Hello, I am Betty Holden Stike Congratulations on being published in Author Showcase! I was born in Brunswick County, North Carolina and lived in Bolivia and on Holden Beach with my family. My father was a farmer and owned property, and my mother a homemaker. I had five brothers and one sister! I grew up loving my family, loving to read, and loving school. I had my own library at home and our family always read together. I graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College in 1936 and received my teaching certificate. After that, I taught elementary school back home in Brunswick County. I married Mr. Ray L. Stike, and we had one son. We named him John, and he became a dentist in Wilmington. He was a joy to me all my life. After teaching elementary school for a while, I started working at Wilmington College. There, I showed future teachers how to teach reading, language arts, social studies and math. Wilmington College became the University of North Carolina Wilmington, and I served on the faculty there until I retired in 1984. In 1985, the Ed Lab was created so future teachers could learn to teach reading under the guidance of the literacy faculty. That first year, the Ed Lab had less than forty students! When the Ed Lab moved into the new Education Building in 2005, a brand new space with books, learning games and plenty of room to learn was named in my honor. The Betty Holden Stike Education Laboratory. I was so proud! Now, the Ed Lab has more than two hundred fifty students each year, all learning reading, writing, math, science, social studies and so many other things! I particularly love the Authors Showcase because you let us know that you and your family value reading and learning and supporting each other. ZOOM The Little Mermaid in a Different Point of View By Harper Hassett Tutor: Lillian Adams Ariel Sees the Ship and Rescues Prince Eric. Prince Eric sees Ariel while she is saving him. Ariel’s point of view. My name is Ariel and one day I was in my secret cave with my friends Flounder and Sebastian, and I saw this big shadow go over my cave, so I went out to check what it was. It was a ship and so I swam up to the deck and saw a Prince. I fell in love with him. Then a storm came. He fell out and I swam to rescue him. We finally made it to shore, and I sang a song to him. Just then he woke up and saw me. I heard voices and quickly got back to the water. The sisters were singing in the concert then they open the shell and I was not there. The Sisters’ Point of View. Hi. We are Ariel’s sisters, and we are here to tell you about the royal concert. So, it was the day of the royal concert, and we went on stage and started to sing and when it was time to open the shell for Ariel to come out, she wasn’t there! Everyone started talking loudly and dad yelled Ariel’s name. Betty Holden Stike Education Laboratory

The Dancer By Sabrina Tutor: Karson Allen

One day, Rose was in her room getting ready for dance class and she was about to get in the car for her mom to drive her to dance. When she arrived at her dance studio, there was a sign, and someone was trying to recruit dancers for the dance school. Rose decided that she wanted to try out to be on the competition team at the school of dance and goes to the tryouts. She made the team! Now, even though she has made it on the team, she is still worried she might not be good enough. The next day in class Rose thought everyone else could dance so much better than her so she said she could do many moves that she could not. Eventually, her teacher told her that she just must keep practicing and trying her best. Rose worked extremely hard to be a great dancer and to be able to do every new move that she tried. Years later, Rose became an incredibly famous dancer, and many people would even ask for her autograph! She danced in many shows, performances and plays. All she needed to do was believe in herself and practice, practice, practice.

The Anteater Adventures

A Collection of Short Stories about a Heart-Filled Anteater Friend By Harrison Hennessey Tutor/Editor: Madison Ayers In the beginning, there was an Anteater. He only let out a stink to protect himself. If you scared him, he would put a

STINK on you! Don’t come near him, beware! He likes to eat ants for fun.

JAZZ ANTEATER One time the Anteater was one of the finest jazz players. A person saw how good the Anteater was, so he joined him, and they played jazz. The Anteater played and he was so good that the Anteater was the best player in the world. PS he also knew the jazz dance it is the Grape Vine.

ART ANTEATER The Anteater loves to paint. He pretty much painted a portrait of himself and other animals too, it was his favorite thing of all time. He was just painting, he spent most of his time in his house. One day a boy came to his door and the Anteater wanted to give some of his paintings away, but the person said your paintings are awful. 65 years later, the boy sees the paintings up in the fanciest art museum in Paris. They were the most expensive paintings; nobody could buy them. The Anteater became famous, but he died seven years later. Now, everybody remembers him as a good painter, and everybody began to paint.

SOCCER ANTEATER Once there was this Anteater, he was the best soccer player in the world he won every single game for his team. He became the most famous soccer player in the world. Nobody can beat him, not even Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. He became famous and bought a mansion.

Inspired by the Anteater from “Eek You Reek!” By Jane Yolen & Heidi Stemple Illustrated by Eugenia Nobati

He was ready for his game. He was a striker, which is the best position. The Anteater’s team had to play the Snakes for the World Cup. The game was hard and went into overtime. The Anteater’s team finally won the World Cup after 3 hours. His team was so happy they started to cry, this was their first time ever winning the World Cup. This will be the day that the Anteater will always remember because of how hard his team played. Betty Holden Stike Education Laboratory

The Climb By Joel Agustin Tutor: Julie-Anna Bailey I once was in the forest. I came to a big, giant, tree that was loose and could fall at any moment! The tree was so tall that I had to find something to help me get on the tree! I came across the tallest ladder in the forest. I used this to climb up the tree. As I was climbing the tree, my foot slipped. I had to find something to put my foot on to stay on the ladder! I noticed that hanging beside me there was a branch. I went to grab the branch, but my arm wasn't long enough! I had to let go. Oh no! I fell down, down, down and SPLASH! I landed in a big puddle of mud. Better than the ground I say!

The Story of Wonderland By Mia Harker Tutor: Finley Baldwin Once upon a time in a land way up high, there was a sloth, but he was not a normal sloth. He had a unicorn horn and a star as a belly print. He also had a little friend named Pie. Pie was a pig angel. They lived in a land called Wonderland, but this was not just any land. Wonderland had storks, baby angels, shooting stars, and don't forget, famous sloth researchers Jonathan Pauli and Zachariah Peery. The sloth was a wonder sloth, and his name was Gus. Gus would rather have soda and donuts, but in Wonderland that food is healthy. One day, a baby angel secretly set a headband on Pie. Pie didn't notice until the baby angel shot down the heart on the head band. “He really doesn't act like an angel, does he?” said Pie. Gus answered, “Don't be so rude Pie!” Pie was annoyed and said, “I was just saying.” The baby angels would normally pick on Pie even though he was an angel too. Pie was an angel pig, so they picked on all the angel pigs because they believed they didn’t belong. Gus was his only friend and they met while Pie was running away from the little angels. Gus helped Pie hide from the little angels by pretending to decorate a tree and using Pie as an ornament. Now, every day, Gus has to pretend to use Pie as an ornament. Their friendship is magical because they can now fly, swim using lightning speed, and heal each other. That is the magic power of friendship.

