The Guide

Dear Member,

The Member Magazine for WTTW and WFMT Renée Crown Public Media Center 5400 North Saint Louis Avenue Chicago, Illinois 60625

Imagine if you could soar, swoop, dive, and spiral through and around Chicago’s landmarks, neighborhoods, and suburbs – with a familiar voice providing engaging commentary along the way and from the comfort of your home. I’m excited to say that, this month, we bring you Chicago from the Air. This new special, filmed entirely with a drone camera and narrated by our very own Geoffrey Baer, makes this dream a reality on Friday, November 19 at 7:30 pm on all WTTW platforms. On page 4, Geoffrey and producer Eddie Griffin reveal what it was like to film our city from this thrilling vantage point. Also in November on WTTW, get ready for Thanksgiving with two holiday specials courtesy of our popular cooking programs. In A Chef’s Life, Vivian Howard serves up the best of her Southern cooking heritage and America’s Test Kitchen gathers the entire cast to recount personal holiday memories and reveal their all-time favorite recipes for the occasion. To make sure you’re covered for your own Thanksgiving meal (and creative ways to use the leftovers), look for more ideas from recipes we’ll show all month long on wttw.com. To honor the Thanksgiving season, WFMT will play music by American composers and performers throughout the month, plus Dvorak’s iconic New World Symphony. Arias and Songs will highlight the holiday season with three special episodes, With Heart and Voice will present a Thanksgiving special, and Exploring Music with Bill McGlaughlin will focus on Aaron Copland and other American masters. On wfmt.com, celebrate Thanksgiving with a playlist of American autumnal works and explore the musical heritage of Native American tribes who inhabited the Chicago area. Finally, WFMT hosts and staff will share their favorite Thanksgiving recipes and music that goes with them. In this month of Thanksgiving, we are grateful for your ongoing support of WTTW and WFMT. Sincerely,

Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

Chicago from the Air, writer and host Geoffrey Baer

On Thursday, November 19 at 7:30 pm, don’t miss Chicago from the Air, a new WTTW special and companion website. With producer-director Eddie Griffin and a team of experts piloting a drone camera, Geoffrey Baer shows you the city and its surrounding suburbs from an exciting new perspective, high in the sky! Geoffrey and Eddie explain how they accomplished it, and give you some hints of what you will see during the flight.

NOVEMBER 2020

Q: How did you come up with the concept for this new show? Geoffrey Baer: We’re always looking for new and compelling ways to explore the Chicago area – by boat, antique car, bicycle, ‘L’ train, on foot, and even through a “time machine.” Filming with a drone – high above and sweeping around the places and spaces of our great city – provides a really thrilling

perspective. An added bonus? It’s the ultimate in social distancing! Talk about finding a silver lining. Q: What’s the journey? Baer: We divided the program into three parts, each with its own title: “On and Off the Grid” explores Chicago’s iconic street grid. We follow how it developed and spread, and the many places where it is interrupted – for example, by diagonal streets that follow ancient Native American trails. “Doin’ Work” gives audiences an aerial view of Chicago’s sprawling industry and infrastructure. From the air, you can vividly see how it reshaped the entire region, and it has an awe-inspiring kind of beauty. “City in a Garden” is the final section, and where Chicago’s magnificence really takes center stage. We soar above forest preserves, parks, and the lakefront, and marvel at a diverse array of houses of worship. Q: Describe the technical process of filming with a drone. Eddie Griffin: The filming of Chicago from the Air was equal parts freeing and challenging. On one hand, we had the freedom to film from any camera angle we could imagine because we weren’t bound by normal obstacles like walls, fences, and buildings. If we needed to fly over something…we just flew over it! But it was also incredibly challenging, because there’s a high level of risk and responsibility you take on when putting a drone in the air. Drones may look like toys, but they’re actually small aircraft.

