2014-2015

Welcome

WELCOME ear Friends, This issue of the Windward Report on Philanthropy celebrates the many individuals and families who contributed to the ongoing growth and evolution of our community during the course of the 20142015 school year. Every demonstration of support matters, and the ways in which our donors and volunteers direct their time and resources towards helping Windward realize its ambitious goals are deeply appreciated. Throughout our school’s history, parents, alumni, faculty, trustees, and others from both inside and outside our immediate community have been directly responsible for ensuring that Windward has the resources it needs to continue providing a cutting-edge education to students today while planning the evolutionary steps that will result in an even stronger school tomorrow. To all who have contributed to this ongoing effort, we thank you for your vision and generosity. Windward’s founders were pioneers of a different time, but they took bold action about something they believed in, and the strength of those ideas inspired others to do the same. More than four decades ago, Shirley Windward and Carl Parsons sought to create an independent school based on the notion that the process of learning should mean much more than rote memorization. Instead, they felt that students would respond to – and ultimately benefit from – a learning community in which critical thinking skills and originality could be encouraged by collaborative academic discussions and a course of study that emphasized the relationships among different disciplines.

02

While our school has since grown and changed to a tremendous extent, our journey forward continues on a similarly ambitious path, still guided by our founding values and vision to provide a dynamic education within a nurturing learning community. As today’s faculty teams continue a new cycle of extensive deep research, they leverage our growing partnerships with leading universities, experts, and business leaders, ultimately seeking out the best practices and emerging data across the country that will help inform our ongoing development of tomorrow’s cutting-edge programs and facilities for education. The initial results of this work are already being incorporated into programs across the curriculum and are being prototyped in several new state-of-the art environments for learning that are equipped with cutting edge tools and designed to promote cross-pollination of ideas. It is no accident that our newest programs and spaces reflect elements of contemporary creative workplaces and spaces for brainstorming. As students tinker and create during projects that cross disciplines, they will develop critical thinking abilities, come to better understand the connections between different elements of their world, and become comfortable with experimentation, idea synthesis, and creativity. Perhaps most important of all in our globalized world, they will learn and thrive on collaboration, guided by educational training that emphasizes the power of teamwork with others. Innovation is incredibly hard work that requires intention, even if you embark on a journey without knowing what the end result will be. And for this, we are immensely grateful for the deep commitment and leadership demonstrated by our Board of Trustees, who bring their

considerable experiences and unique talents to help steward our ambitious plans and ensure that as we grow and innovate further, we continue to follow the path laid out in the school’s strategic plan. Special thanks are also due to our departing trustees Mary Brussell, Michael Hackman, Irene Kleinberg, and George Rosenthal for their years of service to Windward in many ways. They have each been deeply involved in the life of the school and their significant contributions to our community will continue to stand as a model for all who follow in their path. We especially want to recognize the contributions of Irene Kleinberg, who served as Chair of the Board of Trustees during a critical period in Windward’s development and has served the school for nearly 30 years. On a personal note, our longstanding and fruitful partnership together has created a link between the Board Chair and Head of School that serves as a valuable conduit between the school’s leadership teams, helping Windward remain nimble during this period of tremendous growth. This is an exciting time of discovery, and the ultimate outcome of our ambitious plans will require the continued support, commitment, teamwork, and contributions of everyone who believes that education is the greatest gift of lasting significance that can be given to the world of tomorrow. We think that a true commitment to innovation provides both a special opportunity during transformational times– as well as great responsibility. Our collective acceptance of that challenge will provide immense support to efforts that have immeasurable value to society, impacting individual lives today and shaping the world to come. With deep gratitude,

Tom Gilder Head of School

Elliot Gordon ’74 Chair, Board of Trustees

REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY

THANK YOU TO OUR DEPARTING TRUSTEES We are deeply grateful to all who have served as Trustees since the School was founded in 1971, and we salute the following Trustees, who are leaving the Board this year, for their commitment to Windward. As you join the special group of former Trustees, please know that you are always a member of the Windward community, and we look forward to your continued involvement in the life of the school.

MARY BRUSSELL

IRENE KLEINBERG

Mary Brussell served a one-year term as Trustee as part of her role as President of the Windward Parent Guild for the 2014-15 academic year. Windward is able to accomplish so much in part to the leadership of the Parent Guild committees supporting Fundraising, Athletics, Performing Arts, and so many other programs on campus. Mary will continue to provide the Parent Guild her experience and guidance as she serves as the Past President on the Executive Committee for the 2015-16 academic year.

