Caring A dedicated group of Upper School students participates in the Peer Counselor program, where they are trained to help, listen, and support fellow classmates. Students engage in group or one-on-one discussions about relevant issues that they face. They relate to each other in a supportive environment with assured trust and respect.

“Windward is a caring and supportive community, and our peer counselors exemplify that spirit of mutual respect. I am so impressed by how they reach out to younger Windward students to help them address problems they face.” — Tammy Clem, Director of Counseling Services, Middle School

Well Informed Windward faculty members have designed innovative programs that challenge our students every day. They have collaborated with professors from leading universities to develop an activelearning instructional model appropriate for secondary school. The techniques and technology have proven to more fully engage students in the learning process. The classrooms, labs, and teaching spaces in the Science, Dance & Music Center and Center for Teaching & Learning promote active learning and close collaboration between teachers and students.

“Speaking for The Edward E Foundation, we have been impressed by how effectively Windward School has adapted the active learning model to secondary education. This instructional paradigm has significant implications for students and their ability to make sense of multiple data points. The collaborative nature of this model anticipates how students will continue to manage the increasingly ambiguous nature of problem solving so critical to learning. We will watch with care how Windward School develops this program, making it accessible for others interested in forward looking methods of teaching. — Robert Hallett, Executive Director, Edward E. Ford Foundation

Responsible Windward fosters a culture of environmental awareness, shaping our priorities, decisions, and actions according to their environmental impact. The Center for Teaching & Learning and the Science, Dance & Music Center were built to meet the highest design and construction criteria, which promote ideal student learning, healthy buildings, and environmental sustainability. We are proud to note that Windward is the first school in Los Angeles to receive LEED for Schools GOLD Certification.

"Supporting Windward's Capital Campaign was an easy decision when we heard about its LEED for Schools initiative. Windward's dedication to building world-class facilities that also adhere to green building practices makes us proud to be part of this amazing community. Windward sets an example of responsible environmental stewardship for our students as well as other schools." — Cami & Howard Gordon, parents of Micah ’11 & Arlo ’14

Prepared Windward supports students in their personal, social, and intellectual development and fosters excellence in all disciplines. Teachers guide students in mastering skills, acquiring knowledge, and thinking critically, so that they may lead responsible and fulfilling lives.

"My experience at Windward completely defined the way I approach relationships with faculty. Because of Windward, I expect close relationships with my professors to be the norm rather than the exception, and this has encouraged me to be proactive, whether it be seeking out a professor at office hours or asking faculty member for a research position in his or her lab." — Ben Lerman '10, Stanford University

"I arrived at college well prepared -- academically and personally -- thanks to my Windward experience. My courses at Windward were academically challenging, but my teachers were always willing to help me. Their support gave me the confidence to build strong relationships with my college professors that truly and positively impacted my college education." — Zoe Kasiske '06, University of Wisconsin

Ethical Windward’s teachers and programs instill in our students the importance of maintaining a strong set of values that reinforce ethical thinking and behavior.

“At Windward, students often engage with others…and draw from sources (like books and websites) to gather information and find inspiration. The key, though, is that they distinguish what they find from their own thinking. Ethical learning involves honing this capacity, and Windward's faculty members are committed to teaching toward this goal. As ethical learners today and ethical scholars and leaders tomorrow, they will make the most of their Windward educations.” — Dr. Bradley Zakarin, Acting Assistant Dean for Academic Integrity, Northwestern University

Well Balanced Windward offers a curriculum that balances scholastic achievement with a healthy and supportive learning environment, while helping students reach their full potential inside the classroom and out. The variety of extracurricular offerings allows students to explore their own path and carve a personal niche within the school community.

“Our son and daughter are two very different people, and Windward provided the nurturing environment that supported each of them as they discovered their passions. They thrived academically and also had the opportunities to excel in the arts and athletics.” — Scott & Marsha Jacks, Former Board Chair, parents of Lauren '06 & Greg '08

Make a Gift The success of the Capital Campaign depends on the generosity of the entire Windward Community. Capital Campaign gifts are typically ten times Annual Fund gifts. As such, contributions can be made over a three- to five-year period. All contributions are appreciated and make a significant impact on the school. There are several ways to give:

Cash, Check, or Credit Card An outright cash donation is a fully tax deductible gift in the tax year given, within the guidelines established by the IRS. Cash gifts can be made by check or can be charged to your Visa or MasterCard. Credit card gifts can be made over the phone at 310.391.7127, ext. 283, or online at www.windwardschool.org/donate.

Pledges Windward welcomes your gift through a pledge – a formal statement of intention to make a gift to the School. With a pledge, you may complete your gift by making regular payments over time.

A gift to Windward of appreciated securities entitles the donor to a charitable deduction for its full current market value, without paying the capital gains tax on the appreciation, which would be required if the securities were sold for personal gain. Contact the Advancement Office for stock transfer instructions.

Matching Gifts Many companies will match gifts that their employees (and sometimes spouses of employees) make to secondary schools. Please send your company’s matching gift form along with your gift.

Planned Giving Donors may wish to consider giving through such means as wills, life insurance, bequests, or charitable trusts. Windward recommends that you contact your financial planner for information about how planned giving can earn valuable income-tax deductions and reduce your estate taxes. For more information on any of the above ways to give, please contact the Advancement Office at 310.391.7127.

"Just as Windward changes our families’ lives, so too do we change Windward. Each of us brings something special and valuable to our community. Without our active involvement, Windward would not be the outstanding school it is today. It is our essential responsibility to ensure that this community continues to thrive for the next generation of families. In so doing, we honor all those that came before us who helped provide us with the extraordinary place that Windward is." — Tony Rubin and Linda Bernstein Rubin, parents of Jacob '10 and Gena '15
