Police have recovered a man’s body after he was seen falling from the Victoria Bridge near Glasgow Sheriff Court at around 9:10am on Thursday morning.
The as yet unidentified male was seen by onlookers to either jump or fall into the river during the early morning rush, which brought morning traffic to a near standstill. A passer by said that attempts to help the male in the river were to no avail as it appeared he refused any safety equipment aided to him in the river. A police helicopter was also seen hovering over the river and a boat was sent to assist with the search. Sadly police have said that a body was retrieved from the river a few
hours later at around 11.45am. The male recovered from the Clyde remains unidentified and police have said that enquiries are ongoing. The latest incident at the River Clyde comes less than a month after 30 year old Ross Ramsay’s body was recovered from the river on Monday 10th of March. Ross went missing on February 14 after CCTV seen him leaving the Gala Casino at around midnight after earlier spending time on a night out in the Ben Nevis pub in the city centre. By

The future of art taking shape at the Young Gallery Last week marked the opening of the Young Gallery on Sword Street’s latest exhibition, created by the primary 3 & 4 pupils of Dalmarnock and Quarybrae primaries. The children drew inspiration from the works of Damien Hirst and the grand master of abstract art, Pablo Picasso. The work was created over a series of eight workshops in which the children experimented with a range of different artistic methods and techniques.

A city centre pop up raises £500 for charity
A city centre pop-up shop, which was opened by a group of City of Glasgow College students, has raised an impressive £500 for the Helensburgh and Lomond Young Carers Initiative. The shop, which was located in the college’s Charles Oakley Building and opened last Thursday, sold a wide variety of goods designed by college students including clothing and jewellery. The P-OP SHOP, which was part of a partnership project involving students enrolled on the college’s NC
Advertising and Public Relations, NQ Fashion Merchandising and NQ Retailing courses, traded for two days and managed to attract custom from staff, students and members of the public. Shaun Patrick Murphy, who studies PR and Marketing at the college, said: “The P-OP SHOP was a fantastic event for all involved. Not only did we all gain work experience and knowledge of how to work in our chosen field, we were also able to draw positive attention and raise money for the Helensburgh and Lomond Young Carers Initiative.” By

Access to pension pots commences The new regulations on access to pension pots came into effect last week, with new pensioners now being allowed to withdraw anything up to a £30,000 lump sum from their pensions savings, up from £18,000.
This new withdrawal limit is a temporary measure before the regulations on pensions change to allow an unlimited amount of flexibility next April as set out in the budget which was released last month. Critics of the new scheme have raised concerns that the new deregulated pension fund system will allow some new retirees making the wrong decisions with their money. With some suggesting that some may spend the money they need to keep them in their old age on a holiday or other luxury purchase, leaving themselves destitute in the future. The government has hit back at these criticisms saying that those who have amassed considerable pension pots are those who have been historically good with their money and as such
there should be no concerns over reckless spending by new pensioners. Insurers have viewed the changes to the pensions systems with skepticism, as the new regulations also negate the need for pensioners to purchase annuities, which guarantees an annual pension income for the rest of their lives. The government is promising to put together a new money advice service for pensioners who are affected by the new regulations, however, it will not be in place for a further 12 months and as such new pensioners will need to seek advice from elsewhere in the mean time. Boxing promoter Barry Hughes in freedom bid The company which makes Scotland’s “other national drink” Irn Bru has year on year increased sales, and this year, improved sales by nearly ten percent. Currently, Scotland and Irn Bru, is the only country and soft drink that outsells Coca Cola anywhere in the world. As well as a yearly profit, AG Barr managed to lower debt from £25.6million pounds to a remarkable £2.1 million pounds. Shares over the last year also increased more than 10% percent and turnover also increased by 6.9% percent to £254.1million pounds, an improvement of nearly £17 million pounds.
The company, which produces and markets Irn Bru, Strathmore Water, Rockstar and Orangina as well as a variety of other drinks, sells drinks across the world and is currently one of Britain’s top performing companies. The Cumbernauld based firm is one of the main sponsors the Scottish Professional Football League and has done so for the last six years. Irn Bru has grown in popularity thanks to some of its memorable advertising campaigns and is one of the main sponsors of Glasgow’s 2014 Commonwealth Games. Chief Executive Roger White said of the excellent end of year results for his company “It has been another year of significant progress at A.G. BARR which has seen us outperform the
market and improve our conversion of sales into profit growth.” He continued, “the financial position of the AG Barr has grown stronger in the past twelve months and the platform for growth has been further reinforced by the performance of our brands, assets and people. The business has benefited hugely from the challenges of the past year, emerging stronger, fitter and more ambitious to develop. Despite remaining cautious regarding the environment we operate in and the challenges we face, we are confident in our future prospects.” By

Shamed boxing promoter Barry Hughes could be free from his 43 month prison sentence after launching an appeal against his prison sentence for mortgage fraud and money laundering offences. The 35 year old had admitted illegally obtaining cash and defrauding, by illegally obtaining £1.2 million pounds for two mortgages and also by using the money to purchase a Rolex watch. The boxing promoter, who previously managed ex world champion Scott Harrison, is seeking to be released pending the outcome. Hughes pleaded guilty last month following two and a half years of court proceedings after he admitted lying on mortgage applications abut his wife’s income.
The father of four claimed his 37 year old wife made £160,000 from her McDonald Interiors, but following the lodging of divorce papers in 2006 it was discovered that she was “financially dependent” on her husband. Procurator fiscal depute Bernard Ablett told the court during the trial that “the lenders state that they would not have approved the loan request if they had known the income details were false.” An appeal court judge will decide next week whether to grant Hughes’ release.

Councillors from East Renfrewshire Council have given the go ahead for the creation of a new family centre to be built in Barrhead. After extensive consultation with the local community, the new centre was given unanimous backing and Covener for education and equalities Councillor Elaine Green said, “This will be a fantastic centre that will be of enormous benefit to our youngest residents.” The new Arthurlie Family Centre as it will be known will replace the current Arthurlie Family Centre, which faces closure, although the future of the building is still to be finalised. The family centre which will incorporate front line staff from other council services, and partner organisations, such as health visitors and social workers to host important services in the heart of the community. Govanhill branch of Clydesdale Bank set to shut down Customers who use the Govanhill branch of the Clydesdale Bank were outraged today when it was announced that their local branch was to be shut down for good. 28 UK wide branches will shut down after owners National Australia Bank said it aims to save £5million pounds thanks to the closure of the banks but promised to save frontline jobs. A spokesman for Clydesdale Bank said that the sixteen branches to be closed were unsustainable but the company promised to invest £45 million pounds in customer improvements, under plans to reshape their retail banking operations. Six flagship branches will be developed as well as an improved mobile and internet banking service that promises to “replace, renew, relocate and reinvest” across the Clydesdale Bank network. Three of the new branches will be in Scotland, in Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh and the improvements
in the flagship stores will allow an increase in jobs at each Clydesdale Bank branch. David Thorburn, chief executive of Clydesdale Bank and Yorkshire Bank said “There’s a lot of positive change being driven forward for our customers and there needs to be more as we build a better bank. Here we are making a significant investment to meet the changing needs of customers now and in the future.” Although Clydesdale Bank promises to improve services the relocation and removal of the bank in Govanhill will directly effect the people who depend on their local bank, especially the elderly, who will struggle to adapt to online banking and will find it difficult to make the journey to the new branch. Fraser Sutherland, consumer spokesman for Citizens Advice
Scotland, described the distances some people would have to travel to access their bank as “very worrying”, particularly as many isolated areas had poor public transport links. “So many people are struggling with their finances at the moment that easy access to bank accounts is really important. For them, these closures will not just be a minor inconvenience but a real problem,” he said. Rob Macgregor, national officer of Unite union said “The bank is cutting costs and eroding community banking which we believe leaves customers with less choice.” He continued “Customers are being short changed by high street banks replacing counter staff with machines, yet, according to our own poll, nearly three-quarters of people want the human touch, not just a machine in their local bank branch.”
With the banking industry aiming toward a larger digital presence large banks such as National Australia Bank need to be moving forward and smaller, rural, less lucrative banks will face closure, whilst banks in major cities will be given higher priority. David Thorburn, chief executive of Clydesdale Bank and Yorkshire Bank, said: “There’s a lot of positive change being driven forward for our customers and there needs to be more as we build a better bank. “Here we are making a significant investment to meet the changing needs
of customers now and in the future. “But to deliver what are fundamentally necessary changes, we have to face difficult decisions. No branch closure is welcomed by customers or staff, I understand that, which is why we are working to minimise the effects these changes have on them. “Our resources must now be focused on where they can deliver the best results for customers, moving with them as their demands change.” By

