Drugs Bust in Glasgow see page 14

Police Officers in Glasgow uncovered £1,000,000 pounds worth of drugs from a house in the Carntyne area of Glasgow. The drug which is believed to be heroin, is only one, in a long line of drug busts by Glasgow’s officers. The ambitious raid also managed to uncover tablets, a firearm and ammunition, successfully removing the threat from the streets of Glasgow.

A 35 year old man was charged in connection with the raid and subsequently released. He is due to appear in court in conjunction with the police raid at a later date. A report is due to be submitted to the procurator fiscal. This latest raid pales in comparison to one that took place in 1999 when officers managed to uncover Heroin with a street value of £260,000,000 million pounds with officers saying at the time “that this

Bedroom Tax

14th February - 28th February 2014 | Glasgow News 5

Banished The Scottish Parliament and Government have agreed to cover the full cost of housing benefit cuts, subsequently allowing people to remain in their home. Ultimately the hated Bedroom Tax will be abolished in Scotland, both SNP and opposition party Labour have agreed to join forces and rid Scotland of one of Scotland’s most hated Tory led policies since the Poll Tax. The deal will see Labour agree to vote for an SNP budget for the first time since the SNP government won power in 2007, showing that political parties in Scotland can agree on policy for the benefit of the Scottish people. Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said they are “more than willing” to put in the extra £15million required. There are still minor details to be ironed out concerning how the money will be distributed and what to do about the victims who have already

been affected the Con-Dem tax. The Scottish Government is demanding that the UK Government change the law to allow local councils to distribute the extra income provided. This will enable councils to provide money to those tenants who have fallen behind in paying rent. Labour are happy to agree to this method but should the UK Government be determined to block the plan, have a variety of other methods allowing people some reprieve from the threat of homelessness. The hated policy, which as recently as last week, was deemed a breach of human rights, due to its harmful effects on societies poor and disabled is effectively being neutralised.

United Nations inspector Raquel Rolnik, who conducted the investigation into the Bedroom Tax has refused to be drawn into a war of words with the Conservative attack on her objectivity and accusations of Marxism and will instead present her finding to the Human Rights Council in New York on March 10. She said tenants “faced hard choices between food, heating or paying the rent and faced the harshness of being evicted from the house they had spent their entire life living in” Raquel, who has worked in the UN for five years, spending time in countries such as Kazakhstan and Rwanda, highlighted the alarming plight of people due to the Bedroom Tax. In a report which widely condemned the

Con Dem policy as illegal and warned that the policy and Britain’s lack of social housing was diminishing the worlds view of Britain and its treatment of its vulnerable and disabled members of society. Local MP Katy Clark has welcomed the news of the Scottish Government in conjunction with Labour after months of delays and political infighting, agreed to fully mitigate the Bedroom Tax in Scotland. Hugely vocal in her hatred of the unjust tax she called on the SNP to stop using the abolishment of the tax as a policy for independence and help the most vulnerable now. Katy Clark had this to say ““This announcement is most welcome and will end the suffering of those who have been hammered by the bedroom

tax in Scotland.” She passionately continued “As an opponent of the Tory policy I have been calling on the SNP Government to take this stance for a year. They have consistently said they oppose the policy but then refused to use the powers available to them to tackle it instead favouring to use it as part of the independence debate. It should never have been part of that debate and I am glad that through pressure from the Scottish Labour Party and anti-bedroom tax campaigners across Scotland they have now decided to provide the funds to fully mitigate it, something they always had the power to do.”

First Glasgow’s Parkhead Learning Urban Wireless Project For Glasgow Centre Awarded 1st Place At Lifelong By Michael McDaid

Glasgow is set to become Scotland’s first city with a dedicated wireless internet service for residents and visitors. The service for which the contract has been awarded to BT will be at no cost to the Glasgow City Council. This is due to the fact that it has been awarded on a concession basis, in which BT will design, operate and maintain the service with the use of Council owned street furniture.

The contract between the Glasgow City Council and BT is set to run for eight years with an optional two year extension at the Council’s discretion. BT will be delivering the wifi infrastructure, with the first phase of the Urban Wireless programme delivered ahead of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. This will see between 50 - 80 wireless access points installed around high footfall areas and transport hubs around the city centre and parts of the East End. Free wifi will improve on people’s experience of living in, working in or visiting Glasgow by enabling them to have access, via smartphones and tablet computers, to the council’s online services, tourist and event information, job sites, local businesses and services.

There will be free 24-hour access to the network for the first six months and after this period there will be free access for 30 minutes per day per handset. Access to some sites, including Glasgow City Council’s website will remain free permanently. The Urban Wireless programme is part of the city council’s Digital Glasgow roadmap published in January 2014, which aims to place Glasgow as a world-leading digital city by 2017, supporting economic and social regeneration. The Urban Wireless Concession will enable BT to deliver a variety of wireless technologies and enhance current and future wireless and mobile coverage within Glasgow including 3G and 4G through Small Cell technology.

The next phase of Glasgow’s wireless network will be rolled out towards early 2015, extending coverage more widely throughout the city.

First’s Parkhead depot finished first in the ‘Learning Centre of Excellence’ silver category competing against more than 50 learning centres across First’s UK operations. Over the last year the number of people using the Parkhead Workplace Learning Centre has significantly increased – there has been more than 2500 visits so far in 2013, an increase of almost 10%. The awards highlight the importance of First’s Workplace Learning Centres and focus on the learning achievements of First’s employees. Managing Director of First Glasgow, Fiona Kerr, said: “I’m delighted that our Parkhead Learning Centre has enjoyed such success at the Lifelong Learning Awards. We want to give our people the opportunity to develop their skills and I’m really pleased more colleagues than ever before are making the most of the learning centres across our six depots, and in

particular at our Parkhead facility.” One user of the Learning Centre is 53 year old driver from Viewpark, Samuel Ward, who has used the Workplace Learning Centre to improve his reading, writing and numerical skills. He said: “The support I’ve received from First and Unite the Union through the Parkhead Learning Centre has been first class. I joined the company five years ago and at that time was struggling to read and write. With the help of the Workplace Learning Centre my skills have dramatically increased, so too has my confidence and self-esteem. I’m now able to help with my children with homework.

Sneaky Dermot slithers his way into Cities Botanical Gardens Employees at Glasgow’s Botanical Gardens were greeted with a suspicious looking character basking in the heat of the gardens palm house.

Employees were alarmed to find a two foot long non venomous Californian king snake taking refuge from the harsh winter weather in the cities Botanical Gardens. Naming him Dermot, they are quite puzzled as to how he ended up residing

in the warmth of the palm house. Either he escaped from his home and was drawn toward the warmth of the Botanical enclosure or a pet owner thought that although they couldn’t take care of him anymore, they didn’t want any harm to come to him. Releasing him into the warmth of the Botanical Garden. Although honourable in the merit of duly caring about the well-being of a pet, unfortunately it is still very

irresponsible and also an offence.

Asssssistant(sic) Manager Katrina Cavanagh said “Snakes need heat to survive so it’s not surprising Dermot was keeping warm inside the palm house. “We can’t be sure how he got there but it’s possible someone abandoned him, thinking it was a suitable environment. If this was the case it was very irresponsible as well as an offence. The Scottish SPCA are hoping to

reunite Dermot with his owner, but are also keen to state that snakes are excellent escape artists and might have simply escaped from his nearby home, got cold and headed for the first bit of heat he could find. Kirsty continued “Snakes are really good escape artists though so there’s also a chance Dermot has gone missing from his home nearby and was drawn towards the heat. “We’re asking anyone who recognises Dermot and knows who might have owned him to contact us so we can try to establish how he came to be there.” Dermot the snake is now being cared for by the Glasgow Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Cardonald Glasgow’s world renowned Botanical Garden’s which celebrates its 200th

Kirsty had this to say about Dermot and if no-one comes forth and claims ownership of him “If no-one comes forward for Dermot we’ll find him a knowledgeable new home where his needs will be met for the rest of his life.” She finished “Anyone who recognises Dermot is being asked to call the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.”

