talents of Sir David Jason and Terry Scott for the two main characters. Its producers have revealed that there will be several changes made to the original format to make it relevant to the 21st century, including Danger Mouse’s eye patch to be replaced by a technologically-advanced “i-patch”. Maleficent Review
CULTURE AND EVENTS
Maleficent is advertised as an interesting twist on the classic tale of Sleeping Beauty, showing the untold story of its villain. The film’s trailer certainly promises a darker side to Disney and Lana Del Ray’s cover of ‘Once Upon A Dream’ possesses a haunting melody that the original song never had.
The film itself starts as a revenge story, when Maleficent places a curse upon the King’s newborn daughter Aurora after being betrayed by him and also wishing to protect her forest kingdom. This backfires when Maleficent gradually comes to love the child and realises that Aurora might one day unite the two kingdoms. When she is unable to remove her own curse, she is forced to find other ways of preventing Aurora from slipping into an eternal slumber. The special effects and Angelina Jolie’s spectacular performance will draw you into its fictional world – but only for a moment, as you will quickly find yourself falling back out of it through one of the script’s many plot holes. Scots armchair football fans urged to enjoy World Cup 2014 safely

Facebook Takes On Snapchat With New Self-destructing Message App Facebook’s new app Slingshot is now available on the iPhone and Android. It lets users send videos of up to 15 seconds and photos which can be captioned or doodled on. Users do not require a Facebook account to sign up to the app.
Its main rival is Snapchat, a similar app that also allows its users to write on images that are deleted once sent. Another competitor is Taptalk. Despite Facebook’s rejected $3bn bid to buy Snapchat last year, Slingshot’s creators insist that their app is not a clone. They point to their app’s additional features that are not found in its competitors, including a “select all” function, which allows users to send an image to all their contacts at
the same time. This was a particular feature which Snapchat deliberately did not include to avoid its users being flooded with notifications. Another feature Slingshot possesses, which has received mixed reviews, is that users cannot view an image
sent to them until they send one back. The Facebook team behind the app explain their decision for this. “With Slingshot, we wanted to build something where everybody is a creator and nobody is just a spectator.” By

Pros and Cons of Online Shopping Since its invention in the late 70s, online shopping is now more popular than ever, but whether or not it is better than visiting a real shop is still very much disputed. This article aims to provide several pros and cons of shopping online, along with a short list of tips and good websites for online shopping.
PROS:
Some of us may feel that these risks are too great and feel safer buying from a shop.
Try these sites:
Most sites are easy to navigate around and are organised into clickable categories. Shopping online is especially useful for those of us with busy schedules because we are not limited to opening hours, neither do we have to spend time travelling to the shops.
The item is not in front of you
If you are clothes shopping on a budget, this website is perfect for you. For the price you pay for your items, the quality is of a good standard and cancels out the price you pay for shipping.
Time-saving
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is urging Scotland’s armchair football fans to enjoy the World Cup from Brazil in safety. The world’s biggest and most popular football tournament kicks off today and millions of fans of the beautiful game will be watching the matches at home, at friends’ houses or in licensed premises. SFRS is keen to remind fans to bear safety in mind, particularly if they intend to cook or have a barbecue to complement the tournament’s entertainment. The service is advising people to take care if they plan to leave the house to watch a game and ensure that cooking appliances are switched off to reduce the risk of a house fire. For viewers in Scotland many of the games will be screened at night due to the time difference in Brazil and SFRS is urging people not to cook late at night, particularly if they have been drinking. Cooking and alcohol can be a deadly combination. It’s also worth bearing in mind that you shouldn’t leave rubbish lying around after World Cup parties as refuse can be an easy target for deliberate fire setting. It also increases
the risk of serious fires being started which can easily spread to homes and surrounding buildings. Director of Prevention and Protection for Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, ACO Lewis Ramsay, said: “The World Cup is a universally popular event and no doubt thousands of Scots will be watching the games live on TV. “If you are eating before going out to watch a game make sure you turn the cooker off before you go. Don’t leave pans unattended. Take them off the heat if you have to leave the room. Fire starts when your attention stops. When you have finished cooking, make sure the cooker or oven is turned off. “The kitchen can be the most dangerous place in the home. Fire can cause damage not just to your property, but more seriously can put family and loved ones at risk.” If you have not signed up for one of our free Home Fire Safety Visits you can do so and Join Scotland’s Fight Against Fire. To book a free Home Fire Safety Visit: complete our online form, call 0800 0731 999 or text “Check” to 61611 from your mobile phone.
Money-saving
It is easier to do price comparisons online as it only requires us opening up multiple sites on other tabs. In addition, some sites will allow you to organise items by their price so that the cheapest items come first. By not having to travel to the shops it eliminates fuel costs.
More to choose from
Some might argue that when you shop online, you don’t know what you’re getting. There is no way to tell if an item is deficient until you receive it. Sometimes an item, especially if it’s fragile, can get damaged during postage. There is also a possibility of it getting lost or stolen.
Tips:
Use websites that you trust and/or have a credible reputation. Read customer reviews to check if items are what they are advertised to be.
Websites typically have a larger inventory than shops. They will also tell you instantly whether or not they have the item in stock.
CONS:
Shipping costs
Many sites will charge you for postage and packaging, or will ask you to spend a certain amount before shipping becomes free. If you are doing a small shop or if shipping prices are too expensive, it might just be worth buying your items in a shop.
Protection of personal data
There are potential security risks when you share your personal data and bank details online with retailers.
Check the online retailer’s return policy to see if items can be returned easily and for little or no cost. Do not shop online using a public computer and make sure that your account has a secure password.
http://everything5pounds.com/
http://www.abebooks.co.uk/
This site is ideal for students looking for cheap textbooks, but also includes a large collection of books both old and new. Shipping is usually free depending on the book and where the seller is located. http://www.amazon.co.uk/
A well-known, popular site. It has a large inventory and sells a variety of items. If you spend over £10 shipping is free.

