Teenager jailed for Mount Florida flat rape A teenager who raped and violently attacked a 51-year-old woman in her flat in Glasgow has been jailed for six years and nine months. By

Scott Johnston, 19, from East Kilbride, followed the woman as she walked home at around midnight after being out with friends and forced his way into her home in Mount Florida on December 8, last year. Johnston was at a Christmas party in Hampden Stadium. The court heard how Johnston saw the woman in the street as she walked home after she was out with a friend in a nearby bar in Kings Park. Johnston then followed her to her flat, forced his way in and raped her. The victim later recalled the attack, she remembered having her head held down and was struggling, but couldn’t move. She grabbed for a nearby iron and struck him. The assailant stumbled back and the victim saw a comb fall from his pocket. Enraged, he took the iron and hit the victim. Fearing for her life, with blood pouring from her head, the

A friend of the victim spotted the young man talking to her as she walked home and worried, he dialled 999, before phoning back after seeing she was in her house safe and saw Johnston walk in another direction. Minutes later the friend walked past her flat again and saw someone entering the close. It was only later he realised it was probably Johnston. On Wednesday, Judge Lady Rae told Johnston: “All rapes are horrid crimes but what aggravates this is that the complainer was unknown to you, a complete stranger. You entered her home uninvited and forced yourself on her. This was a degrading sexual assault and you violently assaulted her with a weapon causing her severe injury.”

WAS something completely different. What other programme offered funny walks in Ealing, a member of the Spanish Inquisition known as Cardinal Fang, a dead Norwegian parrot, nun boiling in Doncaster, Hell’s Grannies in Teddington and a provocative fish-slapping dance down the docks? However, Python nearly didn’t exist at all. Instead, it could have been called The Toad Elevating Moment or Owl Stretching Time, both of which were rejected by the BBC. But whatever the name, the brand of humour would have

remained – and no doubt have still gone on to influence thousands of comedians. Their bizarre form of humour, inspired in part by their mutual love of The Goons on radio and Spike Milligan’s TV series Q, was quickly branded ‘surreal’ by some, although that didn’t nearly describe it well enough. And so, a new word was needed – hence the creation of the term ‘Pythonesque’. In Imagine: Monty Python – And Now for Something Rather Similar (Sunday, BBC1, 10.35pm), Alan Yentob meets Cleese, Gilliam, Palin, Idle and Jones as they prepare to take to the stage together, 40 years after the Python TV show’s demise.

Police released a detailed description of the attacker after the incident and Johnston’s employer contacted the police, after recognising him.

It will include domestic abuse, rape, sexual harassment and stalking. The strategy has been developed by the Scottish Government and other groups including Scottish Women’s Aid, Rape Crisis Scotland and Police Scotland.

Help the Future City Explorers Map Your Community Glasgow residents are being urged to share their local knowledge with Future City Explorers.

Ten graduates have been recruited to visit local communities and encourage people to get involved with Future City Glasgow. The team will be out and about meeting people and inviting them to learn more about the technology developed as part of the £24million programme. Last year, Glasgow beat 29 other cities to win the funding from the UK Government’s Technology Strategy Board to demonstrate how technology could make life in the city smarter, safer and more sustainable. As well as learning about the projects which are under-way, people will also be able to share knowledge of

their local area in a bid to help others explore, appreciate and enjoy it.

Their information will help create a digital map of Glasgow which will highlight details such as the location of post boxes, schools, karate clubs, park entrances, sheltered housing, bus stops or local beauty spots. The interactive map will be made available for free on the Open Glasgow website. Councillor Alistair Watson, Glasgow City Council’s Executive Member for Transport and Sustainability, urged city residents to get involved with the project. He said: “No one knows Glasgow’s communities better than the people who live there. We’d like you to share the wealth of information you have to help visitors, new arrivals and even people from other areas of the city get

to know your district.

“This is a great opportunity to get involved with Future City Glasgow, to learn more about its benefits and to help other people to explore and appreciate your area. “People tend to know their own area of the city very well but may be surprised to find out about a hidden gem in another community.” The Future City Explorers will also staff engagement hubs which will pop up around the city in the autumn. The team will screen films explaining the Future City Glasgow projects and highlight new cycling and walking apps which are being created. Strathclyde University graduate, Cait Gillespie from Kelvinbridge, is one of the Future City Explorers.

The Explorers, including Cait Gillespie (front right kneeling) are pictured in George Square with Councillor Alistair Watson.

She said: “This is a really exciting project for me. I’m interested in storytelling and I’m looking forward to chatting to people in Glasgow and hearing what they have to say. “I love Glasgow and feel really lucky to have landed this as my first job.” The Explorers were recruited via Change Agents UK, a not-for-profit training and recruitment organisation. Nick Goodman, Change Agents CEO, said: “We are really excited to be involved with the Future City Glasgow programme which is offering

valuable training and experience for recent graduates. “Their four month placements are going to be exceptionally busy and we hope the new skills they acquire, coupled with the support and advice we provide, will increase their chances of securing full-time, permanent positions in the future.” The Explorers will be coming to a community near you soon. Strategy to Boost City’s Green Jobs Sector Glasgow is to stage its second Green Jobs Fair to inspire secondary school pupils to study subjects which could help them land future employment in the sector.

In 2013, more than 350 secondary school pupils attended the city’s first event tailored to this field in Glasgow Science Centre. Industry experts gave the young people advice and information on the type of opportunities available and the skills required if they decided to pursue a green career. Building on that success, Glasgow City Council pledged to hold an annual Green Jobs Fair for pupils in the early years of secondary school. This year’s event is being planned for November in a bid to encourage more young people, especially girls, to consider green careers and to increase their chances of landing a job by

Queen Street revamp may cause problems studying relevant subjects at school including science and technology. The exact date and location of the fair have yet to be finalised.

definition of what constitutes a green job and that makes it difficult to accurately evaluate the numbers in Glasgow.

The fair is one strand of Sustainable Glasgow’s work to boost green jobs in the city and ensure there is a skilled local workforce to benefit from that growth.

Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Sustainable Glasgow, said: “Glasgow is en route to becoming a low carbon hub and a key aim of Sustainable Glasgow is to drive growth in the green jobs sector.

Scottish Renewables recently estimated that Glasgow employs more people in the renewables sector than anywhere else in Scotland and it is home to more than 18% of the total Scottish workforce. Over half of the companies it surveyed also said they would be looking to employ more staff within the next year. However, renewables are only one area of the green economy. Numerous other roles could be classed as being in that field. But the Sustainable Glasgow Board heard that there is currently no agreed

“In order to do that, we must establish a clear definition of what constitutes a green job then use it as a baseline to evaluate the size of the sector and help us identify areas of potential growth. These are the first steps in producing a strategy to attract new jobs and nurture expansion. “It is also vital that our young people are equipped with relevant skills and qualifications which will enable them to benefit from the city’s green economy.”

Concerns have been raised over £100million refurbishment of Queen Street Station by transport bosses. The refurb will see extended platforms, the building of a new glass frontage and the demolition of the Consort House office block and part of the Millennium Hotel. Officials at Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) have raised a number of concerns they fear will cause problems for rail passengers. Points mentioned include the lack of taxi space and disabled parking at the station, as well as concerns over the route of the new Fastlink service. Jim Coleman, SPT chairman, said: “With Buchanan Galleries, the station works, the hotel demolition, all in the one area, being done by different organisations, there are still huge questions over these plans. “The travelling public is going to suffer when this kicks in. The main

problem is there is a lack of coordination between three or four developments.”The station will still be open and people using it, but the place will be a quagmire of demolition.” In a report to councillors, Eric Stewart, SPT’s assistance chief executive, said: “The redevelopment of Queen Street provides an opportunity to significantly improve integration between this major national, regional and city transport hub, its surrounding city centre land-uses and the wider transport network. “The plans produced to date only partially develop this opportunity and appear to have a potentially disproportionate focus on commercial/retail provision, with an estimated increase of more than 60% of commercial/retail floorspace. “This appears to be at the expense of station passenger facilities and optimum integration.” By

31kg heroin bust in Glasgow Govanhill Slimmer looks Sizzling for Summer Drug expert, Graeme Pearson has claimed that the recent 31kg recovery by police will have a monumental effect on city supplies.

