Photo: Katrina Stackhouse.

WSIU RADIO listeners contributed more than $14,000 during our SPRING 2016 MEMBERSHIP DRIVE April 4-8, 2016. Funds raised will help to offset WSIU’s $256,000 programming fee this year. Thank you to the 30 volunteers who braved the microphone to host live pledge breaks during the week-long fundraiser! In addition to providing financial support, WSIU’s on-air drives also connect the station personally with listeners across the region. “We often hear poignant stories from listeners about the positive impact of WSIU on their lives,” says WSIU Radio General Manager, Jeff Williams. “I was especially touched by one listener, who said he was 1,000 miles from home, caring for family in southern Illinois, and that WSIU was his ‘calm’. His experience reinforces our commitment to improving the lives of our listeners.” Thank you to everyone who helped make our Spring Membership drive a success. WSIU is Powered by You!

STATE LAWMAKERS CONTINUE

SEARCH FOR BUDGET SOLUTION Fridays 7:30pm May 6-June 3 ILLINOIS LAWMAKERS is back to update viewers on efforts to end the state’s nearly year-long budget crisis. The series airs Fridays at 7:30pm in May and early June. “Illinois’ human services safety net is hanging in shreds,” says series host Jak Tichenor. “Illinois community colleges and public universities are running on fumes as Republican Governor Bruce Rauner and the Democratic majorities in the General Assembly butt heads over closing a budget gap that numbers in the billions and grows daily without an agreement.” “Ninety percent of the state’s budget is being spent on autopilot because of court orders and administrative sleight of hand,” Tichenor continues, “but the fact remains that Illinois is spending at the rate of $38-billion despite revenues of only $32-billion after the state’s temporary income

tax increase expired at the end of 2014.” Governor Rauner insists the General Assembly pass his business-friendly “Turnaround Agenda” to improve the state’s economy before raising taxes, but Democrats say middle class families will suffer because of his policies.

About Illinois Lawmakers

Founded in 1986, ILLINOIS LAWMAKERS is television’s longest running continuing coverage of the Illinois General Assembly and is a joint production of WSIU-TV, WTVP Peoria, and Illinois Public Media (WILL Urbana-Champaign). Capitolfax.com publisher Rich Miller and Illinois Public Radio Statehouse Bureau Chief Amanda Vinicky are regular contributors to the series, as are legislative leaders, lawmakers, and policy analysts.