Celtic Park set to host opening ceremony on 100m-wide screen. Celtic Park is set to host the opening of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games on one of the largest screens in Europe. The digital screen which is rumoured to be the largest of its kind in Europe has a surface dimension of 1,020 sq m. Celtic Park’s entire south stand will be consumed by the digital screen. Full details of the ceremony have yet to be released but it is sure to highlight Glasgow in all her glory, and possibly sporting heroes of the past and present as well.
Head of ceremonies David Zolkwer said “The building of a screen of this scale, running the entire length of Celtic Park’s south stand, is going to add a really audacious dimension to Glasgow 2014’s opening ceremony. “Both through sheer spectacle and as a wonderful story-telling device, our goal is for the screen to be a wow factor, a fantastic augmentation to the story we are telling our live audience in the stadium and the many hundreds of millions of people watching on television around the world.” By

£500,000 training facility Prostate Cancer Battle opened in Rouken Glen Park An exciting new £500,000 training academy for young people has been officially opened in Rouken Glen Park. The Young Enterprise Scotland Academy is run by Young Enterprise Scotland on behalf of East Renfrewshire Council.
Margaret Curran MP, for Glasgow East, has backed Prostate Cancer UK’s ‘Men United v Prostate Cancer’ campaign, which uses the language of sport to engage men in the battle against the disease. Ms Curran signed up after meeting with Prostate Cancer UK staff at the Scottish Labour Party’s spring conference in Perth Margaret said: Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and is predicted to be the most common cancer overall by 2030. Despite this we know that the quality of care and support men with the condition receive varies throughout Scotland. That is why Prostate Cancer UK is calling for NHS Boards to implement its award winning Quality Checklist. The fight against Prostate Cancer is a big one but, working together, I know we can win it.” Joining Margaret in backing Men United v Prostate Cancer is Scottish football legend Denis Law, chat-
show king Sir Michael Parkinson and comic icon Bill Bailey. Prostate Cancer UK charity partner Scotmid Co-operative, which recently smashed its £150,000 annual fundraising target for the charity within just six months, is also backing the campaign via a series of events at its stores throughout Scotland. Drew Lindon, Head of Policy & Campaigns at Prostate Cancer UK, said:”Prostate cancer survival rates are below the European average, research into the disease lags a decade behind that of other cancers, and quality of care and support varies depending on where you live. Men United is a powerful way for men, and the women in their lives, to mobilise against the common enemy of prostate cancer. By signing up, Margaret Curran MP has a place and a voice in a growing movement that’s taking action for men’s health. We are extremely grateful for her ongoing support, and would encourage people throughout Scotland to join Men United to help boot prostate cancer into row Z.”

Farewell to Tony Benn
Last week crowds gathered at Westminster to say farewell to Labour minister and left wing activist Tony Benn. As a mark of respect the Queen granted permission for Mr Benn’s body to be held in state in Westminsters chapel before the funeral. Mr Benn was buried at the nearby St Margarets church, with thousands of mourners paying their respects from outside the church. Commons Speaker John Bercow said of Mr Benn’s career: “Tony Benn’s time as an MP spanned more than 50 years and he is one of only two MPs to be awarded the freedom of the House in recognition of his very long and distinguished service as an MP. It is this almost unique distinction which forms the basis for Tony Benn to be accorded the privilege to ‘rest’ in the chapel on the eve of his funeral.” By

Rangers announce loss Win a Meal of £3.5million pounds for Two at... Rangers have posted losses of £3.5million pounds and the men in charge have blamed the financial uncertainty on fans threatening to withhold season ticket money as one of the underlying causes

The 3.5million loss does show signs of Rangers finances improving as the loss has been more than halved since the seven month period to the end of the year. A new retail deal with Sports Direct also helped the Ibrox finances lower their debt, however staff costs still remain high at £7.5 million pounds. The financial results follow swiftly on the back of would be investor and former Rangers Director Dave King. King suggested supporters put season ticket money into a trust fund until the board provide definitive answers on the long term future of the club. Rangers chairman David Somers said the proposed withholding of season ticket money had caused “material uncertainty”. Supporters, though, will
press ahead with their plans to set up a trust fund for the season ticket renewal money.
Rangers securing two loans totalling £1.5m, fans could be thinking otherwise.
“We are certain that not a single one of the 6,500 fans, and counting, who have so far shown interest in the idea of a season ticket trust have any wish to withhold any money from the club,” said a statement from the Union of Fans, a coalition of supporters groups.
Rangers’ interim accounts show that, in December, about £1.7m of their £3.5m cash reserves related to money that is “not immediately available as working capital”.
At the AGM in December chief executive Graham Wallace claimed that there was “sufficient cash in the business to fund the ongoing needs of the club in the near term however with
“We note interim results which show a drop in revenue excluding the Sports Direct deal, a failure to address operating costs during the period to December 2013 and doubts over the cash position of the club going forward,” said the Union of Fans.

Rabbit tied up in bin bag
URRY ON THE HILL
INDIAN CUISINE Restaurant & Lounge
Serving the finest Indian & European cuisine prepared using fresh, locally sourced ingredients The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after a rabbit was dumped in a bin bag at a bus stop in Glasgow. Scotland’s animal welfare charity was alerted at 4.30pm on Monday (24 March) when a member of the public found the bunny on Castlemilk Drive and handed her into a nearby police station. The white and brown female rabbit, who is estimated to be between six and eight months old, is now in the care of the Scottish SPCA’s Glasgow Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre where she has been named Pip. Animal Rescue Officer Stephanie McCrossan said, “Pip was dumped in a cat carrier which
had been tied up in a black bin bag. This was extremely cruel and could have led to Pip suffocating or beingmistaken for rubbish. The cat carrier, which had a bowl of food inside and a water bottle attached, was filthy and covered in faeces. This is a very concerning incident and we are keen to trace the person responsible. If anyone recognises Pip and knows who owned her we would urge them to contact us. Pip was understandably stressed when she was found but is in good overall condition and we’ll soon find her the loving home she deserves.” Anyone with information is being urged to contact the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.

Tel: 0141 778 8335 Protect your pet from pesky parasites! The warmer months are peak season for pesky parasites like fleas and ticks. Fleas are a major source of irritation to pets and owners alike. They feed on the animal’s blood and multiply rapidly to cause an infestation. As well as being found on your pet they will live in the carpets and bedding at home. Fleas are responsible for transmitting tapeworms in pets so worming your pet if you find fleas is also advisable. Ticks are found mainly in woodland areas or on the hills and moor land but can be found in areas of long grass, especially if deer or hedgehogs are in the area. Ticks also feed on your pets’ blood and can cause serious diseases such as Lyme’s disease as well as a reaction to the bite itself. It is important never to pull a tick from your pet’s body. This can result in the tick’s head being left in the skin, causing infection, pain and irritation. Tick removers are available to ensure safe and complete removal.
Angiostrongylus vasorum (also known as French Heartworm) is a parasite that infects dogs. The adult worms live in the heart and large blood vessels supplying the lungs and can cause a whole host of problems in affected animals and if left untreated it can be fatal. The lungworm parasite is carried by slugs and snails, which are often eaten by dogs on purpose or accidentally when attached to toys or grass or in outdoor water bowls. Symptoms range from breathing problems, blood clotting problems, general weakness and depression and even sudden collapse and death. Infection can be prevented by using a specific spot on preparation, available from your vet.
Lungworm is another parasite that is becoming increasingly common. The lungworm