Schools baton follows in fashion of Commonwealth The Glasgow schools’ baton has now visited 38 schools and nurseries across the city as it mirrors the Queen’s baton’s journey across the Commonwealth. This week the youngsters at Westerhouse Family Learning Centre will welcome the baton with open arms from St Rose of Lima PS pupils and take part in their own mini commonwealth games and bury a Commonwealth Games time capsule. The children, helped by staff have chosen a number of items to include in the capsule, flags, drawings of 2014 mascot Clyde, and a pen drive with facts and figures about their nursery and local community. Clyde (the Commonwealth mascot) will also be popping along on the morning to help the children dig a spot in the nursery garden, to bury the capsule. Schools and nurseries across Glasgow have been very imaginative in their ideas on how to transport the baton from school to school and each celebrating hosting the baton in a variety of ways. The schools’ baton was waved off by the Lord Provost Sadie Docherty in October when she handed over the specially

designed baton to pupils from Balornock Primary school as they embarked on the first leg of the ten-month relay. The baton will arrive back at the City Chambers in June at the same time as the Queen’s Baton. More than 70 schools and nurseries will take part in the event, organised by the council’s active, schools co-ordinators, and gives pupils and staff the chance to take part in the build-up to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Travelling in excess of 203 miles – schools taking part are devising their own ways of transporting the baton from school to school and the relay will mirror the countries where the Queen’s Baton as the chosen school is twinned. Councillor Stephen Curran, Executive Member for Education and Young People said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for our school children to be actively involved in the countdown to Glasgow 2014

Commonwealth Games. “The fact that the schools’ baton relay is mirroring the Queen’s Baton and using the schools twinned with each country the baton will be travelling to is a genius idea. “Over the next few months the excitement will mount as schools celebrate the baton coming to their school and local community and raising the profile of the games to as wide an audience as possible. “I’m excited to hear about all of the weird and wonderful ways the pupils and schools staff have dreamed-up for their leg of the relay and have been watching the progress with interest.” Liam Doherty, 14 years of age, from St Andrew’s Secondary won a city-wide competition to design the special baton. Glasgow and Cube Housing Association’s Gold Medal Legacy programme funded the production of the baton and made by local company, Product Design.

How to protect yourself and your family from the silent killer. Follow Gas Safe Register’s top tips to help prevent poisoning from deadly carbon monoxide (CO). Exposure to highly poisonous carbon monoxide (CO) gas is still leading to preventable deaths. Known as the silent killer because you can’t see it, taste it or smell it, CO can leak into your home as a result of poorly fitted and dangerous gas appliances such as boilers, cookers and fires. Gas Safe Register, the official registration body for gas engineers, is working to make the UK safer from CO poisoning. In the past year, nine people have died from poisoning as a result of exposure to carbon monoxide caused by gas appliances, and many more have suffered serious long term health problems. An estimated 4,000

people go to hospital each year with symptoms of CO poisoning, which in severe cases can lead to brain damage. To keep your home and family safe, the Register has issued a set of top tips which could help prevent CO leaks, explosions and fires, and keep homes and families safe. Know the symptoms of CO poisoning – You will not be able to smell, taste or see carbon monoxide in your home. Knowing the symptoms of CO poisoning could save your life. The six main symptoms of CO poisoning are: Headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse, and loss of

consciousness. Know the signs of CO in the home – Sometimes your home may show signs of CO. Any one of the following could be an indication that CO is present in your home. The flame on your cooker should be crisp and blue. Lazy yellow or orange flames mean you need to get your cooker checked. Dark staining or sooting around or on appliances. Pilot lights that frequently blow out. Increased condensation inside windows. Get gas appliances checked regularly – Faulty and unsafe gas appliances can produce CO, so get your appliances checked at least once a year by a Gas Safe registered engineer. To sign up to our free reminder service, which will alert you when your appliance needs checking, visit www.staygassafe. co.uk. Only use a Gas Safe registered engineer – one in five illegal gas jobs the Register investigates are deemed immediately dangerous, so make sure you only use a Gas Safe registered engineer. You can check an engineer is registered by asking to see their Gas Safe Register ID card and find local registered engineers at www. gassaferegister.co.uk or by calling 0800 4085500. Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm – Much like a fire alarm, a CO alarm will alert you to the presence of CO in your home. Russell Kramer, chief executive of Gas Safe Register, said: “Even low levels of carbon monoxide can cause serious harm when breathed in over a long period of time, so being able to recognise the symptoms early is crucial in helping to prevent injuries and death. “We are urging anyone with gas appliances to be aware of how to spot the dangers. Gas engineers who are not registered are working illegally,

and could be putting you and your family at risk.” He added: “One of the best lines of defence is to get appliances checked annually and to always to use a Gas Safe registered engineer. Visit our online gas safety map at www. staygassafe.co.uk to find out exactly how many gas incidents there have

been in your area, and to find local registered engineers.” For more information about Gas Safe Register, CO poisoning, fitting a CO alarm and finding legal, qualified gas engineers in your area – visit www.gassaferegister.co.uk or call the helpline on 0800 408 5500.

Get the complete solution to weight loss Curves Complete combines the right exercise with the right meal plan and one on one coaching to maximize weight loss and rev up your metabolism. And as always, you get the support and encouragement of the Curves Community to help you reach your goals Being unable to fit in cinema seats, plane seats, severe threat to health and severe agoraphobia, pick any one of these reasons for Tracy Henderson’s reasons for joining Curves in March 2012.

But look at her now and it’s hard to comprehend that this slim sleek woman could ever have been circling 27 stone on the scales and endangering her health.

“Since joining Curves I’ve gained back confidence, come closer to my goal weight as well as learning new things that I’d never ever thought I’d see myself doing, like Curves Circuit With Zumba.”

Manager of Curves, Jacqueline Pollock, had this to say about Tracy when they first crossed paths in the gym ““She was so overweight she got stuck in a garden chair in the summer” “Tracy was unable to go to the cinema because the seats were too small, and did not even use the front door of gym because she had to get a taxi that would drop her at the back.” Unbelievably Tracy is now training to become a Curves instructor and is using her remarkable transformation as incentive for other people of a heavy nature to see that with determination and the help of a good gym, you can achieve radical results Tracy had this to say “Before joining curves I just felt so lost, I had no confidence and the very thought of joining any gym scared the life out of me as I had many bad experiences in the past.” The remarkable woman continued

Jaqui Pollock spoke of Tracy’s nerves when first joining Curves ““Tracy came to us a year ago and could barely fit in the machines, she suffered severe agoraphobia, but today can enjoy simple things that most of us find easy like going to the cinema, because she can fit in the seat, a leisurely stroll in her local supermarket and most of all walk through the front of the Curves doors in the morning because before she had to come in the back entrance straight out a taxi.”

Tracy is now a proud eleven stones and counting shedding more than half her entire bodyweight, fourteen stones as you can see from the adjacent photographs, it’s possible to fit two people into trousers previously worn by the successful slimmer. She stuck with the programme through sheer determination and focus and dropped “29 inches from her waist, 43 inches from her hips, and ten inches from her thighs. In total, she lost 144.25 inches from around her whole body, and shed 14 stone. Tracy, who is 30 and lives in Toryglen in Glasgow, said joining the gym was “one of the best decisions that I have ever made.”

