INDEPENDENT LENS: WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR? Gather the family for a special program celebrating the life, career, and influence of America's favorite neighbor: Fred Rogers. Independent Lens’ Won’t You Be My Neighbor? tells the story of a soft-spoken minister, puppeteer, writer, and producer whose show touched Americans for more than 30 years. In his beloved television program, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, Rogers spoke directly to young children about some of life's weightiest issues in a simple, direct fashion. There hadn't been anything like Mister Rogers on television before, and there hasn't been since. Tune in Sat, Feb. 9 at 7pm on WSIU TV. HELP US RECOGNIZE ‘GOOD NEIGHBORS!’ In honor of Fred Rodger’s legacy, WSIU is pleased to announce One Region, All Neighbors, a campaign to recognize people who exemplify kindness and compassion in their communities. March 2nd is Read Across America Day! Celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday and encourage children to read by participating in READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY, presented by the National Education Association. This year’s campaign celebrates a nation of diverse readers. Visit readacrossamerica.org to access book recommendations covering diverse topics and find other materials highlighting the unique factors that make our communities special and strong. During the first week of March, WSIU will celebrate locally with PBS KIDS Raising Readers Theater performance of “The Cat in the Hat” at Goreville Elementary School and Unity Point School. TALKING BLACK IN

AMERICA

Join us Sun, Feb. 10 at 2:30pm at the Carbondale Public Library for a free screening and discussion of the film Talking Black in America. Produced in partnerhsip with The Language and Life Project, the film is dedicated to illustrating and describing the role of African American language in American society.

Filmed in locations ranging from the Caribbean and Sea Islands to the rural South to metropolitan areas of the North such as Harlem, Chicago, and Detroit, it examines the historical roots of African American Language, its contemporary role in society, its embodiment in cultural tradition, and its essential function in artistic performance.