Titans Attack Written by Eli King Support from Betsy Bertram It was a peaceful day in New Mexico. Then two titans attacked the city. Then the city was evacuated. The titans started attacking each other. As they fought they were destroying the city. Then the military started attacking the titans but the military couldn't pierce through their skin. So the military started to fall back. As the city was being evacuated, Godzilla shot a giant blast of nuclear power and it took out two evacuation emergency planes. It took out about 500 people when the blast hit. When the blast hit, more titans were attracted to the blast. Then the titans started attacking each other in an onslaught brawl. The reason they were fighting was because inside of the volcano there was not lava but there was five thousand gallons of nuclear power. If a titan got ahold of the nuclear power, they would be the ruler of all titans. Then one titan died getting clawed down by another titan. It was only down to five titans left and only one of them would get the power. But then something came swimming through the seas and jumped out with a big blast of water coming out. It was Meca Godzilla who was trying to get the nuclear power for himself. He was a manmade titan that was made in 1998 but in 2012 he went rogue and he escaped the facility where he was being kept. Meca Godzilla wanted the nuclear power in the volcano. He fought against the titans for the nuclear power. Meca Godzilla kept fighting the titans but then the military dropped a big, nuclear bomb and it took out four titans. Then there was only one titan named Godzilla fighting against Meca Godzilla. They started attacking each other with everything they had. But then, Godzilla shot a giant nuclear blast but Meca Godzilla did the same thing. The blasts collided and Godzilla’s blast hit Meca Godzilla. Meca Godzilla was starting to fall and Godzilla kept shooting blasts until Meca Godzilla exploded! Then Godzilla climbed up the volcano and he grabbed the nuclear power and he became the ruler of all titans. But the city had been destroyed. It took five years for the city to be rebuilt. And Godzilla became the protector of the city so that no other titans would ever attack. The End

My Favorite Memory By Berkeley Black Tutor: Chloe Bickers

My favorite memory is when I got my horse. When I first got her, my mom made me go to the barn and my trainer said, "Who’s that?", and I looked, but I thought it was a horse named Raven but it was actually my horse. My mom told me her name was Echo! I screamed and I almost fainted, I cried so, so much I was very shocked. When I got Echo I learned that she has a problem with her spine and because of this she may not be able to let anyone ride her in a few years. Every day that I ride Echo I feel special because I know she is feeling okay. I feel lucky to have Echo!

All about Ballet By Jing Wu Tutor: Molly Byrd

Where do you think ballet originated? France, right? Well, most people, even my ballet teacher thought that ballet started in France. But believe it or not, you’re wrong! Ballet started in Italy. Catherine de Medici of Italy brought ballet to France when she married the French King Henry II. This is when the costumes and dance moves “came to life” in France! Now let’s learn more about the costumes and dance moves of ballet. Modern ballet costumes can be long or short, or they can fan out to look more like a certain character, for example, the swan in Swan Lake. The ballet costumes in the 18th century were super big, super heavy, and had a lot of fabric. The costumes usually had many colors. You may be thinking, "If the costumes are big and heavy, won’t they get in the way or make the dancers tired while performing?" Yes! You’re so right! However, no one knows for sure how the dancers solved the big, heavy costume problem. Well, as time went on, people discovered a new way to make ballet costumes lighter and easier for dancers to do leg movements. Oh, and, speaking of leg movements, now let’s learn more about the ballet dance moves. The dance moves used to take a long time to perform, but now, they are shortened and much quicker. All of the on-barre dance moves have a pattern, usually, it goes by, front, side, back, and then side again. This makes it very even and a lot more beautiful. The arch and pointed toes, the beautiful ballet hands, and the stunning dancers all are the “pretty part” of ballet. Oh, and, speaking of amazing dancers, some of the most famous ballerinas in the world are Maria Tallchief, Anna Pavlova, and Misty Copeland. Ballet focuses on beauty, emotion, and perfection. Ballet is gigantic. The moves, the history, the music, the costumes...these are reasons why ballet is special. The big and interesting ballet world is waiting to be discovered, and there is so much more to learn. This is ballet.

The Hepai By Joel Ertzberger Tutor: Claire Canning Once upon a time, there lived a happy Hepai named Bobbet. The Hepai was happy to be a house pet and lay around in their yard all day. The Hepai loved to lick his large, furry wings. The fur on his wings was so thick that he could not fly more than a few feet off of the ground, so he flapped around the yard jumping and flying only a small distance. However, Bobbet's brother, Sckwag, wanted freedom. One day, Sckwag ran really fast and used his wings to propel him over the fence of their backyard. Sckwag was free to do whatever he wanted to! He stretched his legs and began to run as fast as he could and ran all the way up a cliff and jumped off, flapping his wings to soften his landing. He almost didn't make it to the other side and there were busy cars at the bottom! Thankfully, Sckwag made it to the other side and decided to go back HOME.

Bigger Beyblades By Charlie Watts Tutor: Abigail Carroll

Beyblades should be made bigger. Beyblades should be made bigger because it will give them more power. More power will help Beyblades battle better. Also, Beyblades should be made bigger because they won't hurt as bad. If it is bigger, people would be able to see it easier, so they won't step on it. Lastly, Beyblades should be made bigger because it will help them spin better. It will give them more speed in the battles. These reasons are why I think Beyblades should be made bigger.

UP By Scarlet Dewan <3 Tutor: Kristen DuPont In the past there were dinosaurs they controlled fire, earth, water, and wind. This is a story about the most powerful dinosaur who could control the wind, her name is Jewell. She had a pet pterodactyl named Scarlet. There were other dinosaurs trying to steal their powers and those dinosaurs were bad. The other dinosaurs could not fly without the wind. So, they came together to steal the wind from Jewell. After they finished coming up with their plan, they all started heading up toward Mount Everest to steal the wind. Jewell heard the evil dinosaurs were going to try and steal the wind. Jewell told the wind to make a big snowball so when they climbed up the mountain, she could hit them with the snowball and knock them down the mountain. In case the snowball does not work Jewell decided to start climbing up the mountain. Then Scarlet watched the bad dinosaurs climb up the mountain and saw the snowball miss them. Scarlet had to go back and tell Jewell that she needed to get ready to fight. After a few hours of climbing, they all met at the top of the mountain ready to fight for the wind. They all started fighting. Then the wind started blowing and blowing and blowing until there was a tornado. The tornado Betty Holden Stike Education Laboratory

came and swirled them around and around until they all fell to the ground. After falling they all agreed to the wind helping them all fly. This is why we no longer see dinosaurs on the ground anymore.

A Snowy Tennessee Day By Haven Magnus Tutor: Whitney Durbin My family and I took a trip to our second house in Tennessee for Christmas. When we got there, snow was on the ground. We let our puppies, Alice and Scout, out to play and they loved it. They did not want to go inside unless we gave them a treat. It took a very long time to get them to go inside. The next day was Christmas and we opened up presents. I got Polly Pockets. One doll had a pineapple on her shirt and the other one had red hair. Those were my favorite dolls. It was still snowing so we set up a beautiful decoration outside, it was my favorite. It was a globe that had little bright lights that would shine up in the sky. It was as beautiful as the Northern Lights. Today was all about spending time with family. The day after Christmas my family and I played in the snow. We threw snowballs at each other. I would also bundle the snow into a ball and put it into the freezer. A few minutes later I went back and ate it. Sometimes, I would take the snow into the house, but my parents told me to take it back outside because it started to defrost. Water got all over the floor. One afternoon, we went to the Pancake Pantry to eat. I got pancakes that were called Bears in the Snow, I get it every time because I love it so much. The pancakes were shaped like bears and it had powdered sugar on top which looked like snow. It was really good. We went to the taffy store afterwards and watched taffy being made. We bought some and I ate a little bit in the car. My parents took the rest so that I could eat it for next time. One funny thing that had happened was when we found a tube. It was abandoned in the snow so we ended up taking it back to our house. We played with it and had so much fun. Somehow the tube ended up at our North Carolina house. This was the best trip ever to our Tennessee house. I had so much fun. I can’t wait to go back next Christmas and do it all over again.

Caiden’s Halloween Story By Caiden Black Tutor: Logan Fink

Caiden went to the most haunted house that all kids are scared of. He knocked on the door dressed up as a soccer player the door creaked when you opened it. He realized that it was an escape room that had haunted stuff in it. He was walking around searching for clues when he saw three locks on a door. He kept searching and finally found a clue by moving a statue that looked like a scarecrow an old-looking gold key dropped out of the ceiling. He used the key to unlock one lock on the door. The clue that came with it said, “To find the way out you have to look for something unusual”. Then Caiden looked around and found five dice that all had one dot on them. He moved all of them and found out that only one of the die had an extra dot on it. So then he pressed on the extra dot and a hatch opened up with a scary-looking zombie that popped out he jumped the zombie gave him another key and another clue. He unlocked one more lock and noticed he only had one more lock. He read the clue and the clue said, “If you wanna get out you have to find something you admire.” He looked around and found a Messi picture that was huge. He looked around the picture but he couldn’t find anything he looked straight at it and saw that the soccer ball that he was kicking had a button on it. He pressed the button and got the other key. He unlocked the last lock and opened the door and there was confetti everywhere when he walked outside of the house everyone congratulated him because he beat the highest record and was very brave.

