From the President & CEO The Guide

Dear Member,

Summer in Chicago signals the welcome return of the Grant Park Music Festival, and WFMT is excited to bring you a new season of live performances from the Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park. This year to mark Juneteenth, the federal holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in America, we will present a special concert by the Grant Park Orchestra led by Carlos Kalmar and featuring soprano Karen Slack. The program will feature Jessie Montgomery’s Five Freedom Songs, based on the historical anthology Slave Songs of the United States, and Chicago composer Margaret Bonds’s Montgomery Variations, a work dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

For LGBTQ Pride Month, WTTW brings you a Chicago Stories documentary about the life, art, and activism of a Chicagoan who wouldn’t take no for an answer – the political cartoonist and equal rights crusader Danny Sotomayor, who fought for better AIDS treatments for all while battling the disease himself. Read an interview with The Outrage of Danny Sotomayor producer-writer Dan Andries on page 4. And we’ll premiere Art and Pep, a film about the founders of the iconic Chicago gay bar Sidetrack which has served as a pillar of the city’s gay business district and for decades helped fuel community development; To Be Takei , tracing the incredible life of Star Trek actor and author George Takei, who went where no Asian American performer had gone before; and Miriam and Alan: Lost in Scotland with Hollywood actors Miriam Margolyes and Alan Cumming who take a rollicking tour of Scotland, with a side trip to America.

As spring turns to summer in Chicago, all of us at WFMT and WTTW are grateful for your continuing support.

Sincerely,

The Member Magazine for WTTW and WFMT

CHICAGO STORIES:

The Outrage of Danny Sotomayor

Chicago Stories: The Outrage of Danny Sotomayor, airing on Friday, June 28 at 9:00 pm and streaming on the PBS app, tells the story of a Chicagoan who wouldn’t take no for an answer. Sotomayor was a tireless crusader for equal rights who skillfully used civil disobedience to fight for AIDS treatment for his community while battling the disease himself. The film’s producer-writer

Dan Andries tells us more about Sotomayor’s life and work.

The Guide: Danny Sotomayor might not be a household name, but he made a big impact. Why did you choose to tell the story of Chicago AIDS activism through one individual?

Dan Andries: The first time I learned Danny’s story and saw video of him in action, I was entirely captivated. The more we learned about him, the more we thought the story was so powerful, and encapsulated so much of what was happening at the time here in Chicago, that it had to be a documentary. I’m always hoping to find a way to center a story around one person the audience can really come to

know, and when their story sits so powerfully in the center of a larger story, it really is a great gift.

The Guide: How did the AIDS crisis impact Chicago’s LGBTQ community?

Andries: It was devastating, just as it was everywhere. And its lifeand-death stakes pushed the LGBTQ community to become more visible. A lot of the organizing around the AIDS crisis led to an increase in people effectively advocating for their rights, and for support, and to the creation of institutions that are still going strong. AIDS changed everything.

The Guide: Sotomayor himself was diagnosed with and died of complications from AIDS. How do his friends and fellow activists in the documentary remember him?

Andries: Danny died much too young, at 33, and he was beloved. He is remembered as a wonderful spirit, a good friend, and a forceful advocate. Danny didn’t shy away from confrontation, and some of his closest friends knew that meant that he could be a thorn in the side of anyone –anyone! – who he deemed too complacent. But people appreciated and still continue to respect his commitment.

The Guide: Sotomayor was also a cartoonist. How did he use his art as a form of activism?

Andries: His cartoons, mostly single panels, were unrestrained attacks on complacency, homophobia, political inaction, and the overall indifference that many had for those who suffered from and died of AIDS. And his cartoons could be wickedly

funny. His bravery was often at odds with the agenda of his publishers, but he never backed away from telling it as he saw it.

The Guide: Much of the documentary shows footage of some of the larger protests that ACT UP and other groups staged. What impact did these demonstrations have on the AIDS crisis in Chicago?

Andries: ACT UP Chicago’s demonstration in April 1990 led to Cook County Hospital quickly opening its AIDS ward to women for the first time. Other demonstrations had the effect of keeping the issues visible, whether they were inflated insurance rates for LGBTQ people, underfunding of healthcare for people with AIDS, or harmful messaging around the disease that left people more confused than enlightened. ACT UP Chicago saw all attention as a victory, and every action, each demonstration, had a specific target with a clear outcome they were after.

The Guide: How is the story of Danny Sotomayor a uniquely Chicago story?