Irene Kleinberg has dedicated nearly 30 years of service to Windward having joined the Board in 1986. She was a member of Windward’s first strategic planning committee in 1987, and she chaired the next strategic planning committee. Irene was the Board Chair from 1991 to 1996 and throughout her time was involved in various Board committees including Executive, Finance, Trustees, Campaign Steering, and Strategic Planning. Irene also served as the Parent Guild President from 1986 to 1988. In this role, she organized a series of small group dinners in parents homes that gave Tom Gilder an opportunity to conduct a listening tour with Windward community members during his first years as Head of School. These small group dinners were pivotal in the successful implementation of Windward’s first Strategic Plan. Irene leaves behind a legacy as a leader and a supporter of the arts with the aptly named Irene Kleinberg Theater. Windward is grateful for Irene’s dedication and commitment throughout the years.

MICHAEL HACKMAN Michael Hackman joined the Board in 2006 and has served as a member of the Finance Committee, approving budgets that provided the resources for Windward to research best practices and to forge partnerships that have made the school a model for innovation. Michael also served an instrumental role in the development of Windward’s current Strategic Plan. As a member of the Investment Committee, Michael helped to update the school’s investment policy and guided the school in its selection of an investment advisor for the Windward Endowment. The creation of the endowment was a major goal of the current Strategic Plan. Michael’s dedication and work on numerous Board committees made him instrumental in the successful implementation of the Strategic Plan. Michael and his wife Caroline have given generously to the school, supporting our last campaign, opening their home to many donor and volunteer events, and giving annually to the Windward Fund and the Spring Event.

GEORGE ROSENTHAL George Rosenthal joined the Board in 2010 and has served as a dedicated member of the latest Strategic Planning Committee and the Finance Committee. In his role on the Investment Committee, George worked to update the school’s investment policy and create the Windward Endowment, which was an important goal of the current Strategic Plan. Through his various roles on the Board, George was instrumental in the successful implementation of the Strategic Plan. In addition, George has hosted a number of events for Windward at his vineyard in Malibu, including a Board Retreat. George’s generosity as a donor as well as his involvement as a parent, and now as a grandparent, are deeply appreciated.

WINDWARD

FINANCIAL AID indward School’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity is an integral part of its educational fabric and is inextricably linked to the mission of the School. Windward School is dedicated to creating a welcoming community that embraces the individuality of each of its members, encourages students to develop a deep understanding of identity, and fosters an inclusive environment where diversity is both recognized and honored. A robust Financial Aid Program makes a Windward education possible for qualified students regardless of financial ability and is critical to ensuring economic diversity and attracting talented students of all backgrounds. Investment in financial aid pays dividends that can be life-changing.

CAROL ANTOINETTE (POWELL) ‘13

FINANCIAL AID SPOTLIGHT efore Windward, I didn’t really know what family meant,” shared Carol Antoinette (Powell) ‘13, but this was not always the case, as Carol readily admits. Her mother, Loretta Powell, was determined for Carol to receive a more dynamic education than was possible from the home schools in their neighborhood. When she applied to Windward for her daughter’s freshman year, Carol was not excited about the idea. When the acceptance letter arrived and offered a significant financial aid award, Loretta knew this opportunity was too good to pass up and unilaterally made the decision for Carol to attend. She told Carol, “If they’re going to give you money to go to that school, you are going to get that dynamic education.” Today Carol laughs as she recalls her “middle-school attitude” at the time, determined that she would not talk to anybody at Windward. “That lasted about three months because every time I went to class, teachers were asking me how I was doing, and wanting to tutor me, and eat lunch with me. It was very hard to be distant...because these people cared!” There were a number of teachers and coaches at Windward who played, and continue to play, an extremely important role in Carol’s life. Carol raves about her basketball coach, “Vanessa Nygaard was the best thing that could have ever happened to me.” Through Vanessa’s encouragement, Carol began to open up to her classmates and make friends, and form strong mentoring relationships with her teachers. During her time at Windward, she played Varsity basketball, was the captain of the Dance Company, and performed

in the fall plays and spring musicals. Carol learned that by accepting the nurturing community inherent at Windward, she could grow and succeed in ways she never imagined possible - including attending the University of Southern California, where she is majoring in Narrative Studies with a double minor in theater and dance. Carol acknowledges that her success “would not be possible without Tom Gilder and all the donors who gave in order for there to be a financial aid program for me to go to Windward and to see the opportunities that a dynamic education has to offer and made me into the person I am today.”

