SIRIS Volunteer Profile: Jim DeYoung “We are called to help those who can’t help themselves,” DeYoung said. He has volunteered for SIRIS for quite some time and appreciates being a part of the service. “I love to read,” he said. “For me to bring the news to other people to enjoy is a privilege.” SIRIS Volunteer James DeYoung. Meet SIRIS volunteer Jim DeYoung from Marion, Illinois. DeYoung always had an interest in radio, but his career path led him toward education instead of media. Now, as a retired school superintendent, DeYoung has found his way back to his passion by volunteering with SIRIS.

Aside from SIRIS, DeYoung also spends a considerable amount of time volunteering for the New Life Seniors group at his church, the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, and with the Shawnee Alliance for Seniors. Like many SIRIS volunteers, DeYoung is a fan of public radio and enjoys listening to classical music and the variety of news shows, with one

of his favorites being All Things Considered. “I really appreciate public broadcasting because they provide information without a lot of editorial commenting,” he said. DeYoung is a dedicated volunteer, and WSIU and SIRIS would like to thank him for his service to the community. We also would like to congratulate him and his wife, Kathryn, on their 50th wedding anniversary and offer our best wishes for many more years of happiness. To learn more about becoming a SIRIS volunteer, call (618) 453-2808 or visit us online at wsiu.org. Just click on the SIRIS tab.

“Rethinking Retirement” with All Things Considered This June, All Things Considered takes a look at the present and future of retirement in the weeklong series Rethinking Retirement on the air and online at www.npr.org. The series will focus on the first generation of 401K users, who are preparing to retire, and the stock market’s fall, which has meant that many accounts are insufficient to support basic retirement. NPR News will explore the new future of life after work, and what retirement means to people who are now in their 60s, 50s and 40s. Is the 401K model broken? How will Social Security survive? Listeners will share their stories and ask questions, and experts will try to provide answers some of the problems they are currently facing. Be sure to tune in for the stories and discussions surrounding retirement and what it means for you.

WSIU is my source for Car Talk and Michael Feldman’s Whad’Ya Know? - Tammy Gwaltney, Cape Girardeau, MO

Public broadcasting has some thing for everyo ne. For Tammy Gwaltney, WSIU Radio is a source for laughter. “Saturday mornings are my quiet time,” she says. “When I’ve had a really intense week at work, I like to listen to Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers, talk about car repairs, of which I know nothing; they are just so funny.” Gwaltney is also a fan of Whad’Ya Know? “I love Michael Feldman,” she says. “He is a such bright comedian and is so ‘on’. Michael Feldman reminds me of a modern day Groucho Marx; he just has that quick wit, that quick humor – I love that.” Share your story online at wsiu.org/mysource.
