For over thirty years, children’s advocate and program host Fred Rogers shared his wisdom with families across the nation on his beloved television series, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Although today he is best known as a softspoken, cardigan-wearing children’s television host, Fred Rogers’ career demonstrated the power of kindness and compassion to transform lives and communities. WSIU is seeking individuals who have made a positive impact in their community and would like to recognize their involvement with a ‘Good Neighbor’ award. This award will be presented monthly, with winners chosen by a selection committee. If chosen, the winner will be recognized by WSIU at wsiu.org and via social media. All awardees will be invited to attended a special awards ceremony in the fall of 2019 where they each will be recognized with a ‘Good Neighbor’ award for their outstanding contributions and service to their communities. Community members joined WSIU for a free screening and discussion of the Independent Lens film Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World on Sunday, December 9 at 2:30pm at the Carbondale Public Library. The film is part of ITVS and WSIU’s film discussion series Indie Lens Pop-Up. Directed by Catherine Bainbridge and Alfonso Maiorana, Rumble brings to light a profound and missing chapter in the history of American music: the Indigenous influence. Featuring music icons Charley Patton, Mildred Bailey, Link Wray, Jimi Hendrix, Jesse Ed Davis, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Robbie Robertson, Randy Castillo, and Taboo, the program reveals how these pioneering Native musicians helped to shape the soundtracks of our lives.

Eric and Minnie Bandera. Photo: Beth Spezia.

A discussion followed led by Minnie and Eric Bandera. Minnie is a member of the Tlingit tribe in Alaska; Eric is a musician with a Master’s Degree in Music Theory and Composition. Guests shared their thoughts on music as a social and spiritual connector and discussed what it means to be a good neighbor. Said one guest, “Being a neighbor means, as taught, all things are connected. All lives are sacred.” Added another guest, “Being a neighbor means we all respect. We are all in this together and music is a bridge.” Additional Indie Lens Pop-Up screenings will be held in the spring of 2019. Stay tuned to WSIU and Previews for details.
