LOCAL HEROES
What inspired you to put on a costume and give yourself an alias everyday to fight crime? PR – I was a victim of domestic violence and a lot of people kind of knew what was going on but nobody reached out to help, until one specific friend came and rescue me from that situation. She became my personal hero and after that I was inspired to become an advocate and help other victims. I think the symbol of the superhero inspires people and that’s something that’s really helped me go from a victim to a survivor. PJ – There was an incident with my son where he was hurt during a car break-in and afterwards it was the way people responded; no one was willing to help. It shook my faith in the way things were supposed to happen and I wanted to be the equaliser. Someone should be there to help people without any ulterior motive and I was going to be that person Earlier I was fortunate to catch a glimpse of you on duty when two men got into a heated argument over a car… How would you have used your super powers or skills to stop it from escalating? PJ – I would use de-escalation skills and good body placement. If you place yourself in interesting places, you can make sure nobody gets hurt. I was positioned between both people so if one person were to start throwing punches it would be very difficult. Once it de-escalated I shook hands with both guys. If that didn’t happen I would’ve dialled 999 and kept distance between them so they could not hit each other and waited for the police to come and sort it out.
So would you say technology plays a big part in crime fighting? PJ – As technology gets more advanced being a superhero becomes easier. I’m talking to this company that actually makes jet packs; I’m talking about getting a jet pack, how crazy is that? What’s the most dangerous encounter you’ve had? PR – Encountering people on the streets with knives. I think the most dangerous on ground patrol was when someone was trying to break into a car they claimed was their car, so we split our team up. PJ was down on the lot helping this person. We called the police to get them to confirm it was actually theirs. So I’m up at the top of the lot waiting and I have two other superheroes with me. Someone approaches us from across the street and I can pick up on people’s vibes pretty easily, this guy was very menacing, he recognizes who we are and what we’re doing. He says “where’s that Phoenix guy?” I insisted he wasn’t here and he looked down the street, saw Phoenix helping that guy then pulls out a gun, holds it in the air and takes off towards Phoenix. I get on the radio to warn him and Phoenix manages to get everyone else to safety. The guy ended up chasing us around for a few minutes like a game of cat and mouse.
What kind of training do you have? PR – We both have a background in martial arts. I trained in Tai Chi Kung Fu style for years. PJ – A couple of different types of taekwondo and I’ve had 25 cage fights and a couple of professional kick boxing fights; training is really self defence. Can anyone be a superhero? PJ – Yes and no. Can anyone be a crime fighting superhero? Probably not. Can anyone take on the persona of a superhero to help their cause? Then the answer’s yes. Anyone can help people around them and their country. You just have to stick to your own abilities. I can see your kits are custom made. Do you have any weapons and can you talk us through your costumes? PR – We have a lot of gear which we unfortunately couldn’t bring because of customs. The material our suits are made from is D30, which is soft but hardens up on impact. Underneath we wear custom made, bullet proof and slash resistant clothing. We have GPS tracking devices, cameras and lights so while we’re out there we can capture video evidence and provide that to the police if necessary. If the camera gets destroyed on patrol, it automatically puts it on our computer. PJ – That’s a phaser that shoots rubber bullets, pepper balls and tasing barbs. There’s an Armstar, a wearable device you can tase people with. It has a camera that you can zoom right in with and get a picture of their face. This is a ballistics riot shield; it can take anything from shotgun rounds all the way to the M35’s used to protect the Queen. If I have that in front of me and I walk in to Buckingham Palace and all the guards start shooting at me. they wouldn’t get through my shield. wuwomagazine.com
facebook.com/whatsupwhatson
So being superheroes, you are technically law enforcers? PJ – Kind of, we’re law enforcers but we don’t have law enforcement abilities. We’re more like the volunteer police department. Are you thinking of spreading out beyond America? PJ – We’re starting a UK team. We’ve got the Red Falcon and the London [Folk]; those guys are running the show. We’ve also got teams in Dubai, Oregon, Idaho, Georgia, Canada, Minnesota and South Africa.
@whatsupwhatson
wuwomagazine.com
Technology definitely enhances your abilities but would you subject yourself to biotechnology to give yourself real superpowers? PJ – I would easily. PR – I probably would not. I like everything natural. I only eat natural and organic foods so I don’t know what that would entail. I’m all about technology but I don’t want to mix it with my body. And if you could have just one superpower? PJ – I would love to fly, but I would also love to be able to rewind time. PR – I would also love to fly for the fun of it, but to help people I would love to be a healer.

