Hello, I am Betty Holden Stike Congratulations on being published in Author Showcase! I was born in Brunswick County, North Carolina and lived in Bolivia and on Holden Beach with my family. My father was a farmer and owned property, and my mother a homemaker. I had five brothers and one sister! I grew up loving my family, loving to read, and loving school. I had my own library at home and our family always read together. I graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College in 1936 and received my teaching certificate. After that, I taught elementary school back home in Brunswick County. I married Mr. Ray L. Stike, and we had one son. We named him John, and he became a dentist in Wilmington. He was a joy to me all my life. After teaching elementary school for a while, I started working at Wilmington College. There, I showed future teachers how to teach reading, language arts, social studies and math. Wilmington College became the University of North Carolina Wilmington, and I served on the faculty there until I retired in 1984. In 1985, the Ed Lab was created so future teachers could learn to teach reading under the guidance of the literacy faculty. That first year, the Ed Lab had less than forty students! When the Ed Lab moved into the new Education Building in 2005, a brand new space with books, learning games and plenty of room to learn was named in my honor. The Betty Holden Stike Education Laboratory. I was so proud! Now, the Ed Lab has more than two hundred fifty students each year, all learning reading, writing, math, science, social studies and so many other things! I particularly love the Authors Showcase because you let us know that you and your family value reading and learning and supporting each other.

The Adventures of Mr. Heart’s Group By Seth Henzler Tutor: Nick Avery Prologue: In this present moment, the story begins...Mr. Heart was in his house in the middle of the night. It was three in the morning and everyone in his neighborhood was asleep. Mr. Heart is a spy that works for the “FTA”, Freedom's Top Agency, and is the best in the business. In fact, he was the boss and his partner was Mr. Steve. They have been working together for 25 years and also Mr. Heart met Mr. Steve when he was 5 years old. The duo have been tracking down another evil group that is commanded by the Evil Computer for ages. Not a noise could be heard until something happened... Chapter One: The Beginning…All of a sudden, the printer in Mr. Heart’s office was making a very weird noise and a really weird paper was printing. Before the printer finished printing, Mr. Heart called Mr. Steve and told him to come over right away. When Mr. Steve arrived, they examined the paper that was printed and discovered a secret code and a strange drawing. They went right to the internet to find a helper to solve this mystery and the two guys found a prodetective that specializes in cracking codes and finding treasures with maps named Ms. Flowers. Chapter Two: The Adventure…The group’s adventure begins immediately, as they follow the map that Ms. Flowers was able to read for them. The first stop on the treasure hunt was in a forest where the crew ran into a swarm of flies coming at them and they got lots of bug bites. To help, they got tea tree oil from the trees and healed their wounds. They traveled into outer space and almost ran through a supernova star, but dodged the star barely. They got lost trying to avoid the star and ended up in different places. Mr. Steve landed on an asteroid belt, Mr. Heart ended up in the middle of a ton of other supernovas, and Ms. Flowers happened to find herself on Jupiter. How are they going to find each other now? Mr. Steve yells out, “Oh Uler”, because he was trying to communicate to the rest of the group. After he found them all scattered in space, safely and soundly the group made their way back to Earth. They landed on a beach right where the treasure map showed the giant red X. Chapter Three: We Win! Larry and Sally, the bank robbers from the Evil Computer’s organization, got to the beach at just about the same time as the group landed from outer space. Ms. Flowers, Mr. Heart, and Mr. Steve all ran into the ocean and swam as fast as they could to get away from the bank robbers. The bank robbers almost beat them to the treasure! Then the spies all split off in different directions running away and searching at the same time for the loot. Ms. Flowers finds the treasure first and tells the others on their radios that she found it. The group decides to meet back up at Mr. Heart’s house and so they all get to see the treasure. The bank robbers were long lost in the ocean and no one knows what happened to them.

Dream. Comes. True. By Jiwon Kang Tutor: Mackenzie Bowen I had a dream yesterday about me seeing a famous and my favorite YouTuber. I met her in California. That is where she lives. She walked up to me and asked me to take a picture with her. I said “yes!” She took her phone out and then took a picture of her and me. Then she made a video with me and ten million people watched it. But people did not know my channel name so I told them my name and they all subscribed to me. My channel name was “OceanSisters.” Then, I became famous and had the badge for one million. This badge was sent to my house because I had one million subscribers. Next, I posted a lot of videos. These videos were me taking walks, getting one hundred bucks, me getting a Nintendo Switch, me getting all the fidgets I wanted, getting a dog, and getting a new house. All of my videos had over ten million views and one million comments. I also got a Gucci bag and more stuff from Gucci. My favorite video was on the fidgets. Next, I got ten million bucks and one million more subscribers. The last thing I got in the dream was my huge, huge teddy bear. I then met the YouTuber every day after that and got her number. When I woke up I needed to go to school and I was late. I wish this was a real dream.

The Girl Who Wanted to be a Veterinarian By: Ingrid Hawthorne Tutor: Whitney Brown One day, there was a little girl who had a dream of becoming a veterinarian. She loved animals so much and she liked to go to the zoo every chance she got. Her favorite animal is a parrot. She likes parrots because they are beautiful and inspiring. One time when she went to the zoo, she saw an eagle who had lost her beak. She wanted to help the eagle, so that’s when she decided she wanted to become a veterinarian. That little girl is me, Ingrid Hawthorne. One day, I will become a vet and help as many animals as I can. I want to save them all! Also, hunters, don’t hurt leopards please, they are becoming extinct, and I love them! I was inspired to be a vet by Jane Goodall. She spent a lot of time with chimpanzees. She saved the lives of many chimps buy protecting them and standing up for them. She is my hero! I also want to be a vet because I have a dog of my own and I love taking care of him. He has seizers and one time I saw it happen. It scared me so much and I want to know how to take better care of him. He is my best friend and I never want to be scared like that again. The story above really happened; I just made a little twist!

Elly and Emily’s Adventure at Hogwarts – Chapter I By: The aspiring authors - Ellyson Amspacher-Philemon and Emily Buggy
One day, two best friends stumbled upon on old, beat up, and abandoned car. The two best friends were named, Elly and Emily. Elly was 9 and Emily was 10. When they got to the abandoned car, they wanted to climb inside to see if it would work. Elly found the keys and tried to turn on the car. Before their eyes, the car lifted off the ground and began flying. Elly and Emily were weirded out and confused as to why they were in a flying car. The best friends had no control over the car and then suddenly they saw a strange looking castle in the distance. Elly and Emily wandered up to the castle and saw so many people wearing robes. After watching these people for five minutes, an older woman with her gray hair up in a bun, approached Elly and Emily and asked, "Are you here for Hogwarts?" Elly and Emily replied, "Yes" even though they had no idea where they were, and it was too late to go home. The professor sent us inside and the girls followed everyone else. They reached a huge room with students everywhere. The students were being assigned to different houses. Elly and Emily heard their names be called and wondered how they even knew their names. The girls sat there and did nothing because they did not know what was going on. The speaker called their names again and then said "Hufflepuff." After the sorting ceremony was over, the girls ran up the stairs to find their room. As they were running, the stairs were moving, and Elly almost fell. She caught her balance, and the girls ran to their room. They realized that they needed a password, so they ran back down the moving steps and Emily almost fell. They finally got the password and got into their rooms. They met their roommate named Lily and they talked for hours. Elly and Emily really liked Lily and they became best friends. Lily was telling them all about Hogwarts and magic. Lily said "The only way that you two can be here is if you have magic in you, but I am going to bed, so we can talk all about it in the morning. Elly and Emily were so excited to see what was going to be happen tomorrow. The next day, Elly, Emily, and Lily were going to explore Hogwarts. The girls came across a group of people who were outside shouting. Lily saw one of her friends and the girls walked over to him. Lily introduced Elly and Emily to her friend. "Hi, my name is James! It is nice to meet you, Elly and Emily!" The four of them were talking and laughing together, sharing their stories about how they got into Hogwarts. James and Lilly couldn't believe that Elly and Emily got to Hogwarts by a flying car! As they were talking and laughing, Lily saw another friend, named Snape and called him over. Snape had black hair, and did not smile very often, except when Lily was around. Emily and Elly realized they forgot their books in their dorm, so they ran back to get them. On their way back they peered around the corner and saw James being mean to Snape. James was using his wand to make Snape fly above everyone that was outside. Everyone was laughing at Snape. Snape kept saying to put him down, but James was not listening. Elly and Emily ran over to see what was going on. James was laughing at seeing Snape struggle in the air. All the sudden, Snape was zapped by another wand and was brought back down safely. James stopped laughing and realized that Lily was the one who brought him back down. Elly and Emily looked at each other and both gave each other the look of “what have we gotten ourselves into.” Betty Holden Stike Education Laboratory

