GENERAL ASSEMBLY ENTERS HOME STRETCH IN MAY FRIDAYS AT 7:30PM (BEGINNING MAY 3)
Illinois Lawmakers returns Fridays at 7:30pm to cover the final scheduled weeks of the spring session of the Illinois General Assembly. “The month of May is critical to Governor J.B. Pritzker’s efforts to move Illinois to a graduated income tax,” said Illinois Lawmakers host Jak Tichenor. “The Governor is putting on the full-court press to place his “Fair Tax” amendment to the Illinois constitution on the November, 2020 general election ballot,” Tichenor said. Pritzker claims the $3.4 billion raised by the switch from the state’s current flat tax rate of 4.95% will end decades of structural deficits that have hollowed out critical state agencies and programs. The Governor says the “Fair Tax” would increase rates for persons earning more than $250,000 a year, while 97% of Illinoisans would see their taxes reduced or not paying any more than the current rate. “Democrats hold supermajorities in the House and Senate but the Governor will have to lock down nearly every last Democratic vote to pass the amendment with the required three-fifths margin because legislative Republicans and the state’s largest business organizations are staunchly opposed to the idea,” said Tichenor. Opponents say the Governor’s proposal would chase job creators from the state and that there would be no guarantees the proposed rates would not be raised again every time politicians want to spend more money. Pritzker is also asking lawmakers to approve measures legalizing recreational marijuana and sports betting before the spring session is scheduled to end on May 31st. Illinois Lawmakers is television’s longest running continuing coverage of the Illinois General Assembly and is a joint production of WSIU-TV, WTVP Peoria, and Illinois Public Media (WILL Urbana-Champaign). Capitolfax.com publisher Rich Miller, WTTW-Chicago Tonight correspondent Amanda Vinicky, and “Daily Line” correspondent Hannah Meisel are regular contributors to the series.
WRESTLE FREE FILM SCREENING & DISCUSSION Join us Sun, May 19 at 2:30pm at The Carbondale Public Library for a special screening of the Independent Lens film Wrestle by Suzannah Herbert and Lauren Belfer. Wrestle is an intimate, inspiring coming of age story following the wrestling team at Huntsville, Alabama’s J.O. Johnson High School. The program follows the student wrestling team as they fight their way towards the State Championship and profiles student wrestlers Jailen, Jamario, Teague, and Jaquan who each face injustices and challenges both on and off the mat. Stick around after the screening for a community discussion lead by Jerry Richards, wrestling coach at Carbondale Community High School.
WSIU IS SEEKING YOUNGSTERS WHO ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE In January, WSIU kicked off our One Region, All Neighbors campaign to highlight the importance of kindness, compassion, and being a good neighbor. Individuals from across our region - from Springfield to Murphysboro - recognized individuals worthy of the ‘good neighbor’ designation based on their contributions to the community. While the campaign has thus far highlighted individuals, businesses, and organizations working to improve the quality of life in their community, we are also looking to highlight the accomplishments of our region’s youngest helpers. HELP US IDENTIFY INDIVIDUALS FOR OUR YOUTH CATEGORY Do you know a young person working to make a difference in your hometown? If so, tell us about them! Learn more and nominate a ‘good neighbor’ at wsiu.org/neighbor.

SATURDAY MAY 25 A BAD DEAL: MY VIETNAM WAR STORY – 6PM (REPEATS 5/26 AT 4PM) In 1966, Iowa native Jim Hamlyn was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving a year-long tour of duty during the heart of the Vietnam War. Using an 8mm camera, Hamlyn documented his war experiences. Now, for the first time in television history, Hamlyn’s war footage is being released for public broadcast. A Bad Deal – My Vietnam War Story highlights this never-before-seen footage, along with a rare interview with Hamlyn, to offer a revealing glimpse into the story of one American war veteran, as seen through the lens of his film camera. Distributed by American Public Television. SUNDAY MAY 26 The National Memorial Day Concert - 7PM (repeats 5/26 at 8:30pm & 5/30 at 7pm) Join hosts Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise for the 30th anniversary live broadcast of America’s national night of remembrance from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, featuring the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Jack Everly. “At its core, A Bad Deal, is a story of the heart and of humanity, glimpsed in a war zone through the eyes of one U.S. veteran and heard from his own narration. The documentary truly is a timecapsule; and we are opening it with you, for the very first time.” – Mark St. George, Executive Producer, A Bad Deal.
The People’s Protectors – 11PM Four Native American veterans reflect on their experiences in the military during the divisive Vietnam War and how their communities helped them carry their warrior legacy proudly. MONDAY MAY 27 Going to War – 9PM What is it really like to go to war? For millennia, only warriors could really answer that question.
