Sequestration: A Big Word with Big Impact Before this year, few if any of us had ever uttered the word sequestration. It’s a long word that rarely comes up in everyday conversation, although its Scrabble® value is at least 22 points even without a double word score.

These days sequestration is all too real for many organizations, as mandated federal spending cuts begin to kick in. Along with air traffic control towers, national parks, and food inspections, public broadcasting is not immune. Automatic reductions at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting resulted in a loss of nearly $60,000 for WSIU Public Broadcasting in FY 2013. These are real dollars in a time when every dollar makes a difference.

The challenge presented through sequestration is not merely the $60,000 in cuts. Our funding sources are all interconnected at WSIU. A reduction in federal dollars automatically leads to a reduction in state dollars the following year. And due to the complex nature of our business, a reduction in state dollars leads to a reduction in federal dollars the year after that. More importantly, however, a reduction in either funding source impedes our ability to generate private funds and provide the programs you depend on...thought-provoking content that inspires, entertains, and elevates all of our discussions...concerts, documentaries, and public affairs programming that meet the needs of you and your neighbors. For more than 50 years, we’ve been providing subject matter that simply can’t be found anywhere else on television. With our June membership campaign coming soon, there is still an opportunity to make up some of those sequestered funds. As we close out the fiscal year, we turn to our viewers as we do every year to ask for additional gifts. I hope you will consider how essential WSIU remains to you and your family, and make a year-end gift to help offset the cuts.

In Scrabble , “philanthropy” beats “sequestration” by three points. Please help us ensure that philanthropy trumps sequestration in the world of public television, as well. ®

Thanks for your continued support.

Contratulations, Graduates! Students are a critical part of WSIU’s daily operations. Each year we train over 100 students in all aspects of the broadcast industry.

From news reporting, station operations, and production to photography, marketing, and design, WSIU’s students perform a variety of duties while gaining career-building experience in a complex multimedia environment.

For every skill they gain while working at WSIU, our students give back just as much and more – producing high-quality work, sharing innovative ideas, solving problems, and bringing energy and enthusiasm to the work place each day. Our students are more than employees and future broadcasters; they are family. We salute the following students for their exemplary service to the WSIU stations and thank them for sharing their journey with us. Congratulations – and best wishes for a wonderful life ahead!

The Illinois State Capitol Building in Springfield, Ill. Photo: Monica Tichenor.

Fridays 7:30pm | May 3-31 “Any one of these issues would keep the General Assembly busy for an entire session,” said Tichenor, “but to have them all converge at once in the Capitol is truly extraordinary.”

Illinois Lawmakers, television’s longest running public affairs series covering the Illinois General Assembly, returns during the month of May with weekly coverage of this year’s spring session on Fridays at 7:30pm, May 3-31. [Repeats Sundays 6pm, May 5-30. Also on WSIU WORLD Saturdays 5:30pm, Sundays 10:30pm, and Mondays 11:30am, in May only.] “Pension reform, same-sex marriage, concealed carry/gun control, expanding casino gambling, and medical marijuana are just a few of the issues facing lawmakers this spring,” said series host and executive producer Jak Tichenor.

Lawmakers are also struggling to find ways to cut spending for state programs while paying down an estimated nine billion dollars in overdue bills.

Illinois Lawmakers is essential, intelligent television. Nobody, anywhere, does it better.”

Produced on-site at the Illinois Statehouse, Illinois Lawmakers was launched in 1986 to provide timely, indepth coverage of the Illinois General Assembly. It features on-set debates with lawmakers, exclusive interviews with the legislative leadership, and analysis from veteran journalists.

Scholastic Hi-Q 2012-13 Season Showdown

Iowa. Four teams advanced to the Hi-Q semifinal round – Carbondale, O’Fallon, Cumberland (Toledo), and Carterville – with Carbondale emerging as the winner for the fifth straight year. (Photo at left of the Carbondale vs. Carterville championship game. Credit: Robby Ballard, WSIU.) Scholastic Hi-Q, WSIU-TV’s quiz show showcasing the region’s best and brightest high school students, closes out another successful season this May.

“We had some amazing teams this season and many well-played matches,” says student producer John Guberud, a Radio-TV major from Bettendorf,

The series is widely respected throughout the state, says Rich Miller (photo below), editor and publisher of the influential political newsletter “Capitol Fax” and frequent contributor on the set of Illinois Lawmakers.

Sadly, it’s time to say ‘goodbye’ to SIU Cinema & Photography student Ryan Dosier who served as series host for three years and graduates from SIU in May. “My experience on Scholastic Hi-Q and at WSIU was infinitely rewarding. The experience I gained was unlike any I could have received anywhere else,”

Rich Miller, Editor/Publisher Capitol Fax

“Illinois Lawmakers is essential, intelligent television,” says Miller. “The program’s consistent commitment to quality raises it above all others. Simply put, nobody, anywhere, does it better.”

