WSIU is one of only a handful of stations in the country to offer college students direct, hands-on experience in all aspects of the broadcast industry. Each year, more than 100 SIU Carbondale students work alongside WSIU’s professional staff, serving as producers, directors, reporters, news anchors, camera operators, audio and lighting technicians, and more. Graduates serve with distinction at radio, television, and cable outlets in the U.S. and abroad and at high-profile media organizations such as ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, and ESPN.

It would be hard to “eclipse” the activities of FY18 at WSIU. Years of planning culminated in our live coverage at the crossroads of the Great American Eclipse. WSIU was front and center with production support for the NASA Solar Eclipse Megacast seen live around the world. In addition to our production unit’s activities, our outreach and educational department provided children and families with numerous STEM learning opportunities during Southern Illinois University’s two-day solar eclipse event held on the SIU Carbondale campus. Of course, we documented the experience and are already considering ideas for coverage in April of 2024 when Carbondale will once again sit at the crossroads of the next eclipse to sweep across the US. Once the eclipse was behind us, we turned to an exciting new opportunity in the PBS Online Film Festival. WSIU was proud to become a producing partner for the event with our submission from local SIU student filmmaker Kelechi Agwuncha whose film was selected as one of 25 featured in the festival. WSIU will return as a producing partner for the 2019 festival as well. In celebration of the addition of the program to WSIU’s children’s programming line-up, we hosted a Pinkalicious & Peterrific-themed Family Day event in April. Families had the opportunity to participate in a variety of art, music, and creative activities in what remains one of WSIU’s sig-nature events and one of the region’s largest, free public events focusing on children’s education. WSIU kicked off its participation in the Illinois Newsroom Statewide Journalism Collaborative with the hiring of a full-time reporter to focus on health and environmental issues. Working with other NPR and PBS stations in Illinois, WSIU is now a partner in an effort to enhance reporting on specific areas of concern to the citizens of Illinois. Generous local donors helped match the CPB funded project. As FY18 came to a close, we approached completion on the collaboration project that ultimately led to WSIU becoming the public television provider for 5 million people in Illinois via five transmitters, serving viewers across 67 counties. Stay tuned for more on that in next year’s report.

PREMIERED In the Shadow, a local documentary providing a behind-the-scenes view of the activities and planning process leading up to the 2017 solar eclipse over southern Illinois. The film was produced and written by Mark Stoffel and HD Motyl of the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts at SIU. The documentary was awarded top honors from the Broadcast Education Association.

DELIVERED presentations to regional educators at the National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators (NAECTE) Conference. WSIU’s Beth Spezia presented the keynote address on PBS LearningMedia and led a break out session focused on PBS KIDS digital resources for teaching and learning.

LOCAL PROGRAMMING TELEVISION & RADIO WSIU’s suite of locally produed content includes Expressions (local artist profiles), Little Egypt Live (local musician profile), WSIU InFocus (regional history and interests), and Illinois Lawmakers (coverage of the Illinois General Assembly), as well as several student-led productions: River Region Evening Edition, Scholastic Hi-Q, Saluki SportsView, and alt.news 26:46. As WSIU’s flagship programs WSIU In Focus, Little Egypt Live, and Expressions remained on hiatus this fiscal year, we saw the opportunity to expand on our existing university partnerships to create a new public affairs series, On Topic. The weekly three-minute news and public affairs feature premiered on WSIU TV in 2017 and was scheduled as a local feature airing after the Weekend NewsHour. Utilizing a ‘digital first’ model, episodes were published directly to our website and social media before airing on our HD and World channels. In the fall of 2017, WSIU was pleased to add Pinkalicious & Peterrific to our PBS KIDS daytime line-up. Many community outreach activities were planned around the program launch including our annual Family Day event at Cedarhurst Center for the Arts in Mt. Vernon, IL.

