SUMMER 2015 NEWS & EVENTS June NEW TERRITORY ARTS ASSOCIATION SUMMER SOLSTICE ART HOP Fri. June 19, 6 - 9pm

OUT OF THIN AIR: THE WIRE SCULPTURE & FLAMEWORKED GLASS OF JESSICA BOHUS Opening Reception: Fri. June 19th 6 - 9 pm (during the Summer Solstice Art Hop)

In the Dorris Akers Gallery through Aug. 5 WSG welcomes West Michigan artist Jessica Bohus for a solo show entitled, “Out of Thin Air” in the Dorris Akers Gallery this summer. Meet the artist at the June 19th Art Hop from 6-9 pm. She will also be offering a class as a visiting artist at WSG this fall. Bohus holds a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, with an emphasis in sculpture. She was first introduced to hot glass in 1986 by WSG’s Jerry Catania at Ox-Bow Summer School of Art in Saugatuck, MI. She moved from Chicago to Michigan in 1990 to work with Catania. Jessica’s studio and gallery – Blue Roan Studio – is located in a historic schoolhouse near Ganges, Michigan. Using steel wire, Bohus creates intricate sculptures that resemble line drawings in 3D. Animal and human figures seem to float off the wall or pedestal and cast intriquing shadows. Her wirework has been exhibited throughout the region and was voted ‘most popular’ last year by the public at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. She has also exhibited pieces in ArtPrize in Grand Rapids. “Out of Thin Air” includes her intricate flameworked glass sculptures and beautiful bead jewelry. Bohus captures viewers’ imaginations as she seamlessly blends her one-of-a-kind, sculptural and wearable pieces into masterful works in glass and metal.