COMEDY
Why did you decide to put the tape on your face? I got bored doing my other show. With my old style of comedy, I used to talk a lot. It was still props based and skill based, but I did a lot of talking. It was called Dance Monkey, Dance, which was all about my feelings of being a dancing monkey for an audience. After winning an award for it, I had a feeling the audience now expected me to just keep dancing like a monkey. I wanted to do what no one expected, a show that was silent with no tricks. I think ‘The Boy With Tape On His Face’ grew out of that idea. How is preparation for Edinburgh going? This is a return season of our last years’ show, so it’s very much prepared and ready. We took it to festivals in New Zealand and Australia a couple of years ago, developed the show and tidied it all up. And then we debuted it over here at Edinburgh last year and we’ve done a couple of UK tours. Now we’re coming up to do it at Edinburgh one more time. What’s the appeal of physical comedy for you? Maybe it goes back to my circus background. I started off doing magic tricks and then juggling. I’ve always been a props based comic more so than physical. I think all of my comedy comes from objects and that includes using the audience as an object, as well as everyday objects. I think I like props because they’re toys, maybe that’s a very childish approach of mine. I tend to still play with things and imagine different things. Do you have a favourite prop? I don’t think I have a favourite because they’re just normal objects. There’s a John Lennon puppet that I quite enjoyed making but I suppose I have favourite little jokes that I enjoy. There’s one part in the show where I build a puppet and I purposely put the shoes on the wrong way. Not many people notice it but later on with a wee bit of music, I make a point of noticing that they’re the wrong way round and I swap them. When I hear a few people laugh, then I know they’re really paying attention. I enjoy moments like that rather than enjoying a prop.
wuwomagazine.com
You’ve had a number of strange gigs. Did you prefer performing for New Zealand’s ex-prime minister or the King of Tonga? They were both in the early days of my career. The King of Tonga one was the weirder because I was doing circus sideshow stuff and it was a second birthday party for his great-granddaughter. With the King of Tonga and the Royal Family, no one is allowed to sit behind them. So it means that we had one audience on one side, one audience on the other side and one table in the middle that we were supposed to perform the whole show towards. There were a thousand people on each side of you who you could barely see; the birthday girl was sitting on this little fluffy throne in the middle of it. It was an ultimately extravagant birthday party in a five poled circus tent with strange performers and thousands of guests, all for a two year old kid! Very odd, but then we did get three days in Tonga to chill out after, so there was a bonus to it. What comedians do you admire or did you grow up looking up to? The joy to me is watching an audience laugh. Funnily enough I really get a kick out of comedians like Jimmy Carr. I think he’s brilliant because he takes the most number of words and cuts it right back to the least, which is quite clever and lovely. I really enjoy the offensiveness of Mr Frankie Boyle: he’s brilliant. Just because I put a bit of tape on my face and do this cute character, doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy some highly offensive stuff either. Do you follow his Twitter feed? Oh it’s phenomenal. Every day he just comes out with something that makes you go ‘oh my god!’ If I was to put anything like that on Twitter I would get slammed so hard. How do you go about writing for your act? I tend to go a little bit crazy and lock myself away in a room for five to six weeks with a stack of various objects that I think are kind of funny. Slowly over
facebook.com/whatsupwhatson
@whatsupwhatson
the year I buy objects that I think have potential. Similarly I collect music on my play list which I know has a good something in it.
What’s next? I’ve got a few things but I tend not to tell people. It’s a surprise.
I try and pick a bit of a theme to run through a show. In the last show the theme was balloons and I wanted a party kind of feel to the whole thing. But after this one I don’t know where it’s going, but at the same time I also try and think about things that people won’t expect. You develop a formula and then you have to re-break it over and over.