Star Signs

Clairvoyant, Columnist & Author Joan Charles
I am delighted to be delivering your stars although; I won’t be doing them in the traditional way, as I am not an astrologer. For many years I have provided the stars using Tarot cards and that is what I will be doing here so, I guess in a sense they should be called, Taroscopes. Anyway, I do hope you enjoy what the cards have to say.
Aries If your looking for a romance to blossom this could be the time that’s right for you to make a move and get it going – if however you are searching for a true love then look out for a chance meeting.
Taurus Surprise news comes from someone quite unexpectedly and there is a connection to the past with this also. I feel you may be looking at things from a black and white; you might need to widen your horizons to see the bigger picture.
Summer Time Readings Courses:
Introduction to the Tarot– The Law of Attraction and Psychic Development courses are on-going, so, check for dates and details.
Readings:
Tarot, Angel, Spiritual, Chakra and Tarumenology [a combination of tarot and numerology]
For details of any of the above contact Joan on mobile: 07930 697 229 or email: joan.charles@btopenworld.com
Gemini At this moment in time you could be feeling that not much is going your way however put a little faith into things changing and it could make all the difference. Burning the candle at both ends will drain your energy and stop you from seeing what is right in front of you.
Cancer It feels as if you are in the middle of the bridge half way to your new destination and leaving the past behind. Things that are worth waiting for take time and so, allow this to take shape in its own good time.
Leo Challenges and limitations are not helping you to make the moves you wanted and this could cause you some frustrations in the mean time. Try to divert your focus onto something that’s a bit more positive.
Virgo Time for reflection is not time lost; this gives you the thinking time you need to see what it is you really want and then to make a plan and go get it. Take yourself off to the movies or do something that will bring a little laughter into your life.
Libra Even though you are generous and are there when you need to be for others it may not always be reciprocated, not that you do it for that reason but when you need others I sense you feel they are other wise engaged.
Scorpio You will need to stand your ground on a matter, which concerns a male and someone who seems to think they can just step in, and dictate to you. I’m sensing the worm has turned and that you are now in the driving seat.
Competition Win a Tarot Reading with Joan Charles We will be running this competition across all of our papers for the month of June so if you want to be in with a chance of winning here is what you need to do.
Sagittarius New lines of communication are open and you will be make the most of them in order to sort a situation out that has been plaguing you for some time. I sense better times ahead all round so keep it up.
Capricorn On one hand I sense that you are not in high spirits and then on the other I see good news coming your way. I am seeing a key and for me this is about discovering something that helps you and also a possible house move too.
Aquarius Better have a nice bottle of something on chill as I’m feeling you are about to enter a new phase in life and one that will challenge you in a whole different way. This is a positive time but one that requires focus.
Pisces As they say, the truth will out and what this means is you are about to uncover something that will provide you with the answers to certain things you have been uncertain about. There is light at the end of the tunnel.
Simply answer this question;
In the Tarot deck what Major Arcana card is number 12? Email your answers to Joan at; joan.charles@btopenworld The winner will be contacted by email and you can either go see Joan for a face-to-face reading or have the reading done on the phone [on a land line] or on Skype.

On October 9th last year, the Queen’s Baton Relay was launched at Buckingham Palace. During the ceremony, Her Majesty The Queen placed Her message to the Commonwealth into the baton. The Queen then gave the baton to the first relay runner. Up to 4,000 baton bearers will have the honour of carrying the baton, including those nominated in recognition of their contributions to local sport, community and youth. At the Opening Ceremony of the Games, the final relay runner hands the baton back to the Queen (or her representative), who reads the message aloud to officially mark the opening of the Games.

The Queens Baton on its final leg The Queens Baton relay has reached its final leg after travelling a mammoth 190,000kms and visiting all 70 nations and territories of the Commonwealth. The Baton began it’s journey at Stirling University, seat of the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland and befitting the Baton’s purpose, the Scottish Institute for Sport. From there it left Scotland for New Dehli, site of the 2010 Commonwealth Games and where the Queens Baton would officially begin it’s international journey. Last Sunday after the Baton travelled across the globe, it finally arrived back in Scotland, greeted in Edinburgh with fanfare and celebration.