PUBLIC AFFAIRS PROGRAMMING WSIU's commitment to leadership in news and public affairs programming continues with our in-depth coverage of the Illinois General Assembly’s legislative session via our Illinois Lawmakers series, the Illinois 12th Congressional District Candidates Debate, as well as the governor’s State of the State and Budget Addresses. Founded in 1986, Illinois Lawmakers is television’s longest running series providing coverage of the Illinois General Assembly. The program provides in-depth coverage and analysis by veteran Statehouse reporters, news features, and interviews with leading lawmakers from both sides of the aisle. Capitolfax.com publisher Rich Miller and WTTW’s Chicago Tonight correspondent Amanda Vinicky are regular contributors to the series, as are legislative leaders, lawmakers, and policy analysts. Illinois Lawmakers is a joint production of WSIU TV Carbondale, WTVP TV Peoria, and Illinois Public Media (WILL) Urbana-Champaign. During FY18, WSIU TV expanded partnerships with the Belleville-News Democrat, The Southern Illinoisan, and Lindenwood University for coverage of the Illinois 12th Congressional District Candidates Debates in Carbondale and Belleville, IL. WSIU also collaborated with regional public media for special episodes of Illinois Lawmakers focused the impact of Illinois’ two-year budget crisis on Illinois families, service agencies, and the surrounding region. During FY18, WSIU Radio produced 8,736 total hours of radio programming (both local and national) including 567 hours of local programming, 355 hours of news and public affairs, and 212 hours of local music and arts programs.

TRAINING THE NEXT GENERATION OF BROADCASTERS Providing educational programming as well as opportunities for learning has always been a central component of our mission. Each year, WSIU provides hands-on, professional development opportunities for SIU students interested in broadcasting - resulting in close to 8,000 hours of realworld training for SIU students and community volunteers. Students work with media professionals from the first day they set foot on campus to gain exposure to the inner-workings of a full-scale broadcasting unit. At WSIU, students take the lead, gaining first-hand experience that will prepare them for future careers in the communication field.

RIVER REGION EVENING EDITION

This quirky magazine-style program has appeared on WSIU TV for almost 20 years and has won over 30 professional and student awards since its inception.

SIU media students provide nightly newscasts exploring the issues and events happening on campus and around the region. The program includes interviews, feature stories, and weather forecasts.

SALUKI SPORTSVIEW Saluki SportsView is a once-a-month overview of SIU sports and airs during the River Region Evening Edition time slot. It has been awarded the 'Best Student Sports Program' by the Illinois Broadcast Association for the past two years.

STUDENT STAFF AWARDS & ACHIEVEMENTS Student-produced programs airing on WSIU TV have been recognized for numerous awards and accolades. During FY18, Saluki SportsView, led by executive producer Jeremy Sneed, won a 2018 MidAmerica Student Television Award for 'Best Sports' program at the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. alt.news 26:46, led by executive producers Ben Giles and Stephen Green, received a nomination for Best Magazine Program by the Mid-America chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Three students were nominated for Illinois Broadcasters Association (IBA) Student Silver Dome Awards: • Phynix Huhn-Simmons, Best TV Sports Package • Jordan Taylor, Best TV Weather (Jordan won this award in 2016) • Saluki Sportsview, Best TV Longform Journalism Programming. This is the third consecutive nomination for the program. Saluki SportsView has won this award the last two years.

Former WSIU Student Executive Producer for River Region Evening Edition

Since graduating from SIU, I’ve been blessed with many opportunities and experiences. I had the opportunity to work with the Chicago Cubs production team as a camera operator during the 2018 season. I am also a freelance camera operator for Program Productions Inc., a production company based out of Chicago, IL. Additionally, I serve as one of two production managers for New Life Covenant Southeast where I ensure each broadcast is streamed to a global audience. Working for WSIU taught me the foundational skills required for live news broadcasting. I learned how to produce a newscast from beginning to end. Not only did I learn how things worked behind the scenes, learning to use industry-standard tools and equipment, but I also had the opportunity to develop as on-air talent, serving as a news anchor and weather reporter.

