The Presence of Light

Sky and Light in the Texas Landscape November 19 - December 18, 2010 William Reaves Fine Art

The Presence of Light Sky and Light in the Texas Landscape

In The Presence of Light, William Reaves Fine Art goes “back to the basics” of traditional Lone Star painting, mounting an incredible visual survey that focuses on the treatment of 29. Salter, West Texas Morning, 2010 sky and light in the Texas landscape. The exhibition presents an elegant holiday selection of over 40 contemporary and vintage paintings, each emphasizing the quality and strength of Texas light and its majestic interplay with boundless Texas skies as defining elements of the Lone Star landscape. Those familiar with our state’s art history will know that Texas art was built upon a rich landscape painting tradition. Following in the 27. Lewis, Bringin’ It In, 2009

footsteps of earlier masters, such as Jose Arpa, Edward Eisenlohr, Julian Onderdonk and Frank Reaugh, Texas artists have continuously sought to interpret their visions of this vast and rugged landscape by accentuating brilliant light and luminous skies that characterize the region. Indeed, over the years, Texas artists have distinguished themselves through their abilities to utilize these natural assets of light and skies to project the latent energies, changing moods and subtle tones of the Texas countryside. The proof of their efforts is, as they say, “in the pudding”, with landscape subjects maintaining broad, popular appeal among all proud Texans. Little wonder that great renditions have been eagerly embraced and highly treasured by Texas collectors of the past and present day. This exhibition reinforces the pleasing and compelling nature of Texas landscape paintings. It reminds us also of the painterly skills and aesthetic acuity associated with great work of this nature. The show features a collection

of exemplary works executed over a span of about 60 years by some 28 of the state’s most accomplished artists in the genre. Viewers will find vintage works by Texas notables such as Emma Richardson 14. Gabriel, Neighborhood Sky 3, 2010 Cherry, Fred Darge, Don Edelman, Henri Gadbois, Bill Hoey, Earl Staley, Richard Stout and Harry Worthman; alongside stellar examples by our present stable of contemporary Texas regionalists such as Randy Bacon, Margie Crisp, Robert Harrison, William Montgomery and Noe Perez. Through this exhibition, the gallery takes great pleasure in introducing works by several significant Texas artists who may be “new” to our WRFA patrons. To this end, we urge you to give special attention to the dramatic West Texas panoramas of Fort Worth’s Pat Gabriel, the 38. Stevens, 89-052 & 90-026, 2005 fabulous agricultural landscapes of Lubbock artist Laura Lynn Lewis, the exquisite pastels of Round Rock’s Jeri Salter, and the remarkable waterfowl landscapes of Debbie Stevens of Cypress, Texas.

These paintings will be on view throughout the holiday season, and we regard this exhibition as a perfect gift for our Texas collectors – an artful encounter completely consistent with the spirit of the season. Patrons of this show experience a special cacophony of great Texas imagery, all of which can’t help but remind us of the natural blessings surrounding us on a daily basis, and the virtues which we derive from Texas art and artists. Please join us in celebrating this and more in The Presence of Light, and have a wonderful holiday season!

-Bill Reaves, Sarah Beth Wilson and Leslie Thompson