It was reported in last week’s paper that police uncovered £2 million pounds worth of heroin after they caught a 42 year old man in Doncaster Street, Maryhill. In the past six months more than £3million worth of heroin has been seized in separate operations. Very recently thanks to Operation Futa, the police smashed a £250,000 drug ring in the heart of Glasgow city centre. During this particular operation 10 people were arrested, seven men and three women aged between 21 and 47. £1 million pounds of drugs were also seized in Drumchapel, In March £250,000 worth of heroin was also recovered in Maryhill. It makes for refreshing reading and means that addicts are less likely to be able to “score” a fix if there’s nothing to “score”. With less heroin on the streets there will be less drug deaths in the newspapers, as of 2012 there were 221 deaths related to heroin in Scotland. With methadone programmes more readily available and funded by the Scottish Government’s Free Prescription Act, and heroin becoming even more scarce on the ground. It will be harder for addicts to continuously pursue their heroin addiction. Its a far cry from Glasgow in the mid nineties, with heroin flooding the streets and the horrifying mass heroin overdoses that subsequently followed. Glasgow claimed the unwanted title of most drug deaths in a single city, 100 heroin overdoses in a year, which also earned the dear

green place the unfortunate moniker of having the biggest heroin problem in Europe. Drug expert Graeme Pearson former Director General of the Scottish Drug Enforcement Agency said of the availability of the drug in the coming weeks will have been affected. “It will have a significant impact, but it will be the next stage supply that will be affected. “Not this coming week, the £10 pound bags will be ready to go, but in the weeks and months ahead, we will really begin to see an impact.” Frighteningly, however, is although, there are repeated seizures of heroin in Scotland (and the rest of the world) the amount of drugs uncovered are but a blip on the radar screen, of the complete heroin, economic market. In Afghanistan for example it is estimated that the total money accrued by smuggling and cultivating the poppy plant is in the region of 50 billion dollars a year. With Afghanistan supplying 90% percent of the entire world’s heroin trade every year. Reassuringly Graeme Pearson has said of the effect on Glasgow’s drug trade. “A series of intelligence led operations has made it more difficult for addicts to buy and harder to find heroin of high purity, on sale from dealers.”

Royal Mint mints new pound coin Stars come together to raise funds for UNICEF The Royal Mint has today revealed a new limited edition Scottish £1 coin which bears two iconic emblems of the country.

Blue Bells of Scotland’.

The obverse of the flora series £1 coins features the current portrait of Her Majesty the Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS, and the reverse designs are by Timothy Noad, renowned numismatic and medallic artist and Fellow of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators.

Precious metal £1 coins bearing the flora of Scotland have been released by The Royal Mint in a continuation of its popular series celebrating the United Kingdom’s best-loved botanical icons. Since its introduction in 1983, the £1 coin has provided a platform on which to celebrate the four parts of the UK, with designs representing the Royal coats of arms, capital cities, bridges, and national emblems.

The Scotland £1 coin portrays Timothy Noad’s carefully-detailed Scottish thistle and bluebell emblems, and is available in fine gold Proof, silver Proof and silver Piedfort limited editions. The coin has been available in Brilliant Uncirculated standard since January, and a circulating version will start to appear in people’s change later in the year.

Continuing the themed series that started in 2013 with the England and Wales floral £1 coins, the flora of Scotland and Ireland are celebrated on the circulating and commemorative £1 coins of 2014. The release of the Ireland £1 in precious metal later this year will complete the series. The thistle became an emblem of Scotland during the reign of Alexander III in the thirteenth century and graced the Scottish silver coinage for the first time in the reign of James III, whilst the Scottish bluebell is the delicate, less familiar, floral symbol of Scotland. The flower features in the traditional Scottish folk song, ‘The

Commenting on his designs, Timothy Noad said, “In designing a series of coins representing each country of the UK, it is important that the motif on each coin is clearly recognisable and also keeps within the heraldic rules and conventions. I often find inspiration in medieval manuscripts, illumination and the work of William Morris, as well as the study of nature”. Each coin is accompanied by an informative booklet that explores the symbolism of the flora that decorate it, and is finished with extracts from poems that capture the national passion behind each of these symbols. Each comes with a certificate of authenticity, which marks it as an official coin of The Royal Mint. International singing superstar Nicole Scherzinger and cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy are two of the star-studded names who will appear in a global fundraising first at the Glasgow 2014 Opening Ceremony on 23 July to help UNICEF save and change the lives of millions of children across the Commonwealth. Glasgow 2014, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and UNICEF have forged a ground-breaking partnership, with the ambition of improving the lives of children in every country in the Commonwealth through raising money for the Children of the Commonwealth Fund, in the run-up to and during the Games. Spectators, athletes and an expected one billion viewers from across the Commonwealth will all have the chance to play their part in the ceremony and be invited to Put Children First by making a donation via text which will create a powerful Games legacy for children. Sir Chris unveiled the first glimpse of some of the legendary personalities involved in making the Opening Ceremony a unique and momentous opportunity for children in a short film. Speaking about her trip to Guyana in

Latin America, singer Nicole said: “It was wonderful to see how UNICEF is transforming children’s lives. I had the blessing of meeting children with disabilities who for most of their lives had been stuck at home or in schools without any accessible or welcoming outdoor space. But now, these children have somewhere safe to play and I could see they had hope and happiness in their lives. And that means everything. Speaking about his trip to Malawi, Sir Chris Hoy said: “Meeting children whose lives have been so hugely improved by UNICEF was an incredible experience that will stay with me forever. “In some parts of Malawi children are going hungry, but at school they are provided with a nutritious meal. Shockingly, for many of them it’s the only meal they will get all day... And things we take for granted in the UK, like basic medicine, are not always available in Malawi. He added: “The Opening Ceremony will be a spectacular moment for Glasgow, Scotland and the Commonwealth as we attempt something that has never been done before; I’m so proud to be a part of that, and I hope everyone will join us by watching on 23 July.” The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony will be on BBC 1 on July 23 at 9pm.

Eight Killed in Nigeria School Bombing A college campus in Nigeria was hit with an explosion killing at least eight people and resulted in 20 wounded on Monday, police said.

The blast at Kano’s State School of Hygiene in the heart of the northern Nigerian city of Kano took place during school hours, and tore through an area just inside the main gate, where students often gather at food kiosks between classes. It was not immediately clear who was behind the explosion. Bombings and attacks now happen almost every day in Nigeria’s north. Police said they don’t have a motive for the blast and are still investigating, but Boko Haram terrorists have targeted the northern Nigerian city in the past Police took one suspect in for questioning, the state police commissioner, Adenrele Shinaba, told reporters. The blast was so severe that several cars parked nearby were badly damaged, he said. Witnesses said the blast caused

workers to flee the city centre of Kano, the north’s largest city. Boko Haram gained global attention in April when it abducted more than 200 girls from a rural school in northeast Nigeria. Another 91 people were reportedly kidnapped by the group this week. Last month a suicide car bomb in the city killed five people on a street lined with popular bars and restaurants. It’s estimated that more than 1,500

people were killed in north-east Nigeria in the first three months of this year, according to Amnesty International. A shopping centre was also hit with a bomb explosion this week. The Kasuwan Kuturu market in Mubi area of Adamawa State was hit. The Adamawa Commissioner of Police, John Abakasanga reportedly said the explosion was targeting a police patrol team, and that there were no casualties. By

Cameron’s bid to oppose Junker set to fail

David Cameron’s attempt to stop Jean-Claude Juncker ascending to the EU presidency looks set to fail after key allies have switched positions in the debate. Cameron was optimistic for his chances to oppose Mr Junker’s presidency after Angela Merkel gave Cameron her assurance that a vote would be held if no consensus was met.

A ruling has been introduced by the US supreme court against searching the digital contents of mobile phones without a warrant. It comes as good news for privacy advocates who have argued that searching mobiles was an unreasonable intrusion. The high court had weighed appeals by two people convicted of crimes based on evidence that was found on their mobile phones. Under the fourth amendment to the US constitution, police and other government officials generally need to obtain a warrant from a judge before they can conduct a search. A warrant requires evidence that a crime has been committed by the suspect.

Justice Roberts wrote in his ruling: “Modern cell phones are not just another technological convenience. With all they contain and all they may reveal, they hold for many Americans the privacies of life.’’ “Our answer to the question of what police must do before searching a cell phone seized incident to an arrest is accordingly simple - get a warrant.” It has been reported that more than 90% of Americans own at least one mobile, according to the Pew Research Center, and more than 12 million people were arrested in the US in 2012, according to FBI statistics. Spanish Royal Family in dock

A member of the Spanish Royal Family is facing up to the realisation of tax and money laundering charges in a case that has rocked the Spanish Royal Family. Cristina de Borbon and her husband Inaki Urdangarin will have their business dealings scrutinised if the trial finally goes to court. At the moment a judge has formalised charges against the sister of the newly crowned king of Spain Felipe VI, who only ascended to the throne a week ago. Embarrassingly King Felipe had promised a monarchy that would be “honest and transparent”.