Even though I’m no longer sitting in those classrooms, I’m still getting that dynamic education because the Windward family is eternal. - CAROL ANTOINETTE (POWELL) ‘13 ALUMNA

REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY arol continues to stay connected with Windward and benefit from the community. She recently shot her first ever dance music video, titled “Project Missy”, starring several members of the Windward Dance Company, in early June. In addition, she has come back to campus for two years in a row to work as a guest choreographer with the Windward Dance Company, sharing her expertise with students. “There will never be a time where returning back to Windward to contribute to the growth of the community will not be the most important thing in the world to me,” says the alumna. She “considers Windward the gift that keeps on giving.” Carol has been able to take advantage of the Windward Network and is looking forward to working with the alumni that she has connected with in the future. “Even though I’m no longer sitting in those classrooms, I’m still getting that dynamic education because the Windward family is eternal.”

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT:

AN INVESTMENT IN LIFELONG LEARNING ach of Windward’s faculty and staff members bring unique talents, training, and experiences to their positions. While they have an incredibly diverse range of backgrounds, they uniformly share a love and commitment to life-long learning. At Windward, this is not only welcomed, but encouraged and vigorously supported through a formal program that ensures both teachers and staff members continue

12

Annual Fund: Your Dollars at Work

growing as professionals by staying abreast of developments in their areas of interest, creating new relationships with others in their field, or taking on the challenge of enhancing their expertise by acquiring an entirely new skill. Support to Windward’s Annual Fund has made this valuable program of betterment available for years, and it has recently been formally re-dubbed as “Research and Development” to more accurately reflect its wide-ranging goals and impact.

Research and Development funding is allocated on a continuous basis throughout the year as opportunities arise. According to the program’s latest coordinator, Daniel Guitierrez, who has himself been a beneficiary of funds on numerous occasions throughout the years, “The ability to support faculty and staff in their Research and Development requests allows Windward to improve the human capital of our school as a collective whole. There are a variety of different ways in which these funds will be used by participants, but regardless of the activities they are taking part in, the result is that they will return to Windward more knowledgeable and experienced than they were before.” On an annual basis, the program enables dozens of Windward faculty and staff to attend workshops, visit other independent schools or universities to form partnerships and even in some cases to support the pursuit of advanced degrees. Recently, a joint Windward team working on growth and engagement attended the iTeach event at San Domenico School, an annual conference that is specifically geared towards providing professional development for teachers creating ways of integrating iPads and other technology into their schools. Staff are the direct beneficiaries of these opportunities as well. During the multi-year development of Windward’s new website, members of the Communications team attended a weeklong seminar that covered innovative uses of social media, video storytelling, and graphic design – all of which influenced decisions that eventually yielded the finished product introduced this past summer.

makes in its employees is indicative of the importance it places on cultivating and retaining talent. The impact of these research experiences is directly linked to program development and ongoing innovation at Windward. In an effort to continue to build upon the progress of the STEAM initiative, representatives from the science and visual arts departments attended a conference at Stanford University in the fall of 2014 that brought inspiration for the future of cross-curricular collaboration. Their journey led to the development of new maker programs promoting student engagement and helped inform the finished plans for the C.R.E.A.T.E. Studio, which will open in Fall 2015 and prepare students for future experiences with hands-on learning. While each Research and Development application is considered on an individual basis, there is one prime criterion on which all activities are evaluated. According to Guitierrez, “The ultimate question we think about is if we are using monies in a way that will result in a tangible improvement in student learning and outcomes.” No matter what the form of the Research and Development activity may be, the participant or attendees will enhance the school community with newfound knowledge, perspective, and ideas. Though the benefits are many, this program is not simply about self-improvement; it is about improvement that will directly impact Windward’s students as well.

Even the newest employees can benefit, particularly teachers who are building early career experience or working professionals who can enhance the delivery of their knowledge by practicing their mastery of new classroom techniques. As one might imagine, for faculty and staff who are considering Windward as a possible place to continue their career, the promise of funding that ensures continual professional development is enormously appealing. In the same way, the investment Windward

PROGRAM ENHANCEMENTS ontributions to the Windward Annual Fund are also investments in the growth of programs and initiatives. With this support, Windward faculty have the equipment, tools, and resources necessary to constantly ensure students receive the best education possible. From new technologies to new texts and everything in between, the Program Enhancement budget is a critical way to ensure that Windward is able to continue pursuing its mission to provide an ever-more dynamic education for students. Here are is a small sampling of the many ways that Annual Fund support of program enhancements have brought about recent innovations and additions of note:

