TWILIGHT IN THE GARDEN Saturday, August 18, 6pm – Sunset Join us for an evening in the spectacular gardens at Lake Cliff Gardens, the home of Robert and Barbara Weirich. Throughout the evening you'll enjoy culinary delights from Tim Sizer and have the chance to stroll the gardens with exhibit curator Susan Wilczac as she describes the earthly and fantastical glass and metal garden sculptures at twilight. All sculptures are for sale and there will be a selection of silent auction items you can take home with you that night. The evening will come to a close with a private concert from Jenna Mamina. WATER STREET GLASSWORKS SUMMER 2012 NEWS & EVENTS GELATOWORKS NEWS GelatoWorks has added new products and more glass inventory. You can now purchase chocolate truffles from the Chocolate Garden, whole bean coffee from Uncommon Grounds, and packages of Ferris nuts. All of these delicious treats, including Palazollo's gelato are Michigan made products and go great in a gift basket with hand crafted glass art, made right here in the Water Street Glassworks' studios. We also offer gelato tastings and special occasion "beads and treats" parties for ages 12 and up. See our website for details.

SPECIAL TOPICS DALLE DE VERRE

(weekend workshop) Saturday, June 9, 10am-4pm & Sunday, June 10, noon-4pm Instructor: Toni Smith, Visiting Artist Dalles are intensely colored, hand-cast ‘slabs’ of glass. Often seen in churches, this rare art form combines jewel-like chunks of glass, chiseled from ‘dalles’ and surrounded by a rough mortar of sand, epoxy and resin. Learn the handson techniques required (designing, chiseling and casting) to create a one-of-a kind, 12” x 12” ‘dalle de verre’ window panel. Bring any other materials such as ladle castings you might like to add. NOTE: Dress for mess. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required for safety. No experience required. All materials provided. Bring a lunch. $210.

COPPER ENAMELING

Sun., June 10, noon-6pm Instructor: Neil Kraus- Visiting Artist In this mult-level class, participants will learn the basic techniques of Limoges Enameling; fusing glass to copper. We will learn how to sift, fire and layer. Sgrafitto, stencils, as well as other pattern making techniques will be discussed. You will be able to several finished pieces and end up with great artwork that is colorful, spontaneous and immediate. No experience required. All materials provided. $145.

NEW!!! INTRO TO FLAME WORKED BOROSCILICATE

Sat., August 11, 1-5pm Instructor: Joe Schlemmer, Visiting Artist This Introduction to Borosilicate (Pyrex) class will go over the setup and safety for working with Borosilicate and give you the basic knowledge to set up your own torch at home safely. We will discuss the properties of Boro glass verses other mediums and the pros and cons of each and play with some pretty Dichroic glass. After demonstrations, students will have an opportunity to work with some Boro to make some work of their own. No experience required. All materials provided. $90.

(weekend workshop) Saturday & Sunday, July 21 & 22, 9am – 1pm Instructor: Kerri LeRoux -OR(weekdays) Monday - Thursday, August 6 - 9, 10am-noon Instructor: Becky Wehmer Learn basic methods and techniques of making glass beads using a tabletop torch. Shape, mold and decorate molten glass into beads for use in jewelry. Learn wraps, stringers, dots, “twisties” and more! Instruction includes lecture, demonstration and lots of hands-on studio time. Saturday, June 30, 12-4pm Instructor: Gina Edwards, Visiting Artist Learn how to make an encased floral bead using the Minor torch. Building on basic bead making skills, students will learn to make and pull a multi-colored vine stringer, dot placement to create flowers, and encasing techniques. Prerequisite: Beginning Beadmaking. All materials provided. $75.

Sunday, July 8, 2-5pm Instructor: Becky Wehmer Twisties are like mini cane for beads. Using soft glass and a Hot Head torch, we will focus on proper heating and handling to get an even, consistent pull. You can then use your twisties to do many nifty tricks. COLD CONNECTIONS

(2-week course) Tuesdays, June 12 & 19, 6-9pm Instructor: Angela Caldwell Love the look of layered and combined metals or the industrial style of rivets and tubing? Cold connections are the secret to putting it all together. Learn the basics of tube and nail rivets while creating interesting earrings, pendants or components for bracelets. In this class, you’ll learn how to cut, drill, saw, file, and hold all your pieces together with various types of rivets. Once you learn these techniques, you won’t be able to stop! This class is for the beginner or anyone wanting a little more instruction and insight into cold connections. No experience required. All materials provided. $90.

VIKING KNIT

Saturday, August 4, 1pm – 4pm Instructor: Kerri LeRoux Learn to weave wire into a beautiful Viking Knit chain. Viking knit chain can be used to make necklaces, bracelets and even earrings. You will learn the technique for single, double and even triple weave Viking knit. When you leave class, you will have the tools and information you will need to continue making Viking knit on your own. No experience required. All materials provided. $65.

PATTERN BAR PLATTER

(2-week course) Saturdays, July 21 & 28, 10am- 1pm Instructor: Carolyn O’Hearn Okay, it doesn’t have to be a platter. Plate, bowl … the final project is up to you. Week one we will focus on learning the process and creating 2 or three different pattern bars. Week 2 we will cut the fired bars and use them in the project of your choice! This is a great way to create a repeating design element, or just use up your favorite color scraps! Prerequisite: Beginning Fusing. All materials included. $120.

