Search is on for Commonwealth community champions PEOPLE in East Renfrewshire are being offered the chance to play their part in next year’s Commonwealth Games.
The Glasgow 2014 baton is currently travelling across the globe, visiting the 70 nations and territories of the Commonwealth. Its last leg before the Glasgow games will be next summer, as it makes its way through every council area in Scotland. And you have the chance to be chosen as one of the baton bearers. Nominations can be made now and East Renfrewshire Council is encouraging community champions from the area to put themselves forward. Last month the Queen’s Baton Relay was launched when Her Majesty placed a personal message into the titanium and elm baton at a Buckingham Palace ceremony attended by athletes including Sir Chris Hoy. LORD PROVOST MARKS THE START OF WORK ON SOUTH ECO HOMES WORK has started on 32 new affordable homes on a site in the South Side of Glasgow which has lain unused for 10 years.
GHA, part of Wheatley Group, is building the homes – a mix of midmarket rent and shared equity ownership - in partnership with its sister organisation Lowther Homes. The £3.6million development includes 28 houses which have also been specially designed with energy-saving features which will reduce residents’ energy bills dramatically. Glasgow’s Lord Provost Sadie Docherty helped mark the start of work on the site of the old St Julie’s Primary School in Croftfoot Road. These homes will give people another option to get a good-quality home they can afford. “And as well as being affordable to rent, these energy-efficient homes will be cheaper to run.”
GHA will build the homes with contractor City Building and Lowther Homes will let and manage them. Almost £1million of funding was secured through the Scottish Government’s Greener Homes Innovation Scheme. The funding bid was also supported by Glasgow City Council who sold the land to GHA. The site, due for completion in Spring 2015, will have 28 two and
four bedroom semi-detached and terraced houses for mid market rent, and four two bedroom flats for shared equity ownership. The Lord Provost said: “It’s great to see new, mixed tenure, homes being built. I know these affordable homes will be life-changing for those lucky enough to secure them. It’s a great achievement for everyone involved.” The homes are the next stage in an
innovative project which began with four prototypes of the ‘Glasgow House’ built in a partnership between Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) and City Building. The 28 new-build houses will feature the main elements of the Glasgow House, including sun spaces, solar panels and very high levels of air tightness to minimise heat loss. Building the new homes will also help bring employment and training opportunities for local people. City Building already employs 16 apprentices in the area around Croftfoot. Megan Cowan (17) and Bruce Taylor (19), are both 2nd year joiners. They are both from the South Side of Glasgow and will be working on the Croftfoot site. Graham Paterson, Executive Director of City Building, said: “We are committed to developing sustainable housing throughout Glasgow that, through innovative techniques employed in the Glasgow House, will help reduce energy consumption and tackle fuel poverty. “Lowther Homes’ development is another step forward in our goal of creating a more sustainable living environment for the people of Glasgow and we are delighted to be part of the team that will bring this project to life.”

Around 100 people are needed every day to carry the baton and share in the excitement and celebrations of the countdown to the Glasgow 2014 games. Nominees must be: • 12 years old or older by the date of nomination; • Have made a positive contribution to the lives of others through community sport; • Undertaken voluntary work or contributed to schools or voluntary organisations; • Contributed towards greater inclusion for disadvantaged sections of the community; • Been a role model or mentor to youth through sport;

SUPERSTAR MUM: Noreen Siddiqui from Newton Mearns is shortlisted for the Tesco award
NOREEN Siddiqui, 48, of Newton Mearns, Glasgow, has been shortlisted for the prestigious Tesco Mum of the Year Awards 2014. The Awards, the largest of their kind, will take place in March at London’s iconic hotel, The Savoy. Noreen’s story was selected from amongst thousands of nominations sent in from all over the UK.
Having been nominated for her amazing fundraising for Bone Marrow Transplant charities, Noreen has helped recruit 1000 new donors and £170,000 for the Anthony Nolan appeal and is now targeting reaching £200,000 by Christmas. She has raised more money than any other individual for the charity. Two years ago Noreen discovered that her adopted daughter Ayesha had an acute form of leukaemia – Philadelphia Positive – when she was just six years old. Since then she has worked tirelessly to raise both money and awareness of the lack of donors, especially among ethnic minorities and in mixed race relationships. She has been successful in recruiting celebrities including radio and television presenter Hardeep and comedian Sanjeev Kholi to publicise the efforts of the Anthony Nolan charity and has even had the issue of the shortage of bone marrow transplant donors debated in the Scottish Parliament. Apart from her work with Anthony Nolan she has also founded her own Ayesha Bone Marrow Appeal.
