Air Check Dear Member, One of the true benefits of public media is the opportunity to learn about true stories that need to be heard, in more depth than you might find anywhere else. This is certainly true of a new documentary in our schedule this month: 1916 – The Irish Rebellion. This new three-part series from the University of Notre Dame, narrated by Irish actor Liam Neeson, recalls the Easter Rising in Dublin that took place a hundred years ago this spring, when a small and ill-equipped group of rebels bravely took on the British Empire to fight for an independent Ireland, an ultimately successful quest that inspired many other freedom fighters who came after them. I hope you can join us during this month of St. Patrick’s Day for this rousing story that is in some ways reminiscent of the American colonists’ struggle to form a new nation back in 1776. Also in March on WTTW11 and wttw.com, we bid a final farewell to the beloved series Downton Abbey after six unforgettable seasons. PBS NewsHour anchors Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff provide analysis of the election results from the Super Tuesday primary contests. Geoffrey Baer introduces us to this year’s winner of the Richard H. Driehaus Prize at the University of Notre Dame – Florida architect Scott Merrill. You’ll find a new website to explore the life and works of this architect at wttw.com/merrill. Check, Please! executive producer David Manilow serves up new appetizing interviews on WTTW’s digital series Chat, Please! We check in with astronaut Scott Kelly, just returned from A Year in Space, learn about some trailblazing Space Men on American Experience, and NOVA revisits the story of Neil Armstrong, The First Man on the Moon. We commence a year-long monthly celebration of the local filmmakers at Kartemquin Films as the production company celebrates its 50th anniversary. And two popular Masterpiece series return for new seasons: Grantchester, centering around the mystery-solving young vicar Sidney Chambers; and Mr. Selfridge, starring Jeremy Piven as the flamboyant American department store magnate Harry Selfridge. On 98.7WFMT and wfmt.com, our live Saturday-afternoon Metropolitan Opera broadcasts are continuing; the first March Saturday brings us the Met’s highly-anticipated new production of Puccini’s Manon Lescaut with Kristine Opolais and Roberto Alagna. Impromptu visitors in March include earlymusic maven Jordi Savall, an Astor Piazzolla celebration, and a Montreal Symphony preview with members of that visiting orchestra and pianist Daniil Trifonov. And be sure to join us on the last Sunday in March for our annual broadcast of Lyric Opera’s Rising Stars concert. There is plenty to enjoy on wfmt.com, too, including Carl Grapentine’s Morning Quiz, Lisa Flynn’s New Releases, some exciting travel opportunities with WFMT hosts, and daily news and features stories about the world of classical music in Chicago and beyond. Spring is almost here, and we’re glad you’re spending it with us. Thank you for your continuing support. Sincerely,
Dan Schmidt President & CEO

EVENING 6:00 PBS NewsHour 7:00 Chicago Tonight 7:30 Chicago by Boat: The New River Tour Geoffrey Baer returns to the Chicago River for a tour highlighting the changes along the river since Chicago by Boat, his first “tour” from 1995. This update reminds us how the river’s role as a shipping channel and wastewater channel site shaped the growth of Chicago, shows off the architectural wonders along its banks, and features successful efforts to make the river an attractive recreational destination. Dramatically expanding the geographical scope of the original tour, Geoffrey tells the stories of the Illinois & Michigan Canal, cruise the Sanitary and Ship Canal and the North Shore Channel, and follow the river to its northernmost source; a sewer pipe near Waukegan! The vessel for Geoffrey’s video voyage is the oldest power boat moored in Chicago, the Robert Allen II, built in 1936 at a boatyard on the North Branch of the Chicago River. 10:00 Chicago’s Lakefront [R]

Extraordinary Women: Dr. Ruth Westheimer Dr. Ruth Westheimer, the world’s most famous sex therapist, has led many lives. Born to a German Jewish family in 1928, Ruth’s happy childhood was shattered when Adolf Hitler came to power and Jews were reduced to subhuman status. Her parents then made the ultimate sacrifice, sending their daughter to safety on the Kindertransport to Switzerland. They would die in the Holocaust. The fate of her parents and her pride in her Jewish roots led the orphaned Ruth to become an ardent Zionist, travelling to Palestine after the end of World War II, where she was trained as a sniper by the Jewish underground. But then two marriages led her to the other side of the globe and some of the world’s finest universities. In New York she became a single, working mother, before meeting her soulmate, Manfred Westheimer, by whom she had another child. 10:00 Independent Lens: An Honest Liar Meet James “The Amazing” Randi, the famed magician and self-proclaimed “honest liar” who dedicated his life to exposing frauds. WNYC’s Sara Fishko produces short documentaries on various musical topics. We have her during March looking at the unusual 5/4 time signature, at Bach’s famous Chaconne, and at the inner workings of an orchestra.
Eric Owens sings the pivotal role of Wotan in Lyric Opera’s upcoming Ring cycle. Enjoy a preview when he joins conductor Alan Gilbert, soprano Heidi Melton, and the New York Philharmonic for the final scene of Die Walküre.