Aquamarine By Seth Henzler Tutor: Mikayla Gibbs Once upon a time, there was a sea boy named Aquamarine. He was a sea merlin and sea merlins are very rare. He could survive on land and sea. He also had water powers which he commonly used. He could levitate the water, make a water tornado, and lift the seas. His greatest power is his ability to fly and control the water within a spinning vortex. He calls it airjitzu. He defeats bad guys underwater with his powers because no one else can. One legend says, there was a group of evil sea monsters who roamed the sea. They were the most powerful and feared bad guys. They lived in a scary sea fortress in the deepest, darkest part of the ocean. This was their hideout. They had plant and electricity powers. They were very wicked. They had a master that was even more evil than the rest of them. Her name was Lord Harumi. She was able to control the Earth elements of the sea. She could take the sand and create walls made out of coral. She was an orphan when she was young. Her parents left her in an orphanage, and she was alone. All of her years alone made her want revenge. What no one else knew (except Lord Harumi) was that Aquamarine and Lord Harumi were siblings. Lord Harumi’s plot was to make a person that was even more evil than her. She would crown him General of the Oceans. She needed three sea creatures in order to make him. The sea creatures were named The Sea Creature of the Deception, The Sea Creature of Revenge, and The Sea Creature of Hatred. She had already stolen the first two creatures but needed Aquamarine’s help to get the Sea Creature of Hatred. She needed the blood of both her and Aquamarine so she

could touch the white fire, to get the third creature. The white fire was protecting the nest of the Sea Creature of Hatred. He was the strongest creature out of all three. Aquamarine found a base that was actually Lord Harumi’s hideout, but he didn’t know this yet. He didn’t know Lord Harumi was his sister. He didn’t know Lord Harumi was evil. He didn’t even know she existed. He was very scared of the hideout because it had sculls, seaweed, and sharks all around it. He had a bad feeling about the base but felt like someone needed his help in there. He yelled, “Is anyone in there?” “Oh, yes! I need your help!” said a voice from inside the base. Aquamarine entered the base to find Lord Harumi. She welcomed him into her home, but he could see that she was desperate for his help. She introduced herself as Sea Princess Harumi, to hide her true identity. She told him that she had overheard bad guys saying that they were looking for a third sea creature for “The Desperate One”. What Aquamarine didn’t know is that Lord Harumi was “The Desperate One”. He only knew she needed a lot of help. On the way, they encountered many dangers. They faced several dangerous fishing boats and other sea creatures. They saw dragons from the Silver Realm and they even rescued one. Suddenly, Lord Harumi and Aquamarine fell down a waterfall. They were terrified, but then realized where they were actually at. They looked up at the crystals in front of them and saw that the dragon led them to the Nest of White Fire. The dragon left to return to Aquamarine’s home, where he would be safe.

Betty Holden Stike Education Laboratory

Watson College of Education UNC Wilmington

They entered the Temple of the Nest of White Fire. Aquamarine noticed there were traps on the floor and told Harumi to beware of them because they would close the entrance. However, Lord Harumi purposefully stepped on one to trap them in. Aquamarine turned around and said, “What just happened?” “Oops!” said Harumi, “I think I stepped on one by accident.” “Well, I guess we will have to find another way out…” sighed Aquamarine. Before them was the actual Nest of White Fire. The Nest was flaming hot and so shiny and bright it almost blinded them. It looked like the sun. “I think we both need to have the same blood type to get past the fire”, said Aquamarine. Harumi said, “Well, you have blood 5 and I have blood 5.” “How do you know my blood type?” said Aquamarine, confused. “I just guessed it!” said Harumi. Aquamarine was very suspicious but didn’t think too much of this weird encounter. Harumi sighed with relief because she had almost given away her identity. She told Aquamarine the only way to get to the sea creature was by both of them touching the white fire. Both Aquamarine and Lord Harumi touched the very bright, white fire and closed their eyes. As soon as they knew it, they had obtained and tamed the Sea Creature of Hatred. They then began to make their way home with the sea creature. “Wait- I’m still confused. How were you so certain of my blood type?” questioned Aquamarine.

Betty Holden Stike Education Laboratory

Watson College of Education UNC Wilmington

“Oh, just a little bit of smartitude!” said Harumi. Aquamarine was very confused, but as they continued to ride home, he figured it out and exclaimed, “I think YOU are The Desperate One! You knew my blood type and that makes a lot of sense.” “Yes, I am The Desperate One. I was just hiding it and you didn’t figure it out! So, my whole plan worked. Now I have all three sea creatures and can make The General of the Oceans, the most evil and powerful villain of all times! Mwahahahaha!!! You didn’t even realize it all along. Oh- and by the way, you are also my brother!” Then, the most epic battle of all the oceans began. No one knew who was going to win. Finally, Lord Harumi’s bishops arrived. Aquamarine used his airjitzu to fly on top of them and attack them, but he missed. Lord Harumi made her fort out of coral. Then, Aquamarine levitated the water to make his own fort. He made splash cannons and she made cannons that shot corals. They went back and forth at each other for hours, until they couldn’t anymore. They finally retreated. Then a wind started to blow. Harumi took out a piece of her hair, she took a piece of Aquamarine’s hair (that she stole earlier), and she took a piece of her bishop’s hair. She was now able to make the General of the Oceans and the true War of the Oceans began. To be continued…

My Halloween By Ingrid Hawthorne Tutor: Emma Hicks This year Halloween is going to be different because I am dyeing my hair black and white. My dad is dying my hair and I’m so excited. I am dressing up as Cruella D. and my mom and dog are being a Dalmatian. He is a white poodle, and I am going to help dye his fur! My dog has a really fluffy tail, so welcome to the new addition Dalmatian! Before going trick or treating, I set up the table with mini pumpkins and ghost. Whenever we go trick or treating, we find a place to meet up with my German friend. She makes me laugh until almost fall over. We filled up out buckets with candy! My favorite candy I got was this HUGE Twix bar. We walked so much, my legs were sore before I even got home. After we trick or treat, my mom and brother are always the first ones to go to sleep. I put my candy away and decide to stay up and listen to music. Finally, I dosed off on my dad’s lap. The end.

Enter the Adventure: Book One By Lachlan Smith Tutor: Marissa Hortiz (Quick note: if you want to see what these Pokémon are, look them up! I used all real Pokémon names)

Hi, I'm ____. What do you think? I'm just going to tell you my name? Yeah right, I’m not dumb maybe later though. Right now anyway, I'm at school. My best friend, Kai, and I are eating lunch. We talk about how we both wish we had the new Pokémon game. Although we both know basically nothing about Pokémon. “It looks epic!” Kai exclaims. “I know right?” I said back to him. Almost everyone in school has the new game. “My mom might get it for me for my birthday!” he remarks. I think about the new game for a minute. The epic graphics, the new Pokémon, and most of all, new Legendarys. “If I had it, I would totally pick a Squirtle,” Kai tells me. “No way! Charmander is obviously better.” I told him. The truth is they're all basically the same. When lunch is over, we say our goodbyes and walk different ways. But when I walk home the vacant lot has a house in it! Better yet, a garage sale!!! But that doesn't make sense. Because they JUST got here. Also how can a house come in less than two seconds? Never mind that! I check it all out, when I walk up to the man he tells me “anything you want is free. No one’s been buying from me all day.” I'm pumped, anything I want!?! For free!! I immediately start looking around and I see lots of used junk. But then, I saw what could have possibly been the best thing I saw all day. The new Pokémon game. I dash for it but the man says, “Oh I wouldn't take that if I were you.” My face dropped, “But I thought you said I could take anything?” The man said “I never said you couldn’t, but that is only for those who love and crave adventure. It is also an ancient relic. It most likely won't work.” An ancient relic? This came out five weeks ago. “Um sir, I think you got it mixed up.” But when I turned back he was gone. I took the game and went home wondering to myself. He probably just wanted to go to the bathroom or do something like that. When I got home, I dashed for my 3ds. “Mom! Can I use your Phone? I want to call Kai.”