FRIDAY 20 - THURSDAY 26 JUNE
Opens 20/06/14
A moving, witty and life-affirming adaptation of John Green’s bestselling novel about two teenagers who fall in love at a cancer support group. Sixteenyear-old Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley) was diagnosed with cancer three years ago. She carries an oxygen tank everywhere and prefers not to sugarcoat the reality of her situation. Her concerned mother (Laura Dern) encourages her to attend a cancer support group and make friends. She makes an instant connection with funny and charming Augustus Waters (Ansel Elgort), who has a prosthetic leg and has been in remission for 18 months. Clear-eyed Hazel fears that this cannot end well, but is unable to stop herself falling for Gus. The adaptation that millions of fans have been waiting for, this is a funny, honest and heart-breaking tear-jerker. Rising stars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort were recently seen on screen together in the sci-fi hit ‘Divergent’.
Jersey Boys (15) Opens 20/06/14
Clint Eastwood’s version of the Tony Award-winning jukebox musical telling the story of iconic sixties band The Four Seasons. In the early 1960s, New Yorkers Tommy DeVito (Vincent Piazza) and Nick Massi (Michael Lomenda) form a rock’n’roll group. But it’s their discovery of the young Frankie Valli (John Lloyd Young) and his incredible falsetto singing voice that proves to be their trump card. With gifted songwriter and keyboard player Bob Gaudio (Erich Bergen) on board, this quartet from the wrong side of the tracks embark on the path to superstardom. Christopher Walken co-stars as The Four Seasons’ mobster friend Gyp DeCarlo in this eye-opening true story of the tough times and personality clashes that shaped one of the biggest bands of the era. Legendary director Clint Eastwood delivers his own distinctive take on the hit Broadway musical, with original stage star John Lloyd Young returning to play Frankie Valli.
3 Days to Kill (12A) Opens 20/06/14
Dying CIA agent (Kevin Costner) trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter is offered an experimental drug that could save his life in exchange for one last assignment.
Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie (15) Opens 27/6/14:
Brendan O’Carroll’s brilliant comic creation defends her market stall from a nasty developer in her hilarious big-screen debut. Feisty matriarch Agnes Brown (Brendan O’Carroll) runs a fruit and vegetable stall in Dublin’s historic Moore Street Market. It’s been in her family for generations and she hopes eventually to pass it to daughter Cathy (Jennifer Gibney). Then she receives a vast tax bill. Maria (Fiona O’Carroll) and Rory (Rory Cowan) embark on a foolhardy plan to raise the cash by swimming the channel. Meanwhile, our potty-mouthed heroine learns that she’s not the only one to have her livelihood and heritage threatened. A dastardly developer wants to bulldoze the entire market. Now Agnes must take on the Irish establishment - with a little help from Buster Brady’s troop of blind trainee Ninjas, an alcoholic solicitor, and a barrister with Tourette’s Syndrome!

rather than purely focusing on sports stars. Joining them this week are two dancers and two comedians: Strictly’s Ola Jordan and Pineapple Dance Studio stalwart Louie Spence represent the fleet-of-feet, while Shappi Khorsandi and Chris Ramsey are the masters of mirth in question.Alongside the more traditional sporting content are a few more outlandish activities,

including this week Matt and Phil taking a hair-raising ride on the fastest zipwire in Europe. But what’s all this got to do with the World Cup, we hear you say? Well, it’s a wee bit tenuous we’ll admit, but at a time when the more casual of sports fans are being tempted towards the beautiful game by the events in Brazil, it seems only fair that the less serious sports trivia enthusiasts might also be catered for by the Beeb’s flagship quiz series. Indeed, we can only imagine Jason will prove a draw for many people. He says of his
appointment, “I am made up to be hosting this brilliant BBC One Saturday night show. I have always been a massive fan and it’s a real honour! “Families will be able join in at home with the rounds they know and love. And they will be in for a treat, with bigger and better challenges with the country’s favourite quiz captains Matt Dawson and Phil Tufnell. “With the World Cup looming this summer, I’m hoping the UK will be hit by sporting mania and as football is one of my obsessions I’m hoping to see some legendary footballing names joining us too.” He may well get his wish, as there’s plenty of time left in the five-part series for him to meet his idols.

The British number one endured something of a frustrating time after winning Wimbledon, suffering a back injury that kept him out for much of the rest of the year, but there have been enough signs in recent weeks to suggest that Murray will once again be a serious contender for honours.

