The long-standing relationship with WWINN customer Sonion recently saw a new milestone, when eight ProMicro assembly platforms were shipped to the Sonion site in Vietnam. These platforms are part of an assembly line developed by Sonion. Sonion’s headquarters are in Denmark and it has facilities in Poland, China, Vietnam, USA and the Netherlands. The company produces microacoustic transducers and micromechanical components for hearing instruments and other (medical) devices. This Sonion project marked WWINN’s re-entry into Vietnam, one of Southeast Asia’s upcoming industrial tigers.
23-27 April 2012 - Hall 17, Stand C48/9 Hannover, Germany - HANNOVER MESSE 2012 www.hannovermesse.de The world’s premier showcase for industrial technology, including the Industrial Automation trade fair. WWINN will participate in the IVAM “Micro, Nano, Materials” Product Market, incorporated into the new special display area “Microtechnology – Smart Systems for Automation”.
The ProMicro platforms were used to build part of an assembly line for receivers for a new type of hearing aid. Assembly includes laser welding, gluing micro components and cutting a membrane from thin foil. Each semi-automatic ProMicro platform on the line is assigned a specific task. The project started off with a joint session between IMS and Sonion to optimize the processes and the design for assembly. Subsequently, INNLab performed a small feasibility study for a complex assembly process. This was followed by the building of a prototype platform by IMS and finally resulted in

During final adjustments, the close cooperation was once more stressed by the contribution of Sonion Poland validation and maintenance engineers and the support of a team of process engineers from Sonion Amsterdam. Late last year, a team of IMS and Sonion engineers completed installing the realized equipments in Vietnam. Subsequently, Sonion successfully started production.

With an ageing population, the demand for cost-effective healthcare will increase further, with fewer workers to support the economy in general and the growing healthcare sector in particular. Robotics may offer a solution. Industrial robots have been around for decades and the WWINN Group is one of the many parties making smart use of the robot’s capabilities for providing (micro) assembly solutions.
care & cure and the household domain. To seize these social and economic opportunities, knowledge and R&D institutions and high-tech companies in the Twente region established the LEO – Center for Service Robotics. LEO aims to raise the visibility of robotics research in (the eastern part of) the Netherlands, and to promote collaborative business development projects in service robotics.
Service robotics is now on the rise as an exciting new field of robot applications. Service robots can be utilised in industry for non-manufacturing tasks, such as inspection, and they can gradually find their way into
IMS is one of the partners in LEO and will host a workshop entitled “From human interaction, 3D movement to dike inspection” at the WWINN headquarters in Almelo on 28 March 2012.
Working together on winning innovations On Thursday, 16 February, WWINN organised a special event for customers and other business contacts with the help of various Dutch high-tech companies and initiatives to demonstrate the power of advanced technology and high-level collaboration. A representative from the Drive & Control company Bosch Rexroth gave a lecture on the practical dimensioning of the correct servo drive. Solution provider for designing and building products and systems Cadmes presented those in attendance with a life-like experience related to the use of 3D communication as a means for improving internal and external communication.

RoboCup@Home league, the international benchmark in the area of domestic service robots. At the event, the humanoid Nao robot was demonstrated, which is used by BORG to investigate human-robot interaction. Another crowd pleaser was Marc Cornelissen’s inspiring presentation on his expeditions to the North and South Poles and the importance of working in teams to succeed in such adventurous undertakings as well as in business ventures.
There was an exhibition on the workshop floor in Almelo that featured Solar Team Twente, which is participating in the biennial World Solar Challenge in Australia and is sponsored by WWINN, the BORG Robocup@Home team, Verbeterinzicht, productivity solutions software provider FullFact, and mechatronics solution provider Staübli. WWINN Group subsidiaries INNLab, IMS and ESPS, of course, also demonstrated their solutions and expertise in micro-assembly, manufacturability and productivity. One of the highlights was the lecture by BORG, from the Artificial Intelligence Department of the University of Groningen. BORG is the first Dutch team in the
An additional benefit of this modularisation approach is that the customer is given insight into the specific design and costs of their platform at an early engineering stage. Examples in the IMS portfolio are the ProMicro and ProFast assembly platforms, as well as the ProMicro Dial, which is an extension of the ProMicro platform with a dial table for loading parts and unloading finished products.
Chinese consumer electronics manufacturers are under increasing pressure to automate their production to ensure high-quality, clean products. They also have to increase their production capacity to match rising market demand, for example in the smartphone and tablet sectors. IMS can offer them the high-speed, flexible solutions they require. The market research yielded promising leads with manufacturers of micro components. IMS is now intensifying its marketing efforts to seize the opportunities in China.
Measure to improve Impressions of the event
Making manufacturing solutions modular A special Module group has been established within IMS. This fits in with IMS’s strategy to create a portfolio comprising open, modular and generic platforms that are equipped with standard manufacturing modules and can be fitted with product-specific tooling and other clientspecific modules. This approach reduces the engineering time for specific customer orders and lowers risks and costs, thereby offering IMS and their partners greater market potential. The modular build-up facilitates flexible automation using the proven technology of a variety of modules. In operation, it greatly reduces the exchange times for tooling when a family of related products is being manufactured.
There are plenty of opportunities for IMS in the Chinese manufacturing industry. That is the main conclusion of IMS’s systematic market research, focusing on the telecoms industry. This research was conducted by WWINN’s Chinese partner Langtech and supported financially by NL Agency of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture & Innovation.

The IMS Module group is currently engaged in designing a new generic platform for the highly accurate assembly of small products in a clean environment. With the new platform, assembly accuracies enter the mu range (micrometers), hence its working title ProMu. It is expected to hit the market this summer.

On the 22nd of March and on the 19th of April, ESPS and Verbeterinzicht will jointly host a free OEE Workshop at the ESPS residence in Almelo. Verbeterinzicht helps companies gain valuable results by finding and eliminating losses in production processes. ESPS has build up substantial experience with OEE and productivity improvements during their support projects.
Tools for West Timor
Gaining insight in OEE and production losses will save resources and ultimately lead to higher profits. This workshop will give the participants new insights in improving the OEE of their production machines, with sustainable results. If you’d like to participate in this free OEE Workshop (in Dutch), please send your application to oee@esps.nl

The WWINN Group really values corporate social responsibility. For example, WWINN and its subsidiary ESPS support the Tynaarlo West Timor Foundation, which aims to support local development in West Timor. One of the initiatives was to collect used (power) tools and ship them to West Timor, where they will be used to build furniture for a local school. At the instigation of ESPS Managing Director Edwin Jongedijk, the costs of this

shipment are sponsored by WWINN and Meilink Group, WWINN’s logistics partner. The tools are expected to arrive in West Timor any time now. Nex to this initiative, ESPS started a robot project with the Akademi Teknik Kupang, the local technical university of Kupang, Indonesia. ESPS will build a smart robot and set up corresponding training programs which the university can use as part of its teaching curriculum.

WWINN will be making its first appearance at the Automatica international trade fair in Munich, Germany from 22 to 25 May 2012. This is one of the outcomes of WWINN’s new line of policy to systematically review international trade fairs in terms of participation by WWINN or one of its subsidiaries. As a leading trade
fair for automation and mechatronics, Automatica was deemed highly relevant for WWINN. Its expertise in highspeed and micro-assembly will be profiled at the fair, and the stand will feature the ProFast4G next generation assembly platform.