“Fortunately for me Curves isn’t like any other gym. From the moment you enter the door you are made to feel so welcome and at ease. There is such a diversity of woman of different

ages and backgrounds that all share the same common goals “to lose weight and improve their health”. All members are so supportive of one another and always have a kind word to say, it really is such an absolute pleasure to be in their company each day. The instructors are amazing and such a credit to their profession. “ “It is genuinely one of my most favourite places to be and I believe it’s helped to change my life in so many ways as it has many other women.” What is even more special is the staff believed in me and entered me into UK Curvevette of the Year which I won in 2013!

Reiki Healing

Joan Charles

I am delighted to be delivering your stars although; I won’t be doing them in the traditional way, as I am not an astrologer. For many years I have provided the stars using Tarot cards and that is what I will be doing here, so I guess in a sense they should be called, Taroscopes. Anyway, I do hope you enjoy what the cards have to say.

Aries

Over the week ahead it feels like home is where the heart is and perhaps you won’t want to be too far from it or the family. You need to trust that perhaps this is just what’s called for and go with it until you feel like getting back into the “ Norm”

Taurus

I sense that you will be weighing up your options where work or career is concerned and looking ultimately to improve on things in this area. The other point to keep an eye on is the work life balance, as things seem to have been top heavy in favour of work.

Gemini

Emotionally you could be feeling that your wearing a mask to suit others and this is not allowing your true feelings to come to the surface. Normally you are in control of things in this area but at this present time it appears to be difficult.

Cancer

Issues of the past could be challenging you and keeping you from getting a rested sleep – you could change this by facing it head on and off loading it once and for all. It is time you took hold of the reins and became the driver of your own destiny.

Leo

It could feel as if everyone wants a piece of you and that you only have enough energy to do so much but you don’t want to let anyone down. If you look after yourself first others will benefit and that way you have a win – win situation.

Virgo

In today’s world where alternative therapies commonly work alongside traditional medicine Reiki is one of many. But, people often wonder - what is Reiki? Many have heard of it but are not sure quite what it is or more importantly what it is not? Reiki is a form of natural healing which works with energy, encouraging the body to heal itself at all levels, physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. It is not a religion, massage, dangerous or difficult nor does it conflict with or replace traditional medicine, on the contrary, even the most sceptical of critics have found nothing that suggests it is unsafe. It is suitable for all ages, from very young babies to the elderly as it’s non -invasive and requires no specialist equipment. Originating in Japan, Reiki travelled to the West in the 1930s and its popularity has continued to grow with many people now choosing to learn Reiki to self heal as well as receiving regular treatments. During a Reiki treatment your comfort is top of the agenda. Staying fully clothed you can lie or sit, it is very common to fall asleep during a treatment so choose what will suit you best. With your eyes closed and music playing the therapist will work through a series

By Susan Hamilton

of hand positions; hands being placed very lightly on or inches above key points along the length of your body, for anything from up to a few seconds to several minutes, starting at the head and finishing at the feet. At no time will the touch be invasive nor at any time will there be pressure or manipulation. Experiences during a Reiki treatment vary from person to person. The most common experience is the feeling of heat coming from the therapist hands, whether physically touching or not. Sometimes there is coolness or tingling whilst others people experience nothing at all. Whether you feel anything, believe or don’t believe in Reiki, if needed or wanted, the healing energy will be received.

Once the energy starts to flow it will go where it is needed to bring healing and balance by releasing blocked energies, clearing toxins and working to create a state of balance. Reiki calms thoughts and emotions and the body will only accept the energy it needs. It is important to know that a Reiki practitioner should never promise that Reiki will do anything other benefit everyone that experiences it. Many choose to attend one of the many Reiki teaching groups available,

ensuring this wonderful therapy is on tap to use 24/7 – a Reiki Master through an attunement transfers it to the student, which is a way of connecting the student to the energy source so they will physically experience and attract energy themselves. The body’s energy channels are opened and cleared of obstructions by the attunement and flow with Reiki energy, it’s like flicking on a light switch.

Reiki is something everyone has the ability to use, it is within us all and all a Reiki Master is doing is turning on that switch. Reiki I is passed from Master to Student over several teaching levels and attunements; and is primarily for self healing, Reiki II takes you one step further and teaches the healing of others and distance healing, while Advanced Reiki is for those who wish to attain Masters level but do not wish to teach and Masters is for the serious healer who wants to teach. The term Master is simply a term for teacher, someone who has mastered a discipline. Susan offers Reiki classes from Reiki1 to Masters For more information Email: hamilton748@btinternet.com or call Mob: 07779 329762.

All work and no play is just no fun, you could do with a bit more time to let your hair down and relax. Being a Virgo your really practical minded so in order for you to allow yourself this luxury you might need a to do list to help you get through the other things.

Libra

Now, when you want to speak your mind others sit up and take notice and it is at this point things happen. You have an air of authority if needs be although; it’s not your preferred way of dealing with situations.

Scorpio

I feel a new phase where learning or expanding your horizons could be on the cards. Maybe this is something you have been thinking about for a while now but have just not got round to doing – watch for opportunities presenting themselves.

Sagittarius

You could find yourself spoilt for choice when invitations come your way. It’s the same old story, nothing happens for ages then all of a sudden everything comes at once. I sense you will enjoy the chance to get out and do some socialising.

You might be watching your hard earned cash and trying to make it work for you instead of it going out as fast as it came in. it seems like you are going to have your canny Scots head on for the time being until things turn the corner. Whoopi do, some nice new cash could be making its way to you but it comes after a period of sewing new seeds and watching them grow so, whatever you have put effort into may be about to pay off for you.

Pisces

I’m sensing that you are in a place of stability and security and that is just the way you like it. You like to know that there are no surprises coming out of the woodwork that you had not anticipated and that’s why you plan ahead.

Hypnosis & Weight Control Josephine Mackenzie BSC (Hons) Psychology, PG Cert Clinical Hypnosis, Clinical Practitioner. MBPS MBSCH Out of the old year and very much into the new and our thoughts turn to getting in shape and weight lose as our next target of the holidays is looming and we want to look our best. Clinical hypnosis is a useful personal tool for stress management, goal setting and relaxation. It can also be an excellent addition to the range of professional techniques available to anyone working within the caring professions. Hypnosis creates a state of relaxation, the therapeutic component allows the patient to access positive states, and it can also be used as a stress reduction mechanism, as well as enhancing the patient’s responsiveness to change. An ideal example of using hypnosis for change is in the area of weight control by re-programming the unconscious mind about choices or the hypno-band gastric band technique. Whilst few would be slimmer’s do achieve their goals, the majority invariably end up even more over weight, a result of the ‘vicious circle’ of loss-gain. An increasing number of these ‘failures’ are now turning to hypnotherapy, usually as a last resort.