My Four Game Winning Streak!
By Aria Oxendine Tutor: Jenna Chase I’m going to tell you the story of how I won 4 softball games. I had softball games, and I kept getting hurt, but that didn’t stop me from playing hard and doing my best. My team wasn’t doing really good in the first game, but I knew we would win somehow! When I went up to bat, I hit it over the fence and I got a homerun and 3 people in. We kept getting better and better, so when the game was over, I thought my team lost, but no…we won… by a lot! In our next game, we hit first. I was the last one to hit, but my teammates still did good hitting. When it was my turn, I got out, but that was ok because my coach said it was ok! My teammates helped me when I got hurt or when someone else got hurt. We didn’t give up when someone got out and we were determined to win the game. A shocking thing that happened was when I broke someone’s windshield. I got to pitch and I kept getting girls out, so they got no ins. We went to the championships and we won! That’s my story of how I won the 4 softball games!

When I Grow Up… By Cayden Sigmon Tutor: Anna Couturier When I grow up, I want to be a great high school football player. I want to play receiver and practice and train really hard so that I can get a college scholarship. This would be amazing because my dream college is Clemson! After college, I want to go to the National Football League (NFL) draft. My dream is to play for the Buccaneers like Tom Brady. If I do not get picked for the Buccaneers, my second choice would be the Carolina Panthers. I would like to play with Antonio Brown, and he can train me to be the greatest football player ever! I love football because I get to tackle people and run a lot. I also like being able to work as a team to win and make new friends! I would want all of my family and my dog Maple to come watch all of my games and cheer me on.

All about My Vacation to Disney World By: Peyton Wall Tutor: Tori Daughtridge We all work up at 6:00 in the morning and Logan gave me my birthday present and then we got our socks and shoes on and got our luggage packed into the car and drove to the airport. We met my grandma and grandpa at the airport and got checked in and went to our plane. We sat down and turned out devices to airplane mode and then the plane took off. We got some drinks and snacks. We then got off the plane and drove a bus to our resort. I was in a room with my grandad and grandma. My sister and my mom and Jeremy were in another room. We went to the cafeteria and we ate breakfast and rode a bus to the magic kingdom. We went and shopped then got lunch. We chilled and then got dinner. We celebrated my birthday and had cupcakes. We stayed up late and then went to sleep. We rode a bunch of rides and got some toys and played some games. We went back to the resort and unpacked everything and got dinner. Wednesday we went to Epcot. That was my least favorite because it was super cold. The next day we went to the animal kingdom. Friday, we went back to magic kingdom and rode some rides. There was a photographer and we got a picture. Logan was upset and did not smile in the picture because we were mad at each other. We went back to the hotel and walked to the cafeteria and got dinner. We came back to the room and packed our clothes. We put our clothes on for tomorrow. Saturday morning we headed to the airport and got a picture with the airplane crew. We got off the plane and drove back home.

We are quitting, because you are mean.” The Kittens turn and leave. “WHY DO YOU WANT TO LEAVE DO YOU NEED MORE FOOD?” Fluzzy cries. “Maybe I don’t have any kittens, but I can still do my plan.” Fuzzy’s plan is to use his sound beam blaster to make the dogs go crazy. The Tall, Crooked House By Zaida Heinberg Tutor: Sarah Dunn Once upon a time there was an evil man named John. He had a sidekick dragon named Dragon. John was a scary man. He had an abnormally large nose, always wore pointy shoes and loved imprisoning people. He lived in a very tall, crooked house. His house was on top of a hill far, far away from any other people. In the closest village, there was a lovely girl named Ania. Ania lived by herself in a small cabin located in the middle of the village. One day she decided to go for a walk. She walked for hours and then she realized that she was very far away from her village. She could only see a very tall and crooked house on top of the hill. There had been rumors that this crooked house was haunted. “A light is on, but no one lives there” Ania said to herself. She looked at her watch and saw it was 10:23 PM and she needed to get home. Then she heard a voice say, “Help!” She knew it was coming from the crooked house. She heard another deeper voice from the same place say, “no one is coming to save you and you're hurting my ears, so stop it!” Something inside of her said don’t go there. Go home and dream about tomorrow. Then, she heard the man yelling again so she ran over to the building. She looked around for any way to get in. Then she saw something. It was breathing, but she couldn’t tell what it was. Ania knew it was sleeping, so she very quietly crept past it. Ania was not quiet enough. When the thing woke up, she saw it was a dragon. The dragon quickly sat up and said, “Hi, I’m a guard dragon. My name is Dragon!” The dragon had the biggest eyes and the smallest nose Ania had ever seen. Its wings were the size of a bunch of bananas. “I am Ania” she said, still stunned by the sight of the dragon. “Nice!” Dragon said. “I’m not allowed to let people in, but there is an entrance at the back. Do you want me to show you the way?” Confused, Ania replied “yes please, that would be very kind of you.” The dragon brought Ania to the back of the house. It was very dark, but Ania could still tell that the passage had not been used for a very long time. They crawled for a while down the tunnel. Ania checked her watch again. It was 12:46 AM, she really had to get home. Ania asked “Hey Dragon, how do we get the evil guy to go out of the room for a while?” Dragon replied, “His name is John. Don’t worry, I got this covered.”

At the end of the tunnel, there was a ladder that was hooked to a window. The window led into the house. The dragon went first. He hopped into the house. Ania could hear him say, “Hey John, I was just wondering when you could teach me how to make coffee.” “Well why would you want to know that?” asked John. “Well, you’ve been so busy lately, I thought if you could teach me to make the coffee, you would have more time to watch him,” Dragon said as he pointed to Josh. John replied with a grin, “I guess you're right, let go make some coffee.” John and Dragon walked away. Ania slowly crawled into the house and saw the man who she knew was screaming. He had brown, curly hair and he was wearing a soccer jersey. Ania whispered “Hi there, I’m Ania. I am here to save you.” Josh quickly said, “I’m Josh. Now can you please cut these ropes off my wrist? My arms feel like they’re going to fall off!” Ania got out her pocketknife and started cutting the rope from around Josh’s wrists. Josh was squealing and making ridiculous noises. He frantically said, “Be careful, don’t cut me, please don’t cut me! I’m too young to die!” Then Ania and Josh heard John say, “Then you put the last thing in…” “Oh no, they're almost finished, we have to go!” Josh climbed down the ladder, but Ania was still inside. Josh shouted “Come on! They’re going to capture you!” “I can’t leave without Dragon,” Ania said. John and Dragon walked in; John was carrying a hot cup of coffee. Ania quickly spilled John's coffee on him and grabbed Dragon. They ran for the window to climb to safety. When they got to the ground, they were all very grateful to be safe from the evil John. A few years later, Josh and Ania had a house of their own. With the help of Dragon, they told their three kids the story of how they met every night before bed. Throughout story time, Dragon kept interjecting saying, “No, I was the one who did that.” This always gave the kids a good laugh. Josh and Ania always stressed to their kids and others that if you have an opportunity to help someone, you should. They all lived by this moral and lived happily ever after. The End. The Minecraft Roller Coaster By Noah Harpold Tutor: Tyler Gibson
Noah spawned in the world with slimes. 😢😢😐😐 The slimes were bad. He was building something in creative that he liked and that was a rollercoaster kind of aquarium. He decided to put fish in the water. He said it took him exactly one long hour to build only one section of the rollercoaster. It takes one hour in real life to build a couple of tracks. He still needed to build a legion of tracks for the roller coaster. Noah stopped working on the rollercoaster because he saw a rare spider with a skeleton on top. The skeleton was holding an enchanted bow. He got distracted by the spider.