A few weeks ago I came across a new product from Origins that offer nature’s alternative to a chemical peel, I was very intrigued. So when a tub of Modern Friction™ Instant brightening pads landed on my desk, I couldn’t wait to get home and try them out. The pads have natural fruit acids which exfoliate dead skin cells, rice bran extract which comes from Asia and is known for its skin-renewing powers and essential oils including grapefruit, lemongrass and spearmint to soothe the skin.
Kaitlin McManus
Origins say that the pads “deliver the instant smoothing benefits of a professional peel without the irritation” and “improve skin’s clarity, tone and vibrancy”. They also carried out a survey which found that after eight uses (twice a week for four weeks) 73% of panelists said skin was improved and 84% said that pads felt gentler than a professional glycolic peel and that their
skin was smoother and softer. After hearing this I was keen to put it to the test. I wasn’t disappointed. After taking off my make up, gently scrubbed my face with a pad. The pads have a textured surface which gently buff the skin. My skin tingled slightly, but isn’t uncomfortable. I have used the pads twice a week for three weeks and I have noticed a difference. My skin feels less dry and I haven’t been getting as many spots as I usually do (although I am sure my daily Nutribullet juice blast might play a big part in that!). They are quite pricey, at £31 for 40 pads, but because only two pads need to be used per week, the tub will last a while. Overall, my skin is much healthier since using it and I will be continuing to do so. If you want to treat your skin without all the nasty chemicals, this is for you.

PETS The Scottish SPCA’s Glasgow Animal Rescue and Rehoming centre is hoping kind residents will be willing to offer a rescue pets a second chance at happiness. Here are four adorable guys looking to find forever homes
Name: Beano
Name: Donald
Age: 1-2 years
Age: 5 years
Gender: Male
Gender: Male
Breed: Domestic Short Hair
Breed: Domestic Short Hair
Beano is a nice boy who arrived in our care through no fault of his own. He is hoping to find a new owner who will give him the love and attention he wants and deserves along with a nice cosy bed to curl up in. Beano would suit a home with older children and have the option of going outdoors.
Donald is a nervous boy who would suit a home with older children. He arrived in our care as a stray and is now desperately looking for a new home he can relax and explore in. Donald is looking for a new owner who will allow him the time he needs to settle in and become more confident in his new surroundings.
If you think you could offer any of these animals a suitable home, please call the Scottish SPCA’s Glasgow rehoming centre in Cardonald on
03000 999 999
for more information.
Dogs die in hot cars warning The Scottish SPCA is urging pet owners not to leave their dogs in hot cars this summer, warning that last year a man in Scotland was convicted for doing so.
Concerned members of the public have already been contacting the charity’s animal helpline after seeing distressed dogs left inside warm vehicles. The Scottish SPCA is keen to remind the public that they may be risking their dog’s life by leaving it in a hot car for even a short period of time. Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn said, “Most people know what it’s like to get into a car after it’s been sitting in the sun. It’s unbearable and we immediately roll down the windows or turn on the air conditioning. “Imagine being trapped inside a hot vehicle wearing a fur coat for minutes, possibly hours, and you are some way to understanding how a dog left inside a hot vehicle feels. Many people might not realise that even on warm, cloudy days, cars can effectively turn into ovens and dogs can overheat in minutes.
Name: Sandra
Name: Tigger
Age: 1-2 years
Age: 13 years
Gender: Female
Gender: Male
Breed: Domestic Short Hair
Breed: Domestic Short Hair
Sandra is a lovely girl who arrived in our care as a stray and is now desperately looking for a new home. She would like the option of the outdoors so she can explore her new environment until her heart’s content. Sandra would suit a home with older children and is looking for a new owner who will give her the time she needs to settle in.
Tigger is a brilliant lad who would love to find a home where he can enjoy his old age. He is looking for a new home with the option of going outdoors so he can explore his new surroundings and laze about in the sunshine. Tigger would suit a home with older children, if any.
Wedding Guests Get A Ssssurpise
“Leaving a window open or providing water is simply not good enough. Dogs can’t sweat the way humans do and need to pant to cool down which can lead to severe dehydration and hyperventilation. “We run our ‘dogs die in hot cars’ campaign every year but we continue to receive a large numbers of calls from concerned members of the public each summer and we fear some owners don’t fully appreciate the danger they are putting their pets in. “Causing an animal unnecessary suffering is an offence and last year a 54 year old man from Glasgow was convicted after leaving his two dogs inside a hot vehicle in the height of summer. He was banned from keeping animals for ten years and his two jack russells were not returned to his care as a result. “Our advice is to leave dogs at home as it is simply not worth the risk.”
A Florida kingsnake caused a stir at a wedding in Glasgow’s east end on Saturday when guests spotted the threefoot long serpent slithering through the grounds of a church.
“Apparently Vince caused quite a stir at the wedding and gave the guests a real fright.
The Scottish SPCA were called out to rescue Vince, as he has now been named by rescue workers after one of the stars of the film Wedding Crashers. He is currently in the care of the charity’s Lanarkshire Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Hamilton.
“We think there may be someone in the area missing their snake and they’ll no doubt be surprised when they hear what he’s been up to.
They are now working hard to recover his owner. Animal Rescue Officer Jan Toraman said,
“When I arrived Vince had slithered into a nearby garden and he wasn’t very happy to be rescued.
“Anyone who recognises Vince should give us a call on 03000 999 999. “If no one comes forward for him we’ll find him a new home.” By