Offering bright, modern and fabulous designs for both men and women, Antoni and Alison are a quirky duo that stands out from the crowd. They offer a fantastic find for the London fashion conscious and a tea room to quench your thirst before you leave with shopping bags in hand.
Since the biker exhibition the space has further evolved with the launch of the ‘screening room’ – a fully operational unit that will produce multiple projects each year exploring everything from music, style and street documentaries to cutting-edge image installations. In an interesting and unusual twist for a fashion house, they launched ‘AllSaints Film’ this year, where a whole team is designated to finding and commissioning young innovative filmmakers and producing in-house content, all under the supervision of the brands creative director Wil Beedle. “Film is perhaps the most exciting and accessible medium wuwomagazine.com

Food futurology An interview with Dr Morgaine Gaye
Dr Morgaine Gaye is a food futurologist with plans for super powers through nutrition. Her ideas are not for the distant future, but for when you wake up tomorrow.
We sampled some of her own branded Super-shake; a smoothie that gives you every nutrient you need in two minutes. Most people blend fruit into it as well; the taste could be described as’ wooden with a slightly grainy texture’. How super do the current superfoods make us? Do they make us run faster, think better, be stronger? When you talk about superfoods, you talk about small doses of something that are really potent and based on the fact that most people have some clinical health problem, most people are acting not at capacity. But perhaps you could say that it will enable them to run faster. It will definitely make people function better, be more awake and much more effective in what they do, having all their synapses firing in a much healthier way. I think in some way if just being healthy means being super, then yes. And would you call that therapy or enhancement?

I would call that being healthy, probably in a way that tribal people are. It goes with nature and hunter gatherers, which are a rare species now. I think that we are effectively industrialised while eating demoralised food. We have an incredibly stressed life with lots of pollutants, radioactive frequencies and lots of things that are really new to our species. I think that it’s just about wuwomagazine.com
being human and being good at being human, which we’ve actually lost in a way. How soon could it be before we’ll be eating meat that was not from an animal that had consciousness? Well before we start being able to use muscle fibre and turn that into a piece of meat, there’s already a burger that came out last month that is incredibly expensive. I think it will be two years before a start-up possibility. It will be super-expensive but it will be available. With regards to some genetically modified foods, do you think the possible dangers are overstated? I think in terms of GM organisms, we have a lot of that in our diet already. When we go further into that and we start to play with nature we cannot pull it back. I think there is a bigger consequence, not just for human health and what we ingest, but also the human planet we are living on so it will affect all the species, and I think we fully do not understand the equation yet. But I think it is very hard to create a new organism and for our very old body to be able to understand how to digest that. Which superfoods are easily accessible to us that we might not know of or tend to ignore? You can pick up goji berries on the M1. Nettles are fantastic, better than wheatgrass.

MUSIC
TOP PICKS
WUWO Music Obaro Ejimiwe, AKA Ghostpoet mixes psychedelia, electronica and a stream of consciousness style spoken word to bring beauty to the mundane. WUWO interrupted Obaro’s frantic E-bay bidding spree to talk music. A lot of your lyrics are about the banality of life. Where does your interest in the oddity of the everyday come from? I guess I look at life differently, that’s what I find myself drawn to for some strange reason. Life is a constant journey of discovery. I guess it’s through that that I just come across things that seem to interest me. How do you think entering the music business, at an older age than most do, has affected the music you create? One, I don’t think I’m that old. Two, I dunno, I guess maybe if I was 18, I wouldn’t have been able to focus so much on what I wanted to do creatively and I may have got distracted by the many temptations that music can bring. I don’t really think about it. I don’t feel 30; it’s just the age that I am. Are there any writers that have influenced the way you write lyrics? No, not really, I wouldn’t say directly. I’m interested in a lot of writers across many genres but in terms of directly influencing me, I’d say no. I would’ve thought you might be interested in someone like Bukowski because of how he looks at the everyday. Who’s that? He’s a writer, Charles Bukowski. I’ll have to investigate that. What’s the biggest motivator for you to create music; heart or mind? I’d definitely say heart, but to make music that you want to release I guess then you start using mind. Personally, if you just wanna make music for purely the passion, then your mind doesn’t really have anything to do with it. If you want to get music out to potentially the masses, you’ve got to not think in terms of what kind of music shall I make that will work for the charts or work for radio, but you’re aware that there’s a public. Your mind comes into that, but it’s a constant battle between dismissing the mind and just following my heart every time. I just want to please myself. You’ve got a lot of lyrics about food. Do you have any signature dishes? Not really. I like trying new things as much as possible. So when I get the chance to cook properly, I just try and find an interesting recipe of some sort and follow it through.

