170 MILLION AMERICANS JUST LIKE YOU

I

f you’re receiving this issue of Previews at home, you’re obviously a viewer of public television – a viewer who shares our vision of WSIU as an essential public resource that combines the power of media with the power of people to strengthen our communities. But did you know there are another 170-million Americans who do the same? Every month over 170-million Americans use public media – through 368 public television stations, 934 public radio stations, hundreds of online services, education services, and in-person events and activities. That’s over half of all Americans. Nationwide, public television has a monthly broadcast audience of 121.9 million people, while public radio has a four-week broadcast audience of 64.7 million people. With an estimated 25.9 million people who use both public radio and public television (overlap), that leaves 160.7 million discrete viewers or listeners for public radio and television. And then there is the web. Network website visitors to public broadcasting sites account for 34 million visitors each month. After backing out the duplicate users who consume public media online, as well as over the air, we attract another 10.6 million Americans, taking the total to 171.3 million Americans who use public media each month. And what do they watch, listen, or read from their local public media organizations? The same things you do. The highest quality programming, independent news, arts and performance series, thoughtful discussions…all the same programs you depend on to improve the quality of life for you and others around you. Hopefully, it feels good to know there are 170 million Americans who share your interests, your passions, and your curiosities – all through their local public media organization. After all, you’ve been investing your time and your financial support for the last halfcentury to make sure this resource is available, not only for you, but for generations to come. Thank you for watching, listening, and supporting. For those who want to learn more about public broadcasting nationwide (or just check the math), visit our website www.wsiu.org and click on the link to 170 million Americans.

hildren from across Southern Illinois twirled, clapped, and jumped with delight when PBS KIDS character Angelina Ballerina danced her way through the Marion Cultural and Civic Center in Marion, Illinois on Saturday, June 11. This year’s event drew a crowd of over 350 children and adults! Presented by the Friends of WSIU, WSIU Public Broadcasting, and the Marion Cultural and Civic Center, Angelina’s return Angelina Ballerina charms a young fan. visit to Southern Illinois Photo: Monica Tichenor. was held in partnership with the 7th Annual Southern Illinois Music Festival. Following Angelina’s visit, the Festival presented a matinée performance of the ballet Giselle. Children created colorful masks and crowns, poseable Angelina and Marco paper dolls, and other hands-on crafts. very dog has “her” day…and America’s chattiest canine, Martha the Dog from the PBS KIDS television series Martha Speaks, certainly made the most of hers during a recent visit to Giant City School in Carbondale. Costume character Martha delighted teachers, parents, and students on May 18 as the school celebrated the conclusion of their participation in the literacy program, Martha Speaks Reading Buddies. The scientifically-based literacy program is designed to strengthen students’ vocabulary and social skills while enhancing their love of books and reading. During the eight-week-long course, kindergarten students (little buddies) were paired with third- and fourth-grade readers (big buddies) to share books, watch videos, and participate in word games and other reading-based activities. Activities included the premier of WSIU’s Raising Readers Theater performance of Perfectly Martha featuring WSIU students Ryan Kinsella, Carolina Badiano, and Katie Tullis, along with WSIU Friends Board members Lane Hudgins and Candis Isberner and student volunteers from the audience. Beth Spezia, WSIU education outreach coordinator, led the children in a vocabulary lesson featuring words from the Perfectly Martha performance.

Casey Parker of the Humane Society of Southern Illinois and several of her staff introduced the audience to canines Chloe and Tapioca and invited children to participate in a hands-on animal care demonstration using stuffed animals. LeeAnn Greenwell, DVM, director of the Southern Illinois Collegiate Common Market Veterinary Technology Program, and several of her students led a first aid exercise and helped to bandage Martha’s “injured” leg.

Students who participated in the Reading Buddies program demonstrated their new vocabulary skills and posed for group photos with Martha. They also donated animal care supplies to the Humane Society. Giant City School teacher Kristi Britton and others were recognized for their participation in Martha Speaks Reading Buddies. Call (618) 453-5595 to request Martha Speaks programs in your community.

SPONSOR PROFILE • Marion Subaru

M

arion Subaru has been servicing, leasing, and selling vehicles for southern Illinois, southeast Missouri, western Kentucky, and beyond since 2005, and has been an enthusiastic supporter of WSIU Public Television since 2008. “At our new location we offer the full line of new Subaru all-wheel drive vehicles, and we sell pre-owned cars of all makes and models,” shares Jeff Mayer, Vice President and General Manager. “We also operate a certified collision center in Marion.” Mayer says the Subaru brand is known nationwide for their quality products, and that this commitment to quality is one of the motivating factors behind their support of public broadcasting at WSIU. Currently, Marion Subaru helps to sponsor a diverse range of WSIU Public Television programs, including Antiques Roadshow, Globe Trekker, Masterpiece, Secrets of the Dead,

American Experience, MotorWeek, Charlie Rose, and many other favorites, as well as a variety of programs on WSIU Public Radio. “Deciding to underwrite on WSIU was a simple choice for us because Subaru has a large partnership with public broadcasting on the national level,” Mayer says. “That makes for a natural fit locally. It’s also good value. WSIU has been so easy to work with and their in-house productions have been seamless. I would recommend sponsorship to other businesses that relate well to the PBS audience.” Mayer reports that he personally appreciates the in-depth and balanced reporting on WSIU, which is why he regularly tunes in to programs like Charlie Rose and PBS NewsHour.

“Charlie Rose has really diverse guests – you can tune in one night and see Charlie sitting down with a NASCAR driver and the next night it’s Bill Gates. It’s interesting to see.” Marion Subaru is located at 3209 W. DeYoung Street in Marion, Illinois. For more information, call (618) 969-8692 or visit online at www.marionsubaru.com.

He explains his commitment as something he believes in strongly. “WSIU Public Broadcasting is a unique, essential public resource,” says Scott. “It strengthens our region and supports the people of southern Illinois. Especially close to my heart are WSIU outreach activities like Raising Readers, SIRIS, SciGirls, Library Corners, and Biz Kid$. Public broadcasting belongs to us; we need to support it to keep it alive and healthy.” Scott notes, “Since my sponsorship began, I’ve received numerous comments – all positive – and ‘thank you’s’ from members of the community. Several of my clients and contacts tell me that they see and hear my involvement with the stations as an underwriter. I’ve also been pleasantly surprised at how many people who support public broadcasting are willing to engage in conversation once they realize you, too, are a

supporter. It’s like being part of a very special family.” Scott says he definitely would recommend program sponsorship to other businesses. “WSIU underwriters aren’t just reaching the best customer demographic in the region, they’re also supporting a critical resource that brings unique, high-quality programming and outreach services to all of us. I believe that audiences respect the shared-values and service-mission aspects of sponsoring public broadcasting.” An avid viewer and listener, Scott enjoys a variety of WSIU programs. “On WSIU-TV, I enjoy watching thoughtful programs like Nature, Charlie Rose, PBS NewsHour, and WSIU InFocus, and entertaining programs like Austin City Limits, Rudy Maxa, and Rick Steves. I’m also a big fan of Ken Burns and his extraordinary documentaries.