Your common questions about pets answered by Vet Kirsteen from Vets4Pets in Newton Mearns Q. Should my cat and dog be vaccinated?
A. Yes; there are lots of nasty diseases out there your pets can catch. Some can cause pain, distress and may even be fatal. Vaccinations are the best way to safeguard your pet and to also prevent diseases from being passed on to other animals. We have a Healthcare Plan called Vac4Life. For just £99 we can provide free booster vaccinations and health checks for life.
Q. Fleas don’t exist in the winter so I don’t apply flea treatment. Is this right?
A. Unfortunately fleas are a problem all year round, especially in the winter due to the increased use of central heating. It is very important to use a monthly treatment all year round. We would advise you use a product which helps combat not only fleas but other parasites as well.
The best way to check for fleas is to check for ‘flea dirt’. This is brown or black specks seen in the pet’s fur – these are specks of blood extracted by the flea. The best way to check for flea dirt is to comb through your dog’s coat onto a wet piece of kitchen roll or paper. If the specks turn red or brown, then you know your dog has fleas. Ask us about the Bug Pack – this gives you 12 months of flea and worm protection for the price of 9!
Q. Are there any rules and regulations to consider when travelling aboard with my pet?
A. Yes, new rules came into effect in the UK in 2012. They essentially mean that dogs and cats travelling between the UK and an EU or ‘listed’ third countries from 2012 must: • Be microchipped • Be vaccinated against rabies • Have waited 21 days after vaccination before entering the UK, EU or listed third country • Have an EU Pet Passport • Have treatment for tapeworm 1-5 days before re-entering the UK
We can help with all of these queries to ensure you get everything right. We offer a Pre-travel Consultation. Your vet will discuss how you can protect the health and welfare of your pets when travelling abroad and we can answer any questions relating to the new rules and general pet health when abroad. Happy travels!
If you have any more questions for Kirsteen, or just want to know more about any of the above, please feel free call the surgery, we’d be glad to help: 0141 639 3636. Or, you are welcome to pop-in and see us at Vets4Pets Newton Mearns, Greenlaw Village, Newton Mearns, Glasgow, G77 6GR

Clean Up Scotland? Clean Up Scotland is an environmental charity, with the Keep Scotland Beautiful engagement campaign – which continues to work to make Scotland and its cities the cleanest in Europe.
A national coalition is being assembled for action to challenge our individual relationships with litter. Community Clean Up activities will be arranged to tackle the carelessness and illegal behaviour of those individuals who damage our quality of life and tarnish the our cities and country’s image. We are working to change longterm behaviour by making dropping litter as socially unacceptable as drink driving is today.
Why now?
The eyes of the world are on Scotland as never before. In 2013, the Year of Natural Scotland encouraged domestic and foreign visitors to enjoy Scotland at its best. Now, in 2014, Scotland will play host to The Homecoming and two of the biggest sporting events in the world - The Commonwealth Games and The Ryder Cup.
Why it’s important
As you know, deliberate fire setting is a drain on local resources and has the potential to cause injuries and put lives and property at risk. They also impact those staying in local communities causing fear and alarm to residents and family pets in addition to having a detrimental effect on the local area and the wider environment.
You might also want to think about; • Organising your own clean up event with the help of Clean Up Scotland (visit our website to download our Clean Up information pack and register your event with us to receive a free Clean Up Kit) • Signing up your organisation to the Clean Up Scotland group pledge

JOIN SCOTLAND’S
FIGHT AGAINST FIRE Keep Your Neighbourhood Tidy Members of the public are being asked to ‘Join Scotland’s Fight Against Fire’ with the call to action that ‘fire setting is an offence, don’t accept it, report it’. During Spring and Easter carelessness or reckless behaviour whether in rural or urban areas, is the cause of numerous outdoor fires which can overstretch local fire and rescue service resources, putting people, businesses, properties and environment at severe risk.
SFRS are therefore asking communities, tourists and visitors accessing cities and the countryside for sport or recreation, along with landowners, farmers etc to be aware of the heightened risk of fire at this time of year and are advising them to act safely and responsibly.

A happy couple from Baillieston says their relationship is stronger than ever after losing a combined weight of 14st 11lbs and winning a local slimming competition. Mike and Angela have transformed their lives since joining the Baillieston Slimming World group and now they’re delighted to have been named as Baillieston’s representatives in the organisation’s Couple of the Year 2014 contest. The pair, who have been married for years, decided to join Slimming World after realising that their weight was making them unhappy and putting their health at risk. Angela says: “I think it’s easy for couples to become comfortable with one another and over time daily family life takes priority over your weight and health. Convenience foods are so tempting when you’re busy and we’d regularly treat ourselves to a takeaway. So like most people our weight crept up gradually. But in 2012 we realised we didn’t recognise the people we saw in the mirror anymore and we knew it was telling on our health, that was

when we decided we had to do something.”
The couple lost 14st 11lbs in 18 months, Mike having lost 4st and Angela dropping 10st 11lbs by following Slimming World’s Food Optimising healthy eating plan. The plan encourages slimmers to satisfy their appetite with ‘Free Foods’, foods that are filling but low in calories and fat, like fruit and veg, pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat, fish and eggs, while still enjoying small amounts of the foods that most diets forbid like chocolate, crisps and alcohol, so it’s possible to lose weight without ever feeling hungry or deprived. Angela says: “I expected losing weight to be hard work but it hasn’t been at all. We still enjoy all of our favourite meals like roast dinners, curries and stir fries, but we’ve learned how to make small changes to the way we cook them so they’re much healthier – and they taste better too! It’s never felt like being ‘on a diet’ – and we’re confident that there’s no going back to the way we were. We both feel great and I definitely feel like I’ve

Royal Mail staff expected to strike after jobs blow Five months after the Government privatised the 498 year old Royal Mail, the company has announced it is to cut 1600 staff in a move that aims to save the company £50million pounds Postal unions have reacted angrily to the proposal and the prospect of industrial action seems more and more likely. Unions also believe that there will be more job cuts to follow the initial 1600. With these line of job cuts, it brings the total job losses in Royal Mail to 50,000 in little over a decade. The union representing Royal Mail workers Unite said in a statement “We are demanding a commitment to no compulsory redundancies on fair terms and an effective method for redeployment within the restructured organisation. If Royal Mail refuse we will have no alternative than to consider a ballot for industrial action,”
The company which currently employs almost 150,000 employees, reassured people that the job losses would not interfere with day to day services, and no postmen or postwoman would lose there jobs in the shake up. Following the job cut statement Royal Mail shares dropped in the FTSE 100 by 1.5% percent to 575p. Critics also claim that the privatisation was bungled and vastly underpriced to benefit investors, some say the company was underpriced at nearly £3.3 billion pounds. Goldman Sachs bought £250 million pounds worth of stocks, increasing the wealth of their already extremely wealthy clients. Ex Conservative Prime Minister John Major and his Bow Group think tank called the privatisation, “shambolic” and a “short sighted fire-sale” which robbed the taxpayer of a “valuable national asset”. Malaysian authorities confirm MH370 crashed in Indian Ocean Last week Malaysian authorities confirmed that missing flight MH370 crashed into the Southern Indian Ocean, citing newly analysed data from a satellite which was tracking the flight after it lost contact with the ground.