This will be the ninth year of the Tesco Mum of the Year Awards. The glamorous red carpet ceremony, which attracts a host of celebrity guests, will celebrate inspirational mums from all over the UK, who have made a difference to the lives of others. Judging will take place in October and November. All shortlisted mums will be considered by the panel, which includes DJ Sara Cox, TV personality Gaby Logan and sports presenter Denise Lewis. If Noreen is selected by the judges to be one of the winning mums, she will be treated to a full makeover and her own Tesco Living magazine photo shoot, before being presented with her award in front of friends, family and celebrity guests. 50th anniversary of the Cambuslang and District Voluntary Care Club
Local crime writers double up at The Avenue LOCAL crime writers Elly Grant and Zach Abrams will be at the Avenue Shopping Centre in Newton Mearns to discuss their latest books in an event organised by Waterstones at Primavera on Wednesday 20th November between 7pm and 8.00pm.
ON Wednesday 6th of November, Provost Eileen Logan hosted a civic reception to mark the 50th anniversary of the Cambuslang and District Voluntary Care Club at Rutherglen Town Hall. The Club is a meeting place for adults with learning and/or physical difficulties and provides leisure facilities in the company of friends of all ages. The Club meets on Wednesday
evenings and typically starts at 6.30pm with a cup of tea, sandwich and cake and can be quite a noisy but happy affair when everyone is trying to chat at the same time! This is followed by carpet bowls, dominoes, jigsaw puzzles, Lego, Scrabble, Connect4 and other games. The evening finishes at 9pm. The Club session runs from September till May and during that time there is an annual outing to the
pantomime at Christmas, an Annual Dinner in January and, in May, the annual coach trip, with afternoon tea, to the coast. April is the month when they organize their fundraiser which is always well supported. The Club is very grateful to a number of organizations who, over the years, have faithfully given generous donations including South Lanarkshire Council which provides grants towards some special events.
‘The Unravelling of Thomas Malone’ is a gritty crime thriller written by Elly Grant set in the Govanhill area of Glasgow. Nominations sought for best bar or club in City Centre BEST Bar None Glasgow – the annual awards initiative which works with the licensed trade to make the city centre a safer place at night – is for the first time seeking nominations from the public, for the best bar or club in Glasgow.
The new ‘People’s Choice’ award, supported by Community Safety Glasgow, will celebrate the best bar or club in the city to consistently strive to reduce alcohol-related anti-social behaviour by providing the safest and most comfortable environment for its customers and staff, based on the principles of the Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005. Members of the public will be asked to consider a number of safety-based criteria when submitting a nomination for any one of Glasgow’s bars and clubs. These include the promotion of non-alcoholic drinks, the provision of suitable disabled access and the quality of the venue’s provision of signage directing customers to the nearest ‘nitezones’, taxis and public transport. Those who submit a nomination for the subsequent winning entry of the People’s Choice award will also be entered into a competition to win an invitation for two to attend the Best Bar None awards ceremony at the Grand Central hotel on 14 November, 2013. Phil Walker, Managing Director of Community Safety Glasgow, said: “We’re constantly looking for new and innovative ways in which we can ensure the Best Bar None initiative works to its maximum potential for Glasgow to make the city centre a safer place at night. Best Bar None is a UK-wide scheme, which is implemented in Glasgow by Community Safety Glasgow (CSG) to promote the five key principles of the Licensing ( Scotland) Act 2005. All Best Bar None candidates undergo a rigorous assessment process each year, including a detailed inspection of the premises by Police Scotland Licensing Teams, lasting up to two hours. Scores are awarded under three levels – ‘essential’, ‘desired’ or ‘bonus - and each application generates a standard of award depending on its final score. ‘Gold’ awards are allocated to the highest scoring venues in each category; ‘silver’ awards apply to venues which demonstrate a higher level of compliance towards legal and best practices, and ‘bronze’ awards are allocated where a basic level of compliance with the five principles of the Act has been demonstrated. The five principles are the prevention of crime and disorder, the protection of public safety, the prevention of public nuisance, the promotion of public health and the protection of children from harm. Since its introduction in 2005, Best Bar None Glasgow has contributed significantly towards the regulation of the sale and consumption of alcohol, and to the improvement of the safety of people in the city centre at night. Best Bar None recently launched an app for iPhone and Android, which allows users to find awardwinning bars and clubs in Glasgow via GPS, as well as to access deals, leave reviews and comments and post photos, and send content for BBN’s Facebook page. Govanhill slimmers are dreaming of a light Christmas! WE’RE all familiar with the 12 days of Christmas but one Govanhill slimming club is counting down the 12 weighs of Christmas – and planning to be slimmer by the end of them.