Later that night, Kai came over faster than a cheetah. “Where is it?” he asked eagerly. Like he WAS a cheetah waiting to eat prey. “Right here.” I showed him it. He beamed at it. “So? Can we play?” “Of course!” I say. I boot up the game and it works! But five seconds later the game died out. “Man! That guy wasn’t lying!” I say. “Yeah I know, what guy?” He asked. “Oh just some guy selling stuff,” I told him. “Ok, can your mom make spam musubi for dinner?” Kai is crazy about spam. I don't mind the stuff but man, he will eat a whole can if you cook it for him. “Mom! Do you have any spam?” there was no response “MOM!!!” I yell louder. Kai says, “Bro, just go look for her” I got embarrassed. “Yeah I'll go do that.” I turn around and the first thing I notice is that this is not my house. “Where are we?” Kai says. “I have no idea.” I told him. We went downstairs and there was a TV (which there was not in my house) and a kitchen. Kai and I are so confused we can barely speak. “We should go outside.” Kai suggested. “I'm not sure that's a good idea. Hey, what if when we were sitting we got kidnaped?” I say. “There's no way we got kidnaped we would have felt it-” We hear a giant roar outside. “WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOING ON?!?” I scream. We ran outside and saw what I thought was only in dreams. A Pokémon. It was huge and looked like a dinosaur. “KIA, RUN BACK INSIDE!!!” but it was too late. Kia was lying on the ground fainted. I thought that this was a dream. The dino stepped on my foot. THIS IS NOT A DREAM! I look down at my toe. It was most likely broken. I fainted because of the pain. I thought to myself what if this had never happened? Would I be safe or not- OUCH! I wake up when a man with hazel eyes, a goatee and glasses looks down at me. I'm on a bed with casts all over me. “WHO ARE YOU?” I scream. I immediately regret doing so, it hurt a lot. “Calm down little guy. I'm Professor Zander. But you can call me Thuja.” He reassured me. I didn't really believe his name was Thuja but whatever. “What are you doing to me?” I asked.

Betty Holden Stike Education Laboratory

Watson College of Education UNC Wilmington

“Well you got in a fight with a Tyrantrum. A real nasty Pokémon and very aggressive. I found you knocked out on the ground. Luckily I was in the area so me and my Incineroar defeated that beast.” he said. What about Kia? Was he okay? “Did you see anyone else, other than me?” I asked nervously. “No, I didn't see anyone other than you.” He said. My heart dropped. Was Kia dead? “In this world, you need to be ready for a fight. So I have my own Pokémon for you to use in battle.” I thought about this. He might be right, if I had a Pokémon I could have defended myself and Kai from that beast. “Okay, where are the Pokémon?” I asked. “Here they are,” he said. A computer was above the three Pokémon. The Pokémon were in Pokeballs. There was Squirtle, the water type Pokémon. Charmander, the fire type Pokémon. And Bulbasaur, the grass type Pokémon. I thought about it and to me water and grass aren’t very strong. I chose Charmander because let's face it, water and grass are things we deal with almost every single day, but fire. That's a whole ‘nother story. I threw the Pokeball and out came a fire lizard. He looked fierce but kinda cute. Right after I picked it up, two people came running in. “I CALL DIBS ON SQUIRTLE” one of them shouted. “BULBASAURS MINE,” the other one said. “Calm down Blue,” said Thuja. Blue? What kind of name is that? What's the other one's name, Yellow? “What?! So unfair, tell Red that” Blue said. Not gonna ask about that name. I say bye to Thuja and head outside. I did not want to be a part of that. “Now I can start my very own Pokémon adventure!” I say out loud. Then I realized how cringy that sounded. I only know Pokémon a little bit from the kids at school. I've never played the game before though. I thought for a minute about what I should do. I can't decide, so I just start walking forward. Thuja's house is on the beach, so I start heading down to the water. Thinking about how much that house would cost. It was a small shabby shack. I start feeling the water. It was as warm as my grandma's pie. Mmm just thinking about it makes me hungry. Speaking of, what am I gonna eat? I look around and see a small berry bush next to the professor's house. I hope he won't mind. I look at all the berries. I see in the window Thuja is looking at me. I point to the bush then my mouth. He nods. YES I can eat these! I look back inside and Red and Blue are battling. Wow I wanna be in on that! Maybe someday. Anyway I turned back to the berries. I chose some of the blue ones. Mmm they are super sweet and a little sour. I make sure to grab some more and put them in my backpack. Then the green one. Tart and sour, not my favorite. And then the red ones. These looked like mace spike balls. And did not look very good at all. I picked one up nervously and took a bite. HOT!!! These are way hotter than grandma's pie. I drop it on the floor and rush to the ocean for some water. Ahhhh it feels so much better. Then Red and Blue came outside. Betty Holden Stike Education Laboratory

Watson College of Education UNC Wilmington

“What are you doing?” Red asked. It just occurred to me how weird I look right now. “Uh, nodin.” I say, my tongue is still in the water. “Well whatever.” Blue said. “Smell ya later.” Blue dashed off. Smell ya later? Who says that? Maybe I'm not super cringy in this world. I'm still at the shoreside when a shark jumps out of the water. “AAA HELP!” I yell. Thuja and Red are still inside. Wait a minute, I have a Pokémon! I threw out Charmander and said, “Use uh, Scratch?” Charmander scratched that thing so hard. Wow, maybe he knows more moves. I heard Ember and Flamethrower in school a few times. “Use Flamethrower!” He does nothing. “Use ember?” He shoots a small flame out of his mouth. Okay great that worked. The shark Pokémon uses some type of water move. And then I realized that water puts out fire. Just as I was thinking that Charmander was on the sand knocked out. I ran as fast as I could with him in my arms. Until I saw a small town with a red building. YES! I thought about it and the kids at school said Pokémon centers will heal your Pokémon! I run in and give the lady my Pokémon. “Oh no.” the lady said. “What's wrong?” I asked her. “Your Pokémon’s tail has been put out.” she said. “But I can heal it,” she says. I sighed in relief. “Thank you.” I said back to her. She hands me my Pokémon and I walk out of the building. I wander around and Thuja comes to me quickly. “I forgot to give you something.” He pants. He hands me Pokeballs and a red device. “This is a PokeDex. If you scan a Pokémon it will tell you what it is,” he tells me. Awesome! I take the Dex and the Pokeballs and say, “Bye professor!” He waves bye and heads back to his shack. I go into the grass and think for a minute. If I could have caught that Pokémon dino, I would be super strong! Thing is, I have no idea where that is. I wonder if I could have caught it with one of the Pokeballs. I start thinking about more Pokémon. Maybe I can catch a Steelix. That would be nice. Big strong Pokémon being able to beat anyone. Anyway, I'm still wondering if Kia might be out there. Alright enough thinking about that. I'm heading to the wild area Thuja told me to go to! He said I can catch Pokémon there! I walk to the wild area and see Blue catching a Pokémon. I scan the Pokémon with my PokeDex. Rattata, the rat Pokémon. Known for being one of the most basic Pokémon. Okay, he's getting a basic Pokémon. Oh, Reds over there with another Pokémon! I scan it. Caterpie, the worm Pokémon. Caterpie uses its mouth to shoot sting making the opponent weak. So Blue has a rat Pokémon and Red has a silly string worm. I hope I catch something a little stronger than that- next thing I Betty Holden Stike Education Laboratory