What kind of music did you grow up listening to? Everything really. At home it was highlife music, African rhythms, reggae. Pirate radio I was listening to since the UK bass scene’s beginnings, old school, garage, drum’n bass and jungle. Things like that really. It kind of just developed from there. Whatever I could get my hands on really. Do you have any idols within the UK music scene? There are a lot of people that I admire. For instance: Squarepusher, Three Trapped Tigers I like a lot, endless people, I could go on forever. Augustus Pablo I really like. There’s loads of people; there’s loads. All different types of music I admire a lot. I know you don’t consider yourself a rapper but I was going to ask what you think of the resurgence of consciousness in rap? Don’t know. Don’t care. Where are you looking forward to going on tour this summer? I don’t really look forward to going anywhere in particular; I just want to play to people. It’s not really a case of trying to put one place above another; it’s about just enjoying playing... Sorry I’m getting a bit distracted because I’m trying to bid for a Rhodes on Ebay and its being annoying... Am I gonna get it? Oh go on! Go on, give it to me.... Oh come on.. Oh yes.. I don’t really mind playing anywhere I just want to meet new people and.... Ah damn I lost... I think I’ve lost...shiiiit...and what did it go for 805 ahhh! Damn! I was going to get my friend a Rhodes and it went for £805. That’s not bad actually...Shit...Ah well sorry.. I got distracted by that..now it’s done...yeah anyway.. I just want to meet new people. It’s nice to play places that I haven’t played before and it’s nice to go back to places I’ve been to before. I’m looking forward to going to Australia again. I’m going there in September, that’ll be nice and some new festivals I haven’t been to before in the UK I’m looking forward to.
Ghostpoet’s sophomore album ‘Some Say I, So I Say Light’ was released last month and you can catch him on tour around the UK and Europe this summer.

Gimmicks When human curiosity meets science and art, the results can be phenominal, though a lot of the time the result is just weird. This month WUWO brings you the end result of such projects. Durastic Park
Viewing Gum
Michael Archer, an Australian palaeontologist is attempting to clone a Tasmanian tiger (Thylacines), a species that has been extinct since 1936.
Many artists and some bored kids have used chewed gum to create their art work, but Jérémy Laffon has found a way of using raw gum sticks to build his work.
The clone will be from a Thylacine female pup, which was preserved in a pickle flask of alcohol in the Australian Museum. Before their extinction in 1936, they had survived for five million years.
With his ability to create something offbeat, his humour blends well with tongue twisting names of some of his work like HLOROPHÉNYLALANINOPLASTO
Sleepwalk; Like an Inscription
19th Century Vampire Hunting
Have you ever considered using your hidden talent while you were sleeping? Well, Lee Hadwin has, though he had no intention of being an artist in first place.
Bram Stoker’s gothic horror Dracula was printed in 1887, but this kit may suggest some people travelling to Eastern Europe feared vampires before Bram even put pen to paper and took an anti-vampire kit as a precaution.

