Upcoming Events On View: September 10—October 15, 2022
Texas Emerging is co-curated by visual artist Jonathan Paul Jackson with videography by Marc Newsome. In the corresponding videos, Jackson interviews each artist in order to capture their respective artistic processes beginning in their individual studios up until the moment of the groups’ final instillation. These “sneak-peak” videos provide viewers with the unique opportunity to learn more about each artist and their work. Jackson will also act as virtual tour guide, walking online viewers through the gallery.
Texas Emerging: Volume III will be on view for five weeks at Foltz Fine Art starting on September 10th, with opportunities to meet the artists and view works in-person by Forappointment.moreinformation, please visit FoltzGallery.com.

Featured Artists
Liz Gates is a Houston-based painter, sculptor, and mixed-media artist whose works are concerned with questions of gendered labor, self-manifestation, and feminist mother identity. Gates’ works are in dialogue with art historical representations of mother and child and are inspired by the many manifestations and dualities of motherhood. With her practice, Gates deconstructs and reimagines traditional objects and symbols associated with motherhood, such as diapers and baby shoes, in order to establish new narratives and associations for mother identity, the need for responsibility, and the desire for rebellion. Gates’ works serve as tangible and external representations of the internal processes that are integral in generating new representational space and modes of understanding. She received her MFA from the University of Houston in 2022. Gates’ work has previously been shown at The Blaffer Art Museum, Lawndale Center for the Arts, Hardy and Nance Studios, Spendora Gardens, Elgin Street Studios, and Third Space Gallery. Her work was featured in Go Forth From Houston: Women in the Arts Take Action, an exhibition held by the University of Houston that commemorated the 1977 National Women’s Conference.

Rachel Gardner (painting/sculpture)
Rachel Gardner is a Houston-based mixed-media artist that specializes sculpture and painting. She is best known for her life-size wolf sculptures. Her work has been shown in both museums and galleries, nationally and internationally. Locations of her shows and installations include Houston, Dallas, San Angelo, New York City, Washington D.C., Germany, and Greece. She received her BFA from Stephen F. Austin State University and her MFA from Houston Baptist University. For the past ten years, Rachel has devoted her art to the exploration of both the connection and disconnection to nature in our modern world.
Born in Nederland, Texas in 1986, Sirena LaBurn received her MFA in Painting from the New York Studio School (2014), and her BS in Arts Administration from Wagner College, New York (2009). Before beginning her MFA, LaBurn worked as the Collections Catalogue Assistant at the Stark Museum of Art, Orange, Texas, and was a resident at The Art Studio, Inc., Beaumont, Texas. From 2014-2017 she assisted Graham Nickson in his internationally recognized Drawing Marathons. From 2019-2021, LaBurn taught Drawing and Design courses as a Visiting Instructor and Adjunct Instructor at Lamar University, Beaumont, TX. She currently lives in Houston, Texas.
September 10 October 15, 2022
She also focuses heavily on the cycles of life through installations and scenes one may witness in our natural world. Growing up in suburbia, at young age, Rachel witnessed the depletion of our natural world for “progress" to take place. Though her primary medium is paper in both two and three dimensions, she often combines many materials on one surface. Her work is included in both public and private collections. Rachel is an assistant professor of sculpture at Houston Baptist University where she works with both undergraduate and graduate students. Her home and studio are located in the Houston Heights where she lives with her husband, daughter, and son.
Melinda Laszczynski (painting/sculpture)
Jasmine Zelaya is a multi- disciplinary first-generation Honduran-American artist. The daughter of parents who immigrated to the US in the early 1970’s, much of her work references the aesthetics of that period. Zelaya’s work explores themes of identity, assimilation and the brown body through a familial narrative rich with symbology. Zelaya received her BFA in Painting in 2006 from the Kansas City Art Institute. Based in Houston, her work has been featured on television media and in numerous publications, including as a cover artist for New American Paintings. Zelaya’s work was recently included in the 2021 Texas Biennial: A New Landscape, A Possible Horizon
Douglas is an abstract painter and G5 Collective co founder based in Houston, TX.
Douglas Welsh (painting)
Douglas Welsh received his BA from Bates College and is a current MFA candidate at University of Houston. He has participated in group exhibitions at Foltz Fine Art, Blaffer Art Museum, Anya Tish Gallery, Box 13, Hardy and Nance Studios, Elgin Street Studios, UH Third Space Gallery, Conroe Art League and Williams Tower Gallery.
Melinda Laszczynski is a Houston-based artist who is concerned with the materiality and physical characteristics of found and repurposed objects. Laszczynski’s concern with the experience of looking is reflected in the ways she treats objects, such as found lenticular prints, by adding paint to the prints reflective and multifocal surface. Like the lenticular print, much of Laszczynski’s work becomes figurative by referencing the body or reflection of the viewer. Laszczynski’s studio is filled with materials she considers “magical”, and her studio practice is self-described as “playful, peaceful, and unapologetically girly.” Nevertheless, Laszczynski remains a formalist at heart and demonstrates a commitment to artistic elements such as line, shape, color, and form throughout her body of work.