The Day I Got Rainbow and Glitter By: Joel Ertzberger Tutor: Rachel Haney One fall day, I was thinking about getting beta fish because I had seen them before. I thought they were very interesting. When I finally decided I wanted fish, I asked my dad to drive me to the local pet store. We got in the car and drove to the local pet store. Then we got out of the car and opened the door and walked into the store. Once we were inside, we walked straight to the beta fish section. There were so many colorful fish to choose from! It was very hard to choose! But I narrowed it down to three or four and then decided on my two favorites. Then Dad and I went over to the tank section to see where they would be living. We found a green glow in the dark tank that we thought that they would like. After we decided on the fish and the tank, we went to the checkout. We walked up to the register and they checked us out. After we checked out, we went to the car and Dad looked at me and said, “Hold onto the fish!” On the car ride home, I talked with my dad about what I should name them. We finally got home and set the fish on my shelf and opened the box that had the tank in it. Although we had bought water from the store, we couldn’t put them in it right away because the water had to be at room temperature. After all of the waiting we could finally put them into their tank! After a few minutes they were finally in their tank. I decided to name one of my fish, but I was still deciding what to name the other. That night as I was getting into bed, I was still pondering what to name my other fish. I woke up the next morning and I couldn’t wait to feed them! So, I jumped out of bed and I grabbed the food. When I opened the food, it smelled interesting. I put three pebbles into both sides of the tank. When I was looking at the nameless fish, I saw little silver spots on him and that’s when I decided to name him Glitter. I loved the ring that that names had together, Rainbow and Glitter!

Unicorn Land Tutee: Berkeley Black Tutor: Hailey Hardee Once upon a time, there was a girl named Melody. Melody was walking through the forest when there was a big storm. There was thunder, lightning, and tornadoes. The trees around Melody began to fall and she was very scared. Right before a tree fell down on Melody, a brave unicorn saved her. The unicorn had a rainbow horn and she was very strong. The unicorn took Melody to a cave, where she would be safe from the storm. Melody looked around and realized that it was a magical unicorn palace that had a special barrier around it! There was a unicorn king and queen and other unicorns who lived there. “Hello my name is Sparkle!” said the brave unicorn. “Where are we?” said Melody. “We are in Unicorn Land” said the Queen, “the king is supposed to be here, but he is sleeping”. Tomorrow was Sparkle's birthday and Melody wanted to thank her for saving her life. Melody and some of the other unicorns planned a surprise birthday party and invited everyone in Unicorn Land. There was cake and presents and games. After the party Melody fell asleep, but when she woke up she was back in her bedroom at home. Melody realized it was all just a dream!

The Mystery of the Stolen Gem By Cora Spacek Tutor: Olivia Hawkins One spooky Halloween night, there was a story in the paper about a rare gem that was stolen from the local museum. The gem that went missing from the museum was a blue sparkling crystal gem that had invisibility powers. The detective Lilly and her assistant Josh went out to search houses as soon as they knew the gem was missing. Assistant Josh knew of a haunted house where the gem might be. The house was very old and creaky when they walked through it. When they got to the house they heard "we have to keep this safe" coming from upstairs. Detective Lilly and Assistant Josh wondered who said it and what they needed to keep safe. They walked up the creaky old steps and hid behind a wall when they heard “let’s go before the police came." Detective Lilly saw from around the corner it was the robbers. The robbers were on the way out of the room when the detectives jumped out to stop them. Both detective Lilly and assistant Josh wrestled the robbers until they won. Detective Lilly saw the gem sitting on a pedestal across the room. She ran for the gem and grabbed it. Detective Lilly booked it, and she got out of the house as fast as she could! Detective Lilly and Assistant Josh then safely returned the rare gem back to the local museum.

