“It’s truly an honor to serve on the Board of Directors of National Public Radio,” Petrowich said. “I look forward to helping this vital organization during a challenging period for all media organizations.”
Petrowich hopes his experience managing three stations that serve smaller and mostly rural areas will help maintain the diversity of perspectives that are the foundation of everything NPR does. Petrowich has more than 18 years of experience in public broadcasting. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Radio-Television from SIUC in 1991.

ccording to JoAnn Rice, Corporate Training and Development Officer, Shawnee Health Service and Development Corporation (SHSDC) has fostered the development of health and social services in southern Illinois since 1971. Under the SHSDC umbrella, 14 community health centers and various special programs offer comprehensive medical, dental, behavioral health, and social services tailored to the communities they serve.
health care to ensure that income or lack of insurance is not a barrier to care. Through grant funding from the U.S. Public Health Service Bureau of Primary Health Care, SHSDC is able to provide discounts for services at their community health centers.
According to Rice, response has been good. “People tell us that they hear our messages and our employees also like hearing us on public radio. I’d recommend that other businesses take a look at WSIU to see how it can help them reach the community.”
Shawnee Health Services currently underwrites WSIU Radio news programming, including Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and Fresh Air. Rice says it’s a natural partnership because Shawnee Health Services and WSIU share a commitment to meet local needs and to serve all facets of the community. “Public radio is important because it provides an avenue in society for information and communication to citizens.”
JoAnn also notes that, “My husband and I listen every weekend to Car Talk and Whad’Ya Know? -- it’s just not Saturday without that on in our household!” Executive Director Patsy Jensen counts Morning Edition and All Things Considered among her daily favorites, and notes that Illinois Week in Review helps listeners to stay abreast of Illinois state news.
“We were interested in underwriting because we felt that WSIU Radio listeners were from all sectors of the community ranging from professionals who connect and refer our services, to the individuals who use our services.”

Underwriter Profile: Hudgins Orthodontics
J
oe Hudgins, D.D.S, M.S., grew up in the Carbondale/Murphysboro area, then left to pursue his dental studies, orthodontics residency, and to serve in the United States Navy. He returned to Southern Illinois 17 years ago to establish his practice in Carbondale and Marion. Dr. Hudgins believes when it comes to orthodontic care, experience matters. With twenty years of experience, he remains committed to ongoing education to stay at the forefront of his profession. A member of many professional societies and Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, Hudgins expresses his philosophy as, “We treat children, adolescents, and adults of all ages with a caring, relaxed approach to assess you or your child’s smile and help you find the orthodontic treatment plan that is right for you and for them.”
Dr. Hudgins offers several options that he defines as leading-edge care, including Invisalign® clear aligners, a virtually invisible series of clear, removable aligners to straighten teeth and improve smiles. Insignia® is an interactive, computerized system of orthodontic appliances designed to give each patient a truly customized smile while reducing treatment time. The Damon® braces system is designed to allow teeth to move more comfortably and easily than traditional braces, with fewer and shorter appointments, which typically reduces treatment time. “This station has woven itself into the lives of people in our area,” says Joe. “We depend on WSIU for timely, innovative, and in-depth news coverage on a local, nationwide, and world stage. It is diverse and thought-provoking. In addition, the

SIRIS Volunteer Profile: Eugene Timpe
M
eet Eugene Timpe, a former professor of German at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC). Originally from California, Timpe came to Carbondale in 1972 as an instructor in the College of Liberal Arts. Known for developing SIUC’s Bachelor of Arts program for Foreign Language and International Trade (FLIT) in 1986, Timpe has contributed significantly to the University and the cultivation of its students.
Timpe’s support of SIRIS corresponds with his interest in community service. An avid fan of public broadcasting, he strongly believes it plays a vital role in society. “We need an unbiased form of information…one that is not slanted by any kind of economic or political considerations,” he states. “We can get that through public broadcasting more than anywhere else.“
After 29 years of teaching, Timpe retired in 2001 and began to invest his time volunteering with various organizations, such as the Southern Illinois Radio Information Service (SIRIS).
With his strong preference for public broadcasting over network media, it is no surprise that Timpe is a fan of WSIU’s programming. He enjoys Classical Music on WSIU Radio and BBC presentations on WSIU-TV.
As an on-air reader with SIRIS, Timpe feels that the organization’s service is beneficial to the community. “SIRIS presents information to a niche group of people who are unable to read printed material for one reason or another. (SIRIS) fills that void.”
In addition to volunteering with SIRIS, Timpe is an active supporter of the Humane Society of Southern Illinois. He also continues to write and publish articles in scholarly journals that relate to his area of research of 18th Century German and Austrian Literature.

When he is not volunteering or writing, Timpe can be found skiing, sailing, and windsurfing. Learn how you can give back to your community as a SIRIS volunteer by calling (618) 453-2808 or clicking on the SIRIS tab online at wsiu.org.