Danish zoo kills family of lions The Copenhagen zoo in Denmark which put down a healthy giraffe earlier this year as it was not in line with international breeding policies has last week killed a family of lions in order to make room for a new young male lion The Copenhagen zoo claims that it “had to euthanize” the family of lions which included two cubs and two adults as it could not find new homes for them elsewhere. The zoo in response to media pressure claimed that the two adults who were aged 16 and 14 years were nearing the end of their lifespans in captivity. An Egyptian court has sentenced 528 supporters of deposed Islamic Brotherhood President Mohammed Morsi to death in a special hearing.
The condemned were convicted of a long list of charges which include murdering a member of the police force and attacks on people and property. In total around 1,200 members of the Muslim Brotherhood are on trial, including members of the movements high command. The Egyptian government has also last week announced another series of mass trials for a further 919 suspected
Islamists under different charges.
Since the military deposed the Islamist government in July of last year, the authorities have taken a harsh stance against supporters of Mr Morsi’s government and on a number of occasions, resorted to the use of deadly force to disperse protests and riots by Muslim Brotherhood supporters.
The mass death sentences which have been handed down have been decried by the international community, with the UN human rights commissioner Navi Pillay stating that the verdicts “breached international human rights laws” It is believed that the condemnation
of so many Brotherhood supporters is the Egyptian governments method of retaliation against a string of shootings, suicide bombings and kidnaps which have rocked Cairo since July of last year.
These death sentences have been followed by the resignation of the chief of Egypts military Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, who says he intends to run for the presidency in the next elections. Many in Egypt and the international community fear that this may be a return to the military dictatorship which was overthrown by the Muslim Brotherhood. By

In a bizarre turn of events, male North Korean university students are to now required to sport the same haircut as the country’s dictator leader Kim Jong-un. Ukrainian troops pull out of Crimea, US & EU consider further sanctions Last week, the heavily outnumbered Ukrainian troops in the now Russian held Crimea were ordered to withdraw by Ukrainian interim President, Olexander Turchynov. President Turchynov cited that the reason for the withdrawal was due to “Russian threats to the lives of military staff and their families”.
This announcement came shortly after Russian forces seized a naval base at Feodosia, one of the last major Ukrainian assets in the region, thus removing any threat of Ukrainian military retaliation from the region. Ukrainian

emotional
goodbyes to friends and relatives who remain in the region as they were reassigned to bases in the Ukrainian mainland. IRA claims to have “new batch” of Semtex
Dissident republicans in Northern Ireland are claiming to have acquired a new batch of semtex, which they claim was used in an attack on a Police Service Northern Ireland (PSNI) Land Rover in Belfast last week.
The PSNI have been unable to verify the claims made by the IRA, however, if the explosives used were part of a new batch, it is extremely worrying for the PSNI. As it would show that dissidents have acquired new sources of armament. It is believed
that previous explosives which have been used in attacks in recent years were from stockpiles built up under the Provisional IRA, which disbanded after the Good Friday Agreement. The group currently calling itself the IRA was created after the splinter groups The Real IRA and the Republican Action Against Drugs (RAAD), who disagreed with the Good Friday Agreement joined forces in early 2013 and began a new campaign of violence in the North. NATIONAL NEWS Co-operative Bank needs to raise £400 million to pay for mistakes
The Co-operative bank needs to raise a further £400 million in order to cover the cost of past misconduct, this latest news deals fresh damages to the bank which promotes its ethical approach to lending and banking, coming soon after a funding shortfall and a drugs scandal involving former chairman Paul Flowers. The bank was managed by the Cooperative Group, Britain’s largest mutually owned company until last year when government financial regulators identified that the bank had a £1.5 billion capital deficit. This lead to an emergency refinancing plan which reorganised the banks ownership structure and passed the
control to a group of privately owned hedge funds. This latest crisis comes after an internal review showed that it needed to set aside roughly £400 million in order to meet costs related to historic misconduct at the bank. This money is to be set aside to pay compensation for mis sold PPI, breaches of credit rules and to repay customers who were over charged on their mortgages. “The result of providing for these items, together with the cost of separation from the Co-operative Group, is that the starting capital position of the bank for the four- to five-year recovery period is weaker than in the plan announced last year,” Chief Executive Niall Booker said. Convicted drug dealer loses £198m pound appeal
Convicted drug dealer Curtis Warren has lost his appeal against courts confiscating £198million pounds of money.
In 2009, 50 year old Warren was sentenced to 13 years after trying to import cannabis into Jersey and in November last year he was warned by a judge he faced a further 10 years in jail if he did not pay £198 million pounds. Warren who allegedly ran a £300million pound drug empire from his prison cell and has spent the better part of the last seventeen years in jail, at one point has shares in an African gold mining venture, Swiss bank accounts and appeared in the Sunday Times Rich List. The drug baron who has an estimated £300million pound fortune failed to change the Jersey Court Of Appeal’s ruling and was warned that extra jail time would follow if he did not submit the money.
Scottish Government gives go ahead for Big six energy giants to face worlds third largest offshore wind farm competition inquiry By
The Scottish Government has given its approval for the creation of the worlds third largest offshore wind farm at the Outer Moray Firth, the project which is a joint venture between Moray Offshore Renewables Limited and Beatrice Offshore Windfarm Limited, will be made up of 326 turbines. The project is predicted to generate enough electricity to power over one million homes and business’ once completed. During construction the wind farm is set to create work for up to 4,600 people and the scheme as a whole during the initial construction will be worth around 2.5 billion pounds to the Scottish Economy. Energy Minister Fergus Ewing said: “Scotland has the potential to lead the development of an exciting, new renewables industry as offshore wind moves into deeper waters. Offshore renewables represent a huge opportunity for Scotland, an
opportunity to build up new industries and to deliver on our ambitious renewable energy and carbon reduction targets.”
has welcomed the announcement, with the organization’s Chief Climate and Energy Policy officer, Gina Hanrahan stating:
Some wildlife groups have criticised the move, with the RSPB stating: “It is disappointing Scottish Ministers have decided to take such a risk with Scotland’s internationally important populations of seabirds”
“Climate change is the biggest threat facing our oceans and seas globally, and is already impacting on Scotland’s marine environment. It is therefore vital that we find ways to harness the clean energy that marine renewables, such as offshore wind, can provide.”

It was announced by regulator Ofgem last week that the six largest energy firms are to face a competition inquiry, in response to claims that the firms are setting prices together in order to artificially keep bills high for consumers. The big six - SSE, Scottish Power, Centrica, RWE Npower, E.On and EDF Energy - account for about 95% of the UK’s energy supply market. The Ofgem report which was released on the 27th of March has found that there is “possible tacit coordination” among the firms on the matters of price rises, as all of the providers raise their prices by similar amounts and at similar times, despite open market prices for wholesale energy having fallen.
Brendan Doherty
However the report does not go as far as accusing the big six of colluding over prices and manipulating the market, with Dermot Nolan of Ofgem stating that there was “no evidence of a cartel, but [there is] extremely weak competition” Mr Nolan has also said that the “investigation will take some time” but that in the interim, Ofgem would be “keeping up the pressure” on the big six This inquiry comes after energy provider SSE announced last week that it would be freezing it’s current prices until 2016, which has widely been considered a move to court the Labour party ahead of the elections next year as the Labour party promises to freeze energy prices in the event of them being elected.

wage. One of the big mistakes of Labour and Tory governments at Westminster has been failing to make work pay. The living wage is all very well and I support it. But it is voluntary. Two main things need to happen: people should always be better off working than on benefits; and the statutory minimum wage must be enough to live on.

John Mason MSP Six months to go to the referendum! Everywhere I go people are talking about it. On the doors in the East End, at a public meeting in Garrowhill, at Eastbank Academy, and at debates in Stirling and Abwerdeen. And what will a Yes vote in September mean? For starters we will get rid of nuclear weapons and abolish the bedroom tax. There are unlikely to be many Tory governments in an independent Scotland. What we hope to build is a fairer more equal society. Under both Tory and Labour governments at Westminster the gap between rich and poor has got wider and wider. And under both London parties big international companies have not paid the taxes they should have.

One of the key areas we need to have control of in Scotland is the welfare and benefits system. And linked to that is the statutory minimum
So what does a No vote mean for Scotland? We do not know! Many folk had thought Labour would come up with a serious plan. But instead they only said that Scotland would control 26% of taxes rather than 22%. So a No vote means just tinkering round the edges. In 1979 many people including myself voted No as we were promised something better. But the promise was broken and we realised we had made a mistake trusting Westminster. I hope we will not make the same mistake again.