So, how does Clinical hypnosis work as a tool in enabling us to lose weight painlessly? The reason so many people fail to lose weight or maintain weight loss is simple - they have not addressed the issues, which cause them to overeat in the first place. What happens then is, they go back to their old habits and pile the pounds back on and some more. There is a saying, ‘it’s not what we eat, but what’s eating us’ and it is true, self- loathing, feelings of hopelessness, helpless, worthless and lack of love. Many people are emotional eaters, they push down their feeling with biscuits, cakes, chocolates and any old thing that tastes good (and full of sugar) because food security and love are so intertwined that we cannot think of one without the other. I had a patient who had gone through a ‘Gastric Band’ surgery only to find that she was still dealing with ‘emotional eating’ when she came to see me, she had taken this drastic step to lose weight but emotions had not been dealt with. Clinical hypnosis can help locate and redress those issues that make

us overeat, by re-programming the unconscious mind and changing our relationship with food forever; the result of which is, losing weight and maintaining that loss over time because it is now an unconscious action to eat less and exercise a little or a lot whatever is relevant to the lifestyle of the patient. A huge issue I find with overweight and obese people is early programming whereby it was considered ‘a sin’ to waste food, as children we were forced to finish every scrap of food on the plate. Clinical hypnosis will remedy issues with reprogramming, teaching how to eat less, and that it is ok to actually leave food on the plate when we are full. You will begin to trust yourself and your responses to food will become healthy, unemotional, and the right choices will be made when eating and shopping for food. You begin to listen to your body and eat mindfully, paying attention to every mouthful and eating slowly, deliberately and enjoy savouring every mouthful of good nutritious food. You will also have no desire for unhealthy sugary fattening foods because your unconscious mind will make those choices for you. In essence, most

people know what they have to do to lose weight the therapist simply takes that knowledge from the conscious (aware) part of the mind where it is currently, and moves it to the back of their mind the (unconscious) part where it can become a habit. So all that we know we ‘should’ do to lose weight becomes a habit.

I just love revamping pieces of furniture and am excited to see the end result and the client’s faces when they see the outcome. When working on furniture, I use chalkbased paint so that it’s child friendly as well as for the big kids hands too. The exciting bit is finding easy and affordable ways of getting furniture to work my magic on; it’s all part of the fun.

I’m always revamping my own much loved pieces in the home and look for new techniques, sometimes a simple lick of paint, new handles or a spray of silver paint just gives it that glamorous look and makes the old seem new again. The best places to find these treasures and cheap items are in charity or second hand shops, house clearances, Gum Tree and EBay. Finding little bargains then using your imagination, it what its all about. With money being tight, especially at the start of the year, worrying about the home and high street cost is the last

thing you need.

I use chalk paint, but not everyone has a budget for that - you could use eggshell paint as an alternative. Emulsions are a good alternative as well - then use a sponge to put it on, the kind you would use for your dishes, it’s a wee tip that I found very handy when starting off. Another great idea is, a dusting rag, it’s especially good for white washing a piece of furniture. Folk love the shabby chic style, it’s so elegant and fresh next to any colour scheme once its finished. The first item I am going to talk you through is a 1970 telephone table I had the pleasure of working on. I started by painting it all over in a light Dove Grey, not to dark to begin with - I let it dry over night to allow the paint to breath.

MY TIP

Get yourself a tester pot of any paint to work with - that saves money instead

Before of buying a full pot of coloured paint, Shabby especially if its a colour you’re not likely to use again, £1 max is better that £10 - £15 out of your purse or wallet. I bought glitter paint and brushed over the dove Grey, this gave the chair a shine and a glam feel to really make it stand out. I left it to dry overnight to make sure that when I added the final glitter coat to it - it was a more intense finish.

MY TIP

If you don’t have £8 to buy small 125ml glitter paint, you could buy bags of glitter and mix in with a PVA glue, this gives a similar effect depending on the amount of glitter you mix in with the PVA.

After I purchased a silver craft pen to go over the beads that where already on the chair and still in amazing condition, which cost me £5 - quite expensive.

MY TIP

Always check EBay or Amazon for cheaper products to save money. Also, adding Swarovski jeweled buttons to the chair, which I sewed on, gave it that extra bling look.

MY TIP

Check your local craft or haberdashery shops for buttons, they can be quite expensive in places on the high street from £1 upwards for 1 button but shop about for cheap ones and you can get them in wee shops from 35p - 55p each but try the internet as well.

Keep your eyes peeled in the next issue as I will be sharing more tips on how to make use of what you already have and what you could be doing with the items you find. Reasonable prices, Shabby Cheap Cheapness because, it’s better to make the best of what you have than, spend a fortune.

Sing Through Sorrow: a community choir with a difference! By Allana Grant

Next month will see the 2D’s School of Creative Arts launch their latest project. Sing Through Sorrow, the project is a community choir; established to combat the many devastating effects of bereavement through song.

Laura also goes on to detail how she hopes the initiative will benefit those involved telling me: “There have been many studies conducted in recent years to highlight the positive physical and psychological effects of choral singing.

The Sing Through Sorrow group wishes to create a relaxed environment where people of all ages, who have been affected by bereavement, can reap the psychological and physical benefits of singing as well as meeting others who understand their situation. The initiative was developed by the 2D’s School, an organisation which strives to promote the performing arts and their benefits towards an individual’s physical, emotional and social well being. I recently met with the director of 2D’s Laura Kayes, to discuss the sing Through Sorrow initiative. Laura also told me about her background and how personal experiences drove her to setting up 2D’s. The first question I asked Laura was what inspired her to set up the organization, she replied with a candid

There is also of course the social aspect and shared understanding of the grieving process. My younger cousin had taken their own life in August of that year and by September I knew I had to keep busy to stop myself wallowing in feelings of grief and guilt. Crystal Meth ready to hit Glasgow’s shores

Drug Dealers are primed and ready to hit Glasgow with deadly drug Crystal Meth, made famous by the worldwide smash programme Breaking Bad.

According to figures released by the Scottish Police seizures of the highly addictive stimulant have spiralled since 2009 and since then police across the country recovered more than 200 methamphetamine tablets, and there have even been rumours that in Glasgow on social media forums people are advertising an interest in selling the drug. Labour MSP Graeme Pearson, a former director general of the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency, said: “I think methamphetamine – which has affected many areas in England and Wales – is a present threat in Scotland. “The difficulty with meth is that it doesn’t take hi-tech lab facilities to produce. “It can be produced reasonably easily in a house, a garage or industrial unit.” A police spokesman said: “We are aware of this activity on the internet and are investigating the matter.” In the smash hit programme Bryan Cranston’s character Walter White creates a Crystal Meth empire after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.

An Interview With “Glasgow Green” Author Jake Walker Curley By Michael McDaid

This week, Glaswegian author Jake Walker Curley, creator of the crime thriller novel “Glasgow Green” stopped by the Glasgow News to have a chat about the book and how it came to be written. So Jake what is the book about?: “The book is centered around a character who has served 20 years in prison and the night before he is released he prays to God and asks for two things, first that he can make amends with a man in his past who is now deceased and secondly that he can finally fall in love, his efforts to make amends are soon put under pressure as he meets a young woman who he falls in love with, who was connected to the deceased and is now in a world of trouble and he will have to kill in order to keep her alive”. What inspired you to write the book? “Originally I was a panel beater working in the city but I got tired of doing that so I went to the John Wheatley college on the Shettleston Road to study the arts as I have always had an interest in them, but since I left school around the age of 16 it had been a long time since I had done anything with it. Things went well at college so after I finished my course there, I moved on to art college in Edinburgh, it was there that I started writing

all seemed to come together. My confidence really came on once I started the editing process, and went through a mentoring process just before I sent it away to the printers, I was really chuffed with it.

short stories. A few years after I finished art college I attended a screenwriting class where things started coming together.” How did the idea for the story come about?

It’s been a great process, taking peoples advice on board and seeing it all come together. Editing the book also helped me to take out some scenes which were slowing it down, by taking them out it really added some great pace and urgency to the story”.