Homelessness will increase caused by bedroom tax
The amount of people without a home is likely to increase due to the impact the ‘bedroom tax’ has had, suggests new report. The report, published this week by the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations (SFHA), revealed that despite help from their landlord, it is becoming more difficult for people to continue to live in a property. The SFHA found that two out of three housing associations had seen a rise in the number of tenants looking for a transfer to another property after the introduction of the bedroom tax. SFHA Policy Manager David Ogilvie said: “We are seriously concerned about how welfare reforms are impacting upon homeless households taking up new tenancies. It’s
abundantly clear that the odds of these households being able to secure and sustain a suitable tenancy are being increasingly stacked against them. “Despite social landlords’ best efforts to provide as much help as they can to new tenants - be that in terms of making sure tenants have the basic essentials or the right advice and support - our research shows that the cumulative impact of the ‘bedroom tax’, benefit sanctions and problems accessing financial assistance at times of crisis may drive up homelessness in Scotland. “We would echo the words of the Welfare Reform Committee in its recently published report – we need a welfare system that is supportive, not punitive.” By

Top tips for upcycling in the home!
Why upcycle? Upcycling is becoming an increasingly popular way to turn something rubbish into something fabulous. Upcycling is an even greener way of recycling – you find a new purpose for your unwanted items before you throw them away. Why chuck something in a landfill when you can use it for something else? Here are our top tips for making something amazing out of items lying around the home...
wine? Don’t chuck it out, use it as a candle holder. Champagne or posh wines give a sophisticated look, while spirit bottles like Jack Daniels give a hip vibe. Buy tapered candles (the long ones) and shave the sides of the ends off with a sharp knife until it fits in the bottle. Melt the end of the bottle and it will stick in. Make sure you sit it on a candle mat or an old coaster as the wax will run!
Got an old set of drawers that have seen better days? Give it a buff and a lick of paint. A great idea is to paint the drawers in chalk paint. It is perfect for the kids room, they can write on the front of the drawers what belongs where!
If you need a bright notice board why not make one? Transform that cheap corkboard with some nice material. Cover the board in the material and staple at the back. Glue some fake flowers or diamantes in the corner, depending on the look that you want. Don’t underestimate the power of nice material. Covering lampshades, armchairs and pouffes will update them and give them a new lease of life.

and come across an old slogan or gig t-shirt/sweatshirt that you can’t bear to throw away, make it into a cushion! Cut the sleeves off, turn it inside out and sew up three sides. Leave a space at the top to and sew a zip on. Put the cushion in and voila! Funky cushion that will definitely be a talking point! Don’t throw anything away unless you can’t do anything with it. If an idea doesn’t come to you straight away, play about with it. Have a look online for inspiration. Some ideas are a coffee table made from a door and an old bath could be made into a couch. Another great idea is using a wooden pallet on its side makes a great herb planter. Fill the spaces with soil and plant some seeds – great if you don’t have much garden space, it could even be used on a balcony. By

Mortgage affordability House prices growing at longest rate in four years improves across UK
According to a new study released by Halifax, mortgages have become more affordable everywhere in the UK except for London and the South East of England over the last five years. The figures released by Halifax reveal that in the last five years, mortgage repayments have fallen by an average of £100 per month nationwide. The figures reveal the combined impact of lower mortgage rates, increased average earnings and house price changes over the last five years, which have created some of the most favourable market conditions for mortgages in years. The greatest mortgage reductions are found in Northern Ireland, where new payments are £2,880 per year less than they were five years ago. New Scottish mortgage holders are paying £980 less than they were five years ago, while those in the North of England are paying £780 less. As a result of the lower payments, new mortgage payments account for 28% of income, down almost 3 percentage points (2.7%) from 2009. This is also massively down from the high point of the market in 2007, when 48% of income was
spent on mortgages. Craig McKinlay, Mortgage Director, Halifax said:“In the majority of regions, mortgages are substantially more affordable today than they have been in years. In fact, new mortgage borrowers are spending far less on their mortgages than the highpoint of the market in 2007, when people were spending close to half [48%] of their income on their mortgage. Public sector workers in particular have benefited from higher wages over the last five years, with double digit earnings growth in some areas of the UK contributing to substantially improved figures for mortgage affordability. With only £500 separating the average salaries of both sets of workers, the public sector has achieved what would have seemed unlikely five years ago – parity with the private sector. Scotland is the clear winner for mortgage affordability for both public and private sector workers, with a mortgage there only taking up an average of 18% of a new public sector salary, which is substantially less than the UK average.” By