LANDSCAPE TRICKS & TECHNIQUES

(4-week course) Fridays, Aug. 10, 17 & 24, 9-11am Instructor: Carolyn O’Hearn Focus on texture, value, perspective and the use of specialty glass as we construct a multi-layer landscape in fusible glass. Prerequisite: Beginning Fusing and some studio rental time. All materials included. $125.

LEAD STAINED GLASS WINDOW: TECHNIQUES FOR PETITE WINDOW

(2-week course) Tuesday, June 5, 6-9pm & Sunday, June 10, 12-5pm Instructor: Mary Jane McNish The first Tuesday evening class will be a “quick learning class” to prepare you for creating any leaded glass window. You will learn what all the tools are used for and practice each step: work surface, pattern prep, cutting, grinding, fitting, soldering joints and framing as well as pattern design tips. During the second Sunday afternoon class you will execute what you have learned and create a leaded stained glass window. No experience required. All materials are provided. $135.

GLASS MOSAIC STEPPING STONE

(2-week course) Saturday, June 23, noon-5pm & Saturday, June 30, 1-3pm Instructor: Mary Jane McNish Join us to make an original stepping stone for your garden. Glass pieces in many colors are available. Come with an idea of what you would like your design to be. ie., flowers, sun dial, critters, special date or memorial. We will also have patterns available. During the first session you will create your design in the bottom of a mold and then grout and cement. After allowing your creation to cure, you will return a week later after it has cured, for a twohour session to unmold, clean up, grout and waterproof your step. No experience required. All materials are provided. $130.

(4-week course) Wednesdays, August 1, 8, 15 & 22, 6:30-9pm Instructor: Greta Hurst Learn how to make various cuts and shapes with stained glass and vitreous glass tiles, glue onto glass pane windows and grout to make a beautiful and colorful window to display in your home. Bring photo or drawing (abstract or realistic). No experience required. $175. Window not included. Bring your own (mullion preferred), or purchase one from us for $20.

GLASS MOSIAC TRIVET

(weekend workshop) Saturday & Sunday, August 11 & 12, 1-5pm Instructor: Mary Jane McNish A mosaic trivet makes a nice gift or a colorful piece to match your home decor. The glass pieces are all ready to go; just a little nip here and there. Bring a 4 ¼ in x 4 ¼ in design, if you wish. The first evening you will create your design on the trivet base; grout/ cement your piece. On the second day, you unmold, clean and seal the top with a water resistant topcoat and take home for Mother’s Day! No experience required. All materials provided. $110.

GARDEN GLASS FLOWER - OR CRITTER ON A STAKE (weekend workshop) Saturday & Sunday, August 25 & 26, 1-4pm Instructor: Mary Jane McNish Make an insect or little critter or flower out of colorful glass and copper foil and reinforce with heavy wire for stability. Then, solder to attach to a three-foot stake. Various designs and patterns will be available or bring your own design. No experience required. All materials provided. $120.

METAL WORKING (AGES 15 & UP)

(2-week course) Saturdays, June 9 & 16, 9am-4pm Instructor: Ruby Miller, Visiting Artist In this class, students will be exploring unconventional combinations of fiber and metal and how one creates meaning in art through their material decisions. The class will explore the application of traditional fiber techniques to metal. Methods will include crochet/knitting with wire, embroidery on wire screen and thinking about metal working in a fiber context, among others. This class will also incorporate discussion of the meaning in these materials and combinations and how ones’ artistic choices build meaning in art. No experience required. All materials provided. Bring a lunch. $225.

TORCH-WORKED METAL

(weekend workshop) Saturday & Sunday, June 23 & 24, 9am-4pm John VanAmerongen- Visiting Artist! Explore the use of an oxy-acetylene torch as an alternative to blacksmithing. Square and round bar stock (¼”-½”) will be used to fabricate a project of your choice. Students will be encouraged to make work within the scope and timeframe of the class. This technique lends itself to vine-like forms. Racks, shelves, hooks, hangers, garden art, sculpture, etc. are all possibilities. Instructor will help you “realize” your individual piece. Saturday & Sunday, June 30 & July 1, 10am-4pm Instructor: Ted Guimond An opportunity for blacksmithing students to make the tools and equipment needed around the home or camp-fire pit. Participants will make their own set of fire tending and campfire cooking implements including: fire poker, cooking tripod, “S” hooks, fireplace log tongs, campfire grill, and more. OUTDOOR OBJECTS

Saturday, July 28, 10am-4pm Instructor: Josh Andres Transform raw, industrial materials into a beautiful, trellis, birdhouse or something else for your outdoor space. Bring in any found metal objects you wish to incorporate or pick from our assortment. Cut, shape, and form steel into a design of your choice. Basics of welding and metalworking will be covered in an introduction, followed by your artistic interpretation of the project. No experience required. All materials provided. Bring a lunch. $125.

NEW!!! HEAVY METAL- CREATING A DRUM

(2-week course) Instructor: Ken Flowers, Visiting Artist Saturdays, August 4 & 11, 10am-3pm Students are encouraged to bring their most artistic ideas in order to design and fabricate a functional drum! During the course of the class, students will learn the basics of MIG welding, as well as plasma cutting and other fabrication processes. Metal finishing techniques to add a more polished and professional appearance will also be covered. No experience required. All materials included. $175.

CREATIVE WELDING

(4-week course) Mondays, August 6-27, 6-9pm Instructor: Aaron Closson Creative Welding is an introduction in to artistic welding and metalworking. Learn safety in the studio and how to handle the tools in order to cut, bend, hammer, torch and weld steel to create metal artwork. We’ll have a couple projects to choose from or you can decide on something of your own. No experience required. All materials provided. $230.
