water street glassworks FALL 2013 VISITING ARTISTS Dobrila Pintar

Dobrila Pintar began her fashion career as a senior buyer for an international department store. After gaining years of experience, she decided to create her own line of one-of-a-kind accessories. In 2007, Lillstreet Art Studio (Chicago) became her home in gaining many invaluable skillslampwork, lapidary, painting, ceramics, and metalsmithing. Dobrila’s passion grew with glass beads and was asked by her peers to become an instructor. Since 2010, Dobrila has been teaching a variety of glass bead classes at Lillstreet. A European native, Dobrila was honored by being asked to exhibit her collection at the Slovenian Embassy in front of international diplomats at the 2012 European Union Anniversary Convention. She has also been accepted for the second year in a row to the One of a Kind Show in Chicago.

Shawn Watt

Shawn Watt was born in Anchorage, AK, but grew up in St. Joseph, MI. Growing up, Shawn was always finding different ways to learn new skills and outlets for creativity. Whether it was tinkering with machines or painting his friends’ skateboards, his hands were eager to create. In 2006, Shawn found Water Street Glassworks. After taking his first weekend course, he dove in head first, taking more classes and pleading for a job shortly after, so he could absorb all that he could from the material and the people who taught it. Shawn gained experience at Oxbow School for the Arts in Saugatuck, MI, and Penland School of Craft (Penland, NC) where he trained from Italian glassmaster Davide Salvedore. He began working as a teaching assistant for Jerry Catania at both Water Street Glassworks and Oxbow. Shawn then spent several years as a full time glassblower, cultivating his skills and style at Silver Dollar City, a theme park in Branson, MO. Most recently of Charlotte, NC, Shawn now resides in Branson, Mo. after accepting the Master Glass Blower position, where he continues to work with glass and metal in collaboration with other artists and studios.

water street glassworks FALL 2013 VISITING ARTISTS John Ryskza John Ryskza II began working with glass at Vincennes University, where he took Scientific and Decorative Glass Blowing as an elective. During that same time, John saw an exhibit by an artist whose work included sculptures with incorporated neon lights. John says he couldn’t stay out of the gallery and would make detours in his schedule just to catch a few more glimpses of the moody, aura-involving art. This exhibit, together with the scientific glassblowing class, had such an impact on him that he decided to study neon instead of graphic art. John enrolled in the National Neon Institute in Benicia, CA, where the love of glass would take hold of his life. In Benicia, John immersed himself in glass. He studied neon and flameworking, started fusing glass, and frequently visited the glassblowing studios to watch and to learn. In 2003, John moved to Phoenix, AZ, to become a fulltime neon tube bender at Neon Nightscapes. He has continued his studies at the Mesa Art Center, the Sonoran Glass Art Academy, J Street Glass, and most recently in Murano, Italy. In 2007, John began teaching at J Street Glass. John now owns and runs Glass Phoenix.

Shannon Eakins

Shannon Eakins received her MFA from University of Nevada Las Vegas in 2012. Shannon holds a BFA (concentration in glass) from Ohio State University and has studied at Pilchuck Glass School. She has been an Artist-in-Residence at Museum of Glass (Tacoma, WA), and has taught workshops at Heisey Glass Museum, Glass Axis (Columbus, OH) and M-Space Glass Arts (Tacoma, WA). Shannon has extensive experience as a production glassblower and cofounded the Twisty Cup Pro-Am. Her recent installation,” Forever Staycation”, featured a thirty-foot tall inflatable gorilla, an iced sheet cake destroyed by robots, and rapid, audience-controlled changes in lighting and heating. Her recent projects and works in glass address mammalian behavioral models, desire, and nature’s impact on our visual culture.

water street glassworks FALL 2013 VISITING ARTISTS Barbara Thomas Yerace I discovered glass as my artistic medium in 1980. Ever since, I’ve been captured by its beauty and mysterious nature. Each piece uniquely captures the very essence of fire, light and color. I first tipped my blowpipe into hot glass in 1980 at Carnegie-Mellon University. I've been dreaming and thinking about glass ever since. I've studied glass blowing and lamp working with outstanding instructors and artists throughout the years. I've tried many techniques and have made many mistakes, all of which led me to the next step or idea. My passion continues to be hot glass. Recently, I have combined both blowing and lampworking processes. This work involves blowing vessel forms with a coil wrap and adorning these pieces with 3-pronged lamp worked beads. I view these beads as elements that repeat themselves, creating an elaborate design of texture and color. The beads allow the blown glass to reach beyond its defined boundaries. My goal is that both techniques will enhance one another, creating an object of beauty and intrigue.

INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT Carolyn O’Hearn

I started working with glass shortly after moving to Michigan from Australia, in the early 90s. In 2005 I began blowing glass at Water Street Glassworks, shortly followed by producing a commission in the fusing studio. The opportunity to teach kiln-formed glass at Water Street became the catalyst for not only my development as a professional artist, but also involvement in the Fired Up! program as an instructor and mentor to amazing teen students. This is my passion.
