The Narrative in Art: Another Chapter in Texas Art Saga Texas has a long-standing tradition of story-telling, and especially a fascination with the mythic folklore of the Lone Star State. This rich story telling tradition, with a legacy of grand Texas tales partly rooted in both myth and cultural history, has inspired generations of Texas artists to create their own stories on canvas, generating painted narratives which often take the viewer beyond reality and into a surrealistic or fantastical world in art. In both of our exhibitions this month, William Reaves Fine Art presents viewers with a fascinating collection that focuses on such narrative in Texas art.

William Young, all long-standing notables in the Texas art world. We bring a selection of their work together for the first time in a three-man show, showcasing their highly original approaches to creating a story in art. We continue the exhibition theme in the accompanying show in the Alcove entitled Short Stories: Texas Narratives Continued, featuring an intimate selection of works by nationally renowned printmaker Ron Adams and Texas/Connecticut artist Robert Morris. All of these artists create ingenious and impeccable narratives, skillfully incorporating into their work 12. Edelman, Antique Roadshow with Grasshopper & Off-Road Roadrunner characters and scenarios which engage Texas Natives – Texas Narratives the viewer and encourage audiences to features the work of Don Edelman, Harvey Johnson, and contemplate their own story line.

Texas native Don Edelman received his M.F.A ers, not easily seen in the work, but vital characters in from the University of Illinois, Champaignthe unfolding narrative. Edelman’s 1951 Urbana in 1952, and moved to Houston painting entitled MFA Student’s Basement in 1963. After working in various fields, Apartment, Champaign-Urbana similarly Edelman pursued his career as a full-time inspires viewers to write their own story in artist by the mid 1970s. Edelman’s work his depiction of an ordinary, mid-century can be characterized as a whimsical view kitchen interior where the remnants and of reality, depicting seemingly mundane movements of an unknown, absent charobjects and scenes in a manner that alacter are the main focus. Who lives in this ludes to a story and certain theatricality. basement apartment? Where did they go? His titles support the jovial imagery of his work, encouraging viewers to construct Artist Harvey Johnson, a Port playful scenarios. Works such as his 2003 Arthur, Texas native, is a significant player painting entitled Antique Roadshow with in the Texas art scene. Johnson is a forGrasshopper & Off-Road Roadrunner apmer student and long-time colleague pear to be an ordinary depiction of the of John Biggers, graduating from Texas remnants of a rustic Texas landscape, but 24. Johnson, “Eye on the Sparrow” Southern University in 1971 with his B.A. upon closer viewing it is obvious that there and continuing his studies at Washington is more at play than meets the eye. Edelman hints in his State University in Pullman where he received his M.F.A. title that the grasshopper and roadrunner are key playin 1973. Johnson now lives in Houston, where he led a

distinguished career as professor of art at Texas Southern University and currently works as a full time artist. Johnson’s art focuses on the history, spirituality, and folklore dominant in African-American culture. Works such as Johnson’s 2009 painting entitled “Eye on the Sparrow” incorporate AfricanAmerican imagery and symbology. Johnson’s 2011 painting entitled The Bell Done Ring, Lift Every Voice and Sing is similarly rich in narrative elements. All of his works combine a cast of intriguing characters, accompanied by objects and symbolic imagery significant to African-American heritage.

was a student of Alexandre Hogue in the 1940s. Both Hogue and Nunn are recognized for their regionalist landscapes which often incorporate pictorial elements that portray a narrative quality in their work. Similarly, Young’s art shows an emphasis on physical elements combined with an odd assortment of images, achieving a certain surrealistic, mystical quality. His 2005 painting entitled A Tomato as the Sun appears to be painted in a typical landscape tradition, but upon further scrutiny, one discovers that the blazing red sun in the sky is actually a robust and vibrant tomato. In his 2010 work entitled Pandora’s Box, Young paints his inter33. Young, A Tomato as the Sun While Johnson’s images are pretation of the Greek myth of Pandora, using grounded in historical narratives, William Young depicts his own symbolic language to create a new version of a more fantastical, surreal realm. Young grew up in an this classic tale. He creates a composition that inspires artist family, studying with his father Ancel Nunn who viewers to remove themselves from reality and enter his

artistic dream world, where ordinary objects and attributes are combined to incite intrigue and narrative. In Short Stories: Texas Narratives Continued, the selection of Ron Adams’ prints on view show his focus on African-American subjects and stories. Similar to Johnson, Adams often conveys a narrative in his work, as seen in his 1996 print entitled Neptune Washington. The relationship between the strong character, scenery, and action in this lithograph entice viewers to ponder 5. Adams, Patience the developing story. In Adams print entitled Patience, from 1997, we see the artist focus on a single character study. His adept ability to capture the physiognomy of his characters encourages viewers to wonder who these people are and what their story must be.

Robert Morris develops a more light-hearted narrative through playful imagery, often juxtaposing humans in seemingly unbelievable scenarios in a realistic representation. In his painting entitled Floaters, from c. 1969, Morris paints a group of swimmers and divers jumping out of a helicopter in comical positions. The nonchalant helicopter pilot is oblivious to the figures that float around him, plunging towards the water below. Similarly, in the artist’s painting from c. 1970 entitled Fly Over II, a woman riding an ostrich smiles out towards the viewer, oblivious to the burning building and jet plane in the background. A tall, suited man walks towards her, also seemingly unaware of the disaster behind him. Such whimsical scenes encourage a jovial narrative, asking the viewer to determine the relationship between the characters and their fictional world. This exhibition demonstrates the many facets that compose the ever evolving story of Texas art, as well

as underscoring original and creative ways in which Texas artists have explored the narrative in their work. Whether through a surrealistic, fantastical world or by depicting past histories and stories these works encourage audiences to engage in the work of art and write their own story. The viewer is now a character and achieves an active role in deciphering the meaning of the work at hand. William Reaves Fine Art is pleased to present this fascinating exhibition, exploring an important chapter of Texas art. Please enjoy!