A Dynamic Duo’s Adventures in Amsterdam By Allison Morales Tutor: Genesis Henderson
Jessica and Bianca, seasoned world travelers, are on their first school trip to the Netherlands. They have been on many trips before, but this was their first trip together. Bianca, sitting down in the class, was waiting patiently for her friend. Bianca began to worry as her teacher, Ms. Ana, had just announced it was time to get in the bus and go to the airport. Just then Jessica burst into the room. She looked frazzled with her hair a mess and her clothes on backwards. Ms. Ana said, “You're just in time Jessica!” Jessica gave a big smile “I’m so sorry, my alarm didn’t go off.'' Noticing Jessica's clothes Ms. Ana walked over to Jessica and said in a quiet voice “Jessica maybe you should take a few minutes in the cubbies and change a bit”. Jessica realizing her clothes were on backwards, giggled nervously, and slipped into the cubbies. As Bianca waited for Jessica, she looked at the trip’s itinerary. Some of the trip’s highlights include visiting the royal palace, the Van Gogh museum, and the home of Ana Frank. As Bianca was reading, Jessica Plopped down beside her. “Hey whatcha doin Bianca?” Bianca replied “Jessica! Look at the trip Itinerary.” Jessica smiled. “Oh, I am so excited for this trip; I wonder what adventures we will get up to?!?!” Bianca giggled and said, “With you, everything is an adventure”. Both girls looked to the front of the room as Ms. Ana announced it was time to go to the Airport. Everyone jumped up with their bags and raced to the bus. While on the bus Ms. Ana told her students that they were going to have a partner. Jessica’s hand shot up “Ms. Ana can we pick our own partner?” Ms. Ana smiling replied, “Yes, of course.” Jessica and Bianca hugged each other knowing that they were going to be partners. Just then they arrived at the airport and made their way to the terminal. Once they sat on the airplane, Ms. Anna gave each of them a “Guide to Amsterdam” book. Inside the book, one of the first interesting facts that Jessica noticed was that the national language of the Netherlands is Dutch. She looked to the back of the book and saw common words and phrases. In her book, Bianca noticed that one popular mode of transportation is riding a bicycle. The pilot then began speaking over the intercom, “Hello passengers, we are about to take off. Please buckle your seatbelts as we ascend. I hope you all enjoy flying with American Airlines.” The girls smiled to each other and held hands as the plane took off. Jessica looked out her window and said, “Bianca we are so high I can’t see my house. I can only see the lights of the city like little fires for ant people.” Bianca laughing said, “You’re so funny Jessi”. Jessica grinning replied, “I know right.” As they settled in for the long 10-hour flight, they fell asleep on each other’s shoulders with sweet dreams of the adventure to come. As they arrived to Amsterdam they woke to the excited voices of their classmates. Yawning and stretching, they looked out the window to see a winter wonderland. They descended into the city and departed the airplane. Once they were inside the airport, Ms. Ana said, “Students, grab your partner and follow me to the bus. We have to get to the hotel”. Excitedly the class moved to their bus. As they drove through the city, their teachers told them where they were to visit along their trip. coated in a powdery white snow. Soon they arrived at the hotel and the partners, hand in hand, went to their rooms. Bianca said to Jessica, “Come on Jessica, you slow cat, let’s see what our room look like.” Jessica answered in a frustrated voice, “I am coming Bianca; I am only slow because I am caring all the luggage.” Bianca, with her cheeks pink from embarrassment, said “Oh, ha-ha, I’ll help you.” They lugged their bags upstairs and walked to their room. As they walked inside, they saw a gorgeous view of the city and two big fluffy beds. They both gasped and exclaimed, “Oh my gosh!” Throwing down their luggage, they jumped into their big luxurious beds and jumped around throwing pillows at each other. The girls then looked at their itinerary and saw that there would be an informational meeting in the conference room. They grabbed their notebooks and made their way downstairs. There they sat at a table with their classmates Alex and Cyrus. As they sat together, they talked about what they wanted to do for the trip. Alex was most excited for the Van Gogh museum while Cyrus was excited for visiting the Royal Palace. After a moment, Ms. Ana came in with a tall stack of papers and book. She handed one packet to each child. Inside there was a map of Amsterdam, brochures for the places they would visit and a translation book. Ms. Ana went to the front of the conference room and began talking about the trip. “Tomorrow we will be visiting some wonderful and iconic places in Amsterdam,” she spoke of the palace and the museums as well as the history behind the Ana Frank house. Then after three hours of working together, Ms. Ana dismissed them for the night. The friends took their packets and notebooks then made their way back to their room. Exhausted and half asleep, Jessica said, “Bianca I am so tired. See you tomorrow, good night, I am going to bed”. Bianca yawned and said, “Goodnight best friend.” However, Bianca stayed up a bit longer reading her Dutch translation book, but inevitably fell asleep, as well. Bianca woke up the next morning to the sound of Dutch music playing over the radio. She moved over to Jessica and said, “Wakey wakey, time for adventure! Both girls took a shower and changed for the day. They then packed their bags with their packets from the day before, their phones, and some snacks for their travels. They rushed down to the lobby and in front of them was a beautiful dining area with the most delicious smelling breakfast. One tasty option being a Stroopwafel which looked like both a cookie and waffle. Jessica said, “Look Bianca. Doesn’t it looks delicious?” Bianca answered, with her plate piling high, “Oh yes Jessica” Jessica and Bianca sat down, and Jessica said, “I am so hungry. Aren’t you to Bianca?” Bianca answered, “Yes Jessica. Let’s eat!” After they were done eating breakfast, they went to talk with Ms. Ana about the trip for the day. “Ms. Ana what time are we leaving?” Ms. Ana answered, “We are leaving at 11:00.” Bianca said to Jessica, “I’m so full. Since its only 9:00 and we leave at 11:00, let’s go take a nap.” Jessica agreed. Jessica set her alarm for 10:30 and the girls fell asleep with full bellies. However, this turned out to be a grave mistake. After a while Bianca awoke and realized that Jessica's alarm never went off. She looked at the time and read 11:00. “Jessica we are late!!!!” Jessica jumped up, both girls grabbed their bags, and ran to the lobby of the hotel. Bianca in frustration said, “I cannot believe we relied on your alarm. It failed once and now look, it didn’t work again!” Jessica remorsefully replied, “I’m

sorry Bianca. It was an accident. Look, the bus is still here!” They both hurried inside. But after taking their seats and breathing a sigh of relief they looked around the bus and realized…. This was not the right bus! Panicked, Bianca looked to Jessica and asked, “What are we going to do?” Calmly Jessica replied, “Well, we can just ask the driver to pull over.” Jessica hopped up and the driver immediately began scolding her in Dutch. Jessica quickly sat back down, and Bianca said, “Wait, we can call our teacher on our phone.” Bianca pulled out her phone and went to call her teacher but realized that there was no signal nor internet. At this point, both girls began feeling worried, they began to think about what they could do to get back home. Then in an instant, Jessica had an idea. “Bianca, do you have a translator app?” Bianca replied, “Let me see if I have it.” Bianca, however, did not have a translator app. But she did have her translation book. Bianca started looking for a Dutch phrase to help them tell the bus driver that they were lost. As they were piecing together a phrase, Bianca glanced out her window and saw the Royal Palace. In Dutch, she yelled “Pardon meneer, kunt u hier stoppen in het koninklijk paleis?” (Excuse me, can you please stop at the palace?)” But with no reply from the driver, she reached up and pulled the string for the bus to stop. The bus came to a screeching halt and Bianca pulled Jessica off the bus. Complaining, Jessica said, “What are you doing? Bianca replied “Remember, this is on the school itinerary. The class could be inside.” Jessica, smiling, said “Good thinking Bianca.” The two girls hurried over to the palace entrance. Bianca said “Oh no, I don’t have our class ticket. Do you have yours, Jessica? Jessica rummaged around in her bag and whipped out her card. Both girls breathed a sigh of relief and went up to the scan box by the front door. They both held their breath as Jessica placed her card on the reader. The reader turned from red to green and the door unlocked! Then Jessica said to Bianca, “Let's look around to see if we see Ms. Ana and our classmates.” Then Bianca replies “okay, let’s go, but first can we go to the bathroom please?” Jessica said “what? In a time like this? Ugh okay Bianca lets go.” They entered the bathroom and there Jessica looked on the sink counter to find a crumpled-up piece of paper. It was one of their classmates' itineraries! “Bianca hurry, I think I found something”. Bianca washed her hands quickly and joined her friend. They saw that the palace was highlighted, and an arrow pointed to the Van Gogh Museum. Jessica exclaims to Bianca “Look they might be in the Van Gogh Museum!” Bianca excitedly replied, “Jessica lets hurry up and catch a bus!” But just as they arrived outside, they saw they had missed the bus. Jessica said to Bianca “look there are some bicycles we can use them to get to the Van Gogh Museum”. The girls hopped on the bikes and raced to the museum. While riding through the cold city they observed shops and plazas watching the people enjoy warm snacks and activities, they even saw a wonderful group of people in wooden shoes dancing to traditional Dutch music. As they rode Jessica called to Bianca “Look! I think I see the Art museum.” Off in the distance they saw a magnificent building with a curvy glass wall and on the front in big letters it stated, “VAN GOGH MUSEUM”. They rolled up to the museum and ran inside. They were met with an array of beautiful and colorful pieces of art. Off in the distance there seemed to be a class taking a tour. The girls quietly made their way into the museum and