know, a Pokémon bumped into me. Excited, I scanned it with the PokeDex. Pidgey, the bird Pokémon. Pidgey can evolve two times. Even more excited, I threw out my Charmander. “Use Ember!” I say. Charmander uses Ember and attacks the Pidgey. The Pidgey uses Peck. Charmander looked just fine. Must have not been a very strong move. I threw the Pokeball at it and waited. Yes! It got caught! I now have a Pidgey! I walk away feeling proud of myself. Red challenges me and Blue to a battle! I accept eagerly. “Go Bulbasaur!” Red shouts. “I choose you, Squirtle!” Blue says. “Let's go, Charmander!” I say. The battles on. Reds Pokémon leads off with the move vine whip and attacks the Squirtle. “Nice Job Bulbasaur!” Red says with a smile. This isn't good. Reds Pokémon are strong. I tell my Charmander to use Ember on the Bulbasaur. It's super effective! Bulbasaur fainted. I did it! I beat Red! Alright it should be easy to beat Squirtle. He's low on health from Bulbasaur. “Squirtle use Water Gun!” Blue says. My Charmander falls to the ground in defeat. “Nooo!” I say in sadness. “Woo hoo! I did it! You guys stink at battling.” Blue remarks unbearably smug. Next time I'll get him. Red walks off not saying a word. “You just wait,” I told him and walked off. I can't believe that guy. Thinking he's the best. That's It! I know how to beat him! I need to get a Legendary Pokémon. How to get one though. Hmm maybe get one from a strong trainer? I need to find one first. Ok, that settles it, I'm going to find a strong trainer! I see a local trainer and walk up to her. “Excuse me Ma’am, do you know any strong trainers? One with legendaries?” I ask. “No, I'm afraid I don’t.” She replied. Man, I better ask someone else or maybe ask if there is a place where strong trainers hang out. I head into the town looking for maybe a sign for trainers or something. And then I saw it. And wowie it said what I wanted to hear. You know what it said? No you probably don't but man, that's a good sign. Very inspiring words. I could not even imagine my life before that sign. Just kidding, there was no sign. But, there was a small place with a sign saying “Trainer Club” and that was epic. So I went in and the man said, “Are you a noob trainer or a berserk trainer?” he said. Berserk trainer? What's that? I walked out of there wondering what that was. Anyway, I continue my quest to find a strong trainer. I saw a HUGE mountain with a building on top of it. It was snowing up there and looked very cold. I didn't see a way to get up though. There was no trolley or lift. Did you have to climb it? Just as I was thinking this Charmander popped out of his ball. “What's wrong?” I asked him. “Charmander char!” he replied. Wow, that didn’t tell me a lot. Betty Holden Stike Education Laboratory

Watson College of Education UNC Wilmington

Then he started glowing a purple blue and white glow. I ran away because I thought he was going to explode. Then I went back and saw he had evolved! I scanned him with the PokeDex and it said, Charmeleon, the hard core fire type Pokémon. And I'm not going to lie, he looked sick! I gave him a pet on the head and said, “Good work!” he smiled and started jumping up and down in excitement. Then my Pidgey came out and started to get jealous. He looked like he was flexing, and that was weird and funny. And then Pidgey started glowing! He evolved into what looked like teen Pidgey. In my opinion the Charmeleon looks cooler. I scanned the new Pidgey, and it said, Pidgeotto. This bird Pokémon has a serious attitude. It will attack anyone it's jealous of. I looked back and the Pidgeotto was pecking Charmeleon. “Stop!” I shout. “No need to fight guys.” The Pidgeotto stopped and looked up at me. “OTOO!” It said, Now I need to figure out how to get up this mountain- right when I thought that a girl about my age flew up the mountain on a dragon Pokémon. “Wow!” I said in awe. Then a boy came and threw out a bird Pokémon and rode it to the top too. And then it hit me. Pidgeotto could fly me up there! This was very smart of me. I threw out the Pidgeotto and flew up there. The wind felt so good. It's been very hot since I got here. That wind felt like when you're super sweaty and jump in a car blasting AC. When I got to the top of the mountain, I saw how far up I was. Also did I mention how I'm terrified of heights? The next thing I knew I was at the top of the mountain shivering. I wish I had some heat. And then it hit me again! My Charmeleon could warm me up! “Ch-charmeleon u-use em-ember.” I say weakly. And then bam I felt nice and toasty. I started looking around and saw tons of trainers with insane Pokémon. How were these people so strong? That girl from before came out with six Pokémon! Then I saw that boy from before talking with the girl. They must be friends. That's three times my Pokémon! And they all looked way stronger. Then I saw the building. It was like an ice dome, very intimidating. I walked up to the boy and asked, “Excuse me um do you know where the strong trainer is?” “THE strong trainer? There are TONS of strong trainers, kid.” he said. That didn't make sense since we were both kids. He looked like he was maybe eleven and I'm ten but were still both kids! I walked away and into the building. I saw two people guarding the door. “Do you have eight Gym badges?” he asked. Gym badges? “What's that?” I say. He frowned and didn't reply. Then red came on a dragon Pokémon that looked insanely strong. I scanned it and it said Dragonite the dragon Pokémon. Dragonite is known for being one of the strongest dragon types. He walked in with his hat down and showed them his Gym Badges. “How did you get those!?” I asked but he didn't respond. And he walked in the door, I wondered. How did he get all those strong Pokémon? I decided to go back down the mountain. I wasn't even close to being as strong as those people. When I was down, I go to a malasada shop. But here's where it gets REALLY freaky. Guess who I saw there? Red. “How are you here?!?” I asked. “What do you mean?” he answers. I explained to him about how I saw him up on the mountain. “No way! You're kidding!” He exclaimed.

“I'm not! It's the truth!” I told him. Then it just occurred to me. If I got into this universe so could other people! I said bye to red and then I rushed out of the malasada shop. I wanted to get more Pokémon to become stronger. And then I made what is possibly the best idea I've ever thought of. What if there-was-another-me-from-a-different-universe-who-could-then-give-me-verystrong-pokemon-and-I-could-become-one-of-the-top-trainers-out-there! But how would he get here? Hmm I got it maybe if I think about going back in time- ok this is a stretch. And then as I was thinking I felt a hand on my shoulder. And I made a sound like this: “AftafsgAfguaAAA!” I felt myself being pulled backwards. I still couldn't see the person. Then I'm pretty sure we went underground. “The Ghost in the Attic” By Zaida Welin Tutor: Katie Kelleher One cool fall night a young girl named Rose and all of her friends were walking along a dark lake by a forest, and suddenly discovered an old house with shingles, and pieces of rotting wood falling off of it. Just as Rose turned around to look at the house she heard a high pitched scream, quickly she turned back around to her friends but they were gone. In the corner of her eye she saw a light flicker from the circular window in the attic. Rose ran over to the house, she swung open the big, creaking French doors. She stepped in and called, “Hello?” it echoed right back. “Hello?” she called again, “is anyone here?” To her surprise she did not hear an echo back, she heard a deeper voice say, “Yes it’s me.” A candelabra lit behind her, she grabbed it and in a nervous but stern voice she said, “Show yourself.” She heard that high pitched scream again. Then, Rose felt a tap on her shoulder. Rose whipped around trying to figure out what had happened, then she saw an outline of a figure. “Hello Rose” the figure said, “Do you remember me? I am your father.” “That is impossible, my father died in a car crash when I was two.”