Noticeably Cristina was absent for the proclamation of Felipe as king. The trial will focus on the business dealings of her husband Inaki Urdangarin, who is accused of embezzling several millions of euros in public funds. The charges follow a two year investigation into Urdangarin in which they suspected him of siphoning off six million euros in public funds designated to charitable foundations. Princess Cristina’s appearance in Spanish court is unprecedented for the royal family and if she goes to trial, she could face up to 11 years in jail. By

New search for flight MH370

However after both the Netherlands and Sweden switched their stance on Junkers election yesterday, now it appears that the ex-Luxembourg president will achieve the presidency next Friday when EU leaders vote in Brussels. David Cameron spoke of Mr Junckers appointment which is at this point a formality saying that ‘Mr Junckers nomination ignores the pro-reform message sent by European voters last month’. going on to say that electing Mr Juncker will be an ‘irreversible step which would hand power from the European Council to the European Parliament.’ Mr Juncker responded to Mr Camerons comments saying that he will become the next European Commission ‘if common sense prevails.’ By

After new analysis of satellite data, the Australian government has announced that it will begin searching for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight in a new more southerly locale after fresh analysis of satellite data. The announcement comes after the release of a 64 page report by the Australian government which

suggested that the plane travelled further south than previously thought. This latest search is set to commence in August, with the bulk of the search to be conducted by submarines scouring the sea bed. The search is expected to take up to a year to complete and to date the search for MH370 is the most expensive in history. By

Phone Hacking trial nears completion

This week the jurors in the phone hacking trial announced their decisions as regards former News Of The World executives Andy Coulson and Rebekah Brooks in the phone hacking trials. Rebekah Brooks was found not guilty on all charges and exonerated of all blame by the jurors. Andy Coulson, former Downing Street spin doctor, was found guilty on Tuesday for his role in phone hacking at the now defunct News Of The World and now faces jail time. On Tuesday afternoon David Cameron apologised for hiring Coulson as his spin doctor saying: ‘I am extremely sorry I employed him. It was the wrong decision’ and that he took ‘full responsibility for employing him’ going on to say ‘I did so on the basis of undertakings I was given by him about phone hacking and those turn out not be the case. I always said if they turned out to be wrong, I would make a full and frank apology and I do that today. I am extremely sorry that I employed him. It was the wrong decision.’ However, Cameron’s prompt apology

has in fact caused serious problems for the case against Coulson, as he still faced two further charges that he conspired to commit misconduct in public office by paying public officials for the acquisition of royal phone books. The jury in the case was dismissed on Wednesday as they failed to return a unanimous verdict after their ninth day of deliberations, Judge Saunders who was deliberating over the case made it clear in a letter to Downing Street that he believed that Mr Cameron’s apology has damaged the jurors ability to come to a decision on the further charges. Judge Saunders spoke on Wednesday saying: “I don’t know whether it’s been done in ignorance or been done deliberately I consider that what has happened is unsatisfactory so far as justice and the rule of law are concerned’ and that the apology was ‘ill judged and premature’. A Downing Street spokesman has said the Mr Cameron made his apology after consulting with legal advice, but did not confirm if the advice came from the attorney general, Dominic Grieve. By

The appeal for the right to die has been lost this week at the UK Supreme Court. Nine justices had to make a decision whether a prohibition on assisted suicide was compatible with the right to respect for private and family life under the European Convention on Human Rights. Supreme Court judges ruled sevento-two against the appeal brought by campaigners Paul Lamb and Jane Nicklinson. Paul Lamb has only been able to move his right hand

since his accident in 1990, and Jane Nicklinson, whose husband Tony was paralysed after a stroke. Mr Lamb, 58, is in constant pain after a car accident more than 20 years ago left him almost completely paralysed from the neck down. He has called for the law to be changed so any doctor who helped him die would have a defence against the charge of murder. Tony Nicklinson was paralysed from the neck down after suffering a stroke in 2005 while on a business trip.

After losing his High Court battle last year, he refused food and died naturally, aged 58, a week later at his home in Wiltshire. His widow, Jane, is continuing his legal battle. Mrs Nicklinson, from Wiltshire, said: “I am disappointed that we lost. But it is a very positive step. Parliament will have to discuss this. I think Tony would be very pleased at how far we have come.” Mr Lamb added: “I am very proud of myself... I know it is going to change.” By

Wonga to pay £2.6m compensation Payday lender Wonga has been ordered to pay £2.6million in compensation after sending letters to their customers from law firms that don’t exist.

The loan company who have the slogan “straight talking money” on their adverts, arranged for customers to receive letters from companies named “Chainey, D’Amato & Shannon” and “Barker and Lowe Legal Recoveries”, though neither of the firms exist. The letters were threatening legal action against them for outstanding loans. Their intention was to make customers who had arrears believe that their debt had been passed to a law firm and threatened legal action against them. This was then putting pressure on customers to make payments that they couldn’t afford. The City watchdog, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), said compensation will be given to 45,000 customers. FCA director of supervision Clive Adamson says: “Wonga’s misconduct

was very serious because it had the effect of exacerbating an already difficult situation for customers in arrears. We are pleased that Wonga has been working with us to put matters right for its customers and to ensure that these historical practices are truly a thing of the past.” Wonga has apologised since and said the tactic ended nearly four years ago. Wonga interim chief executive Tim Weller says: “We would like to apologise unreservedly to anyone affected by the historical debt

collection activity and for any distress caused as a result. The practice was unacceptable and we voluntarily ceased it nearly four years ago. “We will learn from these mistakes and continue working with the FCA to build a better Wonga for the benefit of our customers. We’re strengthening our internal controls and systems and now have almost 1,000 people around the world, who are working hard to serve the demand for short-term credit in the most responsible way possible.” By

By contrast the other Sunday I had a walk round the new housing being built in the Broomhouse area (where the zoo used to be). They are lovely properties and will be fabulous homes for those living there… so welcome to folk moving into our area from elsewhere. However, bus services are minimal and there are no shops or other facilities nearby. On top of that the environment has suffered with Glasgow losing more of its traditional greenbelt. It seems there will be no gap at all in future between the City and neighbouring Bargeddie, Coatbridge and Uddingston.

It is on the site of the former Parkhead fire station in Canmore Street. Firstly it is good to see good quality flats like these which should give residents a better quality of life and lower their heating bills. One of the new tenants told us how she was in tears when she heard she was being allocated one these new homes! Secondly it is great to see new housing in that area behind the bus depot which has been lying vacant for years. This is exactly what we need and it can be a great area to live in. Good public transport is available nearby and there are also shops and sports facilities.

Also last week I met representatives of the Scottish Housing Regulator who oversee housing associations. I was keen to stress that I favour the size of associations like Parkhead, Shettleston, Tollcross, and Thenue which are professionally run and have capacity for new developments, while also having strong tenant involvement in running them. I am committed to progress on all parts of the housing front. The private rented sector has grown in recent years but sometimes this has led to increased anti-social behaviour. I have seen this in my own street in Barlanark. So new legislation including regulation of letting agents has to be a step in the right direction.

Oculus Review Oculus is a psychological horror film directed by Mark Flanagan, now showing in cinemas. It stars ex-Doctor Who companion Karen Gillan and Brenton Thwaites.

The film follows the story of Kaylie Russell (Gillan) as she tries to capture on camera, the malignant, supernatural force that resides inside the mirror and prove that those affected by it were not responsible for their actions. Using her position as an employee of an auction house, Kaylie steals the mirror and moves it back into her childhood home where, eleven years earlier, the mirror’s influence caused her father to murder her mother. During this time, her brother Tim (Thwaites) is released from protective custody. It is clear that he wants to put the past behind him and move on with his life, but his sister’s obsession with the mirror drags him into her plans. At first he insists that his sister is delusional, unable to come to terms

with the traumatic experiences of their childhood, but when he once again witnesses the mirror’s supernatural power he is forced to question what he remembers. The film itself is structured like a mirror, showing two timelines – the present and eleven years before which run parallel to each other. The earlier one starts off as flashbacks, but as the film’s climax comes closer and the power of the mirror increases, the boundaries between the two timelines become blurred. Another boundary that gets distorted is the one that separates reality with the horrific side of imagination. The two characters experience graphic hallucinations, leaving them, and us watching, unsure of what is real.

