Air Check Dear Member, WTTW and WFMT have always synonymous with exceptional local content, and this month, we are proud to bring you an especially impressive array of options – everything from three new installments of our own homegrown national music series Soundstage to an acclaimed play from Albany Park Theater Project and Goodman Theatre; thought-provoking documentaries about the city’s Cabrini Green housing project and a secret WWII training exercise on Lake Michigan; an innovative film created by a 12-year-old local filmmaker; and a new local series, The Interview Show with Mark Bazer (wttw.com/interviewshow). This month on WTTW11 and wttw.com, there is something for everyone, including American Masters profiles of Janis Joplin and the Highwaymen; a new season of Genealogy Roadshow; That Bites!, a 12-year-old’s treatise on what it’s like to live with food allergies; a revealing series, Genius, hosted by renowned physicist (and genius) Stephen Hawking; all-new webisodes of Chat, Please! with David Manilow; the return of and final season with Kenneth Branagh as the brooding Swedish detective Wallander and the continuation of our popular Saturday night mysteries; and two important Independent Lens specials with town halls on gun violence in America. We close out the month with a new local documentary, Heroes on Deck: World War II on Lake Michigan, about fighter pilots training on carriers near Chicago and the efforts being made to raise and restore their aircraft; and two annual mainstays: the National Memorial Day Concert and this year’s National Geographic Bee, both from Washington, DC. Remember that you can catch these on WTTW11, at wttw.com/video, and via the PBS video app. On 98.7WFMT and wfmt.com, we herald Lyric Opera of Chicago with a month-opening broadcast of the company’s latest foray into the world of Rodgers & Hammerstein, The King and I. Then we’ll be starting our Saturday rebroadcasts of productions from the 2015-16 season; during May, enjoy The Marriage of Figaro, the new Bel Canto, and La Cenerentola. Stellar pianist Jeremy Denk performs live for WFMT from the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival an eclectic recital ranging from Beethoven to ragtime. We’ll welcome the Spektral Quartet and Civitas to Live from WFMT, and also present live Impromptus with the chamber musicians of Midsummer’s Music Festival and with pianist Marc-André Hamelin. At wfmt.com, you can also find the latest classical music and fine arts news stories, such as the announcement of this year’s Richard Tucker Award winner and our annual celebration of Major League Baseball’s Opening Day, plus a variety of interviews with visiting singers, conductors, and instrumentalists, illuminating lists, quizzes and contests, and more. Listen anywhere and anytime. On behalf of WTTW and WFMT, thank you for choosing us, and for your continuing support. We couldn’t do it without you. Sincerely,

Dan Schmidt President & CEO

70 Acres in Chicago: Cabrini Green For 70 years, there stood a Chicago public housing community known as Cabrini Green, which once towered over Chicago’s most valuable neighborhoods. Cabrini’s high-rises were demolished, and an AfricanAmerican community cleared to make room for another social experiment: mixed-income neighborhoods. Shot over the course of 20 years, the film documents this upheaval, from the razing of the first buildings in 1995 to the clashes in the mixed-income neighborhoods a decade later.

Metropolitan Opera Finale: Mozart’s Abduction

Aebersold and Neiweem Return to Live from WFMT

The Eastern Orthodox Christian churches often celebrate Easter on a later date than the Western churches do. Peter DuBois draws on the incredibly rich tradition of Orthodox choral music for a special Eastern-Easter edition of With Heart and Voice.

Met music director James Levine claims Mozart’s comedy The Abduction from the Seraglio as one of his favorite operas. He conducts it to conclude the 2015-16 Live from the Met radio season.

You know Debussy’s La Mer as an evocative piece of orchestral tone-painting. Hear it anew in the composer’s own setting for piano duet, played live from Levin Studio by Claire Aebersold and Ralph Neiweem.

Paolo Montalban and Kate Baldwin

Lyric Presents The King and I Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic tale of an English schoolteacher and a Siamese king comes to Lyric Opera as the grand finale to the 2015-16 season. Kate Baldwin stars as Anna, the teacher who comes to an exotic Asian palace to teach the royal children and becomes involved with the life of the entire court, and Paolo Montalban portrays the conflicted king, loyal to tradition but longing to modernize his family and his country. The relationship between the two is portrayed with both sensitivity and honesty. The show’s memorable songs include Shall We Dance, Something Wonderful, We Kiss in A Shadow, and Hello Young Lovers. Join WFMT for a broadcast of this Broadway smash.

Peter Van De Graaff’s Hidden Gems “As someone,” says WFMT host Peter Van De Graaff, “who is always interested in answering the question ‘What else is out there?’ – I have long been attracted to the undiscovered. During May I’ll share with WFMT listeners what I consider to be some of the best and most interesting of my discoveries. Enjoy!” On weekday mornings in May, Carl Grapentine will welcome Peter to introduce little-known but fascinating pieces, beginning with Charles Alkan’s Studies in the Minor Keys for solo piano (May 2) and ending with Norwegian composer Johan Svendsen’s Symphony #2 (May 31). In between, Peter will offer a suite from Rameau’s comic ballet Platée (May 9); a symphony by Muzio Clementi, better known for keyboard music (May 13); and a quintet for piano and strings by Reynaldo Hahn, better known for songs (May 25). Join Peter to hear what he so aptly calls “hidden gems.”

Jeremy Denk

Jeremy Denk Live from the Gilmore Festival In addition to being an award-winning pianist – MacArthur Fellow, 2014 Avery Fisher Prize, 2014 Musical America Instrumentalist of the Year – Jeremy Denk is a composer, a writer on music and, since last year, an artistic partner of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. His recordings of works by Bach, Beethoven, and Ives have won widespread recognition too. He’s an upcoming guest at the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival, and will perform live from Gilmore over WFMT and wfmt.com. His recital program, also being presented at Carnegie Hall, could be taken as a kind of definition of the word eclectic: a Bach suite, a Beethoven sonata, and fantasies by Haydn and Schubert make up its standard-repertory elements. He’ll also perform music by William Byrd originally written for the Renaissance keyboard instrument called a virginal, two canons by Conlon Nancarrow, a Wagner arrangement by Donald Lambert, and a whole group of ragtime pieces by Joplin, Bolcom, Hindemith, Stravinsky, and Ives.