Recent figures released by All Media Scotland, paint a stark picture for paid for titles in the print industry. With paid for titles on average losing twenty percent of their readership per year. In monetary terms that’s nearly a fifth of all revenue down the proverbial drain. Bucking the trend however, is free for titles which includes this fine established newspaper, The Glasgow News, with advertising revenue on the increase and readership at an all time high, the demise of the print industry especially local news, seems a touch premature. Some of the largest paid for titles are haemorrhaging money at the minute, From Trinity Mirror laying off journalists and sales team employees, Evening Times laying off staff and budgets being slashed across the board. Many say that it was the industries failure to evolve with the progression of technology and failing to see the potential of the internet. Sadly it was an almost smug, snobbish, belief that society would
only ever read news if a journalist had written it. People want news and they want it now. In our fast moving and disposable society people don’t want to wait until the following day to find out breaking news that happened the previous day. It could be said that the powers at be or the “big beasts” in charge of the newspapers, refused to take heed because people had been writing off the print industry since the creation of commercial radio, terrestrial television, and finally subscription television. Each time, newspapers took a few blows but came out relatively unscathed. But the internet revolutionised everything, music, news, television, the ability to connect with each other, and rather than think of ways that
this new invention could promote the industry, they decided to deny. Slowly it grew, consuming the industries that failed to adapt, and threatened the very lifeblood of the newspaper industry itself, readership. The question the new generation of readers asked was, Why pay for news that lags a day behind? When you can go online and get current news instantly. “Times they are a changing”, so said Bob Dylan and with the power of the internet and an easier access to infinite knowledge across the web, through home computers and mobile phones, citizen journalism was born. People talking to people, the industry stood up and took notice. Citizen journalism, blogs, online forums, people had the ability to learn
about everything and write about everything, breaking news became a video recorded on someone’s phone, everybody remembers the horrors of September 11th nearly all of the
video’s were taken by the average citizen who just happened to be there at the site. Citizen Journalism has proved time and time again that it can be productive, the man on the ground,

According to AllMediaScotland.com newspaper readership is almost universally down. Except local news is quietly bucking the trend and many titles are actually increasing in readership especially free titles like the Glasgow News. Daily Record – 9.7% drop The Scottish Sun – 9.8% drop Sunday Mail – 9.9% down Evening Times- 15.9% down Irvine Times – 2,677, up 3.1% Annandale Herald & Moffat News – 3,560, up 31.4% Glasgow News and Ayrshire News (Free) full online newspaper and readership upwards of 100,000
the first man over the trench. The internet provided the platform for people to supply the news and pictures because it is impossible for a journalist to be everywhere at any given time, whereas the general public can be and are everywhere. Now, with breaking news a 24 hour event, society has a bigger role to play in the concept of news and news gathering, but the journalism industry is slowly understanding its place. The age of the industry surviving solely as a print based entity is gone. People have respect for the average journalist, they guy in war zones, the guy fighting to uncover corruption, the guy fighting for the average man. It could be said that with the phone hacking scandal, people lost faith in the industry, but the phone hacking
scandal was purported by less than 1%percent of the entire profession and even then, without phone hacking, and underhand tactics, there would have been no expense scandal, no Jimmy Saville enquiry, every politician that has ever fallen would have been safe if not for underhand tactics to pursue a person who believes they are untouchable. As far back as the Watergate Scandal in the 70’s. If the end justifies the means is is not a necessary evil? If phone hacking helps stop a terrorist attack(which it has) or helps save someone’s life, is it acceptable? That is why journalists and the industry will always have a place in the world. And that is why local news will always be the strong beating heart in the centre of the community.
People want local news from their local area, they want to be able to go online and check out stories that involve their local surroundings. Or stories from the area where their granny or their sister stays, people want to be able to put a picture to the story, or to be able to show their friends their kids school in the newspaper. Events that are actively affecting them, the closure of a school, crime levels, drug levels, politicians fighting for the local area, local employment, housing, benefits, stories that effect the day to day living of people in their local area. Local news give people the ability to connect with their area. It gives people a sense of community pride, and that is why Glasgow News,
a free local paper with international stories, entertainment stories, music stories and political stories are essential, but more importantly a strong focus on local stories, a healthy and functioning social media platform to connect with the community, and the ability for the readers to grab the latest edition online is equally as essential. That is the reason although parts of the industry are in a state of convergence, we don’t see progression or evolution as a bad thing.
The need for up to date local news will never fade, it’s as much a part of the fabric of the community as the local chippy, and we intend to stay that way.

A look back into Shettleston’s history Shettleston’s new community heritage trail project is well underway.
The cultural heritage workshops are being run by Northlight Heritage, and have begun by collaborating with local schools, the Fuse Youth Café, Edrom Path sheltered housing, the Shettleston History Project and a group of enthusiastic community members.
The aim is to showcase the heritage of Shettleston during the Commonwealth Games with a trail leaflet and mobile phone app. The first order of business before the project gets into full swing is selecting where the new heritage trail will lead. Over seventy people attended the launch event at Fuse youth café last month and now the team are looking for help in finding more material for the trail.
Project manager for Fuse, Gerry Baldwin said “We have been very fortunate that people have started to hand in old photos, memorabilia and stories, however we’d love to have more. If you know anyone who has any information or materials relating to Shettleston’s past, we’d be very grateful if you got in touch. You can also hand materials in to Fuse Youth Café. Don’t worry you’ll get them back!” So far items of note have included a set of “demob” papers from World War One, which belonged to a local residents
Grandfather, this is complemented by a selection of photographs from times gone by, depicting people who worked on the trams, at the iron works and went to the steamie every week to do their washing. The project has also recieved a lot of material from the Shettleston Juniors football club, including a club minute book dating back to the 1930’s This project is uncovering the working class heroes of yesteryear, and giving the younger generation a window into the past, so that they may appreciate the world around them. There are also spaces left on the adult workshops, which take place on Thursday evenings at Shettleston Old Parish Church on Killin Street. The next workshop is on Thursday the 3rd of April. The group will be travelling
to the Mitchell Library, to learn about what the Glasgow City archives have to offer for the project and how they can help us look back in time to a different era in Shettleston’s history. There will be a further six workshop sessions after this one, with the project culminating with a “selection event” at the end of May where the people of Shettleston will pick the points to be featured on the heritage trail. Booking is essential. Please contact Katy Firth on 07908211619 or email kfirth@yorkat.co.uk
You can also keep up to date with the project by checking out the initiatives website at: www. walkingbacktothefuture.weebly.com or search for them on Twitter with ShettlestonWB2F.
City Centre 20 miles an hour speed limit
Seven years after Glasgow City Council first put forward the proposal it has been decided that parts of Glasgow City Centre will have a speed restriction imposed on it. The new restrictions are to help improve life for shoppers as the council aim to make it easier for the public to reach the area by foot, bike, or public transport. Glasgow City Council has issued a new transport plan that is going out for public consultation. As of this time no particular streets have been named in the report however, Renfield Street and Oswald Street will gain a bus gate and restrict non-essential traffic.
Some of the improvements will be widening of pavements and also reducing on-street parking Improvements will also be carried out to main pedestrian areas and key access routes and bus hubs could be created throughout the city centre. Original plans to impose 20mph restrictions in the city centre were put forward in 2007 with enforcement proposed by 2010. At that time the plan was to be the first council in Scotland to restrict speed. Today a council spokesman said they have been rolling out these 20mph zones over the past four to five years, but could not do them all at once. By