As well as making their Christmas lists and planning their Christmas shopping, members of the Govanhill Slimming World group are embarking on a 12-week mission to slim down in time for Christmas and the New Year. Their festive challenge is part of an initiative running in Slimming World groups across the UK and Ireland called the 12 Weeks of Christmas. The Govanhill group, which is held at Trinity Church every Wednesday at 7.30pm, will celebrate the launch of their seasonal slim with an early Christmas party, complete with Christmas decorations and party food. Pauline Jones, who runs the Govanhill Slimming World group, says: "The run-up to Christmas is really busy for most people, it can play havoc with our regular routines and there are lots of extra occasions like Halloween, Bonfire Night and Christmas do’s that can make it harder than usual to manage our weight. So it’s easy to reach January a few pounds heavier than we were before. In fact, sadly lots of people write off their weight loss resolutions until the New Year, even though they’d love to be feeling lighter and brighter for the party season. “So the aim of our 12 Weeks of Christmas is to show everyone that it’s possible to slim down with Slimming World whatever the time of year, and anyone who gets started now could easily be a stone – or even two – lighter by January. HUMZA Yousaf, SNP MSP for Glasgow, is encouraging people across the city to volunteer in their community. Focus Scotland Magazine, the magazine for volunteering and the third sector in Scotland, visited the Scottish Parliament to encourage more people to volunteer – a call which Humza Yousaf is more than happy to support. Figures from Focus Scotland Magazine show that every year, more than 30% of adults across Scotland volunteer and donate more than 142 million hours to their communities each year. Even an hour’s worth volunteering can have a positive impact on a community and make a real difference, while being of benefit to the individual. Humza Yousaf commented: “I started volunteering when I was 10, and I take every opportunity to encourage others to get involved and give up some of their time to help others. “Even an hour can make a difference – help to Keep Scotland beautiful by picking up litter in a
local park or public area; spend an hour supporting an isolated older person to get out and about through many befriending activities or ask if a local charity shop needs help sorting stock or manning the till. “I’ll be doing my part by volunteering at the Salvation Army food bank in Easterhouse in the next few weeks. “With the cold weather approaching, the Salvation Army Corps and other food banks in Glasgow will be very grateful for any offers of help or donations of tinned goods. “We’ve seen a huge number of people from across the world apply to volunteer at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The Proclaimers ask public to “think twice” Discounted fares trial
SCOTTISH singing duo, Craig and Charlie Reid from The Proclaimers, launched the 2013 Scottish Poppy Appeal in Edinburgh, calling for the public to remember Scotland’s veterans by forgetting about small, everyday treats and putting the money in the poppy tins instead. Poppyscotland, the charity behind the Appeal, needs to raise more money every year to continue its work, providing lifechanging support to the most vulnerable veterans and their families living in Scotland. The charity has launched an advertising campaign, featuring images with dual meanings, urging people to give up small, forgettable items like pizza, doughnuts or
takeaway coffee and donate to the Appeal, to enable Poppyscotland to deliver support in areas such as advice, home adaptations, mental health counselling and mobility aids. Speaking at the launch, Craig Reid said: “Charlie and I are proud to launch the Scottish Poppy Appeal this year. It’s a cause we’ve always supported and one that means a lot to us. Poppyscotland does a fantastic job in looking after ex-Servicemen and women, and their families too. The more money that goes in the tins, the more help Poppyscotland can provide. We hope people will get behind this year’s campaign and recognise that the money they put in the poppy tins will make a huge impact.” The Scottish Poppy Appeal is Poppyscotland’s biggest fundraising event and is Scotland’s biggest street collection. Following a slight drop in income in 2012, the charity needs to raise more money this year. The Scottish Poppy Appeal runs until 11th November. for Glasgow jobseekers IN a bid to help more people find work in the run up to Christmas First Glasgow has announced that it will slash single fares by up to 55% for jobseekers in the city.