looked around for another clue. Just then Bianca held Jessica’s hand and said, “Look Jessica, there’s Alex!” Jessica said, “Where Bianca?” Bianca answered, “Right by that statue.” Then Bianca and Jessica yelled, “ALEX!” They ran to him and embraced their friend. The kid turned to them and looked puzzled. That was when the girls realized that it was not their classmate. Jessica chuckled and Bianca said, “Why are you laughing?” Jessica answered, “Because we thought that the kid was Alex.” The girls giggled together for a moment and apologized to the boy. They then continued through the museum admiring the many works of art. Just as they were losing hope Bianca heard a crunch beneath her foot. She bent down to see a sticky note. She picked it up and jumped for joy when she realized it was another piece of the itinerary with a timestamp of 4:30pm. She looked at the clock and it read 4:35. The paper read “Lunch at PANCAKES Amsterdam Westermarket 4:30”. “Look Jessica they were just here.” The girls rushed to the front of the museum and looked outside to see a bus being loaded with students. Jessica yelled, “It’s our class.” The girls raced to the bus but just as they arrived it pulled away and they could not catch it. Bianca said, “Come on. Let's get on the bikes and follow the bus.” Jessica responded back, “Ok, let’s go.” When they got to where the bikes were, they rushed to catch the bus. While they were riding their bicycles, Jessica said to Bianca, “How many miles does it take to get to the restaurant from the Van Gogh museum?” Bianca responded back, “Umm I think it takes about 2 miles from here to there.” Jessica already out of breath replied. “Well, we need to speed it up.” The girls rode as fast as they could until they reached the restaurant “PANCAKES”. As they pulled up exhausted and out of breath, they saw their teacher standing in the doorway with a worried look on her face. She was talking with what seemed to be the Dutch authorities. The girls yelled to her and she rushed to them with tears in her eyes. “Muchachas! Where were you? I have been talking with the police trying to find you.” Jessica and Bianca told Ms. Ana the whole story and Ms. Ana replied, “I am so sorry that I didn’t come to find you before we left. We went back to the hotel when we noticed you were not with us and then I called the police and they have been searching for you ever since.” Bianca and Jessica answered, “It’s ok, Ms. Ana. It has definitely been an adventure.” They embraced each other and went in to eat their lunch. The girls were bombarded by their classmates with questions of their adventure. The girls gladly told their stories to the class and they all laughed together. Afterwards, they made their way to the Ana Frank house where the class toured the building together and got to learn about the history of Ana Frank. Some cried and some were angry. But all were glad for the experience. As they made their way through the house the girls made sure to stay close to their class. As they exited into the frigid air Ms. Ana announced to class, “Okay kids we had a great time but now I have a surprise for everybody. We are going to go ice skating right here in the frozen canals of the city.” The group made their way to the popular Prinsengracht canal where they saw many Dutch citizens skating together. Everybody was thrilled. The class laced up their skates and made their way into the canal. Once again hand in hand Bianca and Jessica said to each other, “That was great adventure!”

A Fractured Fairy Tale: The Little Mermaid Written by: Lailynn Joesting Tutor: Lauren Mazzola
Once upon a time, there was a mermaid named Ariel. She was sixteen years old, and she had beautiful red hair. She was known as the best singer under the sea. One day, Ariel was practicing the amazing and difficult song "Halo" by Beyoncé, for her upcoming stage performance. She was watching the news at the same time because that is the type of girl she is. Then she heard on the news that there was going to be a huge storm at 10:40 that morning. Her dearest friend, Derek, was coming over to pick up Flounder to go to the vet because he had been bitten by a shark. Derek was on his way to pick up Flounder and since there was no TV on the boat, he did not know that the storm was coming. Suddenly, lightning struck the boat, and the boat began to break apart and sink into the ocean. Derek was stuck under some wood and he could not get out. Ariel called him to make sure that he was on his way to pick up Flounder and he did not answer. Ariel was worried because he always picks up when she calls. She went up to the surface to see where he was, and she found him stuck under a part of the boat. Ariel managed to rescue him, but because she was a mermaid, when she rescued him, he became a merman. Ariel brought Derek up to the surface and after a few hours, they both decided that they wanted to live on land. They knew someone who could make this happen, Ella, the meanest Sea witch of all. She had powers that could turn them both into humans. They swam to Ella's underwater cave. The Sea witch had underwater snakes to protect her from those who only came to her seeking spells and potions. The snakes recognized Ariel and Derek, so they let them in. Ella proposed that they sign a contract to get legs. The twist was that for them to keep their legs, Ariel had to win "Mermaid's Got Talent," a singing competition. The competition was about to begin. When it was Ariel's turn, she forgot what she was singing and had to improvise some high notes to cover it up. She was nervous, but the judges were so impressed that they ended up pushing the golden buzzer, making her an automatic winner! Derek ran on stage as the gold confetti swirled around them. They had done it! They were going to be able to have legs and live on land. Ariel and Derek lived happily ever after!

My Dog, Felton By: Hayden Heglar Tutor: Madison Melella
I love my dog Felton so much. If he were to run away and never come back I would miss him so much that I would cry for hours. He also doesn't mind being a pillow and he loves to snuggle. My dog is a good size, so can be a pillow. He also loves to play tug of war. My dog Felton loves to chew on his antler. Felton is very sweet and has a personality bigger than his body! My dog loves to give you kisses. If he is in a loving mood and you are lying on the floor, he will give you so many kisses. Felton’s tail wags a lot when he plays and is excited. He looks scary when he plays, but he is really nice and happy. I love my dog, Felton.

Derion’s Adventurous Day on a Four Wheeler Author: Derion Marshall Tutor: Shawn Miller It was a nice sunny day in Wilmington. Derion had on his favorite black jacket and black sweatpants. His Dad had on a matching outfit - all black, his Dad’s favorite color. His little sister had just hit him in the head with a book. “Boy, that hurts!” His Dad came in the room and asked “Derion, do you want to go four wheelin’?” “Yeah,” he said. They decided to ride in the field. “Yes, my favorite place to ride,” said Derion. Derion loved doing tricks on his 4 wheeler in the field. First, they did some donuts. This is tapping on the gas and going in circles. It makes a big dust cloud. He liked doing them in the grass to see my tire marks. Derion also enjoyed doing sideways wheelies. This trick you turn and lean on one side. Riding on two wheels! Derion’s final trick was drifting. Turning and pushing the gas, then you will start sliding. Drifting is best in the rain but still a lot of fun on a sunny day. They rode for a couple of hours, and it was time to go home. He usually wants to keep riding, but we had to go. What a great day!

Watch out for the Baby! By Emmanuel Moronfoye Tutor: Kayla Nunnery There once was a tiger that lived in the center of the earth. The Tiger lived close to lava. He was afraid of Penny Wise. He decided to visit his neighbor named Mario. Once he got there, he saw his neighbor Mario. He was so happy to see him that he baked him cookies and cupcakes. These treats tasted delicious! He was not alone, and he could hear a baby crawling beside him. The baby just wanted to say hello to him and ask him for some dinner. The tiger said, “No you can't have any of my dinner because, I don’t have enough for you!” After he told the baby he could not have any, he said, "However, you may have some cookies and cupcakes.” They had a blast eating dinner and sweets together and when it was time for his visitor to leave. He crawled out of the house. Once he was alone again, he noticed his TV was missing. What happened???? The baby took my TV!!!!

Diary of a Bear By Ethan Woodman Tutor: Aaron Grace Owens In one day, as a bear I have lots of things to do. After a long night’s sleep, I wake up around 7 as the sun is coming up. I leave the cave and start hunting for food to feed all of the bear cubs. I go to the river that is near the cave that we live in and catch some fish. I stand at the edge of the river and wait for fish to jump. When they jump I use my mouth to catch them. My sharp teeth help to catch and hold the fish. As I go back to the cave I spot another animal that the cubs like to eat. I go over to the rabbit, I am very sneaky and quiet. I take some of the rabbit meat and make my way back to the cave where the cubs are sleeping. When I get back to the cave, I give the rabbit to the cubs. All of the cubs are play-fighting when I walk in. The cubs do this a lot, it is their favorite game to play and they always have lots of fun. After I check on the cubs and leave the cave, I start looking for something to do for the rest of the day. Then I remember that I need to teach the cubs how to survive and be sneaky to hunt so they can survive on their own in the future. I get all of the cubs out of the cave and we go for a walk through the woods. As we walk through the woods, I am looking for animals that we can sneak up on. Then I see a deer alone munching on some leaves that had fallen out of the tree. I tell one of the cubs to walk slowly up to the deer, this will make your footsteps quieter and they will not hear you coming. After I let this cub take a turn, I keep looking for more animals to let each cub practice. We do this for the rest of the afternoon. After hours of practicing, we go back to our cave. It was getting colder, so we had to go deeper into the cave where the cold would not get to us so fast. To be safe and so we do not freeze, we go into a corner of our cave and cuddle all together to keep each other warm. As they get older they will start going hunting on their own, soon they will be on their own and survive without me. I am glad I still spend time with them while they are little.