“I was particularly interested in how the view from the sky helps us understand our familiar surroundings in new ways, and lets us examine things in detail that we can’t see from the ground.” GEOFFREY BAER

We needed to assure everyone on the ground that we weren’t going to cause any damages or injuries. We also had to keep a close eye on the weather forecast, of course, because a sudden gust of wind can send the drone dangerously off course. And if anything happens to the drone, you also lose your camera. That could sink a documentary very quickly! Q: How did you choose which stories and locations to feature? Baer: I was particularly interested in how the view from the sky helps us understand our familiar surroundings in new ways, and lets us examine things in detail that we can’t see from the ground. A couple of examples: how Chicago’s arterial streets trace section lines laid out by early American surveyors to settle the West, and “ghost” infrastructure where abandoned rail lines and roads have

shaped neighborhoods. I also wanted to fulfill a fantasy of really flying, so we dive off the edge of a 400-foot deep quarry in Thornton, and get right up close to statues perched atop buildings that can normally be seen only from far away. Griffin: We always kept in mind that there are plenty of breathtaking drone shots available on the internet. But they sometimes leave you wanting more. Our job was to keep the audience’s attention focused for the full 60 minutes of the show, and to do that, we had to make sure our shot selections were rooted in great storytelling. It can be eye candy, but it has to be engaging. Q: What do you hope audiences take away from Chicago from the Air? Baer: As with all of my shows, I love it when people say, “I’ve lived here all my life, and I never knew that!” or, “I’m a recent transplant and this helped me really get to know my adopted home.” This special might achieve that goal more than any other we have ever done, because unless you’re a bird, you truly have never seen Chicago in this way before! Griffin: I hope audiences discover the same thing we took away from making the show – that Chicago is both super interconnected and beautifully diverse. We’re not just one type of city, and we don’t have just one aesthetic. We’re an industrial city, we’re a city of nature, and we’re a city of neighborhoods. It’s so easy to forget that when you’re experiencing Chicago at ground level, but it’s obvious from the air. ■ This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

In the Spotlight

From the CSO’s Archives: The First 130 Years During the early 1970s, Sir Georg Solti recorded several Mahler symphonies and also Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis. From 1977, this recording features the CSO Chorus with soprano Lucia Popp, mezzo Yvonne Minton, tenor Mallory Walker, and bass Gwynne Howell, and a violin solo from then-concertmaster Victor Aitay. There’ll also be an evening of stellar soloists: pianist Artur Rubinstein (Rachmaninoff), violinist Jascha Heifetz (Tchaikovsky), and cellist Jacqueline du Pré (Dvorák). Two more special soloists spotlight the orchestra’s first Grammy awards: soprano Leontyne Price and pianist Sviatoslav Richter; also hear Bartok’s Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta. Finally, the week of Thanksgiving features another Solti performance from the early 1990s: Haydn’s oratorio The Creation, featuring the CSO Chorus.

Jennifer Zetlan as Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

From OperaDelaware In 2019, OperaDelaware presented a festival that included the contemporary opera Scalia/Ginsburg by Derrick Wang. The work focuses on the friendship between Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, whose politics were very different but who were brought together by their mutual love of opera and their mutual respect for the law. Wang’s text is taken from the Justices’ actual legal rulings and opinions, and the composer’s musical inspiration, he said, came from “a long line of operatic tradition” from Mozart to Puccini. As a bonus, also enjoy Trial by Jury, an 1875 musical farce that was Gilbert & Sullivan’s first major success.

Exploring Music with Bill McGlaughlin Inspired by the famous Six composers who lived and worked in Paris in the 1920s, Bill spotlights five French composers of the late 19th century: Emmanuel Chabrier, Cecile Chaminade, Ernest Chausson, Paul Dukas, and Jules Massenet. He’ll play and discuss some familiar and lesser-known works by them, including Picturesque Pieces for piano by Chabrier, Massenet’s Piano Concerto, Chausson’s Symphony in B-Flat, and stage music by Dukas. To bring the total up to six, Bill adds some piano pieces by Erik Satie, and as a bonus, some seldomheard songs by Henri Duparc.