“Yes, I am a ghost.” The figure said, “It has been terribly hard watching you grow up without me there, but now we will be together forever.” Rose looked at the figure and said, “What do you mean? I can’t stay here.” “Oh yes you can, now that you are here you will never go back.” Rose looked down and realized that all she could see was the outline of her hands. She said harshly, “What did you do to me!” her father said, “I have turned you into a ghost.” Rose tried to run to the door but she could not open it. She was stuck there forever...

Lego Houses By Caleb Ramsey Tutor: Lauren Marion Korbyn, Ryan, and Marci were building Lego houses for three little pigs including a house made of straw, a house made of sticks, and a house made of bricks. Marci played the smallest pig, and she built the straw house, Korbyn played the middle pig, and he built the house made of sticks, and Ryan played the biggest pig and spent his time building the house made of bricks. They sorted the Legos into big bins based on their color. The three friends set aside yellow Legos for the straw house, brown Legos for the stick house, and red Legos for the brick house. They drew the pigs on paper, colored them pink and cut them out so they could put them in their Lego houses. The bin with the most Legos was the bin with the yellow Legos that was for the straw house. When time was up, the yellow house was the best-looking house. It had walls, a roof, and a yard. The stick house only had walls because Korbyn didn't have enough time to make the roof. Ryan, who made the brick house, only had time to build his walls as well. And then, they lined up the houses because they were playing the 3 little pigs with Legos!

We Are the Same By Kendra Hippolyte Tutor: Gabrielle Pepper One day Stella the flower woke up to a loud and windy storm. She was so scared she hid under her covers. The storm blew her petals away because it was so strong. She woke up and was sad to see her beautiful pink petals blown away. She went outside and saw Moon had also lost her white petals in the storm. So Stella went up to her and told her this is sad, but it will be okay. They started to spend more time together, until one day Stella woke up and saw pink. Then she was sad that she might lose her new friend Moon. She was excited to show Moon her petals had grown back, and Moon was happy for her, but sad that her white petals had not grown back yet. Dogs are the best! I think dogs are the best pets because they are very cute and funny. They can make you laugh anytime or any day. When you are sad they can cheer you up. When you’re angry they can calm you down. They have furry coats that keep them and you warm when cuddling.

Then Nathan, Max, Brayden, Paris and Isaiah got stuck in the I-pad as well. Then, the I-pad said "you have to complete this challenge or else you lose". Everyone was running to the exit and one of the players, Nathan, fell down. The mom was in the lead, she was about to make it until she slipped and she grabbed the edge of the exit. Max came next and helped the mom. Everyone was there together and they all hopped in the portal together. They escaped the I-pad and defeated Roblox. The Lost Penguin By Emmanuel Jimeno Tutor: Miranda Ratcliffe There was a penguin, his name was Joey. He was lost. He couldn't find his home. He was lost in a cold world. An orca with white eyes almost ate him up. He was lucky, two orcas appeared, one almost managed to grab his arm. Four orcas appeared again. Then one cracked the ice. The penguin feels in the water but it was faster than the orcas. Then he swam back to the shore and the biggest orcas came and grabbed his tail. The penguin wiggled out. Then another penguin appeared. It had a home. Joey wobbled to its house and asked, "Can I stay there for the night?" "Yes." When it is morning time, he finds his home and has a good day. The end.

Trip to Nigeria By Imaad Salami Tutor: Dana Rejtig One day my mom told me we were going to Nigeria, so I started packing all the stuff I wanted to bring. I packed books, my iPad, pencils, a notebook, and some toys. I was so excited. I went on four planes to get there. It was a very long flight and took the whole day. In Nigeria there are lots of different animals walking around the street. There were cows, goats, dogs and chickens. I was not afraid of them, I wanted to go play with them but when I tried, they ran away! I was in Nigeria for 21 days and I had a lot of fun. My favorite part of the trip was getting served food on the plane and playing with my cousins who live in Nigeria. I can’t wait to go back!

Hurricanes! By Ryan Perry Tutor: Kaitlyn Rhea Hurricanes are big storms. They form in the ocean, when the cool air hits the warm air. They usually come during hurricane season, which is June through the end of November. There are five categories based on wind speed. Hurricanes start off as tropical storms. They become hurricanes at 74 mph. A category 5 has wind speeds more than 155 mph. The east coast states get hit the most by hurricanes because they are right by the ocean. Even the National Hurricane Center is located in Florida. The biggest hurricane I have ever been in was a category 4.

Dock Fishing Extravaganza By Abigail Boswell Tutor: Payce Rohrer It was a sunny day in Myrtle Beach, I was going fishing with my Papa, Brother and my Nana. We like to fish off my grandparents' neighbor's dock. It is a small white dock that dips into the water a small bit. When we prepare to go fishing, we like to bring fishing poles to catch fish and nets for turtles. We like to use corn as bait for the fish! My Papa likes to help my brother and I put on the bait as well as reel in the line when there's a fish on the hook. My Nana goes to the store and buys us bait to fish. She also tells us when to come in if it's going to rain. Some things that we see at the dock are turtles, geese, swans, catfish and bass. One time my great uncle, Clarence, reeled in the largest fish we have ever caught, the fish he caught was a bass and it was 18 inches. I can’t wait until the next time we go fishing at the dock!

The Dragon By Zaida Heinberg Tutor: Jade Sanchez Once upon a time, there was a young boy named George. He had just turned 6 years old in February. One day, he was trying to find his toy dragon that was gifted to him by his great uncle Mitch. His toy dragon was named Mr. Cuddles. He was old and had a funny shaped hole in his wing, but George still loved him. At about 8:03pm, George’s mom called him down for dinner. He yelled to his mother “I’ll be there in 5.3 seconds!” George had misplaced his dragon and was desperate to find him before dinner, so he quickly started cleaning his room. He got kind of distracted and looked under the bed. He saw a large, glowing, purple hole. He crawled under the bed and touched the purple circle. He curiously looked down the hole but he slipped and fell in. He zoomed all the way down, down, down. Then, he saw something amazing! It was a big green dragon. He looked at his wing and saw that it had the same shape hole that his toy dragon had. He looked at the dragon’s foot and saw that his name, George, was written on it in sharpie. He asked the dragon, “Are you my toy dragon?” The dragon responded “Yes.” The dragon then asked if George could help fix his wing. The boy had watched a video on how to fix a dragon's wing. He needed to find a ground up turtle shell. The dragon and George looked for the shell for hours. They took a break from looking and started playing a game of tag. George was chasing the dragon when he grabbed onto his tail and they started flying. George looked down to the ground and saw a bright green turtle shell! When they got to the ground they picked it up. There was no turtle inside of it so they used the shell to make medicine. The medicine consisted of the shell, a bit of dragon spit, and one tablespoon of dirt. The dragon drank the medicine and the gash in his wing slowly started to close up. The dragon did not care that the medicine tasted disgusting because his wing felt much better. George and the dragon went back up through the big purple portal in the sky. A few seconds later, George woke up in his bedroom. He saw that his bedroom had been fully cleaned. He looked over at the other side of the bed to see his toy dragon. His wing was all fixed! Then, he saw the toy dragon wake up too... Betty Holden Stike Education Laboratory

THE BROKEN CONSOLE By Mason Jelinski Tutor: Emily Sutton The 5th grade class was on their last subject of the day, which of course was history. The class was doing group work and they got to choose their own partners. Matty, Johan, Billy, and Mason all got in the same group. They were really happy to start their project. However, all they could talk about was the new gaming console that had just released that day. “I will get it right away” Johan said. “Yeah right” said Matty. “Do you understand how much the console cost” Matty said. silent.

As their history teacher approached the front of the class everyone became “Well, that’s class kids,” said Mr. Smith. “Ok, everyone meet at Fred’s Game Shop after school gets out!” Johan said.