Star Signs
Joan Charles
I am delighted to be delivering your stars although; I won’t be doing them in the traditional way, as I am not an astrologer. For many years I have provided the stars using Tarot cards and that is what I will be doing here so, I guess in a sense they should be called, Taroscopes. Anyway, I do hope you enjoy what the cards have to say.
Aries
There is a spring in your step and you’re ready to take on any challenge that comes your way and face it head on. Life in general could be taking some turns for the better, which will lift your spirits.
Taurus
Finances are on the agenda as you cast an eye over them to ensure that they are running smoothly and everything is how it should be. Money is not your God but you do like to keep a check on it.
Gemini
There is no shame in asking for help when you need it, others are there to support you and all you need to do is say yes to them and they will be there in a jiffy. Pride can get in the way of you getting what you need so remove it.
Cancer
As we start to see a glimpse of the sun your mind could be on having things done to and in the home – which ever way round it won’t make any difference as you will just be delighted to see things happen.
Leo
Once you have made your mind up that’s normally it, there is no changing it or going back however, at times perhaps you are cutting off your nose to spite your face. Maybe giving in and meeting someone half way would help.
Virgo
A new challenge could give you a real boost and leave you feeling excited about future prospects. You are happy about things like this so long as they are done in an organized and down to earth fashion.
Libra
Lots of fun, that’s what, will make your week - especially after some tough things that may have happened over the last wee while. Getting a wee break will do you the world of good and allow you to have a fresh approach.
Scorpio
Ohh, I feel romance in the air and if you have been looking for someone who is on your wavelength then, they may well be heading your direction. Mind you, they will need to live up to you’re expectations first.
Sagittarius
There are times in life when you might think others just don’t get where you’re coming from. The communication just seems to be slightly out and I sense this across the board so, make sure you keep things clear and concise.
Capricorn
I’m feeling that you could be considering taking a wee break soon but you are in the midst of weighing up the pros and con’s of this before you do anything. I sense you would love to throw caution to the wind and just go but that wouldn’t sit well with you.
Aquarius
Seems very much like all work and little play for you just now which, in one way this is great as you have security and in another it’s taking up all of your time and leaving you with little you time so balance is called for.
Pisces
Family matters could occupy your thoughts right now and you might feel that there is nothing you can do as your hands are tied. The main thing is that you are there for support and that all that matters.

SPAIN’S HIDDEN
GEM Are you looking for a new destination to try this year? Whether it is your annual fortnight or a short break you are after, Nerja is well worth considering. It is situated on the Costa del Sol, Spain, which has great access from both Glasgow and Edinburgh on a daily basis in the summer, but is a great all year round destination as it boasts over 300 days of sunshine each year. You arrive at Malaga airport and the transfer time to Nerja is usually under an hour. It’s a traditional Spanish town with cobbled streets and closed to traffic in the town centre. This resort has managed to retain lots of its traditional character and charm with its narrow streets, restaurants and Tapas bars so you are spoiled for choice. It’s a fantastic location of being less than 2 hours from the Sierra Nevada Mountains and means you can be skiing in the morning and end the day on the beach with a cocktail!

Hypnosis
By Peter Kavanagh Ph.D.
Josephine Mackenzie BSC (Hons) Psychology, PG Cert Clinical Hypnosis, Clinical Practitioner. MBPS MBSCH
How many of us find ourselves questioning our life direction and purpose or whether there is a sense of a higher purpose?
Anxiety can prevent individuals from being able to function effectively and hypnosis for Anxiety is very effective as it helps the sufferer to ‘control’ those situations that can make life unbearable from exam anxiety, fear of flying, dentist, hospital, to crossing the street and much more. For the purpose of this article I will focus on performance anxiety. Performance anxiety [which we will refer to in this article as PA] is an inappropriate response to a future event. The severity of PA varies dramatically, from mild fight or flight symptoms to complete avoidance and terror of a yet to be experienced event, alongside a total inability to function in that event. Performance of any description requires preparation and a certain amount of adrenaline or stimulation, and therefore engaging the autonomic nervous system. Sometimes PA is a direct result of lack of preparation because an individual is too relaxed and fails to put in enough effort, which - is a precursor to it. Conversely, individuals who worry excessively can feel overwhelmed and produce inertia to act, which in turn prevents appropriate preparation. Either way, the net result is identical, an inability to function appropriately in the event. Hypnosis can effectively encourage working more on preparation as well as the actual performance by reducing the anxiety. When selecting a clinical hypnosis it is necessary to consider an appropriate stimulation and preparation for the patient that is sufficient to motivate change while
reducing any inappropriate anxiety. The PA can be treated as a stand-alone event for the individual and they come along for hypnotherapeutic assistance for strategic and practical purposes rather than for therapy. There are specific areas to be identified and considered when treating PA, usually the information required to formulate the specific treatment comes from the initial interview between therapist and patient at the point of taking the case history. When an individual presents with PA they will have a unique view of the problem in relation to their performance. For some people PA becomes an avoidance technique created by low self-esteem, while at the other end of the scale there are individuals for whom the desire for a ‘perfect’ performance creates constant disappointment and therefore a self-fulfilling prophecy with regard to the anxiety-evoking event or events. The PA can often be a reaction to stress. If the patient has poor coping strategies, the condition may remain impervious to the therapeutic process. It would then be necessary to explore further in relation to what is happening in the patient’s life in order to ascertain whether there are any additional stressors that are exacerbating the PA, then decide whether there would be a benefit to teaching other coping skills as a better way of managing their stress. www.hypnosis2heal.co.uk Email josephine@hypnosis2heal.co.uk Phone; 01475 727004 mobile 07976124488
The truth is we all ask this at some stage in our lives. However many fail to acknowledge that we have a purpose and our very being on this planet has actually been planned. Understanding ourselves at a deeper level helps us gain clarity and direction.
When your Soul incarnated on this earth it arrived with your first message from spirit encoded in the sound vibrations of your name. The energies of your name manifest your life’s path with all its experiences pre-chosen at source for you by you. Your name is no accident because it was precisely the vehicle that transmuted the energies chosen by the soul. In order to be born our Soul’s had to agree to the paths chosen and then we incarnated as humans to experience everything that was planned as there are no accidents of fate. What was selected by the Soul was what is required for it’s own evolution into higher consciousness while on earth for this incarnation. Upon conception we begin our journey into the physical and enter the world at birth where our environment shapes and unfolds the experiences of our life through the elements that constitute our parents, family, health and wealth, etc. If we view our life as a clock, when we were born the alarm was set and at some future time we hear the alarm and acknowledge that it is time to exit this world. Because our Soul was shown our unique life path in advance, being in charge it knows the destiny. However our worldly mind was not privy to this path and so life simply progressed. Over our lifetime we experience the intended route as energies manifest as life lessons (or challenges), goals and talents as we journey back to our source, for to be on earth is an opportunity to ascend to a higher state of consciousness. You could say that your soul agreed to a contract with the universal energies, a soul contract for this life. Through a greater connection with one’s Soul more of our true path is revealed and thus we
engage more on the route intended.
When I do a Soul Path reading is an accurate and empowering method that reveals this coded message in your name and augments the connection one has with their soul and thus their true destiny in life. It can give you clarity of your destiny and put in context the pains of the past so we may see them as the valuable lessons they actually are. A Soul Path Reading can be a very cathartic and healing experience with the realisation that our human mind is fully aware of and working with our Soul. From here on every life experience is inter-related and our past is part of our present having direct effects on our future. The process of a Soul Path reading begins with the application of the unique Numerology of Moses to the letters of your birth name. No date of birth is required just your name for it is in the vibration of each letter that holds the elements of your chosen life. Today it is being increasingly used by Intuitive Counsellors, Life Coaches and other complementary therapists and can even be used to assess the energies of a business name to help steer it to success! With all this in mind it really is of no surprise that Soul Path reading is increasing in popularity and continues to help many feel empowered to enjoy all that life brings.

Tiesto Martin and Paltrow in “Conscious uncoupling” Knocked Out By Walking Into Screen
L’Wren Scott Leaves £5.5million estate to Jagger
It has been revealed that L’Wren Scott who took her own life last month has left everything she owned to her long time partner and rock superstar Mick Jagger. It is reported that the reason behind her taking her own life was due to the crippling £4 million debt her fashion design company had taken on.
Last week Singer Chris Martin and Actress Gwyneth Paltrow announced that their 10 year marriage has came to an end with a “conscious uncoupling”, the term whihc the couple has used to describe their break up. The reasons are unclear for the split, with some sources close to the couple citing Paltrow’s “obsessive lifestyle
rules” which Martin apparently felt were hard on the children. “He wanted the family to watch DVDs and TV – and also wanted them to eat treats every now and then” The source also mentioned Paltrows obsession with the Kabbalah designer faith, which she has been increasingly turning to for lifestyle guidance.

