A portrait of musician, educator, and activist Zitkála-Šá, featured in Unladylike2020: The Changemakers
Celebrating the Unsung Women Who Changed America a Century Ago An interview with filmmaker Charlotte Mangin by DANIEL HAUTZINGER 4
JULY 2020
AS WE CELEBRATE women trailblazers throughout the summer in honor of the 19th Amendment centennial with multi-platform content commemorating U.S. women’s suffrage, the feminist movement, and modern-day changemakers, American Masters has spotlighted five little-known women politicians and activists from the turn of the twentieth century in Unladylike2020: The Changemakers which airs and streams on July 10. We spoke to Charlotte Mangin, the director, producer, and writer of Unladylike2020, about the project. Q: Unladylike2020 is a huge project celebrating unsung women who changed America—can you describe how you came up with the idea behind it? MANGIN: I was visiting the Intrepid Museum in New York, and there was a children’s book author reading her new story about Elinor Smith, who I learned was the youngest licensed pilot in the world at age 16. And I was just in complete awe of this story—super inspired, but also really frustrated: ‘Why have I never heard of Elinor Smith?’ So I started to research Elinor Smith, and that led me to other women in aviation, one of whom became the first woman
we featured in Unladylike2020, Bessie Coleman, the first African American female aviator. That research led me to women in other professions. Then it just grew and grew into this treasure trove of stories.
only a historian or biographer, but also a woman from today who is in the same field—why did you decide to include these contemporary voices?
Q: Why did you decide to focus on women from around the turn of the twentieth century? MANGIN: It’s an era in U.S. society when women in the workforce almost double, during what historians call the Progressive Era, the 1890s to the 1920s. It’s against the backdrop of the suffrage movement and all of these other movements for civil rights. Women are really having a public voice en masse for the first time in America, so that’s part of why there are so many women who broke barriers and were the first in their profession. Q: What was it like to recover the stories of “unsung” women, especially those for whom there is little evidence remaining? MANGIN: One of the criteria had to be if there was enough archival imagery available, since a documentary is a visual medium. For some, biographies have been written; for others, not yet, so the information had to be pulled from encyclopedia entries, books that were out of print, and academic journals.
Q: How did you come up with the title?
Charlotte Mangin
MANGIN: We wanted to interview a woman in the same profession who is essentially walking in the footsteps of this woman from the past as a way to bring the past into the present day, and take stock of how far we’ve come and what remains to be done in these professions to reach gender parity. And we also wanted to introduce a modern-day role model. Q: What was it like to immerse yourself in these women’s lives a century later?
For example, Jovita Idár, who was a Latina journalist and civil rights leader who grew up in Texas at a time when there were what are known by historians as “Juan Crow” or “Jaime Crow” laws in place against the Mexican-American community. Many of the scholars we worked with had never heard of her. We were only able to find four or five portraits of her.
MANGIN: It was so inspiring. When I was having a bad day, I would think of Annie Smith Peck climbing one of the highest peaks in the Western Hemisphere in petticoats with boots that had nails hammered in through them because they hadn’t invented crampons yet, and I would think, I can do this. If she could do that, I can do anything.
That’s where an aspect of what makes this project unique visually comes in: because the archive was so limited, I brought on an artist who is creating this gorgeous and very colorful artwork that brings the black and white imagery to life and also fills in the visual gaps through stop-motion animation.
Q: Are there any stories that especially stand out to you?
Q: For each woman, you interview not
went through at the time, to essentially be Americanized into the Anglo-Saxon ways of life. The children were beaten if they spoke their native language, they were forced to assimilate in their clothing, learn English, become Christian. She ended up becoming a very outspoken critic of U.S. policy toward American Indians. She was a very gifted musician who performed at the White House. She went on to write what’s known as the first Native American opera. But what really strikes me is how she took the trauma of this experience, of her education, and really turned it into having a voice in such a powerful way.
MANGIN: I feel such kinship to every single one of them, but I would say Zitkála-Šá, otherwise known as Gertrude Simmons Bonnin. She was a Native American who was taken from her reservation as part of this boarding school experience that tens of thousands of American Indian children
MANGIN: It came directly out of my research into one of the women we feature: Margaret Chung, the first American-born Chinese-American doctor. I came across a quotation by her that went, “I used to be ladylike and deferential, but found it didn’t pay…Now I treat them rough. They lap it up.” It just calls attention to these norms of what being a “lady” meant, especially at the time. The ladies were supposed to be at home taking care of their husbands and their children. In fact, in many states, there were laws that women who were married could not work. Women had just gotten the right to get divorced, have custody of their children, to keep their wages if they were working women. We came across articles of a woman being arrested for wearing pants while riding a bicycle in New York City. So when you think of how deep-set the limitations were on what a woman was expected to do in U.S. society and contrast that to how “unladylike” or bold these women were, and what they were able to accomplish in the face of those unimaginable odds, that’s where the title came from. ■ This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