From the 28th of October for a trial period, First Glasgow is offering jobseekers holding a Job Centre Plus Travel Discount Card significant discounts on the cost of single fares. Jobseekers can buy a city-wide single ticket for just £1 (a saving of 90p) and a networkwide fare for £2 (a saving of £2.45). First Glasgow confirmed that eligible jobseekers can access the discounted fares for any purpose: attending job interviews or training; visiting Job Centre Plus; making a trip to the shops, cinema, football or visiting friends and family. Jobseekers taking advantage of specially reduced fares simply show their Job Centre Plus Travel Discount Card to the driver every time they board a First bus and retain their travel ticket as normal. First Glasgow’s announcement follows an Office for National Statistics Report which revealed that almost a third of households in Glasgow are inhabited by people who are not in work. Talking about the support for jobseekers, First’s Commercial Director for Scotland, Kevin Belfield said: “We are one of Glasgow’s major employers with more than 2,700 staff and our buses transport around 114 million people a year. We are a vital part of the local community and proud that we are playing a small part in helping people looking for work. “More people travel to work by bus than all other
forms of public transport combined. We are pleased to be in a position to offer discounted fares for jobseekers, enabling them to better access employment opportunities and helping the local communities and economies that we serve.” Stephen McConnachie, Partnership Manager for Scotland at the Department of Work and Pensions, was delighted when First Glasgow offered its support: “This is a wonderful initiative and we are delighted that First Glasgow has pledged to support hundreds of job seekers in the run up to and during the festive period. ‘We’ve worked closely with First Glasgow in putting together the trial for jobseekers. This will help them travel to interviews, training opportunities and job centres as well as making it easier to use the bus for everyday trips to the shops or visiting friends and family.’ The trial will run for 12 weeks, from Monday 28 October 2013 until Sunday 19 January 2014. Those eligible for the Travel Discount card, issued by Job Centre Plus, include people claiming Jobseekers Allowance, Incapacity Benefit, Employment and Support Allowance or Income Support and are actively engaged with a Job Centre Plus adviser in returning to employment. There are no peak restrictions, but the discount is not valid on special fare services including the Glasgow Shuttle 500, 747, night services and event shuttles. Researchers identify seven types of breast cancer for more accurate prognosis WOMEN with breast cancer could soon benefit from new and improved prognostic testing that identifies seven distinct types of breast cancer, giving more accurate information about breast cancer type and prognosis, according to a study funded by Breast Cancer Campaign.
The findings, reported in the British Journal of Cancer, could revolutionise the way breast cancer patients are treated by giving clinicians more detailed information about a patients’ breast cancer type and helping them create a more personalised treatment plan, avoiding over or under-treatment. Breast cancer is a biologically complex disease and each tumour can have very different properties, so the more information that doctors have about each patient’s cancer, the better they can plan treatments. Currently just two proteins are tested for as standard in breast cancer cells (known as biomarkers): the oestrogen receptor (ER), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), alongside information about the tumour size, spread and grade[1],[2],[3]. In research funded by Breast Cancer Campaign, Dr Andy Green and
colleagues at the University of Nottingham, Nottingham University Hospitals and Nottingham Trent University, wanted to see if, by testing for more biomarkers, but keeping the number of biomarkers as low as possible to make an affordable test a realistic proposition, they could devise categories that better reflect the diversity of breast cancer and, importantly, better predict how a patient’s cancer is likely to progress. Using tissue that now forms part of the Breast Cancer Campaign Tissue Bank, the team tested 1073 tumour samples and from these, 997 (93%) fitted perfectly into one of seven classes, whereas 76 (7%) had mixed characteristics and couldn’t be put into a distinct category. They then verified these classes in another 238 tumour samples. The seven classes are defined by different combinations and levels of ten biomarkers found in breast cancer cells. These biomarkers include ER and HER2, the two biomarkers currently tested for in clinics, but also others that are not currently tested for, such as p53, cytokeratins, HER3 and HER4. To test whether the new classes could give doctors more information about
prognosis, Dr Green’s team compared the classes to survival outcomes from the patient samples. Each of the seven classes was found to have its own unique survival outcome. This indicates that the classes can tell us more about prognosis and help doctors to fine-tune treatment plans to improve survival. Importantly, the technology required to measure protein biomarkers in tumour samples is already in place in most pathology laboratories across the UK, whereas newly developed genetic profiling tests such as Oncotype DX need to be sent to specialist laboratories, which brings additional costs. With further support including from the Medical Research Council and the University of Nottingham, Dr Green and his colleagues, together with Nottingham Prognostics Limited, have now developed a diagnostic test using these seven distinct classes, which could be ready for use in the clinic in as little as two years. The test, called the Nottingham Prognostic Index Plus (NPI+), integrates the seven new classes into the existing Nottingham Prognostic Index test currently used by pathologists to assess information about tumour size, spread and grade.