The average prices for houses in Scotland are growing at the longest sustained rate for four years, according to a recent report. In April, an average price of £161,402 was recorded. It seems that the boost in the housing market has not been affected by the independence debate, according to the report. The figures were contained in the house price index for April from LSL Property Services and Acadata. Gordon Fowlis, regional managing director of Your Move, an estate agency chain that is part of LSL, said: “April marks the eighth successive month that house prices have risen in Scotland, the longest run of monthly gains witnessed for four years.
“One thing that could potentially upset the apple cart is the independence vote, having passed the 100day milestone, kick-starting the countdown. While the Yes and No campaigns debate which outcome will leave households financially better off, many are already feeling the purse strings loosen. “Any uncertainty surrounding the fiscal, taxation or currency implications of an independent Scotland have not dented the confidence of homebuyers - in fact areas such as Stirling have seen sales soar by 52% over the last 12 months. “The steep increase in the sale of properties during March and April is 10% above the usual seasonal trend. A six figure sum is to be spent renovating the City Mortuary as a lost property store. Police Scotland have advertised for builders to convert the building near the High Court in Glasgow. Police bosses are set to spend £350,000 on the conversion on the red-brick building.
Facing Glasgow’s Saltmarket, it was once the scene of public hangings. The post mortems of victims of notorious serial killers Bible John and Peter Manuel were carried out in the old City Mortuary. The mortuary was put out of use and replaced by a new facility at the city’s Southern General Hospital.
The news comes not long after Chief Constable Sir Stephen House said in April that Police Scotland faced a shortfall of between £10million and £50million in their savings projections for the coming year. Staff cuts, control room closures and restricted hours are included in the proposals to help cut the deficit. By

Historic wonderland council house up for sale. A three bedroom former council house which has been described as a historic wonderland has been put up for sale by its owner.
John Trevillian, who has owned the property since 1990, began transforming the unassuming 1930’s semi detached from a regular family dwelling into what he has described as a ‘historic wonderland’. Mr Trevillian has made it his mission over the past 23 years to create his dream home, complete with rooms based on a Moorish palace, a Cambodian treehouse, a New York office and a Scottish Edwardian hall and bedroom. The ex-council house appears completely normal from the outside, but within is a treasure trove of artifacts, around 1,700 to be precise, imported from 27 countries and coming in at an estimated total of £500,000, all of which come together to create a hodge podge of
historical periods and locales.
take up the baton.
Overall since 1990 Mr Trevillian has spent over £700,000 on the project, but is being forced to sell it as he can no longer afford the mortgage payments or general upkeep which costs nearly £2,000 per month after being made redundant from his writing job at a magazine. The unique property is now being put up for sale with the scant asking price of £350,000.
Mr Trevillian spoke about the property saying: “Some people think it’s totally mad but others say it’s like being in one of those novel where a secret door opens up to a different world and fall in love with it. It’s every penny I’ve had for last 24 years - and every weekend too.
Mr Trevillian has also started a fund raising site in a bid to try and save his home, which according to the writer is just 18 months away from completion. Mr Trevillian’s plan for the property once completed was to gift it to the public to allow him to travel the world, however, with this latest development it seems another unique property enthusiast must
“As the house has gone on, I’ve loved it more and more. It’s been the longest relationship of my life. I’ve always been interested in English history but being from an ordinary East End of London family, I was never going to afford the sort of house I wanted. I picked the most normal house. I didn’t want character because I knew I was going to start from scratch. In fact, it was hideous - the bathroom leaked, it had everything wrong with it and
it wouldn’t sell. I thought, ‘perfect!’ When asked about his inspiration for some of the more unusual choices of styling for the rooms Mr Treviliian said: “I asked myself, where would you like to have breakfast? And I picked 1950s New Orleans for the kitchen. I imagined the morning sun shining into an Old Victorian house with Billie Holiday playing in the background. Three and a half years later, there it was. I’m looking
to sell it to someone who’s interested in the package - including the inventory of items.” An estate agent with Mullucks Wells said: “Out of the 9,000 homes I’ve inspected, and over 40 years in the business, this is the most extraordinary house I’ve ever brought to market.” By

Tesla in monumental patent U-Turn
CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, the head of the company leading the way in creating eco friendly electric cars, unveiled a significant change of heart for the motoring industry. Musk announced that Tesla plans to give away its entire patent portfolio to help push forward a future view of electric vehicles. Last week Google announced its ambitious plan to have self driving cars, this week Elon Musk of Tesla Motors announced that as long as companies would promise not to engage in courtroom battles they could use everything bit of patented
information Tesla owned.
Musk, a well known philanthropist, was Robert Downey Junior’s inspiration for the Tony Stark/Iron Man character said “If we clear a path to the creation of compelling electric vehicles, but then lay intellectual property landmines behind us to inhibit others, we are acting in a manner contrary to that goal.” Tesla’s are hoping that the decision to release all their coveted electric car patents will help stimulate the electric car industry which currently stands at less than 1% percent of the US car industry. Whitecraigs Rugby Club
Summer of Rugby Over the Last season Whitecraigs Rugby Club has continued to grow from strength to strength. It has been able to grow numbers through strong links with in the local primary and high schools, as well as many festivals, which we have participated involving teams from P1 through to U18’s. Our Under18’s had a very successful season and now with many of the players looking to break into the senior squad, it should stand the senior section in good stead for the re-formatted league structure. The club celebrated the end of season with the annual Fun Day in which all age groups, senior players and parents came along and competed in various activities for Andy’s Cup - in memory of Andrew Ferrier who played in our Micros. The club is looking to build on the last few seasons’ growth by kicking off the year with its third Annual Summer Rugby Camp, which will run, 5th of August to the 7th of August. Tigers tough weekend
Following last weekend’s Knock Out Cup success over London side Rye House Rockets to reach the quarter final stage, the Glasgow Tigers are back on the road again this weekend with three Premier League matches in successive days. Despite a heavy weekend schedule coming up the Tigers will travel South with renewed confidence having performed solidly in London, and again in Glasgow, in last weekend’s cup victory. Tigers Danish starlet Anders Thomsen was the stand out performer in London, contributing 13 points to the Tigers cup cause, however it was a solid team performance in Sunday’s concluding tie - with Glasgow riders winning twelve of the fifteen heats which saw the Tigers through to face Newcastle in the quarter finals.