In perhaps the first test of President Donald Trump’s political popularity, WSIU was a part of nationwide coverage of the 2018 Primary Election. Local, state, and federal candidates were profiled, and issues were explored in an effort to better inform voters before they headed to the polls. Popular Republicans faced challenges from more conservative candidates, while Democrats hoped to capitalize on any dissatisfied voters who hoped for a change. Races covered included Illinois’ 12th Congressional District, which has become a hotly contested seat for both Democrats, Republicans, and the Green Party. Illinois’ 15th Congressional District was also profiled. Perhaps most notable in WSIU’s Primary 2018 Coverage was another collaboration with The Southern Illinoisan newspaper. Both entities’ newsrooms came together to provide expanded coverage of candidates, their issues, and voters’ opinions heading into the March 21st vote.

The Southern Illinois Radio Information Service (SIRIS) is a reading and information service for individuals who are blind, visually-impaired, and print-disabled. The National Federation for the Blind estimates there are about 3,200 visually-impaired individuals in our service area and each year WSIU serves this population via the SIRIS Service. During FY18, WSIU provided more than 8,736 total hours of SIRIS programming and 1,820 hours of local programming which included daily readings of news articles, grocery store ads, community calendars, obituaries, original descriptive arts, and nature-related content. SIRIS reaches approximately 1,400 community members via our over-the-air radio service accessed from a special closed-circuit radio or via a password-protected web stream. WSIU surveys reading service users annually and organizes engagement activities to evaluate existing services and prospective new programming. WSIU works with local social service agencies and organizations to connect the reading service with individuals in need.

ILLINOIS BICENTENNIAL Highlighting our region's role in building a vibrant and diverse state. Illinois became the 21st state in the union in 1818. To commemorate the event, WSIU provided coverage of how southern Illinois played a part in creating the state as it is today. Through interviews with historians, political experts, key players, and others, WSIU helped our audience understand the importance the region played in building a vibrant and diverse state.

Southern Illinois University President Randy Dunn was one of the state’s Bicentennial Co-Chairs. Dunn provided not just context in terms of what the state was doing to celebrate its birthday, but also information on local people, places, and events that were a large part of the state’s history. WSIU’s coverage included visits to Kaskaskia, the home of Illinois’ first state capitol, along with Vandalia, which served as the state’s second seat of government. But beyond the political history, WSIU also explored natural resources critical to Illinois’ development, including Rend Lake, the Shawnee National Forest, and Giant City State Park. Finally, notable Illinoisans including General John A. Logan and others were featured in a series of special features airing on WSIU Radio.

RESULTS

WSIU highlighted southern Illinois’ role in helping to shape the economy, culture, and history of the state. Special features also drew attention to downstate treasures with profiles of the Shawnee National Forest and Giant City State Park.

SOLAR ECLIPSE COVERAGE Turning the global spotlight on southern Illinois. WSIU concluded its coverage of the 2017 “Great American Eclipse” in spectacular fashion. The team spent an entire year exploring what Southern Illinois and the surrounding region could expect from the first total solar eclipse in the United States in nearly 40 years. Through interviews, special reports, guest appearances, and more, WSIU provided comprehensive coverage of the science, logistics, and culture of this rare event.

With interviews featuring The Planetary Society’s Mat Kaplan, Adler Planetarium’s Michelle Nichols, WSIU and its partners helped spread the word about southern Illinois’ unique perspective for the eclipse. In August 2017, eclipse watchers had the opportunity to participate in a live taping of Planetary Radio Live with Mat Kaplan and have their astronomy questions addressed by experts in the space and science communities. In addition to local coverage, WSIU was featured on NPR’s Here & Now, as well as Weekend Edition. On the day of the eclipse, WSIU was a large part of the events. From an interactive exhibit in the Eclipse Expo, to providing crew and support for NASA Edge’s international coverage, to helping host the events inside and outside SIU’s Saluki Stadium, WSIU was highly visible – even when the sun was not!

