JOURNEY TO ALASKA WITH MOLLY OF DENALI WSIU is pleased to announce the new PBS KIDS animated series, Molly of Denali, will debut on WSIU TV this July. The program follows the adventures of the feisty and resourceful 10-year-old Molly Mabray, an Alaska Native girl who, with the help of friends and her loyal dog Suki, embarks on daily adventures throughout the Alaskan region. Molly of Denali is the first nationally distributed children’s series in the U.S. to feature an Alaska Native lead character. Each episode includes two 11-minute stories as well as interstitial content – including live-action segments featuring real children and regions in Alaska. The program is designed to help children ages 4-8 develop media literacy skills by interacting with an assortment of informational texts such as books, online resources, field guides, historical archives, maps, and more.
WSIU KICKS OFF THE SUMMER OF SPACE WITH A SPECIAL SCREENING OF CHASING THE MOON Revisit the thrilling era of the space race with a special screening event celebrating the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. Join us Thu, Jun. 27 at 7pm (doors open at 6:30pm) at The Varsity Balcony Theater in Carbondale to enjoy a one-hour preview of American Experience: Chasing the Moon. Guests are encouraged to bring NASA collectibles, newspaper clippings, photographs, astronaut autographs, and eclipse, moon landing, and space memorabilia to share with other guests. Concessions are available and light refreshments will be provided. ABOUT THE SERIES American Experience: Chasing the Moon is a three-part series following America’s epic journey to conquer space - from its earliest beginnings to the monumental achievement of the first lunar landing in 1969 and beyond. The film features new interviews with a diverse cast of characters who played key roles in these historic events. Among those interviewed are astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Frank Borman and Bill Anders; Poppy Northcutt, who gained worldwide attention as the first woman to serve in NASA’s Mission Control; and Ed Dwight, the Air Force pilot selected to train as America’s first black astronaut. The campaign highlights individuals, businesses, and organizations who are working to improve the quality of life in their community via acts of kindness and compassion. Each month, individuals nominate a worthy candidate for a ‘Good Neighbor Award’ based on their history of community involvement and public service throughout the region.