“Well the idea for the book came from when I was taking part in a screenwriting class and I was asked to pitch a movie in 15 words or less. I came up with the line ‘A man leaves prison determined to make amends for the crimes he got away with’. However, I had already written a short story entitled ‘McGuire’, which was loosely based on a well known Glasgow gangster. I took one of the secondary characters from the short, ‘Joe’ who was McGuire’s childhood friend and promoted him to being the main character.”

What has the reaction been like from critics and readers?

How long did the book take you to complete? “I have been writing the book

sporadically for about eight years. Since this was my first novel I was never too confident that I could write a novel, but as it developed it

“The reception has been really good, most people that have read it have loved it. I haven’t had any negative criticism and it’s been really great, as I said I wasn’t the most confident guy before putting it out but now I’m really happy with it. A lot of readers are already asking for a sequel.”.

Regarding a sequel, when do you plan on having one out and what will it be about? “I’m planning on giving myself a year to write it. It’s going to answer a lot of questions that were raised in the first book. To get into the mindframe to write it I’m taking walks around the areas of the city where the book is set and where the characters spend their time. It’s good to walk in the shoes of the characters, it’s interesting because these places are also places from my childhood growing up in the East End and they bring back a lot of personal memories too.” Thank you Jake for coming to speak to us today, we here at the Glasgow News wish you every success and we’re looking forward to the sequel. The book which is entitled “Glasgow Green” is available in print at Waterstones books and Blackwells books and can be ordered from Tyne and Esk Writers for £6.99. It is also available on Amazon in both print and kindle formats at £6.99 and £3.79 respectively.

Philanthropis In Our Midst 20 Glasgow News | 14th February - 28th February 2014

www.glasgow-news.com

Andrew Carnegie and his son Darren have been helping people make ends meet for many years at their own personal expense.

In late October of last year, the pair decided to devote their philanthropic efforts in order to help an even greater number of vulnerable people across the city. Andrew and Darren took their dedication to helping the less fortunate amongst us to a whole new level, as they could see that now more than ever there were people in dire need of assistance around the festive period and beyond. With the pair working non stop for the last four months making their final delivery on the ninth of February this year. Darren Carnegie has told the Glasgow News how the food drive came into being and how through their efforts, life was made a little easier for around 300 disadvantaged people around the city. Andrew got the project off the ground initially by utilizing his extensive network of contacts from other charitable endeavours, particularly through his work with the “Way Side Club” and the “Marion Action Group”. Andrew was able to draw on his immense experience in the charitable sector in order to get the people in need what they needed. Darren commented on his fathers tireless work saying that he was “astonished at his father’s knowledge and ability to find those in need”. Andrew and Darren also used their own time and investigated the areas they were going to be working in all across the city. The pair through speaking to residents of the communities earmarked for their help were able to identify those who were particularly in need. Alongside this grassroots work, the pair also utilized social networks in their drive to get help to those who needed it. Darren told us “some people contacted us looking for help, while others contacted us in order to tell us about people they

knew who were in need of assistance”. Darren described what they saw through their investigations into those who needed assistance saying: “Everyone was different in their own way and everyone’s circumstances were different but one thing that was for sure was that they all needed help surviving, as they were struggling with even the basics. Some of the sights we seen can only be described disturbing and traumatic.”. Those who Andrew and Darren aimed to help were not only in a state of poverty as regards their food supplies but some were also suffering from fuel poverty, as some of the people they visited did not have enough money for gas or electricity. More worryingly, around 10 of the people they visited did not even have basic cooking appliances. In response to this Andrew and Darren also issued a plea asking for unwanted cookers and other household appliances and they made sure that those in need had gas and electricity. Alongside this grassroots work, the pair also utilized social networks in their drive to get help to those who needed it. This allowed them to get in contact with even more people and make possible donors aware of the work Andrew and Darren were doing. Once the word had got round about the food drive project, the pair received extremely generous donations from around 60 benefactors and one local business in Tollcross, the “Wellshot Dairy” who provided a “huge donation”. Darren also spoke to Smithycroft school and was permitted to address the pupils at their morning assembly for a week, as a result of this the school donated a minibus worth of food from the teachers and pupils. Both the “Wellshot Dairy” and Smithycroft school have pledged their support for the next food drive project. Thanks to these generous donations the Carnegie household was “absolutely full to the brim with boxes and bags of food” this lack of space was quickly compounded by the fact that people were responding to the need for appliances and other basic necessities, including cookers, fridges, microwaves and bedding.

We plan on making it even bigger next year and instead of 300 being helped we want to make it 3000 The pair then began distributing what had been donated Darren explained the way in which they distributed the donations: “each individual received at least a whole week’s supply of food and treats. So if it was a family of five they would receive five times the amount. We realise the amount of stress people are under living in

poverty throughout the year and that it is particularly difficult at Christmas so we hoped we could give them at least enough food to take pressure off the people.”.

and we do not discriminate against anyone or anything.” Darren also went on to say how the food bank also gave “to people who came to this country for a better life.”

The pair operated the project on a totally non discriminatory basis “Our motto was that everyone is welcome

Andrew and Darren would like to publicly thank everyone who donated food, appliances, time and effort to

the project for all their hard work and effort. They have also went on to say how they wish to expand the initiative next year: “We plan on making it even bigger next year and instead of 300 being helped we want to make it 3000 and we know with hard work and the help of the EGN and other people we can make this happen.”

www.glasgow-news.com As the Bill went through Parliament I became more and more convinced that there were big risks in this legislation. I believe there is a serious chance that ministers, priests, public sector workers, and even charity volunteers could be dragged into the courts or be otherwise disadvantaged if they speak out in favour of the traditional view of marriage.

Although the replacement SPT service, which has been operating on a temporary basis since December, is not quite as comprehensive as the previous number 2 service, it does provide an evening link which would otherwise not be available.

Margaret Curran MP

Curran welcomes SPT’s extension of 213/A bus service until July 2016 Glasgow East MP Margaret Curran has welcomed the recent news that SPT and Henderson Travel have signed a contract guaranteeing an hourly evening bus service from Airdrie/Coatbridge to Glasgow, passing by the periphery of Swinton, until at least July 2016. This service fills the gaps left by First Glasgow’s removal of the Baillieston to Airdrie section of the Number 2 bus last August – a move which was met with strong opposition from many Swinton residents and their MP Ms Curran.

Ms Curran said: ‘I am delighted that SPT has agreed to fund this route until at least July 2016, securing vital evening links from Swinton to both the City Centre and the Lanarkshire towns to the East. Yet the uncertainty which followed First’s decision to unilaterally remove such a vital service shows precisely why we need bus regulation. Regulation would introduce transparency to an industry that has been allowed to operate as it pleases for too long and empower local authorities to ensure that every area gets a decent bus service. It is unfortunate, therefore, that the SNP Government is siding with the bus companies and refusing to back re-regulation.’

Commuters can access the 213/A timetable by visiting www.spt.co.uk/bus or calling 01698 713007.

I am glad to say I was not the only one thinking this at Holyrood. Although all five party leaderships supported the Bill, it was encouraging to have a number of SNP and Labour colleagues as well some Tories working together to question the assurances that were being given. It is not always easy going against the flow!

John Mason MSP Tuesday 4 February was a challenging day for me! After two and a half years of consultation, debate, and committee work we reached the final stage of the Bill introducing same sex marriage. It had been clear for some time that most MSPs in the Scottish Parliament were in favour of the Bill. However, I was convinced that constituents in the East End of Glasgow were much more evenly split on the subject. Some wanted me to support the change. But others had asked me to please try and protect the existing meaning of marriage.