Princess Holly and the Kingdom Story created and told by Danny Frazilus Tutor: Emma Petronella Once upon a time, there was an Elf named Ben Elf. Ben and his dad, Mr. Elf were driving their boat, Bunty, on the water. While they were driving their boat, the most gigantic fish in the whole world, Big Bad Beary, snuck up and tried to eat their boat. They jumped out and swam away just in time because Big Bad Beary started eating their boat, Bunty. After they get on land, they go back into the woods and Mr. Elf makes another boat, he names it Bunty 2. Mr. Elf put a sonic jet onto the boat, so that he could go faster and faster. Ben Elf and Mr. Elf sped up and they find Big Bad Beary and Captain Squid, the evil pirate, eating Bunty! While this is happening, Princess Holly is back through the woods, in the Kingdom getting fairy lessons from Nanny Plumb. The first lesson is that fairies should never be without their wands. The second lesson is that fairies should never fly when there are heavy winds. Nanny Plumb was flying in the sky, teaching everyone else when a strong wind blew her over. She splashed through the water and then fell into the mud! While she was in the mud, King and Queen Fissile, Princess Holly’s parents, asked her what she was doing. She told them that she was teaching the fairy classes, which was great news to King Fissile. After they finished the lessons, they went on a picnic. During this picnic they ate 2 ice creams, and then got into trouble with the magic jelly. The jelly was spelled and when you said, “More, more, more,” it began to flood the Kingdom! Nanny Plumb used her magic to do a stopping spell and saved everyone. Princess Holly tried to help, but her wand got sick. She brought it to the Elf doctor named Wise Old Elf, and he fixed her wand, and put it to bed so it could rest. He gave Princess Holly a new wand, and everyone lived happily ever after. The End.

The Attack of the Squirrels by Kate Crawford & Megan Phelps I have dogs. One is named Olive, short for Oliver. He is three years old. Oliver spins, and spins, and spins. He eats, and eats, and eats, and eats! Oliver eats everything and he never stops! Here comes Gabby! We call her Gabb. Gabby is always sleepy. She’s even sleeping right now! Gabby is happy when she is sleeping. Also, she likes to go on walks and eat. I love both of my dogs. I love them so very much. My dogs don’t like cats or squirrels. If they see a cat or squirrel, they bark! Sometimes, they chase the cats and squirrels. One day, Oliver and Gabby were running outside. As they were running together, Oliver felt something hit him. “Boink!” went Oliver’s head. Gabby looked down and saw an acorn had hit Oliver! They looked up and saw that an angry, grouchy squirrel had thrown the acorn. Gabby and Oliver walk around this neighborhood all the time and they never get hit by a squirrel or acorns. The only thing they’re scared of is the ducks. Now, they have to be scared of the squirrels too. Gabby didn’t want to be scared of the squirrels. To get back at the squirrels, Gabby and Oliver decided to bark at them. Their barks were loud and scary. “Owwwwwww,” barked Oliver and Gabby. Their barks were so loud that the squirrels shook. The squirrels lost their balance and tumbled down to the ground. “Boink, boink, boink,” was the sound the squirrels made as the fell to the ground. The squirrels were now scared of Oliver and Gabby. They scurried off and never would return again. Afterwards, Oliver and Gabby finished their walk and lived happily ever after.

The Aliens Explore By Nathan Lim Tutor: Alissa Queen On July 1st of 2021, Jacob, his wife, daughter, and granddaughter wanted to explore Africa. In order to get to Africa, they needed to use their brand new spaceship. The spaceship was called “Alien Spaceship” and was built by Jacob in 30 days! They take off in the spaceship and it only took them ten minutes to get to Africa. When they got there the spaceship crash-landed! They were okay though because their superpowers stop them from getting hurt, but they also had projectors to eject them from the plane. When they got out of the spaceship they were taken to a building they were not greeted with kindness. The villagers were scared of them and the police were not a fan, so they looked them up The cops thought locking them up would keep the villagers at peace, but jokes on them! Jacob had one superpower than no one else had…. Lazer eyes! Jacob was able to use his lazer eyes to get his family out. Once they were out, they tried to talk to everyone, but the cops kept trying to lock them up over and over. Eventually, the villagers listened and become friends with Jacob and his alien family and decided to help them get back to Mars. The police were not going to let this happen because they were scared the aliens would wreak the world! So, the villagers run to put the spaceship back together. Then just in time, they finished and Jacob and his family were able to getaway. When they get back to Mars all their friends and family met them. They asked them how Africa was and they start to explain the crazy adventure!

Super Ducky By Aubree Lee and Katie Riordan It was just another ordinary day for Mr. Duck at his brother’s house. Then Mr. Duck goes to get a bottle to drink. While he is getting a bottle to drink, his brother says “It’s Super Ducky! He is on the news!” Mr. Duck runs into the room and says, “It’s not Super Ducky!” “That is not the real Super Ducky! He had on the wrong S on his suit! It is a different color!” said Mr. Duck. He told his brother “I have to go home.” He told his brother he had to go home so that he would be safer. Mr. Duck gets home and puts on his super suit. He goes to see why there is another Super Ducky and figure out why he is there. When he got to the mall, he saw that his clone was just acting nice. Then the clone starts to battle him. Super Ducky saw that his clone had laser eyes and he could get bigger and smaller than him. Super Ducky thought for a couple of minutes about what to do while battling the clone. He went inside the mall and looked for a certain kind of hairspray. He found the certain kind he needed. After finding the hairspray, he asked the manager “What is the opposite of this hairspray?” The manager pointed him in the right direction and told him to keep the fly-away spray. He runs out of the mall hoping the clone did not destroy anything. Right when he came out, he saw that the statue of Super Ducky was gone. Super Ducky was so mad he opened the bottle of fly-away spray. He squirted the fly-away spray all over Super Ducky’s clone. Super Ducky grabbed the clone and put handcuffs on him. “Why are you doing this?” Super Ducky asked his clone. The clone did not answer. Super Ducky brought the clone to animal prison. Afterward, the whole town said, “Go Super Ducky!” After they cleaned up from Super Ducky and his clone’s battle, the town built a new Super Ducky statue. It was way cooler than the original. Super Ducky thought to himself, how can I get bigger and smaller and have laser eyes? The End
“I was supposed to say the end!” said Super Ducky
“The End,” said Super Ducky.

Rush Revere and the Trail of Tears: The Meeting of Ahuli, Ama and Waya By Beau Magnus Tutor: Gracee Shore
Meet Rush and Liberty, a man who loves history with his magical, time-traveling horse. They are curious to know about the Trail of Tears and decide to hop back into time to 1838, in the fall. They fly through the time portal and they land in the middle of nowhere. Then they see a couple of Cherokee running. Rush tells them to get behind his horse, Liberty. Then a soldier comes running. “Have you seen anybody, any Cherokee running through here?” “No,” Rush replied. “Thank you for telling the truth, yell to me if you see any Cherokee running away,” the soldier said. “Okay.” Then the soldier says good day and goes back to the trail. Rush tells the Cherokee that he helped hide that it was safe to come out. The Cherokee tell Rush their names. “Hello, I am Ahuli,” says the man, “and this is my wife Ama, and my son Waya.” “Hello, I am Rush, and this is my horse, Liberty,” he responded. Then the Cherokee thank him and ask him if he knows the way to a different state where they can stay. Rush says he knows a place that they can hide, because he loves history, and is a time traveler, and he points them in the way of Mississippi. “Goodbye, I hope that you stay safe on your travels. I will try my best to send more Cherokee to Mississippi to find you.” They say thank you and they tell him the way to the Trail of Tears. Rush heads towards the Trail of Tears with Liberty.