Illinois Lawmakers is a co-production of WSIU Carbondale, WTVP Peoria, and Illinois Public Media at UrbanaChampaign. Watch previous episodes of the series online at http:// illinoislawmakers.org.

Scholastic Hi-Q Finals Semifinal 1: Carbondale vs. O’Fallon – Sunday, May 12, 5:30pm (repeats 5/19, 9:30am) Semifinal 2: Cumberland (Toledo) vs. Carterville – Sunday, May 19, 5:30pm (repeats 5/26, 9:30am) Championship: Carbondale vs. Carterville – Sunday, May 26, 5:30pm (repeats 6/2, 9:30am)

says Dosier. “The crew is endlessly knowledgeable, talented, and passionate about what they do. Thanks to everyone at WSIU and all of my colleagues at Scholastic Hi-Q for three fantastic years.”

Turning the Spotlight on Our Region WSIU InFocus Cited as Fan Favorite By Viewers About WSIU InFocus “I love WSIU InFocus – the content, the production quality, and more,” says station member Aldona Johnson of Carbondale, Ill. Fellow supporter Joseph Kazda of Marion, Ill. also cites WSIU InFocus as one of his favorite programs on WSIU-TV.

Our viewers often tell us how much they value the role WSIU InFocus plays in showcasing our region’s history, people, places, events, and issues. Local stories, well told, have the power to inspire a shared sense of place and purpose – a key reason why WSIU InFocus continues to be the anchor of our local programming schedule. Plus, we simply enjoy the opportunity to shine a light on the special qualities of our region and the people in it!

Hosted by Roz Rice, Communications Coordinator for Southern Illinois Healthcare, and George Norwood, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the southern district of Illinois, WSIU InFocus has turned the spotlight on local events and landscapes, community issues, education, healthcare, artists, writers, musicians, legislators, historians, inventors, scientists, entrepreneurs, and countless organizations and community-minded individuals who visit the region or call it home. Since the series must be able to respond to timely issues, interview opportunities with visitors to the region, and fastbreaking stories as they arise, we typically don’t have specific episode titles or details in time to share in Previews. Fortunately, our producers have been able to catalog new episode content, finalize the segments, and schedule them to air in the time frame covered in this issue of Previews – giving us an opportunity to, well…focus on our own WSIU InFocus! We hope you’ll be able tune in or record the episodes listed on this page. If you have content ideas, please share them at (618) 453-6156 or infocus@wsiu.org.

We also talk with Maureen Doran of Murphysboro, Ill., who has been pedaling daily to her job as a histologist at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale for nearly 30 years.

May 9, 9:30pm WSIU InFocus: John Shimkus (repeats 5/12, 11:30am; 5/17, 5pm) Collinsville Republican Congressman John Shimkus talks with Jak Tichenor and Jennifer Fuller about the latest news from Capitol Hill and its impact on southern Illinois communities.

The SIU College of Mass Communication & Media Arts (MCMA) and WSIU are excited to bring the Prix Jeunesse Suitcase of international, award-winning children’s TV programs to southern Illinois libraries this summer! These programs are the highest quality in children’s television worldwide and

fit perfectly with the Illinois Library Association’s 2013 summer reading program theme, “Have Book, Will Travel”. The films were produced by children’s media experts, are subtitled in English, and are highly entertaining for families with children in preschool through high school.

Dr. Dafna Lemish, Professor of Communications and Interim Dean of MCMA, is the academic advisor for this program. Dr. Lemish is an international scholar and editor of The Journal of Children and Media. Screenings and discussions will be facilitated by Beth Spezia, WSIU Outreach Coordinator.

MCMA and WSIU are working with the SIU Center for International Education to bring individuals from countries represented in the films to the public library screenings where they will answer children’s questions and offer insight about the culture and traditions of their homeland. Children will vote on the films they like best by placing a heart sticker on a map of the world. Special book titles corresponding to the countries shown in the programs will be featured. A schedule of library screenings and featured programs will be posted soon at http://mcma.siu.edu.

PBS KIDS Comes to the Family

WSIU On the Road

Study Room at SIU’s Morris Library When WSIU was invited by SIU Non-Traditional Student Services to help solve a problem involving a drab study area, we rose to the challenge and the result is an inspiring new space where SIU students with children can study at Morris Library! The new and improved Family Study Room on Morris Library’s third floor proves that “any time is

learning time” at SIU. A new PBS KIDS rug, books, posters, activity sheets, and links to educational web resources make learning fun for kids while their parents are studying. Our thanks goes to student assistant Jamie Eader for her creative thinking, graduate assistant Prince Robertson for his support, and SIU coordinator Deborah Barnett for making this project a reality!