New Subway Smartcard has arrived THE next-generation of Subway smart ticketing has arrived in Glasgow.
Smart gates have been installed in all 15 Subway stations and from Wednesday 30 October passengers are being asked to register to receive their own personal Smartcard. The new system will be more flexible and offer customers the benefits of a contactless, paperless system including pay-as-you-go travel. Strathclyde Partnership for Transport Chief Executive Gordon Maclennan said: “SPT is carrying out a full-scale modernisation of the world’s thirdoldest Subway system and the switch over to smart technology is another key milestone for us. I’m delighted that customers can now access the great benefits this brings. “Smartcards will mean an end to paper tickets and easier, quicker journeys with fewer queues at ticket offices. I would encourage anyone who uses the Subway to apply now for their own card. It is reusable and is the most secure way to travel as it’s unique to the individual.” Subway passengers can add money on to their Smartcards to use anytime without an expiry date. The new ticketing system
solution includes new software, smartcard ticketing machines, smart gates and related ticketing equipment across all 15 Subway stations. A key requirement was the need for the new technology to be ITSOcompliant (ITSO is the national specification, or Standard, for smart ticketing). It will enable the Subway Smartcard to be used between different transport modes, such as bus, train and ferry, to make end to end travel easier in future. The national concessionary travel scheme in Scotland is currently backed by ITSO technology. SPT is in the final stages of testing the integration and use of National Entitlement Cards (NEC) to establish that they too can ‘tap and go’ on the Subway. SPT Chairman Jim Coleman said: “You only have to look at how successful Smartcards have been worldwide in encouraging people on to public transport. “This is a great step in the right direction and by introducing smart technology on the Subway first, it will hopefully prove to other operators that a simple, fullyflexible cashless ticket will not only reduce journey times but also get more people to use the system too.”

Talented Glasgow student makes final of prestigious national photography awards programme which will discover the next generation of UK talent.
The eight Hotel Indigo hotels in the UK have been paired with local universities taking part in the WPO Student Focus competition. The students from around the country have been challenged to create individual photography projects inspired by the hotels’ local neighbourhood in a bid to be appointed as Hotel Indigo’s next official photographer. Neil is currently in his first year at Reid Kerr College studying for his HND and is one of eight finalists from
the UK who was selected by his lecturer after being acknowledged for his artistic talent. The winner will be announced on 26th November 2013 and will be rewarded with a paid commission to shoot the Neighbourhood Story for the newest Hotel Indigo to open in Europe in 2014. The students’ photography will also be exhibited at Somerset House in May 2014, followed by a tour of the eight Hotel Indigo hotels in the UK at which guests and local residents will be invited to view the students' portfolio of work.

GHA awarded top international prize THE GHA has won one of Europe’s most prestigious prizes for business excellence.
The European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) has recognised Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) as an international industry leader with a track record of continuous improvement. GHA, part of Wheatley Group, was presented with the “Leading with Vision, Inspiration and Integrity” prize at the 2013 EFQM Finals in Vienna, Austria. Earlier this year, GHA won an EFQM Good Practice award, beating off competition from international organisations such as electronics giant Bosch, for its “Think Yes” behavioural-change programme for staff. “This latest prize is another tremendous achievement and I was proud to accept the prize on behalf of the organisation,” said GHA Chair Gordon Sloan. “But it really belongs to Chief Executive Martin Armstrong, the Executive and Leadership teams and all the staff at GHA who deliver services to our customers every day with passion and commitment.” The EFQM Finals in Vienna featured global leaders, including BMW, and representatives of countries from Russia to Spain and England to Turkey and Belgium. City Health 2013 is being held on 4-5 November at the Science Centre in Glasgow, Scotland. The event is organised by Knowledge-Action-Change in partnership with Turning Point Scotland, The Scottish Council of Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) and Esprit de Bois. The conference canvasses a wide range of urban health issues including sexual health, club drugs, alcohol policy, policing, sex work, migration and harm reduction. The conference will feature a special focus on public health in Scotland including a special panel discussion on HIV in Scotland with Professor Michel Kazatchkine, Dr Roy Robertson and Georgina Perry.