Serious about Business in Entrepreneurship Synthesizing ideas from the Stanford University’s Educator’s Workshop for Entrepreneurial programs and the experiential methods developed by serial entrepreneurs behind the Lean Launch Pad (LLP) methodology, members of Windward’s Entrepreneurship team have further developed the robust and growing program at Windward. The ideas presented in classes and extracurricular opportunities are derived in part from cutting edge curriculum taught at the college and MBA levels, helping turn Windward into a nationwide leader in entrepreneurial education at the secondary level. Last year’s new Upper School elective class, Think Differently, provides tools on problem solving to encourage flexibility and develop a worldview that will benefit Windward students who have a desire to become entrepreneurs. Moreover, LLPbased methodology has been introduced in the Financial Algebra class. Further plans are in the works to extend the Entrepreneurship program into a middle school elective and are also being co-developed alongside future projects for the prototype new maker spaces on campus.

In addition to growing and expanding the opportunities for students to work with the Business Case Study Competition (a collaboration with Bain Consulting Firm), the student “Buy it on the Bridge” program has given Windwardians a chance to showcase and sell their own products, ranging from t-shirts to cellphone cases and custom jewelry. Over the year, students have also had the opportunity to hear from and talk to young entrepreneurs as well as established entrepreneurs, promoting a better understanding of ways in which ideas and determination can overcome barriers to becoming a business owner at any age. Equipped with practical advice, potential Windward entrepreneurs are encouraged to go beyond the boundaries of normal thought with the goal of developing new ideas and taking informed risks in their development of exciting concepts.

REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY

Finding Balance Through Challenge Success Windward’s second year of working on its own version of the Challenge Success program first started by Stanford University brought about strides in the work being done to increase growth and engagement at all grade levels while developing ways to offset pressures that students might perceive in their lives. Data showing that students can excel in environments where they feel supported and can develop relationships rooted in openness and trust was the catalyst for the year’s “Shadow Day” experiment. This provided educators with a chance to follow the daily routine of a specific student, giving a better first-hand sense of what the everyday Windward experience is like. The exercise provided new perspectives on how students anticipate tests and quizzes and how the learning process varies along with energy - from class to class during course of the school day. The quest for balance and optimal performance helped contribute to the discussions that resulted in the introduction of a later start day once a week in the 2015-16 school year, allowing students with a mid-week chance to catch up a bit on sleep. Conversations about helping teens grow and learn in the best possible way continued with visits this year from speakers such as educational specialist Professor Yong Zhao and clinical psychologist Dr. Michael Thompson, author of The Pressured Child. Discussion about growth and engagement continues as a visit from Stanford’s Challenge Success director Dr. Denise Pope kicks off the 201516 school year with workshops for faculty and the year’s first community speaker presentation for parents.

Exploring and Learning with Hands-On Technologies With the acquisition of 3D printers, arduino microcontrollers and other technologies, Windward’s faculty and students have explored incredible new frontiers across the curriculum along with the guidance of expert consultants and authors Joan Horvath and Rich Cameron of Nonscriptum. Over the last year, new projects were developed to engage students with a wide array of challenges involving emerging technological tools, including: • Science students considered the biological and ecological possibilities of man-made environments by creating 3D printed coral, which were used for direct experimentation by being used in a tank along with their original natural counterparts in order to determine whether aquatic life forms would notice the difference between the two habitats. • The creation of the “Haunted Dress” brought the study of wearable technologies to theatre and art students learning costume design. Work on a gown tailored with wire, outfitted with LED lights, and studded with “sewable” microprocessors helped provide a hands-on example of ways that designers and actors might showcase new forms of magic on stage and eventually modify these technologies for everyday use. • Design thinking and prototyping made its way into numerous cross-disciplinary projects over the course of the year, including a project in the middle school to demonstrate physical forces by creating concepts for miniature playground equipment, then using computer design programs and 3D printing processes to turn these ideas into reality.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHTS

Philanthropy and volunteerism have helped make Windward the great educational institution that it is today, and we celebrate all those who give their time and support to the school.

TEDDY AND EMILY GREENSPAN Teddy and Emily Greenspan, parents of Nolan ’19, recently organized and hosted a private Reception and Guided Tour at LACMA in support of the Windward Visual and Media Arts Council. In addition to being generous Annual Fund donors, Teddy served as a Class Captain for the 8th Grade Annual Fund Volunteers, and Emily was an 8th grade level parent representative and will be a 9th grade level parent representative in the coming year. Emily has also spent time as a Culinart volunteer in the Pavilion and volunteers for various grade level activities throughout the school year. Teddy and Emily have been incredibly generous donors to the Spring Event auction and have spearheaded Windward’s efforts to continue auction fundraising throughout the year by establishing a Charitybuzz account.

