Michael Vanderwaal, the Fired Up! teen artists & many volunteers

Jessica Bohus Jessica Bohus holds a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, with an emphasis in sculpture. She was first introduced to hot glass in 1986 by WSG’s Jerry Catania at Ox-Bow Summer School of Art in Saugatuck, MI. She moved from Chicago to Michigan in 1990 to work with Catania. Jessica’s studio and gallery – Blue Roan Studio – is located in a historic schoolhouse near Ganges, Michigan. Using steel wire, Bohus creates intricate sculptures that resemble line drawings in 3D. Animal and human figures seem to float off the wall or pedestal and cast intriguing shadows. Her wirework has been exhibited throughout the region and was voted ‘most popular’ last year by the public at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. She has also exhibited pieces in ArtPrize in Grand Rapids.

DOBRILA PINTAR SHAWN WATT THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR TALENTS INTRODUCING: Beth DeCoursey, Fired Up! Program Manager A lifelong resident and graduate of Benton Harbor High School (go Tigers!), Beth has a strong attachment to our local community and logs hundreds of volunteer hours for local community service organizations. She says, “As a mother of a Fired Up! graduate, I know firsthand the benefits of this program and am excited to be a part of it!” An experienced business professional with more than 15 years in project management and consumer services, Beth holds a BS in Business Education from Western Michigan University. You can find Beth in the flat glass studio, working on a fused art piece, jewelry, or a beautiful mosaic window. We know her glass passion will flow into other studios as well! Michael VanderWaal, Fired Up! Business of Art Coordinator Michael stumbled across Water Street Glassworks a few years ago while desperately looking for an edgy new date spot outside of St. Joseph. He was pleased to discover that WSG was much more than a gelato shop. After realizing Water Street also has a commitment to the community, he resolved that he would get involved. He began volunteering in GelatoWorks early this past summer, and it was not long after that he was selected as the Business of Art coordinator for the Fired Up! program. In addition to working at WSG, Michael is completing his Bachelors of Science degree in Psychology at Andrews University. He also works part time at an alcohol and drug rehabilitation center in Berrien Center. In his free time Michael likes to explore new places and sample new foods with his family. 3