Earlier school registration date for parents in Glasgow area GLASGOW has introduced an additional school registration week to take place in November for parents to register their child for P1 entry.
The council's Executive Committee agreed to the earlier date to allow schools and the authority to more effectively manage the allocation of children to schools, particularly for those living in the catchment area. This means parents/carers of children who are due to start primary one in August 2014 can register their child during school registration week which this year runs from 11th - 15th November. Councillor Stephen Curran, Executive Member for Education and Young People, is urging parents to get along to their local school and see what it has to offer. He said: "We've made some major improvements to our schools in recent months as part of the 4Rs programme.
"We have some of the best schools in Scotland and it is important for families living in the area to check out their local school and register there. Of course, parents still have the right to make a placing request but we would encourage them to consider their local school first. "The new additional date for registering either a P1 starting school, P7 pupils transferring to secondary school and managing placing requests, will make the whole process easier for families across the city.” Having registration week in November also allows the council to comply with legislation and advise parents, in writing, of the school their child will be going to in time. Single: The Saturdays – ‘Disco Love’ ‘DISCO Love’ is the new, infectiously-bubbly, track from The Saturdays. The light-hearted lyrics hint to the group’s love of disco music, with the video flashbacking to music lovers of 1979, 1989 and 1999. With lines such as “You take me back in time, to 1999, we hear the DJ playing Hit Me Baby One More Time”, it’s a feel good track that pop-lovers are already going crazy for. Album: Matt Cardle - Porcelain XFACTOR 2010 winner, Matt Cardle, releases new album Porcelain this month. Illustrating his diverse range of talents, the album features a variety of different styles, from pop to rock, and even some tracks with a more gospel feel. The album was co-written and co-produced by Cardle, and includes a collaboration with Mel C on track ‘Loving You’. Title track ‘Porcelain’ is a powerful song which highlights Cardle’s fantastic vocal range, but the stand out track has to be the epic ‘A Little Too Late’ Video: Let’s Buy Happiness – ‘Run’ THE eagerly awaited album ‘Chants for Friends’ from Let’s Buy Happiness has arrived, accompanied by a video for first single - ‘Run’. The song has a chilled-out vibe, with outstanding vocals from lead vocalist Sarah Hall. The track is hauntingly atmospheric, with the video equally matching the eeriness. Filmed in different speeds, with some footage played in reverse, the overall effect is a creepy, Horror movie style vibe. Gig: Goo Goo Dolls, Glasgow O2 Academy THE Goo Goo Dolls rocketed to fame with their hit song ‘Iris’ - originally written for the 1998 film, City of Angels, starring Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan – and so it was no surprise that this track was the highlight of their recent appearance at Glasgow’s O2 Academy. There have been many covers of ‘Iris’ over the years, but nothing compared to seeing the original version performed live, in front of a euphoric crowd. The band played a great mix of older songs, includin ‘Slide’, ‘Broadway’ and ‘Black Balloon’, as well as performing some of new tracks from their more recent albums. The great thing about The Goo Goo Dolls is every song tells a story and you are able to journey through the song with the band.
Martina Salveta decade back to life. Not only did the show have classic songs, such as ‘Hippy Hippy Shake’, ‘Go Now’ by The Moody Blues, ‘Whiter Shade of Pale’ by Procol Harum and ‘California Dreaming’ by The Mamas and The Papas, it also celebrated all other things 60’s. There were big screens behind the band, which showed favourite adverts, pictures of all the muchloved 60’s icons of Carnaby Street, such as Twiggy, The Beatles, The Monkeys and The Kinks. The highlight of the night had to be the footage of the moon landing, followed by the lead guitarist playing the American National Anthem, breaking straight into ‘Pinball Wizard’ by The Who. If you are looking for a blast from the past, this is certainly the show for you! The attention to detail on the night was phenomenal - from the retro adverts at intermission to the information on the timeline-esk commentary which accompanied the amazing song selection loved by the 1960’s generation. This five-piece band, whom have made it their mission in life to ensure that this fabulous era doesn’t go forgotten, are unbelievably talented musicians and know how to have a great time. The audience could barely stay in their seats – with almost everyone getting up to have a dance. The Finally had every single person on their feet, clapping and singing along to ‘Sleepy Jean’ by the Monkeys. This was a great night out and a must see for any music lover.

Come dine with us… at Jayz Bar and Restaurant THERE’S no denying the bitter arrival of Scottish winter, and with the dark, cold nights, we’ve been looking for places to warm up with great food and drink. We headed along to the newly opened Jayz Bar and Restaurant, on Kilmarnock Road in Shawlands, in search of comfort food and warming service…and we weren’t disappointed.
