The F word Ethereal and Timeless Botticelli’s Venus was once the Western ideal of beauty and for the most part it still is. Blonde, slender, long hair, with a tranquil half smile. Just look at any celebrity photo and you will notice this pattern eventually emerge. It is so deeply ingrained in our psyche. How about the rest of the world, are there universally accepted standards of beauty? Or are those standards specific to any one culture? In all cultures, symmetric faces are considered more beautiful than asymmetric ones and clear skin is also a universal preference. But other than that, different cultures value one aspect more than the other. The experiments on social media prove that fact. No matter how you slice and dice it, we all like to look good and smell good. During medieval times, noblewomen swallowed arsenic and dabbed on bat’s blood to improve their complexions. The desire to be beautiful is as ancient as civilization often accompanied by pain that it causes in order to achieve the ideal. In today’s world the beauty industry seemingly provides “hope in a jar” as coined by the founder of Revlon. This industry is $160 billion strong and growing stronger every year. Americans spend more each year on beauty than on education. Sobering fact isn’t it? It is an industry that is built on products and services that help us look our best – whatever that may be. The challenge for this issue is capturing the many beautiful women who not only exude the physical aspect of beauty but also embody the ever-changing definition and standard of beauty which has evolved and been redefined as health, self-esteem and empowerment.
If we had all the time in the world, we’d have everyone’s face featured here. There are just so many beautiful women out there that it would take forever to capture their beauty with our cameras. Today’s women have all the science and technology at their disposal to help them achieve their goal of their perception and definition of beauty regardless of age, or economic position. That being said, many still miss the mark by focusing on just the outward possibilities because no amount of beauty products can make up for an ugly attitude or mean spirit and disposition. But hey, this is the beauty issue so we want to concentrate on inspiring men and especially young women (that’s right I’m talking to all the WOMEN out there!) into achieving their potential. They key of course is similar to photography, you have to keep everything in focus. John Austin joins us again for this issue by focusing on the part of a woman’s anatomy that best manifests and expresses that beauty – the face. John truly has a knack for capturing the beauty, honesty, and unpretentiousness in his subject matter. To all the beautiful women of the world, let your beauty be ethereal and timeless just like the Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa or Botticelli’s Venus. Finally, nothing is more beautiful than being able to share and impart womanly wisdom and charm to her little ones. “Success is most often achieved by those who don't know that failure is inevitable.” ― Coco Chanel, Believing in Ourselves: The Wisdom of Women

MORE THAN SKIN DEEP by Alyssa Perez
What is beauty? Is it the person staring back at you in the mirror? Completely natural, or all dolled up? Maybe it’s the person others see when they look at you. Could it be the hobbies you partake in? Or the things you have. Is it the family and friends you surround yourself with? It’s possible, it’s a combination of them all or simply none of the above. For me, it is putting my own artistic spin and passion into everything I do. The way I love my friends and family. How I dress. How I do my makeup. The quality of work I provide. Painting what I feel, even if I never share it with everyone and taking a moment to drink in the fresh air of the great outdoors. Looking up at the clouds and stars in admiration of the vast universe I get to be a part of. It’s standing confidently on the beach in a bikini with all the scars, stretch marks and freckles without a single care. It’s remembering to be thankful for the bad because it makes me appreciate the good that much more. In today’s world, I see so many opinions. “Your look is wrong. You shouldn’t vote for that person. I can’t believe you’re wearing that. They don’t believe in God. They’re not environmentally friendly. That person is a dork. Intelligent but socially awkward. Beautiful but not brainy. I don’t like your music.” And it goes on and on... The truth is, the most beautiful part of life, is engaging with people for all their unique quirks. Having a garden full of many different kind of flowers, rather than only a field of one. Accepting others for exactly who they are, as well as yourself, for who you are. True beauty is loving the style and art of each individual around you. True beauty is doing the same for yourself. And living a life that causes that true beauty to be contagious to others. While I know the magazine is about fashion and trends, I decided to take a break from the vanity for this issue to encourage each and every one of you to remember that beauty, isn’t skin deep.