So I want to say thank you. Firstly to all of you reading this who gave me your opinions in a calm and sensible way. Whether you asked me to vote for or against the Bill, I appreciate your getting in touch. And for those who have also sent me emails or letters since the vote thanking me for the stand I took - much appreciated. I am also grateful to the SNP for allowing MSPs on both sides to express their views and for giving me a fair bit of freedom to challenge the prevailing opinion. Although I do not agree with the decision Parliament made, it is a sign of a grown up parliament that we can debate such sensitive issues in a mature way.

The “Diversity” Exhibition At The Young Gallery, Creating A New Generation Of Artists By Michael McDaid

The Young Gallery on Sword Street saw the opening of the “Diversity” exhibition on Friday the 31st of January. The exhibition was created by primary five and six pupils from Garrowhill and St Benedicts primary school. The project was the brainchild of Liz Shepherd, the artist in residence at the Young Gallery. The concept behind the exhibition was that of street art and graffiti, with inspiration being taken from the artworks of American artists Roy Lichtenstein and Keith Haring alongside a selection of others. The idea came before the name, which was only decided upon after the children had begun their artistic endeavours Liz Shepherd told the Glasgow News “the name came about because the childrens work was very diverse, with many different colours and styles being created”.

Before the official unveiling the children had an opportunity to see their work in the gallery, Liz tells us how they reacted saying “The children were just so excited to see their work on the wall, and for some of them it was their first time visiting an art gallery”.

Liz also told the Glasgow News about how the teachers and parents have reacted to the exhibition. Liz told us how they were all “deeply impressed and happy to see the children so overjoyed” and gave them a “great sense of pride” in what the children had achieved. Liz also believes that the exhibition “brings something new to the community” especially at this time of year “when the weather can be quite grim”. Asking about how the local community has reacted the gallery and its work Liz told us how people “like the gallery being here and that it adds a bit of colour to the area” Liz hopes that as many of the local residents in the area as possible can come and enjoy the children’s work and “feel inspired”.

The “Diversity” exhibition at the “Young Gallery” ran from the 31st of January until the 14th of February. For information on further exhibitions and events go to their website at www.impactarts.co.uk.

Same Sex Marriage Bill Approved By Holyrood In Landslide Vote By Michael McDaid

On Tuesday the fourth of February the Scottish Parliament voted in a historic bill which gives people the right to same-sex marriage in Scotland with no limitations. MSPs voted by 105 to 18 in favour of the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Scotland) Bill. Thanks to the bill Scotland could see its first gay and lesbian marriages as early as October of this year. However Scotlands two main churches, The Church of Scotland and the Catholic Church were both opposed to the bill. To appease these concerns, religious organizations are participating on an “opt in” basis and as such cannot be

forced to perform same-sex marriages by law. With ministers stating “no part of the religious community would be forced to hold such ceremonies in churches.”.

Canada where it is legal to hold same-sex marriages. This will leave Northern Ireland as the only part of the UK which does not condone same-sex marriages.

The bill brings Scotland into line with 16 other countries which include England, Wales, France Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and

However critics of the bill have raised concerns that allowing samesex marriage could lead to those supporting a traditional definition of marriage being discriminated against. In response the Government insists that rights to free speech and expression shall be upheld and that those who did not want to solemnize a same-sex marriage would be protected from being accused of discrimination. The bill was pushed through to a parliamentary vote by a record breaking government consultation on the matter which received 77,508 responses from concerned citizens.

Cisco to Provide Free Cutting Edge Technology Training to Scottish Education Institutions

www.glasgow-news.com

Under the new agreement, Cisco will deliver online and hands-on-learning to students from Scottish secondary schools, colleges and universities, that have signed up to its Academy Programme. SQA will support the deployment of the Academy Programme in Scotland, by raising awareness of it through its established contacts with secondary schools, colleges and training providers. The agreement will also see Cisco and SQA working together to link the relevant elements of the Cisco Academy Programme with SQA qualifications. “The main focus for the Academy Programme is on extending access to learning, and helping improve the quality of instruction and technology available to education institutions,” said Donald McLaughlin, Country Manager for Scotland, Cisco. Alastair MacGregor, SQA’s Head of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Qualifications, said, “My team and I are looking

forward to working with Cisco to raise awareness of their Networking Academy Programme within Scotland’s schools. The memorandum we have signed with Cisco Systems is part of SQA’s Digital Media and ICT Vendor Alliance (DIVA). DIVA aims to expand and enrich computing science and digital media qualifications in Scotland, by fostering collaboration with the industry. DIVA members recognise the potential in SQA’s widely available qualifications, but understand that their own expertise can enrich these awards, giving learners a valuable insight into the skills and knowledge that is required to succeed in these industries.” The Cisco Networking Academy Programme was established in 1999 with the objective of providing programmes and facilities that promote the innovative use of technology in education. The Cisco Networking Academies aim to enhance their students’ career prospects, helping them to develop the knowledge and

skills required to succeed in a technologydriven market and fill the global demand for IT professionals. Since its launch the scheme has generated an estimated in-kind contribution of £46.3 million to UK education and inspired 170,000 students to pursue ICT careers. “New figures suggest there will be up to 900,000 ICT vacancies in Europe by 2015. It’s clear that technology skills are driving economic and employment growth, and it’s of vital importance to improve the image and attractiveness of ICT careers to the next generation,” said McLaughlin. “Our programme gives students real-world training and experience, not only helping them excel in their careers but also helping produce clear continuity from classroom to the workplace. We’re honoured to be helping SQA give the next generation of Scottish innovators and entrepreneurs the support and help needed to succeed in the workplace.”

On Thursday the 13th of February Cisco announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) to provide education institutions in Scotland with free of charge technology training and services.

But he then realises that other winners pose a similar threat in their own districts. Only previous victors can compete, which means Katniss’s ordeal has only just begun. Council tax frozen for

seventh year in row. Front-line services will continue to be protected in East Renfrewshire this year, despite the pressure on budgets. The pledge was made to residents by council leader Jim Fletcher on Thursday 13 February, after the council agreed plans to invest in education, health and social care, the environment and community safety, with £60 million capital investment planned over the next three years. At the full council meeting elected members approved a package of proposals totalling £21.3million for 2014/15, year two of the council’s two-year budget. A total of 70 per cent of the savings required for the multi-year budget were achieved through efficiencies, including a 37 per cent reduction in senior staff posts. The budget proposals will freeze council tax levels for local people for the seventh year, boost investment in the local

economy, support the delivery of new schools and increase the opportunities for more young and vulnerable children to access learning through nursery education and childcare places. In the face of challenging welfare reform, the council has also pledged to support families struggling to meet the cost of living. Councillor Fletcher said: “This budget has been founded on the principles of integrity and investment. Demographic changes and national policy have increased demands on our services but we have not allowed this to impact on our commitment to those who need our help most.” “We have protected our essential front-line services and are continuing a programme

of investment in capital projects, without making savage cuts elsewhere. It remains our goal to give all children early access to the best education and to close the learning gap between the highest achievers and the lowest. “Our commitment to enabling our elderly residents to live safe, secure and independent lives is unwavering. We will continue to ensure dignity and independence for local people living with disabilities. And our determination to support individuals and families struggling with growing financial hardship remains. “These are our minimum guarantees and the budget we have agreed here today will deliver this and more.” To ease pressure on the local household

purse, council tax will remain frozen for the seventh year (£1,126 band D), lower than the Scottish average of £1,149. Over £1 million of additional investment will also be directed at supporting vulnerable young children and the elderly through the council’s prevention work in early years and health and social care. Commitment to continuation of no compulsory redundancies was confirmed for council employees with a living wage increase to £7.65 for the lowest paid. The council also agreed a rent increase of five per cent. This increase is required to fund on-going improvements to our homes and to meet the Scottish Housing Quality Standard. The rent remains lower than local housing associations and

neighbouring local authorities. Commenting on the future financial forecast, Councillor Fletcher said: “Whilst we have addressed very difficult financial decisions, we all know that the global economic position remains a significant threat. The tough decisions are not over for this council or for local households. “Based on current information we can estimate a potential funding shortfall of around £25 million over the next three years. This is unprecedented and it will take bravery and cross-party collaboration to ensure everything possible is done to protect our essential front-line services.”