This film demonstrates the perfect amount of gore that a horror movie needs to install shock in its audience. I found myself cringing at parts that would have been ridiculous if the makers had fallen into the trap of using an excessive amount of blood

CULTURE AND EVENTS

and guts.

Nevertheless, I would still use the word “safe” to describe the techniques in this film. There are many unoriginal suspense-building ploys used in this film, such as the slow removal of blankets covering objects or the use of deadly silence just before something scary jumps out the shadows. In addition, Mr. Russell’s imprisonment of his wife following her mirrorinduced breakdown employs the outdated “mad woman in the attic” trope. We are given the mirror’s bloody history when Kaylie reads aloud her research to the cameras, but I would have liked to learn more regarding the origins of the mirror’s supernatural capabilities. Perhaps this is something we will learn if another film is made. The lack of resolution in the film’s ending has left it open for sequels. By

CULTURE AND EVENTS

A catch up with ‘One Last Secret’

What’s Happening in Glasgow... Street Parties This weekend is the weekend of Street Parties, from the South Side to the West End, everyone can join in the fun! Let’s just hope for some sunshine now...

Battlefield Street Party

So who are in the band and how long have the band been together, How did you guys meet?

Darran (drums) - We got together at the beginning of 2012. Wesley (lead voxals/bass) - Me and Fraser can’t actually remember how or where – or when we met. But we’ve known each other a long time. Fraser (guitar)- We all got together through other bands splitting up and us knowing of each other from ‘the scene’ so to speak. I know Darran and Darran knew Liam (guitar).

You’re performing live at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, how did that come about?

We’re really excited about this gig – especially Wesley and Liam who are both massive Beatles fans. Our manager and the guys at the Cavern had been in touch with each other and it just went from there, so yeah, we’ve been invited as special guests to perform on the actual, proper stage that the Beatles made infamous!

Where were the band when you heard you had reached no1 in the Scottish New Music chart?

We were all separate – it was late at night when it was announced so sadly there was no champagne popping or celebrating to mention, but it’s great to get some recognition – everybody likes a compliment after all. Some of the other chart entries are from acts that have achieved more than we have to date, so it’s great to be at the top – especially with a brand new entry.

Who were your musical inspirations growing up? Who would you compare yourself to currently in the music scene?

Our inspirations are pretty varied, The

Beatles, Foo Fighters, McFly, Biffy Clyro, Eminem, Stereophonics… There isn’t really anyone like us that we’re aware of. We’re probably more mainstream rock/pop than most unsigned artists. You’d probably think that with a mainstream vibe, it’d be easier to catch attention, but at times it seems the ‘scene’/’industry’ is more interested in everyone sounding different – and by different, not being mainstream – and by a lot of bands trying to sound different, it means a lot of bands actually end up sounding the same. We stay true to the music we enjoyed growing up and still enjoy today. People have suggested our sound is stadium/anthemic rock. We’re happy enough with that!

What has been the bands most rock and roll moment so far, any trashed hotel rooms to report on?

The before, during and after party at the MV Festival, Fraser got a bit worse for wear. Insanity ensued. Nothing was trashed, except Fraser. He doesn’t drink often, but that night, he certainly made up for it.

Having played in Scotland and Britain, what has been your favourite venue?

Darvel Town Hall was probably the best. The production was excellent, everything about those gigs have been completely professional and wellorchestrated. Though there is a high probability that after The Cavern gig this coming weekend, our answer to that may change.

What can you tell us about your upcoming debut album?

The album release in September will be our most important release to date. We went away for the weekend to a

cottage studio to write and record it, which we’ve never done before and really enjoyed the experience. We hadn’t written together, the four of us, before – normally Fraser and Wesley write together and Liam writes individually, then we bring new material to rehearsals and work them through. We took lots of beer with us and came back with all of it – we were just enjoying the writing experience so much that we were concentrated on that, literally every hour of the day. The album itself is our own, personal, work of art. We are producing a full length record for the first time rather than an EP or a single and we want that to come across in the album – every song on it as is good as the next and as important as the one before. It will be the first multi-track release that focusses on one sound – our previous EP’s contained material written by three of us individually, with three different lead vocals. We now have one consistent sound in Wesley’s lead vocals, pulling everything together.

Do you think it has become easier for bands to get noticed thanks to social media?

It’s a hard one to answer one way or another. There’s a number of folk who have been reportedly discovered via YouTube for example, but we’re yet to hear of anyone being discovered through Facebook or Twitter – though maybe it’s only a matter of time! Social media definitely provides a platform, everyone can get their music out there now, everyone can be heard somewhere. Though the flip side is – you want people to come to gigs and see you live and if social media is your only platform – and isn’t used wisely, you could end up with thousands of

fans on the other side of the world with no way of getting to them to gig. It certainly allows a more intimate connection with fans no matter how big or small you are as a band and provides a wider audience, they don’t call it the World Wide Web for nothing!

What lies ahead for the band following the release of your debut album?

Before the album release in September we have the music video and iTunes release for Light It Up on Fri 27th June. We’ve then got a number of gigs across Scotland and England as well as Loch Stock festival the first weekend in July which should be great fun!

Throughout the summer the focus is on getting the album recorded and produced with 12 inch media and then after the debut album release we’re going on tour across the UK. The dates are Sat 13th Sept – Sat 20th Sept and we’re really looking forward to spreading ourselves around the country and hopefully gaining some new fans along the way – and adding to our Shhh picture collection!

It’s due to be an exciting year for us, it really is all go.

Finally the floor is yours, what would you like to say to your fans?

Everyone who has supported us in any way to date – we are 100% thankful for. If you’ve come to a gig, bought some merch, downloaded our tunes, watched our videos on our YouTube channel, bought an EP, interacted with us in any way; thank you for the bottom of our hearts. It makes everything that we do all the more worthwhile.

This Saturday 28th June, the Battlefield Street Party will commence in the Community Garden (corner of Arundel Drive/Ledard Rd). There will be a Bake-Off, Dr. Bike will be on hand for on the spot bike repairs, a bouncy castle and a tombola. There will also be Local bands, djs, performances and open mic! Urban Roots will be playing garden games and activities and crafts for the wee ones to enjoy. There will also be stalls from local crafts people and businesses. You are also asked to join in on the Bring and Share lunch - whether it’s a salad, quiche or packet of biscuits, part of the fun is picnicking with your neighbours. This free event is on Saturday 28th June between 12pm – 5pm.

Queen Margaret Drive Street Festival

This weekend why not visit the street party on Queen Margaret Drive, part of the West End Festival. Just north of Byres Road, the street festival will have music, craft beer and authentic food. There will be art and craft workshops, street stalls and vintage clothing. If you’re taking the wee ones there will be face painting and other children’s activities. Families are welcome. The event is free and there will also be free parking. The event is on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th June and starts at 12pm.

Weird and

The blobfish (Psychrolutes marcidus) is a fish that inhabits the deep waters off the coasts of Australia and Tasmania. Because it lives to deep in the ocean, it is rarely seen by humans. Blobfish are found at depths where the pressure is much higher than at sea level, which would likely make gas bladders inefficient. To remain buoyant, the flesh of the blobfish is primarily a gelatinous mass with a density slightly less than water; this allows the fish to float above the sea floor without expending energy on swimming.

Star Signs

JUST DAE IT!

Joan Charles

completely honest it was one of the best experiences I’ve had as far as travel is concerned but then again I wasn’t doing the London eye carry on or the stereotypical shenanigans. I was on a quest for street food and street food I found! It was like a melting pot of multiculturalism and a plethora of various cooking styles. I swear tae god I was in tottal chef heaven, from the Afro Caribbean jerk chicken to Spanish paella to smoked right oot yet nut b.b.q madness. I was like a 3 year old on two bottles of Irn Bru, honestly but it was a proper eye opener of all degrees and when I left ma heid was burstin wae more ideas than Albert Einstein on acid!

I am delighted to be delivering your stars although; I won’t be doing them in the traditional way, as I am not an astrologer. For many years I have provided the stars using Tarot cards and that is what I will be doing here so, I guess in a sense they should be called, Taroscopes. Anyway, I do hope you enjoy what the cards have to say.