Jayz has managed to achieve a friendly, local-bar-feeling, at the same time as providing hungry customers with much more than standard pub food. The menu, which features additions and twists on classic dishes from chef Chris – who ran his own restaurant in Japan for 15 years before coming back to Glasgow, is surprisingly varied for a non-city centre bar. With so much to choose from, we asked for recommendations from owner Gary, and started with Classic Garlic Prawns (£4.25) and a starter
portion of Jayz special Skewers (£3.40 for a meat and veggie mix). The prawns, which come with chucky bread and lashings of sauce, were perfectly cooked and delicious, but the must-try from the starter options has to be the Skewers. Covered in crispy breadcrumbs, they included Black Pudding (we fought over who would get this one, be warned!), Pork and Chicken. There are also a wide variety of Skewers available from the main’s
menu – but we decided to try one of Chris’s Rib Eye Steaks (2 Steaks & a bottle of Prosecco for £25, throughout November or £13.95 each) and the Scottish Salmon with Crispy Poached Egg, (£8.95). The steak, which we had medium rare, was perfect – served with chunky chips and creamy peppercorn sauce – and it’s easy to see why this is a favourite with Jayz already regular customers. The Salmon was also delicious, and the Crispy Poached Egg (my first time trying this) was a huge hit, despite being notoriously difficult to get just right we were told, which it was…, served with salad and a prawn toast crouton. There was a bit of debate about what to choose for dessert – with both classic options and more adventurous choice. In the
end, we decided on the Baked Lemon Cheesecake, served with a truly amazing ginger cream and brandy snap, and the Chocolate Fondant, presented beautifully with raspberry sauce and toffee glaze. We savoured our desserts with a Cappuccino and as we left, realised we had managed to completely forget the dreary, rainy weather outside…just what we were hoping to do.

Walk the Red Shoe path at Tramway
TRAMWAY has announced its first ever winter show inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s classic dark folk tale ‘The Red Shoes’. Created and performed by Glasgow based singer, dancer and performer Judith Williams, with support from her forest and city friends, Red Shoes will honour winter in a non-commercial way allowing non-religious and diverse
cultures to connect with a ‘Christmas’ event. Red Shoes follows Judy Two Shoes on her journey as she explores the divide between duty and instinct; represented by the city and the forest. Told through live music, singing and visual theatre, this is a completely new piece of cross-art form theatre for all the family. Judith Williams said; “Audience
engagement is crucial to create a true, lasting and genuine connection between Judy Two Shoes and our young audience, so the story lives between us. We are sharing time and space in winter to open our hearts and soothe our minds. Make sure you talk to your energy supplier about your own home and circumstances. 3. Avoid ‘half load’ options on dishwashers and washing machines - they still use almost as much of the energy, water and detergent as a full
load. It’s always best to do a full load instead. 4. Think about your boiler – make sure it is as efficient as it can be. If your boiler is 15 years old or more it might be time for a replacement. Boilers account for around 55% of what you spend in a year on energy bills, so it’s worth doing if you need to. 5. Don’t block your radiators or heaters - Make sure your radiators and heaters are not blocked by furniture or covered by curtains. Health project tests impact of better physical education THE youngest children at seven South Lanarkshire primaries are taking part in a major research programme that could provide clear evidence on ways to improve the health and wellbeing of Scotland's children through better quality physical education.
South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture in collaboration with the Council, NHS Lanarkshire, University of Glasgow and University of the West of Scotland has developed the Connections Pilot that will ensure children receive two hours of quality physical education each week. The effect of this on their health and wellbeing is being tested by researchers from the West of Scotland University's Institute of Clinical Exercise and Health. Roisin Lochrin-Hopkins, a business development officer with SLLCs Sport and Physical Activity Department said: "Primary aged pupils get PE from their class teachers and we know that many class teachers are not confident about delivering PE sessions. Over the past 12 months, teachers have worked closely with physical education lecturers from the University of Glasgow and others to develop a resource pack comprising of 50 cards that set out ways to improve children's sensory motor and fundamental movement skills. This has been backed up with two sessions of in-service training on how to deliver the programme for class teachers in the pilot schools. (Full details of the Resource Packs are included in the note to editors.) Researchers from the West of Scotland University's Institute of Clinical Exercise and Health Science will now be testing the effects of the programme on the children's health, having collected a variety of data from the children before the programme got underway. Information meetings have been held with parents in all schools except Glenlee where the meeting are taking place shortly. The programme will also check whether pupils taking part in the pilot have been encouraged to engage in more physical activity out with school hours, for example through local sports clubs and centres.
