November Highlights NEW SEASON OF LOCAL FILM SCREENINGS! WSIU is pleased to present another thought-provoking broadcast season of INDEPENDENT LENS and complementary community screenings in partnership with the Carbondale Public Library. Formerly known as Community Cinema, the monthly engagement series has been renamed INDIE LENS POP-UP to strengthen the bond between the awardwinning PBS series Independent Lens and local communities, and to bring new energy and new audiences to the broadcasts and local events. Featuring documentaries seen on Independent Lens, Indie Lens Pop-Up draws local residents, leaders, and organizations to discuss what matters most, from newsworthy topics to family and relationships. Our first film screening will feature AUTISM IN LOVE and will take place on SAT, NOV 21 at 2:30pm at the Carbondale Public Library, 405 West Main. In this film, four adults at different places on the autism spectrum open up their personal lives as they navigate dating and romantic relationships. Eye-opening, first-person portrayals show that despite many challenges faced by those with autism, love can find a way.

Parent and Educator Toolkit for Children With Autism
Among the artists featured are Kiri Te Kanawa, Hilary Hahn, and the San Francisco Symphony. A collaboration between the WFMT Radio Network and Radio New Zealand Concert, TALOA is supported by the MacArthur Foundation and produced by David Schulman, creator of the award-winning “Musicians in Their Own Words” series.
THOMAS & FRIENDS, the popular animated PBS KIDS series, has created an Autism Educator Toolkit designed for children with autism spectrum disorders. Educators are invited to contact WSIU at outreach@wsiu.org or call (618) 453-5595 for a free toolkit (while supplies last). Parents and educators can use the toolkit to support development of important socialemotional skills while tapping into these students’ strengths and interests.
Please note: Throughout the series, the term “American Indian” is used rather than “Native American.” This reflects the preference of a majority of American Indians (as shown in a national survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor), and the usage of perhaps the most prominent institution of American Indian culture – the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian. Award-winning television producer, director, and SIU Radio-TV-Digital Media associate professor Jan Thompson discusses her latest documentary film, NEVER THE SAME: THE PRISONER OF WAR EXPERIENCE. The film tells the powerful stories of American POWs imprisoned by the Japanese during WWII. Thompson interviewed nearly 100 former POWs over the past 20 years to produce a harrowing, first-person account of the brutality they and their comrades experienced. Narrator Loretta Swit enlisted many of her famous friends to voice some of the parts of the film’s leading figures. Swit talks with Jak Tichenor about her role in the film in an interview recorded at a packed public screening in Carbondale in October of 2015.