Aries If your looking for a romance to blossom this could be the time that’s right for you to make a move and get it going – if however you are searching for a true love then look out for a chance meeting.

Taurus Surprise news comes from someone quite unexpectedly and there is a connection to the past with this also. I feel you may be looking at things from a black and white; you might need to widen your horizons to see the bigger picture.

Gemini At this moment in time you could be feeling that not much is going your way however put a little faith into things changing and it could make all the difference. Burning the candle at both ends will drain your energy and stop you from seeing what is right in front of you.

Cancer It feels as if you are in the middle of the bridge half way to your new destination and leaving the past behind. Things that are worth waiting for take time and so, allow this to take shape in its own good time.

Leo Challenges and limitations are not helping you to make the moves you wanted and this could cause you some frustrations in the mean time. Try to divert your focus onto something that’s a bit more positive.

Virgo Time for reflection is not time lost; this gives you the thinking time you need to see what it is you really want and then to make a plan and go get it. Take yourself off to the movies or do something that will bring a little laughter into your life.

Libra Even though you are generous and are there when you need to be for others it may not always be reciprocated, not that you do it for that reason but when you need others I sense you feel they are other wise engaged.

Scorpio You will need to stand your ground on a matter, which concerns a male and someone who seems to think they can just step in, and dictate to you. I’m sensing the worm has turned and that you are now in the driving seat.

Alrighty madskulls it’s me again, I’ve survived another issue and manage to stay out of the Scottish judicial system, for those of you who don’t know me I’m the pessimistic culinary anarchist MAD CHEF!

Big shout out to mamas jerk kitchen Camden Market your food was outstanding!

DOES MA NUT IN.. SPACE INVADERS ...so I was making ma way tae London on the dreaded Mega Bus, the only form of transport where battery humans are as common as chickens. I had an 8 hour journey from Glasgow to London with the same amount of leg room as Michael Jordan on a two seater couch, topped with the ventilation system of a Turkish airport needless to say I was not a happy chappie, as soon as we got into light speed and thrusters hit full capacity I reached for the Nytol but even the government

EVERY DAYS AN ADVENTURE So finally I decided it was time tae take a break from the dungeon of insanity and where better tae go than the epicentre of the UK’s food scene The one and only London city, I was quite pessimistic to be honest and had a pre built defence mechanism about going down south being Scottish an aw that, but to be

Aquarius Better have a nice bottle of something on chill as I’m feeling you are about to enter a new phase in life and one that will challenge you in a whole different way. This is a positive time but one that requires focus.

Pisces As they say, the truth will out and what this means is you are about to uncover something that will provide you with the answers to certain things you have been uncertain about. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

I was now a bus pirate sailing the seven motorways on the hunt for culinary treasure, and before I I knew it I woke up, with legs like a baby giraffe and a face with the imprint of the bus logo clearly set into ma fore head, but never the less I survived and I was clearly at my destination all I needed now was a wheelchair and make over from Lorraine Kelly! Moral of the story if yer travelling by bus for eight hours dae yerself a favour and leave yer legs in the hoose as you clearly won’t be needing them!

Sagittarius

On one hand I sense that you are not in high spirits and then on the other I see good news coming your way. I am seeing a key and for me this is about discovering something that helps you and also a possible house move too.

approved sleeping pills couldn’t make this bus journey one bit better, five hours in and my face felt like someone had washed it with sand paper and the guy next to me was getting fresh in his sleep honestly, I just wanted to stick a bag over my bus buddy’s heid and hope he’s slowly passes a way with minimal noise the snoring was unbelievable it even put me aff eatin ma wee play piece I’d made for the journey. I was about to implode, then like a sign from god I remember I had a half bottle of sailor jerry in ma bag. (Thank the lord of the rum you shall provide and I shall receive.) So pop goes the old skool cork lid of the rum bottle and down the hatch it goes, now not even a gang of pre pubescent kids with their mobile phone music could ruin my journey now.

Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie (15)

FRIDAY 27 JUNE - THURSDAY 3 JULY

Brendan O’Carroll’s brilliant comic creation defends her market stall from a nasty developer in her hilarious bigscreen debut. Feisty matriarch Agnes Brown (Brendan O’Carroll) runs a fruit and vegetable stall in Dublin’s historic Moore Street Market. It’s been in her family for generations and she hopes eventually to pass it to daughter Cathy (Jennifer Gibney). Then she receives a vast tax bill. Maria (Fiona O’Carroll) and Rory (Rory Cowan) embark on a foolhardy plan to raise the cash by swimming the channel. Meanwhile, our potty-mouthed heroine learns that she’s not the only one to have her livelihood and heritage threatened. A dastardly developer wants to bulldoze the entire market. Now Agnes must take on the Irish establishment - with a little help from Buster Brady’s troop of blind trainee Ninjas, an alcoholic solicitor, and a barrister with Tourette’s Syndrome!

Walking On Sunshine (12A) Opens 27/6/14:

X Factor winner Leona Lewis makes her acting debut in this sunny romantic musical packed with singalong 80s hits! Maddie (Annabel Scholey) has recently come out of a long-term relationship and fallen passionately in love with hunky Raf (Giulio Berruti). After a whirlwind romance, the couple are preparing to get married. But there’s a surprise in store when Maddie invites her sister Taylor (Hannah Arterton) to Italy for the wedding. What she doesn’t suspect is that Taylor had a holiday fling with Raf and thinks of him as the love of her life! This joyful British musical from Max Giwa and Dania Pasquini, directors of the hit ‘StreetDance’ films, co-stars Gemma Arterton’s younger sister Hannah and casts Leona Lewis in her first film role. It bounces along on the most glorious hits of the 1980s, including ‘Holiday’, ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’, ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go Go’ and ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 (PG) Opens 27/6/14:

Hiccup the Viking and Toothless the dragon take on a sinister new foe in this fun-packed sequel! A lot has happened since we last saw Viking teenager Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and his lovable companion Toothless the dragon. Today, dragons and Vikings happily coexist on the island of Berk. Astrid (America Ferrera), Snotlout (Jonah Hill) and friends spend their days challenging one another to dragon races. That’s great fun for everybody - unless you happen to be a sheep! Meanwhile, Hiccup and Toothless soar through the skies exploring uncharted worlds. Their adventures take them to an ice cave filled with hundreds of wild dragons. But they also encounter mysterious, evil Drago Bludvist (Djimon Hounsou)! Now our unlikely heroes must fight to keep the peace. All our favourite characters are back for this amazing sequel to the Oscar-nominated animation. They’re joined by fabulous new ones voiced by Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett, Djimon Hounsou and Game of Thrones star Kit Harington.

From Here to Eternity: The Musical (15) Opens 3/7/14:

Sir Tim Rice’s gritty, sexy, toe-tapping WWII musical captured in glorious HD at London’s Shaftesbury Theatre. Pearl Harbour, just before the devastating Japanese attack of 1941. For the soldiers of G Company, it’s a time of complex romantic entanglements. Platoon sergeant Milt Warden (Darius Campbell) is having a passionate affair with his commanding officer’s beautiful wife, Karen (Rebecca Thornhill). Meanwhile, troubled Private Prewitt (Robert Lonsdale) has fallen for dancer Lorene (Siubhan Harrison). The 1953 film based on James Jones’s bestseller of illicit love and army life swept the board at the Oscars. Sir Tim Rice’s powerful and exciting epic new musical is based on the recently uncensored version of the novel. It’s a grand and much-acclaimed production with a cast of 33, accompanied by a 15 piece orchestra. Brilliantly recorded in HD, this special screening includes an exclusive behind the scenes tour of the Shaftesbury Theatre and an interview with Sir Tim Rice. If you are unable to make the live screening make sure to catch the Encore re-broadcast on Monday 07 July.

Transformers: Age of Extinction (tbc) Opens 5/7/14:

The Dinobots make their spectacular entrance as mankind faces total annihilation in the fourth explosive ‘Transformers’ movie. Years have passed since the devastating battle of Chicago and humans have turned against the Transformers. Then widowed inventor Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg) uncovers a beat-up old truck that turns out to be none other than Optimus Prime. Arrogant government agent Harold Attinger (Kelsey Grammer) promptly arrives with a large military force demanding to know the whereabouts of the reactivated Autobot. Meanwhile, scientist Joshua (Stanley Tucci) isolates the unstable metal from which the Transformers are made. Little does humanity anticipate that this will attract a terrifying new menace! Michael Bay’s fourth jaw-dropping Transformers movie not only amps up the explosive action but also gives Optimus Prime a stunning, sword-wielding makeover. The big news for Transformers fans, however, is the introduction of the astonishing Dinobots. They’re led by Grimlock, who transforms into an extraordinary mechanical Tyrannosaurus rex!