Andries: Danny grew up in Humboldt Park, having been born into a Puerto Rican/ Mexican Catholic family who didn’t have a lot of money, in a household that was destabilized by domestic violence. Chicago in the 1970s offered a kid like Danny places where he could

I hope people are reminded that raising their voice, standing up to and challenging power…is one of the great rights we have in this country.

find a community free of casual racism, support for his art, and a neighborhood where it was good to be gay. The city’s long legacy of street activism, which stretches back into the 19th century, meant that he could find people here with whom he could connect, and develop his deep talent for organizing and inspiring others. I think all of that makes this a uniquely Chicago story.

The Guide: What do you hope viewers will take away from this documentary?

Andries: I hope people are reminded that raising their voice, standing up to and challenging power, and believing they can make the world a more just place is one of the great rights

we have in this country. And that to do what Danny did is as legitimate a way of participating in our democracy as voting. I also hope that Danny’s story, and the stories of his friends, acts as an inoculation against hate in any form. The reality of how hard it can be sometimes simply to be alive challenges all of us to be compassionate with each other.

Explore the companion website for this program at wttw.com/ chicagostories. You’ll find a look at the Youth Empowerment Performance Project inspired by Sotomayor’s activism, archival images and Sotomayor’s provocative political cartoons, and a video extra about AIDS Garden Chicago and Belmont Rocks in the Lincoln Park neighborhood.

Chicago Stories: The Outrage of Danny Sotomayor Friday, June 28 at 9:00 pm and streaming on the PBS app

Immediately preceding Chicago Stories: The Outrage of Danny Sotomayor, on Friday, June 28 at 8:00 pm and streaming on the PBS app, WTTW will premiere Art and Pep, a moving profile of Art Johnston and José Pepe Peña, two civil rights leaders who in 1982 founded Chicago’s iconic gay bar Sidetrack, a pillar of the city’s gay business district that for decades helped fuel movements and create community in Chicago. They share their 40-year love story and recall the struggle for fair treatment and the fight to love freely. It is a tale of activism born in the heartland that has inspired others to follow in their footsteps.

Remembering

Sir Andrew Davis

On April 20, Sir Andrew Davis, who served as music director of the Lyric Opera of Chicago and orchestras on three continents, died from leukemia at the age of 80. Made a CBE and a Knight Bachelor for his outstanding services to British classical music, Davis conducted world premieres by some of the world’s greatest composers including the premiere of Elgar’s posthumously completed third symphony. He led Lyric Opera’s production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle in 2005, and was poised to do it again in 2020, at age 76, before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the production to be cancelled. Last December, he conducted the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in his own re-orchestration of Handel’s Messiah, which was the final performance he gave. On June 6, New York Philharmonic This Week shares an archival performance featuring Maestro Davis, and on June 8, WFMT will rebroadcast an episode of Listening to Singers with Ed Frazier Davis who shared favorite recordings of his father.

In the Spotlight

Folkstage

Blending Americana, blues, and soul, Kevin So has written songs covered by luminaries like India Arie, Ana Popovic, Shemekia Copeland, and Keb’ Mo’. He played keyboards, guitar, mandolin, and sang harmonies in the Keb’ Mo’ Band for 15 years. Live on Folkstage, So previews his new cross-cultural musical endeavor: a multi-lingual exploration of the classic songs of Teresa Teng, the “Eternal Queen of Asian Pop.” In addition to the challenge of singing in Mandarin, So says he “will also be faced with reinterpreting these ‘pop’ songs in a different way musically and stylistically, as the goal is to maintain the integrity of their traditional melodies, many of which come from Chinese folk songs … I believe this is a very special project, as Teresa Teng’s songs are known all over the world.”

In the Spotlight

From Les Arts Florissants

The WFMT Opera Series presents an acclaimed production by the pioneering period instrument ensemble Les Arts Florissants which continues to garner praise as it tours this summer to Toronto, Tanglewood, Caramoor, and London. Inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Fairy Queen still delights audiences more than 300 years after its creation. First performed in London in 1692, just three years before Purcell’s untimely death at the age of 35, this “masque” (or semi-opera) is the work of a young prodigy. This performance from the Utrecht Earl Music Festival features the latest laureates of Le Jardin des Voix, Les Arts Florissants’ academy for young singers. The eight soloists, selected from all over the world, take turns embodying all the characters in this joyous fable that celebrates youth, love, and nature. Saturday, June 29 12:00 pm
