2021 Season Review After the 2020 season was cut due to the COVID pandemic, the Ichabods returned to a full schedule and recording a 28-18 record with an even 13-13 mark in the MIAA. Washburn finished the league season in seventh in the standings reaching the MIAA Tournament quarterfinals falling two games to one in the best-of-three match up with Central Missouri. From Feb. 26 to March 26, the Ichabod enjoyed a stretch of games where they won 15 of 16 games including a perfect 6 of 6 at the Washburn Invitational. Marrit mead leads Ichabods in postseason honors Washburn freshman third basemen Marrit Mead has been named a third-team All-American selection at third base as voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America. Mead is the first All-American selection for the Ichabod softball team since 2002. After being named first team all-D2CCCA Central Region and second team all-Central Region by the NFCA, Mead picked up first team D2CCA as voted on by the region's sports information directors, was voted as the top freshman in the MIAA and a firstteam all-MIAA selection at third base this season after leading the league in total hits (73) and was second overall in batting average (.453) and runs scored (45) and third in on-base percentage (.480) and stolen bases (22). She was the fourth Ichabod to receive the MIAA Freshman of the Year award after starting all 46 games as a freshman. She was a perfect 22 for 22 in stolen base attempts also recording 28 RBI and seven home runs. Her batting average this past season was third on the Ichabod single season chart and her 47 runs scored were eighth and 73 hits were seventh. She also had 29 multi-hit games and as of right now, leads the nation in hits and was 15th in total bases. Mead is the first Ichabod to earn first team all-region honors since 2018 from CoSIDA and only the second overall. Ashton Friend, an MIAA first team selection as a designated player, led the Ichabods with 12 home runs and 47 RBI, which also led the MIAA and her .720 slugging percentage was third in the MIAA as she was a first team all-region selection. Jaycee Ginter, also earned all-region accolades with second team honors and was a first team all-MIAA pick as well as a pitcher/utility player earned second team D2CCCA allregion honors. In the circle she was 14-4 with a 2.80 ERA in 19 starts with 10 complete
games and three shutouts striking out 100 batters. At the plate, Ginter was second on the team with 30 RBI recording six home runs and scoring 22 times with 35 hits and a .434 slugging percentage. All-MIAA Honors The Washburn Ichabod softball team placed five squad members on the all-MIAA softball team as Marrit Mead, Ashton Friend and Jaycee Ginter were named first team all-MIAA. Bri Francis and Hadley Kerschen were named honorable mention team and Mead also added MIAA Freshman of the Year honors. Classroom Success The Washburn Ichabod softball team placed 11 student-athletes on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll as well as an MIAA Academic Excellence honorees and two MIAA Scholar Athletes. Paige Robbins (nursing) and Autymn Schreiner (biology) were named to the MIAA Academic Excellence listing with her 4.00 grade point average. Named to the MIAA Academic Scholar Athlete squad were Bri Francis (law enforcement), Hadley Kerschen (nursing), Jaycee Ginter (nursing) and Marrit Mead (nursing) via their grade point average of at least 3.5 while earning All-MIAA honors. Student athletes earning at least a 3.0 grade point average were named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll include: Ellie Dixon (elementary education), Bri Francis (law enforcement), Ashton Friend (kinesiology), Raegen Hamm (health services administration), Jordan Hauscher (history), Hadley Kerschen (nursing), Cailey Oldemeyer (health services administration), Kimi Patterson (nursing), Paige Robbins (nursing), Maddie Stipsits (kinesiology), Ashlie Thissen (nursing), Skylar Darnell (finance), Kamryn Garvie (business) and Autymn Schreiner (biology). Gahnstrom Field named the NFCA Field of the Year The home of Washburn Ichabod softball, Gahnstrom Field, has been named the 2021 Netting Professionals/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Field of the Year as announced by the NFCA. The Washburn Ichabods have played every season of action at the Washburn Softball Complex which was renamed to Gahnstrom Field by the Washburn Board of Regents at its meeting on Oct. 29, 2020, in honor of Bill and Emilie Gahnstrom and their generous support to the Washburn softball program.