But five of the six men who made perhaps the most surreal series in the history of British TV – John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin, Eric Idle and Terry Jones – are still alive and kicking, and on Tuesday begin a 20-day residency at the O2 in London. Tickets were like gold dust, with extra dates added to keep the hoards of fans happy who desperately wanted to see their ageing heroes in action one last time. We’re promised that even Graham Chapman, who died in 1989, will appear via archive footage on a huge video screen.

It should almost feel as if they’ve never been away, despite the fact they’ve all carved out very different careers since the Meaning of Life in 1983. But why get back together again at all? “Purely financial,” admits Palin. “We’ve had this court case hanging around when one of the producers of The Holy Grail decided he needed a bit more of the cut from Spamalot – and court cases don’t come cheap. Something had to push us into it! “But the speed at which the tickets sold was astounding to us all. So, there are a lot of friends of Python out there.” As anybody who tuned in to the original show will tell you, it really

John Cleese (right) Imagine: Monty Python – And Now for Something Rather Similar BBC1, 10.35pm Eric Idle once joked that the Monty Python team would only get back together if Graham Chapman came back from the dead. There’s been no sign of a Lazarus-like resurrection from the pipe-smoking sixth member of the team, and yet back in November the comedy group announced a one-off show at London’s O2. Demand was so high that more dates were quickly added yet Cleese and co have been at pains to point out that this is not only a reunion – it’s also a farewell. The Pythons have decided this will be the last time they’ll work together as a group.

James Corden James Corden Does Deal or No Deal Channel 4, 8pm For those of us on the outside, this show can look like the nuttiest thing since the invention of peanut butter. However, for those playing the game in the studio, it’s like life or death. Noel Edmonds is committed as ever, carrying on the Banker façade like a man yearning to win a Bafta for best dramatic performance. It’s hard for anyone weaned on Swap Shop and Noel’s House Party, not to love Edmonds. He has turned a hit US game show into something very British: cheaper, less glitzy than its US counterpart.

The Big £45 Review By

When I first heard about breathable foundation that you could sleep in I was intrigued, because we are always told the cardinal sin of beauty was not taking all your make-up off before going to bed. I couldn’t wait to try it.

it would be great to take on holiday. It claims to be water-resistant, stay on all day without needing to be reapplied and not rub off on clothing. So with last week’s mini-heatwave, I thought it would be great time to test it out before Summer!

The foundation was originally designed to heal and conceal skin after cosmetic surgery and procedures such as skin lasers and peels due to its healing ingredients. The Oxygenetix foundation is a favourite of the stars as it can be worn all day without clogging up the skin. The foundation is highly recommended by the UK medical industry. This is due to it’s healing abilities and suitability for all skin types.

I am naturally pale-skinned, so I tried shade Ivory. After hearing all these great things it sounded all too good to be true. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Even after 8 hours in the office and on the melting hot bus journey home I checked when I got home and it had stayed put the whole day. It covers skin imperfections and red patches. This meant I found myself using less concealer than I usually do. I am looking forward to trying it out abroad, with higher temperatures, swimming and clubbing to see how it holds up. It would also be perfect for festivals.

The foundation was a secret for a while, with it only being sold to dermatologists and plastic surgeons. However, due to public demand and it’s celebrity fan base, it’s no longer under wraps. It was used backstage at the 2014 Oscars awards and is used by many leading make-up artists. Even the Kardashian’s are fans of it, after they were introduced to it by their cosmetic doctor. With the foundation containing SPF25

The Smart Girl’s Guide... to beating insomnia Can’t get no sleep? There is nothing worse than laying awake at night and not being able to get to sleep. If counting sheep isn’t helping you get your beauty sleep, here are some tips on how a few simple changes can help you to get 40 winks...

Kick the caffeine

Log out and switch off

Caffeinated beverages such as coffee or energy drinks can play a big role in stopping you from nodding off. Try to cut down and if you can’t bear to give up the lattes, have coffee no later than 6pm. An alternative is a cup of camomile tea with honey.

Watching television or going through your newsfeed on Facebook on your phone or laptop right before bed will keep you alert, which is not what you want when you are trying to sleep. Switch off the television and keep your ‘tweeting’ and ‘liking’ to a minimum for the hour before you go to bed.

And... relax! Start to unwind an hour before you go to bed. Have a warm soak in the tub, play some relaxing music and chill out. Reading often helps people nod off. Getting into a routine will help you get to sleep sooner. Get into the habit of going to bed at the same time every night, put your pajamas on, wash your face etc. It will trigger your mind into preparing it for bedtime.

Don’t worry, be happy! Keep a notepad beside your bed and note down any ‘To Do’ lists or things to remember for the next day. That way you can note things down before you go to sleep so you’re not lying worrying about them. If you find yourself not being able to sleep, don’t lie there worrying about it. Get up and make a hot drink or read until you feel sleepy, then go back to bed.

Tel: 0141 778 8335 Protect your pet from pesky parasites!

It wasn’t the hare that caught up with Janice Rennie after smuggling two tortoises back from a family holiday in Tunisia. It was the S.S.P.C.A Mrs Rennie had travelled to Tunisia on holiday and according to Janice she had been gifted the tortoises on the beach because her 13 year old grandson had asked her for one as a pet. After bringing the spur thighed tortoises (which are on the WWF endangered list) back to Scotland she noticed that the larger tortoise began attacking the smaller tortoise, which forced Mrs Rennie to sell the tortoise. Advertising the availability of one of the tortoises in her local newsagent, alerted the SSPCA to the spur thighed tortoise, what followed was the animal protection group establishing a sting operation, using two undercover officers

to approach Mrs Rennie’s home upon doing so they were offered the animal for £100 pounds. Officers upon searching the home found that the smaller of the tortoises had died and the larger one was hidden in a plastic container in the oven. Prosecutor Shona McJannett said: “The SSPCA secured a search warrant and when they returned, they found the smaller of the tortoises had died and the larger one was hidden in a plastic box in the oven. Officers were concerned for the welfare of the live animal and it was signed into their care.” Sheriff Wyllie Robertson fined first offender Rennie £300 pounds, whilst the accused pleaded guilty to advertising, offering and keeping for sale the two tortoises contrary to Control of Trade in Endangered Species regulations.

The warmer months are peak season for pesky parasites like fleas and ticks. Fleas are a major source of irritation to pets and owners alike. They feed on the animal’s blood and multiply rapidly to cause an infestation. As well as being found on your pet they will live in the carpets and bedding at home. Fleas are responsible for transmitting tapeworms in pets so worming your pet if you find fleas is also advisable. Ticks are found mainly in woodland areas or on the hills and moor land but can be found in areas of long grass, especially if deer or hedgehogs are in the area. Ticks also feed on your pets’ blood and can cause serious diseases such as Lyme’s disease as well as a reaction to the bite itself. It is important never to pull a tick from your pet’s body. This can result in the tick’s head being left in the skin, causing infection, pain and irritation. Tick removers are available to ensure safe and complete removal.

Angiostrongylus vasorum (also known as French Heartworm) is a parasite that infects dogs. The adult worms live in the heart and large blood vessels supplying the lungs and can cause a whole host of problems in affected animals and if left untreated it can be fatal. The lungworm parasite is carried by slugs and snails, which are often eaten by dogs on purpose or accidentally when attached to toys or grass or in outdoor water bowls. Symptoms range from breathing problems, blood clotting problems, general weakness and depression and even sudden collapse and death. Infection can be prevented by using a specific spot on preparation, available from your vet.

Home buyers shelling out thousands in hidden damage By

According to the results of a study carried out by LV= insurance, almost half of those who have bought a property this year have been forced to pay for repairs which were previously undeclared or hidden before purchasing the property. Of those surveyed, a third believed that the seller deliberately concealed problems with the property prior to the sale. The study revealed that the average cost to the buyer putting previously hidden problems right is £4,250, the majority of these costs are incurred due to faulty plumbing, hidden mold, dampness, electrical problems

and roof leaks.