The distinguished pianist Andras Schiff is also a conductor who has led orchestras in the U.K. and the U.S. When he visited the CSO, he directed music by Haydn, Bach, Beethoven, and Bartok.
Debussy’s The Martyrdom of St. Sebastian originated in Paris in 1911 as a play with music and dance. As condensed into an extended orchestral suite, it was performed by the Philharmonic under Kurt Masur.
In addition to her legendary teaching career, Nadia Boulanger also conducted major international orchestras. Her students included Aaron Copland, Daniel Barenboim, and Astor Piazzolla.

Carlos Kalmar
Best of the Grant Park Music Festival Anticipating Independence Day, Grant Park principal conductor Carlos Kalmar has selected four pieces of American music for the first of July’s programs: Tournaments Overture by John Corigliano, a saxophone concerto by Roberto Sierra with James Carter as soloist, David Diamon’s evocative Rounds for String Orchestra, and the Second Symphony by Randall Thompson. Another program will include more American works: Howard Hanson’s Elegy and the Poem for Flute and Orchestra by Charles Tomlinson Griffes, with soloist Adam Walker also playing Carl Nielsen’s Flute Concerto, ending with Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony. George Antheil’s Jazz Symphony was written in 1925 for the Paul Whiteman Band – which had earlier premiered Rhapsody in Blue – but the Antheil piece was thought to be too advanced. The composer revised it in 1955, and it appeared on a Kalmar program at Pritzker Pavilion in 2015, along with Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with James Ehnes.

From Lyric Opera of Chicago: Wagner’s Die Walkuere A highlight of Lyric Opera of Chicago’s 2017-18 season was its new David Pountney productions of Die Walkuere, the second installment of Wagner’s monumental Ring cycle. Bass-baritone Eric Owens reprised his role as Wotan from the previous season’s Das Rheingold, the king of the Norse gods joined by soprano Christine Goerke in the title role of Bruennhilde, his favorite daughter, leader of the warrior-maiden Valkyries who bring heroes to defend the home of the gods, Valhalla. Tenor Brandon Jovanovich and soprano Elisabet Strid portray Siegmund and Sieglinde, and Sieglinde’s husband, Hunding, Siegmund’s enemy, is sung by bass Ain Anger. Ailyn Perez
From Lyric Opera of Chicago: Charles Gounod’s Faust Lyric’s 2017-18 production of Faust featured the American debut of French tenor Benjamin Bernheim, who was widely lauded for his portrayal of the aged philosopher (in this production, though, a sculptor) who sells his soul to the devil in return for renewed youth. This devil, named Mephistopheles, was portrayed by Christian Van Horn. Mephistopheles shows Faust a vision of the innocent young Marguerite, with whom Faust immediately falls in love; Lyric’s Marguerite is soprano Ailyn Perez. They meet; they become lovers; Faust abandons her. Has Mephistopheles triumphed? Imprisoned for having killed her illegitimate child, Marguerite rejects Mephistopheles in a powerful final trio that is one of the many dramatic climaxes of the opera, like the brilliant Jewel Song and the rousing Soldiers’ Chorus.