Protecting Scotland’s ageing population from fire Protecting Scotland’s older people from fire, demands strong partnerships between members of the public, firefighters and other key service providers who are often in a position to spot when someone could be at risk. This message from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) comes as population trends indicate rising life expectancy for both men and women in Scotland. Assistant Chief Officer Lewis Ramsay, the SFRS director of prevention and protection, said: “Almost 300 older people have died in fires over the past 10 years. This represents nearly half of the total number of fire deaths in Scotland. It is vital that we all consider the safety of those around us and help people to stay safe.” ACO Ramsay continued: “Over the past few years, the government has consulted widely and looked at how health and care services can continue to be delivered – and improved for Scotland’s older people. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service stands ready to work in a co-ordinated manner with key partners to ensure residents can continue to live safely and securely within their own homes.”
ACO Ramsay explained “Statistics reveal that if you are in a house fire your risk of injury is the same regardless of where you stay but if you live in a deprived area then the risk of you having a fire
in the first place is more than three times greater. Certain lifestyle factors have long been known to increase the chances that someone will experience a fire within the home, with people who are older, live alone, or with limited mobility at higher than average risk. “In addition, firefighters consider whether special equipment, such as linked fire alarms or fireretardant furnishings – may be needed to help householders stay safe. Rather than focussing on the number of home visits carried out or how many people were spoken to at an event, for example, we now focus on the difference services have made and how effective local people feel these have been.” By

Scotland hopes for a future of female plumbers 1% percent of plumbers in Britain are female. A shocking statistic released by Get Girls Plumbing Campaign.
Get Girls Plumbing Campaign has found that home-owners in Scotland and Ayrshire would like to see more female plumbers and a third of home-owners would prefer a female plumber to fix problems in their home. Shockingly the findings also show that a measly 1%percent of plumbers in Britain are female and it generally stems from gender stereotypes ingrained during school time. During the investigation it was found that during their time at school a quarter of females were actively discouraged from taking up a trade, instead being encouraged to take up more stereotypical friendly roles such as admin or secretarial work.
Nearly a half of females asked said that if they were offered the opportunity again they would go back and learn a trade because of job stability and self assurance. According to a poll of 2000 consumers conducted by WaterSafe, the UK’s leading plumber assurance scheme, found that some of the reasons would be, less likely to be ripped off and feeling more comfortable letting a woman into your home. Although the survey found that four out of five people would not car the gender of their plumber, it all depends on their skill level and their competency. The Scots being a forward thinking country believe that it is time to break gender stereotypes and believe that if they are capable women, could take up a more manual role. comments “When I was at school, noone encouraged me to think of taking up a trade and I was not allowed to study metal work and engineering which was my dream at the time. After completing a psychology degree and teaching for eight years, I decided to take up a more hands on career that meant I could be in control of my life and would give me the flexibility I’d always wanted, I chose plumbing.” Careers Advisor Donna Mason says: “I think WaterSafe’s ‘Get Girls Plumbing’ Campaign is a fantastic way of putting a trade career for women on the news agenda. Stereotyping jobs by the sex of the individual is something that needs to stop. In times when more and more young people are out of work and with a skills shortage in this country, we need to be encouraging young girls into plumbing apprenticeships.”

The survey sought the views of more than 30,000 new-build homebuyers and revealed that nine out of 10 customers would recommend their builder to a friend. The results were announced on Wednesday 12th March at a special ceremony at the House of Commons.

Nurburgring sold for over 100 million Euros
The Nurburgring has been sold to German automotive firm Capricorn Group for a figure totalling over 100m euros, with a further 25m euros of investment in the current infrastructure promised. The German bid beat the HIG Europe Group’s efforts with only minutes to spare.
Capricorn will launch a new company called Capricorn Nurburgring to handle the new business from January 1st 2015. Their plans include relocating the roller coaster to another town in
the region, scrapping the maligned ring card payment system, and remodelling the current Eifeldorf as a Silverstonestyle technology park. Capricorn Nurburgring will be headed by Adam Osieka, a current VLN racer and CEO of new racing/tuning outfit Getspeed, based in the current industry park. “It was a very close thing,” admitted boss-to-be Adam Osieka. “I haven’t slept for two nights, and nothing was decided until the last moment.” By

The statement also went on to say that “it is still time to be patient”. Glaswegians call for end of 24hr Bus Lanes
Glasgow City Council (GCC) has been urged by city motorists to scrap round the clock bus lanes, which fine drivers even when there are no bus services on the road. Councillor Martin Balfour, of the Drumchapel and Anniesland ward who is also a former bus driver himself has lead the charge in removing the revenue padding 24hr cameras from the city. Mr Balfour said in a statement
As far as I am aware, of the 10 24-
hour bus lanes in the city, there are only four where night buses operate. These buses mostly run hourly and cease at 4.30am. And there are no 24hour services. So why does a bus lane need to be enforced 24 hours a day, seven days a week?” Mr Balfour also added in defence of the cities motorists that “It is not unreasonable for someone driving in the city centre during a quiet period to make use of all the lanes available.” By

The Tigers Rev Up For A New Season By
Michael McDaid
Last week at the Glasgow Tigers Speedway at Ashfield Stadium, the sound of high power motorcycles once again split the air, with the Tigers holding their first pre season practice session. I went along to the practice session and managed to grab a few words with Tigers team captain Theo Pijper, also known as the “Flying Dutchman”. Theo is extremely enthusiastic about the coming season saying: “Myself and the team are looking forward to this season and putting in a better performance than last year when we got the wooden spoon” Theo, who is returning to the Tigers after a two year stint with the Edinburgh Monarchs said he was hoping to “drape more gold around [his] shoulders this year and a return to performance of the 2011 season” Enjoy this selection of photos from the session and check out the Glasgow News website for more pictures.

Finnerty Focussed On Play-Off Tilt Braehead Clan head coach Ryan Finnerty says he is happy for his side to be underdogs as they look ahead to their play-off quarter final with Nottingham Panthers. With the play-off finals being hosted in Nottingham, the motivation is on for the Clan to cause an upset and boost the Scottish contingent by joining either Dundee Stars or Fife Flyers in the finals.
However Finnerty admits it was another frustrating weekend as his team lost home and away to the Flyers, who reached the play-offs as a result of their victories over the Purple Army.
He said: “We’ve got to be ready and match the intensity of the Panthers on Thursday in the first leg. We’re going in as the underdogs and that suits us. Nottingham have won the play off’s for the past three seasons and, as
the holders, will be favourites to go through to the final four weekend. Finnerty also went on optimistically:
“On the day we are capable of beating any team and we are solely focussed on making the play off weekend. Looking back at the two games with Fife, it was frustrating, but you have to give credit to a very good Fife team. They needed to win and showed great intensity and just couldn’t claw our way back and we
found it tough get ourselves going.” The Clan are heading to the National Ice Centre on Thursday for the first leg in poor form with only one win in their last seven, before the tie comes back to Glasgow on Saturday. Now the Clan have to get themselves out of their rut and the frustration was felt keenly by defence man Chris Frank as he reflected on another unsuccessful weekend saying:
“Going to the play-offs, you’re going to need fight and we showed character in the third period of our game on Saturday, even though we lost the game in the end. We should take the positive out of that and seeing the fans turn out the way they did was incredible. It’s the reason you play hockey as a player.” By