SIRIS is funded in part by WSIU Public Radio, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, the United Way of Southern Illinois, the Illinois State Library, and from donations from supporters throughout the region.

Following the eclipse, WSIU focused on what it meant for the region. From economic development to historical perspective, Carbondale and its surrounding areas played a pivotal role in bringing the eclipse to the world – and will do the same again in 2024!

WSIU provided a family-friendly educational space for eclipse watchers during SIU’s full day of eclipse activities and contributed additional digital STEM content from PBS LearningMedia to SIU’s eclipse educational website. Parents expressed their appreciation for WSIU's participation in the event.

TELEVISED ECLIPSE COVERAGE WSIU presented live televised coverage of the total solar eclipse from SIU Saluki Stadium on Monday, August 21 from 10am-3:30pm. During the five-and-a-half hour broadcast, scientists and experts from NASA Edge, the Astronomical Association of Southern Illinois, Adler Planetarium in Chicago, the Louisiana Space Consortium, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Citizen CATE, Lunt Solar Services, the Globe Observer, and other organizations discussed the science behind the solar eclipse. They also provided updates on totality as it progressed, conducted science demonstrations, explored topics such as astrophotography, shared safe viewing practices, and more. Our comprehensive coverage included NOVA: Eclipse Over America, The Farthest – Voyager in Space, and a local eclipse documentary, In the Shadow. Filmed by Mark Stoffel and HD Motyl of the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts at SIU, In the Shadow captures the behind-the-scenes story and planning process leading up to the 2017 solar eclipse over Southern Illinois. The filmmakers recorded interviews with local leaders and experts from the space and science communities and captured reactions from hundreds of eclipse-watchers who flooded into the region for this oncein-a-lifetime event. The program aired on WSIU TV in May 2018.

PBS KIDS EXPLORATION ZONE WSIU hosted a PBS KIDS booth at the Crossroads Astronomy, Science & Technology Expo on Sunday, August 20 and Monday, August 21. Families wanting to take a break from the university’s outdoor festivities joined us in the SIU Arena to participate in a variety of activities at the WSIU’s PBS KIDS Exploration Zone. Guests enjoyed PBS KIDS space and science activities, fun giveaways, a selfie station, and photo ops with costume character Jet Propulsion from the PBS KIDS series, Ready, Jet, Go! Families also took a break to watch two hours of looping, pre-recorded, live action and animated PBS KIDS and PBS LearningMedia programming focused on space, astronauts, and the eclipse. The booth included several wall-size divider panels with educational and interactive space content which included images and facts about the moon, constellations, rockets, and astronauts.

WSIU FAMILY DAY Pinkalicious & Peterrific

Fostering an appreciation for the arts. In conjunction with the launch of Pinkalicious & Peterrific on WSIU’s daytime children’s line-up, we thought it was only appropriate use our annual Family Day event to draw attention to the arts! Each spring, WSIU partners with Cedarhurst Center for the Arts in Mt. Vernon, Illinois to produce a free educational event intended for young children and families. Event activities included giant bubbles, book giveaways, art, games, a ‘Pinkville’ selfie station, and a special children’s theater performance of Pinkalicious! The Musical, performed by students in the Department of Theater at Southern Illinois University. WSIU was pleased to continue our longstanding relationships with event sponsors Southern Illinois Healthcare, Mt. Vernon Tourism & Visitors Bureau, and the SIU Credit Union who have supported the event for the past five years. In addition to providing financial support, the sponsors participated in the event hosting activity tables along with event partners the Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois. Dozens of community and SIU student volunteers supported the event serving as activity moderators, greeters, and bubble experts.