MONTE LEMANN AND CC PULITZER-LEMANN Monte Lemann and CC Pulitzer-Lemann have also been generous supporters of Windward. Parents to Spencer ’18, Monte and CC have been steadfast donors to the Annual Fund and Spring Event. Major Gifts

MAJOR GIFTS y partnering with Tom Gilder and our Board of Trustees, Major Gifts donors provide the necessary funding for Windward to take significant steps forward in realizing our Strategic Plan, including enhancing academic programs, upgrading facilities, and building our endowment to ensure the long term financial health of the school. Through the leadership of Major Gifts Co-Chairs Bryan Ezralow, Tony Rubin, and Perrie Weiner, Windward has raised over $7M in gifts that are transformational and help ensure that Windward continues to innovate and thrive. Major Gifts are often multiple year pledges from a small number of families who have made the philanthropic commitment to support the school at the highest level, above and beyond their gifts to the Annual Fund. Thank you to each of the families who have made these generous gifts which will impact Windward School for years to come.

MAKING AN IMPACT: MAJOR GIFTS AT WORK

Windward School has been fortunate to receive transformative Major Gifts, giving our students unparalleled access to innovative programs, unique partnerships, as well as exceptional facilities and resources. Below are a few highlighted areas where Major Gifts have made an impact.

STUDENT PEAK PERFORMANCE CENTER

Education is a matter of engaging more than the mind alone. Allowing young people to participate in a range of academic and extracurricular experiences fosters social growth and responsibility. Windward partnered with Stanford University’s Challenge Success program to ensure that our students have a healthy balance in their lives. Whether they are preparing for a big test, a part in an upcoming play, or an athletic contest, the support our students receive is critical to their performance. Gifts to the Peak Performance Center have helped Windward create the optimal learning and training environment for students, lending a healthy balance for success.

PERFORMING AND VISUAL ARTS INITIATIVE

Creativity and innovation have been core values of Windward School since its inception. The Performing and Visual Arts Initiative has given Windward the ability to expand its programming and use of guest artists, while also providing students with the experience of performing in

professional venues. Students have had the opportunity to perform at the Skirball Center, the Grammy Museum, the Japan America Aratani Theater, UCLA’s Freud Playhouse, the AT&T Center and the Conga Room at L.A. Live.

STEAM

The STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) program strives to inspire and foster innovation, as well as to prepare students for effective involvement in an increasingly technological society. Major gifts to STEAM have not only enabled unique internship partnerships with private companies AECOM and Boeing, but these gifts have also opened up incredible opportunities for our increasingly successful robotics program, allowed for the purchase and use of 3D printers, and funded the design and construction of an C.R.E.A.T.E. Studio and Maker Space.

GLOBAL STUDIES

Global Studies uses a cross-cultural team teaching model and a design thinking based approach to learning. Gifts in support of the Global Studies

Initiative have ensured that Windward offers students new opportunities to learn about global issues and realize their roles as global citizens by taking classes through the Global Online Academy or participating in one of the many international trips to China, the Dominican Republic, Peru, Paris, Cambodia, Guatemala, and Nicaragua.

FINANCIAL AID Windward School has been steadfastly committed to financial aid since its founding by Shirley Windward. The Financial Aid budget has grown to over $2.4 million dollars in the 2014-15 academic year, providing financial assistance to over 15% of our student population. Financial Aid recipients averaged a 3.7 GPA while at Windward, and in the last five years, every student who has received financial aid has gone on to college attending such prestigious institutions as Harvard, NYU, Stanford, USC, UC Berkeley, and UCLA.

Ways to Give

WAYS TO GIVE indward, like most independent schools, relies upon charitable gifts beyond tuition income to support school programs. The special attributes that set Windward apart — small classes, innovative teaching, a diverse student body, well-maintained facilities, and dynamic offerings beyond core classes — are expensive. Rather than increasing tuition to support them, we solicit tax-deductible donations through various initiatives that help the school and allow families to give based on their ability.

CASH, CHECK, OR CREDIT CARD

Your cash gift is tax deductible within the guidelines established by the IRS. Cash gifts can be made by check or can be charged to your Visa, MasterCard or American Express. Credit card gifts can be made online at www.windwardschool.org/give or by contacting Michael Bognanno at 424-289-1042.

You can check with your employer or on the Windward website at www.windwardschool.org/waystogive to determine if you gift is eligible for matching. Simply send us the appropriate paperwork from your employer’s Human Resources Department, and your gift to Windward School will be matched according to your company’s guidelines. We will take care of the rest.
