Mirror mirror on the wall... Who’s the fairest of them all! The beauty industry is a $445 Billion goldmine industry. This industry is predicted to grow to a $750 Billion industry by 2024. Recent estimates by Forbes indicate at least 40 beauty startups started by women with the barriers to entry very low. Women are being bombarded with beauty advertisements aimed at this selfie-absorbed generation. In this day and age, the increasing exposure through social media, works well for these brands who seek influencers. And women are responding by seeking out brands that offer them not only good products but companies that are cognizant of the cultural issues associated with moving the standard of beauty that encompasses all types of women. The pre-dominant social media platform that helps women to engage with these brands is the one that encourages the selfie and telling stories via photos -- Instagram. You probably haven’t heard of Glossier. Their motto is “Beauty products inspired by real life”. Their SOHO store doesn’t expect you to buy their products. Instead, they encourage you to take a lot of selfies with their products to encourage your friends (and followers) to buy those products. They understand the concept of virality. Now how cool is that? Nothing is more powerful than the influence of friends and family when it comes to which products you’re supposed to purchase and make a difference in your life especially when it comes to beauty.
Now tell me -- what woman doesn’t want to look good and feel beautiful? Nothing inspires better than the shared positive experiences of other women who actively promote the beauty products that have affected their lives. The way to inspire confidence in women is not to flatter them with sweet nothings. The best way is to show them that you care and that your brand’s products were designed with their unique passions and behaviors in mind. Today’s standard of beauty has changed. A psychological idea is in play. It’s called “The Exposure Effect”. The idea is that the more we are exposed to an idea or ideal, the more we gravitate towards it and the more we are attracted to it. Instead of the past’s exclusive approach, we are now seeing a more inclusive approach to beauty standards. Do mirrors lie or tell the truth? Have you looked at the mirror lately? What do you see? You see but a reflection of yourself. No one is perfect. Even those we uphold as ideals of beauty often do not think of themselves as beautiful. Perhaps it’s about time we examine ourselves in front of the mirror and take stock and come to terms with who we really are. True beauty comes from within. True beauty inspires. Be an inspiration and bring out the beauty in others and others will find the beauty in you and then you will recognize who is the fairest of them all.
