DCON 2020

Recapped

We recently held the 57th annual Wisconsin Upper Michigan CKI District Convention (DCON) in Madison, WI on February 28 - March 1, 2020. This was a weekend full of service, leadership, and fellowship where clubs were able to meet members from other clubs throughout our District. We started the weekend with activities and service projects to get to know members from other clubs and serve our community. At DCON, members attended workshops to develop their leadership skills and learn more about the Kiwanis Family. Members met Kiwanians and other members of the K-Fam at the Kiwanis Family Luncheon. Attendees also had the opportunity to run for District Board for the 2020-2021 year, and members from across the District were elected to serve on the District Board. On Saturday night, we thanked our past District Board and Club Presidents at the Presidents and Parents Banquet. On Sunday, the new District Board was installed, and we celebrated another successful year of Wisconsin Upper Michigan CKI District. -Joanna Carman

DCON 2020

A Word from the DCON Chair

Hello, everyone! Thank you SO much to all of you who were able to attend the 2020 WUM CKI District Convention back in February. It was an incredible weekend filled with some amazing memories, and I hope that you enjoyed it just as much as I did. With an attendance of 141 guests, it was our largest convention since 2015! If I had to choose my favorite part of the District Convention weekend, it would certainly be meeting all of you. Having members come together from across Wisconsin and Upper Michigan with a common love for service makes for a great time; I could not ask for a better weekend. Having the chance to interact with each other and share ideas is one of the best parts of our organization, and this all happens at DCON! I may be biased as the DCON chair, but this is hands down my favorite event of the CKI year. It was an absolute honor to be able to plan DCON 2020 alongside of a spectacular committee. I would like to thank Maddy Dimeo, Kevin Jacobson, Joseph Rinaldi, Lauren Pondikati, Maggie Ollmann, Dayna Porter, Bilguun Altangerel, Alexandria Prostko, Reid Parks, and the 2019-2020 District Board for putting in the effort that allowed for such a successful convention. Without all of these individuals, there is no way that DCON would have been as spectacular as it was. I now have the pleasure of serving as the 2020-2021 Wisconsin Upper Michigan CKI District Governor, and I am thrilled to be a leader in this organization once again. I hope that you will all join us for the next District Convention, taking place February 26-28, 2020 in Green Bay, Wisconsin! -Katelyn Van Buren 2019-2020 WUM CKI District Convention Chair

A Place for YOU on the District Board... The District Board is a great way to gain leadership experience, become more involved in CKI, and make life-long friends. Lucky for you, there are ways that YOU can still join the District Board in leading WUM CKI.

Open Board Positions: Bulletin Editor & Asst Special Events Chair There are currently just TWO open positions left on the 2020-2021 WUM CKI District Board, and one of them could be filled by YOU! We are in need of a District Bulletin Editor and an Assistant Special Events Chair. Each of these roles is unique and an important part of our team. To learn more about these positions and to apply, reach out to Governor Katelyn Van Buren (wumcki.governor@gmail) or look on our website at wumcirclek.weebly.com

Join a Committee! If you are looking to get a bit more involved in CKI, joining a District Committee may be the perfect move for you! Help out a District Chair by joining their committee and being a leader in the organization. This is your chance to get involved at the District Level as a leader without a high level of commitment. CKI during COVID-19 The world is in a weird place right now. We don't know what will happen in the future, but we do know that we as CKI members can continue to make a difference in the world. Just because we are in a pandemic does not mean that we have to stop living and loving to serve. We can still live out our tenants of service, fellowship, and leadership from home. The WUM CKI District has created resources for you with ideas on how to stay active in CKI during this pandemic. The following pages of this newsletter include these resources for you to check out. Circle K International has created a Google Folder compliling all COVID-19 resources for you utilize as well. This can be found at https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/10z2rofo2_MMFkTtawUsL29Xcc_4Q8ly If there are any clubs in need of assistance, ideas, or are struggling during these times, please reach out to District Governor Katelyn Van Buren (wumcki.governor@gmail.com) or any District Board Member. We are 100% committed to helping our members and making sure that we are all okay. -Katelyn Van Buren 2020-2021 WUM CKI District Governor

CKI MEETINGS DURING A PANDEMIC CKI DOES NOT STOP, WE ADAPT! Hold club meetings despite not being able to see each other in person! Here are some ideas for getting to know your members, quick ice breakers, and fun games to play as a group during meetings!

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR MEMBERS: Soul Mate One person acts as the leader and closes their eyes or turns around in their seat. They begin listing facts about themselves. If the fact is true for the audience, they will keep their camera on. When an audience member hears a fact that is not true for themselves, they turn their camera off. When there is only one member left with their camera on other than the leader, they are declared the other's "soul mate" and will be the next leader to list facts. This is a great way to get to know club members!

Two Truths and a Lie OR Two LIES and a Truth A classic. Everyone goes around and says two truths about themselves as well as a lie. The rest of the group tries to guess which of the three facts is a lie. As a change up, you can make it where each person says two lies about themselves as well as a truth and everyone else needs to figure out what the truth is. This can be super fun and interesting!