AGAINST ALL ODDS So who’s called in sick already this World Cup? The late games may be taking their toll, but they’re worth it. We’ve seen the highest goal tally to the start of a World Cup in many a year. I think the open attacking play, the introduction of the “Brazuca” and the fact the World Cup is being played in Brazil has culminated in the goal fest we have seen thus far. Expect it to continue. At time of printing, some odds have not yet been published, but I expect those selections to be 3/1 or above, so very good value. 22nd June - U.S.A to beat Portugal and both teams to score 15/2 , is tremendous value, with a disheartened Portugal side taking on a side brimming with confidence 26th June - With the same team involved in my next selection, I fancy the powerful and clinical German side to beat U.S.A led by former German hero, Jurgen Klinsmann, and both teams to score again. The Diver has a point to prove, but I feel the Germans will be just too strong, there will be goals! (expected odds of 3/1) 23rd June Sees Spain take on the Socceroos. The Aussies always put up a good show, but the might of Spain (along with the pressure after their shock opening defeat to Holland) will be too strong, but like most games so far in this World Cup, there will be goals (expected odds of 3/1) 21st June sees the Final day at Ascot, the Two races that catch my attention are the Wokingham Stakes and the Coronation Stakes. First off the Wokingham Stakes, with the dry forecast predicted I think the fast finishing Ninjago (14/1) is great value, especially with Paul Hanagan in the saddle. Coronation Stakes – Lightning thunder is my pick here, this has been her aim for a while and with an interesting jockey change, the experienced and flamboyant Olivier Peslier taking over from up and coming Harry Bentley, this could prove to be a race winning decision by her owners. Singles – U.S.A to beat Portugal and btts 15/2, Germany to beat U.S.A btts (expected odds of) 3/1, Spain to beat Australia btts (expected odds of) 3/1 Ascot – Wokingham Stakes -Ninjago 14/1 (each way) Coronation Stakes - Lightning Thunder 9/2 (each way) By DD Odds correct at time of going to print Only gamble with money you can afford to lose

Denton ruled out of Scotland tour
World Cup Round-Up One week into the 2014 World Cup and its been quite an adventure so far, the majestic (Van Persie’s header against the Spanish) the unbelievable (Germany drubbing Portugal) The sleep inducing (Nigeria vs Iran) and the downright bizarre, England’s physio Gary Lewin breaking and dislocating his ankle(while celebrating England scoring against Italy.) So far Brazil, the early tournament favourites, have flattered to deceive, after a lacklustre win on the opening day, they struggled against a defiant Mexican side with the game finishing a stalemate. Belgium found themselves coming from behind, after Algeria, who hadn’t scored a goal in a World Cup for 28 years almost caused the upset of the tournament so far, but ultimately fell 2-1 to a relieved Belgian side. Costa Rica put highly rated Uruguay to the sword, however with Luis Suarez declaring himself fit to play the English and almost guaranteed
to be in the starting 11. England will face a far more formidable force than Costa Rica did. Both Uruguay and England needing a win to get their World Cup campaign back on track. France ran out comfortable winners against Honduras although not before taking several kicks along the way, Honduras finishing the game with ten men after Wilson Palacios was sent off for repeatedly fouling the French team. Argentina and Lionel Messi lived up to his top billing although he started the game with nerves(which he admitted to) got his name on the score sheet. The game finishing 2-1. Although a spirited Bosnia side will cause Nigeria problems in their next game. Nigeria arguably the most disappointing side of the World Cup so far. Switzerland scored in the final minute to claim a valuable three points after Ecuador had opened up the scoring, Switzerland scoring in the last ten seconds of the third minute of injury time. The USA had to battle for the
three points against Ghana. Ghana equalising in the 82nd minute and having the chance to pull ahead, were thwarted by an 86th minute goal to break Ghanaian hearts. Russia and South Korea finished a stalemate with the Russian keeper Igor Akinfeev palming the ball into his own net giving South Korea the lead. The South Korean jubilation was short lived however, as Russia staged a comeback and equalised 6 minutes later, both teams pushed for the winner but couldn’t find the winning goal. So far the World Cup has been everything a World Cup should be (even a little terror as fans tried to smash the windows of the ITV studio’s while live on air) The second round of games we will get a better understanding of who is expected to qualify and who is in danger of getting the first flight home. With everything to play for. Game onnnnnnnn By