Rocks Progress to the BBL Trophy Final Stuart Hogg remorse over Biggar foul in Cardiff
Glasgow Rocks overcame a 6-point aggregate deficit to defeat Cheshire Phoenix 98-77 in the BBL Trophy semi-final second leg at the Emirates Arena. The win secured a 172-157 victory on aggregate for the Rocks, earning themselves a place in the final of the competition against Worcester Wolves on the 30th March. An outstanding team performance by the home side ensured their progression in the competition. The ‘Nix were without Mike Creppy, who was given a one-game suspension for his punch of the Rocks’ own Gareth Murray in a game at the Emirates six weeks previous. The sluggish start to the game from both sides did not prepare anyone inside the arena for what was to unfold during the course of the match. Baskets were traded before Phoenix stretched to a 7-point lead midway through the opening quarter. That then livened up the Rocks who finished the quarter with a 20-17 lead following a 10-0 scoring run in their favour in the latter stages of the first period. For once everything was falling for the Rocks as they outscored their Cheshire opponents 33-14 in the third quarter – sending the home crowd
into dreamland as the noise levels continued to increase around the Emirates Arena.
When asked what his half-time words of encouragement were, Sterling said: “I just told them that we had to come
their lead to double figures once more.
The game boiled over with a matter of seconds on the clock as Nix’s Bailey faced-off with a number of Rocks players before a couple of Cheshire fans attempted to get onto the court to defend their man – an ending which marred what was a great spectacle overall.
Cheshire had a score to settle with the Rocks following the suspension of Creppy prior to the game and made sure their feelings were known with abuse being hurled at home fans from the travelling support. Phoenix head coach, John Lavery, even got himself involved shouting at a Rocks fan during the course of the game. Speaking of the events that unfolded, Davis said: “I just think it’s all in the nature of competitiveness. Both teams wanted to win and I think at the end of the game if you’re not Picture: Kierran Allardice on the winning side it hurts. We’ve been on the other out and make sure we threw the first side of that before too so it was just punch. Scotland full-back Stuart Hogg has received a three week playing ban after his sending off in the first-half against Wales at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday the 15th of March. The charge was amended to an act of foul play - Playing an opponent without the ball - which is a mid range offence which can result in a match ban of up to five weeks. This was reduced by two weeks for mitigating factors, including the player’s remorse for the incident both on the day of the match and subsequently through the media. Following his public apology for the incident on Saturday Hogg, speaking to scottishrugby.org, added: “I’m very sorry, I have let people down and apologise to my team-mates,
the Scotland management and all Scotland supporters.” The ban, which ends at midnight on 6 April, means that Hogg misses two further Glasgow Warriors home games against the Ospreys and Treviso, Hogg becomes available for selection for the match against Munster on the 12th of April. By

Scots fencer in fight to get fit
Champion Scots fencer Keith Cook faces a race against time to be fit for the Commonwealth Games in July after breaking his collarbone playing with his children. Keith, 33, a former British champion and five-time Commonwealth medalist, took a tumble while playing outside with his children and bizarrely managed to break his collarbone.
Keith said of the freak accident “I wish I could say it was a spectacular story but I was just playing with the kids in the garden, mucking about, and I slipped and fell funny.”
All is not lost however, and fencing chiefs are confident Keith will make the Games as the normal recovery time for a break of that kind is six to ten weeks.

Eagle Eye: The Ryder Cup Review
SPORT
Fiji will not compete at Commonwealth Games
Future Old Firm youth matches are to be played behind closed doors according to a statement released by Rangers last week ahead of Mondays clash at Murray Park.
Welcome to my new column counting down to the 40th Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in September. It may be 7 months away but it is already the talk of clubhouses up and down the country.
Rangers announced that the game and possibly future matches would be held behind closed doors citing the high costs of policing as the reason for their decision, a statement on the Rangers website said:
Fiji’s netball and rugby sevens teams have had their hopes of competing at the commonwealth games dashed after the Commonwealth Games Federation (GCF) refused their applications to compete as they missed the qualification period. Fiji was re-admitted into the Commonwealth at the beginning of last month after the military ruler of
This week the focus is on the form players from the United States. Players making the headlines at the moment are Zach Johnson, Jordan Speith and Jimmy Walker. All 3 have more or less guaranteed their ticket to Perthshire in September. Johnson, the 2007 Masters Champion, has had a brilliant start to the 2014 campaign by beating Tiger Woods in a play off in December at Woods’ own tournament, the World Challenge, including several top 10 finishes to date. His impeccable short game and previous Ryder Cup appearances are an asset to Tom Watson’s team. The highly rated 20 year old Jordan Speith like Johnson, has also made a very impressive start to the season recording several top ten finishes as well as reaching the last 8 in the Accenture Matchplay in Arizona. Jimmy Walker, the journeyman pro who’s game has went into the stratosphere from the tail end of last season to the start of this season having won 3 times on the PGA Tour from October to last month at the AT+T Pebble Beach Pro Am. It’s pretty ironic that his game has went into the stratosphere, as it is a little known fact that he is a professional deep space photographer and his work is displayed on the official NASA website.
Celtic and Rangers youth matches to be played in empty stadiums
the country Frank Bainimarama who took control through a military coup in 2009 agreed to hold fresh elections. The number three in the world ranked Fiji rugby sevens team will miss the competition for the second time in a row, with the last games they entered being the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, where they took home three medals.

“After consultation with Celtic, Police Scotland and the SPFL the decision has been taken to play the forthcoming home and away SPFL Under 20s League matches against Celtic behind closed doors. This is primarily due to the high level of police presence dictated by Police Scotland and the resulting costs of such required policing” The need for increased policing is due to the same fixture in April of last year resulting in massive damages to the Partick Thistle grounds and the invasion of the pitch by fans.
big opening
The waiting is just about over, with an exciting new season of speedway thrills and spills due to get under way this coming weekend.
The American’s are always stronger on paper and this Ryder Cup will be no different...but we have the Poulter! More of him next week.
Tigers bosses have retained just one of last year’s side, which picked up the wooden spoon, as they look to be far more competitive in the year ahead. The riders – a German, a Dutchman, a Frenchman, two Danes and three Aussies - are now all gathered here in the UK as the excitement level rises amongst the City’s speedway fraternity.
Till next time, this is Eagle Eye signing off.
The Glasgow Allied Vehicles Tigers launch the 2014 British Premier League season with a tough three meetings in three days schedule this weekend. Following their first practise session at
Ashfield Stadium this week, the team travel to face arch rivals Edinburgh Monarchs on Friday night in the first leg of a season opening challenge fixture between the two Scottish sides. 24 hours later the Tigers will travel to Cumbria to launch their league cup campaign against title favourites Workington Comets, before returning to conclude their home and away challenge against Edinburgh at Ashfield Stadium on Sunday, start time 3pm. Tigers bosses are appealing for a big turnout for their season opener: “There has been a lot of hard work
into getting ready for the new season. We have a good team to represent the City against opposition from all around the UK this season, and we want as many people as possible to come along and cheer on the lads.” “If you have never seen live speedway, or haven’t been to watch it for some time, now is the very time to put that right – it’s fast, noisy, atmospheric and above all else great family entertainment.” For more information about the Tigers, and how you can get along to see them race, visit the club website at www.glasgowtigers.co

With the Commonwealth Games less than 119 days away, what will the lasting legacy be for the people of Glasgow and Scotland?
With the cities transport infrastructure being upgraded, brand new sporting premises being built and upgraded, such as Hampden Park being turned into an all sports venue, The Chris Hoy Velodrome, Emirates Arena, amongst many others currently being upgraded. Glasgow Council have spared no
expense and the aim is to inspire future generations that with the correct equipment and the correct mentality they to can reach for the stars and become a sporting champion and an icon for the whole of Scotland. The athletes village will also be used for the benefit of the people of Glasgow, as once the Games are finished, the accommodation will be transformed into affordable housing.
Clyde Gateway the company aiming to regenerate Glasgow after the Commonwealth Games admits that although behind the scenes costs could amount to as much as £1billion pounds it will be worth it because of the lasting effects such as 20,000 new jobs, 20,000 new people living in the area, which of course improves the Glasgow economy. They are also aiming to build 10,000
new homes by 2028 Chief executive Ian Manson says: “We’ve already attracted substantial public sector money to do the groundwork, to make the area attractive to private investment, but already private sector investment is coming into the area. “Really the people we have to convince is the private sector, to create the offices, the factories and the places where local people can work.”
The legacy of the Commonwealth Games will be the biggest regeneration project ever undertaken in Scotland, and shows an ambition to improve the people of Glasgow’s standard of living after years of deprivation. Perhaps Glasgow will finally be able to throw off its “Sick Man Of Europe” tag once and for all. By