Many of those surveyed said that they did not have an opportunity to check the property for damage prior to buying as they felt rushed and many believed that if they didn’t make an offer quickly before carrying out checks they would miss their opportunity to purchase the property. This problem is made worse by the misconception that sellers are obligated to reveal any problems with a property upfront, but much like any other transaction of this type it’s the buyers responsibility to thoroughly inspect the property prior to purchase. Selwyn Fernandes, Managing Director of LV= home insurance

FOR SALE

Brendan Doherty

responded to the findings saying: “ Buying a home is a huge investment and yet many buyers now feel pressured to rush into a sale without checking a property thoroughly. Serious faults are difficult to identify and can be very costly to put right. It is worth getting the professionals in to survey the condition of a property before exchanging contracts to make sure you are fully aware of any issues with the property. Home insurance will not cover you for damage that occurred before the sale but it may cover you for problems that happen afterwards, such as water damage resulting from faulty pipework.”

Gilbertfield Street, Garthamlock Offers Over £105,000

PROPERTY Flying the nest not an option for many young people According to a new study by First Direct, 47 percent of parents in Scotland do not envisage their children becoming independent and leaving the family home until much later than they did when they were young. The squeeze on living standards after the financial crash and the unstable job market for young people are two of the most important factors forcing young people to remain in the family home well into their 20’s and in some cases their 30’s. Tracy Garrad, head of First Direct spoke regarding the findings saying: “What’s surprising to see from our study is that across the generations, from baby boomers to people in their 20s, flying the nest still remains the definition of independence, but leaving the family home is not as straightforward as it used to be, with a squeeze on finances playing a big part in that.”

Battles Burn Drive, Tollcross Offers over £99,000

This is a modern two bedroom semi-detached property offering spacious modern living over two levels and comes to the market in walk-in condition.

According to Churchill home insurance, who’s study also included a survey of estate agents from across the UK, there has been in recent years a massive increase in the number of downstairs bedrooms being registered. According to Churchill’s study, a quarter of those who have carried out conversions claim that they believe the new bedrooms will increase the value of their properties, where as another quarter want a new bedroom to accommodate an adult son or daughter moving back in. It seems for an entire generation of young Scots, independent living is something that will have to remain a dream for a long time to come, particularly as the average age of first time home buyers steadily climbs higher and higher year on year.

Proposed rent controls not in tenants best interests says industry According to Letscotland, the largest letting agent representative body in Scotland, amendments being tabled by Labour at Holyrood will end up costing tenants more in the long run.

Letscotland has urged MSP’s to reject the proposed amendments to the Housing Bill in parliament, the changes proposed by Labour would introduce rent controls and change the conditions of lease tenure.

Warrack said in a statement: I have met Labour’s representatives on a number of occasions and I have absolutely no doubt that they mean well. They clearly have tenants in their thoughts when constructing their policy. However, sometimes policies which look appealing to a particular group turn out to have the opposite effect. Such an unintended consequence would undoubtedly unfold here.

Letscotland believe that the changes while well meaning would have unforeseen consequences for the letting market in Scotland, increasing the price of letting overall in Scotland instead of reducing costs for tenants as the amendments are intended to do.

Rent rises in the private sector have, in most local authority areas, been below the rate of inflation over the last five years-or-so, when the sector has been expanding. Moreover, the short assured tenancy is popular with tenants, and indeed over 90% of lease-breaks are tenant-initiated.

Chairman of Letscotland, Malcolm

The market is working well, and

an attempt to interfere through rent controls and tenure reform will create significant uncertainty and discourage investment. This will inevitably lead to a reduction in the supply of rental homes, which will push up the price of renting. Labour’s amendments, in other words, could cause precisely the problem they are trying to solve.” To many tenants however, Letscotland’s stance on the amendments to the housing bill may be seen as industrial protectionism, particularly as more people between the ages of 21 and 35 are renting than ever before due to the after effects of the economic turn down and the increased difficulty younger people are facing while attempting to secure a mortgage. Moving house is one of the most stressful things in life. This means it is easy to overlook small things we would notice otherwise. When you are viewing a property to buy (or even long-term rent) it is so important to make sure you have everything covered. Why risk finding something serious when you move in because you only viewed the house in 20 minutes? Be smart, look around! Here are a few tips for what to look out for...

What is the area like?

Is there damp?

Check your bearings

The main giveaway signs are a mouldy smell, flaky plaster, and watermarked walls or ceilings. Make sure you look closely near the ceiling and around the skirting boards. Another clue might be if the room has just been repainted – possibly covering any damp. Look behind frames and mirrors, anywhere thats hidden, it could be hiding damp.

Are you situated above a kebab shop or opposite a pub? If the property is located above a fast-food joint the smell of the food could waft through. If you are near a pub, be prepared for rowdy drunks leaving at closing time, fighting in the street or smokers talking loudly. If you are on a main road, the traffic will be noisy and the pollution from cars will mean dirty windows. Do you have noisy neighbours? If the agent or seller has the TV or radio on, ask them to turn it down to see if it is masking noise from next door. The way your house faces won’t make much a difference in winter, but in the summer the difference between facing north and south is huge. It will mean your house will either be full of light and warmth, and one that is dark and dingy. Take a compass with you to the viewing or use the one on your phone By

Roadworks nightmare for motorists By

According to a new study, there are almost 25,000 incomplete roadworks on Britain’s roads, covering an estimated 2,387 miles of road nationally. These roadworks inconvenience almost a third of all journeys nationally and add around 12 minutes to the journey time.

This latest study shows that we’re not all moaning without reason about the roadworks and diversions, with such a staggering number of unfinished roadworks it’s no wonder that many of us have to leave earlier and earlier to get to work or other engagements. In this writers opinion despite the sheer amount of work being done on British roads there doesn’t seem to be much improvement to the surfaces, particularly in Glasgow, where it seems like the only smooth roads in the city surround the Commonwealth venues, with huge potentially damaging potholes and sunken ironworks covering the rest of the city’s road network. Potholes are the leading cause for damage to suspension parts, wheels

Schumachers medical data on black market Closing date: 3rd July 2014

According to Michael Schumachers managements team, the F1 legends medical records are being offered for sale after their theft.

Voucher must be presented at the time of purchase. Not valid in conjunction with any other discount or against tickets already purchased.

Head of the managerial team Sabine Kehm said in a statement this week that it was unclear if the records being sold were genuine saying: “We cannot judge if these documents are authentic. However, the documents are clearly stolen. The theft has been reported.”. Ms Kehm also went on to assure the press that anyone or any organization found to release the confidential data or purchasing it would face criminal charges. Currently it is unclear as to where the stolen records originate from, with two the most likely possibilities being from the hospital in Grenoble or the Swiss Lausanne University hospital. By

and tyres and for those of us driving lower, sportier cars, potholes are potentially catastrophic as they can destroy sumps and cause a lot of other very expensive damage. If you’ve suffered the bite of a pothole and ended up with a buckled wheel, smashed wishbone or just had to get another costly alignment done, you can claim the money back from the council providing you report the offending pothole and photograph it and the damage at the time of the incident. So even with 25,000 incomplete road works out there, stay vigilant and if you do happen to fall victim to a pothole or other road problem don’t pay out of pocket, spur the council into action by making them spend some of their cash to put things right.

Around 54,000 learners with penalty points

Almost 54,000 learner drivers have attained penalty points on their licences before passing their test according to findings obtained from the DVLA. This accounts for nearly a fifth of all learner drivers on the road. The vast majority of the points have been handed down for speeding offences followed by jumping red lights and driving without insurance. According to this latest study, a third of learner drivers were in fact unaware that they were subject to being punished by penalty points on their provisional licence with a further 40% of new drivers being unaware that they would have their licences suspended if they reached six penalty points. Consistently Inconsistent The intermittent, and frustrating fluctuations in form continue for Glasgow Tigers as they seek to get fully into their stride in time to compete strongly in this season’s Premier League campaign. Whilst the Scottish weather has now settled to allow the team to keep busy following several rain postponements in recent months, it is the scoring performance of the top end of the Tigers team which continues to baffle management and fans. Following last week’s cup win and much improved performances from heat leader trio of Kevin Wolbert, Theo Pijper and Rusty Harrison, the team were well beaten at league champs Somerset last Friday night, before running Rye House close on Saturday night where the Tigers fell just a single point short of grabbing a valuable away league point for their efforts. Whilst the team lesser lights scorched to a 33 point contribution at Rye House, the top three Tigers could only manage paltry 8 between them which, in the end, cost the club a chance of a

likely away win. The long overnight drive to Glasgow to face a tough Ipswich side at Ashfield on Sunday appeared to have had beneficial effect though as the same heat leader trio racked up 36 points as the Tigers, despite going down to 5 riders for the majority of the meeting, dominated proceedings to claim a comfortable home win with a 53-40 score. Tigers await news this week on Anders Thomsen (ankle injury) and Christian