Colin and Justin launch new furniture recycling scheme Celebrity designers Colin and Justin today launched a new furniture recycling scheme to help tenants struggling to set up home.

Wheatley Housing Group has introduced the service to help people renting properties with its four social landlords – Glasgow Housing Association, Cube, Loretto and West Lothian Housing Partnership. The new Home Comforts service – which collects and up-cycles unwanted furniture and then distributes it to tenants in need was given a big thumbsup by TV stars Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan at the scheme’s Glasgow shop in Maryhill. The furniture is collected from abandoned flats and from staff across the Wheatley Group. A team of seven staff then clean or steam clean all items, test all the white goods and carry out minor repairs. Alan Popowicz (48) has already benefited from the service. Alan, a

British Army veteran with the Royal Signals Corp, had no furniture when he moved into a GHA home. He said: “Thanks to the Home Comforts service, I now have a sofa, a wardrobe, table and chest of drawers. It really helped me get started in my new home. When you haven’t got anything, anything you do get means so much.”

The team receives requests from tenants who need furniture but have no way of buying it. They look at the family composition as well as room size, age of the tenant and match them up with the most appropriate furniture. The scheme has already helped 160 tenants to furnish their new homes. A wide variety of furniture has been donated, including suites, beds, tables, chairs and cookers. Colin said: “‘To take discarded items, repair them, reinvent them and then give them to someone in need makes perfect sense to us, as the comforts of home are so important. This scheme helps tenants without a lot of money create homes

they can be proud of, and a good home is something we all should have access to.”

Justin added: “So please, support this great initiative, donate your unwanted items and make a difference to someone in your community.’ Jacqueline Norwood, Neighbourhood Services leader, said: “Some of our tenants have very little furniture when they move into their new home. Our Welfare Benefits Advisers and Housing Officers can refer customers to the scheme, to help them find the basics they need to get started.”Cookers and sofas are the most popular but we’re struggling to keep up with the demand for white goods.” Forrest Furnishings are also supporting the scheme. They are donating any pieces of furniture they pick up when delivering new furniture to their customers.

Buffalos are searching for new members The Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffalo’s (ROAB) or the BUFFS for short, is a benevolent organisation open to all males over 18 years of age. The organization raises money for local charitable causes and positive initiatives in the local area. The Buffallos East End branch was established in December of 2006 and has since raised over £20,000 through charitable projects, this is despite only having 8-12 members at each meeting. The organizations that the BUFFS have donated to include, local primary schools including Croftcroighn and St Aidens, the MacMillan Nurses and a wide selection of other good causes. The East End Buffalos are determined to raise even more this year and help even more people and organizations within Glasgow, however in order

to achieve this the group needs an increase in membership. The Buffalos are always looking for new members to join and help them help the local community and other good causes. If you are interested in joining the Buffalo’s, or want to find out more about the organisation, search for “RAOB Glasgow East” on Facebook. If your were previously in the RAOB and missing it, call or come along to a meeting on Monday evenings at 8pm at Shettleston Juniors clubhouse.

If you have a good cause and you would like to enlist the societies assistance, let us know about it through Facebook or phone the

societies secretary Philip Brannan on 07811329980.

Green Motoring:

No Longer An Oddity

The Geneva International Motor Show was the first international motor show to dedicate an exhibition area specifically for vehicles powered by alternatives to petrol and by renewable energies: The Green Pavilion which began in 2009. Today, all the large manufacturers have included these low emission vehicles in their product lines. As a result, beginning last year, these vehicles have re-joined the stands of their respective brands, as they are no longer oddities but have become part of their mainstream offerings.

that emit less than 95 grams of CO2 per kilometre will be listed in this publication. The threshold of 95 grams is lower in comparison with 2013. This figure corresponds to the average level of emissions that the European Union will impose on all new vehicles to be sold in 2021. Last year the threshold

was fixed at 100 grams of CO2 per kilometre. Around 10% of the 900 vehicles presented at that Geneva Motor show were already below that level. This year more than 65 models or 7.2% of all the models presented will already qualify for the average emissions criteria set for new vehicles in 6 years’ time.

Car Of The Year Award A Close Race CAMBUS MOT MOT TESTING STATION At The Geneva Motor Show For the third consecutive year, the Car of the Year will be announced just before the opening of the Press Days at the Geneva International Motor Show. The two institutions with long histories, the Geneva International Motor Show (more than 100 years) and the Car of the Year Committee (more than 50 years) will come together for this important event. This year the competition will be particularly intense and the 7 models on the final list will ensure a very difficult final selection for the jury. The election of the Car of the Year will take place for the third consecutive year within the framework of the Geneva International Motor Show. These two world renowned institutions, both

famous for presenting the technical evolutions of the automobile world, will come together again to provide more insights into the automobiles of the future. The Car of the Year Committee, composed of 58 automotive journalists from 22 countries, have already chosen their 7 favourites from the 30 new models launched on the market during the course of 2013 and having sold a minimum of 5,000 units during the year. These are: BMW i3, Citroen C4 Picasso, Mazda3, Mercedes S-Class, Peugeot 308, Skoda Octavia and Tesla Model S. The 7 finalists have been selected from the key segments of urban cars, family

vehicles and the more luxurious autos, based on the driving pleasure that they provide. The competition will be fierce and the final choice a very difficult one. They all bring a high level of comfort, value for money, and leading edge technology to the market. For example, for the first time there are two electric cars in the final list.

By Mid-February the members of the Jury will have the opportunity to undertake extensive tests of each model at the Automobile Research and Test Centre at Mortefontaine (CERAM France), enabling them to evaluate each model against their criteria of innovation, quality, value for money, and design.

The effects on the fragile state of health of the 45-year-old were unknown, the German newspaper ‘Bild’ reported yesterday. Schumacher’s spokeswoman Sabine Kehm told the newspaper: “We are not commenting on speculation.” Schumacher has been in a coma since his December 29 ski accident in the French Alps resort of Meribel when he badly injured his head, causing serious swelling of the brain.

The doctors treating him in the hospital in the French city of Grenoble two weeks ago said they were trying to coax him out of the coma by reducing his sedation. With little information being given

to media, the hospital has been left to fend off rumours. Last Thursday, it had to deny speculation flaring on social networks that Schumacher had died. It has been reported that Schumacher’s wife Corinna spends hours talking to

her husband at his bedside to try to help him round from his coma.

She has spoken to the seven-time world champion – who is being kept under anaesthetic at the University Hospital in France – every day without any response.

King Kenny! Scottish football legend Kenny Dalglish thrilled pupils at Netherlee Primary during a visit to the school.

Kenny received a warm welcome at the school, where he played a part in a fantastic afternoon of football. He was there to launch the Scottish Football Association’s 2014 Grassroots Awards, which recognises the work done by volunteers in community football.

Last year Giffnock Soccer Centre won the award for best community football club, so the SFA, and their partners McDonald’s and the Sunday Mail, visited East Renfrewshire for this year’s launch.

