H

ere is an excerpt of dialog those of us who work at WSIU frequently hear as we engage in discussions about the merits of public television. VIEWER: “We have so many channels of educational television these days, why do we still need PBS?” WSIU: “To which channels are you referring?” VIEWER: “The Discovery Channel, The History Channel, The Learning Channel (TLC), A&E…don’t they all provide the kind of programming PBS was once known exclusively for? If they can make a ‘go’ of it commercially, why can’t PBS?” WSIU: “Have you looked at those channels recently?” VIEWER: “Sure, I watch them all the time.” Long pause... When these niche channels started years ago, they may have aspired to broadcast programs similar to PBS. In recent years, however, their programming schedules have changed dramatically. A case in point, the 7pm listings for April 11, 2012. Discovery Channel: Two episodes of Sons of Guns. History Channel: Two episodes of Pawn Stars. The Learning Channel: Two episodes of My Crazy Obsession. A&E: Two episodes of Storage Wars. And on WSIU: Nature (without commercial interruption). Now, let’s look at 8pm the same night. Discovery Channel: Sons of Guns (different episode). History Channel: Sold! The Learning Channel: Toddlers and Tiaras. A&E: Dog the Bounty Hunter. And on WSIU: NOVA (without commercials). To be fair, these channels occasionally air programs that might be considered comparable to PBS programming. Discovery Channel’s Frozen Planet (co-produced with the BBC) is one example. My point is not to indict these other channels for their programming choices, but to point out the increasingly obvious difference between their mission and ours. As a commercial enterprise, these channels are designed to return a profit to shareholders. They air programming that will draw the largest audience in order to maximize commercial revenue. It’s a fine business model, but it is radically different from WSIU’s service mission. By comparison, WSIU brings you the highest-quality programs across all genres. Think Nature, NOVA, Frontline, WSIU InFocus, American Experience, Expressions, Masterpiece, and Globe Trekker, along with the award-winning films of Ken Burns, such as The Civil War, The National Parks, and Prohibition. Through these and other programs, WSIU provides universal access to the arts, culture, history, and science. We engage people more deeply in the world around them. We open the door to new ideas and perspectives. We inspire lifelong learning. So, do we really need PBS in today’s 500-channel universe? I think so, and I hope you do, too. Thank you for watching and supporting WSIU.

llinois Lawmakers returns with weekly public television coverage of the spring session of the Illinois General Assembly on Friday nights through June 1. The half-hour programs will be produced weekly at the Capitol Building in Springfield until the legislature’s adjournment on May 31. “Lawmakers really have their work cut out for them this spring,” says series host Jak Tichenor (shown above). Governor Pat Quinn called on legislators to cut $2.7-billion from the state’s Medicaid program for the poor and to undertake a massive overhaul of the state’s chronically under-funded pension systems.

“Neither action would be easy in a normal year in Springfield,” says Tichenor, “but the situation is made even more complicated by the fact that lawmakers will be running in newly-drawn districts this year due to legislative re-districting.” Now in its 26th season, Illinois Lawmakers is the longest-running television series covering the Illinois General Assembly. Produced on location at the Illinois Statehouse, Illinois Lawmakers features lively debates by lawmakers on both sides of the aisle on the biggest issues of the day, in-depth interviews with legislative leaders, and expert analysis by veteran Statehouse journalists. Illinois Lawmakers is a production of WSIU Carbondale, WTVP Peoria, and Illinois Public Media (WILL) Urbana-Champaign. Learn more at illinoislawmakers.org.

transforming illinois classrooms: Illinois PBS LearningMedia Makes an Impact

W

SIU and its public media partners around the state have been busy this spring helping to launch and promote Illinois PBS LearningMedia, a free, ondemand media service offering 22,000 digital resources to improve PreK-12 classroom teaching and learning.

press conference

Miller of WTVP in Peoria, Ke’an Armstrong of WEIU in Charleston, Jay Pearce of WVIK in Rock Island; and Clarise Kavooras of WDCB in Glen Ellyn. Christopher Koch, Illinois State Superintendent of Education, recently praised the new online education service. “Illinois PBS LearningMedia is a high quality tool teachers can use as they personalize lesson plans for classes and individual students. Having the ability to go to one place and search thousands of electronic resources that can be used immediately helps teachers make connections with their digital students.”

On Monday, March 5, WSIU and public media partners hosted a press conference at the Illinois State Capitol Building in Springfield to announce the official launch of Illinois PBS LearningMedia. Guest speakers included Mark Leonard, president of the Illinois Public Broadcasting Council and general manager of Illinois Public Media – WILL at the University of Illinois in Urbana, and WSIU executive director Greg Petrowich, who also heads the Education Committee of the Illinois Public Broadcasting Council.

WSIU and project partners recently published results of our fall 2011 pilot study to evaluate the effectiveness of the service. Commissioned by the Illinois Public Broadcasting Council and created by Dr. Evangeline S. Pianfetti of the University of Illinois College of Education and other researchers, the study collected data from 74 teachers representing 43 public and private schools across the state. Results were unanimously positive and confirmed that digital resources help local teachers strengthen connections with students.

WSIU outreach staff member Beth Spezia was present, along with Molly Delaney of Illinois Public Media-WILL in Urbana, Linda