Henry (arm injury) ahead of this Sunday’s Premier League clash with far travelled Plymouth Devils led by Great Britain international Ben Barker. Having taken care of Ipswich so comfortably, Tigers bosses will expect their side to be able to repeat that level of performance against the Devils, however only if they can instil some semblance of consistency at last. For all the latest news on the Tigers, see club website www.glasgowtigers.co

60 year old Taylor who had risen to the title of chief executive of UEFA Events within the football organisation had to have immediate treatment after falling ill in Istanbul earlier this month. Father of two Taylor suffered a near fatal heart attack in 2011 whilst leaving his office at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon. Taylor had actually stopped breathing before medics managed to revive him with a defibrillator machine. SFA President Campbell Ogilvie paid tribute to the childhood Scotland supporter and first Chief Executive

of the Scottish FA he said “On behalf of his friends and former colleagues at the Scottish FA, and throughout Scottish football in general, I would like to express our profound sadness at the tragic new of David’s death. “I would also wish to send our deepest condolences to his wife Cathy and their children James and Alan, at this dreadful time.” David Taylor was also one of the main proprietors behind the expansion of the European Championships Finals, which will help smaller countries such as our own have a better chance of qualification for the tournament UEFA considered him one of the most respected administrators in the game due to his honesty and contuing integrity across Europe and throughout the worldwide game.

FIFA hit back of the net by doubling wages Apparently its party time in the Fifa headquarters as leaked documents have shown an increase in the top employees wages of 100% percent in the past year.

AGAINST ALL ODDS No England, no Croatia, no Spain, No Italy, No Portugal! It would have been a brave man to have bet on that outcome in the Qualifiers. However, we now move on to the nitty gritty. Outright odds have changed, not much on the favourites, but dramatically on the likes of Costa Rica and the United States. Last week we tipped U.S.A to do well, and they didn’t let us down. At time of going to print, the next round of fixtures haven’t been confirmed, so we will concentrate on the Outrights – Brazil, my initial pick are still favourites and I don’t see that changing, 3/1 is still attractive, as is the 15/2 on Holland, LVG has the Dutch looking great, and at nearly 8/1 that is too good not to have a small wager. Brazil and Neymar to win and be top goalscorer is an attractive 5/1. There is also even (1/1) money around Germany reaching the semi-finals, and as experts at knowing just what to do to qualify, doubling your money with them should be first line on your slip. The 12th of July sees The Darley Cup take place, and the Slade Power, a present to his dear mum by Paddy Power is currently trading at 5/2. Fresh from winning the Diamond Jubilee stakes, I see a double on the card. Pimms anyone? It’s that time when all the supermarkets sell out of the aforementioned beverage, and strawberries. Everyone who wouldn’t know the difference between Juice and Deuce is suddenly an expert of ‘approaching the net’ and ‘return of serve’, but hey, who doesn’t get caught up on Wimbeldon. Sorry Murray lovers, but I think it will be another couple of years before the Dunblane star is crying in front of Sue Barker on Centre court, the wise money is on the machine that is Novak Djokovic, at time of print he is 7/4, and think that is money well spent. Singles – Brazil to win World Cup – 3/1, Neymar top goalscorer/Brazil to Win world cup -5/1, Germany to qualify for semi-finals 1/1, Novak Djokovic to win Wimbeldon – 7/4, 12th July Slade Power to win The Darley Cup 5/2. Outsider (small stakes) – Holland to win World Cup 15/2 By Odds correct at time of going to print Only gamble with money you can afford to lose

Documents have shown that salaries at the controversy stricken organisation doubled from £59,000 pounds to £118,000 pounds.

Under fire Fifa President Sepp Blatter also awarded members a £2.59 million pounds secret bonus from money that was collected during the South African World Cup of 2010. With Blatter announcing he wishes to run for President again and the executive committee (Exco) controlling the decision of who becomes President through a “democratic” voting system, it

could be seen that Blatter is allegedly trying to curry favour with the members of the committee.

In recent weeks Blatter and Fifa have come under fire for the controversial decision to award Quatar the rights to host the 2022 World Cup. A country not particularly known for its footballing exploits. There are rumours surrounding the provocative decision, such as alleged bribery to secure the decision and also definitive evidence to support the case that the Quatari Government have been using Nepalese workers for slave labour resulting in many of them dropping dead from heart attacks, heart failure or workplace accidents. Apparently, according to a serving Exco member the pay rise was to compensate for the bonus schemes which have now been axed, culminating in a substantial wage rise. Sepp Blatter has faced strong criticism in the past for his outdated

World Cup Round-Up

Week two in the 2014 World Cup, and there’ve been a few unforeseen casualties already, Reigning world champions Spain, sent packing, England finished bottom of their group, ending their dismal campaign with a draw against Costa Rica. This World Cup has officially been the worst in half a century for England. Brazil are starting to show the form that has made them favourites after demolishing Cameroon 4-1. However emphatic the scoreline, Brazil’s defence does seem very suspect and could be a problem later on in the

tournament, although with leading World Cup scorer Neymar anything is possible in their home country. Greece scored a penalty in the ninetieth minute to secure their place in the last sixteen at the expense of the Ivory Coast. Greece can consider themselves fortunate as they have now score more goals at this World Cup than their previous four. Uruguay dumped four time winners of the World Cup Italy out of the tournament after defeating them 1-0, however the game was marred in controversy as Luis Suarez appeared to bite Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini, Suarez’s World Cup appears to be over and could face a

and dinosaur like attitudes but faced possibly the srongest criticism of his leadership after calling the English FA “racist and discriminatory” after they accused him and FIFA of corruption at the highest level. FA Chairman Greg Dyke retaliated by calling Blatter’s accusations “unacceptable” and explained that “the allegations were nothing to do with racism. They are allegations about corruption within Fifa, and need to be properly investigated and properly answered.” The situation has deteriorated to such an extent that long term ally and head of UEFA, Michael Platini has refused to support Sepp Blatter. Leading to suggestions that Platini could put himself forward as a candidate to replace him. By

lengthy suspension, it is the third time he has been caught biting an opponent during his career. Argentina having already booked their place in the last sixteen thanks to mini magician Messi, scoring against a stubborn and valiant Iran side who threatened to instigate one of the biggest upsets in the history of world football. Iran finally losing 1-0 to a Messi wonder strike. With Portugal scoring in the ninetieth minute against the USA to keep their faint hopes of qualification alive. It will be seen whether another World Cup miracle takes place and they scrape through. Until next week readers Gaaaame on.

WORLD CUP ROUND UP! FIFA Doubling Wages Ex SFA Chief Executive David Taylor dies

Latest betting tips for the week ahead

Neil Lennon has admitted that whilst he was manager of Celtic he asked some of his players to pull out of playing for their national side, during crucial stages of the season. Lennon’s squad consisted of a team that had players from across the world. Players such as Ki Sung Yeung, Beram Kayal, Tom Rogic, Emilio Izaguirre, Nir Biton, Victor Wanyama and Efe Ambrose have had to travel to the four corners of the world on a very regular basis, resulting in many hours spent in the air, away from the squad. Lennon, however emphasised that he would only lean on players if the match was a meaningless friendly, on asking players to occasionally pick club over country “Of course I did. There comes a time in the season when you are playing Champions League, you are playing league games, cup games and then you have (international) friendlies. “You may have players who have played 40- odd international games already, do they need to go and

play an extra game in an Eastern European country?” The current situation regarding player burn out has reared its ugly head after QPR manager Harry Redknapp admitted to having players regularly ask to be withdrawn from the England squad while he was Spurs boss. Neil Lennon explained the conundrum that players face in the war between club and country “They train on the Monday, travel on Tuesday, play on Wednesday and you wont get them back til Thursday or Friday. I have had international players from Japan and South Korea. They leave on the Sunday after the Saturday game and I don’t see them again until Friday before a 12.30 kick off maybe in Aberdeen.” New Celtic manager Ronny Deila will have to face the club vs country conundrum before to long with many of his players still plying their trade in the World Cup whilst the remainder of the players returned to pre season action on Tuesday.