He has been working on various architectural designs, usually depicting three dimensional geometric figures by using thousands of gum sticks.
We wonder if he has seen the ‘Jurassic Park’ project, which turned out to be a flesh eating ground for giant lizards. He reassures the public that Thylacines can be kept as pets. We’ll let Mike Tyson give it a go first!
He started sleep-scribbling circles on the walls at four years old and was sleep-drawing fairies by age 16. He can’t draw when he is awake, he never scored well in art at school and he doesn’t care about losing his unusual talent, as he doesn’t consider it his own.

SARA PASCOE | Wuwo regular
TOP PICKS
Sara Pascoe My Edinburgh To Do List Our regular fun mistress Aisling Bea is stranded in Canada. So she has passed her monthly slot onto a good and very funny friend of hers, Sara Pascoe. Sara made the most of her train journey up to perform at Edinburgh Fringe Festival by writing her aims for the event. I do stand up as a job, which makes me unstable, fun and ego-vulnerable at the best of times, but Edinburgh Festival (a month long, with shows every day) makes me EVEN WORSE. This year I am determined to cry less than once a day, so I’ve set myself a list of (realistic) aims I will achieve over four weeks, so I complete the festival a happier, calmer, more accomplished and thinner human being. 1) Do not eat any bread Are bagels bread? Or are they doughnuts? Is Pitta bread bread? Because I know it is called bread, but it’s not bread shaped, it looks like a pocket, or a flattened canoe. Both of which are fine for me to eat because they are not bloating. What? There’s bread in sandwiches is there? I hadn’t realised, well I do now and I will avoid them. CROUTONS are bread, what are they doing in my salad then, TOAST IS BREAD! HOW COMES HE’S CHANGED HIS NAME? WHAT’S HE GOT TO HIDE? In conclusion I am doing really well and BREAD IS A STEALTH FOOD. And you’ll accidentally eat him whether you like it or not. 2) Write next years’ show I have decided on a title and written that down, so very on track with this. 3) Write a novel I don’t have a title for the novel yet. And that’s because I don’t start work until my 2014 show is completed. The only way my novel won’t get written in the next three weeks, is if I don’t write my new show in the next three weeks. And that’s definitely going to happen, so we can all relax and enjoy a list of aims that are rational and sensibly ambitious.
wuwomagazine.com
4) Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. I definitely won’t. As long as I have written the best show that has ever been written and every single seat in my venue is full every night of the entire run and every single audience member laughs constantly for 58 minutes then I will be really, really chilled and laid back about the whole thing and understand that it’s just a learning process and a stepping stone to becoming a better performer..... and being in movies. 5) Don’t go to Brookes/Loft/Assembly bar These bars are where the comedians hang. It is best if I don’t see lots of people that I know, because after a drink, I get aggressively proud of how strong I am and start picking people up and giving piggy backs and shouting “punch my stomach!” The fewer of my peers that see me like this or are lifted by me, the better. Instead I make like a single mother and drink at home; alone. The only trouble is, after a few, I start wanting to go out. And unlike a single mother, I don’t have children to keep me housebound. Lucky single mothers with their obligation to stay in..... 6) All calories consumed through alcohol have to be burnt off at the gym My original thinking was that I might drink less if I know I have to run it off the next day. Instead I have been forced to work out like a crazy thing; a fainting, hung-over crazy thing. But what is great about this system, is that my housemates think I have an exercise addiction and haven’t even noticed my vast alcohol intake. Their interventions involve hiding my trainers and making me eat cake, which is much more fun than the normal interventions at home, like when Sainsbury’s Local stopped serving me after ‘the incident’; the ‘wet’ incident. 7) Learn a new language and/or an instrument I don’t remember writing this. Someone must have added it to the list while I was in the toilet.
The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is like a long, meditative holiday at a spa hotel; a spa hotel where you don’t need to go to the pool, because water falls on you from the sky at all times.
8) Sleep When I close my eyes, I get a jolt of adrenaline that shoots through me, my mind works speedily and with violent colour through dozens of imaginary scenarios when I am out of control and failing. It is so relaxing.
9) Don’t get paranoid I won’t. I know that everyone hates me and is only pretending to like me to my face so that I talk to them, then they can repeat the stupid things that I said to each other later and all really, really, really heartily laugh. I won’t fall for this again. No way.