Matty, Mason, and Billy shook their heads and agreed to that. After school they all met up at the game shop and brought all the money they saved up. They combined their money together and used it to purchase the new console called yah6. It was the newest console, and they could not believe that they had it in their hands. “I think we should set it up at my house” Mason said. Once that they were at Mason’s house, they got the cords all connected to the tv and tried to turn the console on. Regardless of how many times they tried pressing the button it would not turn on. “So weird” Matty said. Johan agreed and thought that the console was broken. So, they decided to take the yah6 back to the game shop. When they got there, they saw some other kid bringing his console back as well. He seemed to have had the same problem that they were. When the store manager asked how he could help the kid replied with

“Are you telling me that I spent all this money on a console that won’t even turn on.” “Well, I don’t know why it will not turn on,” said the manager. “Fine take it back” the kid said, “But give me a refund on it.” The manger took the console back and gave the kid his refund. Mason begins to explain that he had the same problem. “Well, the store closes in 5 minutes.” Said the manager, “Just come back tomorrow and I can give you a refund, I promise.” “Fine.” said Mason. He turned and looked at his friends “Let’s go back to my house then.” They all left the store and began heading towards Mason’s house. As the group of friends were going back to Mason’s house, they had to walk past the graveyard. “AHHHHHHHHH!” screamed Joahn. “What's wrong?” said Billy. “There's...there's...there’s ZOMBIES!” stuttered Joahn. “OH NO,” said Billy. They all stood there looking at each other like, “What should we do?” After initially freaking out one of the boys spoke up and said, “Maybe when we come back tomorrow, we can see if they are still here.” “Are you kidding me?! There is no tomorrow if we die!” said Mason. “Well, the yah6 is a zombie theme console that has a bunch of zombie games. I wonder if it has anything to do with the zombies?” said Joahn. “The only way to know is if we try” said Matty. “So, let’s try something with the console.” “Good idea!” said the rest of the group. “How about we hit the reset button on the console?” said Johan. Everyone else agreed. They hit the reset button, but nothing happened to the zombies. Obviously, that was not the answer. They needed to try something else. Betty Holden Stike Education Laboratory

Watson College of Education UNC Wilmington

“Maybe we should destroy it,” said Mason. Everyone turned and looked at him like he was crazy. All his friends thought he had lost his mind. Matty spoke up and said, “Are you joking?! That console costs so much money.” “Well, the manager promised he would give us a refund tomorrow no matter what.” Mason said. The boys talked and decided that it was the only option they had left. If the game had something to do with the zombies, then surely destroying it would get rid of them too. They all decided they were going to crush it together. Joahn did the count down. “3, 2, 1, now stomp!” “All that hard work we did to get the money for the console is gone” said Matty. The boys began to argue back and forth about the fact that they should not have destroyed the console. They were arguing so much that they forgot to look and see what happened to the zombies after they destroyed the console. It was not until one of the friends turned around from arguing that they realized the zombies were gone. “Whoa” shouted Billy. “The zombies are gone!” “That so strange,” Mason added. Everyone turned and looked at each other in amazement of what had happened. They all decided to walk back by the graveyard tomorrow when they got the refund. It was the next day at school and the boys could not wait to be dismissed to go home. They were ready to get a refund and hopefully a new game that worked. Finally the bell rang. “Have a nice afternoon student’s” Mr. Smith said as the students were leaving his class. When they all got to the game shop like they had planned Billy said, “Let’s get our refund!” Betty Holden Stike Education Laboratory

Watson College of Education UNC Wilmington

As soon as those words came out of Billy’s mouth Mason realized he forgot to bring the console. Mason said, “Guys I’ll be right back, I have to run home and grab the console.” All his friends waited outside the game shop for him to return with the console. It only took Mason about 10 minutes to get it but to his friends it seemed like it took forever. When he returned Matty said, “Ok guys let’s get a refund with a broken console.” Everyone agreed as they entered the game shop. As they were entering the game shop the manager recognized them and said, “Glad to see you came back for your refund.” The boys explained to the manager what was wrong and waited patiently as he got their refund and new console. After they received the new console Billy asked “Are you sure this one works?” The manager told them that it would. The boys then left the game shop with the new console and headed back to Mason’s house. They played the new game until they beat all the levels and became board. Johan then suggested they go back to the graveyard and see if the zombies were back out. TO BE CONTINUED...

You Can NOT Buy Nature By Parham Ghorbani Tutor: Mikayla Wagnes

Should we swim with dolphins? Humans are thinking about themselves before the dolphins. People pay to go on tours to see the dolphins and sometimes swim with them. People see this as a once in a lifetime opportunity, which it sometimes is. However, it disturbs the dolphins, which is a more important matter. The tour operators on dolphin tours know that the dolphins are resting right now, yet they ignore it. This disturbs the dolphins’ sleeping patterns, which in turn makes hunting harder, and results in less food for the dolphins and their babies.

How can we Save the Dolphins? Dolphins are an ocean animal, not an aquarium animal. Dolphins need space to roam, or else they will get bored. Dolphins are a lot like people, they have feelings and need to play. Aquariums are small and that isn’t good animal care. No matter how big the aquarium is, the unnatural habitat does not match the ocean. The National Aquarium in Baltimore wants to move the dolphins from inside aquariums into outside sanctuaries. Cost of the sanctuaries is unknown and depends on the land values where they are built. Since dolphin show attendance has been declining, the aquarium may not be able to afford the high quality sanctuaries.

Oil Spills Affect Marine Life In the Prince William Straight in 1989, there was an oil spill that affected both humans and marine life. Exxon Mobil’s Valdez oil tanker spill impacted the population of fish, which in turn impacted the fishing community. Evidence shows ever since the oil spill, the population of marine life has gone down. The fishermen don’t have much fish to catch then, which impacts their income. Exxon Mobil paid $900 million and may have to pay $100 million on top of that. The problem is that you can’t buy nature. It takes years to restore a population. For example, the orca population went down from 22 to 7 orcas. Hopefully over time, the fisherman community and marine life population can be restored back to normal.

Floating Cities: A New Idea The company Oceanix is developing a concept for floating cities, but the cities have their cons. There are a lot of things that are not considered good for the environment. First is energy consumption. The plan is to use solar panels, but this technology has not been fully developed. To build houses, they plan on using wood and bamboo, two natural resources. The marine life is not used to having wood and bamboo in their ocean. How will wood and bamboo hold up to saltwater? After research, it seems putting the natural resource in the saltwater without preservatives will cause the materials to rot. In order to get the materials to the location, they need to use boats. Boats can be dangerous for marine life. The gas and exhaust is bad for the environment and dolphins. There are also boat propeller accidents with marine life.

The Adventure of Candy and the Ghoul Squad By Mara (Nay Nay) King Tutor: Lauren (LuLu) Whatley It was a dark and spooky night when Candy the Unicorn was having a Halloween party. She was putting out food and drinks when she remembered that she forgot to invite people! She was looking for some friends to invite because all of hers were trick-or-treating. So, she went on an adventure to find some more friends to come. She never knew it would be so hard. Candy set out on her new adventure. She started by galloping through a graveyard where she met a friendly skeleton. “Hello there, I am Rattle the Skeleton.” He says politely. Candy quickly jumped back as this startled her. “Don’t be afraid!” Rattle said, “I am here to help.” Candy was relieved and said, “Would you like to come to my Halloween Party?” “Thank you!” he said, “I would love to.” Candy and Rattle then continue galloping on toward the dumpsters where they see a black cat. Rattle sees the cat first and tells Candy “I see something lurking in the dark.” Candy said, “Let’s look to see if there is something in here.” Rattle and Candy look through the dumpster and find Curtis. Curtis the cat asked angrily, “what are you doing in my dumpster?” Candy and Rattle said, “We did not know we were intruding on you.” Rattle says, “Would you like to go to our party?” Curtis replies “no, I would rather stay in my dumpster.” Candy and Rattle move on from the mean cat, sad that he would not come. Candy and Rattle walk into the cornfield where they see Cam the Scarecrow smiling and waving. “Hi there!” Cam says, “Would you like to keep me company?” “I have an idea,” Candy says to Rattle, “Let’s invite him to the party!” Rattle says,” Great idea, let’s go ask.” After asking Cam if he would like to come, he says “Sure! I don’t want to be alone out here with the birds.” Candy and Rattle take him off the sticks that are holding him and they head toward Halloweentown. There they see Carly the witch casting a mean spell on a goblin making his nose super big and ugly. Candy, Rattle, and Cam all see the witch and say, “AHHH it’s a witch! She is so scary and creepy.” The three decide to hide from her and they see a haunted house across the street. They run and hide in the haunted house where they are greeted by Casper the Friendly Ghost. “Hi there,” Casper says, “I’m Casper.” They all scream, and Casper gets startled. “I am really nice, I promise,” he replies. “All I want are some friends.” Candy, Rattle, and Cam feel sad for Casper