In the Spotlight Maestro Riccardo Muti
From the Chicago Symphony: Modern American, Viennese Classic American composer William Schuman’s Symphony No. 9, subtitled Le Fosse Ardeatine, or The Ardeatine Caves, commemorates a Nazi atrocity of 1944, in which hundreds of Italians were murdered in caves outside Rome. At one of last year’s CSO subscription concerts, music director Riccardo Muti paired the work with Mozart’s final masterpiece, the Requiem in D Minor. The program reveals Muti’s commitment to sending messages of peace and reconciliation through music. For the Mozart, the CSO Chorus and vocal soloists Benedetta Torre, Sara Mingardo, Siamir Pirgu, and Mika Kares are featured along with the orchestra.

From Lyric Opera of Chicago: Gluck’s Orphee Opening night of Lyric Opera’s 201718 season marked the first full-scale collaboration between the company and its new resident dance ensemble, the Joffrey Ballet. Christoph Willibald Gluck’s most famous opera, whose English title is Orpheus and Eurydice, exists in a couple of different versions; the version he constructed for performance in Paris has extensive ballet elements. At Lyric, the setting for the ancient mythological tale was updated to a modern dance studio, outside of which Eurydice is killed in a car accident. Her griefstricken husband is encouraged by the character Amour (Love) to seek her in the underworld, and it is in the Hades and Elysian Fields scenes that the Joffrey dancers come to the fore. The Russian tenor Dmitry Korchak portrays Orphee, and Andriana Chuchman, a Ryan Opera Center alumna, both sings and dances Eurydice. Concurrently with the program, check out some of the dance scenes on our website.

Conrad Tao
Best of the Grant Park Music Festival From summer 2019, hear Fiesta by Jimmy Lopez and Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with youthful pianist Conrad Tao as the soloist (from summer 2019). From 2014 comes a performance featuring members of Lyric’s Ryan Opera Center, in Cabaret Songs by William Bolcom, that year’s Grant Park composer-in-residence. And there’s a novelty by Andrew Norman: Drip, Blip, Sparkle, Spin, Glint, Glide, Glow, Float, Flop, Chop, Pop, Shatter, Splash. Our final July offering from Grant Park begins with Danzas Fantasticas by Joaquin Turina and continues with guitarist Pablo Sainz Villegas (from 2017) playing Joaquin Rodrigo’s Fantasia para un Gentilhombre, a concerto written for the legendary Andres Segovia. Finally, we’ll hear the Bachianas Brasileiras No. 7 by Brazil’s Heitor Villa-Lobos, composed in 1942 and featuring, like the other works in the composer’s sequence of Bach tributes, movement titles that Bach himself often used: Prelude, Gigue, Toccata, and Fugue.

Rich Warren
The Midnight Special: Farewell to Rich Warren Rich became a co-host of WFMT’s Midnight Special folk and comedy show in 1983, taking over as sole host in 1996. Since then, he has not missed a single Saturday evening, having presented a wide array of singer-songwriters, classic folk artists, some pop, many novelties, and plenty of comic sketches, in the tradition of Mike Nichols, Ray Nordstrand, and Norm Pellegrini. Beginning August 1, folk-music maven and radio host Marilyn Rea Beyer will take over from Rich; however, Rich will continue to host Folkstage at 8:00 pm. Rich hasn’t fully decided what he’ll play on his last show, but it will be “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue,” drawing on a legacy of experience that extends back to 1968, when his University of Illinois show called Changes was conceived as a tribute to The Midnight Special.

From Lyric Opera of Chicago: Bellini’s I Puritani During the short lifetime (1801-1835) of Vincenzo Bellini, his operas almost always engendered good public and critical reaction, and his music was much admired even by such rivals as Gaetano Donizetti. His final success was I Puritani, which Lyric Opera of Chicago presented as part of its 2017-18 season. Set in 17th-century England during the country’s civil war between Puritans and Royalists, the opera stars soprano Albina Shagimuratova as Elvira, from a Puritan family, and tenor Lawrence Brownlee as her lover, Arturo, from the Royalist side (also known as Cavaliers). The opera contains a spectacular mad scene for the soprano, but that is not followed by tragedy; the plot has a happy ending. Enrique Mazzola, Lyric’s recently named music director, conducts.