Don’t Give Up! By: Bryanna Tims Tutor: Caroline Szakasits In Mississippi there was this kid named Star. She was interested in gymnastics, so Star asked her mom, “Mom, can I please sign-up for gymnastics? I really want toooo.” said Star. “Sure, let's go!” said her mom. So, then they went, and they made it there in the car going to sign her up for gymnastics. They arrived at Flipping with the Stars. When they opened the door, it looked amazing, and Star gasped in excitement. Before she went into the gym, she bought a leotard. The leotard was blue and sparkly. She met her coach and her coach’s name was Coach Maddie. Also, Star met some new friends and their names were Madison and Bella. Then they were talking a lot. “Hey, my name is Star, what's your name?” said Star. “My name is Bella, and this is Madison,” said Bella. After the stretches, they did stations. The first station was walkovers. Bella, Madison, and Star were at the same stations. Walkovers, handstands, and splits were the three stations. After the stations, they went to balance beams. At the balance beam, Star kept on falling, but Madison and Bella kept helping her up. They encouraged her to keep going and told her to never give up. Star smiled and said, “Thank you!” Bella and Madison both said “No problem. We are always here to help you.” Then, Star said, “Aw, you guys are so sweet.” and Bella and Madison smiled. The girls became very close friends. They started to go to stores to go shopping together. Then, Star asked her mom if she could have a sleepover with them, and her mom said “Yeah, sure sweetie.” Then, Bella got their mom’s phone numbers and called their moms to have a sleepover. Their moms said “Yes.” They were heading to pick them up. The first thing they did was pillow fight. The second thing they did was paint each other’s nails. The third thing they did was have a dance battle, and Madison won the dance battle. Then, they pulled a prank on Star’s mom. They pranked her by saying the TV was broken and put a fake screen on it, but it wasn’t actually broken. The end.

The Time I Made Friends with Bears By McKeithan Cross Tutor: Alex Tyer One morning, it was so cold. So I put on 5 jackets and I went on a walk. I saw a few animals. I even saw two bears, a papa bear and a baby bear. They were riding a sled! They were sledding fast down the hill. I asked them to help me build a snowman. I made good friends with the bears. We built snowmen, made snow angels, had a snowball fight, and built an igloo. But I wanted to ride the sled. I asked nicely if we could ride the sled together. They said yes! The three of us sat on the sled and pushed off the top of the hill. “Woohoo!” I yelled. We were flying so fast down the hill, I could barely keep my eyes open. “Slow down!” said one of the bears. I opened my eyes and saw we were going towards a frozen lake. The bears couldn’t stop us. We slid across the lake, spinning in circles. We were screaming! I realized we stopped moving. We heard the ice creaking and suddenly we dropped through the ice into the freezing water! The bears got out first since they are good swimmers. They helped me out of the water. The sled was still in the water but the bears said, “Friends come first.” We walked back to the bear's cabin where the mama bear was inside. When we walked inside, she had hot cocoa ready. When she saw us wet, she grabbed blankets and made another hot cocoa for me. We got warm and later, we played games. It was a crazy day, but a good day. Since that day they have been my best friends.

“Pokémon Adventure” by Hayden Proserpi and Megan Gill
Prologue:
{“note to readers: this is based on Pokémon game’s storyline”}
I am Hayden, I started catching Pokémon almost a year ago. I have caught all of the Pokémon in the Kanto region-- for example, Moltres, Articuno, Charizard, Pikachu, and Gyrados. The Kanto Region is an island with a lot of towns and cities. My favorite place is called the Elite city. Chapter 1: “How I beat Team Rocket”: So, in the beginning, I was just walking along, trying to beat the gyms. I went to the fighting gym and beat it. Then, I saw another gym, the ghost gym, but a Team Rocket grunt was not letting me get in. I went to another building and saw the owner of the building getting harassed by the leader of Team Rocket, so I fought the team leader of rocket. I won and the owner of the building gave me a master ball (and that's actually pretty rare). I went back to the gym and the grunt was gone. I went into the gym and then there was an obstacle course. Then I found my way and fought the gym leader. The gym leader and I had only one Pokémon left, I Mega Evolved my charizard to a Mega Charizard X and then I used dragon rage and one shot the Pokémon. Chapter 2: Catching 3 out of 4 Legendaries I was walking along when I heard someone talking about legendary Pokémon. They were talking about the 3 legendary birds' locations. So, I went where the first spot was. Moltres was at a Temple. I used Pikachu to use roughness (it makes Pikachu move rocks). I got through the obstacle and used my last Great Ball to get Moltres. I went through, and discovered Moltres is Mexican (because his name has tres in it, which means 3 in Spanish-- and there are three birds)! I swam out of the temple and it led me to a power outage where I had heard that Zapdos was there. He was trying to start the electricity again, and I threw my ultraball at him and got him in one shot. Then it teleported me to Articuno, then I used my last Pokeball to get it. To be continued... Hilton Head Island By: Maggie Crumrine Tutor: Maria Wray Every May I go to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina with my amazing grandparents, funny cousins, kind aunt and crazy uncle. It is really fun. There is a beach right next to the pool. The beach has a plastic sea turtle and super comfy chairs/couch. I do puzzles with my Grandma and Aunt. They get a little hard but really fun. There is a puzzle we did a while ago and it was 3,000 pieces. There is a huge water slide. I LOVE going down it. There are water sprayers. My brother is super scared to go down the slide. My grandparents always have the room right next to us. Funny Papa (my grandpa) takes us on scary rides (or that is what he calls them). Serafina By Jayla Moore Tutor: Tiffany DeLeone Hi my name is Serafina. I’m 12 years old. The people that I follow are people that I want to know more about. My first post is a picture of the estate. The night I saw Clara Brahms go missing, I was terrified. If you find Clara, dial this number: 910-555-8978. I want to know if I have any siblings. I was born in the middle of nowhere and I want to know who I’m kin to. If Serafina had an Instagram, her profile picture would either be a selfie or a picture of her and her Pa. We think her username would be: Sera_cat12. She has long dark hair and catlike features. She is usually wearing her Pa’s big, dirty t-shirt. Her biography would tell a little bit about herself. She is 12, lives in the basement of the Biltmore Estate and gives herself the title of C.R.C (Chief Rat Catcher). Instagram connects users by followers. We think that Serafina would have about 4 followers because Serafina has been hidden her whole life and doesn’t have many friends. We think she would follow more people because she is trying to figure out who the man in the black cloak is. For our first post we chose something that made us think of Serafina. We drew a selfie of Serafina holding a rat and the Biltmore where she lives. After the first post, each post after that we took a passage out of each chapter and drew what we saw when we read it out loud.