She was awoken by the loud noise again. She decided to investigate it. The next morning, someone drove by the house, and they heard someone screaming from inside. They decided to help and went to see who was screaming in the house. They followed the screams to the basement. Where they found the bodies of the previous homeowners. They found a hidden cave under the stairs of the basement that led to where the creature lived. They were trying to gather evidence of the creature and his layer. They did not see him, so they assumed he was not there. To their surprise, the creature was watching them from the darkness. He roared with ferociousness and the people were frozen with shock. What they saw was a terrifying creature. He was very tall, with claws as sharp as knives. He had red eyes like the color of blood, with sharp teeth and was coming right toward them. That was the last thing the people ever saw.

We get our Pokémon today.” Percy stopped laughing and rushed to get ready. He put on his clothes lightning fast and brushed his hair and teeth. Then he got his backpack and rushed down stairs and before his mom could say good morning he was out the door to the lab. When he ran through the doors and when he stopped he was already out of breath and panting. “Well, well, right on time,” said Doctor Oak with a grin. “Don't want to be late” while gasping for breath, Percy said. “Are you ready to get your Pokémon?” said Doc Oak. Without hesitation Percy stood straight up. Then Percy walked to the table and saw two Pokeballs there were Balbasaur and Charmander. “Which one will you pick?” Doc Oak asked. “I choose Charmander!” Then he threw the ball and out came Charmander. Chapter 2: The First Gem When Percy walked out he saw Carter and saw that he had a Pokeball. “Let me guess, you got Squirtle,” said Percy. “Yep, so I have a type advantage,” said Carter. “Well let's go training,” said Percy. As they train Percy stumbled upon an Oddish. He threw a Pokeball at it and caught the Oddish and said, “Hey Carter I caught an Oddish.” “Cool, that will be helpful for the gem,” said Carter. While Carter was training he found a Bellsprout and it took two tries to catch the Pokémon. “Hey Percy.” said Carter” I caught a Bellsprout!” “Nice, it can evolve into Victreebel.” After training they went off to the rock gem. They both split up and went to the gem. Percy was the first one there, so he went to fight the rock gem. Chapter 3: The Battle When he got to Brock, the gem leader, he threw out Oddish and defeated the first Pokémon. The Pokémon was Geodude and then Brock threw out Onix. Then Oddish used Giga Drain and defeated Onix and got the gem badge and was out the doors of the rock gem. When he was outside he saw Carter and said good luck and Carter went in the gem. Then Percy went to the Pokémon center to heal his Pokémon. He was on his way to the water gem and then he found an Electrike. Chapter 4: Electricity and Water Don't Mix When Electrike was caught Percy knew he would be helpful for the water gem. When he got to the gem he had Electrike ready to begin the battle. He threw Electrike out and used thunderbolt and defeated Starly. Then she threw out Goldeen and then Electrike used thunderbolt and defeated Goldeen. Percy got the gem badge and he knew he would be able to beat the other gems. To be continued... Betty Holden Stike Education Laboratory

Playing Games Outside By Nazier Hardy Tutor: Robbin Rivers

I like to play games outside with my brother and sisters. We like to play cool games like, football, patty cake and Marco Polo. We can only play Marco Polo in the summer, only in the pool when we go with our family. The other outside games we can play all year outside are football and patty cake. I am on a football team with my brother and cousins. I like to play football because it challenges me and I get to run real fast. My brother and I like to play patty cake with our sisters. I like the way they sing the song and clap their hands. Playing outside is the best, it’s better than playing video games!

The Joyful Grape By Kelsey Dudley Tutor: Lilah Rossell Once upon a time, in a land far away, there was a grape. The grape was sad. The grape told his mom he was sad, and she told him a story. “Once upon a time a joyful grape climbed to the top of a volcano” said his mom. The sad grape wanted to be like the grape in the story. So he said to his mom “I want to go to the top of a volcano.” There was only one volcano nearby. So he sneaked out the door and walked to the volcano. The sun was very harsh and by the time he got there, he had turned into a raisin! He went home and he was so tired his mom said time to eat but he was sleeping. He dreamt of the volcano.

He was walking one morning when he saw a seagull flying at a woman carrying a big purse. The man said, "I’m not in a good mood so go.” Before she left, the woman gave him some money for helping her. And he walked back to the beach and he was a little happy.

My Favorite Game By Avari Jones Tutor Elizabeth Rouse

My favorite game is hide and seek because it is fun. I can play with all my friends in the school, and at the park. We play that game a lot with my little sister Lilly. We play that game with my daddy and mommy in the park. I am good at it; I always find everybody fast. We play hide and seek around the house and in the park that is near my house. We like that park a lot because there are a lot of things to do, and we could play hide and seek there. The park has a big playground, and we could find hiding places easily. One day Lilly climbed all over the top of the tree. It was hard to find her; she scared me. I was calling her for a long time, but I couldn’t find her. I became really sad since I could not find my little sister. I looked all over for her, but I couldn’t find her. Then I saw her climbing down the tree; I was happy to see her. She found honey!!! We brought the honey to the house, and we ate it all. It was good honey, like Winnie Pooh honey. The End.

Erik’s Weekend By Erik Everhart Tutor: Shirlee Ann Williams I had such a fun Friday afternoon. I started my afternoon by going home from school and playing with my Lego airplane. I got this airplane for my birthday. When I play with my Lego airplane, I like to pretend that it is flying in the sky. I was so excited for my mom to come home from work. I wanted her to download a new game for me called Prodigy. When she got home, I talked to her about the game, and she let me download it because it was a math game! I played it for a long time because it was ultra-fun. Now I am ready for the weekend!

The New York City Dinosaur By Jack Perry Tutor: Jessie Ruckart Bob the Tyrannosaurus rex lived in New York City. He was the last standing dinosaur on planet Earth. Bob was a friendly dinosaur. He had green, scaly skin that glistened in the sun. All the children loved him. Bob was famous all over the city. The children especially enjoyed playing with Bob. He would spend hours at Central Park allowing kids to play with him. He would let them ride on his back and swing on his tail. Everyone loved having Bob around until one day something bad happened at the park. One day, Jeff, a kid from the neighborhood, fell into Bob’s mouth while playing. Bob panicked and accidentally ate him. Jeff’s parents were sad that Bob ate their only son. They wanted Bob to disappear. They didn’t want any other kids to be eaten by him. The family started a petition to get rid of the T. rex, but Bob was very apologetic for his actions and didn’t want to have to leave New York. He promised to never eat any more children again. The community was able to forgive Bob for eating Jeff. They realized maybe Bob was just hungry and didn't have enough to eat. To make sure Bob didn’t eat any other children, the community made sure he had plenty of food to eat. They had leaves and other plants outside of their homes for him to eat.

For Kids: AUTUMN DAYS

Squirrels skitter, Look! Leaves fall, fall to the ground. See? What’s that smell? Autumn.