Baby Picture Matching Before a meeting, ask everyone to send in a picture of themselves from when they were a baby/very little. Put them all in a powerpoint and go around during a meeting trying to figure out who is who. This will most likely lead to members sharing stories from when they were younger and help you all to get to know each other a bit better.

Contact WUM CKI District Governor, Katelyn Van Buren, at wumcki.governor@gmail.com with any questions!

14

Pet Show and Tell People LOVE showing of their fur babies to others. Designate a time during your meeting to let everyone introduce their pets (and maybe a story about them)! This can be a good ice breaker or nice time to take a brain break if you are covering a lot of content.

Spin the Wheel Before a meeting, go onto https://wheeldecide.com/ and create a wheel with random getting-to-knowyou questions such as "what's your favorite food?" or "tell us your favorite joke" During the meeting, go around and spin the wheel for each member to decide what they will share with the rest of the group. The questions that you decide on are super flexible and will set the tone for how the activity will go. Make sure each member has a chance to share!

Wow, Pow, Chow, Now A good activity for the start of your meetings depending on the size of your club. For this activity, everyone will go around and share about themselves. Wow is a high from the week, pow is a low, chow is something good that they've eaten recently, and now is how they are currently feeling. This is a really good way for members to be able to open up! It's very similar to "highs and lows," but has an extra little spin on it to make it more fun.

Personality Tests Have members take a few minutes to take some sort of personality test such as a free Enneagram quiz or a Love Language test. Everyone can go around and share their results (if comfortable) so that everyone can get to know each other a bit better and ultimately find out what the best way to connect with individuals would be based on their results.

House/Apartment Tours If members are willing, have them go around their house or apartment and show you around! It can be super interesting to see where other people live (channel your inner HGTV). Contact WUM CKI District Governor, Katelyn Van Buren, at wumcki.governor@gmail.com with any questions!

15

Ice Breakers and Games: Kahoots! Kahoots can actually be used for both fun and getting to know your members. You could do a random trivia Kahoot OR you could ask members for facts about themselves and turn it into a Kahoot for the rest of the group to play. (ie have a true/false slide on a specific member or list a fact and then have 4 different member names as options so that the group can guess who the fact applies to)

Draw What You See Have one person in the meeting be the "describer." You can give them 2-3 minutes to describe to the group how to draw a random item in their house (without revealing what the item is until the time is up). For example, they may have a calculator in front of them and start telling the group to "draw a rectangle with the longest sides going up vertically." Then, they would keep going to describe how to draw a calculator. At the end of the time frame, the describer will reveal their object and the group shows off what they've drawn based on the descriptions given to them. Modified:Â search for some basic images on google such as a train or a rabbit and send the picture out to chosen members who will be describers. They will describe that image during the meeting. Special Edition/Final Round:Â have everyone do their drawings on top of their heads so that even they cannot see what they are doing! This makes for some interesting results to say the lest.

Scavenger Hunts Come up with a list of common household items. During the meeting, set a timer for 30 seconds and have members go around their house individually to search for as many items that they can find in that short amount of time. Have the person bring the items back to show everyone and calculate their total (ex items: toilet paper, a spoon, a hairdryer, etc.). Members can also be palce into teams to count up scores and make it more competitive.

Contact WUM CKI District Governor, Katelyn Van Buren, at wumcki.governor@gmail.com with any questions!

16

Charades The leader of the meeting can either come up with a list of charade words to act out or go to https://www.thegamegal.com/word-generator/ to have words generated for members. Send the actor a list of words to try to act out and see how many they can have members guess in 30 seconds-1 minute. This will get everyone involved and can be a really fun bonder.

Alibi

Pick one person to be the "detective." This person will turn their volume all the way down/leave their computer. The rest of the group comes up with a fake crime to report out (the crime doesn’t really matter, it's just a fun part to be creative with). Also, pick one person to be guilty of the crime. Invite the detective back and tell them what the crime is. Next, everyone will take a turn sharing their alibi, what they were doing at the time of the crime. (Ex: “I was making green tea, I was walking my dog around the block, I was helping my sister with her math homework, etc.). Next, everyone will share their alibi a second time, except the “guilty” person who will change their alibi (Ex: I was making green tea, I was walking my bulldog around the block, I was helping my sister with her math homework, etc.) Finally, the detective has to guess who changed their alibi (in this case -”dog walker” to “bulldog walker”) and is guilty of the crime!

Pictionary A super easy way to play pictionary with your group is through https://skribbl.io/. One person should go to this site, click the blue button that says "create private room," and then they will get a link to be able to copy. They can send the link to the rest of the group, and you all take turns drawing and guessing what other people are drawing!

No Smile Game This one is GREAT for breaking up a meeting or getting people warmed up. What you do is, for 60 seconds, have everyone have their cameras on and Zoom call in gallery mode while they try their best to not smile. If they smile, they turn their cameras off and "lose." After the minute is up, the leader will start telling jokes to get people to smile until the last person remains.