WSIU deepened our station’s reputation and our audience’s recognition of public media by sustaining our multicultural community film screening activities which continue to attract and sustain diverse audiences. Since 2012, WSIU has partnered with the Carbondale Public Library and other community organizations to host film screenings and discussions to encourage community dialogue on cultural, social, and environmental issues impacting our viewers and listeners.

RESULTS

The film screenings were widely attended over the course of the year by a diverse group of participants who discussed the films’ themes and provided input about how local residents could address many of these issues in their own communities. 70% of participants increased their awareness of topics depicted in the films and some guests reported an interest in reaching out to elected officials to make their views known. Due to the number of screenings scheduled during Black History Month, WSIU saw a 25% increase in AfricanAmerican and multi-racial participants.

I plan to ask my social studies teacher if Dolores Huerta is in our curriculum.

In 2018, under the Indie Lens Pop-Up brand, WSIU held screenings for several Independent Lens/ITVS films which included: Chasing Trane (October 2017), I Am Not Your Negro (November 2017), Tell Them We Are Rising (February 2018), Delores (March 2018), and Look & See: Wendell Berry's Kentucky (April 2018). In total, WSIU and our partners hosted seven Indie Lens Pop-Up screening events which engaged a total of 279 individuals, 101 of whom returned event surveys. Look & See: Wendell Berry's Kentucky, struck a particular chord with our audience due to its regional affiliation with southern Illinois and Kentucky. The film presented a portrait of the changing landscapes and shifting values of rural America as seen through the mind’s eye of writer, farmer, and activist Wendell Berry, in his native Henry County, Kentucky, which is located just outside our service area. The loss of the rural American lifestyle, the de-investment in small town America, and the loss of natural spaces are issues of great importance to our region. With many of the screening windows slated for spring 2018, WSIU worked with the African American Museum of Southern Illinois to hold an additional screening of Tell Them We Are Rising in honor of Black History Month. As immigration and the economy were key issues discussed during the 2016 election, WSIU and the Southern Illinois Immigrants’ Rights Project partnered for two screenings of Homeland: Immigration in America. The episode titled ‘Jobs’ was screened at The Varsity Center in Carbondale, IL in August 2018 while a second episode, ‘Enforcement,’ was screened at The Liberty Theater in Murphysboro, IL in October 2018.

Produced by Nine Network in St. Louis and narrated by Ray Suarez, senior correspondent for PBS NewsHour, Homeland: Immigration in America explored the politics and people on all sides of immigration debate. The episode 'Jobs' explored the spectrum of immigrant jobs and the complex maze of rules, regulations, caps, and quotas challenging the country at many levels, while 'Enforcement' tackled the difficultly small towns and municipalities face as they struggle to enforce inconsistent immigration policies. Southern Illinois is home to a thriving farming industry that is directly tied to the migrant community and is greatly impacted by any changes in immigration legislation. The region is also home to several universities and colleges who count DACA students among their student body, making immigration relevant to higher education and the southern Illinois economy at large.

VICTORIA FILM SCREENING Season Two Premiere

In January 2018, WSIU celebrated the premiere of Victoria, Season 2 on MASTERPIECE with a screening of the first hour of episode one. Following in the footsteps of screening events for other MASTERPIECE programming including Sherlock, Downton Abbey, and the first season of Victoria, southern Illinois drama fans turned out in full force for the screening events held at The Varsity Center in Carbondale, IL and Cedarhurst Center for the Arts in Mt. Vernon, IL. Prior to the screening, guests enjoyed refreshments and took photos at our “royal selfie station” featuring life-sized representations of Victoria, Albert, and Lord Melborne (who remains a fan favorite in southern Illinois even though he no longer appears on the program). Guests also had the opportunity to enter to win MASTERPIECE-branded items as door prizes. After the screening event, the Victoria life-size character artwork traveled around the region to visit with program sponsor Southern Illinois Healthcare and other community partner locations to create additional buzz about season two broadcast on WSIU TV.
