Saving Lives Fall ushers in Fashion Month beginning with New York Fashion week and ending with Paris Fashion Week. In the local scene, two major runway shows featuring local designers, models, hair and make up artists, and supported by photographers and many volunteers cater to the local community. Runway Renegades, started 11 years ago by Ronnie Ryno with her husband Kevin Ryno, has featured six local designers every year showcasing their skill and design talent with a collection on the catwalk. Runway Renegades provides scholarships and grants for the local fashion community to pursue their career and design aspirations. Beyond Pink, started 9 years ago by Charlie Brewer and Karla Schubach has also been going strong and has raised a tremendous amount of money for thermography screening for men and women who cannot afford the procedure which provides early detection of breast cancer. Both events are well attended and supported by the local fashion community.

October is breast cancer awareness month. Wearing pink might be fashionable but breast cancer is not fashionable by any means. And breast cancer isn’t limited to older women, it affects women (and men) of all ages. Early detection through any means is crucial and thermography as a technology is effective in early detection. Beyond Pink’s mission is not only to raise awareness and educate women, but also to provide funding for thermography, which is a screening process that is not often covered by health insurance companies. October is also the month when Halloween is observed. However, nothing is scarier than being diagnosed with breast cancer. So there’s no time to waste. If you’re female, the chances of having breast cancer, according to statistics is 1 in 8. That’s a very high percentage! Take the time to read about thermography by visiting www.beyondpink.net/thermography

ON TREND Spotted these cuties at Kendall Yards Night Market, sporting some of the most prominent emerging fall trends of Spokane.

Burgundy, in all its variations from a reddish wine to a darker oxblood, is still going strong, along with tan and army green. Slouchy sweaters in earthy tones, look both comfortable, and weather appropriate. This fall we are seeing more sweaters worn cropped to accommodate high waisted denim jeans entering the wardrobe. These “mom jeans” have gone from barely notable, to entirely prolific in a few seasons, and one can’t help but notice dozens of light denim jackets also rowing about any large crowd.

Alternately, in place of traditional seasonal colors, black and white are taking center stage in many ensembles. 90’s throwback striped shirts, and high neck crop tops are more popular than ever. Graphic print tees, and their cropped counterparts serve more as layering pieces for casual fall looks among the trendy.

Audreana Camm: Taking to the streets to research what’s dominating local trends among Spokanites, and to catch those who stand out amongst the crowd.

STAND OUTS

I caught Mish downtown hunting for thrift finds. Her pastel rainbow look sets her apart on a dreary day.

I spotted Nora at Boots Bakery downtown, her careful layering with bright, fun patterns caught my eye instantly.

Rainbow has been seen boldly canvasing this year’s fall fashion week in lieu of the neutrals dominating yester-year. Labels like Ashish and Libertine included multi colored stripes…

Vintage mixed with modern makes for an interesting and memorable look. Luckily for us, even modern high fashion is currently embracing the idea that what’s old is made new again.

Even Burberry released a rainbow plaid! Brave enough to go rainbow? A more colorful fall fashion scene might be a welcome addition to boost feelings, during the seasonal Pacific Northwest drudgery.

An injection of wild 1980s colorful patterns has been appearing all over fall runways. Even Pattern power clash will draw all eyes on those who are feeling bold this fall.