Big race win for Demora at Musselburgh Demora supplied Ali Rawlinson with his biggest successwhen making all in the £100,000 William Hill Scottish Sprint Cup on Michael Appleby’s 10-1chance Demora.
The Newark raider, appearing for the first time since scoring at Haydock last September, held off Masamah by a length and a quarter with Dinkum Diamond a head back in third in front of a sell-out 9,000 plus Musselburgh crowd. Rawlinson, 22, who is based with the winning trainer, said: “That was an unbelievable performance after 259-days off. She can be a bit keen and so goes out on her own at home. “She’s as game as anything and it’s a great effort by everything at home to
get her spot on. It’s my biggest win by some way - I think my biggest before today was a class 4 at Nottingham and it’s an amazing feeling.” It was also announced on track that William Hill has renewed its sponsorship of the big race in a three year deal through until 2017.
Course general manger Bill Farnsworth said: “The Scottish Sprint Cup is Musselburgh’s flagship raceday and we are absolutely thrilled to have the long-term backing of the UK’s No 1 Bookmaker.” The £20,000 William Hill Scottish Sprint Cup Consolation Race went to David Barron’s progressive Robot Boy under a nice ride from Graham Gibbons.
Caledonia and rising star apprentice Jordan Nason teamed up to take the Stobo Castle Ladies Day Cup with Caledonia. Jim Goldie’s 12-1 chance stayed on well to beat Enchanted Garden by two and three quarter lengths. Tommy Boyle, representing winning owners Johnnie Delta Racing, said: “He has been something of an enigma since winning his bumper at Kelso two years ago. The penny hasslowly been dropping and this will have done his confidence the world of good.” Goldie had earlier struck with Mowhoob while Keith Dalgleish’s good run continued after he saddled a short-priced treble courtesy of Just The Tip, Lysino and Mazeppa.
David Denton, the 24-year-old Edinburgh Rugby back-row forward, will play no part in Scotland’s summer tour. Denton was due to challenge for a place in this Friday’s Test against Argentina in Cordoba and for the closing match against South Africa in Port Elizabeth a week on Saturday. Now however injury has ruled him out. Scotland team doctor James Robson explained: “David suffered a concussion in his last game of the
season for Edinburgh against Leinster in the PRO12 last month. “As we’ve always said we regard the welfare of our players as our principal priority and David has not recovered sufficiently to be considered for the intensity of Test match rugby against Argentina and South Africa.” The Scotland management will now consider additional options for the South African leg of the tour, while remaining mindful of the preparations that are already underway for the 2014 Commonwealth Games 7s in Glasgow next month.

Deloittes issue Rangers with ultimatum 20th June - 27th June 2014 | Issue 75 | Published by West of Scotland Media
Rangers Football Club have been hit with another bombshell following the announcement of their dismal season ticket sales and the prospect of another share issue.
is unsustainable for the company.”
Deloittes, the highly respected auditors, responsible for making sure that Rangers continue with their financial restructuring plan, have demanded that the club take drastic measures to ensure their financial stability.
Considering that Rangers previous share issue made in the region of £22 million pounds, fans have to ask, where has the money gone?
According to Phil Mac Giolla Bhain, and his well respected sources Rangers must “sell Murray Park immediately, because the cost of keeping it running
Deloittes have been dismayed at the recent financial results saying that the accounts for the half year leading to March 2013 showed Rangers made a £3.5million pound loss.
Previously an accountancy expert from Ernst and Young, Neil Patey said on Rangers finances. “Its slightly unusual that they are using money raised from the IPO (Initial Public Offering) for working capital. Usually, money raised
from the IPO is used to fund things like buying over new companies but not working capital.”
He went on to say. “If you don’t keep a prudent cost control, you could spend the £22 million pounds and run out of money before getting to the top division.” It seems like Neil Patey forebode future events that are now coming to fruition. Some of the other demands made by Deloittes are. “The ten highest earning staff (excluding Chief Executive Officer Graham Wallace and Chief Financial Officer Phillip Nash) will be relieved of their duties, due to financial constraints.”
Again, it seems like the high earners on the board, whom potential investor and lifelong Rangers fan Dave King, accused of allegedly bleeding the club dry, have been proven to be doing just that. It now seems like their alleged Rangers gravy train is running out of steam and track. Other financial worries facing the Ibrox boardroom are. In the next week approx £1.5 million in players wages are due to be paid, on top of that, CEO Graham Wallace is due to be paid more than £300,000 as a bonus, with Rangers previously agreeing to pay his tax on said bonus.
Highly ironic considering Rangers previous altercations with HMRC. George Letham the wealthy shareholder who loaned Rangers £1million pounds is also due to be repaid shortly. Phil Mac Giolla has said that Deloittes, speaking through their NOMAD Daniel Stewart & Company have contacted Rangers telling them that unless the club take immediate drastic financial action to curb their outgoing expenditure, they will be forced to quit as auditors of the troubled Ibrox giants.