Wuwo regular | WUWO GAME PLAY
blag it
Gameplay Here’s a list of some August games for all your black mirrors. The Wonderful 101 – August 23rd – Wii U A wonderful surprise at last year’s E3 and tipped as one of the reasons to own a Wii U. The game is developed by the highly respectful Platinum Games who are back with this charming title after the release of their last game Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance; The Wonderful 101 is a grand contrast to MGS: Revengeance, as Platinum Games wiped away their need to hack robot limbs to tiny teeny pieces. In The Wonderful 101 you take control of Wonder Red and his companions in this beautiful game as you run around saving civilians from an impending Alien invasion. What, did you want some red spandex and Deadpool? Disappointed? This may be your answer! Or an S & M Club.
Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist – August 23rd – PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, PC It’s been three years since we last saw Sam Fisher grace our screens; sadly it wasn’t everyone’s screen as predecessor Splinter Cell: Conviction, was a console exclusive for the Xbox 360. This awesome series, however, is now available multi-format including the Wii U. Before Sam Fisher eventually fought with Metal Gear’s Snake for his turn on the catheter in a retirement home, our silvery haired hero is back again to save the world. Sticking of course to the Splinter Cell Formula, you can sneak an entire level and be the perfect ghost or choose a more loud and brutal style. Will Blacklist prove to be just a warm up for Metal Gear Solid V? Or will Blacklist prove to be the greater sneak title. Shush Dishonored you don’t get a say here until your third sequel. The Bureau: XCOM Declassified - August 23rd PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, PC This prequel is a departure from the previous XCOM title Enemy Unknown; being set in the past and not a strategy game. The game is set in 1962 during the Cold War. We are told of the origins of the organisation XCOM and its encounter with a deadly extra-terrestrial army.

As an Aristocrat Some aristocratic features like the ability to eat apples through a letterbox have taken hundreds of years to develop and are impossible to copy. Fortunately, if you want to blag it as being an aristocrat, their other hobbies are a lot easier to mirror. Name drop your fake connections to the Royal Family If there is one thing they love talking about more than themselves, it’s talking about other rich people talking about them. Do say: “Reminds me of the time Lady Ogilvy popped round for a spot of early luncheon, we had a marvellous conversation regarding grandmother, Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna of Russia and how she tried to slice her nurse with a paper knife; how whimsical” Don’t say: “I walked the corgis the other day and one of them took a dump right on Prince Philip’s Air Max’s ” Chance of success: 7/10 Marry a distant(ish) and rich relative This is a common power-play manoeuvre amongst the landed gentry to ensure continued power, connections and influence across other powerful houses. Some say this is an outdated concept, but with Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Diana all being blood relatives, it seems to still be a popular arrangement. Extra blagging points awarded for those who marry above their standing. Be careful though, some royal houses destroyed themselves through intensive inbreeding, creating children who could neither chew food nor speak. Chance of success: 5/10

To fit in, simply pick two animals such as a horse and a badger, stick them together and put some Latin underneath it. Chance of success: 7/10 Buy yourself a peerage In the last century there have been four scandals regarding cash for honours. The most common method involves slipping a large amount of money or loans into a political party’s fund with a few winks and nudges.
The game also promises to be more than just a third person shooter complex, where you run around spilling green gunk with a hand cannon. It has been confirmed that the game will explore homosexuality, a topic not commonly shown in TV and film. It will do so through the character Dr Weir, a brilliant scientist who is a closeted homosexual with political views that go against the conservative elite.

Create a coat of arms Keeping up with all the marriages, wars and scandals was a difficult task and making sure you were rooting for the right team used to be quite confusing. To make this simpler but without access to brand managers or Photoshop, people made badges indicating family, supporters, ranking and a phrase. These usually consisted of a pretty flower or make believe animals vaguely resembling Pokémon.