The Chase By: Hallie Hudson With a little help from: Clancy Gray (On the tour bus, 2005) Characters: M. Shadows, Synyster Gates, Zacky Vengeance, Johnny C., and The Rev (Matt)
(Syn)
(Zacky)
(Johnny)
(Jimmy)
(All 5 men are from an American rock band called Avenged Sevenfold.) “UUUUUUGGHHH!!!!” “What’s wrong, Matt?” yelled Johnny, startled. “I’m so tired of driving, not to mention I don’t even get to listen to music of my choice!” "Quit being a little punk Matt," Syn smirked, "I offered to drive.” Zacky woke up from the noise, “What’s wrong, guys?” “Nothing, Matt’s being a little baby, that’s all.” Replied Syn. “No, I’m not; I just don’t like this band.” Matt persisted, pointing at the radio. “How do you not like The Beatles?” Zacky exclaimed, “They’re a band for all generations.” Just then, the loud noise of squealing tires was heard coming from the left side of the bus. All the guys shot up from their seats and ran towards the windows to see what had happened outside. Someone in a black truck with heavily tinted windows is keeping speed alongside the tour bus. “What do you think they want?” Johnny asks. “M-maybe t-they’re j-just fans…” Syn suggested. “What’s wrong, scared?” chuckled Matt. “It’d be fair if he was; who’s to tell why they’re here?” Zacky said, supporting his friend. “They probably want a signing, and since I’m the fans’ favorite of us all, I’ll go first!” Jimmy boasted. Everyone else stayed in the tour bus, watching intently. Suddenly Jimmy rushed through the door, violently, “DRIVE.” Matt almost instinctively slammed his foot on the gas, and the bus lurched forward. All the guys smacked into each other a bit from the change of speed, but still, no one took their eyes off the big black truck. “I told you we should’ve hired security,” Johnny stammered in a panic. “It’s a little too late for that now,” Matt said as he checked his mirrors. “Oh crap,” Matt muttered as his eyes caught sight of the same truck coming up behind them. The black truck picked up speed, and so did the bus. Matt’s foot was getting tired because of how hard he was pushing on the pedal. He quickly told Syn he was too tired and flustered to continue. Matt quickly hopped out of the seat, leaving Syn to grab hold of the wheel. Syn knew a couple more driving techniques than Matt did, so Syn was able to go quicker and lose the truck, but only temporarily, because in the rear-view mirrors, the black truck was still following, though from so far away, the truck seemed small. Zacky began tearing up, watching as the truck picked up speed, “what do they want from us?” “I don’t know, but crying won’t help,” Syn yelled from the front of the bus, still driving. “Jimmy, you better start talking,” Matt said sternly. Jimmy had not said a word since getting back on the bus and telling Matt to hit the gas. Jimmy glanced up from staring down at his hands but then quickly let his eyes fall back and whispered, “I don’t know. Something just didn’t seem right about them, and they definitely weren’t fans.” Just as Matt was turning around to yell at Jimmy to tell them more, a huge BOOM rang out from the back of the bus. Just like that, a tire had exploded out of nowhere, and the bus was veering out of control. “They shot at us!” Zacky shrieked. “No, they didn’t, calm down!” Johnny yelled over the wheel cap screeching across the gravel. “He’s right; our tire just popped.” Syn agreed, comforting Zacky. With their popped wheel, the wheel cap was catching too much friction for them to go quick enough, and the black truck was gaining on them. “Call the police!” Syn yelled. “Yes!” Zacky said, pulling his phone out of his pocket and dialing 911. “911, what’s your emergency?” A police officer answered. “We’re being followed by someone in a black truck, and our tire exploded, and we’re gonna die!” Zacky shouted into the cell phone.

“Woah, Woah, Woah, calm down. Everything is gonna be just fine. Can you tell me where you are on the road?” the police officer responded. Zacky spun around to look at Syn, who was still attempting to keep the bus from going off the road. “Where are we?” Zacky shouted. “Heck, if I know,” Syn shouted back. “I’m just trying to keep us all from dying here!” “We’re on St. James Street!” Zacky screamed into the phone as they flew past a street sign. “Ow, don’t scream please, ma’am,” the police officer replied. “Ma’am!?” Zacky screeched, “I’m a man!!!” “My apologies, sir, we’re coming right away.” Once Zacky put the phone down, Matt giggled, “He called you a girl!” “Hush,” Zacky mumbled. “Yes, ma’am,” Matt replied. “This is no laughing matter, you two,” Syn yelled from upfront, looking cautiously out the window. Syn had somehow miraculously slowed the bus down enough to be able to pull over out of the way of traffic. Everyone simultaneously seemed to relax and breathe normally again. “What do we do now?” Syn asked. “I guess we just wait for the police to show up, and we should probably call and find a mechanic so we can get this bus up and running again,” Matt replied. “We do have a show to get to if you all remember.” After a while, the mechanic came and started on the wheel. He also replaced the wheel cap because of all the scratches. A little after, the police officer and a few others came. “Ok, boys, where are they?” “Well, they were a little ways behind us, but… I don’t see ‘em.” Matt answered, squinting at the road behind them. “Ya’ll musta lost dem, shook ‘em off yer tail.” A police officer said, but it wasn’t the one on the phone; it was a different one, with a deep southern accent, he seemed newer to the job. Just then, they heard honking a little ways down the road, “The truck,” Johnny whispered, scared. The police officers stood their ground, their hands on their belts. It looked as if they were ready for anything. “C’mon, let’s go inside.” Zacky quivered.

“Good plan,” Matt said, eager to be safe inside the tour bus once more. After they were all inside the tour bus, out the back window, they saw it, the truck, as clear as day… pulling up behind them. Jimmy closed the curtains, “I- I can’t, not after what they did.” Jimmy shivered. “WHAT DID THEY DO!?” Matt boomed. All of them could tell Jimmy didn’t want to tell, but they also knew that Matt would make Jimmy tell anyway. “Spill it, Jimmy.” Matt urged. “The man who was driving… I recognized him, he… news. He was on the news, he… after the news reporter said he did something horrible, I turned off the TV. When I got out of the bus to give him a signing, he rolled down his window, and... I ran. I couldn’t help it; I got so scared.” “Woah,” Zacky whispered. Outside they heard screaming, a masculine scream, loud as ever. Piercing through the air itself. So loud, Johnny covered his ears. Once the ruckus came to an end, Syn re-opened the curtains. They were all gone, the truck, the man, the police. All of it was gone. Matt dashed to the wheel and drove. “We’ll be late!” He groaned. Once they finally got to Las Vegas, sure enough, they were 2 hours late. Zacky got out his phone, “I’ll update our social media, tell our fans we won’t be there, of course, mid-way show, I’m sure that’s obvious.” “I’m just glad that the whole situation is settled,” Johnny said, sitting on the couch. “Same,” Matt sighed. “Same.”

On Charlotte’s Web By Aspyn N. Tutor: April Hester
If I were Fern, and saved my sweet Wilbur from becoming bacon I would truly like to do my part to save my precious pig. When I discovered that Charlotte could write words i n her webs. I just had to help. First I would l eave magazines in the barn for her. Knowing that she’d be looking for new words to show how wonderful Wilbur is. I would have to do my part to save Wilbur. Afterwards, I would call all the local newspapers and let them know how special my pig is, he’s soooo special that our barn spider is displaying it inside of her webs. I just l earned that my uncle is planning to take Wilbur to the county fair. There I would help Charlotte save Wilbur by inviting people to come see how amazing my pig is. Making posters to help display how wonderfully terrific this special pig is.

Saving the Earth By Kate Crawford Tutor: Emily Sedlack We should stop polluting to save the Earth. I want to help the Earth because people throw away plastic that looks like jellyfish. In the book, the mess that we made in the pictures, we see nets and gross things. To make the world better, I could take garbage and turn it into something useful and I could get people to not pollute. I also want to stop using so much water so we don’t use as much water. Some people leave water running while brushing their teeth and they should stop that.