Schools taking part in the Connections Pilot are Spittal and St Mark's Primaries in Rutherglen, St Elizabeth's and Glenlee in Hamilton, Maxwellton in East Kilbride, St Athanasius in Carluke and Lanark Primary. Two schools that are not participating in the pilot will provide researchers with a control group for comparison. Theresa Campbell of the University of Glasgow said: “We are delighted to join the group of partners in this unique project. When writing the resource packs, we wanted to not only provide activity ideas for the teachers to use with the pupils, but more importantly we wanted to be able to help teachers deliver the activities in a way that really emphasised the scope for important physical, social, emotional and cognitive learning to take place. “We have done this through use of colour coded thought bubbles on the cards that highlight important points to emphasise as they are working with the children. I see it as our equivalent of being able to have a conversation with the teachers about the children's learning as they are delivering the activities. “Our hope is that these cards will act as a catalyst for teachers to seek out other ideas to add to the sessions. Teachers are very imaginative in their approaches to the curriculum in a huge range of areas and I am confident that they will be able to take what we have provided for physical education and enrich it through adding their own ideas and certainly their own particular personalities and style to how the programme is delivered.” And Dr Duncan Buchan of the Institute of Clinical Exercise and Health Science at the University of the West of Scotland added: “We are very pleased to be playing a key role in this research. The health and fitness of school children has never been more important and we hope that this research will provide fitness strategies that can be implemented during school hours to improve the future fitness of Scotland's school children.”
Landmark for Tesco Bank Football Challenge SCOTTISH FA youth ambassador David Weir announced that the Tesco Bank Football Challenge has reached its four-year target, of getting 72,000 children active, six months ahead of schedule. The Tesco Bank Football Challenge is a four-year community programme run in partnership with the Scottish FA. The project introduces football to Primary Two and Primary Three children (six to eight years old) across Scotland to help get them engaged in a healthy and active lifestyle. Children participate in a six week block of football coaching with qualified Scottish FA coaches, before participating in regional festivals across the country, many of which are held at high profile venues. A national festival at Hampden Park brings the
school year of football to a memorable close. Over 3,000 teachers and volunteers have also been engaged in in-service training, exceeding the initial target and allowing the programme to continue in schools, resulting in a rise in grassroots football clubs throughout Scotland. Former Rangers, Everton, Hearts and Falkirk defender David Weir said: “The latest participation figures show that the Tesco Bank Football Challenge continues to excel and now over 72,000 children have benefited from this great programme. Encouraging children to keep fit and healthy within a fun environment is key to making sure that these habits are continued into adulthood.” Jim Fleeting, Scottish FA head of
football development, said: “The Tesco Bank Football Challenge is one of the key programmes into the Scottish FA’s National Player Pathway and hopefully it will send them in the right direction in life and create a real love for the game along the way.” Adele Mills, community investment manager at Tesco Bank, added: “At Tesco Bank we have created a meaningful and lasting partnership with the Scottish FA, and today demonstrates that the children receive real benefits whilst enjoying themselves. We aim to use our scale for good through the Challenge – it not only helps children to be healthy and active, it also inspires confidence and self belief.”

ARSENAL TAKE WIN AGAINST CITY IN UWCL FIRST LEG IT was strong advantage to Arsenal as the Gunners defeated Glasgow City 3-0 in the first leg of the last 16 of the UEFA Women’s Champions League at The Hive, Barnet. It was always going to be difficult for the Scottish Champions, with Arsenal 17-1 favourites with the bookies before the match, and the former Champions League winners showed their quality throughout the game.
Captain Steph Houghton gave Arsenal the lead on 14 minutes when she headed home from close range after an Arsenal corner. Danielle Carter made it 2-0 for the home side just before the break. Arsenal were given a free chance to cross after a throw in and Carter turned and fired home from 5 yards out to give her side a two goal cushion at half time. Carter was on the score sheet again, less than 15 minutes after the re-start
as she headed into the back of the net from inside the 6 yard box after a long high ball to the back post was headed into the danger area by White. Commenting on the match, City Head Coach, Eddie Wolecki Black said, “Our plan was always to come here and try and keep the second leg alive.