Deconstructing and re imagining symbols of motherhood, the navigation of tension between competing forces anchors my process. Through repetition, rearrangement, and reinvention, I’m exploring the dichotomy between parenthood and individualism, as well as the tension between the need for responsibility and the desire for rebellion. My practice is a conjuring of the internal processes that are imperative in severing old identities so as to create space for new understandings. The resulting body of work centers around questions of gendered labor, feminist mother identity, and self-manifestation.

Gates’works are in dialogue with art historical representations of mother and child and are inspired by the many manifestations and dualities of motherhood. With her practice, Gates deconstructs and reimagines traditional objects and symbols associated with motherhood, such as diapers and baby shoes, in order to establish new narratives and associations for mother identity, the need for responsibility, and the desire for rebellion. Gates’works serve as tangible and external representations of the internal processes that are integral in generating new representationalspaceandmodesofunderstanding.

Melinda Laszczynski is a Houston-based artist who is concerned with the materiality and physical characteristics of foundandrepurposedobjects. Laszczynski’sconcernwiththeexperienceoflookingisreflectedinthewaysshetreats objects, suchas found lenticular prints, by adding paint to the prints reflective and multifocal surface. Like the lenticular print, much ofLaszczynski’sworkbecomesfigurativebyreferencingthebodyorreflectionoftheviewer. Laszczynski’sstudioisfilledwithmaterials sheconsiders“magical” andherstudiopracticeisself-describedas “playful, peaceful, andunapologeticallygirly.”Nevertheless, Laszczynski remains a formalist at heart and demonstrates a commitment to artistic elements such as line, shape, color, andformthroughoutherbodyofwork.

ARTISTSTATEMENT
I have struggled with identity since childhood. At an early age, I confronted my ethnic identity, later my gender identity and then my identity as a Texan. Often, my experience was being other: brown when everyone else was white; masculine when the accepted ideal was feminine; Texan when everyone else was New Yorker or European. Stereotypes and value judgements were projected onto to me from many fronts. I grappled, sometimes resigned, sometimes subverted, and finally rejected the thoughts of others so often imposed on my being.
Primarily through oil paintings, my studio practice interrogates American myths. I question the creation, adoption, and use of imagery intrinsically linked to the construction of America as it is imagined today. The resulting paintings attempt to reflect my personal experiences, as well as my historical investigations to unearth and represent personal experiences, meanings, and identities that challenge predominant narratives of America.
2143Westheimer|Houston,TX77098|713.521.7500|www.foltzgallery.com
I eventually found solace in the idea that the one identity I could safely claim, the identity of which I am “enough," is American. I began a fraught journey to understand the histories, symbols, and cultural myths of the United States of America. Fascinated with imagery associated with the American West, especially the imagery that so often is interpreted as defining American values and identity, I began to watch classic Western films and read Western novels, and coupled these colonial cultural myths I discovered to historical readings.

My recent work is in direct response to the things on my mind at present, mainly the injustices of our flawed systems and the oppression and murders of BIPOC. While working with silver fringe on recent video projections, I was reminded of the silver heating blankets used in detention centers. This inexpensive material at first seems celebratory, but in fact has much heavier connotations. It is my hope to honor the lives of those affected and lost, and as the daughter of immigrants to bring awareness to those less visible.

My work is informed by my experience as a first generation, LatinX artist. Through portraiture and the language of paint, my work explores themes of identity. At once painterly and glittery, these busy surfaces distract from underlying tensions and the gaze of my subjects.

Floral elements are utilized as graphic representations of not only a familial narrative, but also the contrast of the natural and artificial world. Lush flowers, vines and patterns emerge in order to immerse the subject and capture the viewer’s attention. The subjects are at once disengaged while others display various degrees of intimacy. The women are depicted as both virtuous and erotic vessels, and draws references from Bernini’s “The Ecstasy of St. Teresa.” The distinction of emotions is convoluted. There is at once a sense of rapture blurred with anguish. The duality of these themes, are as much relevant today as they were during the 17th century.