Edo de Waart
Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra – On Stage Alisa Weilerstein plays Elgar’s Cello Concerto on the leadoff concert in a new radio series of the Milwaukee Symphony. Under the leadership of its sixth music director, Edo de Waart, the MSO plays some 140 concerts annually throughout the state of Wisconsin. Selected performances are featured in the broadcasts, which include behind-the-scenes commentary from the musicians. Founded in 1959, the MSO has given the world and US premieres of major works by John Adams, Philip Glass, Matthias Pintscher, and Roberto Sierra. Contemporary works included in the March broadcast sequence are River sings a song to trees by Jennifer Higdon and Marc Neikrug’s Bassoon Concerto, an MSO co-commission. In Milwaukee, the orchestra presents an Arts in Community Education program, a comprehensive education initiative that has become a model for community outreach by other American orchestras. The MSO also has pre- and post-concert audience talks and special programs for youth and teens. De Waart, Carlos Kalmar, and Robert Spano are among the conductors for the March broadcasts. Soloists, besides Weilerstein, include soprano Jessica Rivera and mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung.

Live from the Met: Manon Lescaut Transformed Originally set in pre-Revolutionary 18th-century France, Puccini’s Manon Lescaut has been re-set in the occupied Paris of World War II in a kind of film noir atmosphere by Richard Eyre for the new production at the Metropolitan Opera. The highly-anticipated staging features Kristine Opolais in the title role of the courtesan Manon, and Roberto Alagna as her lover, the Count Des Grieux. Met principal conductor Fabio Luisi leads the performance. Their tragic love was described by Puccini himself as a story of “desperate passion.” It was the composer’s first major success when it premiered in the Italian city of Turin in 1893.

All prerecorded music on 98.7WFMT is provided by the Richard and Mary L. Gray Music Library.

Nicholas Kraemer
Chicago Symphony Orchestra Radio Broadcasts: The Brandenburgs Nicholas Kraemer is principal guest conductor of Norway’s Kristiansand Symphony and of Chicago’s Music of the Baroque. In 2014 he returned to the Chicago Symphony as both guest conductor and harpsichordist in a complete cycle of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos. Often singled out as Bach’s pinnacle orchestral achievement, the Brandenburgs are scored for a wide variety of soloists and supporting ensembles. The soloists with Kraemer include first-chair principals of the CSO, among them trumpeter Christopher Martin, oboist Eugene Isotov, and concertmaster Robert Chen. The cycle gets its name from its dedication to an 18th-century German nobleman, the Margrave of Brandenburg – who most likely never heard them played. The CSO has presented them as a complete set twice before, in 2002 and 2006.

Jerome Moross
A Unique Stage Work: The Golden Apple, Moross-Latouche In 1954, when it premiered offBroadway and quickly moved to Broadway, The Golden Apple, with libretto by John Latouche and music by Jerome Moross, was immediately hailed as a new kind of musical theater, singled out as the most innovative Broadway show since Oklahoma some ten years earlier. It is structured almost like an opera, and Peter Van De Graaff will feature it during his March presentations on The Tuesday Night Opera. In spite of critical praise, the show was not a box-office success, and its first complete recording was released just last year. It’s an updating of stories and characters from Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey. We meet Ulysses and his wife Penelope; Helen, the prettiest girl in the town of Angel’s Roost at the foot of Mt. Olympus in the State of Washington; Paris, a travelling salesman; Mayor and Mrs Juniper; Miss Minerva; and a host of others.

Members of eighth blackbird
eighth blackbird on Relevant Tones Hand Eye at the Museum of Contemporary Art in January connected the six members of eighth blackbird, the museum’s ensemblein-residence, with Sleeping Giant, a Brooklyn-based collective of six young American composers. These composers embrace diverse musical approaches, and at the MCA, they tailored new works to highlight the six individual eighth blackbird performers. Seth Boustead witnessed this innovative project that connected two dynamic groups, and features it during this month’s run of Relevant Tones.

Live from the Met: The Marriage of Figaro Richard Eyre devised a new production of Mozart’s classic comedy The Marriage of Figaro for the Metropolitan Opera in 2014; it was highly acclaimed and has returned to the company’s lineup this season. The setting remains the Spanish city of Seville, where Mozart and his librettist, Lorenzo da Ponte, originally placed it, but the time has been moved up from the 18th century to the 1930s. In the cast will be Amanda Majeski as the countess, Isabel Leonard as Cherubino, Luca Pisaroni as Count Almaviva, and Russian bass Mikhail Petrenko in the title role. His sweetheart Susanna will be portrayed by the Rumanian-born soprano Anita Hartig. Fabio Luisi conducts.