Netherlee was chosen to be involved after the wheels were put in motion by the council’s football development team. Primary six children enjoyed an afternoon session with centre coaches before the arrival of Kenny, where he met and chatted with youngsters.

He also attended a training session with around 100 children who attend the soccer centre at Muirend Playing Fields and met coaches and club officials.

Convener for community services and community safety, Councillor Mary Montague, said: “This was a tremendous boost for Netherlee Primary School they were so excited to be involved and to welcome Kenny Dalglish to the school.

The attacking player joins from Forfar Farmington where she spent the last two seasons in the SWPL. Glasgow City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black expressed his delight at capturing the youth international. He said, “It is unusual to sign such a talented player so late into the pre-season. However I am delighted we had the opportunity to add Abbi to our squad. I believe she is just the right type of player we are looking for. She has already shown in training this week that she will fit well into the philosophy of this club. Abbi has so many attributes that it is difficult to tie her down to one area of the pitch. She has great pace, is technically very good, very hard working and her range of passing is superb. Yet probably her biggest strength is the fact that she can play off either flank and combine play just as efficiently

levels. The camp will work on core rugby skills in a fun and relaxed way, which promotes enjoyment of the game.

Whitecraigs Rugby Club is holding its annual Easter Rugby Camp for P3-S2’s from the Tuesday 15th of April till Thursday the 17th of April. The camp is open to all abilities and experience

The camp costs £12 for the day or £30 for 3 days. The last few camps have been very successful so to avoid disappointment please contact Brandon Wamberg at Whitecraigs Rugby Club Development Officer for more information or to book a place at the camp.

“Along with our many community volunteers, our schools are committed to getting children involved in sport, as are the council’s team of football development officers who work closely with our local clubs.

“It was wonderful to have such a giant of Scottish football at the school – and here’s hoping for more success for local clubs and coaches in the 2014 Grassroots Awards this year.” Giffnock Soccer Centre is one of the biggest in the area and has grown from 600 to more than 900 in just over a year. It is run by more than 160 unpaid volunteers. They are one of many local clubs supported by the council’s football development team.

with either foot. I would like to wish Abbi the best of luck in this next phase of what looks to be a very promising career.”

Abbi herself commented, “I am very excited about joining Glasgow City for the season ahead. I am looking forward to playing along side top class players and working under new coaches. I believe that this was the right time for me to move as it will develop me further as a player. I feel very privileged to have been giving this opportunity and I’m looking forward to the new season getting under way. I would like to thank Forfar for the past 2 years for all the confidence they have given me and developing me as a player and person. I have made some great friends for life.” The capture of Abbi adds to the signature of Julia Scott, who joined City yesterday after previous spells in the SWPL and in England in the FA Women’s Super League.

Eagle Eye: The Ryder Cup Review

SPORT

Glasgow Speedway – the Fastest Family Fun in Town!

Welcome to my new column counting down to the 40th Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in September. It may be 7 months away but it is already the talk of clubhouses up and down the country.

The Captains: USA

Tom Watson: The PGA of America pulled off a masterstroke recruiting “Kansas Tam”, adored by Scottish fans everywhere. However the crowd may not be so partisan when the game’s biggest gentleman tees of for the USA.

Europe

Paul McGinley is the players choice. The likeable Irishman has never been on a losing team as a player or vice captain. McGinley is sure to leave no stone unturned in his preparation and definitely deserves the captaincy. It’s also hoped that he can bring out the best in the often streaky Rory McIlroy.

The Key Players: USA

The marmite of golf, Mr Eldrick Tont “Tiger” Woods, may just bring his game face in respect and admiration of his captain. Phil Mickelson will again be inspired by a youthful partner on Friday and Saturday so don’t be surprised to see a partnership with the highly rated 20 yr old rookie Jordan Speith. The big hitting Dustin Johnson and Bubba Watson can carry the ball further than most which will be a huge advantage.

Europe

As for the Europeans, expect the usual suspects of Poulter, Westwood, Rose, McIlroy and the resurgent Stenson. The short hitting Luke Donald needs a good start to the season. A recent change of coach has set him back a little and as such his form is a concern. To counteract the firepower of the Americans, Nicolas Colsaerts would boost the driving distance stats for Europe but like Donald , needs a good season.

The Course:

Is the Jack Nicklaus designed PGA Centenary layout the best course in Scotland? Absolutely not, but like Valhalla and Celtic Manor before it, it has been built as a “stadium course” for maximum spectator viewing. At 7088 yards it is the longest inland golf course in Scotland and if conditions are soft and the rain is coming down sideways the teams will have to play every yard of it.

Scot Watch:

Steven Gallacher had a perfect start to the 2014 season by successfully defending his desert crown in Dubai. His composure and patience that week will have impressed Captain McGinley, which may prove crucial in his chances for a place in the final 12.

Till next time, this is Eagle Eye signing off.

Preparation for another action packed season of top class motorcycle speedway racing is now well under way as the Glasgow Tigers prepare to challenge for Premier League honours once again. The Tigers who are based at the Ashfield Stadium in Springburn endured a dismal 2013 and have retained only two members of last season’s team in order to put forward a more competitive line up for the coming season. With Paisley’s James Grieves having hung up his boots at the end of a 23 year career, there are no Scots in the new look Tigers lineup, however the city will instead be represented by a team of international riders who will be sure to improve the Tigers standings this year in the Premier League of speedway racing. Competing across the length and breadth of the UK, the team hopes to capitalize on this new dynamic and make the Tigers a force to be reckoned with on the UK speedway circuit. Excitement is mounting amongst

the club’s supporters at the prospect of cheering on a new look team, which is sporting strong potential for league success when race action gets underway at the end of March. Leading the team will be German international Kevin Wolbert, who will be supported at the top end of the team by fan favourite, Theo Pijper of the Netherlands. Returning to the Tigers this season is the exciting young Anders Thomsen of Denmark who is competing with the Tigers for his second term, alongside Thomsen the team will have 3 Australian riders donning the Stripes for this season in the form of veteran rider Mark Lemon who will be accompanied by fellow countrymen Rusty Harrison and Joey Ringwood. The final rider joining the 2014 Tigers roster is the exciting 18 year old French ace Dimitri Berge who will make his British speedway debut with the Glasgow Tigers in the 2014 season. With much excitement, thrills and spills guaranteed on track at Ashfield, the club management is currently focusing on off track preparation and

is now actively looking to speak with businesses who may be interested in sponsorship and/or advertising. A club director commented: “Glasgow Speedway are the only form of professional motorsport in the City and the West of Scotland, we have supporters from all over the nation and are very much a family friendly sport. We are pretty unique in those respects and that offers any associated sponsors / advertisers many advantages in partnering with us. We would be delighted to hear from any companies who would be interested in discussing coming on board with us in 2014 and can assure them of our best attention and value for money at all times.” The Tigers season kicks off on the 28th of March ath 7:30pm with an air fence challenge against the Edinburgh Monarchs. More information about fixtures, events and the team can be found on their website at www. glasgowtigers.co

During televised home games, there are 28 separate headrests that can be viewed by the audience at home and because the club has a community minded ethos came up with a fantastic venture for charity.

Charities such as Breast Cancer Care in Scotland are there for everyone in their time of need, no matter what colour scarf they wear, when faced with the terror of cancer, everyone is equal, and everyone deserves the chance to fight back.

Each headrest will brand the logo of a local charity and Partick Thistle are asking for big hearted (and pocketed) companies and individuals to sponsor each seat, helping local charities in

The sponsorship lasts until the final day of next season and because of its success and popularity with fans is expected to continue onwards.
