Revisiting the Three R’s

Public Lecture by Former U.S. Senator Alan J. Dixon

S

everal issues ago, I mentioned our start of a new strategic planning process for WSIU. Our first 50 years have been filled with great programming, public service, and student success. As we stand at the threshold of the next 50 years, however, things in electronic media look increasingly different. We need a vision for a public media organization that operates as effectively in this new landscape.

SIU Student Center Ballroom D

Thursday, October 25 • 7pm

We began our planning process by asking as many questions as we could about where our future lies and what public service broadcasting might look like in the coming years. Then we started to align the questions into groups until they coalesced into three key areas of emphasis that we called the “Three R’s.” Here’s how we framed those three questions: Resource: WSIU is entering its second half-century as the public media voice for the southern Illinois region. In order to effectively support our service mission, we must have in place the resources necessary to achieve our vision. Relevance: At WSIU we believe that our future is directly linked to meeting specific needs in the communities we serve. The more clearly we identify needs and the more responsive we are, the more essential we become as a public service organization. Response: WSIU has a 50-year legacy of delivering high impact programming that serves radio and television audiences. However, programming now means more than just television and radio shows. We believe we must broaden our programmatic commitments to specifically include digital platforms, as well as our in-person engagement activities. Developing strategies and tactics to achieve results in these three key areas will determine our success in the coming years. We’ve already started conducting conversations with many of you in communities throughout the region, including Mt. Vernon, Effingham, Murphysboro, and Anna. We’ll soon be continuing these conversations in Herrin and Marion, and we plan even more conversations as we move forward. Ultimately, we want to make sure we’re meeting specific needs throughout the region and utilizing all the tools available to us to improve the lives of the people we serve. And of course, we need to take steps to insure that we have the resources available to achieve our vision. Stay tuned for more on our planning, and of course, for more great programming. Public Lecture by Former Illinois Governor James R. Thompson

SIU Student Center Ballroom D

W

SIU and the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute invite you to join them at separate public lectures presented by two icons of Illinois politics – former U.S. Senator Alan J. Dixon and former Governor Jim Thompson. These special events mark WSIU Public Television’s 50th anniversary, which kicked off in November 2011 and concludes in November 2012, and also recognize the 15th anniversary of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute. Dixon and Thompson plan to review their years in Illinois politics, discuss the challenges facing Illinois today, and share their insights on the political future of the state. “WSIU has a rich tradition of connecting the region to its elected officials and helping foster constructive dialogue,” says Greg Petrowich, executive director of WSIU Public Broadcasting. “What better way to look back on 50 years of political coverage than to have these two distinguished leaders return to the SIU Carbondale campus and reflect on their years of service.” David Yepsen, director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, says “While (these leaders) come from different political parties, each has a long record of successful public service to the people of Illinois. Their presentations will be of value to those interested in politics, Illinois history, and the options our state faces in solving today’s problems.” Content for this article provided by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute. Photos: Illinois Blue Book, State of Illinois. NOTE: WSIU plans to record interviews with Dixon and Thompson as part of WSIU InFocus and to record both public lectures. These programs will air at a later date on WSIU-TV. Stay tuned…

HELPING FAMILIES MAKE HEALTHY CHOICES

D

id you know that 17-million American children – nearly one in four – do not receive food that meets basic nutritional needs due to financial instability? Sesame Street Food For Thought toolkits are addressing this food insecurity issue around the country and locally. These toolkits include healthy living strategies for families coping with limited access to affordable, nutritious food and resources to help teach lifelong healthy eating habits. As part of WSIU’s continuing commitment to children and families, we have featured Food for Thought toolkits in our community engagement activities this summer and plan to continue our efforts in the months ahead.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT IN ACTION Women, Infants & Children (WIC) Graduating SIU Carbondale nutrition student Danielle Farley of Rockford, Ill. provided training and lesson plans to WIC Region V Educators at their quarterly meeting in Mt. Vernon. WIC coordinators also received toolkits to use with clients across 30 Southern Illinois counties.

Illinois Ag in the Classroom Maria Farris of Williamson County delivered WSIU’s healthy living materials to 120 Illinois “Ag in the Classroom” Educators, who received training and Food For Thought toolkits during their annual retreat in Bloomington. Teachers will use the toolkits with farm bureaus, soil and water conservation districts, extension offices, and consumer science classes in schools. Joy Suits, who assists with “Ag in the Classroom” programming in Saline, Gallatin, and neighboring counties, also received toolkits to distribute locally to families in need.

Kendra Buchanan, Local Foods Liaison and Sustainability Coordinator, and her colleague, Karen Fraase, organized Sesame Street graphics and prepared the “Farmers Little Helper” kids tent. WSIU provided 1,000 Food for Thought Toolkits, healthy families website links, healthy lifestyle worksheets, and public media handouts.

ead for the Record is the Olympics of reading – and we want you to participate!

to provide books, supplies, and a reading program to children in lowincome neighborhoods.

Each year, the national early education organization Jumpstart promotes global literacy and nurtures a love of reading by inviting children, teachers, and families to set a world record for the number of people reading the same book on the same day.

If you’re a teacher, caregiver, parent, grandparent, or other family member who loves to read with children, sign up for this fun event at jstart.org/campaigns/read-record.

In this story, a girl named Lulu, otherwise known as Ladybug Girl, gathers her friends Bumblebee Boy, Dragonfly Girl, and Butterfly Girl for some imaginary fun. Lulu and her friends learn about friendship, feelings, and courage.

fter hosting a successful round of Community Cinema screenings this past spring, WSIU and the Carbondale Public Library are pleased to present a new season of films and community discussions beginning this September and continuing through June 2013. Film screenings will be held at the Carbondale Public Library, 405 West Main, at 2:30pm on the last Saturday of each month. Although the complete film schedule for 2012-13 hasn’t been released yet, we can announce the first screening, which will be held on Saturday, September 29 at the Carbondale library. Our first film is Half the Sky: Turning Oppression Into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, which is based on Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn’s book of the same name. This film is a key part of a multi-platform project centered around a four-hour PBS primetime national and international

broadcast. We will share the full roster of films on the air, online, and through other promotion efforts as soon as the schedule is made available to us.

About Community Cinema Community Cinema is a civic engagement initiative featuring free monthly films from the PBS series Independent Lens. The project brings communities together to discuss contemporary social issues and to inspire community action. Carbondale is one of over 95 cities nationwide to participate in the project. Questions about Community Cinema should be directed to Vickie Devenport at (618) 453-6148 or vickie.devenport@ wsiu.org. You can also learn more online at communitycinema.org. roller, resistance bands, a medicine ball, a skateboard, athletic tape, frisbees, golf clubs, soccer shin guards and socks, a softball helmet, softball/baseball gloves, softballs, and football equipment. Strong! is part of the Women and Girls Lead Initiative, a public media campaign designed to celebrate, educate, and activate women, girls, and their allies across the globe. WSIU’s grant was provided as part of Women and Girls Lead for the purpose of conducting outreach for girls and women. Learn more about this initiative online at itvs.org/ women-and-girls-lead. UMIGO teaches children basic math skills using books, cards, iPod math games, construction sets, board games, music videos, and other media tools. UMIGO encourages children to get ready for school, stay on grade level, think creatively, invent, and work together.

WSIU has hosted UMIGO sessions at SIU, Giant City School, Cairo Elementary School, the Boys & Girls Club of Carbondale, Eldorado Public Library, Benton Public Library, Herrin City Library, and The Science Center in Carbondale, with plans for more sessions in the months ahead. Data collected by WSIU at these sessions will be used by producers to create new educational materials for children!
